Planning Your Visit

winery tours escondido

When planning a visit to the best wineries in Escondido, CA, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

First, consider making reservations in advance. Many wineries in Escondido, especially the popular ones, require reservations for tastings and tours. This will help avoid any disappointment or long wait times upon arrival.

Next, research the staff and customer service of the wineries you plan to visit. Some wineries have knowledgeable and friendly staff who are happy to answer questions and provide recommendations, while others may have less attentive staff. Reading reviews online can help provide insight into the level of customer service you can expect.

Another important factor to consider is the selection of wines available at each winery. Some wineries specialize in certain types of wines, such as reds or whites, while others offer a wider variety. Researching the wineries’ websites or calling ahead can help ensure that they have wines that suit your preferences.

When planning your visit, it’s also a good idea to consider using an app or website to help organize your itinerary. Some popular options include WineCountry.com, which offers a customizable itinerary builder, and the Escondido Winery Guide app, which provides information on local wineries and events.

Finally, keep in mind that Escondido is located in San Diego County, so visitors may want to consider exploring other attractions in the area, such as the San Diego Zoo or the beaches of La Jolla.

History of Winemaking in Escondido

Escondido has a rich history of winemaking that dates back to the late 1800s. The region’s warm and sunny climate, coupled with its fertile soil, makes it an ideal location for growing vineyards.

The first vineyard in Escondido was established in 1886 by John Skinner, who planted grapevines on his property. Soon after, other farmers followed suit and began planting their own vineyards. By the early 1900s, Escondido had become a hub for winemaking in Southern California.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Prohibition dealt a severe blow to the wine industry in Escondido. Many vineyards were abandoned, and the region’s winemaking heritage was nearly lost. However, in the 1960s, a group of winemakers, including the owners of Bernardo Winery, began to revive the industry.

Today, Escondido is home to a thriving wine scene, with numerous vineyards and wineries producing high-quality wines. Many of these wineries offer estate tasting rooms where visitors can sample their wines and learn about the winemaking process.

Escondido’s winemakers are known for their expertise in growing a variety of grapes, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Zinfandel. While the region may not have the same reputation as Napa or Sonoma, its winemakers are dedicated to producing exceptional wines that showcase the unique terroir of the region.

Comparing Escondido to Other Wine Regions

winery tours escondido

Escondido, CA is a hidden gem in the world of winemaking. While it may not be as well-known as other wine regions in California, such as Napa Valley or Sonoma, Escondido has a lot to offer in terms of quality wines and beautiful vineyards.

Compared to Temecula, another Southern California wine region, Escondido has a smaller number of wineries. However, the wineries in Escondido tend to be more focused on producing high-quality wines, rather than catering to large crowds of tourists.

When compared to Napa Valley, Escondido has a more laid-back atmosphere. While Napa Valley is known for its luxurious wineries and high-end restaurants, Escondido offers a more relaxed and casual experience.

Red blends are a popular type of wine in Escondido, with many wineries producing their own unique blends. However, Napa Valley is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, while Sonoma is known for its Pinot Noir.

Ramona and Julian, two nearby wine regions, also offer quality wines, but they have a more rustic feel compared to Escondido. Carruth Cellars, a winery with locations in both Escondido and Carlsbad, is known for its urban winemaking style, while Tinto, a winery in Escondido, specializes in Spanish-style wines.

Overall, Escondido offers a unique and enjoyable wine experience that is worth exploring. Whether you are a wine connoisseur or just looking for a fun day trip, Escondido’s wineries are sure to impress.

The history of Escondido

Long before Spanish explorers and other European settlers set foot in Escondido, California, the land was inhabited by indigenous people who had villages scattered throughout the region, and lived closely with the land. Both the Kumeyaay and the Diegueno tribes called the area that is now Escondido home.

By the year 1776, the first Spanish explorers made their way to the region, including Juan Bautista de Anza, who is credited with discovering Escondido. According to experts, the growing of grapes in Escondido dates all the way back to the 1700's - some of the first grapes in California were grown here. Early settlers found the lush and the soil is rich - perfect for vineyards.

Later, the area was part of a land grant by the Mexican government. Eventually the land grant was acquired by the Escondido Land and Town Company in 1886. The land was laid out for a town and sectioned off into small farms that would grow grapes and citrus and eventually develop into the thriving wine region we know and love.

If you want to enjoy drinking fine wine in a fun and causal setting, head to Cordiano Winery. Cordiano Winery is a family owned and operated boutique winery that blends the tradition of the Old Country with the delicious California grown grapes. Owners Gerardo and Rosa Cordiano moved to New York City from Italy in the 1970's and eventually opened their own pizza chain throughout the Southern United States.

It only took one visit to San Diego in the 1990 to convince the family to move to Escondido. Gerardo and Rosa opened several successful restaurants throughout San Diego County, but Gerardo always dreamed of pursuing his love of winemaking. Finally, in 2000 that dream became a reality. He sold his restaurants and began growing wine. Cordiano Winery opened to the public in 2008. The friendly environment and warm hospitality delight visitors - and the thin-crust pizza and flavorful wines keep them people coming back time and time again.
