How to Use Your Avion Points for Travel Rewards

Use the fixed fare chart for airline tickets.

One way to use your Avion points for travel is with the purchase of an airline ticket. This is the best way to get the most value out of the RBC Avion Rewards program . This is described in detail in this article .

Depending on the destination, 15,000 to 100,000 Avion points are required per ticket.

RBC Avion Rewards points can be used to travel anywhere in the world with a round-trip ticket. A one-way trip requires half as many Avion points. Here is the airfare table for a round-trip flight:

On average this equals about 2 cents per Avion point .

Use the Flexible Fare Chart for Airfare

The Flexible Fare Plan uses 100 Avion points for a $1 discount on your airfare. The transaction must be made directly on the Avion Rewards website, using the flight search tool.

For example, with the flat rate fare, 35,000 points will get you a round-trip ticket anywhere in Canada and the U.S., up to a value of $750.

If you choose to purchase that same $750 ticket with the flexible fare structure , you will need 75,000 points. So using the flexible fee schedule would be more of a disadvantage in this case. It’s up to you to make your calculations, depending on the number of points you have banked.

Redeem Avion Points for Any Trip

For even more flexibility, book your hotel, car rental, cruise or airline tickets as you wish on the Avion Rewards site to have your account credited.

Avion credit cardholders can redeem 100 Avion points to deduct $1 from this travel expense. For example, for a night at the hotel that cost $200, 20,000 points are required to bring the balance down to zero.

For ION and ION+ credit card holders, it’s different. They redeem their points using a conversion rate of 172 points = $1.

Buy Gift Cards

There are approximately 250 gift cards to purchase with Avion points. About ten of these geared towards travel. For example, buying a gift card for future stays at Fairmont or Best Western hotels. Or Tim Hortons, for roadtrips !

Generally, the cost is 1 cent per Avion point, so 5,000 points for a $50 gift card .

Uber is different, with 7,000 points for $50.

Transfer to Other Airline Loyalty Programs

Did you know that it is possible to transfer your Avion points to other airline loyalty programs? We explain how in our tutorial on this subject:

Another way of exchanging RBC points in the event of technical problems

Occasionally, the Avion Rewards site may experience technical difficulties or your flight may not appear in the search results.

During that time, call Avion Rewards Customer Service at 1-800-769-2512.

  • Get an authorization number to book the flight you want;
  • Book your own flight directly on the desired airline’s website;
  • Send an e-mail to [email protected] with your authorization number obtained earlier from Customer Service, your name, the number of tickets reserved, proof of ticket purchase and itinerary details.

Avion Rewards will then deduct the required points from your RBC Rewards points account to credit the cost of your airline tickets, according to their fare structure.

  • RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege Card
  • RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card
  • RBC Avion Visa Platinum Card
  • RBC Avion Visa Infinite Business Card
  • RBC Avion Visa Business Card

Each of these cards earn Avion Elite points, which can be transferred to all of RBC’s airline partners and redeemed for high value towards airfare via the RBC Air Travel Redemption Schedule. They also offer airport lounge access, travel and shopping coverage, and other benefits and perks.

They cannot be transferred to RBC’s full list of partners and they cannot be redeemed for airfare via the Air Travel Redemption Schedule. However, you can transfer your Avion Premium points to a card that earns Avion Elite points and redeem them for higher value.

How to redeem Avion points

Avion points can be redeemed for a variety of rewards, such as travel, merchandise, gift cards, and more. You can also use your points to pay for your credit card balance, bills, investments, or charitable donations. The value of your points will vary depending on how you redeem them, so you will want to choose the option that gives you the most bang for your buck.

Redeeming Avion points for travel

Travel is the most popular and valuable redemption option for Avion points. You can use your points to book flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises, and vacation packages with any airline, any time. There are two ways to redeem your points for travel: using the Air Travel Redemption Schedule or the conversion rate.

Air Travel Redemption Schedule

The Air Travel Redemption Schedule is a chart that shows how many Avion Elite points you need to redeem for a one-way or round-trip flight between different destinations around the world. The chart is divided into six zones, each with a fixed points rate and a maximum ticket price. The zones are:

  • Zone 1: Quick Getaways – Within or to an adjacent province/territory or U.S. state
  • Zone 2: Explore North America – Anywhere in Canada/U.S. except Hawaii and Alaska
  • Zone 3: Holiday Destinations – Western Canada/U.S. to Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska; Eastern Canada to Bermuda, Central America, Caribbean
  • Zone 4: Take a Vacation – Eastern Canada/U.S. to Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska; Western Canada to Bermuda, Central America, Caribbean
  • Zone 5: Visit Europe – Major gateway in Canada/U.S. to destinations in Europe
  • Zone 6: See the World – Major gateway in Canada/U.S. to destinations in Asia, Australia, New Zealand, South Pacific, Middle East, Africa, South America

The Air Travel Redemption Schedule offers up to 2.33 cents per point in value, but that’s only if your flight matches the max ticket price or is over the max ticket price for the zone. For example, if you redeem 15,000 points for a round-trip flight within Zone 1 that costs $350, you are getting 2.33 cents per point ($350 / 15,000 = 0.0233). However, if your flight costs less than the max ticket price, you are getting less value per point. For example, if you redeem 15,000 points for a round-trip flight within Zone 1 that costs $250, you are getting 1.67 cents per point ($250 / 15,000 = 0.0167).

If your flight costs more than the max ticket price, you can either pay the difference with your credit card or use the conversion rate to cover the extra cost with more points. For example, if you redeem 15,000 points for a round-trip flight within Zone 1 that costs $400, you can either pay $50 with your credit card or use 5,000 more points (at a rate of 100 points = $1) to cover the difference.

To redeem your Avion Elite points for travel using the Air Travel Redemption Schedule, you need to follow these steps:

  • Visit avionrewards.com/travel or call 1-877-636-2870 to book your flight. You can choose any airline, any flight, any time. There are no blackout dates or advance booking restrictions, even during peak periods.
  • Select the zone that matches your destination and check the availability and price of your flight. Make sure it matches the zone and does not exceed the max ticket price. If it does, you can either pay the difference or use more points.
  • Confirm your booking and pay any taxes, fees, or surcharges with your credit card or points. You will receive an e-ticket confirmation by email.

Conversion rate

The conversion rate is another way to redeem your Avion Elite points for travel. It allows you to book any flight at any time, without any restrictions or limitations. The conversion rate is 100 points = $1, which means you can use your points to pay for the full or partial cost of your flight, including taxes, fees, and surcharges.

The conversion rate offers a flat value of 1 cent per point, which is lower than the Air Travel Redemption Schedule. However, it gives you more flexibility and choice, especially if you want to book a flight that is not covered by the schedule, such as a last-minute deal, a low-cost carrier, or a complex itinerary.

To redeem your Avion Elite points for travel using the conversion rate, you need to follow these steps:

  • Select the conversion rate option and enter the number of points you want to use. You can use as many or as few points as you want, as long as you have enough to cover the minimum redemption amount of $50 (5,000 points).
  • Confirm your booking and pay any remaining balance with your credit card or points. You will receive an e-ticket confirmation by email.

Redeeming Avion points for other rewards

Besides travel, you can also redeem your Avion points for other rewards, such as merchandise, gift cards, and more. You can browse and shop for thousands of items from various categories, such as electronics, home and garden, fashion, health and beauty, and more. You can also choose from hundreds of gift cards from popular retailers, restaurants, and services.

To redeem your Avion points for other rewards, you need to follow these steps:

  • Visit avionrewards.com/rewards or call 1-877-636-2870 to browse and shop for your desired items or gift cards. You can filter by category, brand, price, or points range.
  • Select the item or gift card you want and add it to your cart. You can use your points to pay for the full or partial cost of your reward, as long as you have enough to cover the minimum redemption amount of $25 (2,500 points).
  • Confirm your order and pay any taxes, fees, or shipping charges with your credit card or points. You will receive an order confirmation by email and your reward will be delivered to your address within 4-6 weeks.

Transferring Avion points to other programs

Another way to use your Avion points is to transfer them to other loyalty programs, such as airline, hotel, or retail partners. This can give you more options and value for your points, especially if you are loyal to a specific brand or program. You can also take advantage of promotions and bonuses that may offer higher transfer rates or extra rewards.

Some of the most popular programs that you can transfer your Avion points to are:

  • WestJet Rewards: You can transfer your Avion points to WestJet dollars at a 1:1 ratio, which means 1 Avion point = 1 WestJet dollar. WestJet dollars can be used to pay for the base fare of any WestJet flight or vacation package, with no blackout dates or restrictions. You can also enjoy benefits such as free checked bags, priority boarding, and lounge access with WestJet Rewards tiers.
  • British Airways Executive Club: You can transfer your Avion points to Avios at a 1:1 ratio, which means 1 Avion point = 1 Avios. Avios can be used to book flights, hotels, car rentals, and more with British Airways and its oneworld partners, such as American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas. You can also enjoy benefits such as priority check-in, seat selection, and lounge access with British Airways Executive Club tiers.
  • American Airlines AAdvantage: You can transfer your Avion points to AAdvantage miles at a 1:0.7 ratio, which means 1 Avion point = 0.7 AAdvantage mile. AAdvantage miles can be used to book flights, hotels, car rentals, and more with American Airlines and its oneworld partners, such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas. You can also enjoy benefits such as free checked bags, priority boarding, and lounge access with AAdvantage tiers.

To transfer your Avion points to other programs, you need to follow these steps:

  • Visit avionrewards.com/transfer or call 1-877-636-2870 to choose your desired program and enter the number of points you want to transfer. You can transfer as many or as few points as you want, as long as you have enough to cover the minimum transfer amount of 10,000 points.
  • Confirm your transfer and enter your program membership number and details. You will receive a confirmation by email and your points will be transferred to your program account within 2-4 business days.

How to get the best value for your Avion points

As you can see, Avion points have different values depending on how you use them. To get the most out of your points, you will want to follow these tips and tricks:

  • Redeem your points for travel using the Air Travel Redemption Schedule whenever possible, as it offers the highest value of up to 2.33 cents per point. Try to find flights that match or exceed the max ticket price for the zone, or pay the difference with your credit card or points if they are slightly over.
  • Use the conversion rate only if you cannot find a flight that fits the Air Travel Redemption Schedule, or if you want more flexibility and choice for your travel plans. The conversion rate offers a flat value of 1 cent per point, which is lower than the schedule, but still decent for travel rewards.
  • Transfer your points to other programs only if you are loyal to a specific brand or program, or if you can take advantage of promotions and bonuses that may offer higher transfer rates or extra rewards. Otherwise, you may lose value by transferring your points, as some programs have lower redemption rates or higher fees and surcharges than Avion.
  • Compare the value of your points with the cash price of your reward before you redeem them. Sometimes, it may be better to pay with cash and save your points for a higher value redemption in the future. A good rule of thumb is to aim for at least 1.5 cents per point in value, which is the average value of Avion points.
  • Earn more points by spending on RBC Avion credit cards, especially on travel purchases, which offer bonus points. You can also earn more points by taking advantage of sign-up bonuses, referral bonuses, and promotional offers from RBC and its partners.
  • Choose the best RBC Avion credit card for your needs, based on your spending habits, preferences, and goals. The RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege Card offers the highest earning rate and the most benefits and perks, but it also has the highest annual fee. The RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card offers a good balance of value and features, while the RBC Avion Visa Platinum Card offers a lower annual fee and a simpler earning structure.
  • The RBC Avion Visa Infinite Business Card and the RBC Avion Visa Business Card are ideal for business owners who want to earn and redeem Avion points for their business expenses. The RBC ION+ Visa and the RBC ION Visa are great for everyday spending, as they offer high earning rates on groceries, gas, and transit. The RBC Rewards+ Visa Signature, the RBC Rewards Visa, the RBC Rewards Visa Preferred, the RBC U.S. Dollar Visa Gold, and the RBC Visa CreditLine for Small Business are good options for low or no annual fee cards that still earn Avion points.

Avion points are one of the most flexible and rewarding travel currencies in Canada. They can be earned and redeemed with RBC Avion credit cards, which offer a variety of options and benefits for different types of travelers. Avion points can be redeemed for flights, hotels, car rentals, and more with any airline, any time, using the Air Travel Redemption Schedule or the conversion rate. They can also be transferred to other loyalty programs, such as WestJet Rewards, British Airways Executive Club, and American Airlines AAdvantage. Avion points have different values depending on how you use them, so you will want to choose the option that gives you the most bang for your buck.

Best credit cards, back to guides, rbc avion chart: book one-way flights starting at 7,500 points.

RBC Avion is making a favourable change to its Air Travel Redemption Schedule, now allowing one-way redemptions for half the cost as a round-trip.

RBC has made a positive change to its Air Travel Redemption Schedule, which makes RBC Avion points slightly more useful when redeeming directly for flights rather than converting to airline partners.

RBC Avion Fixed-Price Chart: Now Applicable to One-Way Flights

RBC’s Air Travel Redemption Schedule can be used by RBC Avion cardholders, and reads as follows:

The chart specifies a fixed number of Avion points required to book any given flight from Canada to one of the six geographic regions. The Avion points required will cover the base fare that you’d otherwise pay when purchasing airfare, up to a certain maximum ticket price.

Any amounts beyond the maximum ticket price, as well as the taxes and fees on the ticket, would be payable separately from the Avion points stated on the chart – either as a cash supplement, or by redeeming additional Avion points at a ratio of 100 points = $1.

Until now, this redemption option was available for round-trip flights departing from Canada only.

This meant that its overall utility was fairly limited, especially for Avion points collectors who prefer to redeem points for business class whenever possible, rather than a full round-trip in economy class.

The good news is that RBC has now relaxed this requirement and is offering the ability to redeem Avion points for one-way flights at exactly half the Avion points required, with exactly half the maximum ticket price:

Note that both the one-way and round-trip redemption avenues are only available to RBC Avion cardholders, and not to lower-tier RBC Rewards cardholders.

Use RBC Avion One-Way Redemptions for Positioning Flights

The flexibility of a one-way flight is often a lot more practical, especially since it’s priced at exactly half of the round-trip redemption.

In particular, Avion points can now be redeemed rather attractively for “positioning flights”, which refers to short one-way flights that you take for the purpose of tagging onto a more valuable long-haul flight departing out of a different city.

Generally speaking, there tends to be a lot more premium cabin availability and routing opportunities for First Class and business class flights out of major US gateway cities: New York, Boston, Chicago, Washington, San Francisco, Los Angeles, or Seattle.

Therefore, the ability to redeem just 7,500–17,500 Avion points for a one-way flight from Canada down to one of these major US gateways makes Avion points a little more valuable compared to before.

For example, if you live in Montreal or Toronto and wanted to fly Japan Airlines First Class using Alaska miles , your best bet would be to search for award space out of New York JFK.

You’d then need a separate flight to get yourself down to New York, on which you’d most likely be happy with economy class due to the short duration. This could be booked using cash, Aeroplan points , Air Miles – or now with only 7,500 Avion points to cover up to $175 in base fare for the one-way ticket.

The same idea applies to booking, say, Qatar Airways Qsuites out of Seattle if you live in Vancouver. Unless you wanted to take the bus , you’d need a short flight down to Seattle to begin the journey, and 7,500 Avion points could help take care of that.

Now, you wouldn’t necessarily redeem Avion points every  time; instead, it’s simply a useful option to have if, say, you were sitting on a larger stash of Avion points than other programs, or you preferred to save your Aeroplan points for a higher-value redemption in the future.

Plus, the short-haul “Quick Getaways” redemption option under the RBC chart actually delivers quite an impressive redemption value of 2.33 cents per point (cpp) if fully maximized, so it isn’t a bad use of your Avion points at all.

Besides the “Quick Getaways” at 7,500 Avion points one-way, the “Explore North America” pricing of 17,500 Avion points one-way also look pretty attractive to me, since it’ll take you anywhere within Canada or the continental US.

If you’re happy to travel in economy class within North America (keeping in mind that the major US airlines’ domestic “First Class” products aren’t much to write home about anyway), then 17,500 Avion points for $375 in maximum base fare results in a respectable redemption value of 2.14cpp.

When it comes to the more expensive redemption options to places beyond North America, however, I’d shy away from the one-way redemptions with Avion points.

That’s because one-way airfare pricing beyond North America tends to cost more than half the round-trip pricing, so you might overshoot the maximum ticket price and have to pay extra cash for a so-so redemption in the first place.

With competition heating up among Canadian bank and loyalty programs, RBC Avion is making a favourable change to its Air Travel Redemption Schedule, now allowing one-way redemptions for half the cost (and associated maximum ticket price) as a round-trip.

The 7,500 Avion points required to book short-haul one-way flights can be earned fairly easily, a few multiples at a time. RBC is offering welcome bonuses of up to 55,000 Avion points on three of their RBC Avion credit cards through mid-September, and product-switching a credit card also results in earning 15,000+ Avion points.

With this change, RBC’s chart has now become more useful for booking positioning flights using Avion points and paying less out-of-pocket as you seek out an aspirational flight departing out of a different city.

Air Miles was once the leading travel loyalty program in Canada but relaunched in June 2024 after many of its major retail partners left. It declared bankruptcy and was acquired by its partner , the Bank of Montreal, in 2023. Now, with the program touting increased flexibility and non-brand-specific Miles collection options, how does it stack up against its currently stronger competitor, Air Canada’s Aeroplan program?

Dive in and discover what separates Air Miles and Aeroplan apart from one another and if you find both programs too complicated and not straightforward enough, find out how they stack up to the alternatives out there to satisfy Canadians’ undying hunger for loyalty programs.

After all, most Canadians subscribe to between seven to 10 loyalty programs and even still, there are yet more people who can’t get enough-–belonging to 30 to 40 loyalty programs and linking their rewards credit cards to maximize every benefit.

Aeroplan is Air Canada’s travel rewards program. This frequent flyer program allows members to earn points when travelling with Air Canada and shopping with affiliated partner brands. Those points can then be redeemed toward travel purchases from Air Canada, Air Canada partners and Air Canada Vacations,  including flights, vacation packages, hotels and car rentals. Joining Aeroplan is free, and there are also Aeroplan-branded credit cards for those who want to earn Aeroplan points at an accelerated rate.

Air Miles is another Canadian travel rewards program. However, unlike Aeroplan, it is not tied to a specific airline. The Air Miles program is free to join and allows members to earn rewards when making purchases at grocery stores, liquor stores and wholesale stores. Those who collect Air Miles can choose between Dream Miles and Cash Miles. Dream Miles can be redeemed towards experiences such as travel, event tickets or merchandise through the Air Miles rewards website . Cash Miles can be redeemed for everyday spending at partner stores (like grocery shopping, etc.) or for eVouchers from popular brands like Starbucks, Cineplex, and Amazon . For those who want to earn Air Miles faster, you can also get an Air Miles credit card .

  • Canadian travel rewards programs
  • Free membership
  • Branded credit card options are available
  • Can use points towards travel and merchandise
  • Allow you to earn in-store or online through branded partners

Air Miles and Aeroplan programs can both be lucrative rewards programs for Canadians, so if you find yourself deciding between the two, here are a few things to consider to make the best decision.

  • What are your redemption goals? Aeroplan doesn’t have a cash-back option, while Air Miles does. Aeroplan and Air Miles offer travel redemption options, but if you fly often with Air Canada, Aeroplan will be more lucrative for you.
  • What are your spending or shopping habits? Look at the partners for each option to see where you are more likely to spend your money. Air Miles makes sense if you are a frequent shopper at Sobeys. You also want to consider your location. Different provinces have different partners, so look at the websites and compare.

Keep in mind that both of these are free programs, so you can double-dip and take advantage of both to maximize your potential. If you are looking for a branded credit card, it’s better to pick one. However, regarding their base free programs, why not sign up for both?

Aeroplan and Air Miles are loyalty programs worth looking into, but they are not the only options. Especially if you are looking into credit card rewards programs, some alternatives to Air Miles and Aeroplan that might interest you include the following.

  • American Express Membership Rewards: The American Express rewards program allows cardholders to use their points for travel and more. Higher-tier cards come with big perks like airport lounge access and travel credits. Plus, American Express Points can be converted to multiple airline and hotel loyalty program partners, including Aeroplan, at a one-to-one ratio.

  • Marriott Bonvoy: Marriott Bonvoy is a free rewards program that allows you to earn rewards for hotel stays. There are also Marriott Bonvoy-branded credit cards that allow you to earn points faster.
  • TD Rewards: TD Bank credit cards offer TD Rewards, which can be redeemed for travel (through Expedia  For TD ), merchandise, gift cards and more.
  • Scene+ Rewards: Scene+ Rewards is another free program that allows you to earn points when shopping at partner brands. You can also accelerate earning those points by getting a branded Scotiabank credit card . Scene+ Rewards can be used for travel, merchandise, movies, dining out and groceries .
  • CIBC Aventura: CIBC’s Aventura credit cards are the backbone of the bank’s main travel rewards program. Of course, you can also use your rewards towards other redemptions, but travel is the best value.
  • BMO Rewards: BMO Rewards are tied to specific BMO credit cards . With BMO Rewards points, you can travel, shop or invest.
  • WestJet Rewards: For Canadians who travel frequently with the WestJet Airline, there is the WestJet rewards program. Like Aeroplan, there are also WestJet-branded credit cards.

Are Aeroplan points the same as Air Miles?

Aeroplan and Air Miles are loyalty programs allowing you to earn points for travel, merchandise, and more. However, they are separate programs and are not associated with one another.

What are the disadvantages of Aeroplan?

Aeroplan is branded with Air Canada, which means you get the best value for your points when redeeming them specifically for Air Canada products (flights, vacations, etc.) rather than travel in general.

Can I use Air Miles for Air Canada?

Yes, you can use Air Miles for Air Canada. That being said, since Aeroplan is Air Canada’s reward program, if you fly frequently with Air Canada, it is likely more lucrative to collect Aeroplan points.

Are Air Miles worth it in Canada?

Air Miles used to be one of Canada’s top programs but has had a rough few years. The program’s parent company even filed for bankruptcy in 2023 before the program was acquired by the Bank of Montreal (BMO) . However, the new program has had a significant facelift and has been revamped to be more flexible and allow Canadians to earn faster. While it is still in the early days, we are excited about these changes.

Introduction to booking award travel

Many people think credit card rewards are convoluted and hard to use.

That's not necessarily true. With minimal effort, you can redeem credit card rewards for nearly free hotel stays, rental cars, airfare and more. The convoluted part is learning to redeem rewards efficiently so you can squeeze every last drop of value from them.

This guide offers a crash course on quickly earning travel rewards from the best credit cards so you can book amazing travel deals for far less than cash value. We'll also share the knowledge you need to find these great rates on your own.

Nearly free travel is possible with credit card rewards

Before collecting credit card rewards, identify your travel goals. Not all credit card rewards accomplish the same outcome. For example:

  • If you want free flights, you should collect airline miles
  • If you want free hotel stays, you should collect hotel points
  • If you want free food and other expenses, you should collect cash back
  • And if you want some combination of all three benefits, you should collect flexible or transferable points , which we'll discuss below

The fastest way to accumulate rewards is by earning credit card welcome bonuses. Most rewards credit cards come with a chunk of either points, miles, or cash that will deposit into your account after you meet minimum spending requirements .

There are dozens of credit card welcome offers available — quite literally millions of points and miles to be earned — if you're willing to open credit cards and earn their bonuses.

Many rewards credit cards also provide bonus points when you spend money in certain categories. You'll earn points for your everyday purchases far more quickly   if you take the time to identify and acquire the right handful of credit cards for your personal spending habits.

Opening multiple credit cards

You've probably been conditioned to believe that opening multiple credit cards harms your financial health. It's not — at least, there's nothing intrinsically irresponsible about it. As long as you pay off your balance in full every month and don't spend beyond your means, credit cards can be valuable tools for your finances and travel habits.

If you use credit responsibly, your credit score may actually increase after opening more credit cards , which we explore in Business Insider's guide on how to get an excellent credit score . And with healthy usage, your cards can provide significantly more value than what you might pay in annual fees .

Don't overspend to earn rewards

If you don't have the best track record with credit, or if you simply don't think you're responsible enough to open lots of credit cards, don't do it. Rewards credit cards come with outlandish interest rates . In other words, unless you're able to pay your credit card in full each month, you'll pay out the nose in fees. And accruing debt on a rewards credit card isn't easy to overcome.

It's also a good rule of thumb to keep from jumping into credit card rewards until you have a credit score of at least 700. This will give you the best chance of being approved for pretty much any card you want.

Earning transferable points

Transferable points are the real powerhouse in the flexible rewards space. Transferable points are popular among travelers for two primary reasons:

  • They're easy to earn. Each flexible points currency can be earned on multiple different credit cards within that issuer's ecosystem. Most of these cards also earn bonus points on specific categories of spend.
  • Points transfer to multiple airline and hotel partners. This is helpful if you have various travel goals and don't want to limit yourself to a single airline or hotel currency. For example, if you want to stay at both Hilton and Marriott properties, you could collect Amex Membership Rewards points, which transfer to both hotel programs.

So, you've earned a stash of points, miles, and/or cash back. Now, what are you going to do with them?

The world of miles and points can be a bit complex. Let's look at a quick explainer of how to use each type of reward. Once you understand how they work, you'll understand how to find good deals.

Airline miles

Let's get a misconception out of the way first: Each airline mile you collect does not give you the ability to travel on a plane for 5,280 feet. In other words, just because you've collected 24,901 miles doesn't mean you can circumnavigate the Earth. Perhaps it's less confusing to just think of them as airline rewards.

Airlines have different ways of pricing award flights:

  • Some price award seats according to the distance you fly (British Airways does this)
  • Some price them according to the country or regions you're flying between (Air Canada Aeroplan does this)
  • Some price them according to the cash rate of the ticket you want to book (Southwest does this)
  • Some price them according to a secret algorithm that makes seemingly no sense to the naked eye (American Airlines does this)

Once you learn these guidelines, you can plan ahead for the cost of travel on certain airlines.

Most airlines have a large network of airline partners. This is important because you can usually use your miles to book flights on partner airlines, as well. For example, if you collect American Airlines miles, you can use them to book award travel on American Airlines as well as the following partners:

  • Air Tahiti Nui
  • Alaska Airlines
  • British Airways
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Etihad Airways
  • Fiji Airways
  • GOL Airlines
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Japan Airlines
  • Malaysia Airlines
  • Qantas Airways
  • Qatar Airways
  • Royal Air Maroc
  • Royal Jordanian Airlines
  • Silver Airways
  • SriLankan Airlines

As you can see, American Airlines miles can get you pretty much anywhere in the world.

Hotel points

Hotel points work similarly to airline miles:

  • Some hotels charge a points price that fluctuates according to the cash price of the room (Hilton does this)
  • Some hotel programs place each property into a "category" with a somewhat fixed price, regardless of the cash price of the room (Hyatt does this)

For example, Hyatt charges between 17,000 and 23,000 points per night for a "Category 5" Hyatt hotel. The Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach is a Category 5 hotel. That means even if the hotel costs $1,000 per night, you'll never pay more than 23,000 points for a standard room.

Flexible rewards

Flexible rewards, as the name implies, can be used in various ways. Let's examine the three most popular redemption options.

Redeem for cash

Depending on the type of points you have, you can redeem them for cash at varying rates:

  • Amex Membership Rewards points — 0.6 cents per point on average, or up to 1.1 cents per point on select cards
  • Bilt Rewards — 0.5 cents per point
  • Capital One miles — 0.5 cents per point
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards points — 1 cent per point
  • Citi ThankYou points — 0.5 cents per point (1 cent if you've got select cards)
  • Wells Fargo Rewards — 1 cent per point

In nearly every single scenario, cash back is not a good redemption option with these points. If you're interested in cash back, you should be using cash-back credit cards instead of travel credit cards .

"Buy" travel through a portal

All flexible rewards can be used to reserve things like airfare, hotel stays, rental cars, and more through a proprietary bank portal at a fixed rate, though the rate can depend on the credit card you have.

  • Amex Membership Rewards points — 0.7 to 1 cent per point through the Amex Travel Portal
  • Bilt Rewards — 1.25 cents each through the Bilt Travel Portal
  • Capital One miles — 1 cent per point through Capital One Travel
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards points — Between 1 cent and 1.5 cents per point (depending on which card you have) through the Chase Travel Portal
  • Citi ThankYou points — 1 cent per point through the Citi Travel Portal

Transfer to valuable travel partners

Converting your rewards into airline miles and hotel points gives them the most potential. Each flexible points currency offers its own unique transfer partners. Here's a quick rundown of each program with its transfer partners. All transfer ratios are 1:1 unless otherwise specified.

You can also redeem flexible rewards for purchases such as gift cards, merchandise, your Amazon cart, and even student loans, but you'll often find that the value per point is quite poor compared to the value you could get from redeeming for travel.

Just because you can book a free flight or hotel stay with credit card rewards doesn't mean you should . Believe it or not, "free" isn't always a good deal. Sometimes, it's wiser to pay with cash.

Most points and miles currencies don't have a firm value. Depending on the way you redeem them, you can get wildly different return rates for your rewards. Discerning when you should use rewards and when you should use cash boils down to low-level algebra.

The magic formula

Whenever you're looking to reserve free travel with credit card rewards, you should know exactly how much value you're getting for your points. There's an easy formula to keep in mind:

(cash price of travel - award taxes and fees) / award cost in points = value per point

For example, a round-trip coach flight between Chicago and Venice costs $958 in late October. The award price for this trip is 60,000 United Airlines miles and $65 in taxes and fees.

Using the above formula, we will:

  • Subtract the $65 in taxes you'll pay with your award flight from the cash price of the ticket ($958 - $65 = $893).
  • Divide this new figure by the number of miles you'll pay ($893 / 60,000 = $0.014).

As you can see, booking this award ticket will give you a value of 1.4 cents per United Airlines mile. Since Business Insider values United miles at 1.3 cents apiece on average , you'd be getting slightly above-average value per point spent on this flight.

How much are points and miles worth to you?

Because the value you can receive from credit card rewards can vary so much, you'll have to decide what constitutes "good" value for your points and miles. Business Insider has its own points and miles valuations guide, created by experts who use credit card rewards constantly.

What you should know about traveling with credit card rewards

If you dedicate some time to learning the ins and outs of traveling on points, there's practically nowhere in the world that you can't go for pennies on the dollar.

Award travel frequently asked questions

Utilize award search tools and airline websites to compare redemption options. Consider transferring points to airline or hotel partners for better value, and pay attention to award charts to understand how many points or miles you'll need for your desired travel.

Look for airlines with lower fuel surcharges on award tickets. Booking domestic flights or using airlines that charge minimal fees for international routes can also help reduce costs.

Yes, most loyalty programs allow you to book travel for others using your points or miles. However, some programs may require the traveler to be a family member or designated nominee.

Every points system has its own redemption rules, and different "currencies" offer varying value. For uniformity, use Business Insider's guide to points and miles valuations to reference how much value you're getting from a potential flight or hotel stay.

In most cases, you'll have to book flights all in cash or all points. Some hotel chains allow you to combine points with cash for hotel stays, and credit card issuers often allow you to choose how many points you want to use to offset the cash price of a booking.

It isn't the end of the world if you can't find an award redemption. Consider booking an alternative route or destination, booking a cash backup but checking for award availability closer to your departure date, or plan far in advance and lock down reservations as soon as hotels or airlines open up award availability calendars.

Most points and miles experts agree that you'll get the best deals and availabilities on award flights is right when the airline opens up availability — up to 330 days in advance for some companies — or within a week or two of your departure date. You can also use deal-tracking apps and award search websites to set up alerts when award travel availability opens up.

Quick Points: Earn bonus points and miles by booking group travel

Rachel Craft

Trips with family and friends can be a blast for everyone involved — and a great opportunity for you to even earn extra points and miles. You can easily rack up bonus points or miles when you decide to book part or all of the travel for your entire group . Then, simply have your travel companions reimburse you for their shares.

I've planned several group outings, from girls weekends to multigenerational family trips , and stacked up tens of thousands of points and miles in the process. Here are some tips I've learned to maximize your rewards on group travel.

Related: Earn points and miles for referring friends to loyalty programs and credit cards

Set expectations with a travel budget

avion travel rewards booking

Before you start planning your big adventure, discuss options and set goals with the group. Where do you want to go? What kind of trip are you looking for? What's the budget?

Once the group has agreed on a rough plan, you can start the fun part: researching flights, hotels and excursions. Personally, I've found it's easier to organize group travel when one person is in charge; plus, most of my loved ones are happy not to be that person.

Shop around for travel discounts and deals

avion travel rewards booking

Just as you would when booking travel for yourself, be sure to check multiple avenues — including travel portals — to make sure you're getting the best price and the most points. Also, consider what type of rewards you'll earn (airline miles, hotel points or transferable points ) and how valuable they are to you.

For example, since many of my relatives are traveling to Colorado in October for my wedding, I offered to book hotel rooms for everyone. I found an affordable hotel near the wedding venue on the Chase Travel℠ portal, where I earned a whopping 10 points per dollar spent thanks to the double-points welcome offer on my Chase Freedom Unlimited® (offer no longer available).

The Chase Freedom Unlimited is currently offering an extra 1.5% on all purchases (on up to $20,000 spent in the first year) — worth up to $300 cash back. Therefore, you'll earn 6.5% on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 4.5% on dining and drugstores, and 3% on all other purchases.

As a result, I'm earning roughly 40,000 Ultimate Rewards points on a two-night hotel stay. These points are worth 2.05 cents each, according to TPG's July 2024 valuations , and I know I can maximize my points by transferring them to travel partners to book future trips.

Stay organized when planning travel

avion travel rewards booking

Travel planning can be stressful when you add more people to the mix, so staying organized and communicating is critical.

When my fiance and I planned a family cruise, we saved all relevant emails in a designated folder and tracked confirmation numbers and costs in a spreadsheet. Then, we forwarded the necessary information to each relative so they'd have everything they needed to meet us at the port.

As a result, the trip went smoothly for everyone — and we netted around 65,000 United Airlines miles by booking everyone's cabin through United's cruise portal .

Related: The best cruise lines for families

Bottom line

Booking a trip for a large group takes a little extra work, but it can pay off major dividends in the form of points and miles.

Think of it as a reward for putting in the work to ensure other people have a smooth vacation.

I've found booking trips for my friends and family fun, and most people are grateful to have someone else do the heavy lifting. Best of all, you'll share your love of travel with the people you love.
