Postal Service’s platinum-selling album, Give Up, was released in February 2003. The record is the sole studio album of the supergroup, and it quickly became a gem among indie rock fans. Give Up topped Billboard’s Dance chart and peaked at number 3 on the Top Independent Albums chart. The unprecedented record features the gold-certified single “Such Great Heights” and “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight.” Postal Service, which has been active since 2001, comprises Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard. The singer-songwriter is joined by members producer Jimmy Tamborello and former lead singer for Rilo Kiley, Jenny Lewis.

The gold-selling record was a concept album that explored themes of long-distance romance. The album, which spawned the singles “The New Year,” “The Sound of Settling,” and “Title and Registration,” received wide critical acclaim and peaked at number 8 on the Top Independent Albums chart. “I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003,” Gibbard said in a statement. “The Postal Service record came out; Transatlanticism came out. These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year.” See Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie take over Meadow Brook Amphitheatre on Sunday, 17th September 2023! Indie rock titans The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie have announced plans for a landmark 20 th anniversary co-headline North American tour. The extraordinary live run will see both iconic groups performing their seminal 2003 albums in full – The Postal Service’s RIAA Platinum-certified Give Up and Death Cab for Cutie’s RIAA Gold-certified breakthrough fourth studio LP Transatlanticism – two classics released within a mere eight months of one another that year. The tour includes a stop at Meadow Brook Amphitheatre on the campus of Oakland University on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. Oakland University Credit Union is the exclusive presenting partner of Meadow Brook Amphitheatre.

Benjamin Gibbard, the co-founder of both bands, will pull double duty throughout the tour, performing with The Postal Service – comprised of Gibbard, Jimmy Tamborello, and Jenny Lewis – as well as with Death Cab for Cutie (alongside Nick Harmer, Dave Depper, Zac Rae, and Jason McGerr).

“I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003. The Postal Service record came out, Transatlanticism came out. These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year.” – Gibbard

The tour was announced this morning via an exclusive trailer on the band’s socials (watch HERE ).

The sure to be highly-anticipated run will kick off September 8, 2023 at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, ME and continue through mid-October, with highlights including shows at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden, Berkeley, CA’s Greek Theatre, and Los Angeles, CA’s Hollywood Bowl.

The upcoming tour will mark the first live performances from The Postal Service in over a decade, following 2013’s hugely successful 10-year anniversary reunion tour for Give Up – an album which still stands today as Sub Pop’s second highest-selling album in the label’s history, second only to Nirvana’s Bleach. The reunion tour was captured for posterity on a live concert film, Everything Will Change , released in 2014 and subsequently on a live audio album released in 2020 to digital streaming platforms.

Also in 2020, the trio joined forces to support HeadCount’s “Make Your Vote Count” campaign via a star-studded video of “ Zoom Auditions ” for new band members which featured appearances from fans including Anne Hathaway, Kenny G, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Slash, Huey Lewis, Caroline Polachek, Michelle Zauner, Big Freedia, and J Mascis, to name a few.

Meanwhile, 8x GRAMMY® Award-nominees Death Cab for Cutie are currently celebrating the release of their critically acclaimed 10 th studio album, Asphalt Meadows . Produced by GRAMMY® Award-winner John Congleton (St. Vincent, Sharon Van Etten, Wallows), the new LP includes the explosive “ Roman Candles ” and chart-topping “ Here to Forever ,” the latter of which reached #1 at Alternative radio in October, after spending a record-setting nine weeks atop the AAA airplay chart this summer. The album received tremendous praise from outlets including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Vulture, SPIN, Stereogum, and Pitchfork, who lauded the record as “a late career masterwork… a restoration of their creative momentum when a mere ‘return to form’ would have sufficed.”

Ahead of the dates with The Postal Service, Death Cab for Cutie will continue their Asphalt Meadows world tour in January 2023, traversing North America, Europe, and the UK through June, with support from Momma, Slow Pulp, and Lomelda on select dates. This follows their much-celebrated headline tour this past Fall at venues including Forest Hills (NYC) and The Greek Theatre (LA). Formed in Bellingham, WA in 1997, Death Cab for Cutie immediately entered the ranks of the era’s most definitive bands, thanks in large part to the remarkable power of co-founder, vocalist, guitarist, and lead songwriter Ben Gibbard’s complex, often bittersweet songcraft. The band made their worldwide popular breakthrough with 2003’s RIAA gold certified Transatlanticism, later named by NPR as one of “The Decade’s 50 Most Important Recordings.” Fueled by critical acclaim, an array of high-profile soundtrack placements, and such hit singles as “The Sound of Settling” and “Title and Registration,” the album debuted among the upper half of the Billboard 200 – Death Cab for Cutie’s first ever entry on the overall chart. A 10 th anniversary edition of Transatlanticism containing previously unheard demos and outtakes arrived in 2013, prompting NPR to write, “For all its ubiquity and imitators, Transatlanticism holds up as an exquisitely produced, largely flawless record in which every song is bound to serve as someone’s favorite.”

2003 also saw Gibbard and Los Angeles, CA-based multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel, Figurine) unite as The Postal Service, a long distance collaboration named for their working method of exchanging tracks via the US Mail. The duo – joined by a number of friends including singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis – proved a phenomenon with the February 2003 release of their one and only studio LP, Give Up, earning worldwide applause and eventual RIAA platinum certification thanks to infectious electro-pop smashes like “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” (a top 3 sensation on Billboard’s “Hot Dance Singles” chart), “We Will Become Silhouettes (which reached the top 3 on the Canadian Singles Chart), and of course, the magical RIAA gold certified “Such Great Heights.” The album’s stature continued to grow in the years following its original release, ultimately spending 19 non-consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s “Top Electronic Albums” chart. In 2013, The Postal Service reunited to mark the 10 th anniversary of Give Up with their biggest headline tour ever, along with top-billed performances at such international festivals as Coachella, Primavera Sound, Lollapalooza, and Sasquatch. In addition, a commemorative 10 th anniversary edition of Give Up saw the singular collection expanded with 15 bonus tracks, including two brand new songs, “A Tattered Line of String” and “Turn Around.”

The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie Announce 2023 Tour

Benjamin Gibbard Benjamin Gibbard

The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie have announced a co-headlining tour taking place next fall. The 2023 dates will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their respective 2003 records: Give Up and Transatlanticism . Bandleader Benjamin Gibbard will pull double-duty each night of the tour, as his bands perform the albums front-to-back. The trek also marks the first live performances from the Postal Service in a decade. Find the full tour schedule below and scroll down for a trailer video.

“I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003,” Gibbard said in a press release. “The Postal Service record came out; Transatlanticism came out. These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year.”

Give Up is the most recent studio album from the Postal Service, although the group did issue a soundtrack to the 2014 concert film, Everything Will Change , back in 2020. Death Cab for Cutie shared their latest LP, Asphalt Meadows , earlier this year. They are currently on tour behind the release.

Housed in a 1932 Works Progress Administration post office building, this museum building is an architectural gem. Collecting for this museum began in 1987, and has grown into the second largest Postal Service Museum in the country.

He’s also a man of postcards, even those made of leather and tree bark, and a man of stamps and of letter boxes that are made of metal and, yes, glass.

And he’s a man who knows and embraces and wants to share the history of the American postal system that at one time was the lifeline of a growing and endlessly curious country.

“This is my passion,” he said.

Indeed, Mike Schragg, the postmaster of the Marshall Post Office from 1979 to 2002, has the postal service in his blood and for nearly 20 years has also been the curator of the United States Postal Service Museum in the basement of the Marshall Post Office.

WXYZ - Detroit, Michigan

A look inside metro Detroit's largest USPS facility during holiday shipping rush

postal service tour michigan

PONTIAC, Mich. (WXYZ) — Inside metro Detroit's largest United States Postal Service facility, everywhere you look, there’s work nonstop. Conveyor belts above, sorting machines below, thousands of packages and millions of letters move through the Michigan Metroplex every day.

Each item has a special meaning to someone.

“We know how important these gifts are. These important documents, these different things people order for their family, for their loved ones, for themselves,” said Christopher Oxie, senior manager of Processing Support at the Michigan Metroplex.

The Metroplex in Pontiac is a 1-million-square-foot facility and is one of the largest USPS facilities in the country. It's running at full capacity 24/7 with less than two weeks until Christmas.

“We might process, let's say between 60,000 and 100,000 (packages) on a given day," Oxie said. "These days, were doing between 200,000 to 270,000 every day in this building alone.”

That huge increase is expected every December, with more than half a million packages per day being sorted and shipping in metro Detroit.

Whether it’s end-of-year business mail or Christmas letters, the Metroplex handles more mail than any other facility in the country, going from roughly 3 million letters a day normally to about 5 million per day during December, not to mention 271,000 packages.

“December is the highest package volume month of the year for us by far," Oxie said. "With the new ground advantage we put in place this year, it’s been tremendous.”

Thanks in part to new technology, Oxie says the facility can handle the extra load as he and about 1,500 employees work collectively around the clock to make sure Christmas in metro Detroit runs as smoothly as it can.

“They (customers) entrusted us to get that mail to them, those packages to them as soon as we can," Oxie said. "We strive every day to get everything delivered on time.”

The USPS deadlines for Christmas delivery are:

  • USPS Ground Advantage: Dec. 16
  • First-Class Mail, including greeting cards: Dec. 16
  • Priority Mail: Dec. 18
  • Priority Mail Express: Dec. 20

Former postal worker gets probation for stealing rebate cards in Lansing

LANSING, Mich. — A former U.S. Postal Service worker was sentenced to two years of probation for theft of mail, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Mark Totten announced Monday.

In 2022, Jacqueline M. Garrow, 50, of Lansing, redeemed three Menard's rebate cards that were mailed to recipients with addresses along her delivery route, Totten said.

  • Local : Smoker waste sparks fire at Battle Creek's One Nation Tap and Table

A customer had complained that he never received his expected Menard's rebate card in the mail, leading authorities to investigate further.

Video footage from the Menard's Lansing South store showed Garrow redeeming two additional rebate cards, authorities said.

"Offenses like this undermine public confidence in the U.S. Postal System,” Totten said. “The felony conviction in this case sends a strong deterrent message to anyone who may unlawfully interfere with the mail system."

  • State : Body of 31-year-old man recovered after drowning at Hart Lake

Because Garrow immediately confessed, Totten said officials granted her request for a probationary sentence.

"General deterrence is important because people have a right to expect their mail will get where they send it without any tampering," U.S. District Judge Paul L. Maloney said. "The loss of her job has already brought home to Ms. Garrow the seriousness of her offense."

Postal Customer Councils are local organizations that help foster a close working relationship between USPS and commercial mailers with the goal of sharing information about postal products, programs, and services through an educational and collaborative environment.

The United States Postal Service is an independent federal establishment, mandated to be self-financing and to serve every American community through the affordable, reliable and secure delivery of mail and packages to 167 million addresses six and often seven days a week. Overseen by a bipartisan Board of Governors, the Postal Service is implementing a 10-year transformation plan, Delivering for America , to modernize the postal network, restore long-term financial sustainability, dramatically improve service across all mail and shipping categories, and maintain the organization as one of America’s most valued and trusted brands.

The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
