Queens really has some great views of the New York Skyline. During one of our stays in New York City, we rented an apartment in Queens and we were absolutely blown away with the Manhattan skyline views. Some of the best places to see the skyline from Queens are from Gantry Plaza State Park.

We had a waterfront apartment in Queens for this view, but there are plenty of places to see New York from Queens. The A+ Roof Bar at the Parc Hotel in Flushing Queens is another great rooftop bar for views of New York.

20. Roosevelt Island Tram

Looking for something unique to do in New York, hop on the Roosevelt Island Tram for views of the Manhattan Skyline and the East River. the Roosevelt Island Tram is part of the Metro system, so you can get on it with your metro car and see a different side of Manhattan. best views of manhattan skyline columbus circle

It took us about half a dozen times to get up to the Time Warner Building on Columbus Circle. Lucky for us we were speaking at a conference and had the opportunity to go into the Mandarin Hotel. and found out about it. What makes this one of the best views in New York is the fact that it shows Central Park contrasting with the skyscrapers in the distance.

27. The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met)

best views of new york from the met

Our favorite museum in New York is the Met and after perusing all the amazing displays, make your way to the Cantor Roof Garden Bar on the rooftop of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. From here you’ll get views of the Manhattan skyline and Central Park. Free entry with your New York Pass

28. New York Rooftop Bars

best views of new york city rooftop bars

Speaking of Rooftop Bars, New York has some of the best nightlife in the world and when the weather is warm, get outdoors to take in the city lights. We’ve been lucky enough to visit New York for conferences and speaking engagements and they always love to Wine and Dine us at rooftop bars. We’ve had some incredible views while sipping our cocktails.

29 – 31: Some favorite New York City Rooftop Bars Are:

  • Le Bain & The Rooftop at the Standard High Line – Busy bar with great views of the Hudson River on the 18th floor.
  • The Press Lounge – This is New York’s Premier Rooftop Lounge on the 16th floor with views of the Manhattan skyline and Hudson River year-round.
  • Reservations are Recommended for the rooftop bars as they fill up quickly.

32. Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn

greenwood cemetery new york views of manhattan skyline

Greenwood Cemetery was founded in 1838 and covers 478 acres, making it one of the largest cemeteries in New York City.

The cemetery is known for its magnificent views of Manhattan, which can be seen from various vantage points throughout the grounds. Visitors can climb to the highest points of the cemetery to get a panoramic view of the city skyline.

Besides its stunning views, Green-Wood Cemetery is also renowned for its collection of historic monuments and mausoleums. Similar to Pere Lachaise in Paris, France, the cemetery is the final resting place of many famous people, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Leonard Bernstein, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and Susan Smith McKinney Steward, the first African American female doctor in New York State.

And these are the best views of New York City and Manhattan that we’ve seen. Where is your favourite NYC rooftop bar or viewpoint? This is one beautiful city and there are NYC views from everywhere. One of our favorite views was simply from a friend’s balcony in Manhattan. The iconic views are endless in the city that never sleeps.

Valentino Pier

This park in Red Hook is one of the best places to catch an NYC sunset. Jutting out into the East River, you can spy the Statue of Liberty, Governor’s Island, Manhattan’s skyline, Staten Island, and the New York Harbor. It gets very busy on nice days, so go early to snag a spot.

11.  Brooklyn Bridge

  • Historic buildings and sites

Brooklyn Bridge

The 19th-century feat of engineering is itself a sight to behold. Appreciate the beautiful craftsmanship of the suspension bridge and expansive views of Manhattan, Brooklyn and the harbor along the landmark’s walkway. 12.  Gantry Plaza State Park

  • Long Island City

Gantry Plaza State Park

The 12-acres of waterside greenery, playgrounds and courts in this Long Island City park are made all the more glorious by the East River and the famous skyscrapers rising west of the gentle waves. Down refreshing cocktails as you sip up the glory of Central Park and the Upper East Side below.

18.  Wave Hill

This city-owned garden in the Riverdale section of the Bronx retains the same horticultural traditions as when it was a private estate. Go for sunset and you won’t be disappointed by the gorgeous silhouette of the city and the Triboro and Hellsgate bridges.

20.  Belvedere Castle

Belvedere Castle

Tucked away in Central Park this whimsical Victorian Folly—a beautiful structure without a true purpose—was designed by Calvert Vaux, one of the park’s architects, in 1865. From its two balconies you’ll have the best views of the park’s most popular spots including the Delacorte Theater, the Great Lawn, Turtle Pond and the Ramble. For a closer look at Mother Nature’s handiwork, peer into the telescopes and microscopes provided by the Henry Luce Nature Observatory or borrow a pair of binoculars to start looking for birds and critters.

8 Viewing Spots for the Best Skyline View of NYC

Downtown Manhattan skyline

The New York City skyline is one of the most recognizable in the world, and has featured in countless songs, movies, and photographs. It towers over the surrounding landscape with its majestic presence, the skyscrapers and landmarks making a pretty picture along the horizon.  Within New York City, Manhattan as an island offers the best skyline views, which are from the other side of the waters that surround it, which would be from Queens, Brooklyn and even New Jersey.

The New York City skyline is as striking during the day as it is at night, so it is a must do any which way you can fit it into your schedule.

Lets take a closer look at 8 of the best viewing spots to experience the New York skyline, the most convenient ways to get there via public transportation, some notable buildings that paint the New York skyline with their unique designs, and some pictures of the Manhattan skyline from over the years.

Midtown Manhattan Skyline

Table of Contents

8 best places to see the new york city skyline view.

Manhattan offers a number of vantage points to soak in the New York City Skyline View. Here are some of my favorites.

1. Observation Decks in Manhattan

Manhattan , also called the Big Apple , offers a lot of different options for observation decks to experience the New York City skyline view. The one advantage of experiencing the New York City skyline is that you can do it from within Manhattan, so you do not need to venture off the island for the view. The downside of the observation decks is that you can’t see the building you are in, which is likely to be a significant landmark in the skyline, and the cost of tickets which can add up, especially if you are a family. Also, if you or someone in your group does not like heights, you can skip ahead to the other options in this section as most can be experienced from the ground level from public parks.

Downtown Manhattan from an Observation Deck

The main observation decks in Manhattan are –

Top of the Rock Observation Deck.

Located in the Rockefeller Center , the Top of the Rock offers an unrivaled, unobstructed view of Manhattan’s skyline. This three-tiered observation deck allows visitors to see the Empire State Building, One World Trade Center, and the Central Park all in one breathtaking 360-degree view.

An iconic symbol of New York, the Empire State Building provides visitors with two observation decks—one on the 86th floor and another on the 102nd floor, and you can see up to 5 states on a clear day from it.

One World Observatory

Located in the Freedom Tower, or the World Trade Center , it takes 47 seconds to get to this observatory which is located on the 100th, 101st and 102nd floors to get a fabulous 360 degree view of the City and the water that surrounds it.

Located on the 100th Floor in Hudson Yards, the Edge is the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere.  It has amazing views of Manhattan, and even a glass floor section that you can walk across.

The Edge Observation Deck

Summit One Vanderbilt

Located right next to Grand Central Station, Summit One Vanderbilt is located on the 91st through 93rd Floor of One Vanderbilt, and offers a unique art experience built into the observation deck, as well as glass skyboxes and an all glass elevator as add on options.

2. Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City, Queens

Gantry Plaza State Park is located in Long Island City in Queens, which is right across the East River. This is very easy to access by subway, and is located on the first stop in Queens – Vernon Jackson Boulevard – when you leave Manhattan on the 7 subway train. It provides sweeping views of the midtown Manhattan skyline, and is a great place to catch the 4th of July fireworks.

Midtown Manhattan from Gantry Plaza State Park

Gantry Plaza State Park is a 12 acre park that used to once be gantries that were used to load and unload barges and rail car floats, and is home to the giant Pepsi Cola sign that has been designated a landmark.

3. Brooklyn Bridge Park, Brooklyn

Brooklyn Bridge Park spans 1.3 miles of Brooklyn’s waterfront in DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), and has amazing views of Brooklyn Bridge, which it is located under, and of the downtown Manhattan skyline.

Downtown Manhattan Skyline from the Brooklyn Bridge Park

Brooklyn Bridge Park is home to Jane’s Carousel, as well as Public Art exhibits, and has the Time Out food market that offers a wide array of food options to make a day – or night – visit to catch the skyline from here.

There are a number of subway lines that you can take to Brooklyn Bridge Park depending on where you are traveling from, including A, C, F, 2 and 3 trains.

4. Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Williamsburg in Brooklyn has a lot of options to view the New York City skyline, which include waterfront parks, as well as hotels with rooftop lounges that offer a sweeping view of downtown and midtown Manhattan.

The parks, which have been developed in recent years and offer a great place to spend time, include Domino Park and Bushwick Inlet Park. The Bushwick Inlet Park also has a Smorgasburg, which is a food market in the summer with some of the best food options that New York has to offer, making for an amazing visit while taking in the Manhattan skyline.

New York Skyline from Williamsburg

Williamsburg Hotels, such as the Wythe and William Vale, have made the most of the Manhattan skyline with restaurants and rooftop bars that offer unparalleled views if you prefer to soak in the view in the comfort of air-conditioning, especially in the summer.

The L subway train is usually the most convenient option to travel to Williamsburg, though it is common to have service changes over the weekend on this line.

5. Jersey City, New Jersey

Jersey City is on the other side of the Hudson River, and offers sweeping views of the New York City skyline. This tends to be off the beaten track for visitors as you are going to a different state, though it is easy enough to do if you happen to be at the World Trade Center as you can see the skyline from Exchange Place, which is the first stop on the PATH train from there.  The waterfront is very well developed, and you can take a long walk while soaking in the Manhattan skyline from the other side of the Hudson River.

Public transport options include the ferry or the PATH train to get here from Manhattan.

6. Staten Island Ferry

The Staten Island Ferry has an amazing view of the lower Manhattan skyline, and actually crosses the Statue of Liberty on its way, making for an amazing experience from the water which is special.

Statue of Liberty at Sundown from a Ferry

Best of all, the Staten Island Ferry is absolutely free, making it a must do whether or not you are on a budget on your trip to NYC.

7. New York City Ferry Tour

One of the best ways to experience the Manhattan skyline is from the water that surrounds the island. Luckily, there are many different options of ferry tours that are offered from different parts of Manhattan by day and by night to experience the magic of the New York City skyline from the water.

8. New York Skyline From Up In The Air

One of the best ways to get a birds eye view of the New York skyline is if you are lucky enough to catch it when you are landing or taking off from one of the three NYC airports. The other option, which can be pricey, is to take a helicopter tour that flies around Manhattan, which gives you great perspective of this concrete jungle that is also the crossroads of the world.

Notable Buildings on the NYC Skyline:

The NYC skyline boasts a large number of remarkable buildings, but some of the most notable ones you can spot include:

The Empire State Building , named after the nickname for New York, which is Empire State, is a defining feature of the NYC skyline.  It is an 102-story Art Deco skyscraper that was the world’s tallest building for 40 years from 1931 – 1971, and was recently  called the most famous building in the world based on an analysis of millions of photographs. It is especially recognizable at night for the different colors of its Tower Lights that celebrate, acknowledge and remember notable events, holidays and people.

Empire State Building

One World Trade Center

One World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower, stands as a powerful testament to the resilience of New York City after the 9/11 attacks. It is a defining landmark of the NYC skyline in more ways than one, and its towering presence is visible as a part of the Downtown Manhattan skyline by day and by night.

World Trade Center behind the Brookyn Bridge from the Brooklyn Bridge Park

Chrysler Building

Chrysler Building is an Art Deco masterpiece that is an elegant presence in the Manhattan skyline with its distinctive spire and terraced crown. It shines bright on 42nd Street, holding its own in the backdrop of the Empire State Building which is a few streets away from it.

Chrysler Building

One Vanderbilt

One Vanderbilt is a more recent addition to the New York skyline on 42nd Street, and is very recognizable by its colored lights, especially at night.

One Vanderbilt lit up in blue in the NYC Skyline from Long Island City

New York Skyline at Night

Experiencing the New York City skyline at night is a wondrous thing, and it is definitely worth finding a way to fit this into your schedule.

One of the best ways to experience the New York skyline by night is to actually plan a place where you can take the skyline in by evening, sunset, and then by night as all three are amazing to see.   The Obervation Decks are all open late if you plan to visit one for the view of the New York City skyline at night.

It is important to keep in mind that the sunset time varies significantly based on the season, so this would be relative to the length of the day when you are visiting.

New York Skyline by Night

Closing Thoughts on the New York City Skyline

The NYC skyline is more than just a collection of buildings as it represents the spirit and vibrancy of the city that never sleeps, and the people that make it so.  There are many options for viewing the skyline, both from within observation decks in Manhattan, or from outside Manhattan where you can soak in the entirety of the Big Apple, and public transportation makes it easy to get to any of these locations. Many of these views are available for the cost of a subway ride to get there, and are definitely recommended on a visit to New York, by day, dusk, and by night.

best views of New York City

Like moths to a flame, millions of people visit NYC every year for a chance to see the epic New York City skyline for themselves. From the soaring heights of observation decks to the picturesque views of skyscrapers in Central Park, there’s no shortage of great viewpoints worth exploring.

So, whether you’re a seasoned New Yorker or a first-time visitor, allow me to share the best views of New York City (free and paid options) based on first time experience. I hope you enjoy!

Visiting New York City? If you haven’t decided where to stay (yet) check out our helpful guide on Where to Stay in New York City (The 10 Best Neighborhoods & 3 to Avoid) . Don’t have time? Here’s my favorite hotel in NYC, hands down.

DUMBO, Best views of New York City

Free NYC Viewpoints

Let’s kick off our list of the best free views of the New York City skyline with a classic spot you absolutely can’t miss, the Time Out Market in DUMBO. Seeing the Manhattan skyline from Brooklyn is hard to beat, and nothing tops the views from the rooftop at the Time Out Market.

The market is a collection of some of the best restaurants in the city, and the roof top terrace is open to the public (there’s also a bar!). You can’t do much better for an impromptu observation deck in NYC. There’s a small outdoor seating area, but unless it’s freezing cold or blistering hot it’ll likely be full.

The Brooklyn Bridge takes center stage as the jaw-dropping NYC skyline looms in the background. This is my go-to spot for visitors that ask where to see the best views of New York City for free, it doesn’t get better than this. You’d normally have to make reservations a month in advance and slip the host a crisp $20 bill for views like this.

Best NYC parks for picnics

The irresistible view of the Brooklyn Bridge takes center stage as happy couples pepper the lawn with picnic blankets and pizza boxes in tow. The 80-acre park hosts outdoor movies during the summer months, which takes date night to a whole new level.

Watching a movie while sneaking peaks at one of the best views of New York City, it’s an unforgettable experience to be sure. Afterwards, stroll the Brooklyn Promenade at night, it’s one of the most romantic things to do in NYC .

skyline nyc travel

This is a lesser-known spot but the view of New York from the Manhattan Bridge shouldn’t be missed. You’ll get two very interesting viewpoints — a stunning view over Chinatown (pictured above) and the Brooklyn Bridge as you approach DUMBO featured below.

This is one of my personal favorite views of NYC because it’s seldom crowded (thanks to the noisy subway that runs every few minutes). But I’ll be honest, I also love this viewpoint for sentimental reasons.

Living in NYC was a longtime dream of mine, as motivation, I would often replace my screensaver with photos of NYC. This iconic shot of Manhattan’s skyline was my inspiration for months before I finally took the leap of faith and moved to NYC. To this day, this exact view of New York City is still one of my favorites, even if for sentimental reasons. 😉

Central Park Summer 2022

There’s so much to love about Central Park, not least the breathtaking views of skyscrapers poking through the trees. My favorite viewpoints in Central Park are from Sheep Meadow, Wollman Rink, and the Bow Bridge.

best things to do in the Upper West Side, Columbus Circle

While exploring Central Park, don’t miss a quick trip to the Time Warner Building near Columbus Circle. Located at the southwest end of the park, there’s a Whole Foods in the mall, making it a great stop for water and snacks.

Head to the fourth floor for one of the best free views of New York City. This area is especially lovely in the fall when the contrast between the fall foliage and gray buildings puts the height of the city’s skyscrapers into perspective.

NYC Summer

Governors Island is a peaceful island, just a short ferry ride from Manhattan that offers a unique and breathtaking view of the New York City’s skyline. The best part? The ferry to Governors Island is free Saturdays & Sundays before noon ( ferry info here ).

You can wander around the island while soaking in the stunning backdrop of the Financial District and Statue of Liberty. The island is one massive park, we saw folks picnicking, napping and riding bikes along the esplanade (there’s Citi Bike stations on the island).

There’s also a few food trucks and a great oyster bar (called Island Oyster) for light bites and drinks. It’s a very relaxing place to hang out with friends for a few hours. Whatever you do, don’t miss the cool rock outcropping to get the best views of NYC (that’s where I got the photo).

Best views in NYC

The High Line is one of the more unique parks in New York City. Before the High Line was even conceived, this area was used as an elevated rail-line for freight trains delivering cargo into the city. The the demand for this service became moot with the rise of trucking and the railroad track was abandoned for ages, until Mayor Bloomberg approved a plan to transform it into a city park.

The High Line was opened in 2009 and became an instant success. The elevated promenade stretches for 1.5 miles and receives an average 8 million visitors annually. The best time to visit the High Line is either spring or summer when the plants are in bloom. Regardless of when you visit, you’ll see beautiful murals, unique art and rotating sculptures.

The people-watching opportunities are endless! Plus, the views of NYC from this vantage point are some of the most interesting in the city. You’ll see the Empire State Building and get great views of the Hudson River.

Little Island, NYC Best Parks

Pier 57 is a part of a slew of new attractions bringing foot traffic to the Hudson Yards neighborhood. Neighbors with Little Island, it’s home to a multi-use building that includes a food-hall, green spaces and a stunning viewpoint of New York City.

Access is free and it doesn’t close until 1AM, which means you’ll be able to get the best views of NYC at night for free. From Pier 57’s viewpoint you can see the Edge, Empire State Building and the One World Trade Center in the Financial District.

The sweeping vistas are priceless (which is great because again, it’s free ). You can enjoy a budget-friendly date at Pier 57. Or simply find reprieve in the fact it’s still largely void of locals because it’s still so new (opened in 2022).

Manhattanhenge crowds

We’ve visited the Tudor City Bridge several times and usually get the bridge to ourselves, even during sunset which shows just how underrated this NYC viewpoint is. However, there’s a well-known annual phenomenon called Manhattanhenge, which is when the sun aligns perfectly with east-to-west streets during sunset.

As you can imagine, the bridge swells with photographers during this time because this is easily the best view of NYC during Manhattanhenge. The Chrysler Building steals the show and the fast moving cars below make this a great spot to practice your photography skills, but damn — you’ll need to arrive 2 hours before sunset to get a good spot.

best free views of New York City

As you may know, the Staten Island Ferry is a great way to see the Statue of Liberty up close for free. The ferry departs from lower Manhattan and offers striking views of New York, so you’ll want to be as close to the side of the ferry as possible.

The view of the Statue of Liberty is epic (hell, it made me emotional the first time I saw it). I’m so glad NYC has a free ferry that passes Lady Liberty because tickets to Ellis Island were sold out when my in-laws were in town.

skyline nyc travel

Averaging 22 million visitors a year (70,000 per day), the Staten Island Ferry is crowded most of the time. The majority of folks hop on for the views of the Statue of Liberty before heading back to Manhattan, expect the entire trip to take one hour. Just know that you must disembark the ferry when it reaches Staten Island and queue up board again (about 90% of folks will be doing the same!).

You may have heard that Roosevelt Island is one of the best spots to see cherry blossom in NYC . But did you know that it also offers one of the best views of New York City?

The adventure starts with a tram ride over the East River (Tap-to-Pay and MetroCards accepted). The departs from the Upper East Side every 15 minutes and drops you off on Roosevelt Island. Enjoy the great NYC views from the tram, but brace yourself — it gets even better.

When you get off the tram head towards the promenade that hugs the East River, which swells with visitors eager to see the breathtaking cherry blossoms in spring. Roosevelt Island is also popular during the warm summer months and there’s a great rooftop bar on the island called Panorama Room.

Best New York City Viewpoints (Payment Required)

New York City is no stranger to rooftop bar. Cocktails come at a premium though, you’re paying for the views just as much as the libation. We did the heavy lifting for you, here’s a roundup of the best rooftop bars in Brooklyn .

skyline nyc travel

You’ll find the Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in Central Park along Fifth Avenue (between East 80th and 84th Streets). Its location means you get to look over the lush canopy of Central Park and beyond, towards Billionaires’ Row and Midtown.

The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden is home to a bar and additional art installations most visitors miss. The best piece of art doesn’t belong to the museum though – it’s the skyline view. Impressive, right?

You’ll need to purchase a ticket into the museum to have access to the rooftop, but trust me, the price of admission is well worth it. With more than 2 million pieces of art spanning 5,000+ years, the Met is the largest museum in the country and one of the best museum in New York City .

The Observation Decks in New York City (Ranked)

Empire State Building Views from Top of the Rock NYC

If you’re looking for the absolute best viewpoints in New York City, it’s hard to beat the Top of the Rock NYC Observation Deck. I’ve visited all of the observation decks in NYC and consider Top of the Rock the cream of the crop.

The reason I like this New York City viewpoint so much is because the large glass panels offer unobstructed views the NYC skyline, unlike some of the other observation decks that use fencing. It makes sense to use clear glass panels here because the sweeping view of Central Park is downright breathtaking and obstructing that view would be a crime!

From Top of Rock you’ll see the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, Flatiron Building and the One World Trade Center. There’s a reason this New York City viewpoint attracts people in hoards. It’s definitely worth a visit!

Tip: Visit the Rainbow Room, a bar on the 65th floor that doesn’t have an admission fee but does have an order minimum of $65 (about 2-3 drinks).

Summit One Vanderbilt

General Admission to Summit One Vanderbilt starts at $42 making it the second most-expensive observation deck in NYC. However, the views of NYC from this observation deck are easily worth the price!

This ticket provides access to the observation deck, Après (restaurant) and the Levitating experiences (glass boxes you can step into, hanging 1,100 feet out of the side of the building). You can also purchase the Summit Signature Experience, which provides everything previously mentioned and one free signature drink at Après.

For a more comprehensive review of NYC’s observation decks (including the pros and cons of each), read: All 5 NYC Observation Decks (Ranked by Locals)

Views of NYC from the Edge in NYC

Edge’s claim to fame is that it’s the highest outdoor sky-deck in the Western Hemisphere . It opened in March 2020, and is considered an architectural feat! The observation deck is jaw-dropping, it suspends in mid-air (how did they build this thing?!) and offers some of the best panoramic views of New York City. Tickets can be purchased here .

View from the Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is arguably the most iconic building in New York. Thankfully, the sweeping views from the observation deck lives up to the hype.

There’s actually two observation decks (86th floor & 102th floor). To visit the 102nd floor observation deck, you’ll need to purchase an additional ticket (at a hefty price point, which is not worth it in my opinion). The views from the Main Observation Deck on the 86th floor are remarkable!

Crowds are guaranteed most of the day, but especially at sunset. However, it gets cold quickly and folks tend to move fast, so it’s pretty easy to get close to the fence and take in the breathtaking view. From here, you’ll see the One World Trade Center, Chrysler Building, Rockefeller Plaza Center, Times Square and the Brooklyn Bridge. Tickets can be purchased on their website .

One World Trade Center viewpoint Best observation decks New York City

The One World Observatory sits high atop the 102nd floor of the One World Trade Center, making it the highest indoor observation deck in New York City (1,268 feet above street level). The panoramic views of NYC from this vantage have a tendency to shrink the city’s monolithic skyscrapers in a unique way.

The elevator ride to the observation deck is an experience in itself. You’ll get to see a time-lapse of the development of lower Manhattan from pre-Colonial times to present day. Brace yourself from the views from the top, this observation deck has the best New York City views.

You’ll see Rockefeller Plaza Center, the glorious Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Hudson River and all 5 boroughs from this epic viewpoint. If you’re not terrified of heights, I suggest checking out the Sky Portal (glass floor overlooking the city streets 100 floors below).

Fun fact: The One World Trade Center stands at 1,776 feet (including the spire), in honor of the year America declared independence.

skyline nyc travel

One of the best things about living in New York City is returning home. There’s an inexplicable feeling that overwhelms me every time I catch a glimpse of the breathtaking NYC skyline from a plane.

Seeing the view of New York from a plane gives you a unique vantage point that allows you to absorb the massive scale of this city. I mean, look at Central Park! Have your camera ready when flying into or out of NYC because these are easily some of the best views you’ll get during your trip.

List of the Best Viewpoints in NYC (Post Summary)

In sum, here’s the best viewpoints in New York City:

  • Top of the Rock NYC Observation Deck
  • Central Park
  • Time Warner Building
  • One World Observatory

The Staten Island Ferry travels between downtown Manhattan and Staten Island and the views from the water are fantastic with Lower Manhattan, the downtown Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty the stars of the show. Best of all, it’s free to ride the ferry!

There are also some great sunset cruises that circle Manhattan and offer great views from the river while enjoying a sundowner as the sun goes down on Manhattan – book a sunset cruise here!

Best views in New York tip: the Staten Island ferry is free to ride. The only slight inconvenience is that passengers have to disembark in Staten Island and queue to board the return ferry.

12 | Bar SixtyFive at the Rainbow Room

The Rainbow Room, on the 65th floor of the Rockefeller Center, is a great complement to a visit to Top of the Rock or as an alternative if you prefer to supplement views with cocktails!

The bar has an outdoor terrace which requires a minimum spend of $65, not too difficult to reach over cocktails in New York, but its spectacular views make it worth every cent.

Best views in New York tip: Make sure to reserve a table. We’d recommend visiting for sunset to enjoy a cocktail as the sun goes down and the Manhattan sky turns pink.

Best Views in New York City

13 | Liberty State Park

At the mouth of the Hudson River, the Liberty State Park in Jersey City has fantastic waterfront views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty.

It’s also home to the Empty Sky Memorial, a beautiful and poignant memorial to the New Jersey victims of the September 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Best views in New York tip:  If you’re planning on visiting Ellis Island, the ferries also leave from Liberty State Park.

Best Views in New York City

14 | R Lounge, Times Square

The neon lights of Times Square are often referred to as the crossroads of the world and the views are sensational from above the hustle and bustle of the neighbourhood.

Luckily, there are some hidden cocktail bars above the crowds and craziness Our favourite is the R Lounge in the Renaissance Hotel which offers incredible views of the bright lights and yellow cabs that the city is so famous for!

Best Views in New York City

15 | Time Warner Building, Columbus Circle

One of the best views in New York is from the Time Warner Building. It’s Columbus Circle location captures beautifully the contrast between the lush green of Central Park and the towering skyscrapers synonymous with the city.

The best free views are from the public space on the 4th floor or, if you feel like splashing out, the Mandarin Oriental has insane views from both its park view rooms and public areas.

It’s expensive but we treated ourselves to afternoon tea in The Aviary NYC, the Mandarin Oriental bar, on the 35th floor of the hotel and the bird’s eye views of Central Park and Columbus Circle took our breath away.

After checking out the views at the Time Warner Building, make your way to the park and check out some of our best things to do in Central Park.

Best Views in New York City

16 | The Cantor Roof Garden Bar, Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Met is one of the greatest museums in New York and what better way to round off an afternoon of culture than with a Martini stop at the rooftop bar.

The uninterrupted views of Central Park are spectacular and are beautifully framed by the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline.

Best view in New York tip: admission fees at the Met are recommended amounts so don’t feel under pressure to pay the full whack if you’re just stopping by for a drink.

17 | And Finally…From the sky

Some of the best views are unexpected! Always remember to look out of the window as you approach and depart the city by airplane. Or, if you want a real treat, arrange for a helicopter ride over the city!

While departing Newark on a recent flight to London we were gifted with one of the best views of New York we’ve ever seen with the city twinkling in the darkness beneath our wings.

Where is the thumbnail photo taken from?

it’s Liberty State Park in Jersey City.

Great list! Thanks for sharing, it will help with my upcoming visit to NYC.

Also wanted to mention, since I read a few of the articles that popped up on google, it sounds like this article (link removed) uses some of your descriptions verbatim.

I can only imagine how much time this took to write and wanted to flag that just in case you weren’t aware.

Could be nothing! But just wanted to let you know.

Thanks again for the great article! Love your content!

Thanks so much for your comment and shout out on the other site with the ‘similar’ article! Unfortunately, there’s not a lot we can do apart from making sure our content is better and based on our personal experiences! I LOVE that you have our back and called it out, thank you! 🙂

Best Skyline Views in New York City

skyline nyc travel

This post lists the best places to see incredible views of New York City.

The locations below were chosen by me and my fellow local tour guides who know where to go for stunning skyline views day and night.

Some of these locations are covered on our walking tours and you can preview what to expect from the videos of our tour guides visiting them.

Most are free, but some cost a few dollars, and a handful require that you purchase tickets.

We also looked at suggestions from our popular New York City Travel Tips Facebook group.

Our group of over 225,000 members consists of locals (like our tour guides), regular visitors, and newbies to the city.

After you've read this post, check out our group for more tips on visiting NYC!

Without further ado, get your cameras ready!

New York City Skyline

1. From Your Airplane

Well, this isn't exactly a free view --you did pay for your airplane ticket! Think of it as a freebie view.

Whichever airport you fly into, you are in for a treat!

skyline nyc travel

The views of the New York City skyline and the rest of the city will blow you away.

The views are exactly what you have seen in photographs and movies.

2. Staten Island Ferry

To see the tip of Lower Manhattan and get an up-close view of the Statue of Liberty, take the free Staten Island Ferry on a trip to Staten Island and back.

Most ferries have outside seating areas, where you can catch great views as well as a nice breeze.

The ferry runs 24 hours a day. You will share the boat with commuters and other visitors.

In the video below, Canden, a tour guide with Free Tours by Foot, gives tips on riding the ferry, including where to sit for the best views.

You can learn more from our in-depth guide on how to take the Staten Island Ferry .

3. Brooklyn Heights Promenade

You can enjoy great views of the Manhattan skyline by visiting the Brooklyn Heights Promenade , especially at night.

The Promenade has benches, is never very crowded, and is an amazing place to relax and take in the beautiful views.

In the image below, Tour Guide Dante taking a selfie (or a wefi) with his guests on one of our walking tours.

Brooklyn Heights Promenade

You can also get to the Promenade by walking over the Brooklyn Bridge, something you should have on your "must-do" list.

The promenade is a stop on our 3-hour Brooklyn Brid g e, Brooklyn Heights, and DUMBO Tour as well as our shorter Brooklyn Heights Tour .

4. Brooklyn Bridge

Walking over the Brooklyn Bridge has so many amazing aspects.

The bridge itself is a beautiful piece of architecture, but what is so special is the 360-degree view of the New York Harbor

From the pedestrian walkway, you will have spectacular views of Manhattan from the southern tip up to midtown Manhattan and beyond

Also, you will see the skyline of Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, the Manhattan Bridge, and Williamsburg in the distance.

You can even see the Statue of Liberty although she looks about 5 inches tall from the bridge.

In the video below, Tour Guide Katie takes you on a virtual walk across the bridge to take in the wonderful sights.

For more information, click here for our guide to Walking the Brooklyn Bridge or download our GPS-enabled Brooklyn Bridge Tour .

DUMBO is a historic and somewhat trendy neighborhood just across the river from Lower Manhattan and just to the north of Brooklyn Heights.

There are several waterfront parks all close to each other, so there is no shortage of space to throw down a blanket and have a picnic with spectacular views.

And, in this video, Derrick takes you on a virtual walk of DUMBO. Skip toward the end for the crazy awesome views.

Read more about what to do in DUMBO and if you are wondering how the neighborhood.

5. Brooklyn Bridge Park

Located south of the Brooklyn Bridge, the views will take your breath away.

There is plenty to do in the park as well.

There is even a beautiful early 20th-century carousel in the park.

6. Fulton Ferry Landing

You can also get a great view of Lower and Midtown Manhattan from the Fulton Ferry Landing in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

skyline nyc travel

Click here for directions to the Fulton Ferry Landing .

You can also take the East River Ferry ( see below ) which stops right at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

7. Empire Fulton Ferry Park

This park is north of the Brooklyn Bridge so you can snap pictures from a different viewpoint.

view from Empire Ferry Park

There is a nifty restored carousel here that looks magical at night with the Brooklyn Bridge and Lower Manhattan in the background.

8. Time Out Market

This large food market in DUMBO is located between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.

On the top floor, there is an outdoor seating area where the views are outstanding, especially at night.

You don't have to purchase anything to step outside, but the food there is pretty good.

There’s also an inside bar to grab a beer or cocktail and enjoy the same great views.

OTHER GREAT VIEWS

9. roosevelt island tram.

The tram to Roosevelt Island travels over the East River to connect Midtown Manhattan and this small, mostly residential island.

This is a fun way to get 360 views of NYC and beyond from a unique vantage point.

Although the ride on the tram is about 4 minutes, these may be the most exciting 4 minutes of your visit to New York!

Once at Roosevelt Island, you can relax and have plenty of time to take pictures from Southpoint Park.

You can experience it right now with this virtual ride with Tour Guide Katie.

Use this Roosevelt Island self-guided tour to see the sights.

The tram runs from 6 am to 2 am on Sundays through Thursdays and from 6 am to 3:30 am on Fridays and Saturdays. Read more about taking the tram to Roosevelt Island .

For outrageous views from the sky, take a helicopter ride . It's not as cheap as the tram, but it is an outstanding experience!

10. Manhattan Bridge

Though walking over the Manhattan Bridge isn’t on most tourists' to-do lists, it is still something worth doing if you have some extra time on your trip.

view from Manhattan Bridge

The bridge itself isn’t aesthetically pleasing, but the walkway is practically empty compared to the crowded walkway across the Brooklyn Bridge.

The best views are from the lower level looking through the fence.

You’ll see Manhattan and also get a view of the Brooklyn Bridge against the skyline.

11. Battery Park

Located at the tip of Manhattan, this medium-sized park has wonderful waterfront views of New York Harbor including the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

This is where the Statue of Liberty ferries depart.

skyline nyc travel

There are a few benches along the water, and many more inside the park, where there are historic monuments and sculptures.

Read more about Battery Park .

12. Time Warner Building

This shopping mall at Columbus Circle has a massive glass window on the 4th floor that offers a view of contrasts.

view from Time Warner Building

It’s an up-close look at the Monument at Columbus Circle with Central Park on the left and the beautiful Art Deco buildings along Central Park South and some skyscrapers peeking out.

During the holidays, there is a Christmas Market here and some of the best pictures can be taken then as the lobby of the building decks its halls with brilliant oversized stars.

It's also a great spot to watch the Macys Thanksgiving Parade !

VIEWS FROM CRUISES AND FERRIES

Views from the water are great because they are unobstructed and you will enjoy your time on a relaxing cruise or ferry ride.

You can opt to take a commuter ferry for just $4 and great views of different parts of the city.

Ferries, however, are generally quick rides without specifically taking you to the best vantage points.

On the other hand, for a reasonable price, you can take a sightseeing cruise or boat tours that circle Manhattan giving you fantastic views of the island from different perspectives.

Sightseeing cruises are longer than commuter ferry rides and you also learn about the city during your trip.

13. Sightseeing Cruises

The choices available can seem a little overwhelming so we've compiled all the information on the different types of cruises and tours offered by the most popular companies.

To help decide if a boat tour or cruise is right for you, read our post Which New York Boat Tour or Cruise is Best?

14. NYC Ferry

This ferry service, formerly known as the East River Ferry, has several routes offering get an array of amazing views, depending on which route you take.

Most routes have views of Lower and Midtown Manhattan skylines, the Brooklyn Bridge, and more.

east river ferry view

The ferry isn't free, but it's only $4, which is not much more than the cost of a subway ride.

It's a great scenic alternative to taking the subway, so give it a try! Check our guide to riding this ferry .

15. Governors Island Ferry

This small recreational island just 4 minutes from Manhattan by ferry is located in the middle of New York Harbor.

From the ferry, you’ll get great views of the Lower Manhattan skyline and the Brooklyn shoreline, including the Brooklyn Bridge.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Holly Hyman Kurzrok (@hollys_hot_spot)

You can even see the Statue of Liberty off in the distance.

Once you are on the island, the best spot for views is from the island's highest peak at Outlook Hill.

Governor's Island is a pretty nifty place to go, especially in the summer. See our post, Top Things to Do on Governors Island .

SKYSCRAPER OBSERVATION DECKS

More likely than not, you planned on visiting an observation deck to get sky-high views of NYC.

All these decks offer unbelievable views for miles around.

The hard part is knowing which one to visit since they differ in vantage points and price ranges.

For some guidance read our post comparing the observation decks .

We go over ticket prices, how to find deals, and the pros and cons of each deck.

Whichever one you decide to see, you will have unforgettable views of the many skylines of New York City!

The pictures below show what you can expect to see from each of the observation decks.

16. Empire State Building

Day or night, the views from this iconic building are outstanding.

You can choose from two viewing platforms: the 86th Floor and the 102nd floor.

skyline nyc travel

20. SUMMIT One Vanderbilt

With outrageous 360-degree views from atop SUMMIT One Vanderbilt , you take your pick of views!

view from Summit One Vanderbilt

Unlike the other observation decks, SUMMIT gives you a view of Central Park and so much more!

21. Cantor Rooftop Garden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

It’s surprising how few people, even New Yorkers, know that there is a rooftop garden and bar at the Metropolitan Museum of Art!

As the museum is on the east side of Central Park, the roof terrace offers a marvelous view of the park and the surrounding buildings.

skyline nyc travel

There are some benches and tables, and a lush lawn to sit on. There is a bar that sells cocktails and wine, as well as limited food. But there is no obligation to make any purchase to enjoy the view.

The rooftop is open during the day, approximately mid–April through October. Entrance to the rooftop is included in the price of admission to the museum.

PARKS WITH THE BEST FREE VIEWS

Many of NYC's parks offer the best views of New York City all for free.

Visiting one of the parks below gets you a two-for-one! Enjoy a beautiful green space and get amazing skyline views!

22. Central Park

The view from inside Central Park is one of NYC's most iconic. This much-loved park is surrounded by some of the city's most beautiful buildings.

Just to name a few, you can see the Neo-Renaissance Beresford, the Plaza Hotel, and even the Ghostbusters Building !

For the most cinematic skyline from Central Park, go ice skating in Wollman Rink !

For the most relaxing view, head to the Sheep Meadow, lie down, and look up!

view from Wollman rink

Belvedere Castle not only has great views but is photo-worthy itself!

It sits on the 2nd highest natural elevation in the park, so the views of the surrounding areas and the city beyond are excellent.

Umpire Rock, in the southwest corner of the park, has sensational views of the 20th and 21st-century buildings along Central Park South and nearby West 57th Street (Billionaire's Row).

Find out more about things to do in Central Park here .

23. High Line Park

The High Line is a narrow, vertical park that stretches from 14th Street to 30th Street on Manhattan's west side parallel to the Hudson River.

What is unique about the views from the High Line is that you get a look at Manhattan inward as well as outward.

You will have views of Manhattan from a perspective different from most other locations in Manhattan.

Read more about the High Line .

24. Little Island

Since Manhattan is long and gets narrower as you go toward the bottom, you can find views of Lower Manhattan from certain waterfront locations in Midtown Manhattan.

Little Island is one such location.

Situated on the waterfront in Chelsea, this most unusual park provides a view of Lower Manhattan and New Jersey.

Check out the views in this virtual walk of Little Island led by Kyle, who also works with us, Free Tours by Foot NYC.

You can even see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island way, way off in the distance!

WILLIAMSBURG PARKS

25. domino park.

The views of the city's skyline are great and it's especially good for families as it has a funky playground!

Some of the industrial structures that had been in this location for decades remain and are integrated into the park.

It makes for an interesting atmosphere.

26. Marsha P. Johnson State Park

This 7-acre park in the heart of Williamsburg has incredible views of Manhattan from its lush lawn.

In addition to the views, you can experience Smorgasbord, the largest weekly open-air food market in America.

Come for the views. Stay for the food!

PIERS WITH THE BEST FREE VIEWS

As Manhattan is surrounded by water, dozens of piers jut out from its shores.

Most piers stopped being used for shipping decades ago, and many piers went into disrepair.

Luckily, several have been restored for recreational purposes and even more are on the way!

The piers below offer marvelous views of either Manhattan, Brooklyn, or New Jersey. In some cases more than one!

31. Pier 15 and the East River Waterfront Esplanade

This public pier at the South Street Seaport has two floors of observation decks with seats and benches.

The adjacent greenway is narrower but in a more natural setting.

view from Pier 15

Both spots are lovely places to sit by the water and take in the fantastic views of the Brooklyn shoreline, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan Bridge, and the Williamsburg Bridge.

32. Pier 57 Rooftop Park

Pier 57 is at the end of W. 15th St. and 11th Ave.

The pier and the building on it, once used for cruise ships, were built in 1954. It stopped being used in 2004, but in 2010 renovations began.

Google rents the massive building, and has made the roof open to the public!

skyline nyc travel

The views are incredible, with Little Island and Lower Manhattan to the south, and the surrounding skyscrapers, including Edge to the Northeast.

33. Pier 26

Pier 26 is at the southern end of the Hudson River Greenway between Hubert and North Moore Sts.

It has a spacious lawn, boardwalks, and seating areas.

In our post, Helicopter Tours over New York , we’ve analyzed which New York helicopter tour is best - both quality and value-wise.

We also share some tips for finding concessions for helicopter rides.

TIPS FROM LOCALS AND TRAVELERS

The places we included in this post are ones that our local guides think are the best.

But we like to share the opinions and suggestions from members of our New York Travel Tips Facebook group so you can hear what other locals and visitors to NYC have to say.

We included some comments with pictures to give you a sense of how amazing these views are.

Of course, the city’s five observation decks came out on top. Here is a very small sample from the several hundred opinions from group members.

skyline nyc travel

We like what this group member says -- each deck is different but all have great views.

skyline nyc travel

Many people recommended taking a cruise for sunset and nighttime magic.

Here are two suggestions, and you can see from the picture how great the ride will be!

skyline nyc travel

Here two group members loved their experiences on the NYC Ferry, particularly the Astoria route from Pier 11 to Roosevelt Island.

An awesome tip is to take the ferry one way and then take the Roosevelt Island tram back.

skyline nyc travel

The entire journey is under $7 per person!

This group member took a beautiful picture from the NYC Ferry and also recommended Brooklyn Heights Promenade as one of the best free spots.

skyline nyc travel

Pier 57 came up frequently, and as you can see there are plenty of perks to heading here. Public bathrooms in NYC are not easy to find!

skyline nyc travel

There was no shortage of tips about the best parks in Brooklyn and Queens. You can read more about these above.

skyline nyc travel

Plenty of group members liked the views from New Jersey. While we suggested Liberty State Park, there are other spots in New Jersey to see the Manhattan skyline.

skyline nyc travel

Some of these are among our favorites, not just for the views but because the location itself is an interesting destination.

skyline nyc travel

This group member enjoyed views from all price points: free Staten Island Ferry, a cheap NYC ferry ride, and a ticketed observation deck (which you can see, while she doesn't normally spend money on such things, she felt the experience was worth it).

27 Best views in NYC for free 2024 (From a Native New Yorker!)

There is a really good chance that this post contains affiliate links. If you click through and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission (for which I am deeply grateful) at no additional cost to you.

Did someone say best views of the New York City’s skyline for free? As a New Yorker , having spent most of my adult life here, I would lie to you if I told you that I ever tire of the breathtaking NYC skyline views, especially when they are free. With that said, I can assure you that as a local I know all the spots for the best views in NYC for free.

It does not matter where in the world I go, how many scenic drives I take or views I’ve seen, there’s just something special about the views of NYC!

As a travel writer, I am always on the go and I can be described as a “purveyor of the perfect view” (I love rooftop bars and lounges with amazing views, restaurants on the water, unique locations and so on).

rowboat-central-park-new-york-city

But let me tell you that every time I travel, I really look forward to landing again in NYC. I love looking outside of the window to find my beautiful Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Freedom Tower, Statue of Liberty, our bridges and so on.

As I write this, I am in my other home-base in Europe and I grow nostalgic about my City that never sleeps, especially when the holidays (Christmas season in NYC) will soon be here.

There is nothing more spectacular than seeing the Empire State Building lit up during the holidays and seeing all the splendor of the lights across NYC from the top.

Statue of Liberty - best views in NYC

Well, let’s go back to what you hope to read more about: where to enjoy the best NYC Skyline views! Here is a list of spots where you can find the best views of the New York City’s skyline for free.

I know that most NYC first time visitors will usually pay the exorbitant fees at one or all of the most popular observation decks ( The Empire State Building ,  One World Trade Center  and  Top of The Rock ) and they are amazing but I also want you to know that there are other ways to enjoy the best NYC skyline views on a budget.

tips from a new yorker - best views in nyc for free - manhattan skyline views - NYC style

Wondering where to stay while visiting New York City ? Finding a great deal on a hotel in New York City can be challenging. As a Native New Yorker, I am going to include some suggestions below that I usually recommend to friends and acquaintances who are visiting NYC for the first time or who prefer to stay in a good location close to Manhattan.

  • Budget: The Row | The Jane | Pod 39 |
  • Mid-Budget: The Hudson | The James Soho | The Renwick | The Redbury
  • Luxury: The Bowery | The Dominick | The St. Regis | The Plaza

For more in-depth information about the best NYC neighborhoods to stay in, and the hotels in those areas, read this complete guide on Where to stay in New York City .

Best views in NYC for free: The Best places to see the Manhattan skyline

Best views in manhattan for free, the highline.

Walking the Highline is a must while you are in NYC. The High Line is a 1.45-mile-long elevated linear park, greenway and rail trail created on a former New York Central Railroad spur, located on the west side of Manhattan in New York City.

It has a great history and it’s not far from some of my favorite places: The Chelsea Market, Meatpacking District and more.

the-highline-chelsea-new-york-city

Tip: In that area you will find one of my favorite hotels, The Standard, which has a rooftop bar called Top of the Standard and arguably has one of the best views from any  rooftop bar  in New York City.

You can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view overlooking the  Lower Manhattan skyline , the  Statue of Liberty , the  Hudson River  and the  Midtown skyline .

They also have a nightclub called Le Bain for those who enjoy the nightlife.

Central Park

central park in new york city

You can get amazing views of the NYC skyline from many spots inside Central Park and the reservoir.

My favorite spots are Harlem Meer, The Great Lawn, the Belvedere Castle, Bow Bridge, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, among others.

Go and experience them first hand and just lose yourself in the beauty of the Park. It is totally worthwhile!

Battery Park

Want to see free views of the New York City skyline, including the southern tip of Manhattan? Then, you should visit The Battery, which is a 25-acre park that faces the New York City Harbor.

The views from the harbor are breathtaking but there are also grand lawns, perennial gardens, bike paths (in case you visit during a beautiful day and want to rent one of the citibikes available all around the city).

Btw, The Battery has also a SeaGlass carousel that makes this traditional experience just a little more special.

Roosevelt Island

Roosevelt Island is part of Manhattan, but it is connected to Queens by a bridge, on the East River and it gives you great panoramic views of the NYC skyline.

It is a total hidden gem and a great place to visit especially when you are already in Queens. It is very easy to take an MTA bus from Astoria onto Roosevelt Island.

Tip:  For amazing views (at the cost of a Subway ride), take the Roosevelt Island Tram from Midtown East (60th Street and 2nd avenue). It takes you to the Island in just a few minutes but offers excellent views of Manhattan from above.

Tram hours are 6:00am to 2:00am Sunday to Thursday and 6:00am to 3:30am Fridays and Saturdays.

Governors Island is a 172-acre island in New York Harbor and it is part of the borough of Manhattan in New York City. From Governor’s Island, you will also get great views of the southern-most tip of Lower Manhattan, but that is if you visit over the summer.

Governor’s Island is only open during the summer season (May through September), which is the best time of the year to visit if you are an outdoor concert-goer, or a fan of music festivals, foodie events and more.

There are so many activities happening there, you can check out more information  on their website .

Fort Tryon Park

A hidden gem in Uptown Manhattan, NY is Fort Tryon Park! I totally love going there, and it’s very conveniently located near the A train’s 190th Street stop. Fort Tryon Park extends from 192nd Street and Fort Washington Avenue northward to Riverside Drive near 200th Street.

It is framed on the west by the West Side Highway and to the east by Broadway. You not only get amazing views but you can also visit my favorite place, The Cloisters (and no, I am not a nun!).

The Cloisters is a museum in Fort Tryon Park specializing in European medieval architecture, sculpture and decorative arts, with a focus on the Romanesque and Gothic periods.

It is is located on 4 acres (1.6 hectares) inside the Park, overlooking the Hudson River. Who knew that such a gem existed in Washington Heights. A must-see and a great spot for pictures!

Here is a guide to the best parks in New York City !

Randall’s Island Park

A cool spot in the middle of New York City, Randall’s Island Park comprises most of an island in the East River, between East Harlem, the South Bronx and Astoria, Queens. You can find really nice views there of the skyline and you can barbecue, walk around and/or bike on the pathway along the waterfront.

I used to go there to play golf, since they have an area there including a tennis center. During the summer, it is a very enjoyable place to hang out with friends and family. Randall’s Island has hosted many events, such as Lollapalooza, Cirque du Soleil and the Electric Zoo, among other events.

NOTE: unless you are attending an event, it’s better to plan day trips only to this more remote location.

Another insider tip: Taking the East River Ferry

Even if it is not free of charge, but rather than taking the underground subway (both same price – $2.75) into Queens, to get the best views and probably to find things to do in Queens for the day , I suggest that you take the ferry from the NYC East River into Long Island City or Astoria Queens, since it is super affordable and you can get incredible shots, especially on a beautiful day.

I recently took the East River ferry and it was super quick and what a scenic ride!

Best Views in New York City for Free: Seeing the Manhattan Skyline from Queens!

A lot of visitors stay in Manhattan and forget about amazing boroughs such as Queens, NY. There are so many things to do in Queens.

I have been a local of the Astoria and Long Island City areas for the past 10 years and all I can say is that, if you don’t make it to Queens, you are truly missing out.

Here are some of the best scenic skyline views from Queens:

queensboro bridge queems new york

Riding the 7 train

Actually, you also get fantastic, skyline views from the 7 train, when it’s above ground. It’s not free but, assuming you will have a metrocard throughout your journey in NYC, it’s only one swipe.

The 7 train views of the NYC skyline is just a beautiful and unique perspective for pictures too. You just have to take the subway towards Queens and it will go above ground after the Queensboro Plaza Stop.

Insider Tip: You can continue on the subway and get off at the last stop, Main Street, to explore the Chinatown in Flushing, Queens. There are tons of budget friendly food spots and stores.

Long Island City Waterfront at Gantry Plaza State Park

Another amazing location to get the best views of Midtown Manhattan, and one of my top favorite ones as a NYC local, is the Long Island City Waterfront at Gantry Plaza State Park.

I really love how, from the Long Island City Promenade, you can get the best full panoramic view of the east side of Manhattan. I totally enjoy walking along this promenade. In the summer there are so many events in the area, especially on the LIC Landing.

NY Lady in Red Moving around Town In Style - Long Island City, New York City

You can also enjoy wine or coffee from the brand COFFEED (which can now be found in so many different places around NYC). I totally remember when COFFEED had only one spot next to my old apartment in Long Island City (which is the COFFEED LIC flagship).

I used to walk there to get coffee, snacks and to work remotely. Last time, while I was walking around Times Square, I even saw one COFFEED stall there. It is nice to see how much the brand has grown.

Insider Tip: Do not forget to take a picture with the Instagrammable and Iconic Neon Pepsi sign that can be found at Gantry Plaza State Park.

Astoria Park

I might be biased since Astoria is one of my favorite neighborhoods in New York. There are so many things to do in Astoria, especially eating.

It is a foodie’s paradise with food options from all over the world. Anyhow, going back to the views, you should visit Astoria Park. You can get beautiful views of the skyline.

I enjoy walking around the park and sometimes sitting there because it’s such a relaxing place to people watch too. There is also a public pool (one of the oldest and largest in NYC) and for those traveling to New York with children, the children’s park is very well maintained.

It is so nice to watch the sunset from there, next to the river, enjoying the NYC Skyline views overlooking the Bronx and Manhattan. You will see dramatic views of Hell Gate and of the Triboro Bridge.

Best views in NYC from Astoria Park

Hunter’s Point South Park

Still, looking for more cool spots for the best views in NYC? Well, another waterfront park that stretches along the East River, south of Gantry Plaza State Park and Steven Holl’s Hunter’s Point Community Library, is Hunter’s Point South Park. It is so cool to walk around this promenade which is also connected to Gantry Plaza State Park.

Not only do you get the waterside promenade, but there are plenty of activities to do in this park; plus, there is a cantilever out by the river platform, perfect for viewing the skyline and the waterfront. Queens truly offers wonderful NYC skyline views!

In my opinion, one of the best free views in NYC.

Steven Holl’s Hunter’s Point Community Library at Hunter’s Point South Park

If you want something similar but a little more unique than views from the promenade at Hunter’s Point South Park, what about seeing the NYC skyline views from a library?

It’s especially perfect if you love books and views… so then, do not miss entering the Steven Holl’s Hunter’s Point Community Library at Hunter’s South Point Park. It has a cool architectural facade with large, irregular windows providing views of the waterfront and Manhattan that are simply breathless!

Queensbridge Park

Another more underrated park that has great views of NYC is Queensbridge Park. Found alongside the water, it offers direct views of the Queensboro Bridge and the Manhattan skyline. It is just a few steps from the 21St-Queensbridge Subway Station on the F Line.

It is another spot in Queens where you can have a picnic, take photos and/or just simply enjoy the free views of the amazing NYC skyline. You just really can’t go wrong!

Best Free Views in NYC: Admiring the NYC Skyline from Brooklyn

The brooklyn bridge.

Walking the Brooklyn Bridge is the most amazing experience, everything from the architecture to the free views of the breathtaking NYC skyline and 360 degrees views of the NY harbor. A must-do while visiting New York!

Fulton ferry landing in Brooklyn Bridge Park

A great spot to catch the ferry and the views. Another way to cross the pond if you do not want to walk the Brooklyn Bridge.

Dumbo (which stands for “Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass”)

Dumbo is one of my favorite neighborhoods in New York City! I love walking around this area and taking pictures. It is the first neighborhood that you will come upon as soon as you step off of The Brooklyn Bridge or Manhattan Bridge.

So, as you have probably guessed by now, the Manhattan skyline views are just too perfect from this NYC Neighborhood. It’s definitely worth a visit!

In addition, there are so many beautiful streets and small alleys for perfect photos with the Manhattan Bridge behind you and, of course, the Brooklyn Bridge.

It is great to just cross the Brooklyn Bridge first and then end up in Dumbo on a beautiful day or you can also take the F train to York Street station.

Brooklyn Heights promenade

If you keep walking, you can find it after Dumbo or just get off at the High Street Brooklyn Bridge Station (A or C train).

Super nice views of Lower Manhattan and a great stroll. The promenade has benches for relaxing and it is less touristic. And easily accessible by crossing over the Brooklyn Bridge.

Brooklyn Heights Promenade

This is a posh residential area of elegant brownstones, nice children waterfront playgrounds and an amazing tree-lined promenade along the East River.

The views are incredible of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. I love sitting on the benches for people watching and to take in all of the views.

As you can imagine, the neighborhood also attracts visitors and local families to the landscaped walkways of waterfront Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Locals hang out in the area since there are great restaurants, cafes and bars around Henry Street.

Dumbo New York City - Winter Holidays

Williamsburg Waterfront at East River State Park

Williamsburg is a cool hipster neighborhood with great music spots, street art, cafes, restaurants and of course, a great waterfront at East River State Park with incredible views of the Manhattan Skyline.

Tip: Stop by The Ides Bar inside the Wythe Hotel for drinks and to enjoy the sunset with the NYC skyline views or if you are visiting during the weekend, you can venture out to the famous Smorgasburg, a pop-up, to eat, drink, shop, and listen to music.

Domino Park

Another local favorite place to enjoy the best views of NYC, and to catch an epic sunset, is Domino Park. Domino Park is a cool, 6-acre public waterfront park in the neighborhood of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. The Manhattan skyline views are just magnificent. Best part, you can take the most awesome pictures from there.

Insider Tip: I recommend trying Tacocina when you get hungry. It is a laid-back restaurant, within Domino park, that serves food inspired by Mexican flavors, such as tacos, snacks, Mexican beer, and cocktails. Fun and delicious!

Best Views of the NYC Skyline for free – From Staten Island, NY (Views from the Water)

Staten island ferry.

Catch the ferry to Staten Island and get great pictures of the Statue of Liberty and of the NYC skyline free of charge.

The ferry runs 24 hours a day and it has outside seating. It is a great moment to relax and just enjoy the views.

Tip: If you are hungry and decide to get off on Staten Island, there is an amazing area full of restaurants from Sri Lanka. I truly love it there because the food is super authentic.

One of my favorite Sri Lankan restaurants is: Lakruwana. You will love the decor and all. If you do not want to get lost, for a minimum cost, you can take an Uber to the restaurant.

There’s also a small subway system and there are buses as well. You can use your unlimited (or pay as you go) MetroCard for both.

Note: There is also a new attraction in Staten Island, The Empire Outlets. If you would like to combine great views with shopping, you should go there. I included the Empire Outlets on my guide to budget shopping in NYC.

South Beach

From South Beach, you get the most wonderful views of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. So many cars crossing this bridge on a daily basis, but they can’t appreciate their surroundings as much as you can from South Beach.

Best views in NYC: Seeing the Manhattan Skyline from the Bronx

If you are visiting the Bronx, to visit the Bronx Zoo or other attractions, you can get nice views of the skyline from Wave Hill a 28-acre estate in the Hudson Hill section of Riverdale.

A little more of a commute from the city center, but it is definitely a beautiful public park with horticultural gardens and a cultural center.

Many many years ago, I used to live in the Riverdale area, which is pretty nice and also not far from Upper Manhattan.

Wave Hill is situated on the slopes overlooking the Hudson River, with expansive views across the river to the New Jersey Palisades.

Barretto Point Park

This local park in the Bronx is a hidden gem and one of those underrated things to do in NYC. Plus, it offers great views of the Manhattan Skyline.

It is located in the back of Hunts Point’s industrial area. There are also places to sit and relax, perfect for picnics, and there’s even a floating pool. The Bronx does offer much more than you think, which is why we’re here to help you to discover the ‘real’ NYC!

Best Views in NYC: Seeing the Manhattan Skyline from New Jersey

Having lived in New Jersey for 3 years (and when I say Jersey, it’s practically Manhattan since I was in Weehawken, a city located right off of the Tunnel, 15 minutes away from NYC). I can testify first hand to the amazing views that can be seen from there.

Hi, some of the best views of NYC are seen from New Jersey. I used to take the bus every day and I never tired of the views. I totally miss that.

Here is a list of where you can see NYC  skyline views from New Jersey:

Boulevard East – Weehawken

Very close to the city, 10-15 minutes away (depending on the traffic) from Port Authority Bus Terminal, you can take a bus that runs along Weehawken’s Waterfront Park with several stops along the way.

You will definitely see the spectacular views right away even from just sitting on the bus.

NOTE: The bus to NJ is 3 dollars, but you can stroll around the area and enjoy the view free of charge. There are also amazing Cuban Restaurants and other cuisines in the area.

skyline nyc travel

Frank Sinatra Park in Hoboken

This park is easily accessible by taking the Path from Penn station. The PATH is the rail train that connects Manhattan to areas of New Jersey such as, but not limited to: Hoboken, Jersey City, etc.

If you have a pay as you go Metrocard, it will be two of those rides for a round trip on the path train.

NOTE: You cannot use your unlimited New York Metrocard for the PATH Trains. Once in Hoboken, there are also many places to dine and shop along the main Street called Washington Street.

Hoboken Park

Liberty State Park in Jersey City

I love having a pot-luck picnic with friends at the Liberty State Park in Jersey City, while admiring Lady Liberty, overlooking the NYC skyline.

Same as Hoboken, you can take the PATH train here and it is super convenient and fairly easy to get to.

This is another of my favorite places, especially over the summer. Plus, Jersey City has become a very trending neighborhood with great spots for brunch, dinner, drinks and fun.

Every time I go, I’m pleasantly surprised to see how many new places have opened. I totally recommend that you check out this park and city for a different experience outside of NYC, while enjoying the best views of NYC.

Bonus: Rooftop Bars & lounges in Manhattan with a wonderful NYC skyline view – Free Rooftop Views NYC Edition

If you are in the mood for a cocktail, here are some suggestions of rooftop bars in Manhattan where you can get a great view free along with the cost of your drink.

230 5th Avenue

One of my favorite rooftop bars is 230 5th Avenue. The admission is free and you can go to straight up to the roof and take in some awesome shots with the Empire State Building behind you. Great photo opportunity!

230 5th avenue in nyc

I do know if you go there, you might be tempted to get a cocktail to enjoy with the view but my tip to you is to go during happy hour!

Luckily, 230 5th Avenue has one of the longest happy hours, starting at 2:00pm. The happy hour has great deals for drinks and appetizers. I usually go there for that too.

If you go a little later (since the happy hour ends at 7:00pm), you can probably stay late enough to catch the Empire State Building all light up behind you in your selfies.

Heading to NY in the wintertime ? Not to worry since 230 5th Avenue offers you a red robe to wear on the rooftop and, to keep you cozy, they also have outdoor heaters and in the recent years inflatable igloos to sit in.

Also, there are many hot drink options to help keep you warm. Honestly, it’s one of my favorite rooftops anywhere!

Press Lounge

Another favorite rooftop lounge for me is Press Lounge, due to their incredible views, delicious drinks and great music.

Press Lounge in NYC

Downtown Dream Hotel – PH-D Rooftop Lounge

The Dream Hotel Penthouse Rooftop Lounge also has great opportunities for amazing views of the Manhattan skyline which includes a direct line of sight to the Hudson River. The crowd is usually very nice and the lounge turns into a big party every night.

*There are so many other rooftops bars in New York City that I love, that you should look out for another post coming soon.

Other options to get the best views in NYC that comes with a price

Helicopter ride – new york city view from above.

Another way to get the best views of New York City is actually from the sky. Nobody can argue that a helicopter ride is one of the most amazing ways to see New York from above, even though it does comes with a price.

But if you can afford it, you are in for a treat! I recently went on a helicopter ride over New York City and it was epic!

You can book your unique helicopter travel over Manhattan by CLICKING HERE .

MET Museum Rooftop Bar

Last but not least, if you want to combine your love for museums with a cocktail and a view, the perfect place to go is The Met Roof Garden Cafe & Martini Bar inside the  Metropolitan Museum of Art  (MET).

The views from there are impressive. You won’t regret it.

Plus, the MET is one of my favorite museums in the world. If you have the time, you should visit it and enjoy the spectacular exhibits.

Boat and cruise tours in NYC

There are always many  boat and cruise tours  options in NYC.

Some of them have even themes, such as  architecture , for beer lovers, celebrating the holidays , Harry Potter , dance parties, etc. What a great way to meet people with similar interests.

There are  champagne and sunset boat cruises  and some that only circle  around the Statue of Liberty .

Also, you can find complete packages with  bus, boat and walking tour activities.  It’s a great way to save money by bundling activities and see New York City from many different locations.

I hope that this list of spots, where you can enjoy the best views of NYC for free, helps you to see New York City from a new and unique perspective.

Traveling Anywhere Soon?

Everything you need to know before you go: Essential Travel Items to pack and more.

IMPORTANT: Don’t forget to buy travel insurance whenever you travel since it is essential! I am a fan of World Nomads for short-term trips. Best to protect yourself from any possible injury, sickness and theft abroad.

  • Photos are critical for capturing moments, documenting memories and can make the most precious gifts! And since you’ll probably be snapping tons of them during your getaway, I would suggest getting a good quality mirrorless camera. It is not heavy to carry around, takes amazing pictures and, because it’s wifi enabled, I can send the photos straight to my mobile phone. The one that I personally use is: Sony Alpha 6000 Mirrorless Camera . The portraits lens that comes with the camera is amazing but, since I take so many photos for work, I also bought an additional lens – the 18-105mm .
  • I also recommend an action camera like the Go Pro Hero 6 . Good for adventure travel, action shots, water sports shots and more.
  • Weather can be unpredictable in almost every destination. This is why I always carry with me a small, lightweight umbrella and a raincoat.
  • I always keep a big scarf in my bag, since it is helpful when it gets cooler in the evening, and it’s also a great accessory for my outfits, as a cover up especially when you need to go inside a spiritual or religious place. You never know! One of my favorite is an infinity scarf by Waypoint Goods , which has a secret Hidden Zipper pocket. You can hide money, your passport and any other valuables.
  • I love to have a few sets of small earrings , because sometimes they tend to get lost.
  • I always bring extra hair ties , pins and clips , in case the weather gets crazy, I can always pick up my hair.
  • I prefer cross body travel bags. They are convenient, easy to access, transition well from day to night, as well as keeping you better protected from theft. I really like this one from Bagallini or this one from Lo and Sons.
  • Waterproof boots – These are good regardless the weather.
  • Comfortable walking sandals – For days with good weather.
  • Earbuds – Perfect for listening to music during different stages of the trip.
  • If you are a girl who loves make-up like myself , I totally recommend the Urban Decay Born to Run palette . It is what I always carry with me during my travels.
  • For those of us who love answering emails, working or reading on the go: I cannot travel without my Amazon Fire Tablet HD 8 . I have so many books on it from my kindle unlimited and it really keeps me entertained while on the go. Plus, it’s convenient for me to answer some emails and get some work done.

Upon entering the Mandarin Oriental’s 35th floor Sky Lobby , guests are greeted by artist Dale Chihuly’s magnificent crystal sculpture that sets the tone for one of New York’s most sophisticated and thoughtfully designed hotels. The Mandarin Oriental’s distinctive design elements and artworks pay homage to its Asian inspiration and are guided by the principles of legendary Master Feng Shui, who has created a harmonious space well removed from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis below. The MO Lounge restaurant serves up a taste of the East alongside unrivaled panoramas of Central Park, and each of the hotel’s lavishly decorated suites offer views either of Central Park or the Hudson River. For a unique East Side meets West Side perspective, consider the outrageous Suite 5000. Renaissance New York Chelsea

renaissance new york chelsea nyc hotels with skyline views

The Renaissance pitches itself as a lifestyle hotel for a younger demographic who want a quirkier experience than what’s offered at most hotel chains. This is epitomized in the funky wall decoration that climbs from the lobby to the first floor of the Renaissance New York Chelsea — a massive art installation made up of hundreds of mounted antiques — a nod to the hotel’s former life as the home of the Antiques Garage flea market. This has become Chelsea’s most popular NYC hotel with skyline views. At the top of the hotel, spread over the 38th and 39th floors, is Somewhere Nowhere, a garden lounge and open-air rooftop pool run by the El Grupo SN nightlife company, which plays host to some of the hippest (and highest) parties in New York. For partygoers looking out from the rooftop pool it can feel like winning at a game of sightseeing bingo. The East River, Brooklyn Bridge, the top of Madison Square and, looming large in the foreground, the gargantuan Empire State building provide the perfect backdrop for a night out in the city that never sleeps.

1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge

1 hotel brooklyn bridge nyc hotels with skyline views

For the forward-thinking, environmentally conscious traveler with a weakness for lavish living, the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge is undoubtedly the benchmark for sustainable luxury in New York City. Inspired by nature and with an explicit pledge to lead the conversation on sustainability, the hotel’s green credentials are conspicuous in the little details, from the recycled rainwater water system to its’ no-plastics policy and the furniture crafted with reclaimed wood from old New York water towers. These elements lend an earthy, natural character to the hotel and its guestrooms, which one could easily mistake for an exquisite wilderness cabin were it not for the exceptional views through the window of the Brooklyn Bridge or the Statue of Liberty. The views of the Lower Manhattan skyline across the East River from the rooftop pool deck and plunge pool, use of which is exclusive for hotel guests, are unparalleled.

60 Furman Street, Brooklyn Price: From $366 per night

Equinox Hotel

equinox hotel nyc hotels with skyline views

When the pandemic prompted leading names in the hospitality industry to pivot towards a guest experience that prioritizes health and well-being, the Equinox at Hudson Yards saw no need. They were already well ahead of the game. This sleek, modern entry into the New York luxury hotel scene guarantees that guests will leave a little bit better off than when they arrived, with rooms specifically designed to restore and revive courtesy of a plethora of details including spring-free beds infused with temperature-regulating natural fibers, state-of-the-art soundproofing technologies, and AC units fitted with optimum medical-grade filters. The best views are from the rooftop pool and, of course, the signature fitness center — probably the largest hotel gym in the world — where your bench press or treadmill overlooks the River Hudson and Manhattan’s West Side skyline. For even more spectacular vistas, take a trip to the Edge. The Western Hemisphere’s highest outdoor sky deck is located on the Equinox’s doorstep, and stepping out onto its glass floor suspended 100 stories in the air will delight and terrify in equal measure.

33 Hudson Yards, Manhattan Price: From $700

Conrad New York Downtown

conrad hotel nyc hotels with skyline views

The Conrad New York Downtown ’s commitment to delivering strong visuals is evident from the moment you step into the atrium. Legendary artist Sol LeWitt’s Loopy Doopy (Blue and Purple), a striking painting that looms ten stories high, is the crowning jewel in the hotel’s extensive contemporary art collection that numbers some 2,000 works across its public areas and 463 suites. All the suites have been refurbished during the pandemic, so expect to find sleek, stylish interiors in every room. For the hotel’s signature views of the New York Harbor, opt for a Hudson River Suite. In the evening, drink in the iconic sight of the Statue of Liberty standing guard over the River Hudson with a cocktail at the distinguished Loopy Doopy rooftop bar, whose name, borrowed from the artwork downstairs, embodies the hotel’s unique positioning as an art-led experience.

102 North End Eve, Manhattan Price: From $262

The Williamsburg Hotel

the williamsburg hotel nyc hotels with skyline views

Once considered the bohemian heartbeat of Brooklyn, gentrification in the former manufacturing neighborhood of Williamsburg has given it a more polished edge in recent years. Its vintage shops, contemporary street art, and lively indie music scene are all a testament to the creative energy that endures today, however. The Williamsburg Hotel taps into the neighborhood’s storied past with its industrial steel and red-brick facade belying its Art-Deco approach to interior designs. A classy hipster vibe permeates through the property. The highlight here is the swanky rooftop pool and lounge, which offers al fresco dining, top-drawer cocktails, and unobstructed views of Manhattan across the East River unmatched anywhere in Williamsburg. The rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows that bathe the space in natural light but be sure to go for a terrace room if you want your own balcony from which to take advantage of the views of either Brooklyn or the New York skyline.

96 Wythe Avenue, Brooklyn Price: From $203

The Peninsula New York

the peninsula nyc hotels with skyline views

In the luxury hotel world, The Peninsula name is synonymous with quality. No other hotel group has been awarded Five-Star status by Forbes across all its locations. The Peninsula New York is another leading example of high-end service at its finest. With its Beaux Arts-style architectural style, primly garbed door staff, and limousine service, The Peninsula exudes all the trappings of classic New York while in the guestrooms and suites, the modern trimmings and surprising roominess give the impression of luxurious apartments. Escape the grip of the city with a few lengths of the tranquil glass-enclosed pool, then step out onto the sun terrace and soak up the views of Fifth Avenue. Meanwhile, the outstanding spa on the 21st floor is widely regarded as the best in the city (and with ten treatment rooms it’s certainly the biggest). But for all The Peninsula’s character and amenities, it’s the exceptional customer service and the attention to detail from the staff that keeps guests returning in droves.

How to see the Manhattan skyline by boat for less than $3

July 6, 2019 by Karen Turner 1 Comment

You’ve probably heard of the Staten Island ferry, the free ferry that runs between Manhattan and Staten Island. This ferry for tourists and locals is a great way to see the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan, but there are far more ferries than this line. This post will be introducing you to the New York Ferry system, the ferries with the best views, and why you should definitely take a boat ride to enjoy the Manhattan skyline.

If you’re from somewhere, it’s funny how you just don’t do new things until you push yourself out of your comfort zone. When I was back in New York, a friend and I were in Brooklyn when we noticed the ferry to Queens at the moment that we were considering a lengthy subway ride through Manhattan back to Queens. On an impulse, we bought a ticket for the ferry only to be wowed by the sunset over the Manhattan skyline.

skyline nyc travel

Although exploring Manhattan is always great, it’s even better to see the Manhattan skyline from the other boroughs. ( You can click here for a round-up of the best spots to enjoy the NYC skyline on land .) There’s nothing like New York’s impressive skyline seen by boat.

  • 1 About the New York City ferries
  • 2 The best New York City ferry routes to consider!
  • 3 Other tips for taking the NYC ferries
  • 4 Let me know what you thought of the New York City ferries!

About the New York City ferries

The New York City ferries are a separate transportation system from the MTA system (e.g. buses and subways ). It’s run privately and you can purchase your ticket using the machines at the stops using a card. You’ll find real-time schedules and tickets using the NYC ferry app. I’ll discuss the best NYC ferry routes for views of Manhattan below!

A New York ferry ticket (one-way) only costs $2.75 as of 2019, which is a steal given that many journies pass by some of the most famous buildings in New York City! (You can also bring a bike (or a Citi Bike) if you are renting a bike for the day.) This is a separate system from the Metrocard.

Empire State Building lit up at night seen from the New York City ferry

You might have seen offers for New York City boat cruises, such as the Circle line Sightseeing Cruise , that will show you the Manhattan skyline from the comforts of a boat that will cruise New York harbor. You’ll find similar tours below for those looking for an extended experience seeing the New York skyline. You can definitely do this for less if you’re creative…

The New York Harbor has long been an important place for New York as its deep harbor is the reason why many Europeans were able to land in New York. The first European to see it was Giovanni da Verrazzano. Henry Hudson famously explored the harbor and headed north in the hopes of discovering a route to the Northwest Passage. The port along New York Harbor was one of the most valuable ports in the colonies.

The best New York City ferry routes to consider!

Beautiful view of Manhattan at dusk with sunset hues seen from the NYC ferry from Brooklyn

After a lovely day exploring Downtown Brooklyn’s waterfront, I ended up taking the ferry from Dumbo at the Brooklyn Bridge Pier 1 towards Astoria . Astoria is a cool neighborhood with a rich history, great craft beer, and interesting attractions if you’re interested in getting off the beaten path. ( Click for my guide to Astoria ) This is such a great route as you pass underneath the Brooklyn Bridge, cruise past Midtown (including the Empire State Building), and even get to see the UN building as well as Roosevelt Island.

If you’re interested in exploring more of Brooklyn, I’d recommend taking same orange line towards Astoria to get off in cool Williamsburg and even more hipster Greenpoint to explore New York’s coolest bars and shops. Both are reachable by subway, but why not take the scenic route?

Another scenic NYC ferry route is the ferry from the main ferry stop at Wall Street (Pier 11). If you’re interested in panoramic views of Manhattan and New York in general, consider taking the purple line towards Soundview. Get off at East 90th Street during the day to explore the Upper East Side , one of New York’s most exclusive neighborhoods next to Central Park, and home to many filming locations from TV shows (including Gossip Girl).

The Staten Island Ferry is free and worth taking for stunning views of Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. You’ll need to wait about a half hour for the ferry to return, so I’d recommend browsing the new outlet mall next to the ferry terminal for amazing deals!

The ferry system is in the process of expanding to other areas of New York that can be harder to reach by subway, including Coney Island. I’d check the official app and website for updates on construction in 2020/2021.

Other tips for taking the NYC ferries

People boarding the New York City ferry from Brooklyn at sunset.

I strongly recommend bringing a jacket as it can be quite chilly with the wind. (You can click for my NYC packing list here .) We were mostly okay, but I was glad to have a sweater with me!

If you’re into photography, I recommend looking up when golden hour will occur, so that you can enjoy the sunset over Manhattan with the best lighting for photos. This is typically an hour before sunset and due to the ferry’s motion, it will be harder to shoot sunset photos once it gets dark. A DSLR will do well, but my phone camera struggled a bit!

There’s limited seating with tinted windows (which make for disappointing photos), but you’ll find a slightly steep staircase near the back of the boat where you can climb to the top deck for unobscured views without the tourist crowds!

We’ve been to NYC a few times in the past. But it’s been about 8-9 years. Our last time there we really went off the beaten path of typical and loved it more than ever. This blog is great and this idea on taking Ferries (as well as the information on neighborhoods – that’s what we did last time – is super helpful.

Also loved your clothing section.

I'm a travel writer in NYC – here are the questions I get asked the most

John Garry

Jul 11, 2024 • 8 min read

skyline nyc travel

This writer's happy place: Brooklyn Heights Promenade with these NYC skyline views James Andrews / Getty Images

What makes a real New Yorker? Some say you must be born in one of the five boroughs – I wasn't but I've lived here for 14 years, contributed to six Lonely Planet guidebooks on New York , and done everything New Yorkers complain about and covet...

I've snagged impossible restaurant reservations , seen Tony Award-winning shows long before they went to Broadway, fallen asleep on the subway (do not recommend), gotten caught in summer rain storms while biking along the Hudson River (actually invigorating) – and I don't hesitate to give cab drivers directions if I deem my route superior. I love this city with the uncomplicated clarity of Milton Glaser's “I Love NY” logo. NYC is in my DNA.

So with my NYC credentials established, here are six questions out-of-towners often ask me about experiencing the nation's most populous metropolis like a New York-or-nowhere urbanite.

St Marks Place, the main street in the famous East Village of New York City

Where should I stay in New York?

Location is king when it comes to lodging. Travel times between boroughs, and even parts of Manhattan, can take upwards of 30 minutes. Decide which neighborhood interests you most and pick a hotel in the area.

For something central, skip Midtown (its nonstop energy overwhelms) and look instead around the art and park-packed West Village or Chelsea – you’re still close to must-see Manhattan sites. The budget-friendly  Jane Hotel houses guests in ship-style rooms initially built for sailors in 1908 and is steps from Hudson River Park's piers and the elevated High Line promenade.

If you're into trendy bars, unique boutiques and a bit of edgy grit, opt for the Lower East Side. The  Public Hotel , created by Studio 54 co-founder Ian Schrager, sits where the Lower East Side intersects with shop-heavy Nolita.

Don't sleep on Brooklyn, either – plenty of well-appointed Williamsburg hotels overlook Midtown's skyline. Check out the  Wythe , a short subway ride from the borough's best nightlife venues and one stop away from Manhattan.

When low price points are paramount, try  Harlem Flophouse (shared bathrooms in a 19th-century townhouse) or Pod Brooklyn (compact rooms in Williamsburg). Avoid travel around major holiday weekends – you'll pay a premium – and look for deals during  Hotel Week from January through February.

Cyclist riding in a bike lane at the Park Row financial district.

What's the best way to get around NYC?

New York is a pedestrian town . You can take leisurely strolls around brownstone-lined blocks in the West Village and Brooklyn Heights, but the pace here is generally fast. New Yorkers use sidewalks for commuting and follow a set of unspoken rules: traffic flows to the right, walk no more than two people side-by-side and if you need to pause, step out of the way.

NYC's 24/7 subway system , operated by the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), is great for long distances – and though navigating the underground network can be confusing for newcomers, nearly all locals use it thanks to its low cost and efficiency. OMNY is the MTA's fare payment system. You don't need to download an app to use it; just tap a contactless bank card or smart device and go.

My preferred mode of transport is biking. The city has over 600 miles of protected bike lanes, and rolling around town lets you experience the shifting architectural landscape. Use  Citi Bike , NYC's bike share program, to join the pedal palooza (download the app; day passes cost $19) and obey traffic laws. Avoid cycling if you aren't confident on wheels – fellow cyclists and drivers can be aggressive.

The cost of cabs is prohibitive. Reserve rides for special occasions like late nights, torrential rain storms or if you have limited mobility.

For navigation, I usually use Google Maps, though the  Citymapper app shows even more ways to get around town – including ferries. You can hail and pay for cabs using the  Curb app and check when the next subway car arrives with  Subway Time NYC .

SP-and-Scarrs.jpeg

Where should I eat – and how do I get restaurant reservations?

NYC's foodscape has it all: Michelin-starred meals (try South Indian at  Semma ), old-school luncheonettes (stop by  S&P Lunch ), delicious vegetarian dives (eat everything at  Superiority Burger ), some of the tastiest pizza this side of the Atlantic (wait in line at  Scarr's ) and the best bagels in the world (head to  Absolute Bagels and dare to disagree). You can take a cheap dumpling-and-bun tour by strolling Bayard St in Chinatown and spend half a day grazing grub at  Smorgasburg – a seasonal al fresco food bazaar.

I tell everyone to try  Thai Diner in Nolita – it's a blast of Bangkok and a soupcon of greasy-spoon NYC, where you can gobble massaman curry disco fries while twirling on a swivel stool. If unsure where to go, I consult  the Infatuation – a trustworthy restaurant recommendation website.

When restaurants take reservations (usually through the  Resy app), I usually make one a few days to a week in advance. Popular spots – like seafood-forward  Sailor in Brooklyn – start taking reservations two weeks to a month prior, and if you want a table, it's imperative to act quickly. For assistance with hard-to-get reservations, download the  TableOne app , which sends alerts about openings at popular restaurants.

Another option for snagging in-demand tables: get to the restaurant at opening and put your name on a waitlist. If I don't have a reservation at Thai Diner, for instance, I'll join the waitlist and then grab a cocktail around the corner at  Little Rascal to pass the time. Occasionally, the stars align, and I'll snag a bar seat without waiting.

Cosmopolitan cocktail at a bar in New York.

Where should I go out for drinking and dancing?

If you want to bounce between cocktail joints with expert mixologists, base yourself around the East Village and Lower East Side. There's the kitschy speakeasy  PDT (enter through Crif Dogs), craft cocktail connoisseur  Attaboy , bitters-forward  Amor y Amargo , plus some exemplary spots for wine (try  Ruffian ) and beer (taste what's on tap at  Proletariat ).

North Brooklyn is best for breweries. Talea , a city chain with fruit-forward ales that started in Williamsburg, is NYC's first women-owned brew house.  Grimm Artisanal Ales makes juicy, funky flavors – plus they've got a rooftop with views.

When it's time to dance, head to industrial warehouses in East Williamsburg, Bushwick and Queens. For Berlin-style beats, try getting into  Basement at the Knockdown Center (the door policy is exclusive). You can hear indie bands and international DJs at  Elsewhere , and you can dance outdoors during the seasonal Mister Sunday party at  Nowadays — an uber-inclusive, queer-friendly EDM club. Pre-purchase tickets and search for events using the  Dice and  Resident Advisor apps.

Speaking of queer-forward spaces , you'll find some of the best in Hell's Kitchen (home of pretty boys and Broadway babies), Chelsea (the jockstrap-happy Eagle is Manhattan's hottest gay bar), the West Village (unpretentious  Julius' and femme-forward  Cubbyhole are favorites) and into East Williamsburg (dance at queer bar  3 Dollar Bill ; order craft cocktails at The Exley ).

Broadway theatres in Times Square New York city

What is the best way to see a Broadway show?

First, decide if there's something worth seeing. Only a handful of splashy musicals have staying power (The Book of Mormon, Hamilton, Wicked) – great for first-timers looking for a classic Broadway experience. Then there's a rotating roster of productions – like limited-run dramas and smaller musicals – which, when done well, offer fresher perspectives than long-running hits. Check reviews in the  New York Times and  Vulture for recommendations.

Theater tickets cost anywhere from $25 to $250 and up. If I'm adamant about seeing something (usually a buzzy New York Times  Critics' Pick ), I buy tickets on the  TodayTix app, which offers discounted pricing and digital lotteries.

If you're pinching pennies, try same-day digital rush and lottery programs – just remember you might end up empty-handed. (Scan Playbill's  cheat sheet for show-by-show policies.) There's also the Theatre Development Fund's  TKTS booth under Times Square's red steps, with up to 50% off same-day shows and next-day matinees. Try to arrive around 5pm, when theaters release extra tickets for upcoming performances.

Broadway isn't theater's end-all-be-all either. Off-Broadway is Broadway's creative incubator, with many of the same actors, directors and writers producing some of NYC's best work. Take a chance on shows playing at places like  Playwrights Horizons and the  Public Theater – you might be seeing New York's next big hit.

Pedestrians and cyclists on Brooklyn Bridge.

What can I do without breaking the bank?

As of 2024, Manhattan is the most expensive place to live in the US – but there are plenty of ways to enjoy NYC for free . Wander through Central Park's 843 acres; ride across New York Harbor on the  Staten Island Ferry for Statue of Liberty views; stroll the  Brooklyn Bridge ; see summer concerts in  Prospect Park ; catch the Public's  Shakespeare in the Park series. Plenty of museums offer free days, too. My favorite is the  Whitney Museum of American Art , which goes gratis on Fridays from 5pm-10pm and all day on the second Sunday of every month. (Jump to the permanent collection for paintings by Hopper, Warhol and more.) Many others are pay-what-you-wish, like the  Museum of the City of New York , which chronicles over 400 years of local history.

When it comes to dining, keep an eye out for happy hour specials (usually 4pm-7pm with select drinks and apps discounted), gorge yourself on $1.50 pizza slices from  2 Bros , order two tacos for $5 at  Los Tacos No. 1 , nosh a bodega BEC (bacon, egg and cheese) for roughly $6 or nab a plate of Indian street food for under $10 at  Punjabi Grocery & Deli .

My happy place

After grabbing an egg galette from  Poppy's , or a raspberry croissant from  L'Appartement 4F (depending on whether I'm digging savory or sweet), I love to amble along the  Brooklyn Heights Promenade – a 1826-ft pedestrian walkway with views that stretch from Lady Liberty to Lower Manhattan's skyscraper forest and up to the Empire State Building (and beyond).

A meteor streaked over the N.Y.C. skyline before disintegrating over New Jersey

A meteor streaked over the New York City skyline before disintegrating over nearby New Jersey, according to NASA.

William Cooke, the head of the space agency's Meteoroid Environments Office, said the fireball was first sighted at an altitude of 51 miles above Manhattan at around 11:17 a.m. Tuesday.

The meteor passed over the southern part of Newark, N.J., before disintegrating 31 miles above the town of Mountainside, he said. No meteorites or other fragments of space debris reached the planet's surface.

The space rock moved at a speed of about 41,000 mph and descended at a relatively steep angle of 44 degrees from vertical, Cooke said.

Its exact trajectory is uncertain, since reports are based only on eyewitness accounts and no camera or satellite data is currently available, he said.

As of Wednesday morning, there had been approximately 40 eyewitness reports filed on the American Meteor Society website, which the agency used to generate its estimates, Cooke said.

The fireball was not part of the Perseid meteor shower , and reports of loud booms and shaking could be explained by military aircraft in the vicinity around the time of its appearance, he said.

Cooke said the New York City area gets treated to a daylight fireball every year or two.

NASA’s Meteoroid Environments Office said in a Facebook post that small rocks like the one that produced Tuesday’s fireball are only about a foot in diameter and can’t remain intact all the way to the ground.

2,600+ US flights canceled: United, American Airlines resume service after global outage

  • A global IT outage caused delays and cancellations for air passengers around the world.
  • Several U.S. carriers, including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, issued ground stops for all their flights early on Friday due to communication problems.
  • The aviation sector is hit particularly hard due to its sensitivity to timings.

William Sikora III was supposed to fly from Philadelphia to Detroit on Friday morning.

“We are stuck at this airport,” he posted in a video on X at 6 a.m., zooming in on blue airport screens showing system errors. “United, Delta, America, all this stuff is down. People are just sitting here. The apps still say our flight’s on time because they can’t update information in the apps.”

Air passengers around the world faced delays, cancellations and problems checking in as airports and airlines were caught up in a  massive IT outage  that also affected industries ranging from banks to media companies.

Several U.S. carriers, including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, issued ground stops for all their flights early on Friday due to communication problems, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

There were over 2,600 flights canceled and nearly 9,200 delays as of 5 p.m. ET, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware . Most airlines were able to resume operations as the morning progressed, but many said they expected disruptions to continue throughout the day.

More on the outage: Global tech outage grounds flights, hits banks and media businesses

Megan Brown said Washington Dulles Airport was surprisingly calm, even as the airline industry was in turmoil. She said the airport was less crowded than usual, making for a quicker-than-expected security screening, and passengers seemed understanding about the disruptions.

"We just took the gamble and came here, and hopefully we’ll leave today,” Brown told USA TODAY by phone from Dulles. “There’s nothing you can do.”

Her family's 8:25 a.m. ET flight to San Francisco was delayed, but they were able to take off within a couple of hours. "A cheer just erupted as the gate agent said we are going to start boarding," she said.

Around the world, airports and airlines advised customers to arrive earlier than normal for flights.

Around 9 a.m. Sikora posted another video showing fellow travelers sitting on the floor and standing in the middle of a crowded Philadelphia International Airport terminal.

“Everyone is in the same boat. Just wandering and sitting,” he told USA TODAY.

Issues online: Instagram may be the best social app to get your flight issues fixed. Here's why.

The cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike blamed the global tech outage on a defect in an update for Microsoft Windows hosts.

“Today was not a security or cyber incident. Our customers remain fully protected," Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz posted on X . "We understand the gravity of the situation and are deeply sorry for the inconvenience and disruption. We are working with all impacted customers to ensure that systems are back up and they can deliver the services their customers are counting on. As noted earlier , the issue has been identified and a fix has been deployed. There was an issue with a Falcon content update for Windows Hosts."

The aviation sector was hit particularly hard due to its sensitivity to timings. Airlines rely on a closely coordinated schedule often run by air traffic control. Just one delay of a few minutes can throw off a flight schedule for take-offs and landings for an airport and airline for the rest of the day.

"The issue affected many separate systems, such as those used for calculating aircraft weight, checking in customers, and phone systems in our call centers," United Airlines said in a statement. "After pausing all departures overnight, flights resumed on Friday morning and we are working diligently to get our customers to their destinations."

Story continues below.

Are flights still grounded? How long will flight delays last?

"Ground stops and delays will be intermittent at various airports as the airlines work through residual technology issues," the FAA said, adding that it's working closely with airlines to resume normal operations.

Travelers are advised to contact their airlines and monitor the FAA's website for the latest information.

How to find the reason for flight delay

Customers can ask airlines why their flight is canceled or delayed, but the Department of Transportation confirmed that it considers the delays and cancellations caused by Friday's IT outage to be "controllable" by the airlines. While airlines may say they didn't cause the computer error, it means that the DOT will hold them responsible for upholding the commitments they've made to customers when it comes to policies like rebooking or hotel and meal vouchers as the mess gets sorted out. Every airline's policy is outlined on the DOT customer service dashboard.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics also tracks causes of delays and cancellations.

Airline waivers

Airlines are doing what they can to provide extra flexibility to those affected by the outage.

  • American issued a waiver for affected travelers covering all of its U.S. hubs.
  • Delta issued a waiver allowing all passengers traveling Friday to rebook their flights.
  • Frontier issued a waiver offering rebooking for travelers whose flights were delayed by more than 3 hours. Customers whose flights were canceled may opt for a refund or credit toward future travel.
  • United issued a waiver for select airports so passengers can make changes if their flights are affected, though a United spokesperson told USA TODAY that nearly all of the airline's flights depart or arrive in one of the airports covered by the waiver.
  • Spirit issued a waiver allowing customers who are booked to fly Friday or Saturday through any airport in its network to change their flights at no additional charge.

What happens if my flight is canceled?

Department of Transportation rules  require all airlines to offer customers a refund if their flights are canceled for any reason, but customers may be entitled to additional compensation if a cancellation is within the airline's control.

What should I do if my flight is delayed?

If your flight is experiencing a long delay, the Transportation Department suggests asking airline staff if they will pay for meals or a hotel room.

The DOT dashboard reflects airlines' official policies, but many carriers handle compensation for delays on a case-by-case basis and may provide vouchers or other benefits in some situations that are not formally covered.

What is considered a significant flight delay?

Each airline defines significant delays differently, but the DOT's dashboard identifies which airlines provide compensation for controllable delays of 3 or more hours.

For instance, all major U.S. carriers are supposed to provide a meal voucher for flights delayed by at least 3 hours for reasons within their control. Additionally, Alaska, JetBlue and Southwest offer credit or a travel voucher when a controllable delay "results in passenger waiting for 3 hours or more from the scheduled departure time," according to the dashboard.

How to file compensation for a delayed flight

Travelers seeking monetary compensation for delayed flights should file a claim with their respective airlines. Passengers seeking other types of compensation, like frequent flyer miles, may be able to request those through the airline's customer service.

NEW YORK (AP) — A meteor streaked over the New York City skyline before disintegrating over nearby New Jersey, according to NASA.

William Cooke, the head of the space agency’s Meteoroid Environments Office, said the fireball was first sighted at an altitude of 51 miles (82 kilometers) above Manhattan at around 11:17 a.m. Tuesday.

The meteor passed over the southern part of Newark, New Jersey, before disintegrating 31 miles (50 kilometers) above the town of Mountainside, he said. No meteorites or other fragments of space debris reached the planet’s surface.

The space rock moved at a speed of about 41,000 mph (66,000 kph) and descended at a relatively steep angle of 44 degrees from vertical, Cooke said.

Airlines raced on Friday to contain the effects of a tech outage that severely disrupted travel around the world early in the day, delaying or stranding passengers and flight crews.

The outage, which affected many industries and emergency services, caused chaos at airports, with more than half of flight cancellations concentrated in the United States, one of the busiest aviation markets in the world. The industry appeared to be getting a handle on the disruption on Friday afternoon, but its effects could ripple into the weekend.

More than 2,400 flights across the country were canceled on Friday and thousands more were delayed, according to FlightAware, a company that tracks flight information. Airports serving large cities, such as New York City, Chicago and Atlanta, were among the hardest hit.

There were about 110,000 commercial flights scheduled worldwide on Friday, according to Cirium, an aviation data company. A quarter were set to depart from U.S. airports, carrying up to 3.7 million passengers.

As the sun rose over the East Coast, major carriers, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, had paused flights. Each had begun to restart operations by around 9 a.m. Eastern time, scrambling to minimize the reverberating effects of the earlier delays and cancellations.

“Travelers, we’re working with airlines to closely monitor the global I.T. issue that could continue to affect flights this weekend,” the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement on social media.

The agency said none of its systems, including those at its air traffic control operations, were affected by technology outages.

American said in a statement that it had been able to “safely reestablish” its operation as of 5 a.m. Delta and United said flights had resumed in the morning. Several carriers said they would waive fees and fare differences or offer refunds.

But a Transportation Department representative said airlines might be obligated to go further and provide travelers with ground transportation, as well as accommodation to those affected by overnight cancellations.

At Denver International Airport, large screens where arrivals and departures would usually be displayed were flashing blue error messages, leaving some passengers confused and uneasy.

Frank Tingley, a 42-year-old data analyst, was among the thousands of travelers stranded at that airport.

“I’m not good, actually,” he said, adding that he first noticed an issue when airport staff had difficulties scanning tickets for his flight to Boston Logan International Airport.

Mr. Tingley said he was initially allowed to board the plane but after further complications and delays, passengers were told to get off.

“The general mood is that people are finding a quiet corner and just trying to hunker down,” he said.

An anxious scene played out late Friday morning at Albany International Airport as airline passengers who arrived after the earlier delays rushed to find their bags and used cellphones to put their plans back in order.

At a gate where an American Airlines flight to Charlotte, N.C., would soon board, passengers swapped stories and sought help from two airline agents who worked quickly to untangle their routes.

The airline employees seemed to succeed in some cases. But not everyone would arrive to where they were going before night fell. A man and woman with two children who were headed to Los Angeles discussed where to spend the night in Charlotte.

The outage affected several airline systems.

For United, that included those used to calculate aircraft weight, check in customers and manage call center phones. At Taoyuan International, Taiwan’s largest airport, and Hong Kong International Airport, airline agents had to manually check passengers in. In India, some airlines issued handwritten boarding passes because they couldn’t print them or issue them digitally.

In South Korea, Jeju Air, which flies to dozens of Asian and Pacific destinations, said on its website that a number of services, including flight reservations, were disrupted. Air Premia said its reservations and online check-in systems were not working normally, and urged passengers flying to San Francisco and Newark to arrive at Seoul’s Incheon airport as soon as possible.

Planes already in the sky were able to continue to their destinations.

Some airlines were hardly affected. Alaska Airlines, the nation’s fifth-largest carrier, canceled only a handful of flights on Friday because it did not use the CrowdStrike software that caused the outage, a spokeswoman, Tricia Bruckbauer, said in a statement.

“We are working hard to accommodate as many impacted guests from other airlines onto our flights, and we’re grateful to our teams for taking great care in keeping guests moving,” she said.

The delays and cancellations were expected to have a cascading effect because airport landing slots and support staff were limited, and crews often worked several trips in a day.

When flights are canceled, pilots and flight attendants may be late to their next assigned trips, or unable to make them altogether, requiring airlines to assign backup crews. Aviation regulations also limit how many hours crews can work at a stretch, including time spent waiting at airports. That can force airlines to find and assign other pilots and attendants to take over, leading to further delays.

Carriers routinely deal with last-minute changes; they appeared to be limiting the effects of the disruption on Friday. But such widespread outages can quickly spiral out of control for even the most prepared airlines.

The industry has had similarly large disruptions earlier this year. Bad weather forced U.S. airlines to scrap more than 3,100 flights on Jan. 15, the worst day for cancellations this year so far, according to FlightAware. On average, about 320 flights were canceled per day this year, while another 5,200 were delayed.

Over the winter holidays in late 2022, Southwest Airlines suffered a major disruption when it was unable to cope with severe weather at airports in Denver and Chicago. The airline, one of the nation’s largest, ended up canceling nearly 17,000 flights — more than a third of those scheduled — over the last 10 days of the year. That episode cost Southwest more than $1 billion.

On Friday, however, Southwest appeared relatively unscathed: While hundreds of its flights were delayed, only a handful had been canceled.
