Singapore v Liverpool FC

After five years, Liverpool are heading back to Asia for a pre-season tour, with two dates now confirmed for the club’s 2022-23 pre-season including a match against Manchester United in Bangkok on Tuesday, July 12th, and a match against Crystal Palace in Singapore on the 15th.

At least another date or two in the region is likely to be announced, and if the club’s pre-season plans follow the pattern of other years there will likely be a few dates in Europe both before and after their tour.

There also seems the possibility that there could be more than one game played in Singapore given the game against Palace is being billed as part of a Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy 2022. Alternately it could simply be a one-off match with a sponsor attached to it.

“Pre-season is a vital time of year for our players,” read a statement from commercial director Ben Latty. “It’s hugely important preparation for the season ahead and it’s also a perfect opportunity to meet with our fans around the world.

“We can’t wait to get back to Singapore once again, we’ve received a tremendous welcome there in the past, and are excited to be taking part in the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy 2022.”

A return to Singapore for the Reds will indeed be exciting news for the many fans of the club there. Whether there’s any particular excitement in it also being a chance for the Reds to lift the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy 2022 we’ll leave up to readers.

Liverpool's preparations for the upcoming season will get underway with fixtures against Manchester United and Crystal Palace in Southeast Asia in July, as they return to Rajamangala Stadium for the first time since 2015.

The Reds announced at the end of March that they will be embarking on their first pre-season tour since the Coronavirus pandemic with a two fixtures against fellow Premier League opposition in the Bangkok Century Cup.

Jurgen Klopp's squad will regroup at the AXA Training Centre in Kirkby on Monday July 4, where members of their domestic cup double will be joined by the additions of £85m man Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho, where they will undertake a week of domestic-based training before jetting off for the first part pre-season tour.

Liverpool will face the Red Devils on Tuesday July 12, before taking on Patrick Vieira's men just three days later.

After their venture to Southeast Asia, the Reds will head to Austria for a training camp and although Liverpool have yet to confirm any friendlies during their training camp, they are hopeful of playing RB Leipzig in Germany and Red Bull Salzburg in Austria.

Since 2020, when pre-season tours were halted because of the pandemic, Klopp's men have headed to Austria on both occasions since, opting for a month-long camp in 2020 before a shorter stay in the state of Tirol last year.

Given that Liverpool's first competitive game of the season takes play on Saturday July 30 against Manchester City in the Community Shield, it is most likely that the Reds will venture to Austria during the week of 18 July, though an official date is yet to be confirmed by the club.

Due to the Qatar World Cup taking place during the winter, the Premier League season start date has been brought forward as the league's first round of fixtures are schedule in for the 6/7 August, one week earlier than usually.

Liverpool has confirmed another pre-season friendly fixture in the USA this summer, with the Reds set to take on the Spanish outfit Real Betis in Pittsburgh. Under a new manager who will take over from Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool is set to head to the US for the first time in five years.

The US trip, which already included matches against Manchester United and Arsenal, was confirmed in February. The last time that Liverpool headed Stateside was the summer of 2019, just after the Reds had become European champions for the sixth time. Since then, a combination of Covid and then commercial opportunities in Asia have meant that they have not gone back until now.

In 2019, Liverpool played against Borussia Dortmund , Sevilla and Sporting CP in New York, Boston and Indiana. The Reds played on the west coast of the US during Klopp's first summer in charge back in 2016 with friendly fixtures against Chelsea , AC Milan and AS Roma.

This time, Liverpool was already confirmed to be playing Arsenal on Wednesday, July 31 in Philadelphia and then Manchester United in South Carolina on Saturday, August 3, meaning the Reds are staying on the east coast of the US. Now, the extra game has been penciled in for Friday, July 26.

The match against Real Betis will be staged at the Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh. The new manager will also be able to use the time in the US to continue preparations for the new season on the training field.

"Adding Pittsburgh to our pre-season tour schedule is a great way to start our eagerly anticipated return to the USA," Ben Latty, the club's commercial director, said, via the official website . "We were delighted to quickly sell out our fixtures against Arsenal and Manchester United on this tour and are equally excited to be able to offer our supporters in the States another opportunity to see Liverpool FC play. Real Betis will come with a strong squad and it's going to be a great occasion in another iconic setting, in another fantastic US city."

"We are proud to announce our highly anticipated return to the USA providing a great environment for the squad to prepare for the season ahead," Latty said via the club's official website in February. "Pre-season tours always present exceptional opportunities for our supporters, the team and our official partners to engage in memorable experiences within a key focus market for the club."

The 2024/25 season in the Premier League will kick off on the weekend of August 17 and 18. The fixture list is usually published a few weeks after the prior campaign has come to a close. Liverpool will hope to begin life under a new head coach as league champion, with the Reds currently level on points with Arsenal at the top of the table with seven matches left to play.

Liverpool.com says: A return to the US will be big news for fans in America after so long without the chance to see the Reds on home soil. It will be a very different summer for Liverpool, of course, without Klopp in charge. There is also the impact of the European Championship in Germany to consider.

That tournament takes place from mid-June to mid-July so there is a good chance that a number of players involved in that will not be traveling to the US. They might need an extended break in what looks set to be another packed close season in which the majority of stars get very little in the way of a proper rest.

How can I watch these soccer friendlies if I can’t attend in person?

If tickets are not your aim, many of these friendlies are still available via streaming or even on TV. For example, in the past, MLS All-Star Games aired on ESPN or FOX. Now that Apple has the MLS streaming rights, the MLS All-Star Game is available via MLS Season Pass. Other games are available via TV.

The full streaming schedule for the list of summer friendlies will be available on the full schedule of soccer games as those dates near.

How do these friendlies differ from other soccer matches in terms of rules and gameplay?

The main thing is that there is nothing of note on the line. For some, there are bragging rights. American-centric soccer fans would like to see the best of MLS compete against one of England’s top sides. Likewise, if there is ever a derby, there can be some international bragging rights, like Barcelona over Real Madrid based on USA friendlies.

Therefore, the gameplay is tamer than what some fans may be used to. Players are not diving into challenges or putting their bodies on the line as much as they would in a league or cup game during the proper season.

In terms of rules, there are some changes as well. One of the main ones is the lack of a limit on substitutions. Teams, particularly those out of Europe, want to interchange players to allow everyone to get some preseason action in. Also, games may not always end in draws. The MLS All-Star Game, for instance, will go to penalties if the game is tied. Other friendlies would settle with a draw, it truly depends on the competition.

Other ways to watch

Can’t make it to live preseason games in the USA this year, or out of your budget? You can still watch many of the soccer friendlies on TV or online. For instance, the schedule of upcoming games are always updated on our website. Many of the games may be available across streaming, too, including Fubo .

Why do teams play friendlies?

Friendlies serve two purposes for teams. First, they’re an ideal way to gain match fitness before a new season begins. For instance, European soccer seasons usually begin in August. Therefore, the games give coaches and managers an opportunity to play new star signings, as well as trying different formations. Second, the games generate more revenue for the teams and increase the size of the teams’ fan bases.

Historically, major soccer teams have been visiting the United States to play games for decades. For instance, Everton first played friendlies in the United States in 1956. Similarly, the first record of English teams playing in the United States was from 1905.

Nowadays, the summer soccer friendlies are an annual tradition in the United States.

Who plays in soccer friendlies?

Soccer friendlies provide a great opportunity for US fans to see their favorite international stars, sometimes in their own cities. Soccer friendlies also provide the chance for newer players to gain more experience.

For this reason, it’s up to each team’s manager (or coach) to decide who plays in the games. Some coaches prefer to give their youth stars an opportunity to get valuable playing time. Other managers like to build the team’s chemistry by playing the stars who will start the upcoming European season.

Do friendlies count?

Friendlies, also known as exhibition games, do not count for points. In spite of this, promoters sometimes entice clubs with a cup if they win their series of friendlies. For example, Relevent Sports launched the International Champions Cup as a way to make the friendlies more meaningful. Having said that, clubs rarely put much emphasis on winning these friendly competitions. At the end of the day, football teams play friendlies because the games grow fanbases and get teams ready for the new season. Preseason ranked games do not count for points.

You may wonder, what is a friendly in soccer? When soccer clubs first originated in the 1800s, there were no leagues or competitions. So, teams would play against each other in a friendly game. It wasn’t until 1888 when the Football League was created that teams faced each other in competitive games.

Reassessing last summer's transfers, Chelsea to Man United

liverpool fc summer tour 2022

The transfer window has only now officially opened, but the biggest move of the summer happened a month or so ago: Paris Saint-Germain is no longer Kylian Mbappé 's employer. The French giant held onto Mbappe's services for a couple of years longer than anyone thought, but his long-expected move to Real Madrid was made official just after the Champions League final.

PSG now have quite a bit of money burning a hole in their figurative pocket, and that's usually a pretty dangerous thing. But the club's rebuild actually began a year ago. Lionel Messi (Inter Miami) and Sergio Ramos (Sevilla) left on free transfers, Mauro Icardi left for a €10 million fee to become a Champions League hero at Galatasaray, and other veterans like Neymar (Al Hilal), Marco Verratti (Al Arabi), Abou Diallo (Al Arabi), Julian Draxler (Al-Ahli) and Georginio Wijnaldum (Al Ettifaq) left for clubs in the Middle East for a combined €167m in transfer fees.

It's rare that a club so well-monied makes more than €200m in transfer fees in a single offseason, but fear not: PSG spent more than double that in return. They remodeled their attack by spending nearly a combined €300m to acquire Randal Kolo Muani , Gonçalo Ramos , Ousmane Dembélé , Bradley Barcola , Hugo Ekitike and Kang-In Lee . They tried to sturdy both their present and future defense by spending nearly €150m for defenders Lucas Hernández and Lucas Beraldo and defensive midfielders Manuel Ugarte and Gabriel Moscardo .

In all, PSG's balance in the 2023-24 transfer windows -- the transfer fees gained minutes the transfer fees spent -- was, per Transfermarkt, minus-€247m, the largest in Europe. Chelsea (-€202.3m) was the only other club past -€200m, while eight other Premier League teams and Real Madrid passed -€100m.

And for all that effort, PSG went from averaging 2.24 points per game in Ligue 1 play in 2022-23 (85 points in 38 matches) to averaging ... 2.24 in 2023-24 (76 in 34). They did advance two rounds further in the Champions League, but a knockout competition isn't as reliable a barometer of success as league play is. By that metric, PSG did a lot of work and had lot of turnover just to stay exactly the same.

For other teams in Europe, though, their offseason moves actually did something. For better or worse, they saw their fortunes actually rise or fall in 2023-24, following execution of their transfer strategies of choice. With teams preparing to whip out the checkbook as the window opens once more, let's take a final look back at which teams spent big or thriftily (in terms of transfer fee balance), and which were either rewarded or punished for their efforts.

Oh, and it should go without saying that the transfer fee is only one of two numbers that matter -- the other being the salaries teams are paying -- and some moves are made with the future in mind, not the present. But we tend to focus a lot of our energy on immediate returns, so now that the transfer window fully opened across Europe on Monday, let's see who got their returns and who very much did not.

Would you like to learn 'The Liverpool Way' with expert tuition from club coaches?

This summer you will have the chance, with LFC delighted to announce the return of its residential camps.

Players aged 10 to 17 can now take part in residential courses in the UK, learning to play 'The Liverpool Way' through football coaching sessions delivered by a team of experienced Reds coaches.

Courses will be delivered through a combination of player masterclasses and practical coaching sessions that follow the LFC curriculum, so participants experience a taste of life as a young player.

The programmes include a football focus and English language learning option for international players, while participants will also enjoy a tour of Anfield as part of the package.

Sessions will focus on the same principles and development priorities as the club's Academy, giving participants an insight into the training programme that has successfully prepared many players for the Reds' senior team.

This flagship LFC coaching experience is available as a one-week or two-week residential course, or a day camp, and will begin in July 2022.
