The tournament's famous clay

Description

At the appointed time, we'll meet inside the Grande Boutique, Gate 36 of the Roland Garros stadium .

Nestled in the south of the Bois de Boulogne , Roland Garros hosts the third Grand Slam tennis tournament every year. World tennis stars gather in Paris to compete on the famous red clay court and win the coveted trophy. For an hour and a half, we'll take you inside this sports complex to explore its different rooms and areas.

On this exclusive guided tour of Roland Garros, we'll go  behind the scenes , taking a rare look into the press room , the changing rooms , and the central grandstand,  and pass through the corridor that leads the players to the main court .

While viewing the impressive stadium, your guide will offer many anecdotes about the famous foursome: The Four Musketeers. As we walk through the stadium, you'll discover all the secrets the majestic Philippe-Chatrier court has to share.

Of course, in a place that has witnessed so much action, the tour wouldn´t be complete without learning about more contemporary tennis greats, such as Björn Borg , Chris Evert , Steffi Graff , and, of course, Rafa Nadal , who have gone on to win this world-renowned tournament.

To complete the tour, we'll take a look at the impressive Philippe Chatrier court  that now seats 15,225 spectators as of a 2019 renovation.

Great for tennis fans

I am a big tennis fan, actually, a big Nadal fan, so Roland Garros was always my dream place to visit. I went there two weeks ago and was not disappointed. The guided tour was fun. You can go into the players’ locker room and also the center court. Don’t miss the museum (with an extra 5 euros), it’s small, but it has a library with many tennis books and also the demonstration of the championship trophies.

Great tour! The guide was very accommodating of the various languages. Highly recommended for tennis lovers!!!

The guided tour of Roland Garros stadium in Paris

The game at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris

My second Paris pilgrimage was cine&shymatic only in the sense that it stemmed from another type of motion-picture viewing &mdash watching sport, on television. For close to a decade now, I have been a huge fan of the Spanish tennis champion Rafael Nadal, popularly known as the &ldquoThe King of Clay&rdquo, and the man who has won the French Open at the Roland Garros Stadium an astonishing nine times in the past ten years. Having resigned myself to never getting to see Rafa play in person (at his favourite setting anyway), I went to the official tournament website and registered for an hour-long guided tour of the venue I have seen so often on TV.

If I were to list the things I didn&rsquot get to see, this tour might be reckoned a disappointment. It being March &mdash two months before the start of this year&rsquos tournament&mdashthere was extensive renovation work going on, which meant the players&rsquo locker rooms were not open to public viewing. Besides, the grand Philippe-Chatrier Court &mdash where the men&rsquos semi-finals and final are played each year &mdash had almost no red clay on it instead there were craters in the ground and plenty of regular mud of the sort that I can more easily find in the dusty park outside my house.

This barely dampened my spirit though like the tireless Rafa &mdash a master at wearing op&shyponents down in the toughest of match situations, and a less than fluent English speak&shyer &mdash I decided to &ldquofocus on the positives, no&rdquo Even if Chatrier lacked personality without its distinctive brick-red clay, the stadium itself had multiple associations for me, and I could imagine I heard the cheers of thousands of viewers as Rafa collapsed to his knees after the last point of the fortnight. I visited the press room, where the champions give their post-match interviews, sat in the chair where Rafa has answered dozens of inane questions over the years, and chuckled at one of the other visitors imitating a famous comical moment from an old press conference &mdash an inopportune leg cramp that led Nadal to slide slowly under the table while he was speaking to a journalist. I took photos of a wall with the players&rsquo signatures on it, and even got my befuddled wife Abhilasha to pose next to the door of the room where players are administered surprise drug tests.

Much like the view of props at the cinema museum, Roland Garros was a little surpris&shying in how small and compact it was everything seemed like a miniature version of what one sees on television, and I was especially taken aback by the tininess of the second &ldquoshowpiece&rdquo court, named after the legendary Suzanne Lenglen. But this added to the charm. Tucked away in what seems like a back-lane in western Paris, on the boundary of the Bois de Boulogne public park, this is the smallest of four Grand Slam venues and it feels like a singular, old-world place, given that clay courts have been increasingly mar&shyginalised as &ldquospecialist surfaces&rdquo in recent years.

I ended my tour by posing next to a statue of the legendary Miss Lenglen, outside the court named in her honour. Swinging her racquet ominously in an arc, she reminded me of the shadowy Mrs. Bates with her large knife in the shower scene in Psycho . The City of Lights had brought together two of my inner worlds in a most unexpected way.

Guided tours &mdash in English and French &mdash are conducted multiple times each week (to book tours send an email to [email protected] one-hour tour &pound10.5, stadium plus museum tour &euro15).

Stade Roland-Garros

RGA_1P_STADE ROLAND-GARROS - 16_9

Roland-Garros is a legendary stadium. An iconic global tennis area, it will be a key venue for the Paris 2024 Games for which it is writing a new page in its illustrious history. For the Paris 2024 Games, Roland-Garros will not only host the tennis and wheelchair tennis competitions, but also boxing and sitting volleyball.

Named after French aviator Roland Garros, the stadium was built in 1928 as the stage for the achievements of French players at the Davis Cup. Located on the edge of Bois de Boulogne, close to Parc des Princes, Roland-Garros hosts the French Open each year (one of the four tennis Grand Slam tournaments), a major global sporting event organised by the French Tennis Federation that is broadcast in more than 220 countries worldwide.

Extended and modernised on a number of occasions over the years to rival the other Grand Slam venues, Roland-Garros is now spread over 12 hectares and has 18 clay courts. The latest modernisation plan, rolled out from 2015 to 2021, has made it possible to install a retractable roof with a revolutionary design for the Philippe-Chatrier court, while a 5,000-seat court named after Simonne-Mathieu was integrated into the Jardin des Serres d'Auteuil gardens.

Stade Roland-Garros, which hosts international tennis tournaments each year, will continue to stage a range of sporting and cultural events.

Here’s a recent U.S. Open story, via the AP:

NEW YORK (AP) — As big a deal as finally winning an Olympic gold medal was to Novak Djokovic, as much as he has accomplished in tennis — the men’s-record 24 Grand Slam trophies , the 99 total titles, the most weeks at No. 1 for any player and on and on — do not for a moment think he is satisfied as the U.S. Open begins.

“People would ask me: ‘Now that you have basically won everything with the golden medal, what else is there to win?’ I still feel the drive. I still have the competitive spirit,” the 37-year-old from Serbia said Saturday. “I still want to make more history and enjoy myself on the tour.”

If it seems like there is always some sort of milestone in the offing when Djokovic takes the court, that’s because there usually is.

This time around at Flushing Meadows, where play begins Monday and the No. 2-seeded Djokovic faces 138th-ranked Radu Albot of Moldova at night in Arthur Ashe Stadium, there is the latest opportunity to get major singles championship No. 25, a total no man or woman ever has reached in tennis.

As the defending champion , there is also a chance to become the first man to win at least two consecutive titles at the U.S. Open since Roger Federer swept five in a row from 2004 to 2008.

“I didn’t know it was that long. Hopefully that changes this year,” Djokovic said. “I mean, that’s the goal. The goal is always for me to try to go all the way to the finals and fight for the trophy. That kind of mindset or approach is no different for me this year.”

That consistency of purpose is what has carried him to all of his achievements.

“I want to follow what Djokovic has done always in his career,” said Carlos Alcaraz , the 21-year-old who already owns four majors himself, “which is getting better and improving, showing up at the court playing at his best level.”

It’s also as widely admired by other players in the sport as the numbers — “Colossal,” Alcaraz called the idea of winning a 25th major — associated with Djokovic’s name.

“Your baseline average level just has to be so much better than everyone else’s. It speaks to how much better someone is than everyone else, because there are so many people just trying to get that one — trying to get one or two; a couple,” 12th-seeded American Taylor Fritz said. “It’s amazing. And obviously the discipline throughout the year, to never be satisfied and always want more, is also just extremely impressive in itself.”

Djokovic hasn’t competed anywhere since beating Alcaraz in a pair of tiebreakers in the Summer Games title match.

The way Djokovic reacted that day — kneeling, trembling, crying — and the way he spoke about it Saturday left no doubt about its importance to him.

“Just a very proud moment of experiencing the gold medal around my neck, with the Serbian anthem and Serbian flag. Very, very special. Probably the most intense emotions I have ever had on a tennis court,” he said. “The moment of when I achieved it, how I achieved it, after years of trying, the journey that was the way it was, I think makes it even more unique.”

And now it’s time to turn the page and pursue more hardware.

The season stops for no one, and Djokovic is not interested in taking any kind of a break right now.

He’s won the U.S. Open on four occasions. Making that five is what is on his mind at the moment.

Consider: Djokovic is on the verge of his first year since 2017 without claiming at least one major trophy. He lost to Jannik Sinner — whose steroids case Djokovic weighed in on Saturday — in the semifinals of the Australian Open; withdrew from the French Open before the quarterfinals because he needed surgery on his right knee; lost to Alcaraz in the final at Wimbledon.

“Grand Slams are the pillars of our sport. They are THE most important historical tennis events that we have,” Djokovic said. “So if you don’t get pumped and inspired to play your best tennis at Grand Slams, it’s hard to do that anywhere else.”
