The 2022 WTA Tour (branded as the 2022 Hologic WTA Tour for sponsorship reasons) was the global elite women's professional tennis circuit organized by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for the 2022 tennis season. It began on 3 January 2022 in Adelaide, Australia and ended on 13 November 2022 in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

Season Summary [ edit ]

The 2022 WTA Tour calendar comprised the Grand Slam tournaments (supervised by the International Tennis Federation (ITF)), the WTA 1000 tournaments, the WTA 500 tournaments, the WTA 250 tournaments, the Billie Jean King Cup (organized by the ITF), and the year-end championships (the WTA Finals). The season opens with the Adelaide International event on 3 January thats won by Ashleigh Barty.

In Major competitions in January the Australian Open is won by Ashleigh Barty beats Danielle Collins for the title. In May the French Open is won by Iga Świątek who defeated Coco Gauff. In July Elena Rybakina takes the title in a three set final against Ons Jabeur. In early September at the final Grand Slam tournament if the the U.S. Open in New York, Iga Świątek wins the title against Ons Jabeur to take her second major of the season.

The year end championships the WTA Finals are held in Fort Worth, United States and are won by Caroline Garcia against Aryna Sabalenka. The season ends with the team competition the Billie Jean King Cup Finals held in Glasgow, United Kingdom that's won by Switzerland who defeat Australia two zero in rubbers. Poland's Iga Świątek is title leader for 2022 winning 8 singles titles from 9 finals as well as winning 2 Major's and finishing the year end World No One.

WTA Tour news: Women’s Tour unveils full 125 schedule

The WTA has released the calendar for the 125 level tournaments, spanning March to December of this year.

In 2022 we will see 21 WTA 125 tournaments up from 15 in 2021.

The Andalucia Open which gets underway in Marbella, Spain later this month kicks off the 125 season.

“Established in 2012, WTA 125 tournaments play an important role in providing a bridge for new stars of the sport the ability to continue their progression into the WTA, while at the same time providing opportunities for established players, all in strategic weeks throughout the calendar.

“The 2022 season will feature 21 WTA 125 tournaments, covering 14 countries across three continents and offering competition on all three different playing surfaces.

“This marks an increase from 15 events in 2021, further maximizing playing opportunities for athletes alongside the WTA Tour.

“The WTA 125 calendar kicks off during the week of March 28 at the AnyTech 365 Andalucia Open in Marbella, Spain, before further tournaments in Europe, the USA, Canada, Uruguay, Argentina and Mexico and ending in France at the Open BLS de Limoges in mid-December.”

The WTA are eager to ensure that the transition from the ITF tournaments up to the main tour is eased with the 125 events.

“WTA 125 tournaments are an important part of the overall WTA Tour structure in strengthening women’s professional tennis,” said Steve Simon, WTA Chairman and CEO.

“One of our priorities is to support and enhance the elite player pathway, and this year’s WTA 125 schedule reflects the progress being made.”

• 2023 WTA 125 Tour

The 2023 WTA 125 Tour is a secondary professional tennis tour for women, organised by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA).

On 1 March 2022, the ATP, WTA, ITF and the four grand slam tournaments announced as a result of the Russian war in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia would not be allowed to play in tournaments under the names or flags of their countries. The tennis players are able to compete in tournaments but not under the Russian or Belarusian flags.

Li claims first WTA 125 title of career in Valencia

Ann Li of the United States won the first WTA 125 title of her career on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over No.1 seed Viktoriya Tomova in the BBVA Open Internacional de Valencia final.

Unseeded Li needed 1 hour and 18 minutes to take down Bulgaria's Tomova at the clay-court event. Li clinched the highest-level title of her career since 2021, when she won the WTA 250 event in Tenerife for her maiden Hologic WTA Tour title.

Li racked up the upsets in Valencia, Spain, defeating the top three seeds during the week. Before prevailing over top-seeded Tomova, Li garnered three-set wins over No.3 seed Martina Trevisan in the second round and No.2 seed Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the semifinals.

In the straight-sets final, it was Li who took greater advantage of break points, going 4-for-6. World No.69 Tomova converted only two of her nine break points in the final.

Li hit a career-high ranking of No.44 in January of 2022, but injuries, including to her abdominal in 2021 and pectoral in 2022, have periodically stunted the former Junior Wimbledon finalist's momentum.

By triumphing in Valencia, the 23-year-old will see her ranking take a leap upwards. Li rises from No.172 to No.140 in Monday's updated PIF WTA Rankings.

In Sunday's doubles final, No.2 seeds Katarzyna Piter of Poland and Fanny Stollar of Hungary defeated unseeded Angelica Moratelli of Italy and Renata Zarazua of Mexico 6-1, 4-6, [10-8] to hoist the championship trophy.

Piter and Stollar saw a 5-0 lead in the decisive match-tiebreak slip away, but held on to clinch victory after 1 hour and 22 minutes of play. Piter and Stollar also needed a match-tiebreak to squeak past Seone Mendez and Ekaterina Yashina in the semifinals.

This is Stollar's second career WTA 125 doubles title and her first since 2019. For Piter, this is her first WTA 125 doubles title after going winless in her first five WTA 125 finals. Both Stollar and Piter have also won multiple doubles titles at Hologic WTA Tour events.
