How to move multiple tabs to a new window in Safari, Chrome, and Firefox

In this brief tutorial, we will share a quick browser tip that lets you select multiple tabs in Safari, Google Chrome, or Firefox and move them to a separate window.

MacBook web browser with Firefox, Safari, and Chrome app icons

Imagine you are doing research for a university college paper and have opened several tabs in your favorite web browser on Mac . However, now you notice that about six tabs are useful but not related to the topic you’re working on. In this case, you can select all those six tabs and move them to a new window in one swoop.

The steps to do this are similar for all popular Mac browsers, including Apple’s Safari, Google Chrome , and Mozilla Firefox . They should not be different even if you use some other browser.

Select multiple browser tabs and move them into a separate window

  • Open Safari , Chrome , or Firefox where you have a bunch of open tabs.
  • Take a glance at the tabs on the top of the browser window and decide which ones you will move to their separate window. After that, hold the command key on your Mac’s keyboard and select all the tabs .
  • Release the command key.
  • Drag the tabs out of the current window to move them to a new window.

And it’s that easy!

Remember that you can also use the above tip to merge multiple tabs with an existing window. All you need to do is select the tabs while holding the command key and then drag and drop them carefully on an existing browser window.

As a final tip, if you have too many open windows in Safari, you can click Window from the top menu bar and select Merge All Windows .

Tip: Moving a single Safari window into the tabs of another window

One missing feature in Safari is being able to consolidate specific windows into the tabs of one window. Safari has options to do this for all windows, but not for individual windows.

safari move tab to another window

One of Safari's useful functions is being able to manage tabs either by organizing them in the same window, or by dragging them off into their own windows. Though this allows for some organization, one missing feature is being able to consolidate specific windows into the tabs of one window. Safari has options to do this for all windows, but not for individual windows.

To consolidate all windows into the tabs of the foremost window, just select "Merge all windows" from Safari's "Window" menu. If, however, you want to move a specific window into the tabs of another one, it can be done, but it takes a couple of more steps.

The key to doing this is to treat all windows as tabs, which can be done either by showing the tab bar at all times (press Shift-Command-T), or by creating a new tab in a window that has none (press Command-T).

With the window contents available as tabs, you can drag the desired tab from one browser window to another one, even if the destination window does not have tabs enabled. When you drop it, Safari will insert it as a tab in the target window.

Move multiple Safari macOS tabs to a new window

One of the neat things with browsers such as Firefox is that you can select multiple tabs in a window, right click, and move them to a new window. Very useful if you have a lot of tabs and want to split some out. In Safari on macOS however, you can’t do that. You can right click a single tab and move it to a new window, or you can drag a tab each to a new or existing window, but there’s no way to select multiple tabs and move them out. I usually drag tabs one by one, but that’s a hassle as I have to put the new window side by side or next to the existing window and then drag and drop. I don’t like moving my windows around much coz I like the position at which I have organised them.

Today I discovered a workaround by accident. Either left click a tab and move it all the way to the left, or right click a tab and pin tab. Unlike other browsers, when you pin a tab in Safari it is pinned on all windows (which can sometimes be useful but is usually irritating and confusing – to me at least). This feature is useful in my current scenario however, because now I can open a new window or go to whichever window I wanted to move these tabs into, right click the pinned tab there and unpin it. Yes I have to do it one by one, but at least I don’t have to drag tabs around or move windows. When I unpin the tab on the destination window, it automatically disappears from all other windows. Nice!

Can I move a tab in Safari with a keyboard shortcut?

In Safari, with multiple tabs open, I want to be able to change the order of the tabs with a keyboard shortcut.

For example, if the third tab of four is active:

…how can I move the third tab to the second spot, without using the mouse/trackpad ?

Note: I'm not asking how to switch which tab is active. I want to change the order of the tabs within a browser window.

I'd like to be able to do this without installing a plugin or browser extension, if possible.

Hello CPL5938.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you'd like to know if it's possible to select multiple tabs and move them all at once to a new tab group or an already created tab group. If so, allow us to share some information with you.

According to the resource below:

Use tabs in Safari on iPhone - Apple Support

It mentions that you have to touch and hold a tab and then choose to move them to a tab group. It doesn't mention the ability to select multiple tabs at once. You might want to leave feedback for Apple on things they can change and update below:

We hope this information is useful. Cheers.

The Internet is Not Forever, So It's Time to Preserve What You Can

I paid for google's drive storage. here's why i don't regret it, cut your presentation time down with the pechakucha method.

Many web browsers allow you to sync tabs between devices. For example, Chrome on the desktop syncs with Chrome on your phone, etc. But what about syncing between different browsers? That's a little harder to do, but it's not impossible.

Apple Safari , Google Chrome , Mozilla Firefox , and Microsoft Edge all support syncing tabs across devices in their own way. However, that's not helpful if you use Firefox at work and Chrome at home. They can't talk to each other.

Related: How to Sync Microsoft Edge Tabs Across Devices

"Tab Session Manager" is an open-source extension that works with Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. It allows you to sync open tabs and windows between these different browsers. We'll show you how it works.

First, you'll need to download the extension for Chrome , Edge , or Firefox . Install it on all the browsers you want to sync together. The setup process is going to be the same on every browser.

Once the Tab Session Manager has been installed, open it from the extensions menu in your browser.

The Tab Session Manager window will open. Click the gear icon to begin setting it up.

There's a lot happening on the Settings page, but we're not going to be messing with all of it. First, give the device a name and check the "Save Device Name to Session" box. This will help identify where the tabs are from.

Next, make sure that "Save the Session Regularly" is checked. You can adjust how frequently you want the tabs to be synced and how many sessions will be stored at a time.

You can also set it so that the tabs are synced when you close a window or exit the browser. How much you have things synced is up to you.

The key ingredient to making this work between different browsers is cloud sync. By signing in with your Google account, you allow sessions to be backed up to your Google Drive and made available on other browsers.

Click "Sign in with Google" to proceed.

A message will inform you that Tab Session Manager is requesting permissions. Using this feature does require you to make some privacy sacrifices. Click "Allow" if you are fine with that.

Google's account sign-in window will open. Select your Google account and proceed to enter your credentials.

During sign-in, you'll be asked to grant Tab Session Manager permission to view and manage the data it creates in your Google Drive. Click "Allow."

That's all you need to do to set up tab syncing. Repeat these steps in every browser where you want to access the tabs.

To use Tab Session Manager, simply click the extension icon from the browser toolbar. You may need to click the sync button on the first launch.

Since we named each browser, you can easily see where the tabs are from. The title of each session is the active tab. Click a session to see all of the tabs to the right.

That's all there is to it. You may occasionally need to click the sync button to force an update, and it will ask you to sign back in to Google after a while. This may not be as simple as a built-in method, but it works if you use multiple browsers.

How to use Safari Tab Groups

If you’re a safari user, tab groups can help you keep your life organized and your desktop clean..

If you’re using Safari but you’re not using Tab Groups, well, it’s time to change that.

Tab Groups, as the name implies, allows you to group a selection of tabs together and essentially set them aside for future use. For example, if you have a bunch of tabs you use for work and a bunch of tabs you use after work, you can cordon these tabs off into batches so that they don’t get in each other’s way. You can use your work tabs at work and, when you’re finished, swap them for your “after work” tabs with just one click.

  • How to use Microsoft Edge’s new tab groups feature

You might also have different Tab Groups for different assignments at work or different school projects. Folks who share a computer might have different Tab Groups for each user. The possibilities are endless.

Here’s how to create a tab group in Safari.

How to create Safari Tab Groups on macOS

There are a couple of ways to do this. The easiest method is to make a group out of whatever tabs you currently have open. If you’re about to close Safari but think you might need to pick up where you left off when you open it later, throwing your tabs into a group can give you some peace of mind.

You can also create a tab group from scratch if there is a batch of tabs you think you might want to use later. This is a bit more time-consuming but will allow you to be more selective about which tabs to include.

A screenshot of Safari on macOS with New Tab Group with 2 Tabs selected.

To create a tab group from existing tabs

  • In Safari, click the down arrow in the toolbar. (It’s on the left side, next to the button that opens the sidebar.)
  • Pick New Tab Group With [X] Tabs .
  • In the left column, look for the Tab Group subhead. Name your tab group, then press Enter.

A screenshot of Safari on macOS with a tab selected and Move to Tab Group highlighted.

To create a tab group from scratch

  • Click the down arrow in the toolbar. (It’s next to the button that opens the sidebar.)
  • Pick New Empty Tab Group .
  • Name your tab group, then press enter.
  • Right-click a tab you want to add to the group, click Move to Tab Group , and select the tab group you want. Alternatively, you can click and drag the tab to your group on the left side.

To open your new tab group

  • Click on that down arrow again.
  • Click on the tab group you want.

Once you’ve got a group up and running, it’s not set in stone. You can adjust the makeup of a given tab group by clicking the arrow to its right in the sidebar’s tab group list. Right-click any tab that comes up, and you’ll have the option to remove it from the group, remove all tabs that aren’t it from the group, or move it to a different group,

You can also click the three dots just next to the arrow if you want to rename, delete, or share the group, along with other options.

How to create Safari Tab Groups on iOS

Tab Groups can sync between iOS and macOS devices, so if you create one on your Mac computer, you can still access it on your iPhone. Nevertheless, if it’s more convenient for you to create these from the Safari app on iOS, you can certainly do so.

A screenshot of Safari on iOS with a tab long-pressed and Move to Tab Group selected.

  • In the Safari app, click the tabs button on the bottom right. (It’s the one with two squares.)
  • Press and hold a tab you want to add, then pick Move to Tab Group .
  • Select New Tab Group .
  • Name your new group.

Hi Gang MAC OS 12.6 2021 Intel iMAC I just noticed when clicking and dragging my tabs and attempting to move them to a new safari window to try and organize them better, they just disappeared when I released them onto the tab bar of the new window. Is there a bug? Am I not remembered how to do it correctly? etc etc

Thanks! Looks like a similar but slightly different scenario for the same bug. so, moving tabs from window to window seems to be very broken. Ugh. such a basic/useful feature too.

Yes, I used to use this feature a lot, and now I’m desperately waiting for the fix. It’s really annoying.

To be honest I've been using the 16.1 betas on Monterey and the issue wasn't fixed at all. I really don't know if the issue is fixed on the stable, but my impression is that the issue with the tabs is not fixed at all. What worries me is that @eflx is saying that in Ventura the issue isn't fixed either. I was thinking that perhaps was an issue specific to Monterrey / Big Sur because safari had some changes to adapt to Ventura that caused the issue on the previous release… but it seems that it not the case. I don't know why Apple is not more careful with this. Have you reported this? I have a call with a senior advisor related to a Mail app issue and I probably will also mention this. The only way to get this issue fixed is to nag Apple about them.

Is there any chance you are working with tabs in a tab group? If so, it seems a likely contributor to the bug. All the windows stay synchronized when modifying tabs in a tab group. If I'm dragging from one window to another (and doing so within one or two tab groups), both windows have to go through two changes simultaneously, adding a tab and removing a tab. Concurrent changes often result in bugs due to the randomness of timing.

Have never bothered to make use of tab groups myself

Monterey Safari 16.1 user here. This is definitely not fixed, and is nearly the most annoying bug I've ever encountered on my Mac. You cannot move tabs between windows without losing them. I used to do this all the time between the window on my MacBook and the window on my external display. Now I have to cut the URL from one tab, close the tab, open a new tab on the other window, and paste in the URL. It's ridiculous and it's driving me nuts.

I've also noticed that Safari 16.1 doesn't load the favicons of some websites any more. I find that annoying, too, because the little icons are quite helpful to quickly find a tab. I've tried emptying all caches, but the issue persisted.

How to Group Tabs in Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox

Quick links, how to group tabs in google chrome, how to group tabs in edge, how to group tabs in firefox, how to group tabs in safari.

  • Group tabs in Chrome by right-clicking any tab, selecting Add tab to new group , and naming/color-coding it for easy management.
  • Edge allows tab grouping by right-clicking a tab or using the Tab actions menu for suggested groups.
  • Firefox lacks built-in tab grouping, but the Simple Tab Groups add-on helps create, hide, and manage tab groups efficiently.
  • Safari keeps it simple with a dropdown menu, followed by creating a new group.

If you're a tab hoarder, tab groups are the best way to organize your browsing experience, so it's time to learn how to group tabs in the most popular browsers: Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox.

Grouping tabs in Google Chrome is quite easy. To do so, right-click on any tab you want to add to a tab group. Select Add tab to new group and then name and color code your tab group. This helps you manage tab groups when you have multiple groups open.

To add more tabs to an existing group, drag and drop them near the tab group. Alternatively, right-click the tab you want to add to the group, click on Add tab to group , hover your mouse over it, and select the tab group where you want to add it.

If you use the same set of tabs frequently (perhaps for work), you can save the tab group in Chrome by right-clicking the tab group name in the tab bar and turning Save group on. Essentially, it is a bookmark of different tabs that you can access with a single click, and the saved tab group appears on your bookmark bar.

Like Chrome, Edge also lets you group tabs by right-clicking any tab and selecting Add tab to new group . In the same way, you can drag and drop tabs (once you've created a group) to add or remove them from the group.

However, Edge also offers another simpler way to group tabs. Click on the Tab actions menu icon (in the top-left corner) and select Organize Tabs . Edge then shows suggested tab groups, giving each of them a suitable name. If you need to change the tab groups, you can drag them into/out of the group. Then, click Group tabs , and voilà, your tabs are organized.

If you can't see the Tab actions menu, go to edge://settings/appearance, scroll down to Customize Toolbar, and turn on the Show tab actions menu .

Unfortunately, Firefox does not have a built-in feature for grouping tabs, so you'll have to resort to add-ons to manage multiple tabs in Firefox . Though there are several add-ons you can try, Simple Tab Groups is quite a popular and handy one.

Download: Simple Tab Groups for Firefox (Free)

Once you've downloaded the add-on, right-click any tab, select Move tab to the group , and then Create new group . Name the tab group and move all related tabs to the group.

Simple Tab Groups hides the grouped tabs from your window to declutter the screen. To access tab groups, click the extension icon and select Simple Tab Groups . From here, you can create new tab groups or click any existing tab group to open it. Right-clicking the group name shows more options, like discarding, exporting, or opening tabs in a new window.

You can also create a new group by clicking the extension icon , selecting Simple Tab Groups , and choosing Create new group .

Pin the extension to the toolbar to open tab groups quickly.

To create a tab group in Safari , follow these steps.

  • Click the down icon (next to the sidebar icon) and select New Empty Tab Group if you don't want to add any tab to the group for now.
  • If you already have tabs open, you can select New Tab Group with X Tabs to add all the open tabs to the newly-created group.
  • Once you've created a tab group, Safari lets you rename it to your liking.
  • You can also access the option to create a tab group by clicking on File .

Once you've organized all the tabs into groups, click the down arrow (beside the sidebar icon) to see all the different tab groups and select the one you want to open.
