The Mediterranean has a timeless appeal, with its winning combination of historical treasures, charming port towns, balmy summer weather and fantastic food and drink. Here are 12 of the best small ship cruises to the Mediterranean.

It's an incredibly diverse region, and here in the UK we're lucky enough to have the Med right on our doorstep, so it's no surprise that it remains the most popular destination for British cruisers year after year. Every major cruise line sends its ships to the Mediterranean during our summer months, though the experience on offer can vary dramatically.

There are certain ports that appear on every cruise line's Mediterranean itineraries, and rightly so: the likes of Venice, Barcelona and Dubrovnik are popular for a reason. But a small ship cruise opens up a whole different side to the Mediterranean, allowing you to visit the smaller ports and secluded bays that a bigger ship just can't reach.

At Mundy Cruising we specialise in ships that carry guests in the hundreds, rather than the thousands, which makes for a very different atmosphere on board: more intimate, more spacious, with a level of personalised service that has more in common with a boutique hotel than a mainstream cruise ship carrying 5,000 passengers. Even within the small ship category you have a fantastic breadth of choice in the Mediterranean, from resort-style ships offering dining choices and entertainment venues aplenty, to tiny 100-guest vessels that are more like travelling on your own private yacht.

Peak season in the Med naturally coincides with the hottest summer months, though we prefer to visit in May or September, when the crowds are thinner and temperatures are more comfortable. Certain itineraries, such as those visiting the Greek Islands, tend to get booked up early, so it pays to plan ahead. Having said that, there are often bargains to be had in the Med if you're not too fussed about where you go, particularly earlier or later in the season.

To assist you in choosing the right ship, here is our guide to the best small ship cruise lines visiting the Mediterranean.

1. Windstar Cruises

Windstar's fleet of six small ships - three with sails, three without - are a lovely size, ranging from the 148-guest Wind Star to the 342-guest Wind Surf . The atmosphere on board is laid-back and friendly, with no dressing up for dinner, and entertainment is low key.

Windstar have a great selection of Mediterranean itineraries focusing on specific areas, including the Greek islands, the Amalfi Coast and Croatia. Fares offer great value, though they are not fully inclusive - drinks and gratuities are extra.

2. Silversea

Silversea are a natural choice for a Mediterranean small ship cruise, with their Italian roots and their 'classic' fleet ranging in size from the 274-guest Silver Wind to the new 728-guest Silver Nova and Silver Ray. Silversea pioneered the luxury all-inclusive concept, with all your meals, alcoholic drinks and even butler service included in the fare, and Silversea's extensive Mediterranean programme includes lots of tiny ports that other lines rarely visit.

3. Seabourn

Seabourn are a great option if you're looking for a longer voyage, offering a great choice of extended itineraries that showcase the amazing diversity of the Mediterranean. Their ships are spacious and contemporary, and you can choose between the 458-guest 'triplets' - Odyssey, Quest and Sojourn - or the newer, and slightly larger, Encore and Ovation , both carrying a maximum of 604 guests. Fares are all-inclusive, and there are often great savings to be had if you're flexible on your dates and itinerary.

4. Crystal Cruises

Crystal's newly-enhanced sister ships Symphony and Serenity are at the larger end of what we would consider small, carrying 606 guests and 740 guests respectively since their refurbishment, but this means that you'll enjoy a greater choice of dining and entertainment venues on board, including the fantastic Nobu , as well as a packed programme of daily activities.

Their Mediterranean itineraries are perhaps less adventurous than some, but Crystal's onboard hospitality is unparalleled, and these ships are perfect if you're looking for more of a resort style on board.

5. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent are one of the most inclusive of all the all-inclusive lines; as well as your meals, drinks, gratuities and taxes, even laundry, your fare also includes your flights, overseas transfers and a selection of shore excursions in every port.

These included excursions are a particular boon if you're visiting archaeological sites, museums or galleries where you need a guide to really understand what you're seeing, and they're great if you're visiting a port where the points of interest are some distance away, such as Livorno (for Florence and Pisa). Regent also offer excursions themed around food and drink, wellness and off-the-beaten track 'Go Local' experiences. Ships range in size from 490 to 750 guests, and the accommodation is particularly spacious.

6. SeaDream Yacht Club

The SeaDream experience is everything we love about small ship cruising, with a laid-back, al fresco style on board and some fantastic Mediterranean itineraries visiting charming little ports, exclusive yacht harbours, sleepy islands and idyllic beaches.

Their twin yachts each accommodate just 112 lucky guests, with all meals, drinks and gratuities included in the fare. There is also a watersports marina at the back of the ship, with toys including kayaks, paddle boards, jetskis and Laser sailboats.

French cruise line Ponant have recently undergone significant expansion, with the recent addition of six 184-guest 'Explorer class' yachts. This is in addition to their existing fleet of four 264-guest ships and the petite 64-guest sailing ship Le Ponant, so you have a huge choice of itineraries. On board you can expect chic, contemporary design and the best of French hospitality, plus a marina at the back of the ship for watersports and zodiac excursions.

As you might expect, Ponant's Mediterranean programme includes some appealing voyages to Corsica and the south of France, along with cruises focusing on Croatia, the Greek islands and Italy.

8. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

Hapag-Lloyd cater principally to the German-speaking market, but their stunning 500-guest MS Europa 2 operates bilingual cruises in German and English, and has been consistently rated the best cruise ship in the world by the Berlitz Guide. The ship's Nordic-inspired interiors are flooded with natural light, there are seven different restaurants to choose from and there is a real emphasis on wellness, with a huge spa.

Fares can be high, and do not include alcoholic drinks or gratuities, but a shipboard credit helps to offset your bill. Options in the Mediterranean include cruises that start or end in Mallorca, an unusual routing that allows you to tack some beach time onto your cruise, and Hapag also have some lovely voyages down to the Canary Islands.

9. Oceania Cruises

Oceania's port-intensive Mediterranean itineraries are perfect for those who really like to make the most of their time ashore and spend plenty of time exploring, with lots of overnight calls and late evening departures. The style on board is relaxed and unfussy, and Oceania are particularly noted for the quality of their food.

The smaller 'R-class' ships, carrying 684 guests, are a lovely size, while the larger 'O-class' and newest 'Allura class' ships can accommodate 1,250 and 1200 guests respectively, ideal those looking for more facilities on board. Standard fares do not include alcoholic drinks or gratuities, but these are often included in their regular promotions.

Scenic's discovery yachts, Scenic Eclipse I and Scenic Eclipse II, cater to just 228 guests and usually operate expedition voyages in some of the most remote locations on the planet, but these super sleek vessels are just as at home in the warm waters of the Mediterranean, when they visit briefly early or late in the season, as they are in the freezing polar oceans.

Offering an outstanding level of luxury with all-balcony accommodation and a vast choice of dining venues for such a small ship their all-inclusive pricing also includes shore excursions. Although if you want to try out one of the ships' twin helicopters a supplement will apply!

11. Emerald Cruises

Having followed a similar path as sister brand Scenic, Emerald have expanded from their popular river cruise and touring programme and introduced a small ship cruise experience. Their 100-guest yachts, Emerald Azzurra and Sakara , look fantastic and offer a laidback and informal atmosphere on board.

A single main restaurant (plus pool café) and smaller step out style balconies for the majority of balcony grade stateroom differentiate it from the Scenic ships as this is targeted at the premium market. Fares are not fully inclusive, with drinks outside of mealtimes being extra, but your flights, transfers, meals, wine and beer with meals, WiFi, gratuities and even excursions in key ports are included. An excess of Mediterranean itineraries offer focused country and region-specific sailing as well as voyages that enjoy a collection of the area's best highlights.

12. Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

For a voyage akin to being on board your own private yacht, Ritz Carlton offers stylish luxury on board their first yacht Evrima , which launched in 2022 and marked the hotel giant's first foray into cruising. Their second yacht, Ilma , launches this year and will be slightly larger than Evrima but with the same intimate resort style, perfect for sailing the laid-back rivieras of the Mediterranean in style.

AdventureSmith is a very professional organization that is a pleasure to work with. This was our third, but certainly not last trip with AdventureSmith.

Accommodations, ship and staff were all excellent. Met several great people/couples, all were enjoyable. The Smithsonian lectures and tour guides were very good.

We enjoyed everything from the accommodations, tours, food and like-minded guests. We definitely have great memories and would recommend this trip to other friends and family.

All was great - from pre planning to the actual travel.

The staff was wonderful! The children love them.

Both the Sea Cloud and the land explorations were superb. We found Corsica to be particularly fascinating.

The trip included 5 days in Athens, Greece and a week aboard the Sea Cloud through Lindblad. We found Lindblad a little rigid to work with during the planning stages.  In Greece, they were outstanding. The Sea Cloud is a gorgeous sailing barque. The crew, both Lindblad and Sea Cloud, were warm, gracious and a delight to sail with. My wife had always wanted to visit Greece. I love sailing. The combination got us.

I think Santorini was a top destination. It's a beautiful island that I would stay on. The smaller islands were interesting as well.

Accommodations Review

Room was, as expected, tight quarters. It's an old ship, after all. The public areas are great. The upper deck is a beautiful place for cocktails, or just relaxing. Seeing the Sea Cloud under sail is a real treat.

Meals Review

Food was excellent. I think I probably gained weight, but that's my fault. I preferred the buffet dinners to the served ones. Variety was excellent. Lot's of great salads. Good seafood and fresh fish.

Crew & Guides Review

All of the people leading the expedition are true professionals. They know their stuff. One of the regular speakers has her PHD in archeology and is a real expert on the region and Greek history.  I was really impressed with all of them. The two regular guides are Greek and have many years experience in the areas we visited. One of our Lindblad guides, a native Greek, was much too insistent on trying to tell us all about the Greek Orthodox religion. As a non-Christian, I found it a little off-putting. She knew her stuff, but seemed anxious to proselytize...

First, the "dinners" would not stop me from recommending the cruise. For a French cruise line I had very high expectations, maybe too high. Other passengers had similar comments. Overall good, 5 star vessel, 3 star dinners. Other meals very good.

Overall good. Some details on shore excursion's were lacking. More free time at each would be have been nice.

Itinerary Review

All [places were] enjoyable in there different ways. The hiking excursion although very interesting was poorly planned, more difficult (for the old passengers) and much longer than we were told.

The vessel was well appointed and had everything we needed for our week long stay. The staff was great as well and worked so hard to make sure everyone was happy and attended to.

I especially liked the local cuisine that they provided, with the wonderful Greek Salads and other selections. The only improvement on breakfast would be to provide brewed coffee as what was provided was instant coffee in tea-like bags That would probably be the only improvement.

Dittmar, the manager on board/tour director who did everything to provide us with information, changing tours to meet the changing weather conditions and providing information in a very professional, upbeat and pleasant way. He really kept everything going smoothly on board. He was very organized, provided excellent information on each island and really was great in every way. We also met one of the owners of the Variety ships, Christian, who introduced himself upon our arrival to the boat. That was a surprise!

I really liked ALL the locations we visited but enjoyed most Monemvassia and Santorini. We had a fantastic trip. Although we experienced some cooler/windier weather than is normal for this time of year, everything worked out really well. The ship staff was awesome and was professional, personable and thorough. Due to rough waters they had to turn the itinerary around and make all new tour reservations and many other last minute arrangements, adding a few different locations than expected. They did all this very well.

Transportation Review

All transportation arrangements went very smoothly and we were either provided the transportation or given the information (hotel in Athens) we needed to make our own. The hotel suggested was beautiful and first rate, with amazing views of the Acropolis from the rooftop restaurant.

Fellow Passengers Review

We can't say enough good things about all the passengers on board (that we met). There was a group of 30 Road Scholar passengers that we did not interact with too much, but all the other passengers were so pleasant, likeable and very well traveled. We got to know many very well and joined them for meals and tours and restaurants off the boat as well.

Andrew Browning, whom we have used several times to book trips, did his usual great job answering questions and provided timely information and everything we needed ahead of the trip. We have been on a number of trips with family over the years with AdventureSmith and we look forward to many more. Each trip is so memorable and provides great bonding time. I always recommend people to go to your website when looking for a trip.

Traveler Advice

Go to Greece, as we did, during the shoulder months like May and September when the hoards of people are not there. We never had to fight the crowds as you do in the summer months. With climate change, be prepared for unexpected weather and be flexible with tours being changed due to inclimate weather. If  travelers are looking for culture, history and beautiful scenery, this is a great place to go!

Athens hotel was a great location, nice rooms and pool. Older but great for our needs. Ship room was good sized and nice, common decks and dining areas were good. Dated but ideal for our needs.

Breakfast on the ship offered a lot of choices but was pretty much the same each morning.

Athens Delphi tour was great - bus ride took about 2+ hours each way. Syros, Flegandros and Paros were my favorite islands with each having good sites to visit and not too big with good food/shops. Mykonos and Santorini islands where good but very busy and my least favorite.

Airport transportation was on time, nice vehicles and driver.

Perfect group with similar age adult/children. Everyone was active.

The tour guides at Delphi and Parthenon were very good and knowledgeable. Athens guide were great.

Great planning.

• Jewels of the Cyclades

The Galileo was very clean and functional. The staff was wonderful! The children love them. The chef was able to accomodate dietary restrictions easily. The food was wonderful! We liked the swim stops. We enjoyed the tours of the islands. Least enjoyed: It rained and the long trip back to Athens on the rough sea was LONG. We were grateful that the weather was beautiful for the rest of the trip.

Sea Cloud continues to be a classic! Well maintained and very well run.

Even better than ever! John is thoughtful, attentive to the group's needs as well as to the individuals in the group.

The Best Mediterranean Small Ship Cruises

From the Strait of Gibraltar in the west to the Dardanelles leading to the Black Sea in the east, a Mediterranean cruise provides a rich kaleidoscope of interests and experiences . If you get hooked by its diversions and diversity, then cruising in these waters can soon become a habit, and happily, there are a myriad of varied itineraries from which to choose lasting from the week up to a month. If your travel plans are limited to the high summer season, then select an itinerary that avoids at least some of the more crowded ports, as while the streets of large cities such as Barcelona, Rome, Athens and Istanbul can handle the hoards, interior visits to cultural sites — museums, palaces, mosques and churches — can result in a disappointing and even an unpleasant experience. In our last update, we told you the story of Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio’s acquisiton of Crystal Cruises, and whilst the relaunch is still something of a work in progress, we wanted to give you an update on the current situation.

Crystal aficionados will no doubt be following the various social media threads, so I wanted to start by addressing the whole question of the previous company’s failure.

Crystal Cruises was owned by Genting Hong Kong, a holding company that owned Crystal Cruises, Star Cruises, Dream Cruises and the shipyard in Germany as well as some other leisure entities. Following the bankruptcy of the yard, the liquidators were called in. It is worth emphasizing that neither Manfredi Lefebvre nor the Heritage Group or its subsidiary A&K had anything to do with Crystal Cruises, although they were actively interested in buying the company as a going concern. However that was not to be, the bankers who held the mortgages on Crystal’s ships pulled the plug, and the company was closed down.

At the same time, the Miami team are hard at work developing itineraries for summer 2023 and beyond – they refer to creative, destination-led itineraries in many of the world’s best cruise destinations including Alaska, Asia, Europe, Australasia and the Americas.

The secret will be to recreate the 6-star, personalized service, comfort and sophisticated atmosphere for which these ships were known. It is not for nothing that they were referred to as the World’s Best. We know that many former employees have already signed up to return, and also that some key personnel from Silversea are jumping across to the ‘new Crystal’.

The latest news from the company is that prior to releasing itineraries, Crystal will accept fully refundable Open Deposits of $500 per room, which will give future guests the ability to select a suite or stateroom on an itinerary or itineraries of their choice during a priority booking window when Crystal Cruises opens sales for 2023 – 2024 cruises. Mundy Cruising is standing by to help UK guests place those deposits.

New itineraries were originally due to be on sale in the final quarter of 2022, however this has been pushed back due to some uncertainty around the refurbishment completion. They’ll be released before the Open Deposit priority booking window opens and new itineraries are available for sale.

Guests who have placed an Open Deposit and who then make a firm booking within a certain time period will benefit from the equivalent sum in the form of an onboard credit.

Crystal’s luxury expedition ship, Crystal Endeavor, which was launched in July last year, has been purchased by Silversea, and was christened just this week as Silver Endeavour in Antarctica.

Meanwhile, the veteran river vessel Crystal Mozart has been acquired by Seaside Collection, a renowned hotel group founded and controlled by Hamburg’s Gerlach family, and we have to presume they have a close eye on the remainder of the fleet also.

Finally it was interesting to learn just last week that Global Dream, the vessel under construction in Germany when the yard went bust, has been acquired by Disney ‘to sail for new markets outside US’.

Small-Ship Mediterranean Cruise: 9 Things to Remember About Life on Board

If you want a Greek islands experience that's intimate, explores lesser-seen sun-and-sand destinations, and experiences Greek culture at its best, then a small-ship adventure might suit you better than the giant cruise ships that are so heavily marketed to vacationers.

To show you how the small-ship experience differs from mainstream options, we took the Classical Greece  itinerary with Variety Cruises, a line that presents a selection of trips in the region, on board its 223-foot "Mega Yacht" (the company's term)  Voyager .

Is commercial shared yacht cruising around the Mediterranean in Greece for you? Here are some considerations.

The intimate size leaves few places to hide. 

Variety’s Voyager accommodates up to 72 guests in 36 cabins. By comparison, rival company WindStar’s offers a Greek itinerary aboard Wind Star ,  a 4-masted sailing ship that accommodates 148 guests, but there are even smaller ships on the market, such as Elixir’s The Elysium , with just 25 cabins.

The intimate ship size means fewer places to be alone, so you’ll unavoidably interact with most of your fellow passengers. That creates a familial atmosphere, but if you prefer to remain anonymous and keep to yourself, you might best stick to larger vessels.

As a solo traveler, I actually enjoyed mingling as much or as little as I wanted to, and I still managed to find the odd nook or cranny for myself, especially on the sun deck (pictured below). 

Amenities are limited, but they do the job.

A small ship can't offer a huge range of facilities, but there's still plenty to divert you.

On the Variety , the main deck (pictured below) served as a welcome place to relax in air conditioned comfort away from my cabin. 

Beneath that, the lower deck had an exercise area with a handful of machines (pictured below) plus a mini-spa with one treatment room, sauna, and Jacuzzi.  

On sea days, passengers relaxed on the sun deck's cushioned chaises. Some larger ships have facilities for swimming on board, but the Variety  is small enough that the crew permits swimming off the stern at scheduled stops, so I felt no need for a pool. Most days, we were exploring ports anyway.

The ship isn't too small for a bar, though, and each evening, the mixologist at  Voyager ’s al fresco bar (pictured below) shook up a cocktail of the day. When we anchored off Crete, the crew invited a local dance exhibition to come aboard, with the opportunity for passengers to join in.  

The ship's small size allows for more interesting ports.

All the cruise lines, including boutique ones like Variety, will call on the perennially popular islands of  Santorini and Mykonos . But one benefit of smaller lines is their boats can fit at smaller, lesser-visited island and mainland ports. Voyager ’s size allowed us to dock at the tiny island of Kythera in the Ionian Sea—it has no airport, so it's not ruined by the Jet Set crowd. Another unusual destination we hit was the UNESCO Medieval coastal rock town of  Monemvassia , on the mainland in the Peloponnese.  

Access to shore from the ship was either by walking directly ashore using a narrow gangplank or tendering on the ship’s small Zodiacs (life jackets provided). 

You'll probably sit with other passengers at dinner.

Unlike a huge cruise ship, there’s not a round-the-clock buffet with a huge selection; meals are served within set time periods without mandatory seat assignments. The circular tables of  Voyager ’s Horizons buffet dining room seat eight, so most guests will dine with others, although there were a few more tables on the veranda. Tables for two were uncommon and usually taken.

My Classical Greece itinerary served at least two full meals a day: always breakfast, then a buffet lunch or dinner. When we were in port, our schedules usually allowed for one full meal to be eaten in town, at the passengers' own expense, unless it was included in a tour. 

The cuisine favors local flavors.

On board, the chef focused on Mediterranean dishes such as moussaka, stuffed tomatoes, and bell peppers as well as humble crowdpleasers like pizza and pasta. Salad was plentiful, as were dips of homemade tzatziki and a choice of fruit or Greek desserts like baklava (pictured below). Special dietary requests were honored as long as they were placed in advance.

The first and last nights were catered, 5-course affairs in the presence of the captain.  

Cabins are cozy and beds aren't huge. 

At roughly 130 square feet (12 sq. m.), my Category B cabin (pictured below) located on the main deck, and because I was traveling alone, my bed was actually composed of two twin beds pushed together. (If I had been traveling with someone else, the beds could have been separated, but the space between them would have been a squeeze.)

On slightly rocky nights, my body would naturally gravitate into the depression in the center seam of the bed. Mattress toppers are available, or you can specify a true double mattress in some of Voyager ’s categories.  

On most small ships, your stateroom won't have a balcony or veranda, and window sizes vary even within the same category, so check the deck plan when you reserve. My cabin had two small windows that filtered in a little light, but they weren't panoramic. Strategically placed floor-to-ceiling mirrors lend a slightly more spacious feel. 

En-suite bathrooms (pictured below) are surprisingly large compared to the cabin, with great shower pressure and locally sourced gels and shampoos. Voyager may be small, but it's still designed for comfort. You'll get a shower but not a tub.

Between islands, the ship may pitch and roll.

On small ship cruises, which typically sail around the Greek islands during tourist season from April to October, the month you go can matter. In August, the strong Meltemi winds occurring across the Aegean are at their strongest, often reaching  7 on the Beaufort scale , enough to make the seawater foam from breaking waves.

The smaller the ship, the more the pitching and rolling are keenly felt, especially in August. (I have a cast-iron stomach, but the night we departed Athens, the ship was rolling so much that many of my fellow passengers headed straight to bed after dinner.) If you’re prone to seasickness, book a cabin as low as possible and in the middle of the ship, where motion is usually more limited.  

I find September is the best time to sail between the Greek islands. The waters become calmer and warmer for swimming, the sting of excessive summer heat recedes, and destinations become less crowded when schools return. 

Don't expect an elevator.

Small ship cruising is can be more difficult for passengers with mobility needs. Voyager had no elevator going between its four levels, and access to shore was either by gangway or a tiny tender boat. It helps to to be physically capable of getting in and out of the small Zodiac dinghies used to ferry passengers to some ports. 

Boutique small ships are cheaper than chartering a yacht.

A trip aboard a small luxury ship around Greece is a more affordable way to travel than chartering your own yacht with a group of friends. An eight-day Classical Greece voyage with Variety Cruises costs from US $2,160 per person in a Category C lower deck cabin, plus port fees.

Crewed yacht charters booked through agents such as  Yacht Charter Fleet  can easily add an extra zero to the end of that price.

Greek Island Cruise: The Best Way To Explore Greece?

D o you hate packing and unpacking? I do too. I just got back from a 5-week trip around Greece. During the first part of my trip, I had to switch hotels every couple of nights. Ugh! So it was a relief to finally board the Celestyal Crystal and stay put for my eight-day Greek Island Cruise ! I can’t wait to share with you why I think this is the best Greek Island Cruise to go Greek Island Hopping !

8-Day Greek Island Cruise “Idyllic Aegean”

There are a few reasons why I picked this cruise line and itinerary for my first Greek Island Cruise:

• The islands on the Idyllic Aegean were on my bucket list (Thessaloniki, Kusadasi/Ephesus, Crete, Santorini, Mykonos, and Milos).
• Celestyal Cruise Line stays longer at each destination, so you can experience the islands after the crowds leave. This made a BIG difference!!!
• They offer small group “ authentic excursions ” at many destinations, which is great if you want to have a more custom experience in Greece.
• With 1200 passengers, the Celestyal Crystal is a relatively small ship, which I prefer.
• I did the 3-Continent cruise with Celestyal in 2019 and loved it!!!

Greek Island Cruise Itinerary

As I was traveling with my 13-year-old niece, I found the Celestyal Idyllic Aegean cruise itinerary and tours offered a good mix of historical places, great food, beautiful islands, and stunning beaches that made this trip interesting for both of us. Here were some of the highlights at each of the Greek islands we visited.

Day 1: Piraeus/Athens

As we arrived the night before our cruise departed, we didn’t have time to explore Athens or Piraeus before we boarded the ship. I had been to Athens before, but it was my niece’s first time in the city, so we added a few days to explore Athens after the cruise.

We arrived on the ship pretty early, around 11 AM. There was almost no line to check in and we were on board the ship at around 11:15. After checking out our Junior Suite , we explored the ship and had a quick lunch at the buffet. By the time we returned, our bags were waiting for us in the room and we unpacked and got settled in before heading to dinner and watching the evening show “Mama Mia”.

I highly recommend getting to the ship early. Last time we did a cruise out of Piraeus, we checked in after lunch, and not only was the check-in process much longer due to long lines, but the whole day felt more rushed.

Starting in September, you might be lucky to sail on the newest ship of the Celestyal fleet, the Celestyal Journey . This 1260 cabin ship features 149 suites, two pools, seven restaurants, and eight lounges and bars. Can’t wait to sail on it, too!

Day 2: Thessaloniki

On our first stop, we explored the second-largest city of Greece, Thessaloniki, on a food tour. This was an “authentic experiences” tour, and it was fantastic. We were a small group of 6 hungry travelers, ready to eat our way through the city.

Our local guide was fantastic and shared some interesting stories about Thessaloniki while taking us to some of the city’s best restaurants, bakeries, and cafés. We tried things like traditional Greek coffee, bougatsa (phyllo dough pockets stuffed with either sweet cream or cheese), and a traditional meze spread at an ouzeria with all kinds of treats, such as grilled octopus, mussels, fava beans, fried zucchini flowers stuffed with goat cheese, and many more local delicacies.

After our delicious food tour, my niece and I strolled through the city and did some shopping before returning to the ship.

Day 3: Kusadasi/Ephesus

This was my second time in Kusadasi, but the first time for my niece, so we definitely wanted to see Ephesus. The crowds at the end of May/beginning of June were definitely more than the last time I visited in December, but I= think that the UNESCO Heritage site of Ephesus is a must – at least once.

My favorite place in Ephesus is the area of the Terrace houses, which are over 2000 years old. You have to pay an extra entrance fee, but it is worth it to see the stunning mosaics and wall paintings that are incredibly well-preserved.

Afterward, we visited a carpet factory. To be honest, this was not my cup of tea as the experience was very sales-y and I would have preferred some more free time in Kusadasi to explore.

Pro Tip: If you plan on buying sweets and souvenirs, don’t buy it in the shops in town. For many things, the prices inside the cruise ship terminal are much better ($8 vs $22 for a box of Turkish delight).

Day 4: Heraklion, Crete

Crete is the largest Island in Greece, and one of the biggest sights on the island is the Palace of Knossos . Knossos is often referred to as the first city of Europe, dating back to the Neolithic area around 7000 BC.

After spending our previous day in Ephesus, I thought it would be a good idea to skip another day of ruins and go on a scenic drive around the Cretian countryside to a picturesque mountain village instead.

Big mistake! Our tour was quite touristy and not as idyllic as I had hoped. Three big busses of tourists approximately doubled that small village’s population, making it a lot less “quaint.” We overheard several cruise ship guests who had gone to Knossos’s archeological site and LOVED it. I recommend choosing one of the Palace of Knossos excursions for this cruise stop.

Day 5: Santorini

Santorini is by far the most popular Greek island, and we were visiting at the beginning of the high season, so I was expecting big crowds instead of serene Instagram-able scenery. Don’t get me wrong, it was busy, but as all the other cruise ships were leaving, the island transformed and turned into the magical place that drew those crowds in the first place.

We started our day with a winetasting tour and visited two small villages. Our group was about 20 people, and we had a very nice experience without the crowds and saw some beautiful places in Santorini. We visited two wineries: Anhydrous Winery is within walking distance or a short taxi ride from the town of Fira and has excellent wines. But don’t miss Venetsanos Winery ! This winery has stunning views overlooking the whole caldera. What a spot to enjoy a glass of wine, no?

After our tour, we were dropped off near the cable car. As there were five cruise ships in Santorini, the wait time in the afternoon was approximately 1-1.5 hours. I felt bad for the other cruise ship travelers, as their visit to Santorini was cut even shorter by having to stand in line to make it back in time to the last tender.

Celestyal doesn’t leave Santorini until past midnight, so got to enjoy the island when it was a lot less crowded. We strolled up the coastal path to Imerovigli, a small village north of Fira to enjoy the views and then had dinner trying some of the delicious Santorini dishes , overlooking the sunset over the caldera. Definitely worth the splurge for this stunning view.

Our waitress said it was only about 10 more minutes by foot down the switchbacks from the restaurant to the tender boat harbor. That was a lie, ha! I attribute our 30+ minute descent to the fact that I was wearing flimsy sandals (the stones are very slippery!) and that we had to dodge the donkey droppings in the dark with flashlights.

Pro Tip: If you plan on walking up or down to the harbor, wear proper footwear and give yourself a little extra time before the last tender leaves.

Day 6: Mykonos

Since my niece and I enjoyed our food tour in Thessaloniki so much, my niece and I decided to do another one in Mykonos . This time, our group was a little bigger (17 people) but we had the chance to try some delicious food on this tour as well, while also getting to know the port city of Chora.

Mykonos is known as one of the high-society party islands of the Mediterranean and we got to enjoy a little glimpse of it as our ship was again the last one to leave the port well past midnight. Most cruise ships left the island between 3-5 PM. After they left, Mykonos transformed similarly to Santorini and felt like a completely different island.

Day 7: Milos

I was really looking forward to Milos. My niece and I signed up to go kayaking, and I could not wait to see the bright turquoise water with white limestone cliffs. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate. We were still able to kayak and had a fantastic time, but the grey sky turned the water into a similarly bleak color.

However, my niece and I still had a blast. Our guide showed us stunning beaches, hidden caves, and hot springs and even shared homemade snacks with us. It was my niece’s first time kayaking, and she did really well. I was super proud of her for trying something outside her comfort zone, and when we returned to the ship, she couldn’t stop smiling the rest of the day. What a great way to finish our Greek island cruise!

Day 8: Piraeus/Athens

Time flies when you are having fun, and before we knew it, we were already back in Piraeus, and it was time to disembark.

Greek Island Cruise with Celestyal Review

I am so glad I picked Celestyal for my first Greek isles cruise. The small ship, small group tours, and long time in port really made this cruise a perfect fit for me, as I am not a big fan of crowds and like to explore each destination a little deeper. Of course, each island deserves more than just a one-day stop, but I felt I got a good first glimpse of each cruise stop.

If you have limited time and want to see as much as possible and as many places as possible during your trip to Greece, then a Greek island cruise is the most convenient and cost-effective way. Seven different destinations in 8 days would not be possible in any other way.

Of course, a smaller ship like the Celestyal Crystal has not have quite as many amenities as some of those big cruise ships, but it still has everything you expect to find on a cruise ship, including spa, pool, jacuzzi, casino, evening performances and several restaurants. And since there is no sea day and the time in port is so long, I wouldn’t have had much time to take advantage of those amenities anyway.

On the other hand, a smaller ship and longer time in port also means that it is less invasive and disruptive for the locals. Yes, they depend on tourism, but when the roads are so busy that even emergency vehicles can’t get through, you can see the dark side of mass tourism. As we had more time in port, we also had more time to shop, eat, and drink at each destination, supporting the local economy. Celestyal Cruise Line is a Greek company with headquarters in Piraeus, so even the money for the cruise tickets goes back into the Greek economy.

If you are looking for a small ship Greek island cruise that lets you maximize your time at each cruise stop and want to avoid the big crowds, then Celestyal is for you. I highly recommend them and can’t wait to cruise with them again!

The Alternative to Huge Cruises? 3 Masts, 28 Sails and Wind Power.

We checked out the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit on a Mediterranean cruise. In this era of gargantuan ships, its elegant clipper design, wooden decks and relatively small size stands out.

From the bridge of the three-masted windjammer, the Sea Cloud Spirit , the captain called out the words we’d all been waiting for.

“Let’s set the sails!” he cried, after turning off the engines, while maneuvering to maintain an optimum angle for his 18 deckhands to climb into the shrouds and unfurl the ship’s 44,132 square feet of sails by hand.

Like acrobats, the crew scurried up the masts to the upper topgallant sails that rose nearly 200 feet above us. The ship’s captain, Vukota Stojanovic, later insisted that none of it was for show. “Whenever there is an opportunity to sail, we sail,” he said.

For the next hour, the crew hauled the ropes until the 28 sails were billowing in the wind, propelling the 452-foot-long ship — the world’s largest passenger sailing vessel on which the sails are raised by hand — toward its first port of call, Portofino, Italy.

At a time when cruise lines are packing their ever-more-gargantuan ships with water parks and basketball courts, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, with its old-fashioned clipper design and wooden decks, stands out. It is the newest ship from the Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises , and while it is the company’s biggest, Sea Cloud said it wanted to leave space for passengers to connect to the surrounding elements.

“Wherever you are on the ship, it feels like you are sitting on the water,” said Amelia Dominick, 71, a retired real estate agent from Cologne, Germany, who was on her third cruise onboard the Sea Cloud Spirit.

I had arrived for a four-night “taster sailing” from Nice, France, to the Ligurian region of Italy, designed to entice passengers to sign up for a longer cruise. Here’s what I found.

The ship and cabins

The Spirit has many comforts and luxuries, including a fitness center, library, hair salon and a spa with a Finnish sauna that overlooks the sea. The deck layouts are spacious, with nooks carved out for privacy and relaxation.

Sixty-nine spacious cabins have windows that open onto the sea. My room, a junior suite on the third deck, had two large arched windows, mahogany tables, a balcony and a comfortable couch and armchair. The marble bathroom was lavish, with a gold-plated sink and large jetted bathtub.

The elegant interior design is inspired by the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 for Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress of the General Foods Corporation, with glossy wooden panels and gold trimmings. The Sea Cloud was the largest private sailing yacht in the world before Post handed it over to the U.S. Navy for use as a weather-reporting vessel during World War II. The four-mast, 64-passenger ship has since been restored to its former glory and will sail across the Aegean and Adriatic this summer.

The experience felt authentic — even before the sails were set — with a detailed safety drill. On most cruises, the drill entails a safety video and signing in at an assembly point. But here, passengers put on their life jackets and walked through emergency scenarios that included rationing food supplies and fishing from the lifeboat.

Each day, the sails were set, even during heavy rain and wind speeds over 30 knots. Guests wanting to participate in the rigging are usually invited to do so, but the weather conditions made it too risky for this sailing.

“It was amazing to watch the work go into putting the sails up and down and to experience the wind power pulling the ship so fast without the engines,” said Malte Rahnenfuehrer, a 50-year-old psychologist from Zurich, who was traveling with his partner and two children.

The captain

It is rare for cruise passengers to see the ship’s captain after the initial welcome drinks or gala dinner. But Capt. Vukota Stojanovic was omnipresent throughout the cruise, from setting sails to lifeguarding to mingling with guests.

Originally from Montenegro, Captain Stojanovic piloted container ships for years. When he was asked to consider helming the original Sea Cloud nearly 10 years ago, he hesitated because he had no experience sailing. Even after he learned the ropes — and there are 340 ropes (known as running rigging) on the vessel — he was unsure. “I grew to love the sailings, the boats, the crew the lifestyle, but I still felt I belonged on container ships,” he said. “It would be a big adjustment, especially because I would have to shave every day,” he joked.

Eventually, he accepted the opportunity and worked tirelessly to learn how to sail and operate the ship. Today, he keeps an “open bridge” policy, allowing passengers to visit the control room, even when he is wrestling with the wind.

“The crew and the passengers are all part of the experience, and I like to meet people and receive their feedback,” Captain Stojanovic said.

Environment

Sea Cloud Cruises aspires to take a “gentle” approach, using wind power to drive its ships wherever possible, even if that means changing course for optimal weather conditions. When sailing is not possible, the Spirit has two diesel-electric engines that run on low-sulfur marine diesel fuel. The company is also working with ports that have shore power capabilities to plug into the local electric power.

Onboard, there is an emphasis on reusable bottles and paper straws, and crew members separate solid waste to be compacted and removed when in port.

Excursions and Activities

We made stops in Portofino, San Remo, Italy, and St.-Tropez, France, anchoring offshore and getting to land by tender — a contrast to the big cruise ships with their loud horns and thick plumes of exhaust spewing from their funnels.

For passengers wanting to take a dip (there is no pool), the crew marked an area in the water with floats and an inflatable slide. The water was frigid, but many passengers took the plunge from the swimming deck. Guests could also take “Zodiac Safaris” around the ship to get views of the vessel from the water.

Excursions ranged from food and wine tours to e-biking and beach trips. In Portofino, passengers were free to explore the sights independently, including the Castello Brown Fortress and the lighthouse on Punta del Capo rock. There was ample time to eat meals on shore as the ship did not depart until 11 p.m. Over the summer, the Sea Cloud Spirit will sail to Spain, Portugal, France and the Azores, among other destinations. On Nov. 11, she will depart for St. Maarten in the Caribbean for the winter.

Wherever the vessel goes, said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruise for North America, the company tries to “stay away from the crowds and ports where big cruise ships spit out 6,000 passengers.”

Summer prices, which include food and beverages, range from $3,995 for a four-night sailing in a superior cabin to $9,420 for a veranda suite. Seven-night sailings cost between $6,995 and $16,495.

Cruising to Alaska on a small luxury ship affords a very different experience than sailing through The Great Land on a larger vessel. On a smaller luxury ship, you'll enjoy the expected perks like fewer passengers and more personalized service – but you'll also physically get closer to the boundless wilderness, abundant wildlife, icy blue glaciers and majestic snow-capped mountains that you've waited a lifetime to see.

While the fares to sail on such vessels are quite a bit higher than those of larger cruise providers, the all-inclusive (or mostly all-inclusive) prices typically include all-suite accommodations with balconies, all meals, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi access, gratuities, welcome bottles of sparkling wine, pillow selection, some shore excursions and butler service. Best of all, you won't feel like you're being nickel-and-dimed while on board. As a special touch, the attentive crew members may even learn your name and memorize your preferred pre-dinner cocktail.

Unlike many mainstream lines, most luxury Alaska cruises do not offer pre- and post-cruise tours to extend your adventure. However, you can plan these experiences on your own through third-party providers.

Alaska Tour & Travel has pre-cruise packages that include visits to Denali National Park & Preserve and the small, quirky Alaska towns of Homer and Talkeetna. You can also see a different side of Alaska via a train ride on the Alaska Railroad, take a national parks tour that includes Kenai Fjords National Park or head northbound to Fairbanks , one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights (if you visit during aurora season, from late August to late April). In addition, the company can plan a self-drive tour from Anchorage to Seward, which includes a stay at a wilderness lodge, helicopter flightseeing over Knik Glacier and guided tours in the parks.

Silversea Cruises' small luxury ships are designed for adventurers interested in visiting a mix of Alaska's top ports and more rugged, off-the-beaten-track locales. Extended itineraries offer stops in less-visited destinations like the towns of Haines and Wrangell. On board, guests can expect a personalized experience that includes luxurious ocean-view suites with butler service, multiple gourmet dining options, complimentary alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, and attentive service with one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios in the industry.

Base fares for Silversea's 2024 and 2025 Alaska itineraries start at $3,250 per person. If you upgrade to Silversea 's door-to-door fare (which starts at $5,200 per person), you'll receive private chauffeur service from your home to the airport (and back home upon your return) and round-trip flights, with business class upgrades in some destinations.

Silversea also offers immersive pre- and post-cruise land experiences, departing from Seward, Alaska. Highlights include sightseeing flights over Denali National Park & Preserve or into bear country to see Alaska's magnificent grizzly bears. In Vancouver, travelers can take a flightseeing transfer to Victoria to tour the 55-acre Butchart Gardens or board the Rocky Mountaineer for a two-day train ride through the Canadian Rockies.

Silversea's Alaska itineraries extend from May to September, with voyages ranging between seven and 16 days. The line's newest and largest vessel, the 728-passenger Silver Nova , sails its inaugural Alaska season in 2024 along with two smaller ships, Silver Muse (596 guests) and Silver Shadow (392 guests). There are 35 Alaska voyages available in 2024. In 2025, luxury cruisers can hop aboard one of 45 scheduled voyages on either Silver Nova or the 596-guest Silver Moon .

For a seven-day itinerary, consider a sailing from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia. This voyage cruises the Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage and stops in the Alaska towns of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka and Ketchikan. Complimentary excursions in Ketchikan include a tour of Saxman Native Village; a visit to Bonfire Bay Oyster Farm, featuring a sea-to-table oyster tasting; the Alaskan Cultural, Culinary & Lumberjack show; the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafeast and a day as a fisherman aboard the Aleutian Ballard, as seen on Discovery Channel's "The Deadliest Catch." Regent Seven Seas Cruises' elegant Seven Seas Explorer sails the line's Alaska itineraries in 2024 and 2025. The lavish 746-guest ship was coined "The Most Luxurious Ship Ever Built" when it debuted in 2016; among its impressive features are the 3,875-square-foot Regent Suite and a high-end collection of art displayed throughout the ship, including works by Pablo Picasso.

Alaska voyages with Regent in 2024 and 2025 start at $4,799 per person. Upgraded 2-for-1 all-inclusive fares (starting at $5,499 per person) cover elegant all-balcony suite accommodations; round-trip airfare (business class on international flights); a one-night pre-cruise hotel package; free two- or three-night land programs; free unlimited shore excursions; free unlimited beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic); complimentary specialty dining; and prepaid gratuities. You'll also receive complimentary airport transfers, unlimited Wi-Fi access and valet laundry service.

Every suite style includes a private balcony, roomy closets and upscale finishes. Concierge Suites (and above) add cozy in-room amenities like cashmere blankets, perfect to bundle up in while you take in the scenery. Meanwhile, Penthouse Suites (and higher) include a private butler who can book excursions, make dinner and spa reservations, unpack your luggage, arrange for a private cocktail soiree in your suite and indulge any other special requests.

Between May and September 2024, Regent sails 22 Alaska voyages. There are 16 Alaska sailings scheduled for the same period in 2025. Itineraries range from seven to 14 nights. For plenty of scenic cruising days, consider a round-trip itinerary from Vancouver departing May 28, 2025. The cruise includes five relaxing days at sea, where you'll enjoy scenic cruising through the Inside Passage (twice), Hubbard Glacier (twice) and Endicott Arm Fjord. Ports of call in Alaska include Wrangell, Juneau , Skagway, Sitka, Seward, Icy Strait (Hoonah) and Ketchikan. You'll also have a full day in Victoria, British Columbia, before returning to Vancouver.

While in Wrangell, consider the Tongass Botanical Forest Walk excursion. Tongass National Forest is the largest national forest in the U.S., with towering old-growth trees and unique flora, fauna and ecosystems. While in the temperate rainforest with your naturalist guide, look for local wildlife like Sitka black-tailed deer, porcupines and birds of prey. Other complimentary excursions at this stop include a round of golf at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course; a canoe trip through Wrangell harbor and nearby islands, and a heritage tour about Tlingit culture and the history of the town.

Recently relaunched Crystal offers just seven voyages in Alaska aboard Crystal Serenity in July and August 2024. Or, opt for the July 2, 2024, round-trip sailing from Vancouver for three scenic cruising days in the Inside Passage, Endicott Arm and the Seymour Narrows.

The line's Aug. 13, 2024, round-trip sailing from Vancouver features a special guest: Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio, the executive chairman of A&K Travel Group. Viking Ocean Cruises' 11-day Alaska & the Inside Passage cruise is available on 11 dates during the 2024 season. It sails from Vancouver to Seward (or the reverse) on the 930-passenger Viking Orion . In 2025, the line offers the same itinerary on 22 dates between May and September, split between Viking Orion and its sister ship, the 930-passenger Viking Sea .

Viking's destination-focused itineraries are curated for travelers who are interested in history, science, culture and cuisine, as they feature onboard enrichment like lectures by Viking's resident historians. You'll also find regionally inspired dishes in The Restaurant and special access to unique tours and excursions ashore.

The line's mostly all-inclusive fares cover accommodations in spacious all-veranda staterooms and suites; beer, wine and soft drinks at lunch and dinner; meals at all the dining venues; one shore excursion in every port; free Wi-Fi access; 24-hour specialty teas, coffees and bottled water; complimentary access to The Nordic Spa & Fitness Center; and other upscale amenities.

Voyages traveling northbound from Vancouver include one day of scenic cruising through the Inside Passage before stopping in Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Skagway and Icy Strait Point in Alaska. The eighth day of the cruise sails through picturesque Yakutat Bay, which includes the Hubbard Glacier. The ship then calls on Valdez, Alaska, before the trip ends with two days in Seward.

While in Valdez, take an optional tour to explore the incredible scenery surrounding the small fishing town. Viking offers a kayaking trip to see the Valdez Glacier; a scenic cruise through picturesque Prince William Sound to view the Columbia Glacier; a wildlife cruise where you can look for humpback whales, orcas, porpoises, sea otters and bald eagles; a helicopter ride over the area's rugged, icy wilderness; or a UTV adventure through the Chugach Mountains to Mineral Creek Canyon.

Between May and August 2024, Seabourn Cruise Line will host 20 Alaska voyages aboard the Seabourn Odyssey , before the ship leaves the cruise line in the fall. In 2025, the line offers 27 Alaska sailings on Seabourn Quest. Both yacht-inspired ships accommodate up to 458 guests and feature Seabourn's signature all-inclusive amenities, including luxurious oceanfront suites with verandas; personalized service; complimentary fine wines and premium spirits; complimentary dining; and caviar served throughout the sailing. You'll also have a complimentary W-Fi package and an in-suite minibar stocked with your favorite beverages. Ashore, sign up for exclusive programs like shopping for fresh salmon, halibut and Alaska king crab alongside a Seabourn chef.

Guests booking Seabourn Quest for 2025 will be able to sample the line's new dining concept, Solis. Inspired by destinations in the Mediterranean, the menu features a fresh, modern take on traditional dishes and whimsical cocktails. The restaurant is a collaboration with master chef and culinary partner Anton Egger and senior corporate chef Franck Salein. In addition to dishes like salt-encrusted whole branzino and Tuscan-style steak, guests will also find a wide selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes.

The seven-day Alaska Fjords & Canadian Inside Passage itinerary on May 31, 2024, aboard Seabourn Odyssey, sails from Juneau to Vancouver and includes a day in either Tracy Arm or Endicott Arm, depending on the ice conditions. From there, you can take one of the optional guided excursions: Ventures by Seabourn. These tours are an additional cost but offer opportunities for up-close Zodiac, kayaking or catamaran experiences in the wilderness to see glaciers calving and view local wildlife, such as black bears, mountain goats, seals, wolves and seabirds.

You'll also enjoy many days of scenic cruising on this voyage, and have the opportunity for more optional adventures in Rudyerd Bay (Misty Fjords). The ship makes additional stops in Wrangell, Alaska, and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, before disembarking in Vancouver.

If you want to see stunning Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, then consider booking the seven-day Alaska Inside Passage & Glacier Bay sailing on May 10, 2024, from Vancouver to Juneau. This itinerary also includes the Seymour Narrows and Snow Pass, cruising Queen Island Sound and the Lynn Canal. There's a stop for Ventures by Seabourn activities like kayaking and Zodiac rides in the Inian Islands. The Alaska ports of call on this voyage are Ketchikan, Sitka, Icy Strait Point and Haines. You'll disembark in Juneau.

French luxury expedition line PONANT offers 10 Alaska cruises in 2024; itineraries span between seven and 11 nights. Aboard the 264-guest yacht-style Le Soléal, you'll meet up to 10 naturalist experts and guides specializing in geology, history, ornithology or marine or land mammals. Guests can attend onboard lectures and embark on Zodiac landings with the guides.

The ship features elegant staterooms and suites, a library, a spa, a hair salon and a gym. Guests will be treated to movies in the theater, wine tastings and cooking demonstrations throughout the expedition. All fine dining meals, 24-hour room service, an open bar (including an in-room minibar) and complimentary and unlimited Wi-Fi access are covered in the pricing.

Two of PONTANT's eight-night voyages from Vancouver to Sitka are in partnership with Smithsonian Journeys and are curated for English-speaking travelers. Fares for these expeditions include transfers to and from the ship and a shore excursion in each port. On board, you can attend talks and discussions hosted by two Smithsonian Journeys experts: geologist Scott Burns and natural history filmmaker John Grabowska.

On these voyages, there is a sea day after departing Vancouver. You'll cruise through the Johnstone Strait, where you'll have an excellent chance of seeing humpback whales and orcas. After a day spent in the Inside Passage, the ship will call on the village of Metlakatla, Alaska, on the western coast of Annette Island, which is home to the Tsimshians from British Columbia. Other unique Alaska ports of call in this itinerary include the commercial fishing town of Petersburg, the Tlingit village of Kake and the small fishing community of Alfin Cove.
