One Direction is an English-Irish pop band that was formed in 2010 by Simon Cowell on the British television show “The X Factor”. The group consists of members: Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson.

After each member of One Direction individually auditioned for the 2010 series of the “The X Factor”, the boys were grouped together by talent scout Simon Cowell to form the band One Direction. While the band failed to win the British talent show, the boys won a lot of fans and did secure third place on the show. More impressive, though, is that the boys went on to win the hearts of teenage girls all over the world soon after the show’s end.

One Direction is responsible for causing a second-wave British pop invasion in the US after their hit singles “What Makes You Beautiful", "Live While We're Young" and "Story of My Life" all became top 10 singles on the US album charts. One Direction also holds the record for being the first band to have each of their first three albums, “Up All Night”, “Take Me Home” and “Midnight Memories”, debut at number one on the US Billboard chart.

One Direction’s sudden and meteoric rise to fame has been the result of an extensive social media following. The band is one of the first to have achieved such extensive fame solely through the use of online social media platforms. This, combined with each of the boy’s fun loving yet individualistic image has breathed new life into the boy band pop genre and built an empire worth over $50 million.

The band has toured extensively across the globe, with their songs’ energetic choruses and the boys’ cheeky stage presences constantly winning more and more devoted fans. With further material always in the works, it seems that One Direction’s star will continue to rise for some time to come.

Live reviews

One Direction's performance was spectacular. Even though One Direction was the main event, their opening performances were a great hit. Jamie Scott and 5 Seconds of Summer really know how to please a crowd, especially when they are all so good looking. The stage was massive and had many great features including moving parts, lights, confetti, and two huge HD screens so that every part of the audience is able to see the boys clearly at all times. One Direction came out with so much energy and enthusiasm, and because it was Niall's birthday, he came out with balloons attached to him while playing the guitar and singing.

The boys interacted with the fans and even asked if it was anyone's birthday. They sang like angels and even showed off some dance moves. The boys had a great set list for their concert, with most of their songs being the more recent ones. One Direction looked great, which isn't a surprise, because they always look fabulous. One Direction moved around the stage and had a nice graphic background at all times, they even had picture lyrics for a song. The boys introduced their band and each member played a little bit of a song, and the boys jumped in, as well as the audience and sang along.

Just when you thought that the best night of your life was over, One Direction came back out for their encore to sing some of their most popular songs. The encore was massive and left you amazed. There were fireworks here and there throughout the show, but the encore had a so many, which made for great pictures. Each of the boys said their goodbyes and told the audience to stay safe while going home.

One Direction has grown so much and have become such a big hit all around the globe. The boys are always thanking their fans for all their support and everything that they've done to help them with their career. One Direction will continue to become bigger, especially with their amazing songs and albums, performances, and their dedication to their fans.

Don't be surprised if you lose your voice the next day from screaming out their names and singing their songs. Be sure to take lots of pictures and videos, because you will want to relive your One Direction concert experience forever. One Direction really knows how to give an amazing performance. Look out for Harry, Niall, Louis, Liam, and Zayn, because they are taking the world by storm.

One Direction was truly one of the best concerts I've been to and I truly mean it. I say it a lot, but I mean it this time. When Zayn announced his departure, I was not sure if One Direction would sound the same without him, but they pulled it off! I saw them at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara and the crowd was pumped and ready for the show to begin.

I was standing in the merchandise line while their opening act Icona Pop came on and I watched them from the TV's spread throughout the stadium. Although I missed half of their set, the last few songs were catchy and got me dancing. They delivered a great set and it got me excited for One Direction. Between the two sets, there was about a 20 minute in between.

When it was One Direction's turn to come out on stage, there was a little video that played before the boys came out themselves. Then, smoke comes out from the stage and the boys come out with fireworks coming out from the stage. The arena literally erupts with screaming and they begin their set with their song "Clouds". They had 25 songs in their whole setlist and they were all completely energetic throughout the whole concert. The fans had a project where we held up papers during You and I (it was supposed to be during Fireproof but they didn't have that song on their setlist) that says "Nobody saves me baby the way you do" with a picture of one of the boys with angel wings. My mom and aunt enjoyed the whole concert by the look of it and so were other parents/adults. There were people of all ages at the concert and it seemed that everyone enjoyed it.

One Direction's encore consisted of "You and I", "Act My Age", "Little White Lies" and their last song "Best Song Ever". I was so sad that the concert actually ended because it felt so surreal.

I would recommend going to a One Direction, regardless if you are a die hard fan or not because I am sure you will have a great time. Their singing was great, they kept me and my family entertained, and overall, they're angels. I will never forget this concert and I hope the boys continue to make people this happy.

One Direction took me to a different world last night! Their huge stage, fun props and great personalities made for an unforgettable night!

Their opening act, 5 Seconds of Summer, were perfect for getting the crowd pumped and ready! Their rock inspired performance was a great way to start the night, it made you want to sing at the top of your lungs and dance till you couldn't dance any longer. After 5 SOS had finished rocking the stage, we jammed out to great music. Even the intermission was a blast and the crowd danced and sang along to the fun, upbeat music!

Up next was the anticipated performance from the boys of 1D! You could feel the energy in the roar of the crowd and couldn't help but join and scream like a little girl! When the boys came on, it was like nothing I've ever experienced, the crowd went wild and you could feel the energy and excitement through your whole body! Even the stadium shook in excitement with us. They came out with a bang, singing a song from their new album, "Midnight Memories". The upbeat, rock felt song was a perfect intoduction to a spectacular show!

I was completely captivated through out the entire performance! There was not a single dull moment. The boys did an excellent job with transitioning from song to song and keeping the crowd pumped. Not only did they keep the crowd engaged in the show but they made it personal by interacting with the crowd by making jokes and talking to us!

I would recomend everyone to go and see One Direction! Fan or not you will enjoy the high energy performance and the fun stage and props! So if you're on the fence about going, go! You won't regret it!

One direction. They were excellent. Not only them but even the opening act. I haven't been to a stadium concert since green day 2010. One direction was very personal to the crowd "SHOUT OUT TO WILL FOR BEING A GOOD BROTHER!" I remember Harry styles saying. Then he sang Brianna happy birthday. She cried so hard.

I will say a downer is being in the upper stands for seating in the Cardinals arena. It's understandable they can't just come out and sing to our faces but it's unfortunate they don't try. Lol. The fact they really are appreciative of the fans and of the support is what really brings them down to earth. Some might think "no they're be too thankful it's annoying they're doing it for cheers and whatever!" No. They are really thankful. How often do you hear of an X Factor group who didn't even win be known across the globe? At least I don't hear it too often.

These boys whether the know it or not are really good. Good at heart and good at what they do. If I could meet them it would be an honor. I wouldn't cry and scream like most. But I'd take it to heart to know that I met LEGITABLY AWESOME people.

Even if they break up as a singing group they'll be legends. They really rocked it last night and same with 5SOS. I don't even know all their names (EXCELT LUKE! I like luke:) ) but I know their music and it rocks hard. They sound so good live. They make the perfect team, 1D and 5SOS. It was a moment to live for. My first 1D concert and my sister's first concert concert. She's only twelve and she's been dying to see one direction. So thank you ALL for your existence.

OMG I had the best time at the One Direction concert!!! It was like all my dreams were coming true!!! My experience before the concert started was crazy!!! So I went with my best friend to the concert and we spend like 10 min trying to find out seats because this time we were in the 100's and not the 200's so when we asked the usher where are seats were he said row five, so my friend thought he meant five rows from the top!!! So probably ten minutes before Icona Pop preformed, the usher came to us with two other girls and told us we were in the wrong seats, so we got nervous because we were like "shit we have to move back" and we already thought that we were so close!!! So the usher asked for our tickets and after he read them, he's like "Your seats are down there in row five"!!!! After that me and my friend flipped out and I almost fainted because I love them so much and it was a dream come true to go to this concert!!! My family doesn't have much money so when my friend found out that they were going on tour again, she bought me the tickets for my birthday!!!! So I wouldn't of been there if it wasn't for her!!! Then we made a promise to each other that for the next concert we were going to do whatever it takes to get tickets to the meet and greet and front row tickets!!! So we are going to be holding some fundraiser to help pay for the tickets because I would do anything for a chance to meet Louis Tomlinson!!!! But thank you One Direction for changing my life around!!! I definitely wouldn't be in this place in my life right now if it wasn't for you guys!!! Luv ya!!!

So this was my fourth time seeing One Direction live and oh it was beautiful. I feel like every time I see them live they get better and better. My seats were right next to the runway and sound booth so I had a perfect view of the whole stage. Since it was outside the acoustics were perfect and you can hear everything even though there were 90,000 something girls screaming their heads off.

Every time the boys played a song you can just feel the floor shake and the bass just vibrate through your body. Surprisingly the boys were very interactive with the audience even though their were so many girls in the crowd freaking out for their attention, me being one of them.Zayn waved at me, then Harry and Liam basically hip thrusted in my direction.

These boys really know how to work the stage they kept running up and down and just were idiots and on top of that their voices were on point. They sound way better live then they do on their own CD. It was honestly the best show I've ever seen a band give.

On top of their amazing voices and hip thrusting they had the coolest graphics and stage design I've ever seen. The stage just looks like a big playground basically. I'm so happy I got to see them again and have such amazing seats because it was one of their best shows. They all had smile on their faces, especially Niall since it was his birthday, you can just tell these boys love what they do.

I can't wait till next year because I'm defiantly am going again. These boys don't disappoint!

When I heard One Direction's new album Four in November 2014, I knew it would be an amazing album to hear live. I asked for tickets for Christmas and I got them! I was told my seats were amazing but i never saw them until the day of the show. They were the closest I've ever been to my favorite celebrity.

When we got there (my concert was at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) there were a lot of people but we still stood in line to get shirts and stuff. When we were finally down to our field seating to watch the opening act I had a heart attack. We were so close to the stage! We were maybe twenty feet away and I was on the end seat. It made for some great pictures!

The opening act was Icona Pop. I only knew two of the songs but I still enjoyed it and the dancers were fantastic. During the opening act, we all went to the bathroom and made new friends with the people around us.

Finally the concert started. I'd never been more excited in my life. I told myself I wouldn't cry but the second I heard Harry Styles busting out his first note in clouds it was like Niagara Falls. The entire rest of the show was amazing even without Zayn. There were fireworks and lasers and all that jazz. I made eye contact with Louis and Harry a few times and Liam waved to me. When Harry threw his water bottle, we all got splashed. This goes down as the best night of my life so far.

When I first knew One Direction coming to Singapore for tour, I was super excited for it, but then, for poly students, that week is a exam week, so unfortunately I couldn't buy the ticket. It was damn sad, I even search for the seats and prices. Just one week before the concert, I received an email from spots hub merchandise manager, Erny, that she is giving away 7 pair of free pair One Direction, On The Road Again Tour ticket, as I volunteer for sea games merchandise. I was lucky that I was able to get the free pair of One Direction ticket by replying the Machandise Manger's email ASAP after I received. Though the seat was right at the back($88 seat), being able to be there was already fortunate enough. Though couldn't see them clearly, as we were far back behind from stage, being able to see them from the big screen and listen to their beautiful voice was my biggest joy. Thank you One Direction for coming to Singapore, thank you sports hub for the tickets, I will never regret going to their concert!!! I wish they will be able to come Singapore again, and I will definitely buy the hot seat. :)

Can I just say OH MY FUXKING GOD! It was probably the best night of my life. I thought I wouldn't enjoy it as much since zayn wasn't there. But I was so wrong! They started the show off with Clouds and when they entered there were fireworks! I was just like. Harry, Niall, Liam, Louis obviously looked bomb af. I really couldn't believe they were right there in front of me. They played some of my favourite songs! Kiss you, Midnight Memories, Little Black Dress, Little White Lies, Through The Dark, Girl Almighty, Steal My Girl, You and I, Act My Age, No Control and ended with Best Song Ever. Along with the songs, they didn't leave any attempt behind of making us laugh and enjoy ourselves. Niall made a new rap about Vancity Chick, Van VanCity Chick hehe. Also Harry made us moan like ughh. OHHHHH YEAHHH And also I can't forget about a sign that said "NIALL HAS MORE FANS THAN NAUGHTY BOY HAS FANS" And Liam read it and said that it made his night. We heard Niall's Classic laugh after reading that sign. All in all it was the best day of my life and I hope they'll come back soon. I love them so much

My concert in Baltimore was totally awesome! I first got my merch, which was a white t-shirt with the dates on the back, and the program. I next waited for the gates to open, and I think I saw their cars. Someone waved, and their were microphones. I got in and walked up to my section(539). I then got some food and got to my seats. I went with my Aunt, by the way. We ate while waiting, and they played commercials and music videos. Icona Pop came on, and they were really good. We waited some more, and 1D finally came on. My seats were in the stands in front of the stage, so I got a really good view. Niall called us sexy, and a fan baked Harry cookies. They were gone by the end of the show. I sang along to every song, and screamed my heart out. We even made Liam feel better, as he was a bit ill. Liam and Louis had a water fight, the whole show was amazing. It was a bit hectic getting out though, but I was home by 2:00 AM. It was a great show. It was my 2nd concert, the first being TMH in Hershey. I will remember it for years to come!

The Secrets Of One Direction’s Wildly Successful ‘Where We Are’ Tour

The 2014 Where We Are tour remains One Direction’s greatest triumph. Celebrating the boys’ Midnight Memories album, which became the biggest-selling record of 2013 despite only being released in November of that year, the tour started in Bogotá, Colombia, in April, and concluded six months later in Miami, Florida. More than 3 million fans saw their favourite band live , and it reportedly raked in close to $300 million.

With a setlist that incorporated new hits like “Story Of My Life” and “Best Song Ever”, as well as fan favourites like “Little Things”, the tour was deliberately created as a visual feast. The stadium-only locations presented the design team with a challenge: how to ensure the energy of Harry, Liam, Louis, Niall and Zayn’s famously animated performances was not lost in the vast arenas.

Stufish CEO and set designer Ray Winkler was tasked with pulling it off. “I remember the guys having a lot of energy, and being very excited to perform to their fans,” he told Miss Vogue over email. “We had been working very closely with their creative director, Lee Lodge, over the years, so it was great to hook up with him again to design their Where We Are tour in 2014.”

When it came to moodboarding with the band and their team, Winkler said the priority was ensuring that every fan in those gargantuan stadiums felt like Louis, Harry, Liam, Zayn and Niall were singing only to them. “[We] made sure that the stage was pushed deep into the audience and the side video screens were rotated back, so that those who sat in the wings – traditionally not very good seats – could still see their favourite band and be part of the experience,” Winkler explained. “We made sure that no matter where you sat, you could always see them perform on stage.”

The set designer says every member of the band took a keen interest in the process. “They were all equally engaged and interested in the creation of this tour — after all, it was going to be the five of them that needed to make the set come alive, so they could deliver the most memorable experience for their fans. Their passion and ambition to deliver the best show possible was undeniable.” Winkler added: “All the members of One Direction were incredibly interested, and very excited about the fresh new creative approach that Lee brought to the table.”

The boys’ close involvement contributed to the fast-paced, high-energy planning phase ahead of the tour. “Ideas flew thick and fast, so our role was to understand the creative ambition and translate it into a viable touring proposition, while at the same time preserving the energy and intent of the original idea,” he said. “Stufish played an integral part in translating this vision into a vibrant and impactful design that reflected the band’s aspirations and ambitions of being the world’s greatest boy band.” Job done then.

The result was a bold, bright, electrifying production, picked out in a colour palette that reflected the energy of the band. Pyrotechnics were employed for additional drama, with a catwalk-style promenade jutting into the crowd for an intimate touch.

Of course, a key part of the production’s success was the excitement of the fans, who purchased their tickets for the sell-out tour just shy of a year in advance. “The energy that One Direction managed to generate from their fans in the stadium really inspired us to create an experience that their fans would never forget, and to push the boundaries of stage design for a pop concert,” Winkler says.

“The set was quite complex, with multiple entrances and exits connecting to multiple ramps and stairs. You can imagine some of the comedy of trying to choreograph the five band members on a stage terrain that was anything other than flat,” Winkler recalled. “The opportunity to get lost made for some funny moments of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Six years on, Ray clearly still has fond memories of his days working with One Direction boys. “My favourite memory of the tour was being surrounded by so much talent, dedicated to delivering the best show ever. One Direction was such an exciting band to work with, and it was a great privilege to be part of their journey and see them grow creatively.”

‘Better Than Words’: How One Direction Became One of the Great Rock Bands of the 21st Century

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

A bathroom figures significantly in the origin stories of at least two classic One Direction songs. The first will be familiar to any fan: Songwriter and producer Savan Kotecha was sitting on the toilet in a London hotel room, when he heard his wife say, “I feel so ugly today.” The words that popped into his head would shape the chorus of One Direction’s unforgettable 2011 debut, “What Makes You Beautiful.”

The second takes place a few years later: Another hotel room in England —   this one in Manchester — where songwriters and producers Julian Bunetta and John Ryan were throwing back Cucumber Collins cocktails and tinkering with a beat. Liam Payne was there, too. At one point, Liam got up to use the bathroom, and when he re-emerged, he was singing a melody. They taped it immediately. Most of it was mumbled — a temporary place-holder — but there was one phrase: “Better than words …” A few hours later, on the bus to another city, another show — Bunetta and Ryan can’t remember where — Liam asked, maybe having a laugh, “What if the rest of the song was just lyrics from other songs?”

“Songs in general, you’re just sort of waiting for an idea to bonk you on the head,” Ryan says from a Los Angeles studio, with Bunetta. “And if you’re sort of winking at it, laughing at it — we were probably joking, ‘What if [the next line was] “More than a feeling”? Well, that would actually be tight!’”

“Better Than Words,” closed One Direction’s third album, Midnight Memories . It was never a single, but became a fan-favorite live-show staple. It’s a midtempo headbanger that captures the essence of what One Direction is, and always was: One of the great rock & roll bands of the 21st century.

July 23rd marks One Direction’s 10th anniversary, the day Simon Cowell told Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson that they would progress on The X Factor as a group. Between that date and their last live performance (so far, one can hope) on December 31st, 2015, they released five albums, toured the world four times — twice playing stadiums — and left a trove of Top 10 hits for a devoted global fan base that came to life at the moment social media was redefining the contours of fandom.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

It’d been a decade since the heyday of ‘NSync and Backstreet Boys, and the churn of generations demanded a new boy band. One Direction’s songs were great and their charisma and chemistry undeniable, but what made them stick was a sound unlike anything else in pop — rooted in guitar rock at a time when that couldn’t have been more passé.

Kotecha, who met 1D on The X Factor and shepherded them through their first few years, is a devoted student of the history of boy bands. He first witnessed their power back in the Eighties, when New Kids on the Block helped his older sister through her teens. The common thread linking all great boy bands, from New Kids to BSB, he says, is, “When they’d break, they’d come out of nowhere, sounding like nothing that’s on the radio.”

In 2010, Kotecha remembers, “everybody was doing this sort of Rihanna dance pop.” But that just wasn’t a sound One Direction could pull off (the Wanted did it only once ); and famously, they didn’t even dance. Instead, the reference points for 1D went all the way back to the source of contemporary boy bands.

“Me and Simon would talk about how [One Direction] was Beatlesque, Monkees-esque,” Kotecha continues. “They had such big personalities. I felt like a kid again when I was around them. And I felt like the only music you could really do that with is fun, poppy guitar songs. It would come out of left field and become something owned by the fans.”

“The guitar riff had to be so simple that my friend’s 15-year-old daughter could play it and put a cover to YouTube,” says Carl Falk

To craft that sound on 1D’s first two albums, Up All Night and Take Me Home , Kotecha worked mostly with Swedish songwriters-producers Carl Falk and Rami Yacoub. They’d all studied at the Max Martin/Cheiron Studios school of pop craftsmanship, and Falk says they were confident they could crack the boy-band code once more with songs that recalled BSB and ‘NSync, but replaced the dated synths and pianos with guitars.

The greatest thing popular music can do is make someone else think, “I can do that,” and One Direction’s music was designed with that intent. “The guitar riff had to be so simple that my friend’s 15-year-old daughter could play it and put a cover to YouTube,” Falk says. “If you listen to ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ or ‘One Thing,’ they have two-finger guitar riffs that everyone who can play a bit of guitar can learn. That was all on purpose.”

One Direction famously finished third on The X Factor , but Cowell immediately signed them to his label, Syco Music. They’d gone through one round of artist-development boot camp on the show, and another followed on an X Factor live tour in the spring of 2011. They’d developed an onstage confidence, but the studio presented a new challenge. “We had to create who should do what in One Direction,” Falk says. To solve the puzzle the band’s five voices presented, they chose the kitchen-sink method and everyone tried everything.

“They were searching for themselves,” Falk adds. “It was like, ‘Harry, let’s just record him; he’s not afraid of anything.’ Liam’s the perfect song starter, and then you put Zayn on top with this high falsetto. Louis found his voice when we did ‘Change Your Mind.’ It was a long trial for everyone to find their strengths and weaknesses, but that was also the fun part.” Falk also gave Niall some of his first real guitar lessons; there’s video of them performing “One Thing” together, still blessedly up on YouTube.

Simon Cowell Doubts One Direction Will Reunite, Wishes He Could Still Profit Off Band's Name

Simon cowell is looking for the next one direction.

“What Makes You Beautiful” was released September 11th, 2011, in the U.K. and debuted at Number One on the singles chart there — though the video had dropped a month prior. While One Direction’s immediate success in the U.K. and other parts of Europe wasn’t guaranteed, the home-field odds were favorable. European markets historically have been kinder to boy bands than the U.S.; ‘NSync and Backstreet Boys found huge success abroad before they conquered at home. To that end, neither Kotecha nor Falk were sure 1D would break in the U.S. Falk even says of conceiving the band’s sound, “We didn’t want it to sound too American, because this was not meant — for us, at least — to work in America. This was gonna work in the U.K. and maybe outside the U.K.”

Stoking anticipation for “What Makes You Beautiful” by releasing the video on YouTube before the single dropped preceded the strategy Columbia Records (the band’s U.S. label) adopted for Up All Night . Between its November 2011 arrival in the U.K. and its U.S. release in March 2012, Columbia eschewed traditional radio strategies and built hype on social media. One Direction had been extremely online since their X Factor days, engaging with fans and spending their downtime making silly videos to share. One goofy tune, made with Kotecha, called “Vas Happenin’ Boys?” was an early viral hit.

“They instinctively had this — and it might just be a generational thing — they just knew how to speak to their fans,” Kotecha says. “And they did that by being themselves. That was a unique thing about these boys: When the cameras turned on, they didn’t change who they were.”

Social media was flooded with One Direction contests and petitions to bring the band to fans’ towns. Radio stations were inundated with calls to play “What Makes You Beautiful” long before it was even available. When it did finally arrive, Kotecha (who was in Sweden at the time) remembers staying up all night to watch it climb the iTunes chart with each refresh.

Take Me Home , was recorded primarily in Stockholm and London during and after their first world tour. The success of Up All Night had attracted an array of top songwriting talent — Ed Sheeran even penned two hopeless-romantic sad-lad tunes, “Little Things” and “Over Again” — but Kotecha, Falk, and Yacoub grabbed the reins, collaborating on six of the album’s 13 tracks. In charting 1D’s course, Kotecha returned to his boy-band history: “My theory was, you give them a similar sound on album two, and album three is when you start moving on.”

Still, there was the inherent pressure of the second album to contend with. The label wanted a “What Makes You Beautiful, Part 2,” and evidence that the 1D phenomenon wasn’t slowing down appeared outside the window of the Stockholm studio: so many fans , the street had to be shut down. Kotecha even remembers seeing police officers with missing-person photos, combing through the girls camped outside, looking for teens to return to their parents.

At this pivotal moment , One Direction made it clear that they wanted a greater say in their artistic future. Kotecha admits he was wary at first, but the band was determined. To help manage the workload, Kotecha had brought in two young songwriters, Kristoffer Fogelmark and Albin Nedler, who’d arrived with a handful of ideas, including a chorus for a booming power ballad called “Last First Kiss.”

“We thought, while we’re busy recording vocals, whoever’s not busy can go write songs with these two guys, and then we’ll help shape them as much as we can,” Kotecha says. “And to our pleasant surprise, the songs were pretty damn good.”

At this pivotal moment, too, songwriters Bunetta and Ryan also met the band. Friends from the Berklee College of Music, Bunetta and Ryan had moved out to L.A. and cut a few tracks, but still had no hits to their names. They entered the Syco orbit after scoring work on the U.S. version of The X Factor , and were asked if they wanted to try writing a song for Take Me Home . “I was like, ‘Yeah, definitely,’” Bunetta says. “’They sold 5 million albums? Hell, yeah, I want to make some money.’”

Working with Jamie Scott, who’d written two songs on Up All Night (“More Than This” and “Stole My Heart”), Bunetta and Ryan wrote “C’mon, C’mon” — a blinding hit of young love that rips down a dance-pop speedway through a comically oversize wall of Marshall stacks. It earned them a trip to London. Bunetta admits to thinking the whole 1D thing was “a quick little fad” ahead of their first meeting with the band, but their charms were overwhelming. Everyone hit it off immediately.

“Niall showed me his ass,” Bunetta remembers of the day they recorded, “They Don’t Know About Us,” one of five songs he and Ryan co-produced for Take Me Home (two are on the deluxe edition). “The first vocal take, he went in to sing, did a take. I was looking down at the computer screen and was like, ‘On this line, can you sing it this way?’ And I looked over and he was mooning me. I was like, ‘I love this guy!’”

Take Me Home dropped November 9th, just nine days short of Up All Night ’s first anniversary. With only seven weeks left in 2012, it became the fourth-best-selling album of the year globally, moving 4.4 million copies, per IFPI ; it fell short of Adele’s 21 , Taylor Swift’s Red, and 1D’s own Up All Night , which had several extra months to sell 4.5 million copies.

Kotecha, Falk, and Yacoub’s tracks anchored the album. Songs like “Kiss You,” “Heart Attack,” and “Live While We’re Young” were pristine pop rock that One Direction delivered with full delirium, vulnerability, and possibility — the essence of the teen — in voices increasingly capable of navigating all the little nuances of that spectrum. And the songs 1D helped write (“Last First Kiss,” “Back for You,” and “Summer Love”) remain among the LP’s best.

“You saw that they caught the bug and were really good at it,” Kotecha says of their songwriting. “And moving forward, you got the impression that that was the way for them.”

Like clockwork, the wheels began to churn for album three right after Take Me Home dropped. But unlike those first two records, carving out dedicated studio time for LP3 was going to be difficult — on February 23rd, 2013, One Direction would launch a world tour in London, the first of 123 concerts they’d play that year. They’d have to write and record on the road, and for Kotecha and Falk — both of whom had just had kids — that just wasn’t possible.

But it was also time for a creative shift. Even Kotecha knew that from his boy-band history: Album three is, after all, when you start moving on. One Direction was ready, too. Kotecha credits Louis, the oldest member of the group, for “shepherding them into adulthood, away from the very poppy stuff of the first two albums. He was leading the charge to make sure that they had a more mature sound. And at the time, being in it, it was a little difficult for me, Rami and Carl to grasp — but hindsight, that was the right thing to do.”

“For three years, this was our schedule,” Bunetta says. “We did X Factor October, November, December. Took off January. February, flew to London. We’d gather ideas with the band, come up with sounds, hang out. Then back to L.A. for March, produce some stuff, then go out on the road with them in April. Get vocals, write a song or two, come back for May, work on the vocals, and produce the songs we wrote on the road. Back to London in June-ish. Back here for July, produce it up. Go back on tour in August, get last bits of vocals, mix in September, back to X Factor in October , album out in November, January off, start it all over again.”

That cycle began in early 2013, when Bunetta and Ryan flew to London for a session that lasted just more than a week, but yielded the bulk of Midnight Memories . With songwriters Jamie Scott, Wayne Hector, and Ed Drewett they wrote “Best Song Ever” and “You and I,” and with Scott and One Direction, “Diana” and “Midnight Memories.” Bunetta and Ryan’s initial rapport with the band strengthened — they were a few years older, but, as Bunetta jokes, “we act like we’re 19 all the time anyway.” Years ago, Bunetta posted an audio clip documenting the creation of “Midnight Memories” — the place-holder chorus was a full-throated, perfectly harmonized, “I love KFC!”

For the most part, Bunetta, Ryan, and 1D doubled down on the rock sound their predecessors had forged, but there was one outlier from that week. A stunning bit of post-Mumford festival folk buoyed by a new kind of lyrical and vocal maturity called “Story of My Life.”

“This was a make-or-break moment for them,” Bunetta says. “They needed to grow up, or they were gonna go away — and they wanted to grow up. To get to the level they got to, you need more than just your fan base. That song extended far beyond their fan base and made people really pay attention.”

Production on Midnight Memories continued on the road, where, like so many bands before them, One Direction unlocked a new dimension to their music. Tour engineer Alex Oriet made it possible, Ryan says, building makeshift vocal booths in hotel rooms by flipping beds up against the walls. Writing and recording was crammed in whenever — 20 minutes before a show, or right after another two-hour performance.

“It preserved the excitement of the moment,” Bunetta says. “We were just there, doing it, marinating in it at all times. You’re capturing moments instead of trying to re-create them. A lot of times we’d write a song, sing it in the hotel, produce it, then fly back out to have them re-sing it — and so many times the demo vocals were better. They hadn’t memorized it yet. They were still in the mood. There was a performance there that you couldn’t re-create.”

Midnight Memories arrived, per usual, during a November, in 2013. And, per usual, it was a smash. The following year, 1D brought their songs to the environment they always deserved — stadiums around the world — and amid the biggest shows of their career , they worked on their aptly-titled fourth album, Four . The 123 concerts 1D had played the year before had strengthened their combined vocal prowess in a way that opened up an array of new possibilities.

“We could use their voices on Four to make something sound more exciting and bigger, rather than having to add too many guitars, synths, or drums,” Ryan says.

“They were so much more dynamic and subtle, too,” Bunetta adds. “I don’t think they could’ve pulled off a song like ‘Night Changes’ two albums prior; or the nuance to sing soft and emotionally on ‘Fireproof.’ It takes a lot of experience to deliver a restrained vocal that way.”

“A lot of the songs were double,” Bunetta says, “like somebody might be singing about their girlfriend, but there was another meaning that applied to the group as well.”

Musically, Four was 1D’s most-expansive album yet — from the sky-high piano rock of “Steal My Girl” to the tender, tasteful groove of “Fireproof” — and it had the emotional range to match. Now in their early twenties, songs like “Where Do Broken Hearts Go,” “No Control,” “Fool’s Gold,” and “Clouds” redrew the dramas and euphorias of adolescence with the new weight, wit, and wanton winks of impending adulthood. One Direction weren’t growing up normally in any sense of the word, but they were becoming songwriters capable of drawing out the most relatable elements from their extraordinary circumstances — like on “Change Your Ticket,” where the turbulent love affairs of young jet-setters are distilled to the universal pang of a long goodbye. There were real relationships inspiring these stories, but now that One Direction were four years into being the biggest band on the planet, it was natural that the relationships within the band would make it into the music as well.

“I think that on Four ,” Bunetta says, with a slight pause, “there were some tensions going on. A lot of the songs were double — like somebody might be singing about their girlfriend, but there was another meaning that applied to the group as well.”

He continues: “It’s tough going through that age, having to spread your wings with so many eyeballs on you, so much money and no break. It was tough for them to carve out their individual manhood, space, and point of view, while learning how to communicate with each other. Even more than relationship things that were going on, that was the bigger blanket that was in there every day, seeping into the songs.”

Bunetta remembers Zayn playing him “Pillowtalk” and a few other songs for the first time through a 3 a.m. fog of cigarette smoke in a hotel room in Japan.

“Fucking amazing,” he says. “They were fucking awesome. I know creatively he wasn’t getting what he needed from the way that the albums were being made on the road. He wanted to lock himself in the studio and take his time, be methodical. And that just wasn’t possible.”

A month or so later, and 16 shows into One Direction’s On the Road Again Tour, Zayn left the band . Bunetta and Ryan agree it wasn’t out of the blue: “He was frustrated and wanted to do things outside of the band,” Bunetta says. “It’s a lot for a young kid, all those shows. We’d been with them for a bunch of years at this point — it was a matter of when. You just hoped that it would wait until the last album.”

Still, Bunetta compares the loss to having a finger lopped off, and he acknowledges that Harry, Niall, Liam, and Louis struggled to find their bearings as One Direction continued with their stadium tour and next album, Made in the A.M . Just as band tensions bubbled beneath the songs on Four , Zayn’s departure left an imprint on Made in the A.M. Not with any overt malice, but a song like “Drag Me Down,” Bunetta says, reflects the effort to bounce back. Even Niall pushing his voice to the limits of his range on that song wouldn’t have been necessary if Zayn and his trusty falsetto were available.

But Made in the A.M. wasn’t beholden to this shake-up. Bunetta and Ryan cite “Olivia” as a defining track, one that captures just how far One Direction had come as songwriters: They’d written it in 45 minutes, after wasting a whole day trying to write something far worse.

“When you start as a songwriter, you write a bunch of shitty songs, you get better and you keep getting better,” Ryan says. “But then you can get finicky, and you’re like, ‘Maybe I have to get smart with this lyric.’ By Made in the A.M. … they were coming into their own in the sense of picking up a guitar, messing around, and feeling something, rather than being like, ‘How do I put this puzzle together?’”

After Zayn’s departure, Bunetta and Ryan said it became clear that Made in the A.M. would be One Direction’s last album before some break of indeterminate length. The LP boasts the palpable tug of the end, but to One Direction’s credit, that finality is balanced by a strong sense of forever. It’s literally the last sentiment they leave their fans on album-closer “History,” singing, “Baby don’t you know, baby don’t you know/We can live forever.”

In a way, Made in the A.M. is about One Direction as an entity. Not one that belonged to the group, but to everyone they spent five years making music for. Four years since their hiatus and 10 years since their formation, the fans remain One Direction’s defining legacy. Even as all five members have settled into solo careers, Ryan notes that baseless rumors of any kind of reunion — even a meager Zoom call — can still set the internet on fire. The old songs remain potent, too: Carl Falk says his nine-year-old son has taken to making TikToks to 1D tracks.

“Most of them weren’t necessarily musicians before this happened, but they loved music, and they found a love of creating, writing, and playing,” Kotecha says

There are plenty of metrics to quantify One Direction’s reach, success, and influence. The hard numbers — album sales and concert ticket stubs — are staggering on their own, but the ineffable is always more fun. One Direction were such a good band that a fan, half-jokingly, but then kinda seriously, started a GoFundMe to buy out their contract and grant them full artistic freedom. One Direction were such a good band that songwriters like Kotecha and Falk — who would go on to make hits with Ariana Grande, the Weeknd, and Nicki Minaj — still think about the songs they could have made with them. One Direction were such a good band that Mitski covered “Fireproof.”

But maybe it all comes down to the most ineffable thing of all: Chance. Kotecha compares success on talent shows like The X Factor to waking up one morning and being super cut — but now, to keep that figure, you have to work out at a 10, without having done the gradual work to reach that level. That’s the downfall for so many acts, but One Direction were not only able, but willing, to put in the work.

“They’re one of the only acts from those types of shows that managed to do it for such a long time,” Kotecha says. “Five years is a long time for a massive pop star to go nonstop. I know it was tiring, but they were fantastic sports about it. They appreciated and understood the opportunity they had — and, as you can see, they haven’t really stopped since. Most of them weren’t necessarily musicians before this happened, but they loved music, and they found a love of creating, writing, and playing. To have these boys — that had been sort of randomly picked — to also have that? It will never be repeated.”

In early 2010, teenagers Liam Payne , Harry Styles , Niall Horan , Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik auditioned as solo performers for the seventh season of British reality/talent show, The X Factor (UK) . For Liam Payne , it was his second audition process. Payne had first auditioned in 2008, but was eliminated during the judge's houses portion, due to his age and inexperience. For Louis Tomlinson , it was his third audition process and his first to qualify past the initial producer's auditions, which took place in April 2010. Each soloist succeeded through to the bootcamp stage, but all were eliminated at its conclusion. Simon Cowell and three other judges decided the groups were not evenly split that year, and decided to call back ten eliminated solo contestants. These contestants were placed into two groups, allowing them all to continue competing. In August 2010, all five members of One Direction spent two weeks living at Harry's father's bungalow in Cheshire, England [1] . One Direction were the favorite act to win throughout the 2010 season of X Factor, generating massive unprecedented fan and media hype. Ultimately, they finished in third place behind runner up Rebecca Ferguson and winner Matt Cardle. Simon Cowell signed One Direction to his record label, Syco Music , on December 13th, 2010.

The album also saw the band creative contributions increase with Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne each co-writing ten tracks, Harry Styles co-writing five tracks, Niall Horan co-writing three tracks and Zayn Malik co-writing two. In the nine years since becoming a band, One Direction have sold over 50 million albums worldwide, and were the first band to ever have four albums debut at #1 on the US Billboard 200. Four of One Direction's albums have sold over a million copies in the USA. In 2016, they were the second highest earning celebrities of the year, earning over $130 million. Zayn Malik's Departure

On 25 March 2015, a statement posted on One Direction's official Facebook page confirmed that Zayn Malik had officially and permanently exited the band [2] . His sudden departure made worldwide headlines, as One Direction were in the process of completing their fourth world tour at the time. Malik had previously been signed off from the tour a week before, but had been expected to return after a short trip back to his hometown in London. It was speculated at the time Malik was signed off due to relationship troubles with then-fiancée Perrie Edwards . Malik was photographed holding hands with and embracing another woman days before he was signed off, and angrily addressed claims of infidelity on Twitter.

Zayn would later reveal a combination of anxiety, exhaustion and introversion as primary reasons for his exit. He also revealed the band's pop-rock sound was never his preferred taste in music. Zayn released his debut single on January 29, 2016, and his debut album, Mind of Mine , on March 25, 2016. Niall, Harry, Liam and Louis continued One Direction as a four piece. The band's relationship with Zayn was initially strained, with Louis and Zayn clashing on Twitter in April 2015 and Harry making several underhanded comments suggesting continued tension. In 2017, Zayn claimed he and Harry rarely spoke during their time as bandmates. Louis would eventually make up with Zayn in early 2017, partially to fulfill his mother's dying wish for them to repair their friendship. Liam has said he and Zayn keep in contact.

Band Hiatus

One Direction have been on hiatus since 13 December 2015, when they last performed as a group on The X Factor (UK) 's 2015 grand final episode.

On 23 August 2015, UK tabloid publication The Sun reported One Direction would be taking a break in 2016, but used the tagline " This Is The End ", which worldwide media outlets then used to report the band was splitting up [3] . On August 25, Niall confirmed on Twitter that the band would take a break from touring, but said they had no plans to split up [4] . Louis also tweeted saying "we're not going anywhere" [5] . The hiatus is the band's first, and only, break from touring and collaborating together since 2010.

All four members defined the hiatus as a "well-deserved" break [6] they will eventually return from as a group. Niall stated, "It seems like no matter how many times we say that we are not breaking up, the more people are convinced we are breaking up, so I have given up trying to explain it. It will be good to be able to get home a bit more, because that really is the only downside of the gig. [7] " All four members continue to acknowledge the anniversary of the band's formation on July 23 each year. An end date for the hiatus will not be confirmed until each member is ready to return to the group [8] .

In the September 2016 issue of AnOther Man Magazine , Harry stated "I would never say we'll never do anything again, but it's good for us to be exploring different things. Maybe at some point everyone will want to do something again but it's better if it happens naturally, like, "Hey we all really want to do this again". If that were to happen, it'd be amazing. I would never rule that out. It's the most important, greatest thing that ever happened to me, being in that band. It completely changed my life". On September 29, 2016 Niall told Capital FM a reunion was inevitable, stating "For the foreseeable, we're doing our own thing. We still talk all the time. It could be one year, could be two, but it'll definitely happen there's no doubt about that [9] ." He elaborated further in a November interview, stating "We just felt like it was the right time. I can’t really put anything to it. It wasn’t something we delved into and thought ‘is this the right time to do this?’. We just thought ‘let’s take a break’ and we will get back into it in a couple of years or something. I am sure once everyone starts getting bored again, we will be like ‘Hey, are you ready?". [10]

In April 2017, Harry elaborated on One Direction's reason for their hiatus in a Rolling Stone interview, stating: "I didn't want to exhaust our fan base. If you're shortsighted, you can think, 'Let's just keep touring'. But we all thought too much of the group than to let that happen. You realize you're exhausted and you don't want to drain people's belief in you. I love the band, and would never rule out anything in the future. The band changed my life, gave me everything [11] ". Interviewer Cameron Crowe stated in a subsequent interview that Harry "defended the future of the band". Harry further elaborated on French TV show Quotidien, stating "It’s been a lot of fun. We were very lucky to get to do some amazing things at the moment in our lives. We’re in a time where everyone’s trying their own thing and having a good time. It’s been amazing to see everyone do so well. If I can do as well as the other boys, that’d be amazing [12] . As of 2020, they had 7 year-end singles solo and band on Billboard.

Solo Career Developments

Lp1

Liam: In 2016, Liam signed with Capitol Records. A year later, Liam premiered his debut solo single, " Strip That Down ", co-written by Ed Sheeran and featuring American rapper Quavo. It became the highest selling single from a remaining One Direction member and was a worldwide top 10 hit. He spent most of 2017 conducting American promotional radio tours and performing at music festivals worldwide. Liam released four more singles; " Bedroom Floor " (co-written by US singer Charlie Puth), " For You " (a duet with UK singer Rita Ora, for the  Fifty Shades Darker  soundtrack), " Get Low " (a collaboration with German-Russian dance producer Zedd) and " Familiar " (a duet with Colombian singer J Balvin). Of the four, the most successful was "For You", peaking in the top 5 and 10 of many worldwide charts, and scoring both Payne and Ora their first #1 single in Germany. In late 2018, Liam delayed the release of his debut record, but released an EP titled First Time on 24 August 2018. He also featured on Jonas Blue's single "Polaroid" along with Lennon Stella. Liam released his debut solo album, LP1 , on 6 December 2019. The album received very poor reviews and was not a commercial success worldwide, peaking at #17 in the UK. One track titled "Both Ways" received online criticism for lyrics perceived to be fetishizing female bisexuality. The official singles for the album were "Strip That Down", "Get Low", "Bedroom Floor", "Familiar", "Stack It Up", "All I Want (For Christmas)" and "Live Forever". Despite the previous success of Strip That Down, the remaining singles only found mild success. Liam has redirected his talents to YouTube and Tik Tok as of 2020, but still occasionally releases singles. His most recent is "Sunshine" for the Disney film "Ron Gone Wrong", released in August 2021.

Harry: In 2016, Harry signed with Columbia Records . On 25 March 2017, a promotional advert aired on UK television, announcing Harry's debut single Sign Of The Times was premiering worldwide on April 7, 2017. The song was critically acclaimed and became a top 5 hit worldwide. During his promotional campaign, Harry covered Rolling Stone magazine, performed on Saturday Night Live and co-hosted The Late Late Show With James Corden for an entire week. He also staged spontaneous concerts in the UK and US, before conducting a small venue tour in September 2017, which was followed by a larger arena tour from March 2018. His self-titled album , Harry Styles , debuted at #1 in 20 countries, including the United States, making him only the second UK male artist, after former bandmate Zayn Malik, to debut atop the US album chart. In July 2017, Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk , which featured Harry in his debut acting role, premiered worldwide to critical acclaim. Two more singles - Two Ghosts and Kiwi - were released from Harry's debut album, to mild success. To cap off 2017, Harry co-hosted a variety special with friend Nick Grimshaw on the BBC, and performed live at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai, China. Harry spent most of 2018 touring the world, and began performing two unreleased songs - "Anna" and "Medicine" during each concert. "Medicine" made worldwide headlines when fans and media began speculating the lyrics suggested bisexuality. Harry was chosen as the face of Gucci's 2018-2019 campaign and briefly served as an executive producer for short-lived American sitcom Happy Together, loosely based on his time living with Ben Winston . In May 2019, Harry served as a co-host for the Met Gala, alongside Lady Gaga, Alessandro Michele, Serena Williams and Anna Wintour. Harry released his second solo album, Fine Line , on 13 December 2019. The album spawned six singles - Lights Up, Adore You, Falling, Watermelon Sugar, Golden and Treat People With Kindness. Of the six, Adore You and Watermelon Sugar were worldwide top 5 hits, with the latter becoming Harry's first US #1 single and his first Grammy-winning song. Lights Up was a top 20 single worldwide and the music video (as well as Watermelon Sugar's) marked a more sexual image for Styles. The music video for Kindness featured actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Harry gave his most in-depth interview with Zane Lowe on November 23, 2019. The 45 minute interview saw him fondly remembering his One Direction days, reflecting on his recent break up and briefly addressing the loss of his stepfather. Harry's Love On Tour world tour was initially announced for 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tour restarted in the United States in September 2021. Harry is to star in two 2022 films, Don't Worry Darling and My Policeman.

He chose Liam Payne as his celebrity guest judge for the Judges Houses portion of the competition. In March 2019, Louis released another single from his forthcoming album titled " Two of Us ". In September 2019, Louis released the single "Kill My Mind" and performed for thousands at the Coca Cola Music Experience Festival in Madrid. His debut single, " Pillowtalk ", was released in January 2016 and the music video featured his real life on-off girlfriend, American supermodel Gigi Hadid . The song was a worldwide hit, debuting at number one in the UK and US, making Malik the first British artist to debut at number one in the US with a debut single. Zayn's debut album, Mind of Mine , was released on 25 March 2016, a year to the day he left One Direction. The album debuted at #1 in the USA, making Zayn the first British male artist to debut at number one in both the UK and US with his debut album. Two more singles were released - Like I Would and Wrong - to mild success. Zayn has featured on several collaborative singles including "Who" from the 2016 Ghostbusters soundtrack, "Cruel" from electronic dance duo Snakehips, a remix of Chris Brown's single "Back To Sleep" and an M.I.A song titled "Freedun". In November 2016, he released his first autobiography titled "Z". In December 2016, he surprise released "I Don't Wanna Live Forever", a duet with American singer Taylor Swift for the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack. It became one of the highest selling songs of the year and was eventually nominated for a Grammy Award. In 2017, Zayn released "Still Got Time" with Canadian rapper PartyNextDoor, to moderate success. It was originally announced Zayn's second album would be released mid 2017, however this did not eventuate. Throughout 2017, Zayn made several successful fashion ventures, including a collaboration with Donatella Versace, a shoe collection with Giuseppe and several Vogue magazine covers. In September 2017, Zayn released "Dusk Till Dawn" a duet with Australian singer Sia for the The Mountain Between Us soundtrack. The song was a top 10 hit worldwide. Zayn began releasing numerous singles with minimal promotion, often just a music video, and uploading many song covers to his official Instagram page. From April 2018 onward, Zayn released the singles "Let Me", "Entertainer", "Sour Diesel" and "Too Much", a collaboration with American producer, Timbaland. Of these singles, only "Let Me" found moderate UK success. In December 2018, Zayn's second album "Icarus Falls" was released, but not widely promoted. Zayn alluded to problems with his record label. In May 2019, Zayn appeared on the soundtrack for the live action remake of Aladdin, singing "A Whole New World" with Zhavia Ward. Zayn has not performed live since 2016, after withdrawing from a UK music festival that year citing "the worst anxiety of my career". He collaborated with numerous artists such as R3HAB, Sabrina Claudio and Shaed. He welcomed his first child, Khai, with Hadid, in September 2020. Zayn released his third album "Nobody is Listening" in January 2021. In October 2021, Yolanda Hadid (Gigi's mother) claimed Zayn had struck her (Yolanda) in an argument and was considering pressing charges. Zayn strongly denied the claim.

Group: In 2016, One Direction won Best Live Act at the Silver Cleft Awards, Best International Artist at the 2016 ARIA Awards, were Forbes second place Top Earners 2016 and second highest paid musicians of the year, with over $110 million to their name, and were confirmed to be holding six 2016 Guinness World Records [13] . On 24 October 2016, a song titled " Something That Scares Me About Love ", co-written by Liam and Louis, was registered to ASCAP. All four members of One Direction were reunited on 10 December 2016, backstage at the 2016 X Factor (UK) grand finale, where Louis Tomlinson performed his debut solo release " Just Hold On ", a collaboration with DJ Steve Aoki . The reunion was a show of solidarity as Louis's mother, Johannah Deakin , had passed away after a battle with cancer just three days earlier. Zayn sent a message of support to Louis via Twitter. In 2017, One Direction's " History " music video won Best British Video at the 2017 BRIT Awards . When Liam's debut single debuted at #3 on the UK charts, One Direction became the second group in UK chart history from which all members made the top 10, after The Beatles. In August 2017, One Direction became the first band to have all current and former members achieve a US Top 40 solo hit [14] . They achieved this in 18 months. Previous record holders - The Beatles - achieved the same in 21. One Direction are now tied with The Eagles for most members achieving a solo Top 40 hit. When Liam's single reached #1 on US pop radio, One Direction became the only group to have three members achieve this, and the only group to have two members of the same group hold both the #1 and #2 spots, as Liam's single had dethroned Niall's single from number one. In 2018, Harry placed third on the Sunday Times Rich List 2018 (in the Under 30s category), followed by Niall at #4, and Liam and Louis tying for fifth [15] . Louis and Liam reunited for the Judges Houses portion of Louis's run as judge on The X Factor (UK) in October 2018, and again in September 2019, when both were headliners for the Coca Cola Music Experience festival in Madrid. In April 2020, Liam revealed the group had been in talks to commemorate their 10 year anniversary on July 23, 2020. The information made worldwide headlines and sparked fan frenzy. Niall confirmed he had recently spoken to Louis and Liam about the ten year anniversary, while Liam revealed Louis was playfully displeased with the info becoming public perhaps before it was supposed to and had threatened to egg Liam's house as a result. Niall made further comments suggesting there may not be a reunion as such, but they had simply discussed the anniversary. Harry commented in an interview that the anniversary would be an emotional day. Ultimately, all members, aside from Zayn, commemorated the anniversary with lengthy social media posts and Spotify hosted a special listening day.

This Is Us was the first theatrical concert film about One Direction, detailing life on the road during their 2012 Take Me Home Tour. Filming began in January 2013. All footage was shot in 3D. This Is Us premiered worldwide on August 20, 2013. This Is Us is currently the fourth highest grossing concert movie, grossing over six times the film's budget. The band's music video for " Best Song Ever " featured preview clips from the film, and the plot of the video centered around a Hollywood production company pitching ideas to the band for a music video, when they stop by the office while filming their movie. The band has made suggestive comments in subsequent interviews about the documentary being heavily scripted.

" One Direction: Where We Are - The Concert Film " was the second theatrical concert film of One Direction, showcasing one concert at San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy, during the band's 2014 Where We Are world tour. The film was exclusively released to cinema for two days from October 11, 2014. While mostly centered around the concert, the DVD featured behind the scenes footage of the band rehearsing songs, while discussing their success so far and recording their fourth album. The footage also showed the band visiting Christ The Redeemer in Rio De Janeiro on a day off. The film broke the record for the highest grossing event cinema production with a net total of $15 million.

Seven Facts About One Direction’s ‘Where We Are’ Stadium Tour

Keep your weekends full of the coolest things to do around boston with our weekly weekender newsletter..

one direction 'where we are' tour

Photo via One Direction Official Facebook

The ultimate boy band weekend is upon us, folks. Gillette Stadium is hosting One Direction for three consecutive nights on August 7, 8, and 9, and dads are going to have a great time driving their preteens out to Foxboro. While nobody is more excited than band member Niall Horan and his red socks (get it?), those of you going should know what you’re up against.

Remember: Directioners don’t mess around. That’s what makes them beautiful.

1. “Where We Are” is battling Jay and Bey’s “ On The Run ” for a big second place ranking.  According to Forbes , One Direction is expected to break $314 million in gross sales for their 30+ stops—making just under $5 million per show. “On The Run” is projecting $100 million for their 20 stops, tallying at exactly $5 million per show. This puts 1D neck and neck with Jay and Bey for second place ranking in largest sales per show ever , right behind U2’s “360” tour. May the best divas win.

2. The majority of the male restrooms were turned into ladies’ rooms at their Met Life Stadium shows.  It makes sense. Sorry, bros.

Are you a guy at a One Direction concert?? https://t.co/ih37cMFYwp — Alex Goldschmidt (@alexandergold) August 4, 2014

3. Ticket prices for “Where We Are” are significantly less than the band’s 2013 “Take Me Home” tour.   Forbes also reported that the average price for “Where We Are” in the secondary market (Stubhub, etc.) is $174—62 percent less than last year’s $463 average for the “Take Me Home” tour. The cheapest ticket for a fan in Boston at Xfinity Center was $107 last year (literally for a lawn seat ). This year, fans could get Gillette tickets for $8.

4. Harry Styles asked the fiancé of a crew member to run away with him via a video message .  Tash Gershfield’s husband James played this video message at their wedding where Styles says dreamy things like, “It’s not too late,” and  “You don’t have to go through with this.” But clearly Tash Gershfield failed to understand the gravity of the situation because she did not, in fact, choose to run away with Harry Styles.

5. “Where We Are” is being made into a concert film. One Direction released the first trailer  a few weeks ago for One Direction: Where We Are , which will hit theaters on October 11. The movie will feature 75 minutes of concert performances along with 15 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage and exclusive interviews. One Direction’s first docu-concert film This Is Us broke $68 million in the box office worldwide last summer.

6. The MBTA is running a special commuter rail “concert” train to Foxboro Station on Saturday only. The train departs from South Station at 3:45 p.m., Back Bay Station at 3:50 p.m., Dedham Corporate Station at 4:10 p.m., and arrives at the stadium by 4:50 p.m. How’s that for defeating the heinous three-hour traffic jam?

7. 1D fans are crazy as ever. Welcome to sociopath nation.

25 things even die-hard fans probably didn't know about One Direction

  • One Direction formed in 2010 and they've been on indefinite hiatus for the last six years .
  • Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, and Zayn Malik have gotten matching tattoos.
  • Payne has a tattoo of lyrics from the band's unreleased track "Man on a Mission."

Simon Cowell said it took him 10 minutes to come up with the idea to combine solo artists Horan, Malik, Payne, Styles, and Tomlinson into a group.

when did one direction tour in 2013

In 2010, Horan, Malik, Payne, Tomlinson, and Styles auditioned as solo artists for "The X Factor," a singing-competition show based in the UK.

The five of them were eliminated early on in the competition, but judges Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger invited them back for the opportunity to compete together as a group, thus forming One Direction.

The group went on to place third in the competition overall, but they still secured a record deal with Cowell's label, Syco.

Cowell later told the band during the 1D Day web event in 2013 that it took him 10 minutes to come up with the idea to combine the five of them into a group .

They were almost called an entirely different name that Payne's dad suggested.

when did one direction tour in 2013

During a 2019 interview on "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon," Payne said that his father, Geoff, initially suggested that the boys adopt the band name USP — short for Unique Selling Point.

Of course, this did not have quite the same ring that One Direction did, and it was immediately shut down.

Styles is widely credited with coming up with the band's name, which he's said doesn't really have a special meaning.

Their United States debut became a significant part of UK music history.

when did one direction tour in 2013

With their first full-length album, "Up All Night," One Direction became the first UK-based musical group to debut at no. 1 on the US Billboard 200 album chart .

According to a statement that the band's label, Syco, gave Reuters, the band sold more than 176,000 copies of the album within minutes of its official release.

Prior to joining the band, Malik had never flown on an airplane.

when did one direction tour in 2013

The Bradford-born singer said on "The Jonathan Ross Show" that the first time he'd ever boarded a flight was with his fellow One Direction bandmates .

Malik told the host that he was initially nervous about the experience — and that Tomlinson made it even worse.

" ...  I was quite nervous about it so before the plane took off I'm sat with Louis on one side and Liam's on the other — and Louis goes, 'Right when it takes off it's gonna do a loop-de-loop in the air,'" Malik recalled to the host. "So I remember, for like 20 minutes of the journey, I was waiting for it to go upside down. Just terrified."

One Direction was once the opener for fellow boy band Big Time Rush.

when did one direction tour in 2013

Big Time Rush, the US-based boy band that had a Nickelodeon show from 2009 to 2013, once had One Direction has their opening act.

1D was the opener for part of the North American leg of Big Time Rush's first national tour, the Better With U tour.

Per J-14 magazine, one of Big Time Rush's members, Kendall Schmidt, later told Teen.com it "sucked" having 1D as their opening act.

"Let's put it this way: when One Direction were opening for us, their support was blossoming," Schmidt said, per J-14 . "As cool as it was to hang out with them, it sucked for us because there would be 2,000 girls outside the show singing their songs, even though we were headlining."

They had secret games that they played with each other to keep themselves entertained during press days.

when did one direction tour in 2013

In an April 2020 YouTube video , Payne said One Direction used to use code words to get out of "boring" things they didn't want to do.

"When we didn't, like, wanna go somewhere ... we'd just have a word —  it was like a code word — where we'd all just fall on the floor and lie there until everybody went away, which I think is the best game we ever invented," Payne said.

He added, "There were a number of code words ... like, 'Help me!'"

They were brand ambassadors for the Pokémon Black and Pokémon White video games.

when did one direction tour in 2013

In 2011, One Direction partnered with Nintendo UK and became brand ambassadors for the company's Pokémon Black and Pokémon White video games .

They even performed at the launch party in London to celebrate the game's release.

Four out of the five band members have matching tattoos.

when did one direction tour in 2013

In an interview with Glamour UK, Tomlinson and Malik revealed that the four British members of the band have crosses inked on their ankles .

In a later video with AskAnythingChat, Tomlinson said this bit of ink kicked off his tattoo addiction.

"We decided — well most of us actually except for Niall — as a band to get these little ones on our ankle," he explained. "And then I suppose I just started getting addicted."

Additionally, Tomlinson and Malik have corresponding "Bus 1" tattoos, which are believed to reference the band's tour bus.

Horan remains tattoo-free to this day.

Payne once described One Direction's sound as a "Pink in a boy band form."

when did one direction tour in 2013

In an early interview with Teen Vogue in 2012, One Direction seemed to imply their songs had more of an edge to them than standard pop music.

Payne told the publication, "We've always described our sound as a bit more guitar driven than normal pop music. Kind of Pink in a boy band form. We've heard a few people say that so now we use it. I think Pink is amazing person to be compared to."

The Grammy-winning artist Pink is known for her edgy , pop-rock music.

In addition to appearing on countless talk shows, the band appeared as themselves on episodes of "Family Guy" and "iCarly."

when did one direction tour in 2013

During the early days of One Direction, all five boys appeared on an episode of the popular Nickelodeon series "iCarly. "

The 2012 episode follows a plot where Harry contracts a fictional disease known as "jungle worms."

Several years later, all of the band members – except for Malik — voiced animated versions of themselves for an episode of Fox's "Family Guy."

Between 2010 and 2017, they won more than 200 awards and accolades.

when did one direction tour in 2013

In addition to becoming a global sensation, One Direction racked up an impressive number of accolades during their five years together.

They have seven Brit awards, six Billboard Music Awards, seven American Music Awards, and four MTV Video Music Awards.

They also currently hold the record for most Teen Choice Award wins, earning 28 overall.

Some members of One Direction have had Twitter feuds with members of the UK boy band The Wanted.

when did one direction tour in 2013

In 2012, drama broke out between members of The Wanted and One Direction when Malik called The Wanted member Max George a "wannabe."

According to E! Online, the feud escalated with a series of back-and-forth exchanges that included a range of insults. For example, Malik called George "chlamydia boy" and George tweeted for Malik to "Stay off the bud...It makes you cranky."

Tomlinson and The Wanted's Tom Parker also got involved. The so-called Twitter feud was reignited in 2013, and Payne also joined in.

Although many of these tweets have since been deleted, these public disputes fueled a rivalry between The Wanted fans and One Direction fans.

The Wanted went on an indefinite hiatus in 2014 .

One Direction has collections of office supplies, dolls, singing toothbrushes, and fragrances.

when did one direction tour in 2013

As 1D grew into a cultural phenomenon, the group began to stamp their name on more products than just CDs and sweatshirts.

They've released multiple fragrances – including one called Our Moment and another called That Moment — and a limited-edition collection of stationery supplies with Office Depot.

In 2012, the group paired with Hasbro to release a collection of dolls in their likeness that quickly sold out. They also had a line of Brush Buddies singing toothbrushes that played some of their hit singles.

One Direction has been longtime friends with James Corden.

when did one direction tour in 2013

Over the years, the boys have cultivated many friendships with high-profile celebrities, but one of the most notable is their bond with "The Late Late Show" host James Corden.

Corden reportedly met One Direction in the early days of their careers thanks in part to Tomlinson, whose late mother once worked on a UK television program that featured Corden as an actor.

He soon became a trusted friend to the budding stars, with Tomlinson once calling him one of the band's mentors. Tomlinson, Horan, and Styles even attended the TV host's wedding in 2012.

One Direction's also appeared on "The Late Late Show" — and their Carpool Karaoke is one of the most-watched ones of all time , with over 162 million views on YouTube.

Styles and Horan have since appeared on the show to do Carpool Karaoke as solo artists, too.

British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is responsible for writing several 1D hits, including "Moments," "Little Things," "Over Again," and "18."

when did one direction tour in 2013

Ed Sheeran told Capital FM that he wrote the track "18" specifically for One Direction , whereas the other songs were originally supposed to be on his own albums.

Beyond having a professional music bond, Styles has been longtime pals with the hit-making "Shape of You" singer.

Sheeran and Styles have matching tattoos. Styles has also let Sheeran give him a tattoo, though the "Perfect" singer later said he's "not really" a good tattoo artist.

Tomlinson appears behind the wheel in nearly half of One Direction's music videos.

when did one direction tour in 2013

Payne said in a video for his YouTube channel in 2020 that "[Louis] always got to drive in every music video, none of us ever got to drive anything."

And it's true that Tomlinson was often chosen to be the driver in music videos that involved motor vehicles .

In the behind-the-scenes footage for the "Kiss You" music video, Tomlinson also shared he'd driven in three videos up to that point, adding, "In the second [video, "Gotta Be You"], I broke a Mini Cooper. In 'Live While We're Young,' I broke the Jeep."

In addition to driving in "Gotta Be You" and "Live While We're Young," the "Walls" singer has technically been behind the wheel in nearly half of One Direction's 17 music videos.

He drove a futuristic vehicle in "Drag Me Down," an old-school bus in "What Makes You Beautiful," an open-top car in "Night Changes," and a faux prop car in "Kiss You."

Technically, the "History" music video also features Tomlinson behind the wheel in a flashback clip from the "Live While We're Young" video.

As a fun bonus, in the "Midnight Memories" video, Tomlinson and the rest of the band drive motorized scooters.

The band's third album, "Midnight Memories," was the best-selling album around the globe in 2013.

when did one direction tour in 2013

As the BBC reported, according to data from the British Phonographic Institute (BPI), "Midnight Memories" was the best-selling album around the globe for 2013.

Although the album was not released until November 2013, per the BPI, "Midnight Memories" sold an impressive 4 million copies in less than two months , instantly topping the charts.

The rock-inspired record included chart-topping hits like, "Story of My Life," "Best Song Ever," and "You and I."

According to Forbes, the band's Where We Are tour was the highest-grossing concert tour of 2014.

when did one direction tour in 2013

The group's Where We Are tour kicked off in April of 2014 and covered 69 shows across multiple countries to promote their album "Midnight Memories."

According to Forbes, the successful stadium tour brought in an estimated $290 million in revenue.

The experience was commemorated in a concert film that was shot at San Siro stadium in Milan, Italy.

The band was once forced to leave a Trump hotel because, Payne said, the band wouldn't wake up at an "ungodly" hour to fulfill Donald Trump's special requests.

when did one direction tour in 2013

During a 2017 episode of the web series "Hot Ones," Payne told host Sean Evans that the One Direction boys were forced to leave a Trump hotel after they were denied access to a special garage entrance and exit.

This was in December 2012, just before the group was set to perform at Madison Square Garden.

Payne said that, as far as he's aware, Trump "called up at like some ungodly hour asking if we could come and meet his daughter and our tour manager politely said, 'They're in bed – like it's not gonna happen right now.'"

The singer said Trump told their manager to wake up the band and when the manager refused, they had their access to the hotel's private, underground garage entrance and exit revoked, which caused a safety issue. After that, Payne said, the group left.

Horan's account of the event was a bit different .

While on CBS's "The Late Late Show" in 2018, Horan said that Trump told One Direction that they would not be able to use the hotel's garage because they refused to take a photo with his lawyer's daughter, so they left.

One Direction's hit single "Midnight Memories" was originally about Kentucky Fried Chicken.

when did one direction tour in 2013

The guitar-heavy hit, which was co-written by Payne and Tomlinson, was originally about the popular fast-food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC).

"The first inspiration for 'Midnight Memories' was KFC," Payne said in an interview with French television station Cauet in 2013 . "True story ... The chorus originally was 'I love K-F-C.'"

He added, "We wanted to actually release that version."

Years later, Tomlinson told MTV that writing "Midnight Memories" was a "real magic moment," adding that the song came together in about 45 minutes.

They have been immortalized at Madame Tussauds wax museum.

when did one direction tour in 2013

For years, five realistic-looking One Direction wax figures have been on display at the iconic Madame Tussauds in London.

The band members also donated their own clothes to be part of the fixtures.

They're the first boy band to be recreated in wax for the museum since the Beatles in 1964

The boys were known to play many pranks on each other.

Throughout the years, One Direction has been known for playing countless practical jokes on each other, including publicly pantsing one another, as well as messing with each other's dressing rooms and vehicles.

In fact, in the 2013 documentary concert film "This Is Us," Payne pulls down Styles' pants in the middle of a "What Makes You Beautiful" solo.

But pantsing is nothing new to the group. During a Q&A session with AskAnythingChat in 2015, Horan said, "I had my trousers pulled down at a service station by Louis Tomlinson."

This wasn't the only time Horan was the target of a Tomlinson prank.

During an interview with Yahoo! Music in 2013, Payne said someone once put glue in his hat, though he doesn't know who.

Tomlinson also shared that he and Malik once played a practical joke on Horan by putting lemons in his new, white shoes.

When asked why they did it, Tomlinson said, "It's not a trick. It's just weird."

Their song "No Control" is considered an unofficial single from the album "Four."

In 2015, fans launched a campaign to get "No Control" an official single release, and they created a series of viral hashtags, like #ProjectNoControl and #NoControlDay, that moved radio stations around the world to play the song.

In an interview on "The Late Late Show With James Corden," Tomlinson explained that fans decided to do their own release of the song because they loved it so much and "'No Control' was never a single that was chosen by us."

Tomlinson even tweeted his appreciation for the fan movement .

The band has recorded countless tracks that fans might never get to hear.

During an official web hangout with "Night Changes" video director Ben Winston, the 1D boys said that they've recorded countless tunes that have never been released .

The group told Winston that all of the unused tracks went into a vault for a possible future release.

In the interview, Payne also shared he has a lyric from the band's unreleased track "Man on a Mission" inked on his arm. It reads, "Somewhere is a place that nobody knows."

One Direction once broke a record for being the most popular music group on Twitter.
