Alan Carr's 'final straw' that led to ending marriage after 13 years with husband Paul

Alan Carr is back on our TV screens with his new game show. The ITV programme, titled 'Password', will features the comedian as a team captain alongside Daisy May Cooper. Contestants will be guided by them through various rounds, attempting to decipher mystery passwords for a chance to win £10,000.

Despite enjoying a thriving television career, which includes concluding another series of 'The Italian Job' with Amanda Holden and his semi-autobiographical series 'Changing Ends', Alan's personal life has hit some rough patches. In January 2022, he and his husband Paul announced their separation after over a decade together.

At the time of their split, they shared a joint statement: "After 13 years as a couple and three years of marriage, Alan Carr and Paul Drayton would like to announce they are separating. They have jointly and amicably made the difficult decision to divorce and go their separate ways. We request that their privacy is respected at this sensitive time."

Alan later discussed the reasons behind their separation, citing Paul's battle with alcohol addiction as a significant factor. In an interview with the Guardian, he disclosed that dealing with Paul's addiction had become 'too much for me', reports Birmingham Live .

Alan has opened up about his past problems with alcohol and admitted 'there have been times' when he's questioned if he drank too much. He recollected instances of forgetting his actions completely, one of which included an assault on his ex-partner during an inebriated episode and another instance where he sang outside a Liverpool McDonald's after his tour manager was assaulted by a group.

The comedian stated: "I know now that I'm not [an alcoholic] and seeing [alcoholism] first-hand, I realise I was nowhere near becoming one." Friends close to him at the time highlighted a defining 'final straw' that ended their relationship.

The fallout became public when Paul, Alan's partner, surprised his social media followers by posting an image on Instagram showing his face with a black eye, captioned: "We had a row."

He later clarified, ensuring everyone that "Alan would not and has never hit me" and expressed his upset about Alan dealing with these allegations. The Daily Mail reported friends of Alan who described the event as the final tipping point.

After calling it quits, Alan reflected on their split amidst the tribulations of the pandemic. While speaking on ITV's Lorraine, he revealed: "I wrote the tour, and then our marriage broke down during Covid , because it was so stressful, everything ... And then I was going on stage and I was just like, 'Well this doesn't make sense, this doesn't make sense."

"So we're divorced now, he's excited about the future, I'm excited about the future. We're still always going to be friends because we've been through so much together."

This admission of their split comes in the wake of Paul's court hearing, where he was issued a 14-week custodial sentence after he reversed his 4x4 into a police car and was found with an alarmingly high alcohol level.

However, after just two nights behind bars, Paul was released when a judge ruled that he should be given a chance to amend for his actions. A 12-week suspended prison sentence for two years was handed down instead.

Comedian Alan Carr's tour manager was seriously assaulted outside a McDonald's restaurant after trying to stop fans taking photos of the star.

Elliott Andrews was attacked by Jaleel Burman in Liverpool city centre after getting worried about people crowding around the star, who was in the city as part of his UK tour.

Mr Andrews was ushered outside the fast-food restaurant by the 29-year-old around 4am on September 20 last year. He was punched in the face before falling to the ground and fracturing his ankle.

Burman admitted causing grievous bodily harm at Liverpool Crown Court and could face jail when he is sentenced next month.

The court heard Mr Andrews grew increasingly agitated about his client being 'overwhelmed' by customers wanting selfies as they waited inside.

Mr Carr was badgered by some people who had been drinking, who were told to 'stop it' by his entourage, before Burman ushered Mr Andrews outside with the help of a girl.

The confrontation turned violent when Burman punched Mr Andrews in what prosecutors described as an unprovoked attack.

The tour manager, who has also worked with stars including Paolo Nutini, The Maccabees and Kate Nash, was taken to hospital with facial injuries and a broken ankle. The assault was said to have had a traumatic effect on him.

In a police interview, Burman, from Wavertree, Liverpool, said he launched himself at Mr Andrews in 'the heat of the moment'.

Rob Jones, prosecuting, added: 'Mr Andrews was a little bit excited by his client Mr Carr being overwhelmed by people wanting to take photos of him.

'The defendant's actions were way over the top, particularly after he escorted Mr Andrews out of the building.'

Judge Denis Watson, who ordered a pre-sentence report on Burman, told him: 'I'm told the CCTV is going to be very informative. All sentencing options will be open, including an immediate custodial sentence.'

Burman was released on unconditional bail.

The 46-year-old Chatty Man star fell during a recent live stand-up performance in Glasgow after doing a high-kick and suffering shooting pains in his leg.

Carr shared a picture of himself on stage supported by a crutch and said: "I’m just doing a post because people keep asking (sweetly) if I’m ok and just so you know my torn calf is on the mend."

He added: "It’s still sore and I’m still limping but it could have been a lot worse. Phew! Thanks for all your lovely comments and kind wishes - it really cheered me up."

Some audience members had originally believed Carr's collapse to be part of the act, and he finished the set supported on a crutch his tour manager pushed through the curtain onto the stage.

Carr explained in a video on Instagram after the gig: "I've been performing up in Glasgow and there's a bit in my routine where I pretend to be Jason Statham and I high-kicked, and then I got the worst cramp ever.

"Oh my God! It was shooting pains and I was rolling around on the floor, and people thought it was part of the act."

He added he had taken pain relief and was feeling 'healed'.

Carr concluded by saying: "I've never felt pain like it, but I will soldier on as I always do."

The chat show host and comic is currently on his Regional Trinket tour of Europe, some of which was pushed back from 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He is taking a break for the summer and is next due to perform on 2 September in Cardiff.

Carr announced his separation from husband Paul Drayton in January 2022.

Carr and Drayton dated for around 10 years before tying the knot in 2018 in singer Adele’s back garden.

The couple announced in a joint statement : "After 13 years as a couple and three years of marriage, Alan Carr and Paul Drayton would like to announce they are separating.

"They have jointly and amicably made the difficult decision to divorce and go their separate ways. We request that their privacy is respected at this sensitive time."

Drayton, who has struggled with addiction over the years, announced on Instagram that he was checking into rehab shortly after the split.

Alan Carr's tour manager attacked

Row with selfie-seekers ends in hospital trp

Elliott Andrews was attacked in a McDonald’s in Liverpool after a 4am fast-food trip turned ugly.

He had tried to tell the late-night crowd to stop badging the comic after they 'overwhelmed' him. But he was then bundled outside by Jaleel Burman.

Burman, 29, then punched Andrews hard to his face, causing him to fall to the ground and fracture his ankle, a court has heard.

The assault – after Carr's Yap Yap Yap tour show at the Philharmonic Hall on September 19 last year –  was said to have had a 'traumatic effect' on Andrews.

The Liverpool Echo today reports that Burman admitted causing grievous bodily harm and was warned he could face jail when he is sentenced next month.

Prosecutor Rob Jones had told Liverpool Crown Court: 'The defendant’s actions were way over the top, particularly after he escorted Mr Andrews out of the building.'

Andrews has also worked as tour manager for the likes of Paolo Nutini, The Maccabees and Kate Nash.

The Philharmonic Hall was not good to comics last year – a month after the attack on Andrews, Bill Bailey had his tour van stolen from the venue.

Alan Carr is back on our TV screens tonight with the launch of a new game show. The ITV show - called Password -will see the comedian become a team captain along with Daisy May Cooper to help players guess mystery passwords across multiple rounds as they try to win £10,000.

Despite his flourishing television career, including wrapping up another series of 'The Italian Job' with Amanda Holden and his semi-autobiographical series 'Changing Ends', Alan's personal life has faced turbulent waters. In January 2022, Alan and his husband Paul decided to part ways after 13 years together.

At the time of their split, they released a joint statement saying: "After 13 years as a couple and three years of marriage, Alan Carr and Paul Drayton would like to announce they are separating. They have jointly and amicably made the difficult decision to divorce and go their separate ways. We request that their privacy is respected at this sensitive time."

Alan later opened up about the reasons behind their separation, attributing it to Paul's struggle with alcohol addiction, which he admitted had become 'too much' for him to handle. Speaking to the Guardian, he revealed that Paul's addiction 'just got too much for me'.

Alan has also reflected on his own relationship with alcohol, mentioning 'there have been times' when he's questioned his drinking habits. He recounted several incidents where he had no recollection of his actions, including an occasion where he attacked his ex in a drunken state and sang outside a McDonald's in Liverpool after his tour manager was seriously injured by a gang.

Alan was adamant when he said: "I know now that I'm not [an alcoholic] and seeing [alcoholism] first-hand, I realise I was nowhere near becoming one." Close pals of the comedian at the time of the breakup maintained there was a 'final straw' that brought an end to the relationship.

The split came into the public eye after Paul shocked his followers by sharing a photo of himself with a black eye on Instagram. Accompanying the image, he wrote: "We had a row."

He later assured everyone that "Alan would not and has never hit me" and shared his distress over Alan having to face this ordeal. The Daily Mail cited sources close to Alan claiming the incident was the last straw.

Post-separation, Alan reflected on the breakdown of their marriage during the pandemic. On ITV's Lorraine, he shared: "I wrote the tour, and then our marriage broke down during Covid , because it was so stressful, everything ... And then I was going on stage and I was just like, 'Well this doesn't make sense, this doesn't make sense."

"So we're divorced now, he's excited about the future, I'm excited about the future. We're still always going to be friends because we've been through so much together."

The ex-couple had faced other challenges in their marriage as well. This confirmation of their parting came after Paul's court appearance, where he was handed a 14-week prison sentence for reversing a 4X4 into a police vehicle and recording an alcohol level that was shockingly high.

After spending merely two nights in jail, a judge decided he should be given the opportunity to better his behaviour. He received a 12-week suspended prison sentence for two years.

You can watch Alan on the new game show Passwords on ITV1 at 9.40pm on Saturday, August 31.

Alan Carr's manager was beaten up by a McDonald's bouncer at a branch of the fast food chain after trying to stop swarming fans taking selfies with the star comedian .

Manager Andrew Elliot became frustrated with hordes of fans who were pestering the Chatty Man presenter for pictures at the packed restaurant in Lord Street, Liverpool.

But as TV personality Carr was "overwhelmed" by customers, Mr Andrews became "somewhat excitable", a court heard, and had to be escorted outside by security guard Jaleel Burman.

The 21-year-old, of Wavertree, Liverpool, then punched Mr Andrews hard in the face, causing him to fall to the ground and break his ankle.

Burman, who claimed the manager had been abusive to him, has now admitted grievous bodily harm at a hearing at Liverpool Crown Court.

Carr was enjoying a night out in Liverpool after performing at the Philharmonic Hall the previous evening as part of his "Yap Yap Yap" tour of the UK and Ireland.

Liverpool Crown Court heard how the performer and his manager were getting some food at around 4.20am on September 20 last year.

Mr Andrews became increasingly agitated about Carr being badgered by customers, who were told to "stop it" by the Channel 4 comic’s entourage.

Simon Duncan, prosecuting, said Burman, acting on instruction, ushered the unhappy Mr Andrews outside.

Their confrontation was captured on CCTV as Burman punched Mr Andrews in an unprovoked attack.

Mr Duncan said: “He felt a burning sensation to his right ankle and blood coming from the inside of his mouth.”

Mr Andrews, who has worked with other stars including Paolo Nutini, The Maccabees, Kate Nash and Ladyhawke, dialled 999 and was taken to hospital.

He suffered a cut inside his mouth, one to the corner of his mouth which needed stitching, and a broken ankle, which had to be put in plaster.

When arrested and interviewed by police, Burman told officers he was asked to remove Mr Andrews by a member of staff but had no idea why.

Mr Duncan said: “He said there was clearly resistance on the part of the complainant when he was trying to move him and some verbal abuse.

“Initially he claimed he was acting in self-defence, but when shown the video footage, particularly of him throwing the punch outside, he accepted he was at fault.

“He expressed some remorse for his actions and said if he saw the complainant again he would apologise to him.”

Burman, who admitted causing grievous bodily harm, had no previous convictions.

Mr Duncan conceded that Mr Andrews, who said he had been drinking and was “merry but not too drunk”, had “appeared to be somewhat excitable”.

The court heard Mr Andrews had to live with his parents for several weeks after the attack and underwent physiotherapy because he was struggling to walk.

He said he was left with scarring to his cheek and inside his mouth, but the court heard there were no pictures of his injuries.

Judge Norman Wright said he needed an up-to-date victim statement about Mr Andrews’ condition.

He adjourned sentencing until March 30 and remanded Burman on bail.
