StarTrek.com

Paramount+, the streaming service from ViacomCBS, today introduced the stellar lineup of voice talent behind the six young alien starship crew members featured in its upcoming all-new animated kids’ series Star Trek: Prodigy . First look images of the series were also revealed.

The new voice cast and their Star Trek: Prodigy characters are as follows:

Star Trek: Prodigy

Rylee Alazraqui (“Doug Unplugs,” “Home Economics”) as “Rok-Tahk,” a Brikar and an unusually bright eight-year-old girl. Rok is a bit shy, but not when it comes to her love for animals. Brett Gray (“On My Block,” “When They See Us”) as “Dal,” 17 years old and an unknown species, he fancies himself a maverick, who even in the toughest times, holds strong onto his unwavering hope. Angus Imrie (“The Crown,” “Emma”) as “Zero,” who is a Medusan: a noncorporeal, genderless, energy-based lifeform. Since others would go mad at the sight of their true self, Zero wears a containment suit they made themselves to protect others. Jason Mantzoukas (“Infinite,” “Big Mouth”) as “Jankom Pog,” a 16-year-old Tellarite. Tellarites are known to relish an argument, and Jankom is no different. Regardless of opinion, he will always play ‘devil’s advocate’ for the sake of hearing all sides. Ella Purnell (“Army of the Dead,” “Sweetbitter”) as “Gwyn,” a 17-year-old Vau N’Akat who was raised on her father’s bleak mining planet and grew up dreaming to explore the stars. Dee Bradley Baker (“SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Dora the Explorer”) as “Murf,” whose age and species is unknown but who is an endearing, indestructible blob with curiously good timing and an insatiable appetite for ship parts.

This new voice cast joins actress Kate Mulgrew (“Star Trek: Voyager”) who is reprising her iconic role as Kathryn Janeway. In the series, Janeway will serve as the Star Trek: Prodigy starship’s built-in emergency training hologram.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Produced by the Nickelodeon Animation Studio and CBS Studios, Star Trek: Prodigy will premiere on Paramount+ in the U.S. later this year.

These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.

Star Trek: Prodigy is from CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Studios’ new animation arm; Nickelodeon Animation Studio, led by President of Animation, Ramsey Naito; Secret Hideout; and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Katie Krentz, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth serve as executive producers alongside co-showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman. Star Trek: Prodigy Reveals Full Voice Cast, New Character Images

By Jake Abbate

The return of Kate Mulgrew as Kathryn Janeway has a lot of Paramount Plus subscribers excited for Star Trek: Prodigy . But the former Star Trek: Voyager star is only playing a background role on the new animated series while six new heroes take center stage instead. Now, we finally know which performers are bringing these cosmic adventurers to life. Via BleedingCool , Paramount+ has announced the full voice cast for the new show alongside new images and breakdowns of their respective characters.

Gwyn (Ella Purnell)

star trek prodigy behind the voice actors

Seventeen-year-old Gwyn belongs to a species of alien known as the Vau N’Akat. She grew up on her dad’s “bleak” mining planet, even though she’s always longed to see more of the universe. Purnell recently starred in Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead and previously headlined Starz’s Sweetbitter , which aired two seasons from 2018 to 2019. She also had a role in Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children in 2016.

Dal (Brett Gray)

star trek prodigy behind the voice actors

Dal’s species is unknown. But like Gwyn, he’s 17 years old and also dreams of a better future. He stands out thanks to his “unwavering hope,” which should come in handy even in the toughest situations. Gray recently had roles on When They See Us and On My Block , both of which streamed on Netflix.

Murf (Dee Bradley Baker)

star trek prodigy behind the voice actors

Murf is an “indestructible blob” known for his “curiously” good timing. It’s not clear how old he is in relation to the other members of the group. However, he apparently has an “insatiable appetite for ship parts,” but it’s hard to imagine how useful this will be. Baker is a voice acting legend with literally hundreds of credits to his name. He currently provides the voice of the Clone Troopers on Star Wars: The Bad Batch on Disney+

The cast also includes Angus Imrie as Zero, who belongs to a “noncorporeal, genderless, energy-based” species of lifeforms known as Medusans. Zero wears a containment suit to protect their shipmates from harm. Jason Mantzoukas has also joined the series as a 16-year-old, argumentative Tellarite named Jankom Pog. Finally, Rylee Alazraqui will voice Rok-Tahk, an eight-year-old Brikar who is shy, smart, and has a special place in her heart for animals.

Star Trek: Prodigy will debut on Paramount+ later this year.

So far. I have liked all of the CBS AA/Paramount + Star Trek shows. I wonder if Jerri Ryan will pop up?

Why would she?

Awww, happy Brett has a post On My Block gig already! I think he’ll really have a talent for voice acting too, so this is perfect for him.

I’m definitely looking forward to this, but a couple of the characters look like they transported themselves from the Star Wars universe.

  • Brett Gray as Dal , 17 years old and an unknown species, he fancies himself a maverick, who even in the toughest times, holds strong onto his unwavering hope.
  • Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog , a 16-year-old Tellarite. Tellarites are known to relish an argument, and Jankom is no different. Regardless of opinion, he will always play ‘devil’s advocate’ for the sake of hearing all sides.
  • Dee Bradley Baker as Murf , whose age and species is unknown but who is an endearing, indestructible blob with curiously good timing and an insatiable appetite for ship parts.
  • Angus Imrie as Zero , who is a Medusan: a noncorporeal, genderless, energy-based lifeform. Since others would go mad at the sight of their true self, Zero wears a containment suit they made themselves to protect others.
  • Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk , a Brikar and an unusually bright eight-year-old girl. Rok is a bit shy, but not when it comes to her love for animals.

Paramount+ has also released first look photos of Dal, Gwyn, and Rok-Tahk, which you can see below:

  • Legacy characters like Wesley Crusher return, adding depth and nostalgia to the young crew's journey.
  • Fans can expect deeply satisfying storytelling, emotional growth, and stunning animation in this revolutionary series.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 fulfills the animated series' mission of bringing Star Trek to a new, younger audience. Led by Kate Mulgrew, Brett Gray, and executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman, all 20 Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 episodes premiered on Netflix on July 1st and boast a 100% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.

In Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, the young Starfleet hopefuls of the USS Protostar launch into an adventure that touches every aspect of Star Trek 's vast canon and multiverse . Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 brings the time travel saga of the USS Protostar full circle. Here's what happened and what it all means for season 3.

Screen Rant had the pleasure of chatting with Kate Mulgrew, Brett Gray, Kevin Hageman, and Dan Hageman at San Diego Comic-Con about all aspects of Star Trek: Prodigy , and why season 2 is so deeply satisfying.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 Is One Of The Best Seasons Of Star Trek Ever Produced

Screen Rant: Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 is streaming now on Netflix. All 20 episodes dropped on July 1. Everyone should see it. I've already seen the whole thing three times.

Kate Mulgrew: Have you really? What do you think?

Screen Rant: It is, honestly, one of the best seasons of Star Trek I have ever seen. That is also the consensus. I've sure you've seen the love online. Please, all of you, tell me how you feel about the love and the validation. Especially after everything it took to get it on Netflix.

Kate Mulgrew: Well, we're feeling that. So it should go forward, right? That would be the supposition. Netflix has grabbed it, thankfully, Now we're waiting to see if it will have a future. Which it must have. Because not only deservedly so, but wouldn't it be a terrific loss if it didn't? You said it was some of the best Star Trek television you've seen. So, tell us why?

Screen Rant: Well, first of all, it not only evoked the vast canon of Star Trek and did it in a way that was very respectful but also forward-looking, but it also told an amazing story of growth, and change, and heroism. It was emotionally satisfying. It was beautifully rendered and animated. So I could go on, but this is not about me.

Dan Hageman: The music, too. Nami [Melumad]'s score.

Screen Rant; Yes, Nami's score.

Kate Mulgrew: Deeply satisfying. That's a wonderful way to put it.

The Hagemeans Share How They Brought Star Trek: Prodigy To Netflix

"we were paused at the moment right before chakotay and janeway got together.".

Kevin Hageman: And let me just say, imagine we were in the middle of season 2. The show... we were given a call that it was just gonna stop. There'd be no more, it would never get released. So going from that point to all of a sudden, the fans, the plane flying over Netflix, the support, the love, being able to finish it. And we're like sitting behind the scenes making this thing going, 'This needs to be seen. What if this just gets erased?' Dan Hageman: I also think we were stopped... we were paused at the moment right before Chakotay and Janeway got together. So I like to believe that this cosmic energy of Janeway and Chakotay... Kevin Hageman: Shippers... Dan Hageman: Brought ti together, finished the show, and brought it to the screen on Netflix. Kate Mulgrew: I said, let's talk about sex. Are we're talking about it.

Screen Rant: Whoa.

Kevin Hageman: It's getting hot in here, Kate.

How Kate Mulgrew Joined Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1

The actor said, "you'll have to give me a minute with this.".

Screen Rant: I'd like to go back a few years, actually.

Kate Mulgrew: Let's go way back! (laughs)

Screen Rant: Out of the blue a few years ago, you get a call from these two gentlemen and they ask you to bring back Janeway, play Janeway again in a cartoon. Tell me how you felt about that?

Kate Mulgrew: I didn't get a call from these guys. Regrettably. I would've loved that. But I did get a call from Alex Kurtzman, who as you know holds mantle, and he said, 'What would you feel about voicing the return of Janeway in an animated series called Prodigy?' And I actually said I was a little... on my back foot about it, because I said, "You'll have to give me a minute with this." You know, playing Janeway in Voyager, was life-changing for me. Huge. And she has resonated. She has never for one second diminished in my imagination or in my practical life. So the thought of doing this now, a cartoon, I thought, I don't know. Is this the right step? Will this be good? And then he gave me the story, and I talked to some of my friends who were very much in the know, and they said, 'You're out of your mind.' To be able to bring this to [the] young, to children, and to carry it on trans-generationally. What an opportunity. And then I met the Hagemans and I fell in love. And then I met this dingle dangle. Brett Gray: (laughs) Hey, that's me. Kate Mulgrew: And I'm so glad I did. It's been, to use your words, deeply satisfying—the entire journey.

Screen Rant: Well, we're all grateful that you did. We're all so grateful.

Kate Mulgrew and Brett Gray Playing Admiral Janeway and Dal Switching Bodies

Screen Rant; I'm glad Brett and you are both here together. Ever since season 1, I've been dying to ask you about the episode when you guys switched bodies and played each other. Please tell me about playing Brett, and Brett playing Kate.

Brett Gray: That was awesome. Kate Mulgrew: That was fun, wasn't it? Brett Gray: I was so scared. Kate Mulgrew: Linguistically, it was challenging. Brett Gray: Lingo. Lingally. Kate Mulgrew: I had to learn how you spoke. Brett Gray: Same. Kate Mulgrew: Right? Brett Gray: Yeah. Kate Mulgrew: That must have been hard. (laughs) Brett Gray: It was deeply satisfying. Kate Mulgrew: But you did, guys. You were good. You were kind. In the booth, you kept saying, 'Why don't we do that again? Let's just try that again.' Brett Gray: And I will say I totally tried to really throw you for a loop. I was going for it, really. I was like, oh, if Kate is gonna have to do Dal, I'm gonna give the most Dal, because I just wanted to hear you do it. (laughs) Dan Hageman: When we recorded their lines, we had them record their lines so the other one could hear how they said the lines.

Screen Rant: Was there ever a point for either of you where you're like, 'You're going too far'?

Brett Gray: No, I was ready. I was so excited to do it. Because it's such a mind--- Kate Mulgrew: Fantastic idea, right? Brett Gray: I was like, so I'm playing myself in the Admiral's body with the Admiral's voice, but I'm Dal? I was such a-- I was like, wait, what's going on? How do I even do that? Kate Mulgrew: Star Trek at its best. Brett Gray: Yeah, totally. Kate Mulgrew: I dug that. That was really fun. And you know what it means to say 'I dug that?' Or is that old school. Brett Gray: I do. I mean, we say dug. Kate Mulgrew: Is that antique? Kevin Hageman: She's not actually digging anything. Brett Gray: We say... Kate Mulgrew: What do you say? Dan Hageman: Cap. Brett Gray: Oh, we definitely say cap. Cap is like when you think I'm lying. Dan Hageman: Cap is a lie. I'm thinking bet. Brett Gray: Oh bet. Yeah, bet too. Dan Hageman: My bad. My bad. Kate Mulgrew: Now wait a minute. I just said I dug it. And you're giving me what you would say. Your generation. Brett Gray: We don't say dug, but we understand. Kate Mulgrew: I think you should just say excuse me. Brett Gray: Yeah, that's cool. That's dope. Kevin Hageman: Don't they deserve... We think they should have some live-action buddy cop show. They're paired up together, and just comedy ensues. Kate Mulgrew: Buddy cops? Cops? Brett Gray: Not cops. We've seen that a lot, right? Kate Mulgrew: Yeah, too many cops. Too many cops. Too many robbers. What are we gonna be? Brett Gray: I feel like, I don't know. It has to be something that no one would ever even think about. Like, it has to be the weirdest way we would even know each other. Kate Mulgrew: Killers. Brett Gray: Do it. Let's do it.

Would Janeway Adopt Dal? Inquiring Minds Want To Know.

Screen Rant: That's so funny because I was gonna ask if Janeway could adopt any of the Protostar kids so they could live in your farmhouse, why would it be Dal? And it turns out, here it is.

Kate Mulgrew: In my farmhouse?

Screen Rant: Yeah, when Janeway retires at the end, she moves into a farmhouse, briefly.

Kate Mulgrew: I don't know about Dal on a farm. Brett Gray: I don't know if I'd wanna do that either. Kate Mulgrew: With the little cows and the little sheep. You might get lost. Brett Gray: There is that one episode where Holo Janeway has us doing the team-building exercise. And we're chasing the chicken and trying to get it. So I just don't think that would go well. (laughs)

Kate Mulgrew On Janeway & Chakotay In Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2

Screen Rant: Kate, I've got to ask you about Janeway and Chakotay . I love their reunion and the portrayal of their relationship in season 2. There are JC fans who have waited for them to be a couple forever.

Kate Mulgrew: Why? I'm asking you because you know your stuff, and everybody told me you know your stuff. Why?

Screen Rant: Okay. Because they are two people who were thrown into an incredibly unique situation, and they brought out the best in each other. And together, they shepherded, what was it? 200-300 people back home over seven years.

Kate Mulgrew: 165 complement.

Screen Rant: Thank you. Thank you, Admiral.

Kate Mulgrew: He was the Maquis. He was my enemy. And you wanted us to become not just friends -- lovers.

Screen Rant: Not me. Everyone.

Kate Mulgrew: But why?

Screen Rant: Because you deserve it.

Kate Mulgrew: I deserve what?

Screen Rant: Janeway deserves romance. She deserves a happy life outside of...

Kate Mulgrew: Okay. I'm lost in the Delta Quadrant 'cause I skipped the gas station, with 165 people, right? 175,000 light years from home. And I'm gonna say, "Chakotay, in my ready room. You know what I'm talking about.' As the first female Captain? No no, Nanette. Big big mistake. Don't you think? I was still of childbearing years. You know what that means.

Screen Rant: But now.

Kate Mulgrew: But now what? Now, I'm not. (laughs) Yes, now I'm not.

Screen Rant: But now, Admiral Janeway and Captain Chakotay, reunited in season 2.

Kate Mulgrew: In an animated series. (laughs) We could reunite. What do you think, guys? Dan Hageman: We can't ever answer that. That has to be a thing. We saw Moonlighing. Kate Mulgrew: Here's what I think. I think tension is the word. Always maintain the tension, Will they or won't they? Brett Gray: Or have they already? Kate Mulgrew: Only their hairdresser knows for sure.

Brett Gray Gets Into Gwyn & Dal's Relationship

Screen Rant: Brett, I also really like Dal and Gwyn's relationship. Let's talk about that.

Brett Gray: Same. Yeah, I'm rooting for that. I hope that happens. I think that they would be great together. And I think that for both of them to experience love in this way, with such opposite upbringings and lifestyles, for them to have come together in this way, I think that it would bring out the best in both of them. Kate Mulgrew: But then, where do you go? Where do you go, really, with that idea? How long could that be sustained? Brett Gray: Well, I think that... Dan Hageman: That's our problem. Brett Gray: That's for you guys. (laughs)

Screen Rant: It's a good problem to have.

Kate Mulgrew On Star Trek: Prodigy's Mirror Universe Episode

Screen Rant: I personally love the Mirror Universe, and the Mirror Universe episode that's going to be screened at your panel. Kate, you got to play evil Mirror Janeway. Tell me about that.

Kate Mulgrew: Heaven! Bliss. Because Janeway's very good, right? She's eminently decent. Courageous woman. I mean, she's got her flaws, but she's a fine person. To be able to flip that, as an actor, is sheer pleasure. Especially in a booth where you can get away with murder, and have done many times. (laughs) And they're going, 'Yeah! More murder!' Yeah, really satisfying to do that.

Screen Rant: Deeply satisfying.

Kate Mulgrew: Because, of course, it resides within me, doesn't it?

Screen Rant: I think we're seeing some of it now.

Wesley Crusher's Comeback In Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2

Screen Rant: Another home run in season 2 was Wesley Crusher. Wil Wheaton coming back, which was just fantastic. And the best version of Wesley we've ever seen in Star Trek . Plus as a side benefit, we got the first meeting ever of Admiral Janeway and Dr. Beverly Crusher , his mom. Let's talk about that because this is all Star Trek history being made by your show.

Kevin Hageman: Oh, it's a joy. I mean, we had a writer, Jen Muro, in our room, and when she grew up, she had a Wesley Crusher poster on her wall. She had the biggest crush on him. And she brought up in the room, what if we brought him back? Dan Hageman: She had also become friends with Wil by that time. And she is one of his greatest fans. Kevin Hageman: But he is the original prodigy kid of Trek. Kate Mulgrew: He is. That's right. Kevin Hageman: He is. And he disappears, sort of, in TNG. And you're kind of left with this great grand mystery of who he is. I imagine a lot of writers might have been scared to touch that character, 'cause he's like this Time Lord. What are the rules there? What can he do? Is he too powerful? And we just had a blast in the room cleverly using him, bringing him back, finding what the next chapter of Wesley Crusher is. Dan Hageman: We love the idea of a Time Lord who didn't have time to see his mother. That's where it is. Kevin Hageman: It's so resonant, so emotionally... Kate Mulgrew: Story of every mother and son, isn't it?

The Team Reveals Their Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3 Hopes

Screen Rant: I've got to ask you all what we're all waiting to hear about, which is Star Trek: Prodigy season 3 ? Do you know anything? Can you tell us anything? Besides that we all want it?

Dan Hageman: Kate, go ahead. Unleash Kate. Kate Mulgrew: We are fully expecting it. And to many thereafter. It's superb animated television. I don't think there's anything that can compare to it on TV. And the fact that - we're not waiting - but I think that this period needs to come to an end, and it needs to be picked up.

Screen Rant: Kevin and Dan, is this a case where you can't begin any work on season 3 until you know, or do you have like a bunch of ideas that are just sitting there waiting to go?

Kevin Hageman: Oh, we've got a lot of ideas. I think the hardest part, and this is just the state of television today, is our production. Everyone's gone. They've been gone for about a year now. So we hope that there is a new season, but it's almost like starting from scratch. Dan Hageman: They're ready to run back, though. We've got a great crew, and we're all... Kate Mulgrew: Will they come back? Kevin Hageman: Oh yes. Kate Mulgrew: Can you reclaim them? Aren't they off to other things? Kevin Hageman: They're off, but they loved working with everyone on our show. They love this show. We love the response that it's getting from people. Kate Mulgrew: You see what it does? It inspires loyalty. Fierce loyalty. On every level. Kevin Hageman: We use love, not fear, in our productions. It seems to be working.

'Star Trek: Prodigy' is the 'Voyager' spin-off you never knew you wanted — and we love it

And you thought it was just a kids' show… Why "Prodigy" is the perfect continuation of Captain Janeway's story.

The crew of the Protostar in Star Trek: Prodigy

Of all the TV Treks to date, " Star Trek: Voyager " is the one with the most definitive ending. From day one, the show was on a mission to get Captain Janeway and her lost-in-space crew back from the distant Delta Quadrant. Once that objective was achieved in series finale "Endgame", however, there wasn't much left on the ledger labelled "unfinished business". The series certainly wasn't calling out for a follow-up, but two decades later it's got one — and it's great.

Okay, " Star Trek: Prodigy " isn't technically the eighth season of "Voyager", but it's undeniably the '90s show's spiritual heir. Unlike "Picard", which used its third season to deliver the perfect send-off for the "Next Generation" crew, "Prodigy" substitutes wall-to-wall nostalgia for youthful exuberance, to tell the story of a bunch of kids who stumble on a grounded Starfleet vessel in the Delta Quadrant.

They're a likeable group seemingly focus-grouped to look good on a lunchbox. Indeed, on many levels, "Prodigy" is the quintessential Nickelodeon animation, working through a playbook that's been serving Saturday morning cartoons since the '80s. A gang of mismatched heroes with plenty to learn? Hat tip to "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". Characters trapped in an unfamiliar and hostile alien location? Thank you, "ThunderCats". A cute, wise and indecipherable sidekick? That'll be Brain in "Inspector Gadget". They've even brought the obligatory mentor along for the ride.

The crew of the USS Protostar in Star Trek: Prodigy

But while it would undoubtedly have been easier to set a fun, kid-friendly cartoon in a loose facsimile of the "Star Trek" universe, "Prodigy" goes all in and embraces the franchise's history with the same reverence "The Clone Wars" and "Rebels" had for the "Star Wars" movies . That aforementioned mentor is an Emergency Training Hologram based on a certain Captain Kathryn Janeway (voiced by original actor Kate Mulgrew ), and she ties the voyages of the USS Protostar to nearly six decades of "Trek" storytelling — while helping her protegés to learn the ropes, and shape the future of the universe.

The show is ingeniously structured, drip-feeding the " Star Trek " references to keep older viewers interested without alienating new recruits. Like most of the show's younger viewers, the rag-tag crew of the Protostar (each one an extra-terrestrial) have no knowledge of Kirk, Spock and the rest of the Federation. But with Janeway as their guide, their close encounters with Tribbles, the Borg and even the Kazon (Klingon-esque antagonists so lame that "Voyager" quickly left them behind) provide a gateway to "Trek"'s wider universe, plotting a course for the real story to get started.

"Prodigy" may be targeted at kids, but it's hard to imagine how any show could more embody the values of "Star Trek". As in "Voyager", the crew of the Protostar are charting a course through an unknown region of space, working as a team to science their way past the obstacles they encounter, while formulating theories that (almost) sound plausible.

Catherine Janeway and Chakotay in Star Trek: Prodigy

As with all the best Starfleet crews, the chemistry is fantastic, all the way from conventionally cocky Dal R'El, to malleable Mellanoid slime worm Murf, and — perhaps best of all — Zero, a telepathic, non-corporeal Medusan. Their species first appeared in "Star Trek: Original Series" episode "Is There in Truth no Beauty", and they have to keep their true form hidden in a robot suit to avoid driving shipmates mad. (Just as "Voyager" did with the entirely CG Species 8472, "Prodigy" relishes the fact its alien lifeforms aren't limited by what's feasible for human actors in prosthetics.)

The production also features none of the "it'll do…" mindset you'd once have expected from a kid-oriented spin-off. The theme is by top Hollywood composer Michael Giacchino (whose previous credits include "Rogue One", "The Batman", JJ Abrams first "Star Trek"), while the voice cast is packed with top talent like John Noble ("Fringe"), Daveed Diggs ("Snowpiercer") and Jameela Jamil ("The Good Place"). The space battles are pretty spectacular, too.

And for anyone expecting a dumbed down plot, "Prodigy"'s second season shoots preconceptions down faster than you can say "Temporal Mechanics 101". The foundations of season two were laid in season one, when the real Janeway (now a Vice Admiral, as revealed in " Star Trek: Nemesis ") learned that an experimental starship called the USS Protostar — under the command of her former first officer, Chakotay — had been located on a planetoid called Tars Lamora, and was now under the control of a bunch of fugitive kids.

The USS Protostar from Star Trek: Prodigy

Without venturing too far into spoiler territory, what follows is a complex and sophisticated story involving time loops, a first contact scenario gone horribly wrong, and an antagonist with a serious (and, arguably, understandable) grudge against Starfleet. It has monsters (known as the Loom) who can erase their victims from history, and a brief excursion to the Mirror Universe — where, yes, goatee beards are still a surefire giveaway that you're talking to a villain. It also features some refreshingly familiar voices (Robert Beltran as Chakotay, Robert Picardo as the Doctor, Ronny Cox as Admiral Jellico ), and a pivotal role for a former boy wonder who quit Starfleet to play at being Doctor Who.

If "Prodigy" is not quite "Voyager" season 8, it's definitely season 7.2, a passing of the torch to the next, next generation. This show was never about Janeway, Chakotay or the Doctor but its wonderful, cynicism-free celebration of "Star Trek" could never have worked without them.

As this era of Starfleet deals with synth uprisings and the evacuation of Romulus — events destined to leave lasting scars on Jean-Luc Picard and the Federation — it's good to know the crew of the Prodigy are still out there, somewhere in the cosmos. There's no question they deserve a third season to see what strange new worlds they might find.

Richard's love affair with outer space started when he saw the original "Star Wars" on TV aged four, and he spent much of the ’90s watching "Star Trek”, "Babylon 5” and “The X-Files" with his mum. After studying physics at university, he became a journalist, swapped science fact for science fiction, and hit the jackpot when he joined the team at SFX, the UK's biggest sci-fi and fantasy magazine. He liked it so much he stayed there for 12 years, four of them as editor.

He's since gone freelance and passes his time writing about "Star Wars", "Star Trek" and superheroes for the likes of SFX, Total Film, TechRadar and GamesRadar+. He has met five Doctors, two Starfleet captains and one Luke Skywalker, and once sat in the cockpit of "Red Dwarf"'s Starbug.

“Brink”

After their successful battle against Asencia’s ( Jameela Jamil ) Rev-1, Voyager and Protostar arrive at Solum, per Starfleet’s orders, to thwart a possible all-out war between the Federation and the newly militarized Vau N’Akat and their inexplicable time-space weaponry.

While Admiral Janeway ( Kate Mulgrew ) can’t send away teams to the surface to gather intel, as Starfleet has ordered her to simply stay near the planet for now, the sneaky admiral determines sending a non-Starfleet crew to scout for intelligence is a sensible idea. So, Gwyn ( Ella Purnell ), the person who knows the planet best, is charged with leading her away team to gather what useful knowledge they can about Solum’s weapons. Gwyn just has one suggestion: the away team also rescues her father, Ilthuran ( John Noble ). Janeway agrees it’s a sensible idea if they want to prevent an all-out civil war on Solum.

This away mission is an important one for the dynamics of our young crew. Whereas Dal ( Brett Gray ) has always been the de facto leader, Janeway asserts it’s Gwyn who should lead this time, and Dal, to his credit, agrees without issue. Helping the away team complete their mission is a personal cloaking shield recently created by Rak-Tahk ( Rylee Alazraqui ) and Voyager ’s engineering department. This shield, while far from a perfect illusion, should hide the away team as they travel the streets of Solum.

star trek prodigy behind the voice actors

Our first critique about this episode comes from this cloaking shield, which serves a critical service to this episode’s narrative. The illusion of invisibility is so far from perfect, we can’t imagine anyone could overlook the away team if they were even in the middle distance. Light shimmers and refracts off the cloak in an obvious way; we aren’t sure if that effect is just for the audience, or if that’s how characters see the team. If the latter, we don’t know how anyone on the streets of Solum can ignore the away team, and if the former, the audience would surely be smart enough to know when they were looking at our cloaked protagonists even with a perfect illusion of invisibility.

Landing on Solum, the away team, which consists of Gwyn, Dal, Rok-Tahk, Jankom Pog ( Jason Mantzoukas ), Zero ( Angus Imrie ), Murf ( Dee Bradley Baker ), and Maj’el ( Michaela Dietz ), who effectively resigned from Nova Squadron to come with the group, start by following the source of a transmission apparently from the Vau N’Akat resistance: Ilthuran’s workshop. Upon getting to the ransacked workshop, the crew finds an unexpected but all-too-familiar face: Asencia, but it’s her younger self, not the older one who is now in control of Solum.

“There’s two of her? Gah, of course there’s two of her. I hate time travel.” – Dal upon seeing the younger Asencia.

This Asencia has joined the resistance, those fighting her older self’s martial rule; Gwyn’s father is among the resistance, too, but he has been captured. Upon asking how Old Asencia harnessed temporal powers to create fleets of ships, Young Asencia tells the group Wesley Crusher ( Wil Wheaton ) is in Asencia’s grasp. The away team’s mission just became a bit more complicated: should they rescue Wesley, rescue Ilthuran, or both?

star trek prodigy behind the voice actors

It’s Gwyn’s call, and on the surface, we think it should be an easy one. Wesley is the key to saving the timeline and preventing the Loom from temporally eliminating everything. Despite how important Ilthuran may be to Gwyn and Solum, Welsey is the more important player here. But, a daughter’s love for her not-yet father wins out, and Gwyn risks dividing the away team; Gwyn, Murf, Rok, and Zero are going to save Wesley, while Dal, Jankom, Maj’el, and Asencia are going after Ilthuran. While we respect the crew’s recognition of Gwyn’s leadership, how could anyone, including the logical Maj’el, not challenge Gwyn’s decision to split the team to rescue her father?

The half who rescue Wesley do succeed in their mission mostly thanks to the incompetence of guards in and around the building where the Traveler is being held. Wesley is happy to see the group, not realizing quite yet that not all the Protostar crew are there with him. He asserts to his saviors that he planned to be captured so Asencia could create the wormhole technology the Protostar crew would then need to get their ship back to Tars Lamora. It’s a bit of a convoluted and risky plan, especially since the battle with the Rev-1 could have easily gone another way, but the important thing now is escaping Solum with Wesley – not so easy considering the Traveler is severely weakened thanks to his self-imposed torture from Asencia.

After escaping Asencia’s headquarters without issue, Wesley finally notices half of the group is not present, and this isn’t a good thing. The Traveler didn’t plan on only half of the crew being together; he needed all of them for the correct destiny to play out. As it stands now, they are on the wrong path, something that panics the seasoned Traveler.

The missing crew mates do turn up in short order, but only because they’ve been captured by Asencia’s forces after rescuing Ilthuran – not that we see how they are captured. With the party at the mercy of their enemy, Gwyn makes another hard call, but this one is the correct one: she uses the one-use emergency transporter taken from Voyager to beam Wesley and Ilthuran to the ship. This leaves our young protagonists stuck on Solum, but at least they are together, as Wesley wanted.

Taken together, this episode of Star Trek: Prodigy tries to balance the tension between personal loyalty and the larger stakes of the inter-timeline conflict. Gwyn’s leadership and the difficult choices she makes underscore her growth as a character, while the divided away team’s missions add welcomed complexity to the narrative. However, we think the plot is somewhat hindered by an implausible cloaking shield, which strains credibility in an otherwise engaging storyline. Despite these minor qualms, this episode effectively raises the stakes for the young crew, leaving them in a precarious situation that sets the stage for even more dramatic developments in the three remaining episodes.

Stray Thoughts:

  • It’s hard to believe Voyager can be within easy eyesight of Solum and transporter range but still be undetectable to the enemy ships in orbit or ground-based observatories.
  • Did the away team wait until they were in the middle of the city before activating the cloaking field?
  • While rescuing Wesley, Zero mentions they have trouble sensing Vau N’Akat… and no way isn’t going to play a role before the end of this season, right?
  • When Gwyn looks at Dal and says, “Sometimes, you make the hard call,” why did Dal assume she was asking him to throw Wesley the transporter? And how did Wesley know to grab the device that was flying past his face? Seems like a bit of a leap in logic.

“Touch of Grey”

“Touch of Grey” begins immediately where “Brink” left off, with Wesley and Ilthuran beaming aboard Voyager as the young crew below is at Asencia’s mercy.

However, we are first treated to an important scene that happens just before the two men arrive on Voyager . In her ready room, Admiral Janeway ponders the challenges she has faced as captain of first Voyager and then Voyager-A. Indeed, the seasoned officer is wondering if early retirement wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Honestly, who can blame her? The mental and emotional strain of dealing with the challenges she has faced understandably has taken a toll, and now a group of kids is depending on her for rescue. Whereas we never thought much of Janeway’s future in Starfleet before, this scene in “Touch of Grey” suddenly brings this issue to the forefront.

“This isn’t your first rodeo. You, of all people, know it takes time and patience.” “You’ve been away too long. Have you forgotten I’m not a fan of either?” – Janeway and Chakotay.

With Wesley and Ilthuran on Voyager , Janeway plays catch up about what’s happening on the surface, including Wesley’s plan to allow Asencia to capture him and invent time travel technology needed to allow the Protostar to return to Tars Lamora. Importantly, the Doctor ( Robert Picardo ) informs Wesley his all-powerful Traveler abilities are disabled for now due to the shock he endured at Asencia’s hands – which, in our opinion, is an all-too-convenient way to rationalize away Wesley’s abilities to easily rescue the crew.

star trek prodigy behind the voice actors

Down on Solum, the fear-mongering Asencia asserts to the general public that she has captured alien spies who were intent on disrupting Solum, and she issues an ultimatum to Janeway: come down to the surface, or else. Janeway, knowing Asencia is likely springing a trap for the Federation, elects to go rescue her crew anyway. Of course, Asencia just can’t shoot Gwyn’s away team and be done with it; instead, she leaves the group at the mercy of a savage trapped Loom. It’s a terrifying situation, but all they need to do is dodge the creature long enough for the admiral to affect a rescue. At least the Loom has a restraining collar on it so it can’t slow down time.

The kids’ rescue comes in the form of an away team consisting of Wesley Crusher, Janeway, Chakotay ( Robert Beltran ), and the Doctor, all of whom are a bit out of practice when it comes to away missions; Ilthuran is left on Voyager to ensure he survives to eventually reunite a fractured Solum. Heading down to the planet in a replicated Vau N’Akat shuttle, the team takes a page from Return of the Jedi and waltzes right by enemy ships in orbit to make their way close to the dome where the youngsters are fighting for their lives. While the Doctor pretending to be a Drednok is amusing, we must question how good Vau N’Akat security is to let the away team’s shuttle down to Solum considering all the red flags the Doctor produced.

Janeway’s away team reaches the dome but finds it heavily guarded and the youngsters under attack. It’s time for a desperate play, so Janeway orders Chakotay and Wesley to find a weak spot in the structure’s defenses while she uses the Doctor to fool Asencia into thinking the admiral herself is giving herself up. Kudos to Prodigy ’s writers – leaning into the Doctor’s penchant for drama was an effective way for this episode to reveal the ole’ holographic switcheroo, although we must ask why didn’t that reveal come before we see the real Janeway approach her away team?

While Asencia is distracted, Zero contacts Admiral Janeway telepathically to tell her the Loom is just as much of a prisoner in the dome as the young crew. Janeway figures they can use this fact to their advantage, and quickly blows a hole in the dome to affect a chaotic rescue. Asencia starts to have an even worse day when she realizes not only that the Protostar crew has escaped her capture, but the Loom formerly at her beck and call is also loose, sans restraining collar. Moreover, she receives word that the resistance against her rule, led by Ilthuran, is rebelling, so how she deals with both the Federation and Solum uprising will be a key element of the season finale.

star trek prodigy behind the voice actors

The final piece of this rescue plan is Wesley remotely guiding their replicated ship to pick up the away team, and not a moment too soon, as Vau N’Akat guards were closing in. Safely in orbit, Janeway reassures Gwyn and her crew that Solum’s nascent civil war will be averted, and the Protostar will be returned to its proper place, no matter the cost. Bring on the season finale.

“Touch of Grey” aptly sets the stakes for the two-part season closer, as we learn Solum is devolving into civil war as the chance for the Protostar ’s safe return is growing narrower and narrower. We appreciated this episode for its surprising hint of what’s to come for Janeway – that is, a well-earned early retirement, should the admiral choose to do so. We wouldn’t mind that being a happy ending for her, anyway.

Our major lingering questions about this season of Prodigy have to do with Gwyn’s supposed assumption of Protostar captaincy, and what that means for Dal, the one who historically has sat in the center chair. Will Gwyn willingly become captain – not a far-fetched idea, considering the command presence we’ve seen her exhibit, including on the away mission to Solum? Will Chakotay continue to serve with the young crew, since after all the Protostar was his ship? In any case, the finale will have a high bar to clear after the amazing season one ender .

  • Janeway asserts to Wesley that he should talk to his mother, which leaves the door open for another Gates McFadden cameo before the season is over.
  • Did Janeway really split up her landing party without telling Chakotay and Wesley her plan to use the Doctor as a decoy?
  • Why did Asencia taunt Janeway by saying, “You’ve come a long way from Earth” when Asencia just saw Janeway in the battle with the Rev-1?
  • Asencia asserts both she and Janeway know “ Voyager without your command is like a fire snake without a head,” to which Janeway has no retort. Are we meant to believe Janeway believes her crew is ineffective without her?
  • Why did the explosion Janeway caused by breaching the dome disable the Loom’s collar and associated technology?
  • Did Asencia not think to hail the orbiting Vau N’Akat ships and order them to stop the rogue shuttle from leaving the planet?

‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Fans Take To The Skies Again With Message For Netflix To Renew The Series

star trek prodigy behind the voice actors

| August 24, 2024 | By: Anthony Pascale 34 comments so far

Since the July release of the second season of  Star Trek: Prodigy  on Netflix, there has been no word on if there will be a follow-up season of the animated series. Hoping to nudge the streaming giant, fans have once again chosen a high-profile way to get their message out by flying a banner above Netflix’s offices in Hollywood.

Prodigy flies again

Prodigy fans have been rallying around online efforts to watch (and rewatch) the show on Netflix, likely the most important metric for the streaming company. But some are looking at last year’s #SaveStarTrekProdigy campaign for inspiration to help things along. After Paramount Plus removed the the animated series last summer, fans rallied online and in the skies above Los Angeles , hiring a banner advertising plane to fly over the offices of several steaming services, including Netflix in Hollywood, in hopes to get them to pick up the series, which had an almost-completed second season.

Last year’s effort has been mentioned by the showrunners and producers of the show, who say the overall fan campaign played a part in helping get Netflix to pick up the series. At the Prodigy panel at San Diego Comic-Con last month, series star Kate Mulgrew said to the fans, “You guys are responsible for season 2 because you hired that little plane that flew over Netflix and that got bought… So you have to do it again. Will you do it again?”

The answer is yes, and on Friday, August 23rd, a plane with the banner message “Renew Star Trek Prodigy! Go Fast!” flew over Southern California, taking several loops above a pair of Netflix office buildings on Sunset Blvd. There was a gathering of Star Trek fans at that location to cheer the plane on as well as it circled the Netflix offices for over an hour.

Planning for another flight actually had already started before the Prodigy panel at SDCC last month. UK-based superfan Michele Stokes, who organized the 2023 flight, tells TrekMovie, “I was blown away by Kate’s comments, but they weren’t the main motivation. Several people had already approached me about doing another banner at that point, so whilst it wasn’t the main motivation, it certainly helped.”

On Friday, Mulgrew expressed her appreciation for the effort on Twitter/X calling it “marvelous” and praising Michele and Star Trek fans.

This is absolutely marvelous! No other fanbase IN THE WORLD can compare to #StarTrek fans. Thank you to Michele & all who donated ❤️ Proud to be continuing the #StarTrekProdigy journey on @netflix , now hoping to #SetACourseForSeason3 🙌🏻🛫 https://t.co/WdrorwO9bL — Kate Mulgrew (@TheKateMulgrew) August 23, 2024

For 2024, Stokes once organized a crowdfunding campaign for an aerial banner, which gathered over $2100 through small contributions from dozens of fans. Excess money from the campaign was donated to UNICEF . The flight was originally planned for August 15, but was delayed a couple of times due to FAA paperwork issues. Stokes tells TrekMovie why she is putting in so much for the show: “We wanted to amplify the demand for this that exists on social media and within the fandom, and thought the best, most direct way was to repeat the stunt that helped push Netflix towards picking the series up in the first place.”

star trek prodigy behind the voice actors

The 2024 Netflix flyover also got the attention of the creative team behind the show. Co-creators and showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman shared Michele’s video with their thanks and the message “Warms the soul.” Co-executive producer Aaron Waltke shared a photo from one of the people at the event, thanking all the fans from their support with the message to “keep watching” and to spread the word to get more people to watch on Netflix.

If there is one thing I have learned, it is the #StarTrekProdigy fans are passionate, dedicated, and incredible. Thank you for all the love and support. And for raising money to fight ALS, as well. Keep watching — spread the word to check out our series on Netflix! 🖖 https://t.co/njWyO5Rhsl — Aaron J. Waltke (@GoodAaron) August 23, 2024

So again we wait. Things are a bit different this time, as season 2 was mostly completed when Netflix picked up the license for the series last October. Speaking to TrekMovie before the second season launched , Kevin Hageman was realistic about the 3rd season pickup chances, saying “From what I see of Netflix when they do pickup shows for a season 3, which is very rare, it’s not about doing well, it has to do gangbusters .” We do know that the second season showed up on some Netflix top 10 lists internationally, but not in the USA. The Hagemans have talked about how there are some early ideas on where to take the show in a third season, but they have also noted it could take up to three years from getting a green light to any release.

If you are looking for a way to support the show, keep watching and rewatching it on Netflix, talk about it on social media, and get your friends and family to watch it too.

Video from Netflix building

Due to the flight being delayed and rescheduled multiple times, only a handful of fans were able to attend the Netflix building flyover. One of those who did make it was Jessica Edmonds , who made a video of her Prodigy  pilgrimage.

Prodigy coming home in November

The second was released digitally on VOD earlier this month and it arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on November 12. The new release includes all 20 episodes as well as two all-new featurettes with interviews with the cast and creatives. You can pre-order the Blu-ray from Amazon for $24.49  and the  DVD for $19.99 .

Interview: Kate Mulgrew On Chakotay And The ‘Prodigy’ Janeways; Her Conditions For More Live-Action Star Trek

Star Trek: Prodigy is the best thing to come out of Star Trek for me since 2005. It’s such a delightful and inspiring show. The new characters are amazing, absolutely love Janeway and the others being back and the people making it completely gets, loves and understands Star Trek.

I really hope it gets a season 3 and so happy to see the passion from fans such as this woman. She deserves so much praise for what she has done.

As Kate Mulgrew said, no other fandom in the world has the passion and commitment as Star Trek fans and she’s totally right.

And after I finish my Voyager rewatch I plan to watch all of Prodigy again will be buying the Blu rays as well.

Hear, hear!

Totally agree! Their passion for this show is felt in every episode..It definitely deserves more.

And someone told me Prodigy season 2 now has the highest audience ratings of any new season of NuTrek on IMDB so far. That is pretty amazing if true.

That is truly amazing to hear! I still enjoy Picard season 3 more overall but Prodigy hands down is the better show.

I loved it so much I convinced two of my Trek besties to try it who never watched it either and they both loved it. And one is like me and been disappointed with most of NuTrek.

But everywhere I go online people only say great things about this show. I just wished more people watched it but I say this originally ignoring season one myself. So I understand the hesitation directly.

But everyone who gives it a chance mostly loves it.

I feel the same about PIC S3, but that season appeared to be lightning in a bottle, unfortunately. Sadly, I don’t know anyone personally who watches Trek anymore. My best friend, who was an avid Fan like myself, passed away two years ago. But I’m pretty sure he would have enjoyed Prodigy as I do. I’m glad you gave the show a chance and that you like it, Legacy – to me, easily the best written Trek show in the last 25 years. Cheers.

I am very sorry you lost someone so close to you. I am now at the age where I lost a few long time friends and it still hurts. And yes like you I don’t know many people in real life who watches Star Trek anymore. It’s very different from the 70’s, 80’s and certainly the 90’s where I had a lot of friends and a few family members who watched it, many who started when TNG premiered.

Today it’s sadly different. Even people back then who never watched it knew it was around because it was all over TV at least. Most people I know has never heard of these new shows and I imagine much harder to get new fans onboard unless they already have Paramount + or something.

Prodigy itself looked like it paid the price for it. I do think Picard season 3 was stronger but it also felt more adult and serious which I naturally prefer. And seeing that cast together again will always be great. Nothing in the last 20 years will compare.

I am however very happy I gave this show a chance and it was people from this board who convinced me. I hate to say this but I don’t know if we’ll get anything this good for a long time (not counting LDS since I never seen it).

Hopefully I’ll be proven wrong. Always a treat to talk to you dear!

This is cool, though Star Trek fandom is hardly the only devoted fanbase that has convinced networks to renew shows.

Did this article say they are?

Did my comment say it had?

Well I think it’s quite obvious Star Trek is not the only show that has convinced networks to renew shows. Just wondering what was in the article that made you highlight this point? If it’s a side note not related to the article, then I misunderstood your comment.

Great to see! Both seasons of Prodigy were amazing and deserves to keep going! I want more Dal, Gwyn, Janeway, Rok. the Doctor, Jangkom, Zero and the others to continue new adventures.

I agree with the others who say Prodigy the best consistently written show put out in the ‘new age’ of Trek. I could watch this show for years, this creative team gets ‘it.’

I just started on Prodigy season 1, having ignored it as a “kiddie show” before. After just 10 episodes, I am very surprised at how good it is. It is possibly the best of all the new shows.

I think that is a very common. If the views /metrics of this show is low its because many haven’t given it a chance. Not because viewers were not retained after intial viewing.

I was the same, blew if off at first because of it’s target demographic. So glad I decided to give it a try.

I hope they get a third season. It really is the best of the modern Trek shows.

It is. Imagine if they somehow made the jump to live action – now THAT’D be 👉🎆👈!!!

I been saying since season 1 if this was a live action show the response to it would’ve been much bigger and popular. For starters you would have Kate Mulgrew coming back to live action and that alone would’ve been pretty huge for fans. Add the Doctor in season 2 and even more so.

But the stories themselves is what really drawn people in. I have no doubt this show could’ve gone 5 seasons easily as a live action show.

I’ve got no problem with animation however, it lets the original actors have a much less rigourous schedule or if they’ve somehow aged out of their roles to the degree that might not fit well with the story (and prevents an Irishman use of deaging) and in the event of tragedy or someone not being interested (ie: maybe Kes could make an appearance) they can re-cast the voice easier. Quality animation (even 2d / cell shaded, more realistic) is a far too underused brush in the toolkit as it were to let the original characters and eras live on

Exactly. I’ve been doing what I can on my end in my little corner of the world, directing more eyeballs to the show. 😊

Let’s hope there’s enough momentum, globally, for Netflix to see that there’s a sincere demand for more, as well as a recognition of high quality storytelling (compared to P+ not seeing it). 🤞

Yes, we need season 3 of Prodigy and a Traveler spinoff would be good too. If Netflix does pick it up, it will likely be a shorter season (8-10 episodes).

If they want the banners to have the desired effect, they should replace “renew” with “watch”. Getting people to watch it is what is going to make the difference.

I think getting people to watch is more effective thorough word of mouth and online lobbying. This fly sign was strategically targeting Netflix employees at that building .A specific message to Netflix.

Yeah, I think the general consensus is that there weren’t enough eyes on the release of season two to warrant a third season.

There is no consensus yet, because Netflix has not released any numbers yet and are still looking at data for the show. No one will know until Netflix says one way or the other.

I still haven’t watched it, and I watched and enjoyed season 1. Just not feeling it.

If this had been a live action reboot instead of DSC, Star Trek might still be popular and fandom less polarised. It’s the only one of the new shows that feels like the Star Trek of the past.

If you like the other stuff, more power to you though.

I like most of the other shows but definitely agree Prodigy does it the best. And why it sucks it may have the shortest life out of all the new shows.

Officially , Prodigy may only have 2 seasons but it has released as many episodes to date as Lower Decks (we know LDS has one more season coming) and actually has more episodes than Picard. Still feels too short though.

I think the biggest challenge in renewing or greenlighting the series is the cost of producing it. It is Show BUSINESS, and investors/shareholders deserve a return on their investment. I’d pay extra for Netflix’s Trek content.

Let’s go Prodigy!!!

This and Lower Decks are easily my two favorite Trek shows so very sad for me they both can end this year.

But it’s great to see passionate fans trying their best to keep them alive. Sadly this isn’t the 90s anymore and nothing seems to last very long these days. But Prodigy deserves to go at least longer than two seasons. But I’m at least happy it completed its story if season 2 is the end.

And we can see these characters show up in other places in time. I know we will get more of the Voyager characters like Janeway and the Doctor is already coming back but I really want to see these kid characters again. They were so well developed and deserves more adventures.

Netflix isn’t going to pay for a show that belongs to a franchise that they don’t own. It makes no sense.

They are making a Ghostbusters animated show and have already made a Jurassic World show. They own neither of those franchises.

Netflix also paid for Discovery until Paramount took season 4 away from them.

Star Wars Outlaws Kay Vess

Ubisoft and Lucasfilm’s open-world video game “ Star Wars Outlaws ” launched Friday, giving fans of the galaxy far, far away a chance to play as a new character, Kay Vess (voiced by “Tarot” and “Star Trek: Section 31” star Humberly González ) in a story set in between the events of the original film trilogy’s “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.”

Popular on variety.

Kay is also unique in the “Star Wars” universe in that the character is the first Latina lead in the history of the franchise. This fact is a huge point of pride for González, who was born in Venezuela, who says she has met Latinx fans at preview events who have tears in their eyes over seeing themselves portrayed in “Outlaws.”

“I met this young girl who came dressed as Kay Vess. She built everything herself. She created the classic bomber leather blue jacket that Kay Vess wears, and track pants, the boots, she had her hair done, and the makeup. She even had this backpack, and it was Nix,” González said. “I was in awe, because it was a moment in real time of how important representation is — and especially having female protagonists in the gaming industry. There can be so much toxicity, a lot of misogyny, a lot of just trolls on the internet, that when women enter this space, there can be a lot of sexism, even though there is so much creativity and expertise when it comes to women in the field. And this young girl came to me and just said, ‘I have been waiting for a project like this for so long, for me to play as a strong female lead and explore an open world.’ And she just wanted to thank me. We were both in tears because I said it means just as much for me because I didn’t grow up seeing myself represented on screen, and being a Latina and being the lead of one of the biggest franchises in our time, means so much. That was a moment that made me realize the magnitude of what we’re doing and what it means for me to enter this franchise.”

González spoke with Variety about starring in “Star Wars Outlaws” amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA video game actors strike , which began July 26. While the Ubisoft-developed “Star Wars Outlaws” is exempt from the work stoppage and not among the struck titles, González addressed the central issue behind the strike for herself and other actors, which is increased protections surrounding artificial intelligence (AI), and how she believes her work as Kay Vess proves the importance of the issue.

“I love this job so much, I would love to keep doing it for many years to come. I think it’s important to fight for our rights, to respect the actors’ craft, and I hope that with the actors on the picket line and bringing these issues to the front, that they realize that no AI could ever take over what a real human can do,” González said. “I feel so blessed to be able to play Kay Vess, because what infuses her is my own experience of growing up in Venezuela and being an immigrant. Leaving everything behind, starting over and me following my own dream, which is such a big parallel to Kay Vess, having grown up the way she did, coming from nothing, and having this idea of what freedom is and what it means for her. So when it comes to that, I will always be on the side of, let’s protect our rights.”

“I think it would be incredible to see Kay Vess in live action, because one thing that we don’t see in animation is those micro expressions of a real human being on screen,” González said. “And it would be incredible for me to experience what it would be like to be literally in her costume, in her appearance, her likeness, in the landscape, to see her interact with real characters, the creatures. It would be a dream come true. I certainly would not say no to the opportunity. And I think there’s so many opportunities to see Kay Vess and other aspects of established roles in ‘Star Wars,’ because we’re in the original trilogy, and there’s so many opportunities for her to exist or show up and in different places. So it would be amazing, and I think fans would love it.”

Taylor sheridan's epic drama series 'lioness' is returning to paramount+ earlier than expected, petition to renew 'the acolyte' passes major milestone as fan support grows for cancelled star wars series, the big picture.

  • Exciting news for Star Trek fans: Season 4 of Lower Decks takes the Cerritos crew to the iconic USS Voyager.
  • Mark your calendars! Lower Decks Season 4 lands on Paramount+ on September 7.
  • Paramount has also released a new poster for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4.

A new trailer for Season 4 of Star Trek: Lower Decks takes the crew of the Cerritos to the USS Voyager. The premiere of Season 4 is just around the corner and as Star Trek fans eagerly await the return of our favorite lower deckers, we've received a new look at the upcoming episodes promising epic adventures for Starfleet's most chaotic crew . The new trailer for Lower Decks Season 4 takes fans on a journey back through some of the best moments so far for ensigns Beckett Mariner ( Tawny Newsome ), Brad Boimler ( Jack Quaid ), D'Vana Tendi ( Noël Wells ) and Sam Rutherford ( Eugene Cordero ). Senior officers Commander Jack Ransom ( Jerry O'Connell ), Lieutenant Shaxs ( Fred Tatasciore ), Doctor T'ana ( Gillian Vigman ), and Captain Carol Freeman ( Dawnn Lewis ) also get their own spotlights as the trailer hypes audiences up for the adventure of a lifetime.

The most exciting part of the new footage, however, is the return of the USS Voyager. Mariner elatedly exclaims that they get to do something on Voyager — and it is safe to say we're just as happy about it as she is — following a stunning shot of the ship's return to animation after being previously seen in the Season 1 finale of Star Trek: Prodigy . The rest of the new footage speed runs through the kind of adventures that only the crew of the Cerritos can deliver, with Boimler running from an active volcano, Tendi and Mariner visiting another Orion planet, and a terrifyingly cute new alien species that fans are going to want plushies of immediately.

Alongside the new trailer, Paramount also released an adorable new poster featuring our favorite ensigns hijacking a shuttlecraft while a planet explodes in the background. The range of emotion of each character runs the full gamut from Mariner's thrilled determination to Boimler's pure terror, with Rutherford and Tendi both somewhere in the middle. See the poster below.

It's the Best Time to Be a 'Star Trek: Lower Decks Fan'

Fans of Star Trek: Lower Decks have had quite the summer, with the series making its first live-action debut in an epic crossover episode with Strange New Worlds . The seventh episode of Strange New Worlds Season 2, titled "Those Old Scientists," saw Boimler and Mariner sucked through a portal and sent back in time for a one-of-a-kind adventure with the crew of Captain Pike's ( Anson Mount ) USS Enterprise. The episode also gave voice actors Quaid and Newsome the opportunity to play their characters in live-action, while also giving fans a taste of what the SNW characters would look like in the style of Lower Decks . The new season of Lower Decks is said to be a love letter to Star Trek fans that strikes a bold new path in this beloved universe. You can read more about the upcoming episodes in our review of Season 4 right now.

For a limited time, you can catch up on Season 3 for free on YouTube and celebrate the return of the animated series on Star Trek Day with theatrical screenings in select cities. Lower Decks Season 4 premieres on Paramount+ on September 7, see the new trailer down below.
