Influencer's Rant Over French Wine Tour Costs Her

france wine tour cynthia

A YouTube influencer is finding out the hard way that publicly slamming a French wine tour, including by calling for a wine expert's death, isn't the way to hold onto sponsors. On her Aug. 6 Cancelled podcast , Tana Mongeau got into the weeds on her recent visit to France, which included a trip to a Champagne house in an unidentified town. On that tour, the 25-year-old says she wasn't feeling so hot due to being hungover and having stayed up until dawn the night before, and that she hadn't known the wine tour was going to be on foot. Mongeau also didn't love that there wasn't as much wine tasting on the tour as she would've liked.

"I don't want to learn about fertilization of grass in the middle of France in a town of a population of 300 at 8:34am after I've just walked a mile and a half and there's yet to be a glass of wine in my hand," she griped. But it was one other comment in particular that raised the biggest red flag, directed toward oenophile Cynthia Coutu, who was leading the tour. "I literally, I absolutely want her dead. At the hands of me," Mongeau said. To make matters worse, the influencer then inserted her anger over the situation into an ad for a sponsor she read out loud on the air. "With Babbel I could have told Cynthia the wine tour lady to shut the f--- up in her native language," Mongeau said, referencing the e-language platform, per NBC.

She didn't mention Cynthia's last name, but NBC figured out it was Coutu based on the hints Mongeau dropped. Both Coutu and Babbel are now pushing back. Coutu notes that whoever booked Mongeau's tour was given a full itinerary—including a mention that participants should "wear comfortable walking shoes"—and that Mongeau was "extremely disrespectful" during the tour, including donning earbuds to listen to music. Coutu adds she started getting "strange" messages and bad reviews online after Mongeau's podcast, which is when she reported Mongeau's death threats to police.

A rep from Babbel also says they'll be vetting sponsorships more carefully from now on. "This absolutely does not align with Babbel's company values," Matt Horsburgh told NBC in an email. "Tana is obviously not a person who understands or celebrates the differences in cultures, and we regret to be in any way involved with her." How badly will this hurt Mongeau? Last month, Forbes posted a piece on her in which it claimed she may be "impossible to cancel." (More influencer stories.)

OLD SCHOOL JAMS

Chef Cynthia has devised a line of condiments that sprung from her love of the produce market and wine flavors.

While working on wine notes for her classes and private clients, she often felt that the palate descriptors were symbiotic. For example, some of the characteristics of a Burgundian Chardonnay are “ flavors of fall pears with lemon and ginger.”

Sustainability is at the core of my company. We utilize best practices in pursuit of the lowest possible carbon footprint.

The best wine regions in France

SaintÉmilion Bordeaux main square France

France and wine: it’s as natural a combination as peanut butter and jam, or rhubarb and custard. While they may not have invented winemaking (that honour goes to the Georgians, who crushed their first grapes some 8,000 years ago) the French have vinification deeply embedded in their cultural DNA, claiming both the world’s most famous wine regions and its most-loved grape varieties. From the soaring peaks of Jura to the surf-fringed shores of Languedoc, you can hardly visit a corner of this country without catching sight of a neat row of vines.

And yet, despite this constant, the wine tourism experience is never cookie-cutter. You can sip a long-aged Cabernet Sauvignon in a grand Bordeaux château one day, then sit nosing obscure Négrette at a farmer’s table in Cahors the next. Such diversity is thrilling stuff for any traveller, but particularly the thirsty ones. These are the best wine regions to visit in France. Please do note: when planning your tours and tastings, it’s always best to contact wineries in advance as some only open by appointment.

Cluny Abbey Burgundy

Best for: natural wine

Not so long ago, wine snobs turned up their noses at this northern Burgundian sub-region, known for its unaged “nouveau” wines. But the past decade has seen a tide change, as younger, ambitious producers use the fruity local Gamay grape to craft seriously interesting – and great-value – natural wines. Centre your explorations around the Cru village of Morgon, interjecting jaunts into vine-carpeted scenery with sips from cult domaines like Marcel Lapierre , Jean Foillard, Jean-Paul Thévenet and Guy Breton. Their wines are light, lively, low-alcohol – the perfect refresher after a day touring Benedictine monastery Abbaye de Cluny or pretty stone villages Bagnol and Oingt.

Champagne vineyards Reims France

Best for: wow-factor cellars

In the twin Champagne centres of Reims and Épernay, both an easy train ride east of Paris, the attraction isn’t the vineyards. Instead it’s what’s deep beneath the surface: vast networks of ancient crayères – chalk-mines-turned-cellars – where the world’s most famous sparkling wine slowly ages. Tour cavernous Gallo-Roman vaults 18m underground at Taittinger , looking out for WWI graffiti among the immaculate rows of wooden barrels. At Ruinart you’ll get a lavish house and garden to enjoy alongside a tasting of their signature Blanc de Blanc, and at Gosset a two-hectare park with beehives and seasonal art exhibitions.

Ros Côtes de Provence France

Côtes de Provence

Best for: rosé-tinted romance

Yachts bobbing on blue surf, wafts of lavender on a sun-warmed breeze, lazy games of pétanque in a village square – Provence is a mood as much as it is a wine region. The wider area stretches from Cannes to the Alpilles mountains near Arles, with red, white and sparkling wines all in the mix. But if, to you, Provence means rosé, make for the ultra-pale heartland in Côtes de Provence, which radiates inland from the coast around chic Saint-Tropez. Maison Mirabeau ’s 20-hectare estate is studded with umbrella pines and chestnut groves, while Château d’Esclans hosts private tastings featuring its popular Whispering Angel blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Rolle.

ChâteauChâlon vineyard Jura FrancheComt

Best for: stunning scenery

The EU's new hand luggage rule starts next week – here's what you need to know

Kissing the Swiss border and framed by a sub-alpine landscape of forested slopes and chocolate-box mountain villages, the smallest wine region in France dances to its own beat. Its unusual vin jaune (yellow wine), made in an oxidative style from obscure local varietal Savagnin, is fashionable among wine geeks for its nutty, briny character – a dreamy match for local fare such as Comté cheese. Vineyards are broken up by serene lakes, grazing fields of cows and dense forests dotted with wood-clad cabins. Savour it all in between tastings at the likes of Domaine Rolet and Domaine de la Pinte.

SaintÉmilion Bordeaux Libournais France

Bordeaux Libournais

Best for: prestige

When it comes to world-famous wine regions, Bordeaux comes top of the lot. The lauded chateaux of the Médoc are largely closed to the average visitor, but Bordeaux Libournais – also known as the Right Bank – is generally more accessible, with smaller producers, approachable wines and an atmospheric central hub in the form of handsome medieval city Saint-Émilion. Tour the wealth of stone monuments in the UNESCO -protected centre, including the monolithic church, Franciscan cloisters and Romanesque keep. Then check out the slick vinous operation at nearby Château de Ferrand , where experiences range from bike tours to private wine-blending workshops.

Loire Valley Savennieres France

Middle Loire

Best for: diversity

Stretching 600 miles from the heart of France to the Atlantic coast, the entire Loire Valley is too big to tick off on a single trip. So get a taster of the highlights in the diverse Middle Loire, where sub-regions like Saumur, Vouvray and Touraine turn out everything from light-bodied Cabernet Franc to sparkling Chenin Blanc and fruity Sauvignon Blanc. The sightseeing draws of riverside cycling trails, Joan of Arc-era chateau and luxe new hotels (see Les Sources de Cheverny as example) are just as diverse as the vino. Try Bernard Baudry in Chinon or Domaine de la Chevalerie in Bourgueil for sublime reds, or Domaine Huet in Vouvray for all expressions of white, from sparkling to sweet.

Rouffach Alsace HautRhin

Best for: white wine lovers

Beginning just 20 minutes outside the city of Strasbourg – with its photogenic half-timbered houses and cobbled backstreets – easterly Alsace is firmly white wine country. Grapes like Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer and Sylvaner dominate in the family-run cellars strung along the meandering Alsace Wine Route. Make your way from Marlenheim to Thann in the south, sampling en route citrussy, mineral-tinged tipples crafted by historic producers such as 385-year-old Famille Hugel or Domaine Albert Seltz , winemakers since 1576.

Barrels of Cognac in Cognac Charentes France

Best for: brandy

Think of Cognac and wine might not immediately come to mind, but France’s most prestigious brandy is made entirely from grapes – all grown and distilled in vine-carpeted landscapes in the country’s south west. Producers like Courvoisier , Bache Gabrielsen and Delamain all welcome visitors to their operations in the heart of the action around the towns of Cognac and Jarnac. The biggest name of all, Hennessy , also offers Michelin-starred picnics among the vines. Between tastings enjoy the slow pace of life in the laid-back centres, or strike out further to explore thousand-year-old Abbaye de Bassac or for a river cruise along the winding Charente.

CôtedOr

Best for: small producers

For many wine drinkers around the world, the ‘golden slope’ of Burgundy – heartland of both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir – is a holy pilgrimage point. Grand Cru vineyards in communes like Gevrey-Chambertin, Puligny-Montrachet, Pommard and Nuits-St-Georges have perfected expressions of these grape varieties over centuries, and sky-high prices for top bottlings reflect that. Still, with thousands of local producers, most small, there’s plenty to discover beyond the pricier labels. Base yourself in the handsome walled town of Beaune, crowned by ornately tiled former almshouse Hospices de Beaune, then stop off for a tasting at the likes of Château de Pommard .

Albi and its cathedral France

Côtes du Lot

Best for: deep France feels

Want a wine holiday that takes you properly off the beaten track? Make for this lesser-known pocket of the south west, where sleepy towns are untroubled by masses of tourists and the winemaking is down-to-earth and free from pretension. In Cahors, inky purple wines – made from Malbec (locally known as Côt) – are on tap at Château Eugenie , where you can picnic among the vines. In Galliac, sample rare red Prunelard and white Mauzac at Domaine Plageoles . In between, visit prehistoric cave Pech Merle or take in the grandiose brick-built cathedral in Albi.

Vineyards LanguedocRoussillon Roussillon France

Best for: value

France’s largest wine region, Languedoc-Roussillon is also arguably its most underrated, with a diverse crop of grape varieties, wine styles and landscapes ranging from surf-licked beaches to rugged peaks. Affordable land gives winemakers freedom to experiment, spelling a huge selection of interesting bottlings at very fair prices. Sit by the seafront in Sète eating oysters from the neighbouring Étang de Thau while sipping zingy white Picpoul de Pinet; or head into the hills to savour a rich red blend in Saint-Chinian. Producers for your hit list include Château L’Hospitalet and Domaine de la Dourbie .

red and rose wine grapes plant in France

Northern Rhône

Best for: active adventure

With its dramatic steep slopes, the Northern Rhône is the perfect place for those who like to pair fine wines with a dose of active adventure in the form of hiking or cycling. And for red wine lovers, it holds even greater appeal, for this is the birthplace of Syrah. Well-known producers such as Michel Chapoutier and Paul Jaboulet Aîné show off it off at its most elegant. Meanwhile in the hub of Tain l’Hermitage, hugged by the Rhône river and landmark Hermitage hill, more deliciousness awaits on a tour of world-renowned chocolate-maker Valrhona.

Grape Varieties Used to Make Rosé in Provence, France

What constitutes a classic Provencal Rosé wine? What grape varieties go into these wines?

Provence has a number of major grape varietals grown throughout the region. For red wine, these grapes include  Mourvedre  (the main grape used for wine production here),  Grenache Noir ,  Syrah , Carignan, Cinsault, Counoise, Taniat  and  Cabernet Sauvignon . The white grape varietals grown are  Grenache Blanc, Rousanne, Marsanne, Clairette, Bourbulene, Ugni Blance or Trebbiano  and  Rolle  or  Vermentino .

Provence has ideal grape growing conditions with its Mediterranean climate. Mild winters are followed by very warm summers with little rain fall and a significant amount of sun. In fact, this area receives double the hours of sunlight needed for grapes to grow and ripen at more than 3,000 hours of sun per year.

The Mistral winds play an important role in creating the climate of Provence and assisting with keeping the vineyards dry. This helps reduce occurrences of phylloxera by fending off bugs and pests. The winds are essentially Mother Nature’s natural pesticide!

The terroir and soil make up in Provence differs in so many ways, helping to make the wines from this region so unique. With relatively no uniformity, the lands contain limestone mostly in the West, crystalline schist and granite in the East, in addition to clay, sandstone and some volcanic soils.

The Geography & Tasting Notes of Provence

The southernmost boarder backs up to the Cote d’Azure, and in the East you have prime growing conditions on the slopes of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Vines planted on the south facing slopes are offered protection from the damaging winds that can be created by the mistrals highest winds, whilst facing the seaside absorbing the sea’s spray.

One of the most predominant features that can be found in the wines made from this region is the unmistakable aromatic bouquet of lavender, juniper, thyme and rosemary — also known as Garrigue or Maquis. Other defining notes can be that of wild strawberry, raspberry, wet slate, mint, salted watermelon and candied grapefruit.

With its dreamy terrior, sun kissed skin hued wines, and rolling plains wafting of sensual herbs, Provence makes for one of the best and probably underrated places to produce wines!

What Rosé Wines Do You Recommend Drinking?

My go to is  Fleur de Mer ‘Cotes de Provence’, Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah

If you are like me and swoon over Provencal Rosé’s, consider these other regions producing ‘Pink Wines” that will make you think outside of the box.

First, drive roughly 65 miles Northwest of  Marcellie . Kissing the border of the Languedoc you will find the  Tavel region  of France in the  Cotes du Rhone , wine production here is 100% Rosé.

Tavel’s major grape varietals are similar to Provence. Cinsault and Grenache make up most of the production, followed by Syrah and Mourvedre. Here you will also find a Mediterranean climate affected by Mistral winds. In the Western part of Tavel you will find slate covered with chunky limestone. In the East, you’ll find ‘galets roules’ – round stones formed from centuries of flood waters. In the South, expect to see sandy fine-grain soils. Here the wines evoke flavors of raspberry coulee, white pepper, peach, green olive and cherry.

Other regions around the world are also making fantastic Provencal-style Rosé’s!

Try the  Chateau de Trinquevedel, Grenache, Cinsault, Clairette

Let’s take a boat 90 miles from the Italian boarder into the Mediterranean Sea to the  Isle of Corsica . The island is a territorial collective of France, but for many years it belonged to Italy. Many of the region’s winemaking traditions and grape varieties are Italian in origin.

Corsica’s terrain is mountainous, with soils rich in schist, granite, chalky limestone and clay. Most of the islands vineyards are perched along the coastlines. The vines receive an ideal amount of sun per year, at about 2,750 hours.

Major grape varitals grown here are the Nielluccio (ancestor of the Sangeovese), Grenache, Sciacarello and Vermentino. These Rosé’s are produced in the Saignee method. Corsican wines are unlike any you have had with the same grape make up. These wines have notes of green olive brine, fig, chamomile and plum.

My favorite Rosé is from  Maestracci ‘E Prove’, Nielluccio and Sciacarello

Let’s now make our way to the Russian River Valley in  Sonoma County California . Soils here consist of sandstone, loam – “Goldridge soil”, clay and alluvial.

Resting in the heart of Sonoma County near the rugged terrain of the Pacific Ocean you will find the Russian River Valley. This region is known for warm day time temperatures and brisk evening fog rolling off of the Petaluma Gap. Sonoma is famous for its  Chardonnay  and  Pinot Noir , and arguably put the New World on the map for these varietals.

Try the  Inman Family ‘Endless Crush’, Pinot Noir of Rosé

It’s loaded with notes of wild Strawberry, watermelon, ruby grapefruit and honeysuckle.

Trips to Champagne

france wine tour cynthia

Discover the land and the people.

What makes my wine tours different.

Most people just hop on a train to Reims or Epernay and visit the beautiful Gallo-Roman chalk cellars of the big champagne houses. They unfortunately only see the luxury side of champagne, and only learn about the history of a specific house, and only see where the bottles age, and it is often impersonal. You wouldn’t really need me as a guide for that!

The vineyards in the hillsides, cellars and houses were added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2015, so if you leave out the vineyards, you a leaving out an important piece of the puzzle!

  • I encourage people to include at least one off-the-beaten track  visit to the vineyards and the production cellars of a small house. You get to meet the person who grew the grapes and made the champagne and see ALL the steps involved in making champagne, not just the ageing process. If you visit a small house in the morning, you will definitely appreciate your visit to a big house in the afternoon even more!
  • The focus is always is always on champagne houses where women play, or have played, an important role (unless you have a special request) .
  • I am a history nerd so you will learn tons about LE champagne (the wine) and LA Champagne (the region.
  • I am a foodie so I have a great list of places to eat!
  • I try to find the right balance between history, geography, culture, nature, gastronomy, and champagne tastings.
  • I am  flexible and adapt to your needs and desires. I know all the right places to take you if you have reduced mobility, children, want to cycle, love food, art, architecture, etc.

You can check out the Calendar of Events  to see the dates I am already booked for private excursions and definitely not available. Then you can email me  to organise a bespoke trip for you. Tell me as much as you can about what you want, when you want it, how many people you will be, your interests besides tasting champagne (e.g. art, architecture, nature, food), and I will make it happen. Your wish is my command!

Testimonials

"We booked a private tour with Cynthia. Not only did she explain the champagne region to us, but she shared a ton of historical information with us about France, champagne, and art.  We had a wonderful day with her, so much I wish we had booked a more extended tour.  The small champagne house she took us to was incredible.  Not only were the champagnes fantastic but the time they took to show us around was great.  Would highly recommend Cynthia and won't hesitate to do another tour with her." - Adam "Cynthia Coutu, is the BEST Champagne region tour planner.  We worked with her for almost a year to plan an extensive 3 day visit for our family of 9!  She suggested a wonderful itinerary that covered our varied interests, executed it as promised and delivered an experience beyond our expectations.  She is professional, very knowledgeable, friendly and very adaptable.  I highly and wholeheartedly recommend her. You won't be disappointed." - Juana "Cynthia is a tremendous teacher and guide. She planned an excursion to Champagne for me and joined me for part of it--everything was absolutely top-notch. Then I attended her masterclass and learned even more. Delectabulles made my trip! Thank you, Cynthia!" - Jessica "I really can’t say enough good things about Cynthia! We booked a day trip to champagne and the entire day was wonderful! Communication in advance was exceptional, every part of the day was well paced and adapted for our group’s abilities and knowledge. The range and depth of Cynthia’s knowledge is remarkable - she guided us in history, technical champagne making and current affairs. I’ll recommend Cynthia to all my friends on their next trip to Paris!" - Denver

Emilie's planning is so thorough and detailed that not a thing is left to chance. The B and B's were lovely and the hosts delightful; the routes were carefully planned to give us a complete taste of Southern France; and the suggestions for restaurants, shopping and cultural activities were perfect. We have just return from an amazing holiday arranged by France Just for You - visiting Paris, Vimy Ridge, Normandy (D-Day Beaches) and Mont Saint Michel. Emilie listened to what our wishes were and arranged everything in great detail. The accommodations (hotels and bed and breakfasts) all had so much charm and character - the hosts were very welcoming and helpful and treated us like family. We could never have found these ourselves.

The tour guides were extremely knowledgeable and pleasure to be around. Emilie made last minute requests with ease and willingness. The guidebook was filled with so much information and a great memory of our holiday. We would definitely use France Just for You again and will recommend to our friends and family .

We had a truly remarkable adventure across France. France Just For You created an amazing itinerary that captured the essence of France. Their planning and support made the trip effortless and enjoyable. Each B&B offered a home like atmosphere and allowed us to meet people across the many different regions of France. We were able to experience so many different regions and taste the wines and foods of each.

The Women's World Cup was our motivation for going, but it was so much more thanks to Laura and Emelie. There were so many personal touches that made us feel like we were part of a large family. If you want to truly experience France with ease, I highly recommend France Just for You!

My husband was born in France and moved to Australia in 1970 when he was just 5. He went back for the last time in 1980 and had not returned since. In January 2017 I started to formulate an idea to surprise him with a trip back home. Being Australian, we love road trips but without his French language skills I felt a bit scared to start booking hotels etc. Thankfully, a google search came up with Emilie. She helped me surprise my husband and my 16 year old daughter with a trip that will be hard to beat. Ever. What can I say? The kindness that she showed as she helped me shape a trip of a lifetime is beyond words. She helped me to go back to my ancestral roots (even finding a hotel just 50 metres from where my great-grandfather was born!), and a drive through the village where my husband spent his first 5 years. Add to this a list of amazing accommodations, unique parking spots, the most incredible guide books you'll ever seen, and more! As so many others here have mentioned, you get so much more than just a simple travel package with vouchers. The maps, the books, the history, the suggestions - things we will continue to read and delight in for years to come. You know it's been an exceptional holiday when during the loooong journey home (all 30 hours of it!) you can't come up with a single 'best' moment. It was all the best.

Sponsor cuts ties with YouTube star who said she wanted international wine expert 'dead'

Tana Mongeau.

One of YouTube’s top influencers ranted against an internationally recognized French wine expert, leading to targeted hateful comments online, but the expert and tour guide says she was simply doing her job. Now, one of the influencer’s sponsors is cutting ties with the online star.

Tana Mongeau is known for sharing dramatically exaggerated stories about her life as an influencer. This propelled her to fame on YouTube, where she has over 5 million subscribers and a podcast, “Cancelled,” that draws more than half a million listeners every week.

Mongeau’s latest controversy raises questions around the larger consequences of influencers wielding the power of their platform against small businesses. The targets of these attacks often find few means of recourse besides turning back to the internet for help.

In a podcast episode released on Aug. 6, Mongeau spent about 30 minutes explaining what happened during a wine tour she took on a recent trip to France. She revealed the first name of her tour guide, Cynthia, as well as the name of a champagne house in a French town with a population of under 3,000. Mongeau didn’t reveal the guide’s last name, but a Google search for “Cynthia” and “French wine tour” displays the guide’s personal website.

Cynthia Coutu runs her own business, called Delectabulles . She is a certified wine and spirits educator who has been voted “Best Wine Experience in Paris” by Travel and Hospitality Awards, “Wine Expert of the Year” by Luxury Travel Guide Global Awards, and Top 50 Wine Experiences in the World by The Wine Magazine.

During the episode, Mongeau said she was already upset before the tour began because she had stayed up drinking until 6 a.m. She said she had expected the tour to involve vehicles, but it turned out to be a lengthy walking tour.

“Don’t you think you should say ‘Bring your Air Maxes?’” Mongeau said during the podcast,  referencing a popular sneaker and complaining that she was unaware of what the tour would entail.

Mongeau blamed Coutu for not informing their group, but Coutu shared screenshots with NBC News that appeared to show she sent a detailed itinerary ahead of time to Mongeau’s friend, who paid for the tour. Coutu said Mongeau’s friend signed off on the itinerary, which stated,  “You should bring a bottle of water and wear comfortable walking shoes, casual clothes, layers. It will be chilly in the cellars.”

Mongeau said she was angry that Coutu wouldn’t leave her alone during the 12-hour tour, which Mongeau left after about five hours, and that Coutu explained things like the “history of Veuve Clicquot” on the train ride to Dormans, in the Champagne region of France.

Mongeau added that she thought Coutu was condescending toward her and that she had expected to be drinking wine throughout the entire tour.

Eventually, Mongeau said on the podcast, she put her headphones in to listen to music during the tour. Mongeau said Coutu said she was “being extremely disrespectful” and at one point asked her to call a car to take her back to Paris.

Mongeau then started yelling on the podcast: “We paid you!” and “I don’t want to learn about fertilization of grass in the middle of France in a town with a population of 300 at 8:40 a.m. after I’ve just walked a mile and a half and there’s yet to be a glass of wine in my hand.

Mongeau also repeatedly expressed wanting to physically fight, “curb stomp” and even kill the tour guide.

“I literally, I absolutely want her dead. At the hands of me,” Mongeau said during the episode.

When Mongeau read an advertisement for one of the podcast’s sponsors, the language-learning platform Babbel, she included the line, “And with Babbel I could have told Cynthia the wine tour lady to shut the f--- up in her native language.”

On Tuesday, Matt Horsburgh, Babbel’s public relations lead, told NBC News that the company was no longer working with Mongeau and would more carefully vet podcast sponsorships in the future. Mongeau didn’t respond to a request for comment.

“This absolutely does not align with Babbel’s company values,” Horsburgh wrote in an email. “Highlighted here, Tana is obviously not a person who understands or celebrates the differences in cultures and we regret to be in any way involved with her.”

During her interview with NBC News, Coutu said there are cultural differences for wine and spirits professionals in France.

“You have a responsibility and a legal obligation to encourage people to drink responsibly. If you read the small print on my website, it says, ‘You’re encouraged to drink responsibly,’” Coutu said. “So all day, if I wanted to be a responsible professional, I had to promote and encourage that.”

“All of my decisions were, ‘How can I remain as professional as possible?’ and try to make everyone happy,” Coutu added.

Cynthia Coutu.

After the podcast episode was released, Coutu said she started to receive “strange messages” from people on Instagram. One person sent her a link to the podcast. After listening, Coutu said she reported Mongeau’s death threats to the police in Paris, where she lives. She declined to share a copy of the report with NBC News, citing privacy concerns.

NBC News observed more than five negative reviews and comments newly posted on the tour guide’s personal Instagram account, as well as on the Google reviews for the champagne house. Coutu said she read some of the comments, which included some of Mongeau’s fans threatening to hurt her, hurt her business and even find her phone number.

“If you decide to book a tour here, ask for anyone but Cynthia,” one review on Google said. Another said, “Couldn’t enjoy the tour due to how unprofessional the guide (Cynthia) is. Avoid her at all costs.”

A comment left on the guide’s Instagram account said, “you should not talk about people that come in to tours, Cynthia!!”

The reviews and comments each referenced what Mongeau shared on the podcast.

“Of course it wasn’t pleasant to listen to someone lie and say nasty things about me, but I’m a big girl,” Coutu said. “I can handle people trashing me, but a death threat is a bridge too far.”

To Coutu’s surprise, she started receiving comments and messages from Mongeau’s listeners who were “Team Cynthia.” Some of them were upset with Mongeau and helped Coutu report the false reviews left for the champagne house.

“People were sending me Reddit threads. I never even used Reddit before in my life,” Coutu said. “There’s at least, I think I counted 10 different threads devoted to this.”

“That reconciles me with humanity when I see that one of the consequences was this outpouring of kindness and a wake-up call for a lot of people,” Coutu went on to say. “It’s just wrong, cyberbullying — and death threats, well that’s next level.”

‘This Is Horrible’: YouTube Star Tana Mongeau Faces Backlash From Fans for ‘Doxxing’ French Wine Tour Guide

Tana Mongeau

On a recent episode of her podcast , “CANCELLED with Tana Mongeau,” the eponymous co-host of the podcast and YouTube star discussed her recent travels to Europe. One story she told, about a conflict with a wine tour guide in Paris, has Mongeau facing major backlash over accusations of “doxxing” the guide.

Mongeau explained that her and her friends booked a wine tour based on the recommendation of a friend who had been on the tour before and had a great time. However, the experience Mongeau and her friends were treated to didn’t align with their expectations.

Their tour guide met them at 8 a.m. at a train station to accompany them on a three-hour (many commenters have pointed out that based on the geography, it could not have been this long, and according to the tour guide’s website, the ride is only an hour and 15 minutes long) ride to their destination. From that point forward, Mongeau did not get along with the guide and went on to detail her awful experience. However, Mongeau’s use of the woman’s real name has been admonished by many, including her fans.

She further “doxxed” the woman by giving the name of the wine cellar they visited and encouraging listeners of her podcast to “ask for anyone but f—ing Cynthia” if they ever go there.

What follows is Mongeau’s account of what happened. Note that her co-host on the podcast, Brooke Schofield said, “I will say, you do embellish sometimes,” after hearing the story.

Tana Mongeau’s Story

Mongeau’s choice to use the woman’s real name, as opposed to Mongeau’s usual strategy of calling people by aliases, was an intentional decision, made clear by her statement at the start of the story: “I’m actually going to be calling her by her name: Cynthia. Cynthia. I wrote it down. Let me make sure that it’s f—ing Cynthia,” Mongeau said, proceeding to angrily repeat the name four more times.

Mongeau went on to call the woman a “c-nt” multiple times and say other disparaging things about her.

Certain things that frustrated Mongeau about Cynthia hardly seemed to be objectively angering. The YouTuber’s short temper may have been influenced by her hungover, sleep-deprived state (according to her story, she got 30 minutes to an hour of sleep the night before after partying all night in Paris).

Mongeau said the guide asked if the group wants a “fun” or “educational” tour, and they opted for fun — but didn’t feel that they got what they asked for. Mongeau says she put in her headphones on the train and planned to sleep during the ride.

“I feel a tap on my shoulder as I’m dozing off,” Mongeau said. “It’s Cynthia. I take my headphone out, and she proceeds to go on a 30-minute tangent to me about why Veuve Clicquot Champagne is called Veuve Clicquot Champagne.”

“Shut the f— up, Cynthia,” Schofield said in response to that detail.

The disconnect point here between Cynthia and Mongeau seems to be Mongeau’s desire to sleep before the tour begins. However, according to the online description of the tour, it had already begun at this point. The online description of the tour that the group seems to have embarked on says that the guide will “talk to you about the history of the wine, geography of the region, and how the industry is organised today” during the train ride.

Here’s where the story gets a little bit confusing. Mongeau claims her friend who purported to have booked this exact tour in the past told her that his experience was riding around on golf carts drinking wine.

So, Mongeau was horrified when Cynthia told the group that the tour would consist of walking six or seven miles — with no golf carts to be found.

Mongeau claims her friend who claimed to have previously booked the golf-carting tour asked why they would have to walk. According to Mongeau, Cynthia replied: “That’s not this one. I booked you on a different one. I thought you would like it more.”

However, the online description of the tour they likely booked mentions walking many times. Nowhere on the website are golf carts mentioned.

Mongeau says she was so distressed at the news that they would be walking six to seven miles that she put her sunglasses on to hide her tears. Mongeau said she then again tried to sleep with her headphone in but received another tap on the shoulder.

As the guide continued to discuss the day she had planned, she mentioned one of the cellars they would visit required climbing 550 stairs to reach the top. Mongeau said she asked if they could skip that one but was denied.

“I go, ‘I don’t care if Barack Obama was at the top of those stairs. I am not f—ing walking up those stairs today, Cynthia. I’ll die.”

Mongeau took offense to the guide saying she she could see about making an exception since Mongeau had “mobility issues.” In Cynthia’s defense, Mongeau claimed that she was “physically incapable” of walking up the stairs, which doesn’t seem far off from “mobility issues.”

Mongeau described Cynthia’s attitude toward her as condescending, saying that on the walk from the station, the guide continuously asked Mongeau if she was OK in a way Mongeau described as not genuine.

Mongeau was further frustrated on the walk over by the guide’s education on “everything that’s happening,” including fertilization.

After walking for about an hour and 15 minutes, Mongeau says the guide tapped her and asked her to take her headphones out during the tour, telling Mongeau that she was “being extremely disrespectful.”

Mongeau says she then became so outraged that she started laughing, which is apparently a thing that happens when she gets angry. Soon afterward, Mongeau says she asked her friend to call her a car service from Paris to pick her up, as she no longer wanted to participate in the tour.

When they arrived at the first stop on the tour and sat down and prepare to drink wine, Mongeau says she was “heartbroken” when Cynthia pulled up a chair to drink with them — although a wine tour guide drinking wine with attendees of her tour seems like an expected occurrence.

At this point, Mongeau says her friend heard back and informed her that the soonest car would take three hours to pick them up. Cynthia asked Mongeau multiple times if she was sure she wanted to cancel the tour, making sure she was aware that she had a lunch reservation already set up. This further frustrated the YouTuber, who said she had to tell the guide that she was sure many times.

As Cynthia poured them a taste of wine, Mongeau says she had tears in her eyes and was “so so unhappy” but trying her best.

Mongeau and her co-host then appeared to insinuate that the tour guide was autistic. “I think she had a touch of the… a touch of the —” Mongeau said before Schofield interrupted with: “Don’t say ’tism.”

“And maybe the social cues — could not recognize,” Mongeau said.

After teaching the group how to pour and drink wine like a pro, Cynthia handed a bottle to Mongeau’s friend, Paige, to try it out for herself, who instead made a joke about pouring the wine on her arm and taking it like a body shot.

Mongeau says Cynthia responded to this with “maybe only civilized people should have a drink.”

At this point in the story, Mongeau again calls the guide a “c-nt,” while Schofield describes her as a “whore.”

Next, Mongeau says she was so angry that she had to get up from the table while crying, and one of her friends came over to calm her down, telling her that this is clearly Cynthia’s life passion and that the guide had told him that she felt “so bad” that Mongeau wasn’t enjoying herself on the tour.

Somewhat appeased, Mongeau comes back to the table, where Cynthia is educating the group — on “something that no one gives absolute flying f— about” — according to Mongeau, who says she took her phone out to read a message and was met with an “I’ll wait” response from the tour guide, a moment Mongeau likens to being a child in a teacher’s class.

A little while later, Mongeau receives word that her car service was canceled.

“So now we are stranded at this vineyard, in this town with 300 people,” Mongeau said. “I put on my big glasses, and I’m just crying under them, and I’m just wiping, and I’m just trying not to let anyone know that I am sobbing. I am so sad.”

Mongeau says Cynthia, hearing that their ride was canceled, offered to let them use the vineyard’s car service — the first thing Cynthia’s done all day, Mongeau says, that she hasn’t “absolutely wanted to curb-stomp you for.”

After Cynthia confirmed the car service for them, Mongeau says her friends decided that they wanted to eat lunch first and leave afterward.

Mongeau says Cynthia then began “screaming” at her that she said she wanted to cancel, and Mongeau was shouting back that she did and still does.

Mongeau says she then picked up a bottle of wine, poured her glass as full as she could, chugged it and walked away.

Cynthia continued to educate her tour guests while Mongeau ignored her until the vineyard car service arrived. Mongeau’s group got in the car, and, Mongeau says, Cynthia unexpectedly joined them in the car for the ride back to Paris.

The ride back, per Mongeau’s account, was awkward, with Cynthia shaming the group for drinking a bottle of wine they had purchased at the vineyard in the car while it was warm. Mongeau also said Cynthia told one of Mongeau’s friends that she hates influencers like Mongeau and her friends

When they arrived back at their Airbnb, Mongeau said Cynthia asked where they were going after Paris, and when Mongeau replied that they were headed to Positano, Italy, she said, “Good luck with all the stairs there,” further angering Mongeau.

Cynthia then, Mongeau claims, followed them into their Airbnb to use their restroom, and then departed after bidding farewell to everybody except for Mongeau. An hour later, Mongeau says, Cynthia sent a Whatsapp message to one of her friends, again saying to wish Mongeau “good luck with the stairs in Positano.”

A few days later, when the group is in Italy, Mongeau says Cynthia sent one last message to her friend: “They may love her in America, but girls like her are nothing to us here.”

At the conclusion of the story, Mongeau expressed her regrets over not physically fighting the tour guide, a sentiment Schofield called “so valid,” adding Mongeau “should have beat her ass; I don’t care how old she is.”

Schofield concluded by saying she “kind of” wants Cynthia dead — “no offense.” Mongeau agreed, saying: “No, I literally, I absolutely want her dead — at the hands of me.”

Tana Mongeau Fans Harassment of the Wine Tour Guide

The YouTuber’s use of the tour guide’s name and cellar name led to her rabid fanbase figuring out the identity of the tour guide and harassing her online, pretending they had been on Cynthia’s tour and leaving negative reviews about her business. One recent Google Review left after Mongeau’s YouTube video went live described Cynthia as “arrogant” and “demeaning.”

“Cynthia is the worst tour guide and should not talk about guest that come in to tour,” read another recent review, while a third reviewer wrote: “Anybody planning on visiting here, please avoid having Cynthia as your guide at all costs. The way she speaks about people as well as to their faces is disgusting. Nobody with this type of attitude should have any job requiring you to interact with people. Something needs to be done about her employment here.”

All of those reviews and more gave the guide one star out of five.

Tana Mongeau Faces Backlash From Fans

On Reddit, there is a community devoted to the podcast, r/canceledpod. Oftentimes, when internet celebrities find themselves enveloped in controversy, their fans starkly defend them. However, a majority of commenters in the community appeared staunchly opposed to Mongeau’s actions.

Here are some of the comments written in defense of Cynthia and in opposition of Mongeau, expressing how badly they felt for a tour guide whom many perceived to have been merely trying to do her job. This sentiment — that Cynthia was only doing her job — is exacerbated by Mongeau’s own admission that the tour attendees outside of her group (whom she describes as “like 45” who had come prepared for a walking tour) were interested in Cynthia’s education.

  • “The Cynthia story was not it. I don’t know what Tana (and her friends) thought a wine-tasting tour was all about, but it’s not the employee’s fault that you got it all wrong and decided to party until 6 the night before…”
  • “The part where she’s like ‘we paid you!’ Is giving nightmare celebrity. I can only imagine what Cynthia went home and told her friends about this hellish group of assholes. Imagine being in France, experiencing their pride and joy tourist attraction, and crying out of disappointment the entire time. Gross.”
  • “sounded like tana was in a bad mood and took it out on someone who was just trying to do her job.”
  • “I did not like the Cynthia story at all 😭 tana acting like that at her big age is embarrassing.”
  • “This is horrible. i feel badly for cynthia. tana uses fake names for influencers (those who ALREADY have public profiles/lives) but uses a real name for someone who is private? i just don’t understand.”
  • “Tana is going in on this woman, but it looks like she was just doing the tour that she’s trained to do and that Tana’s group booked on to. In that context, cynthia’s reactions make a lot more sense and it’s really horrid that she’s getting all of these reviews left about her.”
  • I’m not sure why she is ridiculing Cynthia, who is so clearly just trying to do her JOB. Tana showed up on HER tour. Cynthia doesn’t know the backstory and is trying her best to literally perform what she is paid to do, educate, and take people on a tour. To any sober person who signs up voluntarily for a wine tour, walking and learning is most likely part of the gig. Tana cannot get upset because this is totally a fail on her end. Especially at the end when she’s pushing Cynthia to her breaking point. Of course Cynthias going to say something and I don’t blame her. How could you not see this platinum blonde LA influencer as entitled based on what happened?”

Some commenters, however, stuck up for Mongeau, voicing opinions along the line of “the customer is always right.”

“You shouldn’t be verbally harassed for wanting to leave,” one user wrote in defense of Mongeau. “I was a bratty teenager on plenty of tours and nobody ever treated me that way. I’m sure, Tana, to someone like, Cynthia, was being disrespectful from the get go with the headphones and stuff, but her wanting to leave because she didn’t realize what she was getting into shouldn’t be a crime. If she doesn’t wanna walk, you can’t verbally harass her into wanting to. She’s a paying customer, if she wants to put in headphones to make herself feel better than she can. It may be considered disrespectful from another persons perspective, but that’s no reason to invade someone’s space and say horrible things to them.”

According to a screenshot posted on Reddit, one commenter on Mongeau’s YouTube video wrote. “How dare a wine tasting lady discuss wine on a tour maybe it’s Cynthia’s fault u stayed up all night knowing u had to be there at 8am how dare them.”

Mongeau responded to this comment: “no i think it’s more so the rude comments, signing us up for a different tour without consent when we paid for a specific tour, her texts after, and also asking us the type of tour we’d like to go on and negating our PAID choice completely whilst being upset that we didn’t want to do when she wanted to do, and getting in a car we paid for just to blatantly disrespect us/enter our airbnb etc. it was tens of thousands of dollars. unprofessionalism at its finest.”

“Tens of thousands of dollars” is another detail that appears to be embellished. According to the website, the full price for the tour is €400 ($436).

YouTube personality Adam McIntyre uploaded a YouTube video about the story last week titled “tana mongeau doxxed a woman,” which has amassed more than 80,000 views.
