Holiday travel weather forecast: As winter storm bears down, some scramble to change plans

Chicago weather forecast shows significant amount of snow possible

WLS logo

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The coming storm is expected to create dangerous conditions on the roads, and havoc for airline travelers.

Many were already adjusting their flight plans Tuesday ahead of the holidays.

That storm is expected to bear down on Chicago right before Christmas.

SEE MORE: What can I do if my flight is canceled, delayed? How to prepare for likely 2022 holiday travel mess

So those who are choosing to fly are hoping they don't get stranded or stuck.

"I am so much relieved. I don't miss a Christmas. I can be home before the storm hits," said Dureti Gelgelu, who was heading to Oregon.

Some travelers landing at O'Hare Monday were happy to make it home before the storm.

Others visiting said they wasted no time re-booking their flights.

See storm timing, totals: Significant winter storm could bring more than a foot of snow by Christmas

Kelly Derr is in the area on a work trip, and was originally supposed to fly back home to Tennessee Thursday afternoon.

She re-booked her return flight before she even got off the plane.

"I don't want to be stranded here in Chicago when I've got six people coming into my house for the holidays," she said.

The Kotso family from the Rockford area planned a last minute trip to Mexico.

"It could be worse, right? We could be stranded down there or stranded here. I think I'd rather be down somewhere warm." Steven Kotso said.

Airlines and transit agencies are already warning people traveling by air, rail or road to be ready for the arrival of treacherous winter conditions.

RELATED: Airlines issue travel waivers ahead of massive 'bomb cyclone' of wintry weather

Most airlines currently have weather waivers in place.

That means you can change your flights for free, if you have flexible travel plans.

So far, there have not been any major cancellations.

The airlines predict the busiest travel day at O'Hare will be Thursday, as crowds return to pre-pandemic numbers.

The Chicago Department of Aviation said it's prepared for the storm.

"We have 500 staff members who are ready to work 24/7 and 350 pieces of snow removing equipment, lots of salt and lots of de-icer for the roadways," said Karen Pride, with the Chicago Department of Aviation.

Some travelers even asked Santa to use his magic to keep the planes on schedule Tuesday.

Ariana Rafaty is flying to Aruba with lots of family. They're feeling fortunate to miss all the snow.

"We kind of scheduled this in advance. We lucked out since we're not gonna be here while it's really bad, but I'm really grateful that were able to go somewhere," she said.

Travelers are urged to check with their airlines during the week to make sure their flights are not canceled.

As holiday travelers buzzed throughout the airport, there was a large emergency response at O'Hare's Terminal 1 about 6:30 a.m., as Chicago fire crews arrived to assist the Federal Aviation Administration in investigating a report of a suspicious package , CFD said.

travel weather forecast chicago

Authorities cordoned off sections of Terminal 1 temporarily, but caution tape was removed by about 7 a.m.

"I saw a bunch of emergency lights, and I was like 'oh great we're gonna be late' but we're not late," traveler Jeff Andersen said.

CPD said officers responded to a threat, but the scene has been secured.

Travelers are allowed to move throughout the terminal again.

It’s Time to Sweat. The East Coast’s First Heat Wave Is on the Way.

The abrupt arrival of summer will bring stifling temperatures from Chicago to New York, with little relief overnight.

A commuter on the subway unsticks his sweaty polo shirt from his chest.

By Judson Jones

Judson Jones is a meteorologist and reporter for The Times.

Prepare to sweat on the East Coast through next week. The first heat wave of the summer is coming.

The weather pattern is shifting, and a heat dome will traverse from the West to the Eastern United States, baking most of the eastern half of the country, including major cities from Chicago to New York, in stifling temperatures for days.

Dangerous Heat Forecast in the U.S. ›

See detailed maps about the latest heat index forecasts.

A forecast map for Sunday

Data updated as of June 16, 2024.

What makes this noteworthy and potentially dangerous is the timing. The first heat wave of the season can come as a shock to the human body, which hasn’t entirely adapted to summer swelter.

New Yorkers, for example, have had a moderately light season thus far, with temperatures not yet reaching a Popsicle-melting 90 degrees. Central Park typically hits 90 for the first time in the first week of June.

Here are three things to know about next week’s heat.

Temperatures will feel warmer than the forecast calls for, making it feel over 100 degrees at times.

The heat wave will be widespread across the entire eastern half of the United States, with temperatures struggling to fall below 70 degrees when the sun goes down, providing little overnight relief.

Daily records could be broken in the Midwest and Northeast, but these will likely not be monthly or all-time records.

These temperatures are abnormal for June

As far as summer heat waves go, this isn’t necessarily extreme. According to Bryan Jackson, a meteorologist with the Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Md., it is more likely to be a typical summer heat wave and is “not an event to overhype.”

The pattern and location of this heat wave looks remarkably similar to that of a heat wave that struck in June 1994, forecasters said Friday .

That summer reporters from The New York Times said that the heat “was like a blast from an open oven door” and that “emergency rooms reported an increase in back injuries to people who strained to install air-conditioners quickly.”

What concerns Mr. Jackson and other forecasters is that, as with the 1994 heat wave, temperatures are expected to be abnormally high for June, and the heat could persist for days and in some areas through the entire week.

The duration is of particular concern: The more days in a row of persistent record hot temperatures, the more impact heat has on the body.

The heat begins earlier in the Midwest and South

The forecast shows that this heat wave may likely last beyond Friday and could begin as early as Sunday in the Midwest and Tuesday in the Northeast.

In the South, people in places like Atlanta will have a precursor heat event this weekend, with the actual temperature rising to nearly 100 on Saturday.

But the air is expected to be drier than what people from Atlanta are commonly used to, and in the proceeding days, the temperature might drop, but the humidity will be on the rise, making it feel as hot or hotter than it was on Saturday.

The moisture will also spread across the Midwest and into the Northeast as the temperatures rise, often making it feel much hotter than the actual temperature and reducing the amount the temperature will cool off at night.

The heat dome may allow for warmer temperatures than forecast

Most areas will likely reach a heat index in the 90s to low 100s, and people should take extreme caution, meaning there is some risk of heat stroke, heat cramps or heat exhaustion after long exposure or exercise outdoors. Some locations may even reach a heat index with dangerous or extremely dangerous thresholds.

There is always a worry that the temperatures and heat index will climb to temperatures higher than advertised, Mr. Jackson said.

The heat dome phenomenon, like what will occur next week, allows for a layer of the atmosphere to act like a clear lid that lets warm air in but won’t let it escape. This pattern allows for at least some probability that temperatures could reach 100 degrees in some locations, pushing above the current forecast and creating more dangerous conditions.

The warmest days in the Northeast are expected to be Tuesday through Thursday, and the best place to cool off might be by the seashore or lakeshore, where the beach breezes may help regulate the heat.

Father's Day weekend will be hot in much of the US. Then comes a dangerous heat wave.

travel weather forecast chicago

Father's Day weekend started Saturday with warm temperatures across much of the country – and forecasters say it's only going to get worse.

In the Southwest , Gulf Coast, Southeast and Midwest, the heat has already arrived with temperatures in the nineties or higher expected by federal forecasters on Father's Day in parts of California, Texas, Tennessee, Kansas, South Carolina and other states.

Next up: Searing heat in the Northeast. Over 135 million people from Chicago to New York should brace for high temperatures next week, AccuWeather meteorologists said.

By that point, much of the nation will face unseasonably warm temperatures, according to an outlook from the federal Center for Weather and Climate Prediction. Forecasters expect above-average temperatures in parts of every state between June 20-24 – with the most abnormally warm weather being concentrated in the Northeast.

Heat preparedness: Massive heat wave heading for USA next week. Cities have been preparing for this.

Summer already started (kind of)

Officials have warned people to look for signs of heat-related illness before the summer solstice on June 20 . But from a meteorologist's perspective, summer has already started, Andy Chiuppi, a senior meteorologist for the National Weather Service Memphis office, said.

Along the Mississippi River, Memphis is expected to see temperatures reach 95 on Saturday – 5 degrees above normal at this time of year – with creeping humidity that places the heat index at above 100 degrees. Father’s Day could be hotter, teetering on heat advisories if the heat index surpasses 105, Chiuppi added.

“We know it's really the first hot weekend of 2024 for us,” Chiuppi told USA TODAY. “We're just pushing out all the safety information: people make sure they're staying hydrated. Even if you're not going outdoors, make sure you're drinking enough water and fluids.”

What to avoid with heat

Tennessee health officials warned residents to take precautions while in the sun. People should avoid being outside at the hottest time of day, a state health department post said. Chiuppi added people shouldn't leave children or pets inside cars. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends taking breaks when possible and staying in the shade as much as possible.

“When combined with warm overnight lows, major heat risk could affect anyone without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration,” the NWS national forecast said Saturday. “Be sure to remain weather aware and follow proper heat safety!”

Mental health: Farmers have a high suicide rate. Therapists struggle to connect with them.

Before next week's heat wave, New York City officials said this weekend's weather is relatively cool, in the 70s. Now is the time to install an air conditioner or locate the nearest cooling center, an Office of Emergency Management social media post said.

“Great time to prepare & make a plan for next week’s high heat which could last through next weekend!” the post said.

How to prepare, check in

People should know the signs of heat illness such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

Extreme heat kills and maims: Here are some of its victims from across the US.

People at greatest risk are young children, elderly people, outdoor workers and those who have chronic diseases, mental illness or take certain medications that make it difficult to regulate their body temperatures, the CDC said . Additionally, those who may not have access to reliable AC are at risk, as are others who live in areas called urban heat islands that are warmer due to more pavement and buildings — and less green space.

Experts previously told USA TODAY it's best to check in on those who may be vulnerable with heat.

Winter storm warning in effect for entire Chicago area with ‘downright dangerous travel'

Heavy snow and strong wind gusts were already leading to multiple crashes friday morning, especially in counties to the west, by nbc chicago staff • published january 12, 2024 • updated on january 12, 2024 at 7:35 am.

Editor's Note: We're tracking the winter storm all day. You can find the latest weather updates in our winter storm live blog here .

The entire Chicago area was under a winter storm warning Friday, with some counties already seeing heavy and wet "bursts" of snow as a powerful winter snowstorm began to take hold across all of Northeastern Illinois and Northwest Indiana.

Watch NBC Chicago local news and weather without login

"A snowy 24 hours is expected," NBC 5 Meteolrogist Alicia Roman said. As of 4:30 a.m. Friday, snow had already begun to fall at a fast clip, with more significant snowfall beginning to pile up to the west, in DuPage, Kendall, Grundy and LaSalle counties.

NBC 5 Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes reported thundersnow in LaSalle County, where the NBC 5 Storm Team's pinpoint radar captured flashes of lightning. In DeKalb County, on I-88 at Peace, an Illinois Tollway traffic camera showed the highway entirely covered in snow, with low visibility as more snowflakes fell.

"Take your time if you have to go somewhere," Roman said early Friday morning. "Roadways for some are already treacherous."

According to NBC 5 Traffic Reporter Kye Martin, traffic accidents and crashes had already begun to follow the storm's track, with multiple crashes reported to the west.

Chicago's public pools will open for the season on Monday – with a major change

Friday afternoon and into the evening , another wave of accumulating snow and dangerous travel was expected.

With that round, areas north and northwest of Chicago are likely to see the biggest impacts, with up to 6 inches of additional accumulation still possible, combined with dangerous wind gusts of up to 45 mph.

Feeling out of the loop? We'll catch you up on the Chicago news you need to know. Sign up for the weekly Chicago Catch-Up newsletter here.

As the snow continues to fall, here's a breakdown of the latest predicted snow timing, totals and more.

Winter Storm Warnings

Winter storm warnings went into effect at 3 a.m. Friday for Lake, McHenry, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage and Central Cook Counties Illinois, as well as Northern LaPorte County in Indiana, and Kenosha County in Wisconsin.

That warning was expected to continue through 12 p.m. Saturday.

"Heavy snow, strong winds and dangerous conditions expected," the National Weather Service warned. "Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches and wind gusts up to 45 mph expected."

"Travel could be very difficult to impossible, especially away from Lake Michigan," the NWS said, adding that the hazardous conditions were expected to impact both the morning and evening commutes."

In Lake, Porter, and Newton Counties in Indiana, and Kankakee County in Illinois, a winter weather advisory was in effect.

Around 9:30 a.m., LaSalle, Kendall Grundy, Southern Cook and Will Counties, were downgraded from a winter storm warning to a winter weather advisory.

In those parts, snow total accumulations were expected to be between 3-6 inches, as snow was expected to mix with rain at times. However, strong wind gusts of up to 45 miles per hour were expected in those parts as well, the NWS said.

'Treacherous commute this morning'

One of the largest threats the storm brings will be for travelers and commuters.

"Strongly consider postponing travel," a tweet from the NWS said early Friday. The tweet specifically pointed to areas across the Chicago area, away from Lake Michigan and west of I-90/94.

Snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour were expected to fall through 10 a.m., the NBC 5 Storm Team said, with winds gusting between 40 and 50 miles through the morning.

As the day goes on, the NWS warned travelers to expect "downright dangerous travel conditions" across much of the area, especially in Northern Illinois during the morning and evening commutes as the snow continues to ramp up.

Some small crashes were reported Friday morning across area road ways, with air travel also beginning to snarl.

As of 5:30 a.m., O'Hare issued a ground stop , with more than 700 flights canceled across O'Hare and Midway airports. That ground stop transitioned to a ground delay later Friday morning.

Storm Timing

"Bursts" of heavy snow to the west began occurring overnight and into Friday morning, especially in counties to the west. That was expected to continue through the morning commute, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.

Later Friday morning, locations south of Interstate I-80 and potentially near Lake Michigan are expected to see snow transition to rain, with precipitation across the area getting lighter before conditions worsen later in the day.

The precipitation is expected to pick back up around or after 2 p.m. as wind gusts of 30 mph, possibly even higher, kick in.

Here’s a timeline of expected winter weather impacts through Sunday, with a major winter storm causing dangerous travel through early Saturday, followed by the arrival of the first bitterly cold air mass of the season. #ilwx #inwx pic.twitter.com/S4zLRSxs37 — NWS Chicago (@NWSChicago) January 12, 2024

Heavy snow areawide is likely for the evening commute, though lower snowfall totals are likely along the Lakefront. The largest snowfall totals are expected to fall after 5 p.m. and into the overnight hours as temperatures continue to drop.

According to the NWS, near-zero visibility, snow covered roads and dangerous travel can be expected Friday night and overnight with winds expected to gust as high as 45 miles per hour.

Predicted snowfall totals

The latest snowfall predictions showed between 8 and 12 inches of snowfall by Saturday morning for the counties in the winter storm watch. Closer to the lake however, those totals are expected to be slightly lower, in the 6-10 inch range, Roman said.

"A foot of snow will be possible in some parts," Jeanes said.

To the southwest, 6-10 inches of snow could fall, with between 4 and 6 inches possible in Kankakee and Northwest Indiana.

By Saturday evening, the snow is expected to taper.

Wind chills will drop to -20 and -30 degrees Sunday through Wednesday, with 20-30 mph wind gusts expected. These temperatures will mark the coldest days seen in the city since the end of January 2019.

The NBC 5 Storm Team is tracking this forecast as it develops. Stay tuned for updates as each system approaches.
