Tokyo Vacations

The gleaming skyscrapers, metro trains speeding throughout the city, and flashy neon lights may have you thinking you've been transported into the future. But Tokyo, Japan, maintains old traditions, which can be seen in nearly every aspect of life here, and a trip to Tokyo leads to new experiences and a feast for your senses. Whether you're watching a Sumo match or exploring the bustling Tsukiji Fish Market, you'll be absolutely engrossed in the scene. So, look for Tokyo vacation deals today, because life's too short not to experience this dynamic metropolis.

Top Hotels in Tokyo

With so much to take in and so many neighborhoods to explore, the location of your hotel is key to a fabulous Tokyo vacation. Consider these guest favorites as you plan the great escape:

  • The Prince Park Tower Tokyo : The floor-to-ceiling windows of this hotel provide quite the vantage point. Look out over Shiba Park and get up close and personal with Tokyo Tower, all from the comfort of sleek, contemporary furnishings. You’ll have plenty to do in the Minata Ward, but when you do stay in, soak in the hot springs and dine in one of the seven in-house restaurants.
  • Hilton Tokyo : In the bustling business district of Nishishinjuku on the south side of Shinjuku, the elegant white exterior of Hilton Tokyo is a beacon of luxury near cultural venues including Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall and Meiji Jingu Shrine. If you come back late from a life-changing opera, ring up 24-hour room service or stop in for a night cap at one of the two hotel lounges.
  • Shinjuku Prince Hotel : In Shinjuku’s late-night entertainment district, Kabukicho, brightly lit billboards keep company with quiet gardens, and the Shinjuku Prince Hotel stands in the midst of this colorful combination. Walk to the famed night market Omoide Yokocho and Seiji Togo Memorial Sompo Japan Museum of Art, or venture farther afield to Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.
  • Park Hotel Tokyo : Within walking distance to Nittere Plaza and Hamarikyu Garden, the Park Hotel Tokyo is not your typical waterfront hideaway. In fact, it’s right in the middle of busy Minato, but the whimsical contemporary décor and comfy furnishings will have you convinced you’re in another world. And if the unique designs don’t do the trick, the full-service spa will.

Major Attractions

The Greater Tokyo Area may be the most populous metropolitan center in the world, but you can still find places to wander through natural wonders and savor serenity—in fact, among locals, Tokyo is known as the City of Woods. Spend a quiet morning or afternoon smelling the roses and relaxing beneath shade trees at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, or stop to admire the architecture and immerse yourself in tradition at the Meiji Shrine, which stands in homage to the 19th century emperor.

To continue a whirlwind tour of Tokyo’s past and present, visit the Imperial Palace, the Tokyo National Museum, and Senso-ji, an ancient Buddhist temple. For delicious Japanese cuisine and drinks, head to the trendy Ebisu neighborhood and sample the sake. To tip the scales of a romantic vacation in Tokyo all the way to “Ooh, la la,” ride to the Tembo Deck of Tokyo Skytree to dine on gourmet delights with one of the best views in the city—and we don’t just mean the smile on your special someone’s face.

Festivals and Events

No matter when you can get away on your vacation in Tokyo, there’s likely a festival that will sweep you off your feet and into the joyous city streets. Tokyo kicks off the new year by spending time with loved ones and lots of delicious food. In May celebrate Tokugawa Ieyasu's win at the battle of Sekigahara at the Kanda Matsuri Festival, one of the three major Shinto festivals. Colorful parades fill the streets of Tokyo with dancing and glistening floats called mikoshi, which are believed to transport deities from shrine to shrine. On the last weekend of July, fireworks light up the sky over Sumida River and Tokyo Bay during Hanabi Taikai—settle in to watch the show from Sumida Koen Park or along the river.

When the bright lights and glorious gardens of Tokyo woo you to their busy harbor, book a Tokyo vacation package with Travelocity and save as you embark on a grand adventure.

When should you book a vacation package to Japan?

Japan experiences an annual average temperature of 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The hottest month is August, which has a high of 79 degrees Fahrenheit. The shoulder seasons of March to May and September to November are the most ideal, when tourism is between peak and off-peak. Explore tokyo.

At the foot of the majestic Mt. Fuji in Hakone is the site of Japan's most famous hot springs resort.

A symbol of Japan's post-war rebirth, Tokyo Tower is the world's tallest, self-supported steel tower.

Cherry blossoms bloom each spring around Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest and most significant temple

  • Mt. Fuji & Hakone Slide 1 of 3: At the foot of the majestic Mt. Fuji in Hakone is the site of Japan's most famous hot springs resort.
  • Tokyo Tower Slide 2 of 3: A symbol of Japan's post-war rebirth, Tokyo Tower is the world's tallest, self-supported steel tower.
  • Senso-ji Temple Slide 3 of 3: Cherry blossoms bloom each spring around Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest and most significant temple

Sacred sites and social graces are very common in Tokyo. Enjoy a quiet and meditative walk through a Shinto shrine, Buddhist temple or The Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden — where more than 1,500 cherry trees bloom every spring. Tokyo may be bustling and crowded, but its citizens are very polite and considerate. From waiting in straight lines in jam-packed subways to removing shoes in temples, museums and restaurants, manners are at the center of life in Tokyo. To discover more about Tokyo, consider adding a walking tour to your package.

Because Tokyo is a trendsetter in fashion, it is a shopper’s paradise. A wide variety of shopping districts offer tours of designer stores, adorable boutiques, wacky  cosplay  (costume-play) shops and 100 Yen Shops (dollar stores) — where you can find quality-made items at a bargain. From  sensu  (folding fans) to  furoshiki  (wrapping cloths) and colorful kimono gowns to  tenugui  (hand towels), traditional Japanese clothing and accessories make the perfect gift. Classic patterns and exquisite workmanship deliver made-in-Japan charm. Set aside some time to shop the Hakuhinkan Toy Park, where every kind of gadget known to man will amaze you.

With 400 years in the making, Tokyo’s local cuisine has a universal appeal, and offers a treasure trove of tasty delights. If you're an early riser, a must-see is the Tsukiji Fish Market. Here, you'll find some of the freshest sushi on the planet. The city’s 23 zones all serve up mouth-watering local specialties, including  soba  (buckwheat noodles),  tsukudani  (sardines) and  miso  (soy). Venture off a main street and discover a totally different world — from ramen zones and antenna shops (specialty food shops) to  yokocho  alleys (rows of tiny, unique eateries). For sweet treats, a must-try spot is the Ginza district, which is famous for its high-end chocolates.

Delta Vacations vacation packages include round-trip airfare aboard a Delta Partner Airline to Narita International Airport (NRT) or New Kansai Airport Japan (KIX). Round-trip private and shared transfers are available for purchase between the two Tokyo airports and your hotel.

The Big Red Lantern Of Sensoji Asakusa Temple In Tokyo, Japan

Japanese Yen

Good morning

Ohayōgozaimasu

Good evening

"Tokyo is like nowhere else on earth, and I love revealing the city's incredible diversity to our guests. Whether you want to explore ancient temples or check out the shopping mecca of Shibuya, there's something for everyone in Tokyo."

Travel Director

Wander through Ameyoko Street Market

We’ll lead the way through this buzzing street market, with almost 200 shops selling everything from clothing and trinkets to fresh fish, spices and sweets. Located along the Yamanote Line tracks, you’ll mingle with the locals seeking out the best bargains, and learn how the market originated as a black market selling candy after WWII.

Explore the center of Asakusa to the Sensoji Buddhist Temple

You’ll feel like you’ve traveled back to the Tokyo of old in the Asakusa as you wander past traditional craft shops and food stalls, before arriving at the staggeringly ancient Sensoji temple. Originally built in 628, and rebuilt countless times since, this is the oldest temple site in Tokyo, and we’ll wander through the beautiful crimson pagoda, woven with incense.

Learn the mesmerizing rhythmic art of Taiko drumming

You’ll dive into the traditional culture of Japan when you join a Local Specialist to discover the soul-stirring art of Taiko drumming. You’ll be amazed at how Taiko performers pound on the large drums in special choreographed movements to form a connection with the musical energy, and you can even have a go at playing the Taiko drums yourself.

Admire the Imperial Palace of Tokyo

Home of the Emperor of Japan, the Imperial Palace is one of the best places to visit in Tokyo. The magnificent palace is spread across three kilometers (almost two miles) of stunning grounds, and we’ll take you on a tour to see the two ornate bridges that form the entrance, and explore the lush Imperial Palace East Gardens, an oasis of lakes and blossom trees.

Pass through the vermilion-lacquered Kaminarimon Gate

You'll love walking through the picturesque Kaminarimon Gate, or the ‘Thunder Gate’ on your Tokyo tour. This Buddhist archway is famed for its huge paper lantern painted in red-and-black to represent thunder and lightning, and the gate leads to the famous Nakamise shopping street where you can soak up the charming old Tokyo atmosphere.

Our top 5 things to do in Tokyo

Our Tokyo tours take you to all the most iconic Tokyo attractions, from the spectacular Imperial Palace to the Sensoji Buddhist Temple with over a thousand years of history.

Edo-Tokyo Museum

This museum may be housed in a futuristic building, but the exhibits tell the fascinating story of Tokyo, or Edo as it was known until 1869. You’ll explore the cultural heritage, political climate and architecture of the Edo Period, with amazing models of towns and life-sized figures that give an insight into what life was like in the ancient Edo Period.

Samurai Museum

Get a blast from Tokyo’s medieval past when you visit the incredible Samurai Museum, with more than 70 exhibits on the history of combat in Japan up until the 16th century. You’ll feel completely immersed in the world of the samurai as you don a kabuto helmet, wear samurai costumes and even see combat reenactments with talented actors.

Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum

Set in the beautiful surrounds of Ueno Park, this fantastic art museum is the perfect place to discover traditional Japanese art forms and the works of famous Japanese artists, from calligraphy and ceramics to sculpture and woodblock prints. The museum also regularly features exhibits of iconic international artists like Van Gogh, El Greco and Da Vinci.

Best museums in Tokyo

You can’t visit this fascinating city without stopping by a few museums, and our Tokyo trips will point you in the direction of the very best institutions.

Edomae sushi

Japanese sushi is one of the most beloved foods around the world, but it's Edomae sushi that has really stood the test of time. First created during the Edo period, this special sushi traditionally only uses fish that has been marinated for a few days and your Tokyo guide will show you where to find the most authentic Edomae sushi in the city.

Unaju (Freshwater Eel over Rice)

This traditional Japanese dish is made with freshwater eel that is prepared in a kabayaki style, where the eel fillets are grilled and basted in a sweet and salty sauce and dusted with powdered sansho (Japanese pepper). Usually served with steamed rice to balance the rich unaju flavor, you have to give this classic dish a try in Tokyo.

These adorable Japanese sweets are a beloved treat in Tokyo, and come in an endless array of varieties, shapes and colors. Whether they’re made with sweet azuki bean paste (anko), rice cakes (mochi), Japanese agar (kanten), rice, flour or sesame paste, you should always enjoy your wagashi with a hot cup of Japanese green tea.

Best food in Tokyo

Tokyo food is on a whole new level and our Tokyo vacations will introduce you to all the unique flavors and dishes from sushi and seafood to sweet cakes.

Options & Fees

So that we can offer you the best deals, our packages are, like most hotels and cruises, priced based on double occupancy rooms or cabins. We charge solo travelers an extra fee to cover the extra costs of single occupancy rooms or cabins. (Consider: if you booked a $200/night hotel room solo, you would pay the $200 yourself; but if a couple booked the same room, each one would pay only $100.) But you only pay extra for the rooms or cabins, nothing else, including meals, sightseeing, tips, etc. Why are single rooms more?

Visit Tokyo: Get started

In addition to its rich culture and unique architecture, Tokyo has its fair share of attractions. Start off with a visit to the Imperial Palace and learn about Japan’s Imperial Family, which is still active today. From there, see the Meiji shrine dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken—surrounded by a breathtakingly large forest—or find yourself in the epicentre of all things anime, gaming and manga-related in Akihabara Electric Town.

TOKYO TRAVEL GUIDE

Tokyo.

What to eat

Your Tokyo trip can’t go without a taste test! Indulge in spontaneous sushi and sashimi sessions with a side of udon noodles, take up the crispy crunch of golden tempura or enjoy the smoky flavours of yakitori brochettes cooked over a grill.

What to bring back

Take souvenirs to go when you visit Tokyo! A few keepsake recommendations include handmade pottery, daruma dolls, kimono and yukata-styled clothing or a ceramic maneki-neko (lucky cat), most of which you'll find in shopping hubs like Odaiba.

Tech and gaming fans may find some great bargains in Akihabara. Fashion enthusiasts should look towards the Harajuku and Omotesando districts for the trendiest shops. Food fanatics, however, will find what they’re looking for in Ginza.

When to visit Tokyo

We recommend going during the off-season, from December to February or from June to August, when there are fewer crowds. The peak season is when the cherry blossoms bloom from March to May.

While the Shibuya Crossing allows as many as 3,000 people to cross whenever the traffic signals change, it only indicates the vastness of Tokyo’s occupancy. As it turns out, it is currently the most populated metropolis in the world, housing over 37 million residents—that’s over 6,000 people per square kilometre!

The same can be said of Shinjuku Station. Dubbed the world’s busiest railway station, it hosts over 3.5 million passengers per day!

10 of the best hotels in Tokyo, from charming ryokans to Japanese onsen retreats

Japan’s capital is one of the most diverse and thrilling cities on Earth — but its sheer size can make choosing a hotel daunting. Here are 10 places to stay in Tokyo to make your trip all the more memorable.

With its glinting skyscrapers, narrow alleyways, lantern-festooned temples and neon-clad arcades, Tokyo is one of the most diverse and thrilling cities on Earth — but its sheer size can make choosing a hotel daunting. Over the past decade, accommodation options have broadened to include trendy ryokans (traditional inns) and indie hotels. Because there’s no single city ‘centre’ in the Japanese capital, you’ll almost certainly have to do some travelling — likely on the efficient metro system — to see its highlights, so don’t get overly hung up on location. Instead, think about what’s more important after a day’s sightseeing: an al fresco pool or a cool in-house bar.

1. Hoshinoya Tokyo

Best for: cultural immersion Leave the city, and your shoes, behind as you step onto the tatami floors of this skyscraper ryokan. It’s a low-lit retreat of shoji screen doors and incense-scented air, with a second-floor lobby that includes a little salon for tea ceremonies. The 84 rooms are spread across the next 14 floors, with each level centred around a traditional ochanoma lounge serving teas, sake and house-made snacks. The rooms themselves are plush, with raised-platform futon beds, deep-soak tubs and jersey kimono-style pyjamas. An immense 17th-floor onsen-spa has hot spring waters pumped in from 5,000ft below the city streets, with a vaulted roof that leaves it part-open to the elements. The 10-table basement restaurant serves exquisite French-Japanese tasting menus and the in-room bento box breakfasts are highly recommended. Rooms: From ¥112,000 (£589), two-night minimum stay.

2. OMO5 Tokyo Otsuka

Best for: budgeting In a skyscraper-cluttered metropolis, a hotel with an intimate, neighbourhood vibe can be a rare thing. Yet this branch of cool, affordable chain Omo, by Hoshino Resorts, has just that, packaged up in a modern building in the northern district of Otsuka. Cleverly designed rooms make the most of every square inch, with loft-style beds suspended above tatami mat seating areas and storage space integrated into walls and stairs. There’s also a laundry room on the fifth floor, where guests can wash and dry clothes for just a few quid, and an all-day cafe that transitions from breakfast space to coffeeshop to bar as the day progresses. Sign up for a local tour with one of the dedicated ‘Omo Rangers’, who will take you around the excellent local tempura and ramen shops — or even on an Otsuka bar crawl. Rooms: From ¥16,000 (£84).

3. TRUNK (Hotel) Cat Street

Best for: loft-style cool This felt like an entirely new concept in Tokyo when it first opened in 2017: a design-forward boutique hotel with universally appealing NYC-style coolness. Seven years on, the concept has now been copied many times in the city, but it’s still hard to top the original in the shopping area of Shibuya, just off Cat Street. Its lounge, restaurants and shop attract fashionable Tokyoites as much as hotel guests, and its bedrooms come with a breezy, minimalist aesthetic. Some have balconies with hammocks while larger options, like the Dining Suite, include spaces such as a kitchen area or terrace. Don’t be surprised to see dapper couples heading for the rooftop; it’s a popular venue for city weddings. Rooms: From ¥51,774 (£273).

4. Palace Hotel Tokyo

Best for: royal luxury This elegant hotel in Otemachi has long been a favourite with well-heeled Tokyoites who come for the dining options and spa. It helps that it’s mere steps away from the Imperial Palace, the city’s most exclusive address, and close to the swish shops of the upmarket Ginza district. Good-sized rooms — some of them featuring balconies — overlook an expanse of moat-carved gardens. An extensive breakfast buffet has princely appeal thanks to elegant platings of grilled fish, pickled plums, rice and miso soup; if that’s not to your taste, there’s eggs benedict and croissants, too. The in-house restaurants also have the wow factor, with two Michelin-starred options: French-inspired Esterre, in partnership with Ducasse Paris, and Chinese-focused Amber Palace. Rooms: From ¥91,800 (£483).

5. ONE@Tokyo

Best for: solo travellers In the east of the city, a 10-minute walk from the Tokyo Skytree observatory tower, One@Tokyo has a high-profile pedigree for a budget hotel, having been designed by Japanese starchitect Kengo Kuma. Functional yet not austere, its communal spaces — from the open lobby to the greenery-dotted rooftop — fuse industrial metallics with warm woods and a palette of unfussy greys. With their friendly price point and compact footprint, the lead-in standard semi-double rooms are perfect for solo travellers who want a step up in comfort and privacy from one of the city’s legendary capsule hotels. Long-stay discounts apply when booking for five nights, making it a perfect base if you’re planning day trips out of the city, too. Rooms: From ¥15,000 (£79).

6. Hotel New Otani Tokyo

Best for: amenities More urban resort than hotel, this vast property — once a filming location for the James Bond film You Only Live Twice — occupies a verdant location between multiple parks in the central Chiyoda ward. The hotel is fringed by 10 acres of 400-year-old Japanese gardens and, unusually for Tokyo, also has an al fresco swimming pool. The 1,474 rooms are spread across three wings, and there are more than three-dozen dining options, plus a lounge with free nibbles and drinks for Executive House Zen guests. Rooms: From ¥36,000 (£189).

7. Shiba Park Hotel

Best for: bookworms The printed page takes centre stage from the moment you walk in to this hotel, which houses a collection of around 1,500 books. As well as a double-height atrium lined with wooden shelves of books, there’s also a fireside library lounge and book corners on every floor, each themed around different aspects of Japanese culture. The rooms are comfy, contemporary retreats in which to curl up in with a good read — and the views of Tokyo Tower, lit up like a beacon at night, aren’t half bad either. Rooms: From ¥21,870 (£115).

8. Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo

Best for: families With reasonable prices, a prime location near Shinjuku station and views out to Mount Fuji on a clear day, this option ticks a lot of boxes. Rooms are a bit bland (unless you plump for a suite with tatami mats and shoji screen doors), but for families, the spacious four-bed options more than make up for the uninspiring decor. On-site experiences such as tea ceremonies make getting a culture fix easy if you’re wrangling kids. The seventh-floor outdoor pool, 11 restaurants and laundromat also help. Rooms: From ¥35,200 (£185).

9. Hotel Groove Shinjuku, A Parkroyal Hotel

Best for: nightlife-lovers For years, Shinjuku’s red-light district Kabukicho was rather sordid, the kind of place you’d head to for late-night karaoke and beers but not for a respectable hotel. All that’s changed with this recent opening, which reflects the fun of the city’s party heart but also has style and class. Set across floors 18 to 38 in the new Tokyu Kabukicho Tower, the rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the neon bustle below, as well as electric-hued carpets and the occasional pop art wall mural. On the building’s lower floors, a retro-styled arcade, cinema, live music space and food hall with regional dishes keep the entertainment flowing around the clock. Rooms: From ¥31,000 (£163).

10. Tokyo Station Hotel

Best for: European-style elegance Opened in 1915, and set within the original 20th-century Tokyo Station, this grand hotel could have been lifted from London or Paris. Red bricks and soaring domes characterise the exterior; chandeliers, marble and button-back headboards are part of the old-world European opulence inside. Take tea in the high-ceilinged lobby lounge, ringing with live piano music and the clink of fine silverware, and end the day at the venerable Bar Oak, which serves up an array of Japanese whiskies in moody, wood-lined environs. If you’re planning to adventure beyond the capital, the location is unbeatable. Tokyo Station is the main Shinkansen (bullet train) terminal, serving popular destinations such as Kyoto and Osaka, and you can go from bed to boarding in mere minutes. Rooms: From ¥135,332 (£711).

Japan's cherry blossom season came a little later than expected this year

School's out: How climate change and record breaking heat threatens education in Asia

Japan’s Sakura Matsuri festival started as a simple celebration of spring time, but has since evolved and developed to become a major pillar of the country’s tourism industry.

In just 30 days – from mid-March to mid-April – the number of inbound tourists in Japan can easily surpass three million. It is not hard to imagine how much this influx of tourists will stimulate consumption in various economic sectors. Even the very commonplace matcha ice cream, seasonal desserts and pharmaceutical gifts, along with the sandos and bentos sold in Japan’s ubiquitous convenience stores, are snatched up each day.

Business owners are definitely making good money during this peak travel season.

That said, though, many of the millions of sakura chasers who thronged the country from all around the world (including yours truly), have some complaints about the late arrival of the cherry blossom season this year.

Taking Japan’s early bloom and full bloom (which was on March 18) dates last year as an indicator, I timed my trip to Tokyo between March 20 and 31 this year, in order to catch the best blooms from Tokyo, and all the way south to Kyoto, Osaka and Nara.

Unfortunately, as of the morning of April 4, which was the date I flew back to Kuala Lumpur from Osaka’s Kansai Airport, there were still only flower buds on the cherry trees all around the city. The flowers actually only started blooming about 14 to 18 days later than this year’s anticipated dates!

And that’s not all. The cherry trees in the Old City of Kyoto, known for its more than 1,000 temples and shrines, were only 50% blooming, while most of the trees inside the Kiyomizu-dera and Byodo-in temples did not even show signs of flowering when I was there.

The columnist’s travel buddy William (right) has encountered cherry blossoms countless times, and enjoys all his experiences.

Even the trees in Nara’s most iconic cherry blossom spot, Yoshinoyama, were only sporadically flowering, much to the frustration of international travellers.

The millions of tourists flocking into Japan specifically to see the flowers were invariably disappointed, much to the chagrin of the Japanese tourism authorities.

But, as I have always said, no one can change the laws of Nature. Although, from what I understand, there have been many unexpected things happening to our planet these past two years, and Japan is not exempt from this.

The Earth’s energy is being constantly renewed. It is said that Earth will officially enter the “Fire Forbidden Cycle” between 2024 and 2043, when a new “mega-trend” will descend and stay for two whole decades.

Anyway, we are now increasingly feeling the reality that the transitional period between the old and new energies will have a strong bearing on everyone’s destiny. Being part of this process, we will have to understand such a transformation, especially the changes taking place in our natural ecosystem as a consequence of climate change. That explains why the rhythm of the cherry flower buds has been disrupted by the sudden and unpredictable changes in the environment.

Notably, the unusually frequent natural disasters striking Japan at the start of the year have triggered climatic anomalies. The temperature was still a chilly 7°C in Tokyo and Osaka as late as mid-March, with two to three days of rain – a weather pattern that does not augur well for the cherry blossoms.

Back to our topic, many travellers planned their cherry viewing trips over a year ago in hopes of witnessing the full bloom of what they call the “warrior’s flowers”, and seizing the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the true meaning of life.

Chinese author Jin Yong once said that the gist of life is to make a “hoo-ha” before bowing out quietly. Travellers are eager to have a great time at the right moment just to leave behind happy memories that will hopefully last a lifetime.

With 22 travel buddies following me, we landed at Kansai Airport on March 24, and then proceeded to board the coach across the Seto bridge into Tokushima, Kyushu, followed by a cruise to Shodo Island, Okayama, Arima, Nara, Mie and Kyoto. We felt a little nervous seeing only sporadic cherry blossoms along our way. But since we were already in Japan, there was not much we could do about the late cherry blossoms, so we decided to take things easy and enjoyed the wonderful weather.

Also, whenever we did spot the sakura, we took the time to learn more about the many varieties of cherry trees and flower buds. Our moods experienced a dramatic shift each time, as if we were instantly transported back to our younger self, going to picnics and learning new things.

To be honest, I had never expected that sakura hunting could be this much fun!

Another one of the columnist’s travel buddies, wearing a Japanese yukata in Kyoto, posing for pictures among light pink cherry blossoms.

As if taking over my job, my travel buddies tried to comfort me, saying: “There’re not too many flowers to see at this moment, but don’t worry, in Japan there are plenty of forests, farmlands, rivers and clean air, and experiences that money cannot buy. Take an onsen bath to relieve fatigue, and savour a sumptuous dinner when night falls. This is what life is supposed to be!”

Indeed, Japan’s tourism resources have always been an exquisite blend of humanistic culture and a wonderful natural environment, and you can always enjoy them in any way you wish.

Moreover, from spring through summer, a great variety of local culinary delights will pop up at supermarkets and shops everywhere, so it is definitely a good time to be in Japan. These tasty treats include mochi with azuki bean filling from various rural communities that has since become one of my most favourite snacks, especially when paired with a cup of hot matcha.

Unpredictable things may happen throughout any journey, and it is up to the individual to control the outcome – if you want to turn it into a pleasant experience then you need to be more positive about things.

By the way, while we cannot force every traveller to abide by local customs or travel “dos and don’ts”, there might be some nice surprises waiting for us if we are willing to adopt a more open attitude and accept these “rules”.

With the cherry blossoms now at the very end of their blooming period, another year has come and gone. It is my wish that by now you have discovered in your journey the lubricant that cheers up your life!
