What travelers are saying

"I had purchased a Greek Island trip with Roads Scholar for the end of October 2022. I did not purchase travel insurance until after I fell playing pickleball and broke my pelvis, wrist, and sacrum. I purchased the insurance past the deadline and they still accepted it! I felt I could still do the trip as it was over 2 months away. I felt I might need some health protection while I was there. Then it started to become obvious that I could not do this trip…it would become too risky for me! So I cancelled the trip. The company had at least 1 1/2 to 2 months to fill that slot of mine with someone else. I asked for credit for another trip and they refused as it was past the deadline. They have not given me credit for another trip. I feel that under the circumstances that it would be good customer service to at least give me some credit for another trip. They have $6400 of my money that I never got to use."

"My husband and I booked the Yellowstone tour with Tauck expecting so much more with the accommodations, food, and tour director based on the price point. We were sadly disappointed but still tried to enjoy the experience. Rooms were dirty, food were often buffets and other group dinners with some food inedible. We noticed other tours staying in our hotels and paying much less for their tours. One positive was we never touched our luggage which was nice but my small suitcase was damaged during one transfer. Word to the wise… read their emails thoroughly as the email we received a few weeks before our trip reads like a disclaimer for poor service and accommodations."

Escorted & Package Tours in Montana

Escorted tours are structured group tours, with a group leader. The price usually includes everything from airfare to hotels, meals, tours, admission costs, and local transportation.

Despite the fact that escorted tours require big deposits and predetermine hotels, restaurants, and itineraries, many people derive security and peace of mind from the structure they offer. Escorted tours -- whether they're navigated by bus, motorcoach, train, or boat -- let travelers sit back and enjoy the trip without having to drive or worry about details. They take you to the maximum number of sights in the minimum amount of time with the least amount of hassle. They're particularly convenient for people with limited mobility and they can be a great way to make new friends.

On the downside, you'll have little opportunity for serendipitous interactions with locals. The tours can be jampacked with activities, leaving little room for individual sightseeing, whim, or adventure -- plus they often focus on the heavily touristed sites, so you miss out on many a lesser-known gem.

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

6 days | a nature-packed adventure in the mountains of montana.

Road and Tunnel with Valley View, Glacier National Park, USA

Taking you from Bozeman to Missoula via mountains, rivers, glaciers and lakes, this six-day trip showcases the customs and history of Native American culture and the natural beauty of Montana. With a knowledgeable leader to guide the way, you’ll experience a landscape shaped by the elements over thousands of years as you immerse yourself in local history and enjoy delicious picnic lunches surrounded by the scenic splendour of mountain peaks. Explore museums, head out on a scenic river cruise, explore the mountains on hikes and get your heart pumping on an exhilarating rafting experience.

Trip overview

  • Raft down the Flathead River in Glacier National Park – a wilderness area in Montana’s Rocky Mountains – and soak up the views from a different perspective.
  • Spend a full day learning about Native American history in First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park from a member of the Blackfeet tribe, hiking in Giant Springs State Park and exploring the land and culture.
  • Follow in the path of Lewis and Clark exploring the Gates of the Mountains on a scenic river cruise along the Missouri River.
  • Spend a full day on a locally guided hike through the incredible Glacier National Park, where you’ll stand at the foot of waterfalls, walk under the canopy of ancient forests, and enjoy a homemade lunch in the wilderness.
  • End your trip in Missoula with an included lunch and beer tasting at a local brewery, where you’ll sample some local Montana huckleberry beer.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll learn about our Intrepid Foundation partner, the Cultural Heritage Economic Alliance. Donations help them create inclusive and equitable opportunities for Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) tourism businesses. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
  • This trip includes a whitewater rafting experience in which you will be required to manoeuvre in and out of a raft, and a guided hike with a distance of 10.5 km (6.5 mi). While the included activities do not require any special physical preparation for most travelers, at least a moderate level of fitness is needed to make the most out of the trip.
  • June departures may include a guided e-biking experience on Glacier National Park's iconic Going to the Sun Road instead of the full day hike if the high passes are not yet fully cleared of snow.
  • You may also want to check out our Great American West trip if you have a longer time to explore the region:

Welcome to Montana! Your adventure begins in Bozeman at 10 am with a welcome meeting – this Rocky Mountains town is the perfect starting point for exploring Montana’s history and natural beauty. After your meeting, visit the Museum of the Rockies, a Smithsonian Affiliate Museum that’s famous for its world-class dinosaur exhibits. After a bit of culture to get you going, you’ll head to Helena, where you spend the night. When you arrive in the capital of Montana, you might like to head out for dinner with your group.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Bozeman – Museum of the Rockies

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Your travel time today will be approximately 2 hours.

After breakfast, you’ll follow in the footsteps of the explorers Lewis and Clark and venture to the Gates of the Mountains on a scenic river cruise. You’ll sail alongside limestone cliffs to a set of towering stone walls which appear to open like a gate as your boat approaches. Little has changed since the two explorers first visited this stretch of the Missouri River, and the region’s untouched beauty remains. Your night is free in Helena to rest and recharge or find a good dinner spot – your leader is always on hand with suggestions.

  • Helena - Lewis and Clark River Cruise

After an early breakfast, hit the road and drive to First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park – home to the largest buffalo jump in America, used as a hunting tool by Native American tribes for at least 1000 years. This is a special and unique experience to learn about the history of the land firsthand. Get to know the landscape with a member of the Blackfeet tribe, who will take you on a full day experience including hikes, walks, talks and a cultural exchange on their homelands. Then, sit down and soak up the scenery over an included lunch where you can ask questions and learn more. Spend the night in Great Falls, where you’re free for dinner.

  • Great Falls - Hikes with Blackfeet Nation guide

Your travel time today will be approximately 1.5 hours.

This morning, you’ll hit the road again after breakfast. Known as the ‘Crown of the Continent’, Glacier National Park offers an impressive array of activities for lovers of nature and the great outdoors. Today, you’ll board a raft and enjoy an exhilarating (and splashy) rafting experience down the Flathead River with an expert local guide – a must-do in this area! Then head into the town of Whitefish, where you’ll spend the night. After an action-packed day, feel free to relax and recharge, or chat with your leader for the best dinner recommendations in town.

  • Glacier National Park – Scenic Whitewater Rafting

Your travel time today will be approximately 3.5 hours.

The rafting experience covers 12.8 km (8 miles) of the Flathead River with 9 class 2 and 3 rapids. This excursion is classified as moderate rafting, and no experience is necessary. Rafters can expect to get wet during this excursion, but wet suits and/or splash gear are available at no additional charge. Helmets are mandatory and provided. You can paddle with the crew or simply sit back and enjoy the adventure.

After breakfast this morning, you'll take on a full day locally-guided nature hike in Glacier National Park – a wilderness area in Montana’s Rocky Mountains, with glacier-carved peaks and valleys running to the Canadian border. First, we'll drive the iconic Going to the Sun Road to the trailhead where we'll begin our hike. Meander through sun dappled forests to the base of two waterfalls as you hear from your guide about the history of the people who have called Glacier National Park home. Stopping for a homemade picnic lunch with your group, soak up the beauty of your surroundings before making your way back along the trail. Tonight, you may like to drop into one of the local craft breweries or restaurants for dinner.

  • Glacier National Park - Full Day Guided Hike with Lunch

Today's guided hike is considered easy-moderately difficult and taken at a leisurely pace with time for breaks and a one hour stop for an included lunch. Your trekking distance today will be approximately 10.5 km (6.5 mi) with an elevation gain of 236 m (775 ft).

JUNE DEPARTURES: Glacier National Park roads do not fully open to vehicles until all snow is cleared from the high alpine passes. The e-biking typically lasts 4-5 hours and we ride 16-42 miles depending on road conditions. The minimum age to ride an e-bike is 18 years old.

Enjoy a morning at leisure before hitting the road to Missoula. When you arrive, enjoy one last meal with your group to celebrate all you’ve done in this jam-packed adventure. Head to a local brewery and taste some local Montana huckleberry beer over an included lunch. Your adventure will end at around 3 pm.

Day 1: Bozeman

Welcome to Bozeman! This Rocky Mountains town is the perfect jumping off point for exploring the history and natural beauty of Montana. Join your group at 10am for a Welcome Meeting then get ready to stretch your legs on a hike that’s easy on the legs and even easier on the eyes. Wave to kayakers along the trail as you join your leader for a stroll along the Gallatin River where mighty cliffs loom overhead and moss-covered boulders line the river banks. Stop to enjoy picnic lunch before following in the footsteps of the explorers Lewis and Clark and venture to the Gates of the Mountains on a scenic river cruise. You’ll sail alongside limestone cliffs to a set of towering stone walls which appear to open like a gate as your boat approaches. Little has changed since the two explorers first visited this stretch of the Missouri River and the region’s untouched beauty remains.

Day 2: Helena

After breakfast, hit the road to the Lewis and Clark National Forest where you will enjoy a hike and inhale the scent of the conifers as you stroll through woody valleys and admire high mountains and grassy meadows. After lunch we will continue on our way to Great Falls for our overnight stay. Tonight, enjoy a relaxing evening at your accommodation or perhaps share a meal together.

Day 3: Badger-Two Medicine region

After an early breakfast, hit the road and enjoy the scenery on the drive from Great Falls to Badger-Two Medicine. The Badger-Two Medicine region is located at the intersection of the Blackfeet Reservation, Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. Upon arrival we will have a traditional First Nations lunch then have the privilege of joining a local First Nations guide for a half-day hike which offers an insight into the Blackfeet Native American people and culture and explores the secluded wilderness of Badger Two Medicine. Learn about tribal customs, histories, and stories while experiencing a land filled with wildlife, wildflowers, alpine lakes, and mountain peaks. We then make our way to Whitefish were we will base ourselves for 2 nights and our gateway to Glacier National Park. The evening is yours to enjoy as you please.

Day 4: Glacier National Park

Known as the ‘Crown of the Continent’, Glacier National Park offers an impressive array of activities for lovers of nature and the great outdoors. Here you can stroll past carpets of wildflowers, raft along rushing rivers, hike along mountain trails or admire the mountains reflected in crystal clear lakes. Choose your own adventure or enjoy a group hike through the park, with a picnic lunch to enjoy at one of the many scenic spots along the way. There is also the option to join a rafting tour which offers a different perspective on this renowned National Park. Tonight, keep your eyes on the skies to possibly catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis which can be seen here throughout the year.

Day 5: Whitefish

After breakfast, jump in your vehicle and head back into Glacier National park with its towering mountains, sweeping valleys, tumbling waterfalls, colourful wildflowers, and wildlife spotting galore there is plenty to see on your second day. Admire the sparkling waters of Lake McDonald, take in the highest point on the mountain at Logan Pass and see Jackson Glacier sparkling in the distance. Your leader will choose the perfect spot for a scenic picnic lunch. Keep your camera handy as there will be plenty of photo stops along the way. Back in Whitefish, why not try one of the local craft breweries or resturants for dinner.

Day 6: Missoula

Enjoy a morning at leisure before hitting the road to Missoula, with a stop along the way for a walk alongside the serene waters of Flathead Lake. Stop off for one last lunch and perhaps take the time to look back with you group on all you’ve seen and done in the past week. Then, it’s onto Missoula where the trip finishes at 3pm and your Montana adventure will come to an end.

Rafting adventure along the Snake River, surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Tetons

Visit to the Mormon Row Historic District inside Grand Teton National Park

SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Guests should be able to easily walk one to two miles, which may include climbing one or two flights of stairs and walking over uneven pavement, groomed hiking trails or cobblestones. Standing up to one hour or more may be required.

Often robust – may include long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times.

Legendary Journeys and Adventures

The soul of the American West... Naturally inspiring, the landscapes of the American West challenge the imagination with jaw-dropping canyons, gurgling mud pots, geysers, and wide-open spaces... while towering mountains are a study in contrast, harboring wildlife and man-made wonders.

The tauck difference in the national parks, a day at ta guest ranch, a taste of the cowboy life at a working wyoming ranch.

Make your way through Wyoming's breathtaking Bighorn Mountains to an authentic (and fun) western ranch experience at TA Guest Ranch in Buffalo. Homesteaded in 1884, the ranch was once the site of a shootout during the infamous Johnson County War that pitched cowboy against cowboy in these parts in 1892 – you can still see some of the old bullet holes! But today's visit will be a peaceful one… where you can choose to meet a horse whisperer, learn roping techniques from real cowboys, ride in a horse-drawn wagon, or saddle up for a horseback ride... and enjoy a private lunch on the ranch.

A night at the rodeo

Attend the exciting cody nite rodeo (seasonal, june – august).

Way out here in Wyoming, nothing promises more real Western fun than an honest-to-goodness rodeo... especially in a town named for the legendary Wild West showman, "Buffalo Bill" Cody, and often called the "Rodeo Capital of the World." Established in 1938 and operating June through August, the Cody Nite Rodeo is the world's longest-running nightly rodeo. Get set for an evening filled with bull riding, saddle bronco riding, team roping, barrel racing, rodeo clowns, and a "calf scramble" for kids 12 and under.

Old Faithful Inn

Stay in a classic national historic landmark in yellowstone national park.

One of the largest log structures in the world, Old Faithful Inn was designated a National Historic Landmark. Built in 1904 of native lodgepole pine – and the epitome of the "National Park Rustic" architectural style – it is set within walking distance of Old Faithful Geyser, just one of Yellowstone's many natural wonders... including geysers, fumaroles and boiling hot springs.

This relatively untamed territory makes you proud of those who had the foresight to set aside the space for National Parks.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks begins and ends in the U.S.

Real ID Act - Effective May 7, 2025

Beginning in May 2025, some state IDs will no longer permit you to board a domestic flight. Currently, some states are compliant, some have received extensions, and some are not compliant.  Click here  to see the status of your state. If your state license is not compliant, you can use a passport in lieu of a valid state ID.

Please Note:  The federal government has extended the deadline to May 7, 2025 for domestic airline passengers to secure a Real ID driver's license for use as identification at the airport. Travelers without a verified license or ID card will also have the option of showing other identity documents, such as a passport or military ID to board a plane.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally,   you should contact an embassy or consulate of the U.S. to determine what travel documentation is necessary. You may also log on to the U.S. State Department's Internet site by clicking  here.

If you are traveling by air to join and/or depart from this tour within the U.S., please read the section entitled Airline Security Measures under Additional Information to determine what travel documentation is required.

If you are a citizen of the U.S. or Canada who travels frequently between the two countries, you may benefit from the NEXUS program, which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at a NEXUS kiosk at several airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. For further information, you may log on to the Nexus Internet website by clicking here . Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify Tauck as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

If you are a resident of another country traveling to or within the U.S., we suggest that contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations and medications for vaccine-preventable diseases and other diseases for which you might be at risk when you reach your destination in the U.S. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here.

To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

Some of the excursions on this tour are:

  • Whitewater rafting on the Snake River, the journey is roughly 2 hours and requires stepping in and out of an inflatable raft
  • Guided horseback riding on a working cattle ranch, guests are required to show ability to mount/unmount and for safety reasons, a weight restriction of 225 pounds is in place.

There are no elevators at The Ranch at Ucross or at the Holiday Inn® Cody at Buffalo Bill Village, and while none of the planned activities are especially strenuous or difficult, we urge caution when engaging in activities at high elevations. If you have a heart condition or lung ailment, please consult your physician before you book your trip.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it. While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

The Jackson Lake Lodge, Old Faithful Inn and Lake Yellowstone Hotel are all non-smoking hotels and a very large fine will be assessed if it is determined that anyone has smoked while on property.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey! You can view the reading list  here .

The high temperatures in the summer months average 70 to 90°F (21 to 32°C) and the lows average 40 to 60°F (4 to 16°C). The overnight temperatures can drop to the freezing point even during the summer at the highest elevations. Rainfall is light to moderate throughout the region. Salt Lake City receives the least amount of rain with an average of less than 1 in (25 mm) per month during summer; Jackson averages 1.5 in (38 mm) and Rapid City averages 2.5 in (63 mm.)

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required.

All of our hotels offer valet laundry service for a fee except for the Old Faithful Inn, Lake Yellowstone Hotel and The Ranch at Ucross.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

The national park lodges do not have televisions or Internet hook-ups, so bring along a good book to read!

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your journey to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (VERY IMPORTANT)
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Long pants or jeans (long pants and closed-toed shoes are required for the horseback riding)
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • A book or e-reader to read in the evening, or downloaded podcasts or video programs to watch during your free time.
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Montana Family Vacation

“Both guides had a fantastic demeanor and were well suited to lead the kids in activities.” Jeff P.

This trip can be booked as a private tour for four or more people, recommended for families with kids aged five and up.

A Note About Family Travel : At Travel Montana a ‘family’ can be so many different things, including multi-generational travel! Grandparents, get out and explore with your grand kids. We welcome aunts and uncles too. Single parents, take your kids on an adventure and also enjoy the company of other adults. Consider going multi-generational—our tours are crafted to offer something for everyone regardless of your interests or activity level, so having different ages and abilities all on the same tour is not just okay, it is what we do.

Discover one of the cutest small towns in one of the biggest states in the country! Our Montana Family Vacation is chock full of family fun, based from a family-friendly hotel in Red Lodge, Montana , Travel Montana’s world headquarters. Have questions about our Family Vacations? Check out our answers.

We start our week with horseback riding with our friends at Elk River Outfitters , suitable for ages 6+, where we’ll head up onto the plateau above town where we’ll get wide-open views of the Beartooth mountains and rolling wheat fields. We’ll take a fun but safe rafting trip down the Stillwater or Yellowstone River. We’ll have age-appropriate hikes, including a trail to an alpine lake on top of the Beartooth Pass, one of America’s scenic highways. You’ll stop to enjoy the beauty of Montana, looking for animal tracks and skipping rocks into lakes. On top of fun outdoor pursuits, you’ll experience an authentic Western Rodeo in nearby Cody, Wyoming (named after Buffalo Bill Cody), pig races, and the Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary. All this takes place in a classic small-town Montana atmosphere with its cute main street, ice cream and candy shops, and fun restaurants.

Organized family tours with Travel Montana are not like a typical family vacation for multiple reasons. We provide a structure that offers group activities when you can enjoy life with your kids while at other times we separate adults and kids, allowing you to have a nice glass of wine with a fancier dinner or a long hike while we take care of your brood.

Speaking of that, vacation is simply easier when our guides are in charge. It is they who are responsible for driving, directions, reservations, planning, and answering “Are we there yet?” We are locals and know the best activities, trails, and restaurants so you don’t have to do the research or guesswork. Join us for some small town family fun in Big Sky Country!

It means you can let our team take care of every detail so you can actually relax and enjoy your vacation!

Trip Highlights

  • Enjoy the family-friendly setting of Red Lodge, Montana - a small town under the Big Sky
  • Hike to waterfalls, around alpine lakes, and up mountain trails in the Beartooth Mountains
  • Horseback ride with sweeping views of the open plains and rugged mountains
  • Drive the stunningly scenic Beartooth All-American Road
  • Pool time, ice cream and a stop at the best candy shop ever for the kids
  • Authentic Western rodeo in Cody, Wyoming

We meet you in Billings, Montana at 9:30 AM and after a brief orientation head to nearby Pictograph Caves State Park to become amateur archaeologists and contemplate the origins of human habitation in Montana.  After a picnic lunch, we'll shuttle to Red Lodge and go straight to our horse camp to meet our wranglers for a 1.5-hour ride up onto the plateau, where we'll have sweeping views of the mountains on one side and plains on the other. This evening we'll dine at Bogarts, a family-friendly local eatery also known for its margaritas. After dinner (depending on the day of the week), we'll reconvene to drive over the hill to watch the pig races at the Bearcreek Saloon - to our knowledge, this is the only place in the country where you can do that! These adorable and humorous races were created to attract tourists but also to raise money for a scholarship fund for local students.

Rise and shine! After breakfast prepared by your guides, we'll drive to the nearby town of Absarokee for a fun and splashy family-friendly raft trip down the Stillwater River. We'll practice our paddling, listening to our raft guides for instructions on what to do and when to do it. On a hot summer day, stopping at our favorite swimming hole will seem like a good idea, won't it? Once back on dry land, we'll enjoy a picnic along the river before returning to Red Lodge. In the afternoon, we'll visit the Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary to see incredible wildlife like wolves, bears, bison, big cats and raptors up close. The sanctuary provides a lifelong home to non-releasable native Montana wildlife while sharing a message of conservation and education. For those who want to play, we can enjoy a leisurely game of disc golf or do a scavenger hunt in town afterwards. Should we tell your kids about the world's greatest candy store, which happens to be on main street in Red Lodge? That is up to you! This evening for dinner, let our guides entertain your kids at the pool with a pizza party while you eat at our favorite local tapas restaurant.

Today is a day for hiking in the Beartooth Mountains. These are some of the most rugged and isolated mountains in the continental United States. Yet, at the same time, there are excellent family hikes. We'll choose one that meanders along the a small creek, meaning we'll make slight uphill progress but never get beyond the skills of our littlest members. (Adults can choose to go ahead a bit more quickly if they wish.) In the afternoon, we'll jump in the van for a drive over the border into Wyoming and the small town of Cody, named for Buffalo Bill. We'll learn about the history by visiting Old Trail Town , where Cody himself started the town, to view a slew of old buildings and artifacts. We'll watch a fun Wild West Show in front of the Cody Hotel and enjoy a western style dinner. After dinner, we'll head over to the Cody Stampede Rodeo , an authentic small-town Western experience. Some of our troop might get a few winks on the drive back into Red Lodge after such a long day.

This morning we will have some free time before we head up into the mountains for a spectacular drive along the Beartooth Highway, a National Scenic Byways All-American Road. This 68-mile road winds its way up and through the Beartooth Mountains, through southwest Montana and northwest Wyoming, and leads into Yellowstone National Park at its Northeast Entrance. We'll not be driving the entire road but we'll stop along the way to stretch our legs, take a sip of some of the freshest water you'll ever drink (right out the side of the mountain!), throw some rocks in a few lakes, and get out for a couple short hikes. Back in town we'll have a final dinner at a taco joint that is beloved by kids and adults.

Today you can choose to sleep in or take a short early morning hike on the bench above Red Lodge with mountain views in every direction. We check out and head back to Billings, arriving in time to take an early afternoon flight back home, or extend your travels by renting a car.

Trip Accommodations

NIGHTS 1 - 4 >> CHATEAU ROUGE / RED LODGE

Located at the foot of the Beartooth - Absaroka Mountains and in walking distance to the center of town, this family-friendly hotel offers comfortable condo-style accommodations and an indoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi. It is perfect for families.

Arrival & Departure

We meet you at 9:30 AM at the Northern Hotel in Billings on the first day of the trip, allowing us to maximize our day. This means you will most likely need to arrive the day before, as there are limited flight options that arrive before the tour start time. The last day of the tour we will drop you off at the Billings airport by noon, making it possible to book your flight home after 1:00 pm.

What's Included?

  • One local Travel Montana guide will accompany each trip. Additional guides added depending on group size.
  • For private trips: If your private group has an odd number of participants, the single supplement for the person getting his/her own room becomes mandatory.  You also have the choice to put three people in one room.
  • For public trips: Our trip prices are based on double occupancy. If you are traveling solo, you can pay a supplement to get your own room or we can attempt to match you with another solo traveler of the same gender, in which case a supplement will not be charged if we are successful.

  • All your transportation is included once you meet your guides on the first day.
  • All trail fees and permits are included.

When to Travel

The season for outdoor activities in Red Lodge generally runs from May through September. In the summer months of July and August, highs average 80 degrees so the days can be warm. June and September are about ten degrees cooler, making them a wonderful 70 degrees on average for daytime highs, while in May high temperatures average in the low 60s. In June, the hills are green while, in September, they are a golden brown.

Type of People Who Will Enjoy This Tour

Kids of any age are welcome but this trip is most appropriate for kids five through 18. We as guides can vouch that kids are the true experts at having fun and it makes this tour special for everyone. This trip includes activities that both kids and adults will enjoy, sometimes together and sometimes separately. We know you love your little darlings, but we realize it is nice to have an occasional break for an adult drink or longer hike — our guides are more than happy to oblige you in this! We plan a couple of separate activities and dinners for kids and adults (your older teenagers can make up their minds which group they would like to join these times!). Keep in mind that our definition of family is quite liberal: traditional nuclear families, single parent households, and aunts, uncles, and grandparents are all welcome.

Changes to Your Itinerary

While everything under “What is Included” will remain the same, the actual restaurants, hotels, and activities listed in our itineraries are subject to modifications. Changes that are out of our control are common – a restaurant closes or loses its awesome chef, a winery changes its visiting hours, a hotel gets remodeled, a road or trail undergoes construction. You are entrusting us to create an outstanding vacation for you and so it is possible we may take the liberty of making necessary changes (even at the last minute, during the guides’ scout trip) to the itinerary that will improve your overall trip experience. If there is any one experience that is going to make or break your trip, please discuss this with us in advance! We will attempt to keep our website itinerary as current as possible and communicate any major changes with you in the weeks prior to the tour.

The Best Route From Glacier National Park To Yellowstone Is This Glorious Montana Road Trip

green mountains and river

Montana is sometimes called "the last best place," and for good reason. Its quaint mountain towns and endless nature make it a popular part of the United States. At its northern border shared with Canada, there is the pristine Glacier National Park and at its southern border is Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. A journey between the two is a road trip chock full of must-visit spots in Montana with fun towns and scenery shaped by multiple geologic forces.

Glacier National Park is famous for its wildlife, such as bighorn sheep, bears, and eagles. Of course sightings are not guaranteed, but you can explore the peaks and valleys of the beautiful park that they call home on foot thanks to its multiple hiking trails, or by boat. If you don't have one of your own, check out the park's boat tours offered at Lake McDonald, Many Glacier, Two Medicine, and Rising Sun. These lakes are also major highlights of the park itself. Raft companies can take visitors on guided tours along Flathead River too. While the number of glaciers in this park are dwindling, this "Crown of the Continent" national park  is worth a visit and may inspire you to spread the word about issues facing our climate.

Learn multiple aspects of Montana history in Missoula and Bozeman

T-Rex reconstruction museum exhibit

Let the wilderness of Montana continue to inspire you as you head south on Highway 2 out of Glacier National Park. Switch to Highway 35 to get close to Flathead Lake. Enjoy the lake's scenery by making it a stop on your road trip or by simply driving past it. Connect with Highway 93 to reach Missoula. This town may be small, but it has quite a bit of history. The Historical Museum at Fort Missoula covers everything from the area's indigenous tribes, military history, and the town's dark time as the home of a World War II internment camp for Italian and Japanese people living in the U.S.

Drive southeast on Highway 90 to find Bozeman. Among the larger cities in Montana, Bozeman has a vibrant downtown with plenty of restaurants, shopping and live music. Old buildings like the historic Baxter Hotel built in 1929 and the nearby Gallatin History Museum help you piece together Montana's past. To really go back in time, visit the Museum of the Rockies. Here, you'll see huge dinosaur bones that have been uncovered throughout the Rocky Mountains, exhibits on past exploration of the area, and frontier life.

Hike to a seemingly untouched lake among the mountains

lake in the mountains

The land around Bozeman further solidifies Montana as one the best states for hiking across the U.S. Less than one hour south of Bozeman is Palisade Falls in Hyalite Canyon. If you want to extend your stay beyond a day trip, there are quaint campgrounds along the route as well. Take your pick from Blackmore, Chisholm, and Hood Creek campgrounds clustered around the Hyalite Reservoir, a picturesque body of water with boat ramps, but only allows boats at low speeds. The Palisade Falls trailhead is on Forest Service Road 3165 and is a mostly paved journey leading to the more than 80-foot waterfall.

A more moderate hike but still less than one hour from Bozeman leads to the pristine Lava Lake. While you will gain around 1,600 feet of elevation on this hike, this seemingly untouched paradise is incredibly worth the trip. Detour off of Highway 191 and take Cascade Creek Road to get to the Lava Lake trailhead. The hike is 3 miles each way and traverses through an evergreen forest dotted with small waterfalls. Lava Lake's water is cold, but it is quite a memorable experience to swim at such a high elevation.

Marvel at Yellowstone's unique geologic formations

dramatic canyon with rushing river

If you continue south on Highway 191 from Lava Lake, you can enter Yellowstone National Park through West Yellowstone. If you're coming from Bozeman, choose from this entrance or the northern one through Gardiner. Both towns have lodging options and their park entrances get you close to Yellowstone's Grand Loop Road. Attractions along this road include Grand Prismatic, West Thumb, the Continental Divide and the boardwalk that shows off some of the park's most iconic thermal pools and the Old Faithful geyser. The visitor and education center is nearby where you can learn about how these incredible geologic formations came to life.

Yellowstone National Park's marvels hardly stop there. Yellowstone River has created a huge canyon with the Lower and Upper Falls. To get views of the canyon and the waterfalls, head to Brink of Lower Falls just off of Grand Loop Road. This stopping point gets you to a viewing place right on the top of the waterfall where you can watch and listen as the emerald water gushes over the cliff. For more viewpoints, follow North Rim Drive. As for the Upper Falls, use South Rim Drive to take in more of this mesmerizing Yellowstone feature. No matter what roads you take, be careful of nearby wildlife like elk and bison and share the park with them.
