A massive new cruise ship is set to function as a floating hotel for the Qatar World Cup, and rooms start at $220 a night. Take a look inside.

  • MSC Cruises launched a new luxury liner ahead of the Qatar World Cup.
  • The ship is expected to host more than 6,700 fans at the World Cup.
  • A single night's stay on the docked ship during the World Cup starts at $220.

MSC Cruises just launched a new cruise liner called the MSC World Europa. The luxury cruise is currently moored in Doha, Qatar, and is expected to host thousands of fans during the World Cup in November.

Chantiers de l'Atlantique, one of the world's biggest shipyards, started construction on MSC World Europa in 2019. The ship was fully constructed and delivered to MSC Cruises in October, and it's scheduled for its maiden voyage around the Middle East in December.

MSC World Europa is slated to be used as a hotel for fans at the Qatar World Cup from November 19 to December 19.

MSC Cruises did not reply to Insider's requests for comment.

MSC Europa is the largest ship in the cruise line's fleet — it has a gross tonnage of 215,863. In comparison, the Titanic had a gross tonnage of 46,328, which is about four times less.

The MSC Poesia and MSC Opera, two other cruises in the fleet, are also currently docked in Doha to accommodate fans. MSC Cruises has a  fleet of 22 ships.

The massive ship has 22 decks and 2,626 cabins, which means it can accommodate more than 6,700 guests at a time.

The ship is large enough to accommodate 2,138 crew members.

The ship is designed with a yacht club, which is an area exclusive to VIP guests.

The yacht club has 152 cabins and two suites, accounting for a fraction of the 2,626 cabins on board. Its amenities include a private pool and 24-hour butler service.

Booking up a yacht club cabin for the ship's nine-day maiden voyage start from $2,290.

A nine-day cruise around Qatar and the United Arab Emirates costs around $1,070 for an entry-level interior cabin. The ship is expected to begin cruising after the World Cup in December.

There are four main room categories on board: interior, balcony, suite, and yacht club, cruise booking website Clean Cruising shows. The interior cabin does not have windows, a virtual tour shows.

During the duration of the World Cup, however, the ship will stay docked in Doha, and will be used as a floating hotel.

A night's stay at the docked MSC Europa is slated to start from $220 per person. Prices fluctuate according to which stage of the tournament is being held on the day of the accommodation.

MSC Europa claims it's home to the world's longest dry slide in a ship, which spans 11 decks.

There are six pools and 14 whirlpool baths on board.

There's also a spa with thermal baths, in addition adults-only pools and water facilities made specifically for children.

There are 10 dining venues on board, including four main restaurants, three buffets, and six specialty restaurants.

Restaurants on board include a sushi bar, a tacos and cantina restaurant, and a steakhouse.

The ship also has 21 bars and lounges, as well as a casino.

In addition to the casino, there's a massive panoramic lounge that's slated to host dozens of music-themed experiences. The ship also has luxury boutiques, a water park, a sports complex with a bumper cars, and video arcades.

After MSC Europa's winter tour, it's expected to cruise in the Mediterranean.

The ship's summer tour is expected to begin on April 16. It's slated to cruise for eight days at a time, across six places in Europe: Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa, Naples, Messina, and Malta.

Doha Cruise Port

Qatar 0 Comments 4787 Views

Doha represents an amazing combination of the old and the new. Skyscrapers here coexist with the century-old city sites and oriental bazaars, whereas its new cruise terminal is considered one of the best in the entire Middle East.

Where Cruise Port Is Located

Before the year 2022, cruise ships docked at Hamad cargo port located 40 kilometers from the center and it was inconvenient to get everywhere from it.

And yet, a new modern cruise terminal “Grand Cruise Terminal” was built for the FIFA World Cup in 2022. Located not far from the city center it is currently the main one. This new cruise terminal can simultaneously accommodate 2 cruise ships and 7000 passengers.

The cruise terminal building is wholly new and modern. Inside, a large aquarium “meeting” passengers can be found inside.

Three cruise ships to arrive at Doha Port’s new Grand Cruise terminal Qatar

Three cruise ships to arrive at Doha Port’s new Grand Cruise terminal Qatar

The Grand Cruise Terminal will soon be unveiled at the newly renovated Old Doha Port, also called as the Mina District, which is a crucial tourist attraction during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. Three new cruise ships are expected to arrive at this terminal and the first of those ships is the MSC World Europa.

The MSC World Europa is the first passenger ship to dock at the Grand Cruise Terminal on November 10. It is also a part of the three cruise ships repertoire that will also play the role of three floating hotels during the World Cup. The terminal and the Old Port is an attempt to revive the old connection between Doha and the sea, and features a classic Arab design.

The Grand Cruise Terminal at Doha Port has already been crowned as “one of the world’s most beautiful cruise terminals” by Forbes. It will also feature an aquarium and an art gallery. The new terminal located at Doha Port will keep Doha and the Gulf accessible during the tournament and post that. Qatar Tourism estimates that the terminal will welcome more than 300,000 passengers each year.

Where does the ship dock in Doha?

Cool Cruiser

We are going on a cruise in February around the arabian gulf and are confused.

On the app, it says we dock at Hamad Port, which is really far away from the downtown. However reading comments and looking at the real time position of the ship, it looks like it docks at the Doha Port which is really closer. Does anyone know where we dock?

Hi Markorop, I can not answer your question about the correct dock in Doha but I did read a recent review (Jan1 2023) on trip advisor regarding MSC Europa and some confusion over the dock in Doha. You might want to read it, if you haven't already. It is titled "Style without substance..." From the review it appears that many people did go to the incorrect port in Doha, so your concern has validity. If you google MSC Europa reviews the review should come up. Hopeful by the time you sail MSC should have sorted out all the bugs. Hope you have a great time.

I read the review and it confirms the confusion. A lot of people went to the Hamad port (the one indicated on the app) but the actual leaving port was the Doha port (which is new so MSC probably haven’t updated their information)

Pretty sure it’s safe to assume they dock in Doha port, thank you!

Not so new, a couple of years already. The ship docks indeed opposite Stadium 974, Googlemaps marks the position as Cruise Ship Hotel - MSC Poesia (at least now).

Doha, Qatar

Doha is the capitol of Qatar and home to more than 80% of the population of this small, wealthy nation on the Arabian Peninsula. The city hosts several museums showcasing the country's heritage and proud history, as well as traditional art. Visitors can take in the city and its seaside parks along the Corniche, a waterfront road popular with locals and foreigners alike. Because Doha contains a large number of expatriates from around the world, restaurants offering almost any type of cuisine can be found in the city. Doha is also the primary headquarters of Al-Jazeera, the influential Arab-language television network.

This couple went on one cruise together. Now, they're moving onto a never-ending residential cruise ship.

In June 2022, Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin went on their first cruise together.

Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin sold their car rental business in Hawaii to move onto the residential cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey.Lanette Canen

  • A couple left Hawaii to move onto the residential cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey .
  • Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin went on one cruise together before buying their Odyssey cabin.
  • The ship plans to sail around the world every 3 years. Its departure has been delayed by three months.

Recommended articles

First-timers often gravitate toward short sailings . Not Canen and Bodin — self-described "all-or-nothing kind of people" — whose inaugural voyage was more than two weeks long.

"Most people said we'd be tired of being on the ship in three, four, or five days," Bodin recalled. "16 days came up, and we didn't want to leave."

But as much as they enjoyed the experience, it was the last time they went on a vacation at sea. Cruising wasn't the couple's biggest passion — they preferred traveling the world.

That is, until this spring, when Canen and Bodin, both 54, uprooted their lives in Maui, Hawaii, to move onto a new residential cruise ship called Villa Vie Odyssey .

The 509-cabin vessel is readying to set sail after a three-month delay to its departure. It plans to circumnavigate the world every 3 years, sailing to 147 countries and 425 destinations along the way. Ports span Europe, Asia, Australia, South and North America, and Africa.

On board, residents would have access to amenities similar to those on traditional cruise liners, such as restaurants, bars and lounges, a pool, and a golf simulator.

Mikael Petterson, the founder and CEO of Villa Vie Residences , told Business Insider in an email on August 19 that Villa Vie Odyssey would embark from Belfast, Ireland "any day now." He said it's "impossible to say which day exactly" as the ship is still waiting for "the green light from DNV." (DNV is a certification and risk assessment firm for the maritime industry.)

Villa Vie's promise of a floating hotel and a slower pace of travel lured Canen and Bodin. They both wanted to see the world without having to journey by plane and train, unpacking and repacking at every destination.

So, in September 2023, the couple sent Villa Vie a $10,000 deposit to reserve a cabin on a future floating home.

She's particularly excited to see Asia, while he's looking forward to the beaches of the South Pacific Islands.

"Why would I live in Maui when I could travel the world," Canen told BI. "We're old enough where we just want experiences now."

The couple sold their business in Maui

The couple said they sold their car rental business in Maui — a fleet of 31 vehicles listed on Turo — to buy their "obstructed view" cabin on Odyssey. (They declined to disclose the price, but windowless inside cabins are currently listed at $100,000, while those with ocean views are $50,000 more.)

They also have to pay $3,500 in monthly fees. But Canen, who plans to run her auto glass company remotely from the ship, said her income would cover this additional expense.

Their cabin is small, and a lifeboat obstructs its view, "but we're going to use it as our bedroom and the rest of the ship as our living room," Canen told BI. She said living in Maui is "way more expensive" than the Odyssey. "We're traveling on a budget. It's very affordable for the two of us."

The lifelong voyage was initially scheduled to set sail in May following Villa Vie's acquisition of Fred Olsen Cruise Lines' more than 30-year-old Braemar vessel, now renamed Villa Vie Odyssey. However, the startup has said issues like the aging ship's rudder stocks and recertification have delayed its departure by three months.

Like other would-be Villa Vie cruisers, the couple left the US in May to make the ship's initial sail date. Since then, they've stayed in Europe in anticipation of its departure.

Residents can spend their days on Odyssey but aren't allowed to stay overnight yet. Petterson told BI that the company is providing residents with shuttles to and from the ship, food, drinks, excursions, and lodging — or a daily per diem for those who "choose to do their own thing."

"We went pretty much every day for two weeks and spent all day there until they kicked us off," Canen told BI. She would go to the business center to work while Bodin would record videos for their YouTube channel and edit them in the observatory lounge.

They say the food's been good — especially the barbecue — and they've had access to an open bar.

"We understand there are hiccups," Bodin told BI. "They're schmoozing us a bit to keep us happy. They're almost being too serviced-minded. I don't need to be pampered all the time."

In the interim, they've traveled to Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, and Sweden. The couple said Villa Vie has also sent them on various excursions, including a trip to the Canary Islands and a cruise to the Norwegian fjords.

"We're not suffering," Bodin said.

The industry is tumultuous

Canen and Bodin have seen firsthand how rocky the residential cruise industry can be.

Before committing to Odyssey, Canen and Bodin looked into Storylines, which plans to construct its own residential cruise ship, MV Narrative. But its $1 million-plus condos were out of the couple's budget. Nine former employees, consultants, and investors told BI in 2023 that they'd started to doubt Storyline's vessel would ever be built.

Bodin said The World , the only residential ship in operation since 2002, was also too expensive. Only a handful of its cabins are resold annually for between $2 million and $15 million, and buyers need a net worth of $10 million to be considered.

In March 2023, the pair reserved a stateroom on Life at Sea Cruises' three-year, around-the-world voyage, which would have set sail in November 2023. But they later requested a refund of their deposit.

Two weeks before its scheduled departure, Life at Sea canceled its voyage after failing to secure enough funding to purchase a ship. The company filed for bankruptcy in July of this year.

Petterson was the managing director of Life at Sea. He left several months before the voyage was canceled. Its former CEO, Kendra Holmes, recently launched a new three-year cruise venture that hopes to sail in April 2025.

In May 2023, a few weeks after receiving a refund from Life at Sea, the couple reserved a cabin on another residential cruise startup, Victoria Cruises Line . But a month later, they decided to request a refund (which they, among others, have said they're still waiting for ) when they learned about Villa Vie.

Despite setbacks with other ships, Canen and Bodin said they have complete trust in Petterson and Villa Vie.

"Some people maybe think we're naive, but Villa Vie has our support 100%," Bodin said. "We would be kicking ourselves if we didn't take this opportunity and go for it."

A tornado sank a luxury sailing boat off the coast of sicily. here’s what we know.

Sana Noor Haq

Emergency workers in southern Italy are still hunting for at least one person who remains missing after a tornado sank a luxury yacht early Monday – prompting an air and naval operation off the coast of Sicily .

Twenty-two people are thought to have been on the yacht when the tragedy struck. Fifteen people were rescued from the wreckage, according to Italy’s Coast Guard. One body was recovered on Monday and five more were found on Wednesday, after divers struggled to reach deep inside the yacht around 50 meters underwater (approximately 150 feet).

Two Americans and four Britons were among the six initially reported missing – including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a prominent lawyer. The five bodies found Wednesday have not been identified, while the body recovered Monday is thought to be that of the onboard chef Ricardo Thomas.

Here’s what we know.

What happened?

A small waterspout – a type of tornado – spun over the Mediterranean island early Monday, likely capsizing the sailing boat amid lashings of rain and strong thunderstorms.

The British-flagged yacht, called the “Bayesian,” was anchored about a half a mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast. The vessel sank after its mast broke in half in the storm, Salvatore Cocina, head of Sicily’s Civil Protection, told CNN on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses described furious gales and hurricane-like winds that left an avalanche of debris near the pier.

More than a dozen survivors were spotted in the area hanging onto life rafts, according to the captain of a nearby boat, who steadied his ship to avoid colliding with the Bayesian.

“We got this strong hurricane gust and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position,” Karsten Bower told reporters in Palermo on Monday. “After the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone.”

52-year-old Stephen Chamberlain, a former VP of Finance at Lynch’s Autonomy, was struck by a car while out running on Saturday, his lawyer Gary Lincenberg told CNN.

Related article Former co-defendant of British tycoon missing in luxury yacht sinking dies after being struck by car

Bower and his crew rescued four injured people, he said, before calling Italy’s Coast Guard – who later rescued the remaining survivors.

One of those rescued – a child – was airlifted to the children’s hospital in Palermo. Eight people were hospitalized in total, according to the mayor’s office.

The girl’s mother, Charlotte, described how she battled to hold onto Sofia, her 1-year-old daughter, as reported by Italian news agency ANSA.

“In two seconds I lost the baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amidst the fury of the waves. I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy,” she told journalists. “Many were screaming.”

The mother and daughter were later reunited with the father, James, according to a doctor at the local children’s hospital in Palermo.

“The survivors are very tired and are constantly asking about the missing people,” the doctor, Domenico Cipolla, said Monday. “They are talking and crying all the time because they have realized that there is little hope of finding their friends alive.”

Divers jump into the sea to search for six people missing in Sicily, southern Italy, on Monday.

Italy’s fire brigade dispatched helicopters to aid in the search, officials said Monday. After an unsuccessful attempt on Monday, the brigade sent divers to try and enter the sunken ship Tuesday, recommencing the operation on Wednesday.

The depth of the wreck means divers can only work there for limited periods of time, according to Marco Tilotta, an inspector for the diving unit of Palermo’s local fire brigade. The Italian fire brigade said Monday its divers had reached the yacht’s hull 49 meters (160 feet) below sea level.

The United Kingdom’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) said it has deployed a team of four inspectors to Palermo which is conducting a preliminary assessment of the scene.

Who was on board?

Twenty-two people were on board the Bayesian, which was flying under a British flag and had mostly British passengers and crew, in addition to two Anglo-French, one Irish and one Sri Lankan person, a spokesperson for Italy’s Coast Guard told CNN.

A troupe of high-profile guests are among those missing, including Lynch, the 59-year-old British tech investor who fought a fraud case earlier this year in the United States – which spiraled from the disastrous $11 billion sale of his company to tech firm Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011.

His 18-year-old daughter was also named missing. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, survived the accident. Bacares told Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica that she woke up at 4 a.m. local time, as the boat tilted. She and her husband were not initially concerned, she said, but became worried when the windows of the yacht shattered and chaos erupted.

Bacares spoke to the newspaper while sitting in a wheelchair, at a hospital in the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese. She had abrasions on her feet and bandages on other parts of her body, it reported.

Bloomer, the finance tycoon, and Morvillo, a prominent lawyer – and both their wives – are also among the missing, according to Salvatore Cocina, head of Sicily’s Civil Protection.

Morvillo, an American partner at Clifford Chance, was involved in successfully defeating the US fraud case against Lynch in June. Another employee of the firm, Ayla Ronald, and her partner, survived the incident, according to a spokesperson for Clifford Chance.

The body that was recovered from the vessel on Monday was identified as the onboard chef Ricardo Thomas, an Antiguan citizen, Reuters reported.

British tech mogul Mike Lynch, pictured in November 2014, is among the missing.

What do we know about the boat?

Built in 2008, the 56-meter (184-foot) yacht was manufactured by Italian company Perini Navi, Reuters reported. According to the Associated Press, the boat has been available for charter for $215,000 (€195,000) per week.

Lynch’s wife is linked to the yacht. The Bayesian is held by the company Revtom Limited, according to records from the maritime information service Equasis. The company’s latest annual return from April lists Bacares as the proprietor.

“Bayesian,” the name given to the vessel, is linked to the statistical theory on which Lynch built his fortune, according to Reuters.

The yacht’s mast stood 72.27 meters (237 feet) high above the designated water line, just short of the world’s tallest mast which is 75.2 meters, according to Guinness World Records. It was the tallest aluminium mast in the world, the Perini Navi website said.

Perini Navi is known for making “good quality boats,” according to Caroline White, deputy editor of BOAT International, a media group serving the superyacht industry.

White told CNN that if the Bayesian dismasted, “it should theoretically become more stable.” “But it might be a different story if you are in the middle of a violent storm with incredibly strong winds pinning you to the water,” she added.

Dangerous weather conditions

Strong storms across Sicily brought torrential rainfall late Sunday. Initial reports suggest a small  waterspout , which developed over the area Monday morning, could have been behind the yacht’s sinking.

Waterspouts – one of several types of tornadoes – are spinning columns of air that form over water, or move from land out to water. They are often accompanied by  high winds, high seas, hail and dangerous lightning . While they are most common over tropical oceans, they can form almost anywhere.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told CNN that while waterspouts in Sicily are rare, “there is a risk” they can happen – just not every day.

Waterspouts rely on warm waters to gain energy and the Mediterranean Sea has been very hot, reaching a record  daily median of 28.9 degrees Celsius  (84 Fahrenheit) last week, according to preliminary data from researchers at the Institute of Marine Sciences in Spain.

Local temperatures have been even higher, with waters around Sicily reaching almost 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), almost 3 degrees more than normal, Italian climatologist Luca Mercalli told CNN.

“Warmer oceans have more energy and more humidity to transfer to the atmosphere, the most important fuels for storms,” he said.

CNN’s Laura Paddison, Louis Mian, Benjamin Brown, Catherine Nicholls, Sabrina Souza, Niamh Kennedy and Eve Brennan contributed reporting.

Hello World!

Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank. Was it a 'black swan event'?

Portrait of Cybele Mayes-Osterman

The Bayesian set off on a leisurely cruise around Italy's southern coast on a sunny day in late July.

The luxurious super yacht − which boasted one of the largest masts in the world and carried a crew of business moguls, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his family and a chair of Morgan Stanley − set sail from the Amalfi Coast, bound for Sicily.

Less than a month later, the ship had sunk 160 feet under the water , leaving its cook dead and six of its passengers, including at least two Americans, missing and prompting a massive search that has drawn international attention.

Now, experts are trying to piece together why in the early hours Monday the Bayesian was quickly pulled under the waves amid a storm that saw at least one tornado spin up over the water.

Breaking news to start your day smart. Sign up for USA TODAY's Daily Briefing newsletter.

A perfect storm led to Bayesian sinking, experts say

The combination of unlikely factors that could have contributed to the ship's fate constituted a "black swan event," Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told USA TODAY.

The Bayesian was well-built: A 2008 product of Italian ship maker Perini, it was constructed in accordance with international maritime standards and commercially certified by the U.K.'s Maritime and Coastguard Agency, according to Schanck.

The bout of bad weather that swept the area when the ship went down was also out of the ordinary in the northern Mediterranean, "which isn't renowned for prolonged, significant stormy weather," he said.

"The fact that those two elements have then resulted in the foundering of a super yacht is pretty extraordinary," Schanck said. "These things don't happen every day."

After the ship sank just before 5 a.m. local time, 15 people, including a 1-year-old, were pulled from the water. Some were rescued from a life raft by the crew of a ship docked nearby.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook and a native of Antigua, was found dead, according to authorities.

As of Tuesday, six people were missing, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Several missing passengers were involved in Lynch's trial on fraud charges, including Jonathan Bloomer, a Morgan Stanley chair who served as his character witness, and one of Lynch's attorneys. Lynch, accused of fraud after he sold his company to electronics giant Hewlett-Packard, was acquitted of all charges weeks ago.

Who is Mike Lynch? UK entrepreneur among those missing after superyacht sinks off Sicily

Tornado formed over unusually hot water

Storms in the area that night may have whipped up a water spout, a tornado over the water , according to local meteorologists.

It was likely triggered by the water's unusual warmth, said Rick Shema, a certified consulting meteorologist who served in the Navy.

"The water spout was an uncommon occurrence," he said. "But again, these things happen, especially in warmer water."

At 83.7 degrees, water in the area was more than 3 degrees hotter than average on the day the Bayesian sank, likely the result of climate change, Shema said.

"Hurricanes can form at 80 degrees. This was almost four degrees higher than that," he said.

The water spout may have spun up when cooler air dropped from mountainous places nearby onto the hot water, he said. "A water spout is a vortex, basically like a tornado, spinning real fast, sucking up water and moisture as the column rises," he said.

Although water spouts only reach around 120 mph, as compared with tornadoes on land, which can reach up to 300 mph, "you don't need 200 mph to sink a ship," he said.

"Even an average tornado, 120 miles an hour, that's a lot of wind," he said, "which would heel the boat over for sure."

Water spouts spring up suddenly, Shema said. Before they strike, winds can be slow, but "once the water spout comes over, bam, it's on," he said.

Before sunrise, the ship's crew may not have seen the water spout coming. "The visibility was probably a big factor," he said.

With the windows of the yacht opened, as they likely were in the hot weather, the water spout could have triggered water that flooded through the portholes, Shema said, causing the ship to sink.

Tragedy strikes: Scramble to find survivors after Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicily coast

Search continues, but shift to recovery phase approaches

Italian authorities said the Bayesian was probably at anchor when the storm struck, meaning it couldn't maneuver and ride the waves, according to Mitchell Stoller, a captain and maritime expert witness. Other ships in the area that turned on their engines rode out the storm, he said.

"When you're at anchor and you see weather, you start your engine and you put the wind on the bow. You don't let it get on the side," he said.

Schanck said another key question concerns the position of the keel, a heavy weight underneath the boat that acts as a counterbalance to keep it upright, when the ship sank. When lifted, "that's going to affect the stability of the vessel, because, obviously, you've now raised the center of gravity of that vessel," he said.

The Bayesian was floating over 160 feet of water at the time, deep enough that the keel would likely be deployed. But the fact that "the vessel heeled over so heavily makes me question that," Schanck said.

The cause of the disaster may not be known until the ship can be examined in more detail, experts say. Prosecutors in a nearby town have already opened an investigation.

Schanck said investigators will have plenty to work with once the operation moves into a recovery phase.

"The vessel is intact and in good condition on the seabed," he said. "There's a lot of eyewitness accounts from other vessels in the area and the shore."

As the search entered its second day on Tuesday, the rescue effort may shift in that direction soon. "I suspect, later on, today or tomorrow, we'll probably see some mention of a recovery operation being stated," Schanck said.

The decision to would depend on whether rescuers find signs of life in the ship and air pockets or survivable spaces, Schanck said. At this point, survivors on the water's surface looks unlikely. "My professional opinion is that the casualties will be located within the vessel," he said.

"There is a risk versus benefit in all maritime search and rescue incidents," he said. "Where we start transitioning to a recovery phase, that line shifts."
