Derren Brown adds Edinburgh dates

Showman tour to play six perfs at playhouse.

Illusionist and psychological manipulator Darren Brown has added six performances at the Edinburgh Playhouse to the eight month UK tour of his latest show, Showman , with tickets to his May 2022 shows now on sale .

Delayed because of the pandemic, the tour kicks off with ten postponed dates this Autumn. It restarts in March 2022 with dates at the Glasgow King’s (March 8 – 12, tickets here ), Edinburgh Playhouse (May 3 – 7, tickets here ) and His Majesty’s Aberdeen (May 10 – 14, tickets here ), before finishing up in Northampton in October.

Having found fame on the TV with his inventive manipulations and de-bunkings, Brown is at his best live on stage. Indeed, his live shows have won him two Oliviers – for Something Wicked This Way Comes (2006) and Svengali (2012) and he has received more Olivier nominations and wins than any other one-man show in theatre history.

Showman is Brown’s first brand new theatre show in six years. Announcing the new dates he said: “2022 will be the biggest tour I’ve done in 20 years. It’s exciting and daunting and I’m considering a bigger suitcase. Maybe even a four-wheeler. It’s madness and I can’t wait.”

Speaking of the show itself, before the pandemic, he said: “the heart of the show is about remembering what’s important. Like how the very things that we find most isolating in life – our fears and difficulties – actually connect us. Framed with what I think will be some extraordinary demonstrations of my voodoo.”

The resulting show will have mutated and developed over the last 18 months. Brown adds: “ All I can reveal at this point is that the show will ultimately be about you, the audience member, because that’s what I find most interesting.

more than you’d expect

“There are places I’d like to take you where we haven’t been before. I always aim to have it deliver more than you’d expect. I’m excited to be at the starting point of that process. Getting it on the road will be my favourite part of the year.”

Brown’s latest book, A Book of Secrets , is published in September 2021. According to the blurb, in it “he considers the value of difficulty in our lives while reflecting on his own experiences of challenges and change. Perhaps it is in those times when we are forced to cope with adversity that we find the most meaningful rewards.

“As he navigates middle age, love and small talk, he dispenses with self-help platitudes and wonders if perhaps we need to more comfortably embrace uncertainty. Is anxiety in fact a pointer for growth?”

Derren Brown: Showman

British illusionist wows audience with his most personal show to date.

As we take our seats in Aberdeen’s His Majesty’s Theatre for Derren Brown ’s Showman , a nervous excitement fills the room. It’s been five years since Brown toured, and expectations are perhaps a little too high. Might his ability to render audiences speechless have lessened over time? Will this latest show be just as spellbinding as the others? Will our jaws drop in awe? 1,400 people want to know.

There is a lot to admire about the British illusionist. Ever since he made his TV debut with Derren Brown: Mind Control 20 years ago, he’s been stunning audiences with his mind-boggling tricks. But it’s not just his talent for magic and psychological techniques that captivate crowds; Brown is a master of misdirection, as well as being endlessly charming and insanely smart too – no wonder he’s been banned from casinos across the UK.

The show starts and the jaw dropping awe begins. During the show, Brown bans the audience from disclosing any details of the show. And yes, that includes reviewers too. He’s very polite about it, but he’s also firm. He’s right of course. Giving away details of a show like this one, will ruin the magic for future audience members. But still…

So, what can this review tell you is that this is not a cheap throwaway show that you’ll forget in a day or two. Showman is his most personal tour to date and that makes the experience tremendously special. The story behind the show gives every trick, every quip and every turn, a deeper meaning – it connects the audience to Brown and it connect us to each other too.

Brown’s presence is electric, his showmanship captivating. We can’t tear our eyes away from him – and nor do we want to. As the curtain rises at half time, the room is filled with murmurs as every person turns to their neighbour and asks – How did he just do that? As we leave the theatre at the end, groups of people huddle outside, scratching their heads, trying to figure out what the hell they’ve just seen.

I suppose this review can tell you about the standing ovation, and that the show is Brown’s best work yet. It can tell you that Showman will meet your expectations, and it’ll raise them again too.

Magician Derren Brown: The only thing I can promise audiences at Edinburgh show is deception

THE illusionist is taking his latest stage show, Infamous, to Edinburgh this week for a six-night residency at the city's Playhouse Theatre.

WHEN Derren Brown asks for your trust, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to duck behind the sofa.

He is, after all, a man who has played Russian Roulette live on TV, turned a group of mild-mannered middle managers into armed robbers and convinced a couch potato he was one of the survivors of a zombie apocalypse.

It’s all been above board – he obviously survived Russian Roulette, nothing was actually stolen in the robbery, and the apocalypse was a liberating, if terrifying, experience for the willing victim – but he can make no such promises about his latest stage show, Infamous, which is heading to Edinburgh this week for a six-night residency at the city’s Playhouse Theatre.

If you go and see him, you will be deceived and that’s about all he can tell you. As for the rest, the audience will just have to trust him.

He said: “What is the show? That’s the trouble. I have to keep the show a secret because otherwise it would ruin the surprises. Like the other shows it is based on audience participation but it has a different feel to previous shows, it’s more stripped down. It is a move away from the template we had kind of established.

“With TV, if you are going to follow somebody’s journey for a couple of hours, as you did in Apocalypse, it has got to be a balance of being somebody who you don’t necessarily like at the beginning but will like soon enough so you are going to be rooting for them. It has to be somebody that you could tell needed to change.

“On stage, of course, I don’t have choice at all. I choose people by throwing frisbees out to people and I have to work with whoever comes up. Sometimes they are going to be responsive to techniques I am using, sometimes they are not and I have to change the way I am doing it but the point of a stage show really is to randomise the audience selection.

“One of the reasons why I don’t really do the tricks so much on TV and save them for the stage is because you never really know what you are watching in TV. You are watching something which, of course, has to be edited, short of it being a live steam feed, and if you see something that seems highly ambitious, amazing or impossible, obviously people are going to get highly sceptical.

“The irony is the stuff I am doing on TV is completely honest, there is no deception involved, whereas the stage show, because it is rooted in magic and a love of magic, of course there is deception involved. I still draw the line at stooges and what not, nobody is playing along. It’s funny, but I have drifted into two different worlds: the TV has become more like a reality programme while the stage show is still rooted in the golden age of magic. That’s one joy of being on stage.”

Infamous is Derren’s sixth show since 2003. He has toured every year since then and played to more than two million people.

He has won two Olivier Awards along the way, for Something Wicked This Way Comes in 2006 and last year’s acclaimed show, Svengali.

The show has seen him reunited with his close collaborator Andy Nyman, although inspiration is never hard to find.

Derren says he never uses stooges in his act

He said: “It has been a really good experience to get back together and work together again. Equally it was really good to break it up for a bit and make the show with somebody else.

“Svengali was a group effort, there was a whole team of us doing it. This has gone back to just two of us and I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s been a good move. We just try to come up with ideas that we think will deliver, and over deliver and can’t really repeat things from before. There is a lot of good ideas, you just have to find them.

“With the TV shows, obviously there are some things that are too similar to what we have done before, but generally speaking it is just things that feel important or worthwhile at the time and there is always going to be something like that.

“With the stage show, there is a little bit of pressure, you have to come up with a really good scenario to have to make sure you are not doing stuff that feels too familiar but it’s never been a problem.

“It’s always about moving stuff forward. Otherwise, if you start worrying too much about doing something better than what you have done before then things just get bigger and bigger and madder and madder and lose any sense of resonance or intelligence. I’ve never tried to outdo myself.

“What’s happened over time is the shows have just changed, I think they have grown up and every couple of years I have done something very different and taken it in a different direction. I think keeping fresh is a much saner and easier route, rather than trying to constantly outdo yourself.”

Now 42, his own inspiration began when, at university, he saw a hypnotist at work and was, in a sense, spellbound. He said: “It worked really well and I thought it was the most amazing thing I’d seen, and probably at some level the desire to perform, to control, obviously with hypnosis, was important to me, impressing people and all those things.

“So as the shows have moved over the years, and they have moved away from that because I have moved away from that kind of desire to impress, but I think it was that, a fortuitous coincidence of seeing a performer who triggered something in me.”

Edinburgh is his next port of call on the Enigma tour and he is particularly looking forward to playing the capital.

He said: “Edinburgh is an absolute highlight of the tour. It is one of the great cities on tour in terms of a place with a huge sense of community and bright, lively audiences – and theatres where you can hear the audiences. Dublin is another one and Bristol too and I am not doing either this tour, so Edinburgh is genuinely, absolutely the highlight.”

Of course, the dark manipulator of magic could just be playing with our minds. Then again, maybe not. When he is not on stage, he focuses very much on being a regular person, albeit one with a lot of fans.

He said: “I find that people are nice. You can’t complain when you are well-known and people decide they already like you. It’s a nice aspect to the world. Equally, if people are going to chase you down the street asking you to show them a trick, that’s a bit rude, but they are probably a bit rude anyway.

“I don’t play up to it. I don’t think of that side of myself in social situations because it would be such a weird way of behaving. Such a controlling thing. I’m not weirdly or subliminally controlling people. That’s my job. That’s what I go out and do for a living and I love doing it in the context of a stage show or a TV show or whatever, but in real life I just stay away from it.”
