  • Science Fiction

The 13th Star Trek film, the third in the newly rebooted series. JJ Abrams, director of Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), steps aside for Fast & Furious stalwart Justin Lin.

Halfway through their five-year mission to boldy go where no-one has gone before, the crew of the USS Enterprise is forced to abandon ship and battle for their survival on an unknown planet. Hidden inside a nebula, this is where Krall (Idris Elba) has been planning an audacious attack on the Federation. Simon Pegg wrote the screenplay alongside Doug Jung after the initial effort by Roberto Orci (at one point set to direct) was rejected for being "a little bit too  Star Trek -y", according to Pegg.

Star Trek Beyond | Ratings & Reviews

Rotten tomatoes® rating, audience score rating, children & media rating.

"Early on in Star Trek Beyond, we hear Kirk, via his Captain's Log, amusingly describe things on the Enterprise as having become "episodic" after several years in space. It's an articulation of the film's stated intention to evoke the spirit of the original series, a goal the film achieves without devolving into a nostalgia run."

Flicks, Dominic Corry

"It’s a sturdily built movie that gets the job done, and it’s got a likable retro vibe."

Variety

"Powered by a spirited sense of adventure and a nice teamwork dynamic, it’s fun, but not essential, summer viewing."

Total Film

"This is all fun all the time, a dizzying carnival of wisecracks, fisticuffs, explosions, chases and truly eye-popping effects."

Time Out

"It is the inter-relationship of the Enterprise’s crew which is the real source of drama. An entertaining adventure."

The Guardian

"Star Trek Beyond is exactly what a Star Trek movie only ever really needs to be – a great episode. No more, no less."

Stuff

"A highly entertaining entry guaranteed to give the franchise continuing life."

Hollywood Reporter

"A bold, entertaining spectacle."

FilmInk

"A return to fun, and a return to form for the new version of the old Trek."

What Star Trek Titles Are Streaming on Netflix?

Alex Hirlam · @AlexanderHirlam September 22nd, 2017 - 10:20 am ET · Updated: September 22nd, 2017, 11:57 am

star-trek-netflix-titles

Star Trek is a name that almost everyone recognizes, it has been around for decades and has inspired millions around the world. It’s had extensive coverage in all manner of media formats but one of the biggest has been its TV and movie presence. Since its inception, there have been 726 individual Star Trek episodes spread out across decades. We’ve also seen 13 feature-length movies too.

We are also lucky enough to welcome a new Netflix Original  Star Trek: Discovery. The first new Star Trek TV show in 16 years will be coming to UK Netflix on the 25th of September (with new episodes releasing every Monday). But for our viewers from the United States, the show will debut on September 2nd on CBS  and made available on their streaming service, CBS All Access.

The new show stars  The Walking Dead ‘s Sonequa Martin-Green as Burnham, first officer of  The Discovery . The series is set 10 years before the original ventures of Kirk and Spock of the Enterprise.

The premise for the majority of the shows stays relatively similar. It takes place throughout the Universe onboard an intergalactic ship, For example, the Enterprise or the Voyager. Over the years we have been introduced to many crews, comprised of different actors and actresses. There is much debate on which adaptation of Star Trek is the best, but one thing is for sure. It has developed a cult following and even has a university degree dedicated to learning the language in the show.

As the Star Trek universe has expanded, it has become increasingly more difficult to keep track of all the content streaming on Netflix. But don’t worry, we’re here to cover every Star Trek title currently available, due to release in the future, and has sadly left our Netflix screens.

Has Streamed on Netflix at some point but left

Back in July of 2016, 7 Feature Length Star Trek Movies tragically left US  Netflix. Along with this blow, it seems like other the months, all the Star Trek movies have been removed from American Netflix.

Feature Length Movies

  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)
  • Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

How to stream the Star Trek Movies in the US

How to stream the star trek tv shows in the us, how to stream the star trek movies in the uk, how to stream the star trek tv shows in the uk.

Here's our Star Trek streaming guide, so you know where to go boldly where you've never gone before... Without leaving your sofa. We've come up with this Star Trek streaming guide because since the first ever episode aired back in 1966, there's been  a huge number of additions into the franchise.

Star Trek is currently in a bit of a purple patch for content as Paramount Plus , which is the home of all things Star Trek, is responsible for several new shows in recent years. But, it's not just new content, you'll also find where to stream the classics both movies and TV series below.

Before, Star Trek content was scattered all around different streaming services and searching for what you wanted to watch could feel like hunting for a cloaked Bird of Prey. However, these days you're able to stream all Star Trek content out there on Paramount Plus. However, we do have round-ups of the best sci-fi movies and TV shows on Netflix , Disney Plus and Amazon if you want to check them out.

You can also check out our take on the Star Trek movies, ranked so you know which movies to beam up onto your device. While Paramount Plus has everything Star Trek out there, you can find the odd bit of content on other platforms. So, below you'll find where you can watch what, regardless of where you're based, in our Star Trek streaming guide.

The Star Trek movies can be divided into three tidy groups: the original cast, the Next Generation cast, and the reboot cast. All of them can be found on Paramount+. However, Paramount+ isn't the only place you can stream the movies and in some cases you can rent or buy from places such as Amazon .

Here’s how to stream the Star Trek movies in the U.S., in order of release:

Star Trek: The Motion Picture — Paramount+ Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan — Paramount+ Star Trek III: The Search for Spock — Paramount+ Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home — Paramount+ Star Trek V: The Final Frontier — Paramount+ Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country — Paramount+ Star Trek: Generations — Paramount+ Star Trek: First Contact — Paramount+ Star Trek: Insurrection — Paramount+ , Spectrum Star Trek: Nemesis — Paramount+   Star Trek (2009) — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek Into Darkness — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek Beyond — Paramount+ , DIRECTV , Freevee

When it comes to Star Trek on the small screen, you can find them all in one place. Paramount+ not only has every episode of every legacy Trek show, it’s also the home of all the new Star Trek programming, such as Picard and Strange New Worlds. If you’re a Trekkie, you absolutely want to have Paramount+ to keep up with the object of your affection. A word of warning though, other streaming platforms may only have select episodes or series to stream.

Star Trek: The Original Series — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek: The Next Generation — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek: Deep Space Nine  — Paramount+ , Sling , Spectrum Star Trek: Voyager — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek: Enterprise — Paramount+ Star Trek: Discovery — Paramount+ , DIRECTV Star Trek: Picard — Paramount+ Star Trek: Short Treks — Paramount+ Star Trek: Lower Decks — Paramount+ Star Trek: Prodigy — Paramount+ ,   DIRECTV , FuboTV , Spectrum Star Trek: The Animated Series — Paramount+ Star Trek: Strange New Worlds — Paramount+

Now that Paramount+ has arrived in the U.K, streaming Star Trek is a lot easier. You can view most of the movies on the streaming platform. Star Trek Beyond is the exception but that can be found on Amazon Prime. If you're not prepared to subscribe to Paramount+, the movies are available to rent or buy from a number of different platforms.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture — Paramount+ Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan — Paramount+ Star Trek III: The Search for Spock — Paramount+ Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home — Paramount+ Star Trek V: The Final Frontier — Paramount+ Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country — Paramount+ Star Trek: Generations — Paramount+ Star Trek: First Contact — Paramount+ Star Trek: Insurrection — Paramount+ Star Trek: Nemesis — Paramount+ Star Trek (2009) — Paramount+ , Amazon Prime Star Trek Into Darkness — Paramount+ , Amazon Prime Star Trek Beyond — Amazon Prime

Now that Paramount+ has reached those across the pond, the U.K. can enjoy streaming Star Trek shows as well. Netflix is also another great option to fulfil your Trekkie viewing needs, especially if you're interested in checking out Star Trek: The Animated Series, which is exclusive to Netflix.

However, for the likes of Picard and Lower Decks, you’ll have to hop on over to Amazon Prime. It's worth noting that platforms such as SkyGo may only have a select number of episodes or series to stream.

Star Trek: The Original Series —   Netflix , Paramount+ Star Trek: The Next Generation — Netflix , Paramount+ , SkyGo Star Trek: Deep Space Nine  — Netflix , Paramount+ Star Trek: Voyager — Netflix , Paramount+ Star Trek: Enterprise — Netflix , Paramount+ Star Trek: Discovery — Paramount+ Star Trek: Picard — Amazon Prime Video , Paramount+ Star Trek: Short Treks — N/A Star Trek: Lower Decks — Amazon Prime Video Star Trek: Prodigy — Paramount+ , SkyGo Star Trek: The Animated Series — Netflix Star Trek: Strange New Worlds — Paramount+

Review Overview

James R | On 14, Apr 2017

Director: Justin Lin Cast: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban Certificate: 12

Where does a beloved sci-fi franchise boldly go, after boldly going back on itself immediately after a reboot, to distinctly middling effect? The trailer for Star Trek Beyond seemed to have a surprising answer: depart from the franchise entirely and create a loud, banging action flick accompanied by Beastie Boys. So far, so Justin Lin. But forget Fast & Furious: this third outing in Nu-Trek is a wonderfully nostalgic affair, one that feels more like an episode of the TV series than a blockbuster.

The film begins subversively, by ditching the Enterprise altogether in a shock attack in the middle of space that leaves the crew crash-landed on a planet in the back-end of the galaxy. But that’s just the set-up for a classic Trek format: the story where the crew are stranded in a foreign world and have to rely on their wits – and each other – to stay alive.

The script comes courtesy of Doug Jung and long-time Trekkie (and Warsie) Simon Pegg and you can feel the fan service in every sentence. That might sound like a criticism, but it’s perhaps the highest compliment you can pay a series that is so intermeshed with its own fandom. Beyond doesn’t just understand what fans want; it delivers it, and it delivers it well. Splitting up the cast into pairs, it places the focus on its ensemble interacting rather than things exploding, allowing maximum opportunity for laughter and also the chance to tease out new character details that might otherwise be overlooked.

Where previously the heart of Star Trek has been Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto), Bones (Karl Urban – thankfully given more to do) is the one who buddies up with the Vulcan, producing an unexpected double act that might be even more entertaining than the usual, as both stick to logic and reason in entirely different ways. Both have a knack for spitting out barbed quips, while blaced against Bones’ gruff cynicism, Spock’s humanity has never felt more apparent.

Pine’s Kirk, meanwhile, just gets better, as the shipless captain is accompanied by Chekov (the late Anton Yelchin). It’s hard to imagine anyone stepping into either of their shoes, and Pine’s superb performance (always two steps away from Shatner) is deceptively generous, his brooding reflection upon his legacy and future never overshadowing Yelchin’s Chekov. Zoe Saldana’s Uhura is as disappointing wasted as ever, while the revelation that John Cho’s Sulu is gay seems underplayed, after all that controversy among blinkered fans, but gives his similarly under-used sidekick a beautiful new depth.

Pegg’s Scotty, perhaps unsurprisingly, gets all the best lines, as he finds himself working with Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), a bad-ass alien also fighting to survive on the hostile planet. She’s got a back-story that connects her to Krall, our villain, who’s after an artefact that’s aboard the Enterprise and has reasons to want the Federation destroyed. Between Bones, Spock, Kirk and Boutella, Idris Elba’s bad guy winds up struggling to make an impression – his evil plan and motivations will become guessable within the first 30 minutes – but if this is a fairly standard Star Trek narrative, the film doesn’t suffer from sticking closely to its roots.

A witty final act rivals the dazzling destruction of the opening set piece, but manages to do so in way that feels delightfully old-fashioned, from Kirk on a motorbike to, yes, a clip of the Beastie Boys. Justin Lin puts together these classic tropes and new ideas at a breakneck pace, resulting in a sequel whose boldest decision is simply not to venture beyond what works: a great cast, enjoyably old-school production design and a strong sense of morals. Star Trek Beyond feels more like an episode of the TV series than a blockbuster – and it’s all the better for it.

  • Trivia After production on the film was completed, and a month before the film's release, Anton Yelchin died in a freak vehicle accident. During the ending credits, there is a dedication that reads, "For Anton".
  • Goofs The amount of ships and soldiers that the enemy has in its swarm changes dramatically during the final battle, from a few thousand to tens/hundreds of thousands when they attack the station. However, previously in the film, it is stated that the planet has deep and large underground caverns so it is entirely possible that there were more ships underground. Also, the amount of soldiers that would be needed to pilot all the ships would be huge as it was shown that they contain at least one soldier in each ship. But when they were watching the video logs near the film's ending, Captain Edison clearly states that they found drones. It is quite possible that the bulk of the enemy fleet is made up of drones and controlled by the hive mind that the music disrupts.

Commander Spock : If I may adopt a parlance with which you are familiar, I can confirm your theory to be horseshit.

Nice self-contained Star Trek episode, with a nice space station gravity skit, but otherwise not particularly profound in any way.

too long, too confusing, too unbelievable... but a fun ride nonetheless

I think this was the 3rd movie that the Star Trek reboot really needed. The 1st was riddled with time travel sci fi shenanigans while the 2nd was overwrought with exposition but this? This was a solid, good ol' action adventure that followed a tried and true formula. Which begs the question, what will be next? A repeat of this and the franchise may be branded as lazy, or not "Star Trek" enough. I just hope these films don't deteriorate into another overloaded Hollywood Sci Fi action-adventure. There's a balance of sophistication and fun still to be found on this "final frontier"

Definitely makes up for the mediocrity of Star Trek Beyond.

‘Star Trek Beyond’

Where the 2009 Star Trek is a jam-packed rousing action movie, and  Star Trek Into Darkness is a puzzle box, the third movie in the rebooted series finally sees the crew of the Enterprise acting like their TV counterparts: exploring brave new worlds, boldly going, etc. Though it went a little smaller in scale than the previous two movies, the Justin Lin directed feature is still full of delightful action scenes, and sneaky tributes to the entire history of the franchise, as this was released to celebrate the 50th anniversary.

Star Trek Beyond – Official Trailer

Star Trek Beyond – What to Expect from the Movie?

Helmed by director Justin Lin and overseen by producer J.J. Abrams, Star Trek Beyond stands as the thirteenth installment within the beloved Star Trek franchise. Centering on the charismatic Captain James T. Kirk, brilliantly portrayed by Chris Pine, the film delves into his introspective journey while undertaking Starfleet’s lengthy five-year mission.

However, when the Enterprise falls under the merciless assault of Krall, masterfully depicted by Idris Elba, the crew finds themselves scattered and ensnared. Their arduous quest encompasses reuniting, vanquishing Krall, and safeguarding their cherished home base from impending catastrophe.

Captain Kirk Reflects on His Role

In the film Star Trek Beyond, we witness Captain James T. Kirk deep in contemplation regarding his purpose within Starfleet. He finds himself questioning the motivations that led him to enlist and experiences a sense of monotony in the routine nature of their ongoing five-year exploratory mission. As the anniversary of his father’s passing approaches, his introspection intensifies.

The Enterprise Sets Course to Nebula

At the present location of the USS Enterprise, Yorktown, an escape pod arrives carrying an extraterrestrial woman who claims her vessel is stranded in an uncharted nebula nearby. The Enterprise embarks on a rescue mission, unknowingly walking into a carefully laid trap.

Krall attacks the Enterprise

Upon reaching the nebula, the Enterprise falls victim to a ruthless attack from a vast swarm of small ships controlled by the merciless Krall. The swarm systematically tears the Enterprise apart, causing the ship to crash on the neighboring planet, Altamid. Krall’s ultimate goal is to acquire an ancient artifact present on the Enterprise, which he plans to weaponize as a bioweapon.

The Crew Scattered and Captured

The surviving crew members find themselves scattered across the planet’s surface, with many falling into Krall’s clutches. Meanwhile, Kirk, Chekov, and Kalara discover the saucer section of the Enterprise, only to unravel Kalara’s treachery before her demise. Concurrently, Scotty encounters Jaylah, a resourceful scavenger residing within the crashed USS Franklin, a long-lost vessel missing for centuries.

Kirk and Team Plan a Rescue

Kirk, Chekov, and Jaylah reunite, pooling their efforts to repair the Franklin in order to mount a daring rescue operation for the rest of the captive crew. In the midst of their endeavors, Spock, injured and accompanied by Bones, receives news of Ambassador Spock’s (his alternate reality older self) passing.

Kirk vs. Krall

As the team successfully liberates the crew, they uncover Krall’s true identity as the former Starfleet Captain Balthazar Edison, along with his diabolical plan to annihilate Yorktown using the ancient artifact. In a gripping final showdown, Kirk manages to vanquish Krall and propel him, along with his weapon, into the depths of space, effectively safeguarding Yorktown.

The Crew’s Decision and a New Voyage

Opting to remain the captain of the Enterprise, Kirk declines an offer for a Vice Admiral position. Spock chooses to continue serving in Starfleet while nurturing his relationship with Uhura. With renewed fervor for space exploration and discovery, the crew embarks on their next odyssey, venturing into uncharted cosmic territories.

While Trekkies across the world will be alarmed to hear that Star Trek is leaving Netflix in some countries including the US, RadioTimes.com can confirm that the legendary sci-fi series is staying put on the streamer for UK fans.

A spokesperson for Netflix has revealed to RadioTimes.com that subscribers in the UK and Ireland will still have access to the original Star Trek show as well as the other catalog series.

Earlier today, a number of publications revealed that a large amount of Star Trek content on Netflix would be leaving the platform in some territories, including Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Voyager and even the 2009 film Star Trek, starring Chris Pine.

The Star Trek shows aren't the only titles leaving Netflix this month for other countries as the streamer is removing 40 shows and films from its collection, including the Austin Powers movies, The Karate Kid franchise and Penny Dreadful.

Star Trek Movies and Shows

Launched on September 8, 1966 — nearly 54 years ago — the NBC-TV series Star Trek was the beginning of a new age of science fiction on television and, eventually, the big screen. The first show to echo the sophistication and vision of sci-fi literature , Star Trek was only a cult hit at the time of its initial run but refused to die even after its cancellation, with the original 79 episodes running for years in syndication.

More than five decades later, Star Trek encompasses eight TV series (a total of 764 episodes and counting) and 13 films, plus countless books, comics, games and more. It’s had its ups and downs, its high points and its misfires, but it remains one of the most beloved and durable franchises in all of pop culture.

Now, thanks to streaming, all those episodes and movies are available to watch any time (we know you diehard Trekkers have the Blu-rays and DVDs, but you don’t have to break those out anymore). Below is a handy guide to where you can stream every iteration of Trek , from The Original Series to the movies to the new Star Trek: Picard . Grab your remote and boldly go…

Star Trek TV

Star Trek: The Original Series

Star Trek: The Original Series (1966-1969)

The one that started it all, the original Star Trek came along at a time when most screen sci-fi (movies and TV) was still just monster movies or kiddie fare ( Lost in Space , anyone?). Gene Roddenberry ’s vision of an intelligent, allegorical sci-fi series, which used actual genre writers for much of its first two seasons, was groundbreaking in ways that reverberate to this day. And its cast, led by William Shatner as Captain Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock and DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy, became iconic.

Star Trek: The Animated Series

Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973-1974)

Using the voices of many of the original cast members and even employing writers from the original series, TAS had a genuine chance to extend the original show with the visual freedom animation offered. But the format turned out to be its enemy, as clunky, cheap animation and frequent reuse of shots gave the show a shoddy, amateurish reputation. Some of the stories are quite good, however.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994)

Set nearly a century after the original series, with Gene Roddenberry mandating that conflict between the crew members be diminished by that point, ST: TNG proved to be enormously popular even with a brand new, unfamiliar crew. It took most of three seasons for the show to find its footing, but Captain Picard (a magnificent Patrick Stewart ) and company went on many captivating and genuinely outstanding adventures of their own.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993-1999)

Many fans consider DS9 the best Trek series ever , and they certainly can make a good argument for it: the first Trek show not set on a starship, but instead on a remote space station, DS9 addressed cultural divides, character conflict, religion and war in a bolder fashion that any Trek entry before it — while also utilizing the kind of serialized storytelling that is now the standard across the medium.

Available in the UK on Netflix UK , Amazon UK* (*purchase only)

Star Trek: Voyager

Star Trek: Voyager (1995-2001)

Voyager found members of a Federation starship and the rebel Maquis stranded together 70,000 years from Earth in the Delta Quadrant, facing a 75-year journey home. Headed by Trek ’s first female captain , Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), Voyager encountered all kinds of interesting new races as well as old enemies the Borg during the long and often compelling journey home.

Star Trek: Enterprise

Star Trek: Enterprise (2001-2005)

The first series to act as a prequel, set a decade before the creation of what would become the United Federation of Planets, Enterprise followed the crew of the first ship to bear that name. Uneven in quality and struggling to find resonant stories, Enterprise was canceled after four seasons and ended an 18-year run for Trek on TV.

Available in the US on Amazon , Netflix , Hulu , CBS All Access

Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery (2017- )

Set 10 years prior to TOS , Discovery ’s troubled birth (it went through numerous delays and several showrunners) led to the most polarizing show in the franchise to date. Focusing for once on a central character other than the captain — mutinous anthropologist Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), who turns out to be the adopted sister of one Mr. Spock — it has often ignored or played fast and loose with Trek continuity while painting Starfleet in a more conspiratorial light. Season 3 will debut in 2020.

Star Trek: Picard

Star Trek: Picard (2020- )

Like Discovery before it, Picard has divided Star Trek fans with its depiction of a Federation in decline, marked by bigotry, deception and treachery. But there is no questioning the powerful presence of Patrick Stewart, playing an older, flawed Picard for the first time in 18 years, and the thrill of seeing old friends like Seven of Nine, Will Riker and Deanna Troi. The show has certainly had its moments ; we’ll see if more are to come in the already-announced season 2 .

Star Trek: 50 Best Episodes

The 15 best worst episodes of star trek: the original series, star trek movies.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

After an aborted attempt at a second TV series ( Star Trek: Phase II ), Paramount Pictures brought Trek to the big screen in a lavish, $40 million epic (the most expensive movie of its time) that reunited the original crew in a 2001 -like encounter with a massive, mysterious space probe. Slow-moving, alternately impressive and shaky visually, ST: TMP nevertheless proved that the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise could hold their own on the big screen — and strangely, the film has actually aged better than most.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

Still considered the finest Trek movie of all , and rightfully so, The Wrath of Khan focused — like the original show — on character and story instead of visual effects and esoteric concepts. Bringing back a deadly enemy from the first season, the generic superman Khan (Ricardo Montalban), the movie was thrilling, dramatic and, with the death of Spock at the finale, incredibly moving.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)

Even though the end of Star Trek II strongly hinted at Spock’s return, it wasn’t a given. But Leonard Nimoy did come back for Star Trek III — as director (and yes, as Spock too in the film’s closing minutes) of this somber and often underrated entry . Captain Kirk loses almost everything — his beloved ship, his commission and his newly reconciled son — to save his friend’s life in a poignant story about friendship and loyalty. And there’s a bad-ass villain too, a Klingon captain played to the hilt by Christopher Lloyd.

Available in the UK on NOW TV , * YouTube , * Amazon UK , * Sky Store (*purchase/rent only)

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

Leonard Nimoy’s second outing as director is both a comedy and an environmentally themed adventure — and it turned out to be one of the biggest hits of the franchise. This light-hearted romp sent Kirk and the gang back to 20 th century San Francisco to rescue a pair of humpback whales, and the fish-out-of-water (pun intended) antics of the crew provide plenty of laughs and a ton of heart.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)

Shatner got behind the camera for this turgid, unfunny mess , which regularly rates near the bottom of any Trekker’s list. The old “alien pretending to be God” trope, a long-lost brother we never knew Spock had and the other cast members acting by and large like buffoons make this perhaps the most embarrassing of the Enterprise ’s big screen voyages. There are a few nice moments — there always are — but this nowhere near first on our revisit list.

Available in the UK on NOW TV , * Amazon UK , *YouTube , * Sky Store (*purchase/rent only)

Star Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country

Star Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country (1991)

The classic Trek cast bounced back from Star Trek V with a final adventure that was also one of their best . A suspenseful, urgent meditation on aging, grievance and the end of the Cold War, Star Trek IV was a remarkable example of how Trek could show us at our finest even while facing down our lingering demons. Plus it ends with both a great space battle and one of the greatest cast send-offs ever (which was emulated by none other than Avengers Endgame ).

Star Trek: Generations

Star Trek: Generations (1994)

What could have been a magnificent passing of the torch from the classic Trek cast to the TNG crew ends up looking and feeling more like a tepid extended TNG episode with weak cameos from Kirk, Scotty (James Doohan) and Chekov (Walter Koenig). Patrick Stewart and his team are all solid, as is villain Malcolm McDowell, and the crashing of the Enterprise is a genuinely gripping setpiece. But the story and motivations are undercooked — as is most of the movie.

Available in the UK on NOW TV , * Amazon UK , * Sky Store , * YouTube (*purchase/rent only)

Star Trek: First Contact

Star Trek: First Contact (1996)

Easily the best of the TNG quartet, First Contact travels back in time to the very start of Earth’s push into space, where the Borg intends to cripple humanity once and for all. The crew of the Enterprise follow them to make sure history isn’t changed, even as Picard confronts his fear and hatred of the Borg . Jonathan Frakes does a nice first-time directing job, balancing the action and character work ably, while Alice Krige steals the show as the sensual Borg Queen.

Star Trek: Insurrection

Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)

Like Generations , the third TNG theatrical outing feels like a mediocre TV segment stretched to feature length; even Frakes’ direction seems uninspired. One difference: with Picard fighting a secret plan (engineered by F. Murray Abraham, above) to uproot the natives of a “fountain of youth” planet, the seeds were planted for later Trek entries that portrayed an increasingly corrupt Federation. Otherwise, this is a forgettable, often cheesy film.

Star Trek: Nemesis

Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

The final big-screen outing for the TNG cast is better than its reputation suggests , as Picard squares off against a renegade Romulan who happens to be his clone. Tom Hardy chews the scenery fabulously as the latter, and the climactic battle between his massive ship and the Enterprise is well handled by director Stuart Baird. There’s also a surprising emotional payoff for Data (Brent Spiner) that ends up being the hook for Star Trek: Picard 18 years later.

Star Trek (2009)

Star Trek (2009)

J.J. Abrams does what many thought couldn’t be done — he reboots Star Trek with a fresh, young cast inhabiting the original roles made iconic by Shatner, Nimoy and their crew. The new cast, led by Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, is the best thing about the film, which also uses a clever plot device to position this timeline just slightly to the side of the original one. The reliance on action over ideas is a bit of a letdown, and unfortunately would carry over to the next two movies.

Available in the UK on Netflix , NOW TV , * Amazon UK , * Sky Store , * YouTube (*purchase/rent only)

Star Trek Into Darkness

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

One of the worst Trek films ever , right down there with The Final Frontier . STID insults both fans and casual viewers with a brain-dead script, frantic action and massive contrivances (such as the sudden ability for someone to beam across the galaxy or the screenwriters’ well-worn “magic blood” gimmick). But its most egregious offense is turning into a half-assed remake of The Wrath of Khan that’s as dumb as it is pointless. This is what happens when people tackle Trek with no understanding of it.

Available in the UK on * Amazon UK , * Sky Store , * YouTube (*purchase/rent only)

Star Trek Beyond

Star Trek Beyond (2016)

Still too reliant on action over depth, and featuring the third revenge-driven storyline in a row, Star Trek Beyond is nevertheless better than its predecessor . It mostly works as a standalone adventure, and once again the Pine/Quinto cast delivers with heart. But even though Beyond does occasionally capture the vibe of classic Trek , there’s a vague sense of desperation at work — like the franchise knows it’s run out of gas (and crashing the Enterprise for the third time in 13 films doesn’t help).

Star Trek Is Spread Out Across 3 Streaming Services Now - Where To Watch

  • Star Trek fans can find every Star Trek show except Star Trek: Prodigy on Paramount+.
  • Paramount+ is the streaming home for all Chris Pine Star Trek movies.
  • The 6 Star Trek: The Original Series movies and 4 Star Trek: The Next Generation movies can be found on Max.

The Star Trek franchise is now spread across three separate streaming services, meaning that fans may wish to have a road map to find where they can watch their favorite Trek shows and movies. For clarity, this split is for Star Trek fans in the US, as the specifics of geo-blocking and streaming rights vary from country to country. However, US fans aren't alone in having multiple ways to access the franchise. For example, Star Trek fans in the UK can still watch all the legacy shows on Netflix until their streaming rights lapse, while Paramount+ has everything bar Star Trek: Prodigy .

Meanwhile, in the United States, Paramount+ holds the majority of Star Trek , with some notable exceptions. Paramount+ controversially removed Star Trek: Prodigy when the show was canceled in 2023. At the start of 2024, the pre-Abrams Star Trek movies have a new streaming home as part of an existing deal with another streamer . With some confusion over which shows and movies are on which streamer, it's a good time to look at the three different streaming homes for Star Trek in 2024.

Only Chris Pines Star Trek Movies Remain On Paramount Plus, Fans Unhappy

Every star trek tv series except star trek: prodigy is on paramount+.

Paramount+ subscribers can watch everything from Star Trek: The Original Series all the way to its 2020s prequel series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It's the perfect way for Star Trek fans to draw links across the franchise, allowing subscribers to travel from the world of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard 's 24th century to the far future of Star Trek: Discovery . The final season of Star Trek: Discovery premieres on Paramount+ in April , as Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the USS Discovery embark on an intergalactic treasure hunt.

Later in 2024, Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 will premiere in late Summer/early Fall , picking up on Lower Decks ' season 4's cliffhanger ending . As Lower Decks is a love letter to the franchise's prolific 1990s period, fans have a chance to prepare for more deep-cut references via revisiting 90s classics like Star Trek: Deep Space Nine on Paramount+. Showrunner Mike McMahan has also expressed his desire to show some love to Scott Bakula's Star Trek: Enterprise in Lower Decks season 5, making it a perfect time to revisit the prequel show on Paramount+.

Fans of animation can also revisit Lower Decks ' predecessor, Star Trek: The Animated Series , which, despite fan arguments over its canonicity, takes pride of place among the other Trek shows on Paramount+. Star Trek 's other animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy isn't on Paramount+ , owing to its cancelation in 2023. The absence of the backdoor Star Trek: Voyager sequel show on Paramount+ does mean that fans of Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and her heroic crew will have to look elsewhere to see how their story continued after returning to the Alpha Quadrant.

J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Movies Are On Paramount+

J.J. Abrams and Chris Pine's Star Trek movies are also available on Paramount+, representing the franchise's Kelvin timeline. The Kelvin timeline trilogy begins with 2009's Star Trek , in which a crew of young cadets become the heroic crew of the USS Enterprise while foiling the plans of Nero (Eric Bana) in an alternate timeline of his own creation. And then, Star Trek into Darkness remakes the beloved Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan with mixed results, casting Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan Noonien-Singh, and introducing Alice Eve as a young Dr. Carol Marcus.

J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies featured Leonard Nimoy's final appearances as Spock , who acted as a mentor to his younger self, played by Zachary Quinto. The third movie, 2016's Star Trek Beyond, paid tribute to the late Leonard Nimoy, and celebrated the franchise's 50th anniversary. With all three of the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movies available on Paramount+, fans have the chance to compare the performances of the exceptional Kelvin timeline cast with their Star Trek: The Original Series predecessors. In doing so, they can see how perfect Abrams' Star Trek movie cast were.

Rebel Moon Proves Star Trek Blew It With J.J. Abrams Movies Best New Character

6 star trek: the original series movies & 4 star trek: the next generation movies are on max.

10 Star Trek movies are currently streaming on Max and are no longer available on Paramount+. All six of the Star Trek: The Original Series movies and the four Star Trek: The Next Generation movies switched to Max on New Year's Day 2024. A similar thing happened before, when Max streamed the 10 TOS and TNG movies on the service between November 2022 and July 2023, suggesting that this is likely a temporary arrangement. Until further notice, however, fans in the US who wish to stream classics like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan or Star Trek: First Contact will have to do so via Max.

It's worth pointing out that distribution and streaming rights are different for movies than they are for TV shows, which could explain the temporary agreement between Paramount+ and Max. Many of the Star Trek movies were big commercial hits that had broad crossover appeal for theater audiences. It makes sense, therefore, for a streamer like Max to pick such broadly enjoyable Trek movies like Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home to feature on the service during the cold and miserable winter months.

Star Trek: Prodigy is streaming on Netflix

After being canceled by Paramount+, Star Trek: Prodigy spent the second half of 2023 looking for a new streaming home. Prodigy 's cancelation was particularly surprising because a second season was already well into development at the time that the axe fell. The prospect of 20 brand-new episodes of a Star Trek show must have sweetened the deal for Netflix, who bought the streaming rights for Star Trek: Prodigy seasons 1 and 2. Prodigy premiered on Netflix on Christmas Day 2023 , and all 20 episodes of season 1 are available to stream on the service.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 will premiere later in 2024, although it's unclear if it will have a weekly release schedule or be dropped on Netflix in one go. Prodigy season 2 is one of the big Star Trek highlights of 2024 so it does feel odd that it will be taking place on Netflix, rather than on Paramount+. Regardless, the wealth of Star Trek shows and movies available to stream across multiple platforms highlights the broad appeal of the franchise to viewers new and old.

Every Star Trek show except Star Trek: Prodigy is now streaming on Paramount+.

Every Chris Pine Star Trek movie is streaming now on Paramount+.

The 6 TOS and 4 TNG movies are streaming now on Max.

All episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 are streaming now on Netflix.

Why I'm Thrilled About Unsolved Mysteries Volume 4 Coming To Netflix In 2024

Cue that creepy music.

Unsolved Mysteries show logo

If we're talking about the best true crime shows you can stream , Unsolved Mysteries has to be at the top of the list. Thankfully, the wait for a new season is over, and Netflix has confirmed that Volume 4 of the beloved series will make its grand return alongside many other shows available with a Netflix subscription on the 2024 TV schedule . Out of the many on the way, this is the one I'm most excited about for more reasons than one.

Anyone amazed that I'd put this show higher on my list than even some scripted shows must not be watching the latest Netflix series. Thankfully, it's never too late to jump in and develop a love for the show for the same reasons I dive into below.

The Chance Of Potentially Solving A Murder While Watching Is So Thrilling

The main thrill of watching Unsolved Mysteries is in the title. These are mysteries that still need answers, and throughout the series' long history, the added exposure has yielded results. A mystery was solved not long after the very first episode of the original series, and 260 cases have been solved since. Just as recently as last year, USA Today reported Kayla Unbehaun was returned home after a viewer recognized her in one of the Netflix episodes. For those who dream of participating in a true crime mystery and playing a part in the case, this show is your opportunity.

I Much Prefer A Variety Of Mysteries To One Long Story

While I can appreciate the true crime docuseries that deep dive into high-profile cases, sometimes my attention span can only handle so much. While I'd be interested in watching a ten-episode series about Gypsy Rose detailing why no one ever removed her from her mother's care , for example, most of the time I'd rather watch a one-off overview of a mystery in under an hour. If there's more I want to learn, I can search for the details online. If not, I can dive right into the next episode with a brand-new mystery.

The Show Prioritizes Finding Lesser-Known Cases To Cover

I think it's a general trend to jump on the hot new thing, especially when it comes to true crime drama. Networks will churn out several specials and documentaries on the same big murder/kidnapping/homicide case, and even celebrities like Dog The Bounty Hunter can't resist attaching themselves to major cases like Gabby Petito.

Unsolved Mysteries confirmed to CinemaBlend that they went into smaller towns as a way of generating leads for authorities who lacked any clear direction. As someone who knows there are many unsolved crimes in the United States, I appreciate that there's a show looking to spotlight communities that wouldn't receive attention otherwise. This reason, perhaps above all else, is why I continue to stream the Netflix reboot after watching the original in my younger years.

Unfortunately, we have no release date for the upcoming Unsolved Mysteries episodes. That said, there's presumably time to watch the Netflix series for those who haven't checked it out and need something else to stream in addition to the exciting shows arriving this year.
