The Audi Summer Tour 2023 will see FC Bayern Munich travel to Asia from July 24 to August 3 ahead of the start of the new season. There, the reigning German champions will meet treble winners Manchester City with former FCB coach Pep Guardiola, among other rivals. New signings Raphaël Guerreiro and Konrad Laimer are among the travelling party. The brand with the four rings is also bringing a new member along: the Audi Q8 e-tron , which is currently being launched in Japan. Other Asian markets will follow. Audi is reflecting the Summer Tour’s color scheme with special decals as a unique homage to FC Bayern.

From Tegernsee to Tokyo: After a training camp in Upper Bavaria, FC Bayern Munich is traveling to Asia together with its long-time partner Audi under the motto “A way to inspire”. The first stop on the Audi Summer Tour is Tokyo: At the Audi Football Summit in Japan’s capital, head coach Thomas Tuchel’s team will go up against English champions and Champions League winners Manchester City on July 26 (12:30 p.m., CEST). On July 29, the team faces Japanese top-league club Kawasaki Frontale (12 p.m., CEST). The next day, Germany’s record champion club will fly on to Singapore: At the Singapore Trophy presented by Audi, FC Bayern will face Liverpool FC, managed by coach Jürgen Klopp on August 2 (1:30 p.m., CEST). RTL will broadcast the high-profile friendly matches against Manchester City and Liverpool FC live on free television in Germany at noon. The games, including the match against Kawasaki Frontale, can also be viewed on pay-TV channel Sky. This is the eighth time that the brand with the four rings has given its name to, and partnered with, FC Bayern Munich’s Audi Summer Tour.

“Our partnership with FC Bayern Munich shows: We live progress! We’re also demonstrating this with the Audi Summer Tour in Japan and Singapore, with sporting events and fascinating experiences in strong solidarity with our partner FC Bayern Munich. Asia is of great importance to Audi as our most important growth market. I’m delighted that we are now expanding our product portfolio with the launch of the Audi Q8 e-tron and further strengthening our e-offensive in Asia in the long term,” says Hildegard Wortmann, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing at AUDI AG.

The Audi Q8 e-tron with the design of the new FC Bayern away jersey

The Audi Q8 e-tron , which will join the FC Bayern Munich team on its trip to Asia, is getting special decals. With the colors black, green, and purple, they reflect the color scheme of the Audi Summer Tour.

Andreas Jung, Executive Board Member responsible for marketing at FC Bayern said: “This year, the Audi Summer Tour offers our fans in Asia the opportunity to experience FC Bayern players live for the first time in five years. We are looking forward to our time in Tokyo and Singapore, where our fan base across the region continues to grow. We want to create even more enthusiasm for soccer there and, together with our partners, inspire people beyond the pitch itself.”

FC Bayern Munich is making its first guest appearance in Japan since 2008; on its last visit to Asia in 2017, the team stopped at China and Singapore.

Top model features over 40 driver assistance systems

As the successor to the electric pioneer, the Audi e-tron , the Audi Q8 e-tron stands out with an optimized drive concept, improved aerodynamics, and higher charging performance and battery capacity. All these innovations make for an increased range up to 600 kilometers (under the WLTP standard) for the Sportback model. The new model from Ingolstadt also offers maximum space and comfort. The features of the Q8 e-tron also meet the demands of discerning Japanese customers, who see the brand with the four rings as a progressive player in the BEV segment.

Among other achievements, the electric SUV and crossover top model sets new standards with its luxury-class interior, which is even brighter thanks to the power panoramic glass roof. Like in all luxury-class models from Audi, the Q8 e-tron also uses the MMI touch response operating system. Practically all the car’s features can be activated via two high-resolution touch displays. In addition, the Audi Q8 e-tron provides drivers with approximately 40 driver assistance systems.

The brand with the four rings and FC Bayern Munich have been partners since 2002; their partnership was recently extended until 2029. Audi has also been a shareholder in FC Bayern München AG since 2011.

Bayern Munich announce summer 2024 tour of South Korea

Bayern Munich are heading back to Asia, when they will visit South Korea as part of their Audi Summer Tour.

Bayern will take part in the “Coupang Play Series 2024”, with matches taking place at the World Cup Stadium. Their opponents and the dates of their fixtures will be announced at a later date.

It is the second time in as many years that the record champions have touched down on the Asian continent, following last summer's trip to Japan and Singapore . They also stopped off in China and Singapore in 2017, but this will be the club's first visit to South Korea.

As well as stepping up preparations for the 2024/25 season in friendly action, Bayern's players will be involved in various fan-centred activities. South Korea international Minjae Kim can expect a particularly warm reception, though the Bayern squad is brimming with international stars, including Alphonso Davies , Harry Kane , Jamal Musiala and Manuel Neuer .

In June 2022, Bayern opened an office in Bangkok, Thailand, designed to better reach fans in Southeast Asia, India and Oceania. It is the club's third base outside of Germany, with New York (USA) and Shanghai (China) offices in operation since 2014 and 2017 respectively.

FC Bayern München v VfL Wolfsburg - Bundesliga

Bayern Munich head coach Thomas Tuchel skipped the farewell tour in his final home game in charge — Sunday’s 2-0 victory over VfL Wolfsburg. The 50-year-old is departing, probably, and leaving behind a mixed legacy.

But that is not the reason for skipping the goodbyes, for now.

“It’s a moment for the team. The fans don’t come to the stadium for the coach — it’s for the team. I’m not someone who wants to take center stage,” Tuchel explained for the media after the game (as captured by @iMiaSanMia ).

Tuchel also took a moment to reflect on what has been a complicated one-plus year in charge at Bayern.

“I love football — it’s a very big part of my life. It’s a privilege that I’m a coach at this level,” he continued . “I came here to win as many titles as possible with this team and this club — we didn’t manage to do that. We were two points behind Leverkusen up until February. We got so many points without really playing well and with so many injuries. Those couple of weeks, with the defeats in Leverkusen, Rome and Bochum cost us a lot. Then in the Champions League we played two very good games against Arsenal and Real Madrid . As a coach, you gain experience with each passing day, that’s the job. Life goes on and there will be new experiences.”

That does not sound like a man who is open to staying after all, but with the Bayern coaching search in such a state of flux — who knows?

As for the game, there was not much to say. Under highly demotivating circumstances, at least the Bavarians produced a victory, and helped the young guns gain some experience.

“The first 20-25 minutes were great. We were quick with our passing, very flexible, we put pressure on the opponent in their half and found good solutions. In the second half, it was more difficult for us to create chances and find solutions, but we were focused until the end. We had young boys who made their debuts today. Overall it was a deserved win,” Tuchel concluded .

Bayern Munich’s rare busy January transfer window – and more to follow in the summer

Bayern Munich’s rare busy January transfer window – and more to follow in the summer

Usually, Bayern Munich’s squad planners behave like Alpine marmots, hibernating until March. But an embarrassing failure to address key shortcomings last summer had sporting director Christoph Freund and his team putting the work of two transfer windows into one this January.

The drawn-out deal for Harry Kane had occupied minds so much that more mundane but no less vital reinforcements in defensive positions were left too late.

Ball-winning midfielder Palhinha flew back to London after Fulham torpedoed his transfer on the final day of the window at the start of September.

Desperate, unfocused attempts to bring in a defender capable of playing in the middle as well as on the right came to nothing, too.

Their main target when the window reopened at New Year was precisely that kind of player — the multi-talented Ronald Araujo of Barcelona . Bayern believed he was willing to move to Munich and their supervisory board had already green-lit an €80million (£68.3m; $87m) outlay, but Barca and coach Xavi were not interested in entertaining any negotiations.

Bayern moved on to a rather cheaper and more short-term alternative: Eric Dier came in on a six-month loan from Tottenham Hotspur , with an option for another full season after that.

The arrival of Dier underlines the growing influence of Kane, who put a good word in for his friend and long-time club and country team-mate in talks with manager Thomas Tuchel. But the now 30-year-old England international’s profile was also considered right for Bayern’s needs.

bayern munich summer tour

Kim Min-jae’s ongoing Asian Cup challenge with South Korea , Dayot Upamecano ’s injury problems and concerns over Matthijs de Ligt’s form and fitness made it imperative to bring in an experienced “plug and play” centre-back who could do a job straight away.

Dier, who has started one Premier League game this season, won’t solve all the club’s problems and defensive issues. But he is definitely a better option than Leon Goretzka , a midfielder who has had to help out as a centre-back a couple of times.

An abortive move for another England international, Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier , followed a similar rationale. Bayern’s scouts rated the 33-year-old for his leadership and attacking play, but the board would only sanction a fee of €16million in light of the player’s age and defensive limitations.

As the pursuit of Trippier stalled, attention quickly switched to a younger, more expensive player; someone who could challenge Morocco international Noussair Mazraoui for his place in the team.

Sacha Boey had given a good enough account of himself in the Champions League for Galatasaray this season against Bayern, Manchester United and Copenhagen to warrant a €30million-plus transfer fee. The serial German champions hope the 23-year-old will continue the legacy of successful French full-backs Bixente Lizarazu, Willy Sagnol and Benjamin Pavard at the club.

If Dier (stop-gap) and Boey (long-term prospect) occupy opposite poles in terms of timeframe and expenditure, the move for Bryan Zaragoza straddles them both.

Bayern had already secured the Granada forward for next season at €15million, when the plan was for him to be used as competition and/or a possible replacement for wingers Serge Gnabry , Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sane .

Coman’s serious knee injury last weekend left Bayern short on the flanks, however, and had them looking at loan options. Chelsea ’s out-of-sorts January 2023 buy Mykhailo Mudryk was one of those they briefly considered, but expediting Zaragoza’s arrival for an extra couple of million euros proved the most straightforward solution.

bayern munich summer tour

Aged 22 and still a little raw (he was playing in the Spanish fourth tier in 2021-22 and the second division last season), Zaragoza is perhaps the first “typical” Freund buy. Bayern’s new Austrian sporting director, in charge since September 1, made his name at Red Bull Salzburg in his homeland, overseeing the development of Erling Haaland , Dominik Szoboszlai , Karim Adeyemi, Upamecano and many others.

As the failed attempt to sign Araujo shows, Freund won’t be afraid to browse the top shelf but Bayern recognise that they need to go back to how they worked in Michael Reschke’s time as technical director. Between 2014 and 2017, they had a habit of finding gems, such as Joshua Kimmich , Gnabry and Coman, for relatively little money. This is what they need to do again if they are going to stay competitive at the elite level.

In addition, Bayern have also signed 16-year-old Swedish centre-forward Jonah Kusi-Asare from AIK in Stockholm. Kusi-Asare won’t challenge England captain Kane anytime soon, but he is seen as a great talent. It will be interesting to see whether Bayern will play him in their under-19s or loan him out, confident he is ready for first-team action at a lower level.

Subject to additional injuries, the Bayern squad now looks well-equipped to reel in Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen and make a dent in the Champions League’s knockout phase, even if Tuchel will have to wait a little longer for his defensive specialist in midfield.

But just like those Alpine marmots, Freund and his colleagues will get truly busy once spring has sprung.

With the help of incoming board member Max Eberl, until recently the managing director for sport at Leipzig and before that sporting director at Borussia Monchengladbach, they need to decide if Tuchel’s longing for a holding midfielder should be fulfilled. If the answer to that question is yes, at what cost to the existing duopoly of Kimmich and Goretzka in the centre?

Sane and Alphonso Davies also face uncertain futures as their contracts are due to expire after next season.

There’s too much football still to be played to predict the answers to any of these fraught questions with any degree of confidence but one thing is for sure: this summer will be pretty hot in Munich.
