India is a riot of color; a magical, mind-boggling place where desert forts rise from the dust, pilgrims flock to bathe in the sacred Ganges and tigers still roam free in the forests. Even the most experienced travellers are likely to feel out of their depth here – but that’s half the fun. Embrace the chaos and know that for every jam-packed overnight train journey and crowded Delhi market, there’s a palm-fringed beach, serene ashram or hilltop tea plantation with your name on it.

What vaccinations do I need to visit India?

Proof of a yellow fever vaccination will be required upon entry to India from a range of different countries.

Other recommended vaccinations include diphtheria, hepatitis a, hepatitis b, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, typhoid, and tetanus.

When’s the best time to visit India?

India is a vast country, so it really depends on where you are when it comes to the best time to visit. Generally though, October to February brings the most pleasant weather. March to June often becomes unbearably hot — particularly in Rajasthan and the central plains — and July to late September is the monsoon season, when downpours can be torrential.

What’s the weather like in India?

Bear in mind that India is huge, so the weather will completely depend on where you are in the country at any given time. As an overview though, December to March sees warm and sunny temperatures with little to no rain across the country. April, May, and early June are baking hot and temperatures can sometimes soar to 48°C (118°F).

Most regions see the summer monsoon arrive from late June to September, with large areas of western and central India receiving more than 90% of their total annual rainfall. October onwards, the rainy season ends and temperatures are warm and pleasant.

However, the Himalayas see a completely different weather pattern. Temperatures from November to March can often be sub-zero, and snow doesn’t melt until around late March. April to June sees warm temperatures, clear skies, and little rain, while July, August, and September see temperatures soar.

Is there tipping in India?

It is customary in India to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service. Tipping is expected, though not compulsory, and shows an expression of satisfaction with the people helping you on your tour.

There are several times during the trip where there's an opportunity to tip the local guides or drivers we use. You may do this individually, or your CEO will offer to collect the money and tip as a group. Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from USD $1-2 per person, per day depending on the quality and length of the service.

Tipping your G Adventures CEO is also very much appreciated. The amount is entirely a personal preference; however, as a guideline, USD $20-30 per person, per week is our recommendation in the region. If you felt your CEO did an especially outstanding job, any additional amount is always welcome.

What’s internet access like in India?

In large towns and cities, internet and Wi-Fi access tends to be fairly good in India. However, in rural areas like the Himalayas, be prepared for it to be more limited.

Are there ATMs in India?

ATMs are widely available in large cities and towns, and both Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted. Check with your bank to see how much you may be charged for withdrawals — consider bringing cash in USD too. Major credit cards are accepted in most shops, but they may charge a 2-4% transaction fee.

Is India LGBTQ+-friendly?

LGBTQ+ rights are complex in India, and much of the country still remains fairly conservative — particularly in rural areas of the country. Use discretion and we’d recommend avoiding public displays of affection.

What language is spoken in India?

There are 22 different officially-recognized languages spoken in India, ranging from Punjabi and Gujarati to Kashmiri and Bengali. The most widely-spoken languages are Hindi (spoken by over 500 million) and English.

Is the tap water in India safe to drink?

In a word, no, tap water in India is never safe to drink. Bottled water is widely available and costs around 15-20 INR.

Please note, however, that all drinks provided on our tours are safe to drink (including drinks with ice), as well as the water in most hotels and restaurants visited on tour. If in doubt, please ask your CEO for further info.

Is India safe?

India is generally a safe country to visit, and most people have no problems while there. However, it always pays to be aware of petty crime (like pickpocketing), tourist scams, and touts — particularly in larger cities.

Female travellers should also be aware that harassment, while uncommon, can sometimes occur. Dress modestly and always take a taxi if you’re travelling alone after dark.

Best time to visit india.

Due to India's size and topography, the climate varies from place to place but the best time to visit, generally speaking, is in the winter from December until early March. During the coolest months (December-January), temperatures can get quite cold in Delhi and in the north, especially at night. The whole country tends to get very hot from April onwards and most regions experience the summer from late May to around October. The summer offers hot and humid conditions, although this is considered one of the best times to visit Ladakh and the hills.

Culture and customs

India is one of the world’s oldest civilizations with a culture steeped in ancient beliefs and traditions. Religion also plays a massive role in everyday life with 80% of the population practicing Hinduism while the remaining 20% is divided into Muslim (India has the world’s second-largest Muslim population), Christian, Sikhism and Buddhist populations.

At its core, India remains a deeply conservative nation; however, it has been touched by rapid modernization and Western influences in recent years. Some families still adhere to a traditional structure (especially in more rural areas) with generations living under the same roof, the eldest male at the head of the family and arranged marriages. But this is becoming less and less popular, particularly in larger cities, where Western ideas and societal shifts heavily influence the culture due to things like Bollywood films.

While some behavioral standards remain the same (public displays of affection are still taboo), it’s important to keep in mind that with more than one billion people speaking over 122 languages across 28 states and seven territories, it’s impossible to describe one unified culture for the entire nations and the character of India’s people can vary greatly from city to city.

Surely there isn't a more iconic image of India than the Taj Mahal. It's spectacular and soul-stirring, but words simply aren't enough to describe the beauty of this immense mausoleum (even when it's packed with tourists). Best known as a monument to love and loss, the 17th-century building was built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his second wife – a bold declaration of love, indeed!

2. Udaipur, Rajasthan

Welcome to Udaipur, India's most romantic city that could easily give Venice a run for its money. You'll undoubtedly fall in love as you explore its grand marble palaces, shimmering lakes, and winding alleys filled with cozy chai bars and dizzying bazaars. It's also a popular hub for Indian artists, dancers, and musicians whose talents will pull you deeper under Udaipur's spell.

3. Ranthambhore National Park

Ranthambhore National Park was once a famous hunting ground for the Maharajas of Jaipur, but these days it's a haven for wildlife. Jump into a 4WD and search for Bengal tigers, hyenas, jackals, deer, langurs, marsh crocodiles and more. You can also hike up to the stunning ruins of the 10th-century fort or experience the peace and tranquillity of the ancient Ganesh temple (one of the oldest temples in India).

4. Kerala Backwaters

Surrounded by tea and coffee plantations and connected by a series of blissful, palm-shaded backwaters, Kerala is a peaceful oasis deep within India's colorful chaos. Float along the dreamy waters of rural Kerala on a houseboat, paddle over to an island village on a pole boat for an overnight homestay with a local family, and enjoy traditional Keralan food served on a banana leaf.

Varanasi is a place that will be etched in your memory long after your time in India is over. Uncover the stories and secrets of this holy city with your local guide, get lost in the laneways, cruise along the golden Ganges at dawn, or witness ancient religious traditions and groups of pilgrims praying in the river. While traveling through India, on a tour or otherwise, it’s expected one would tip porters, drivers, restaurant staff and other service workers given the low wages they earn.

What is the internet access like in India?

Internet access is generally very good in India, with most cafes, restaurants and accommodations offering free wi-fi, even in the more rural areas. There is also good phone coverage for data use if you choose to purchase a local SIM card to stay connected for the duration of your India tour.

If you do wish to purchase a local SIM in India, make sure your phone has been unlocked before your tour begins. There are quite a number of carriers that are all very competitive, but Airtel is probably the best option for travelers. You’ll need to a copy of your passport and visa to pick up a SIM, and the process can sometimes be a hassle, but rates in India are very affordable given the competition.

Can I use my cell phone while in India?

Yes, you’ll be able to use your cell phone while on an India tour, but only if you have activated global roaming or purchased a local SIM card.

What are the toilets like in India?

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in India. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as they are usually not provided. Flushable, Western-style toilets can be found in up-market restaurants, some higher-end hotels and in some tourist areas.

You could say that India's Taj Mahal is so famous that it needs no introduction… but it's so compelling a destination that it's hard not to talk about it. Considered the greatest achievement of Indo-Islamic architecture, this exquisite, domed, white marble mausoleum complex in Agra was commissioned in 1632 and completed two decades later as the tomb and memorial of Mumtaz Mahal, the favorite wife of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Constructed at a cost that would be upwards of USD $825 million today, it ranks among history's most expensive declarations of love. Along with touring it with a local guide, you'll also see it from your hotel room!

The Khajuraho Temples, India

The Indian town of Madya Pradesh is home to what today is known as the Khajuraho Group of Monuments. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, which you'll visit with Tauck, comprises a famous group of Hindu, Jain and Buddhist temples built between the 10th and 11th centuries by the Chandela Rajput Dynasty, praised by UNESCO for striking a perfect balance between architecture and sculpture... and famous both for their nagara-style symbolism, and the provocative nature of the statuary decorating many of the temples. Of the 85 or so temples that historians believed once stood in this area, only 25 have survived the ravages of time.
