The Top 10 American Whiskey Distilleries To Tour Now By Forbes Travel Guide Correspondent Sarah White

April 11, 2012

local whisky tour

Whiskey-only bars, tasting flights and $100-plus pours are more common than ever, but to become a real whiskey connoisseur you need to learn the liquor making process from the inside. We rounded up the country’s top 10 whiskey distilleries where you can tour the facilities, learn about mashbills and barrel woods and discover what gives your favorite label its distinct flavor, whether its rye or single malt, blended or bourbon.

1. George Washington’s Distillery & Gristmill, Mount Vernon, Va. Our first president likely wet his whistle on some of the whiskey his own distillery produced after its founding in 1797. Restored and reopened in 2006, it now bottles an un-aged white Rye whiskey and a barrel-aged (in charred American oak) whiskey using historically accurate techniques. (For example, it hand-chop logs for wood stoves that heat the stills). Demand outstrips supply here — spirits are on sale just twice a year, with only a few hundred bottles to each batch. Tour the 18th-century distillery year-round.

Stay: The distillery is an easy 16-mile drive from the nation’s capital, and a stay at the luxurious and intimate Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Jefferson Hotel Washington, D.C. will give you a stylish place to retreat to where you can sample even more fine liquors at the cozy Quill bar.

Stay: Experience Southern hospitality at its finest at Five-Star Hermitage Hotel in historic downtown Nashville , 75 miles northwest of the distillery and in the center of the city’s music scene. The hotel can arrange for a private luxury car to transport you to and from Jack Daniel’s.

3. St. George Spirits, Alameda, Calif. Originally founded as an eau de vie (fruit brandy) distillery 30 years ago, St. George now produces two whiskey labels at its location in a former airplane hangar near San Francisco . See the huge collection of copper pots and aging barrels during free tours offered on weekends. In the tasting room, sample St. George Single Malt whiskey, made from roasted and smoked barley spirits, and the well-known Breaking & Entering Bourbon, blended and aged onsite from a selection of Kentucky bourbons.

Stay: The distillery is a quick cab ride across San Francisco Bay from The St. Regis San Francisco . Decorated in sleek creams and dark woods, the Five-Star hotel has contemporary art installations that echo the vibrant museum and shopping districts just beyond its doors.

Stay: About 20 miles southwest of Woodinville is downtown Seattle ’s The Fairmont Olympic Hotel. The Four-Star hotel has unique 1920’s Italian Renaissance architecture and top-notch service just a stroll away from Pike Place Market.

5. High West Distillery & Saloon, Park City, Utah . You can practically ski right into the tasting rooms in the restored mining-era home in Old Town Park City , located just blocks from some of Park City Resort’s ski runs. A 250-gallon copper pot is visible from the street through floor-to-ceiling windows, and here you can learn how whiskey is made in small batches before sampling a few of the 12 labels offered, including a barrel-aged Manhattan called The 36th Vote (in honor of Utah’s role in repealing Prohibition). Whiskeys run the gamut from 12-year old barrel-aged ryes to un-aged western oat “silver whiskeys.” Free afternoon tours are available daily by reservation.

Stay: The Five-Star Stein Eriksen Lodge is two miles away in the luxury resort community of Deer Valley. The clubby-classic wood décor, majestic fireplaces, heated sidewalks and outdoor activities keep the mountain magic alive year round.

6. Buffalo Trace, Frankfort, Ky. All bourbons are whiskey, but not all whiskeys are bourbons: A trip to Buffalo Trace in Kentucky’s Bourbon County will help you decode this riddle once and for all (hint: bourbon must be made from at least 51 percent corn). Its century-old warehouses are open for free hourly tours Monday through Saturday, winding through the reportedly haunted distillery and barrel-aging facility before finishing up with tastes of Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and chocolate bourbon balls. Take it up a notch (but be prepared to pay) with tastes of aged Pappy Van Winkle or George T. Stagg, also bottled here.

Stay: The 90-room 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville doubles as a contemporary art museum and cultural center in the heart of the historic downtown, about 55 miles west of Buffalo Trace.

Stay: Combine a visit to Woodford Reserve with one to Buffalo Trace (about 11 miles north) for a fun, whiskey-filled day trip. Be sure to try 21c Museum Hotel’s restaurant, Proof on Main.

8. Balcones Distillery, Waco, Texas If the idea of whiskey made from 100 percent roasted blue corn intrigues you, visit the Balcones Distillery and try to decipher its super-secret method of smoking liquid whiskey. Founder and head distiller Chip Tate’s crafted and installed the copper still onsite in 2009, and a factory tour gets you an up-close look at every step of the double distillation and aging process. Round off your tour with a sampling of lightly aged Baby Blue and the rich True Blue corn whiskey in the barrel-lined tasting room.

Stay: Book a suite at the Four-Star Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek , about 100 miles north of the distillery, to mimic the measured pace of Balcones’ deliberate methodology. Located in a charming residential neighborhood along a winding, wooded creek, the hotel boasts elegant Italianate architecture and a gracious, welcoming staff.

9. RoughStock Distillery, Bozemon, Mont. This distillery uses local water from mountain-fed streams and Montana-grown wheat, barley and corn to produce its five labels, including un-aged sweet corn white whiskey and a barley whiskey bottled at cask strength (undiluted after barrel aging). Tours of Roughstock are half-day volunteer “bottling parties,” where visitors are put to work filling and labeling bottles before hitting the tasting room. Plan ahead, as the working tours are only offered three Saturdays a month.

Stay: Make a day trip to the distillery from the ultimate glamping destination, The Resort at Paws Up in Greenough, Mont., a hilly retreat on the Blackfoot River that offers upscale safari-style tent camping from May though September.

10. Tuthilltown Spirits, Gardiner, New York . As one of very few whiskey distilleries in the state, Tuthilltown made a splash when it produced New York’s first bourbon in 2006 — Hudson Baby Bourbon, a 100 percent corn, single-grain spirit that’s aged in oak barrels. Here you can taste five different labels including an aged rye, a white dog whiskey and a four-grain bourbon. Visit the 220-year-old gristmill on Friday through Sunday for tours to see batches labeled by hand, or visit in fall when harvest season sends distillerymen out into nearby rye fields.

Stay: Nestled in the Catskills, Emerson Resort & Spa in Mount Tremper — 35 miles north of Tuthilltown — is a country retreat that puts visitors in the center of a thriving summer art festival scene.

One to watch: WhistlePig Farm, Shoreham, Vt. While not yet an actual distillery, this restored Vermont farm is where hand-selected whiskey blends become WhistlePig Straight Rye under the direction of master distiller Dave Pickerell (he honed his craft at Maker’s Mark). WhistlePig Farm is growing high-quality grain for future blends and storing both oak and used bourbon barrels full of 100 percent rye spirits — aged for 10 years before bottling — for its 100 proof rye. Tours are scheduled to start up this fall.

Stay: The countryside takes a starring role during a stay at Five-Star Twin Farms in Barnard, Vt., with secluded private cabins decorated in different themes, from Moroccan to Scandinavian. From here, it’s a picturesque 60-mile drive on bucolic mountain roads to WhistlePig Farm.

15 Best Tennessee Whiskey Distilleries & Tours for 2024

Best Whiskey Distilleries and Tennessee Whiskey Tours

Best Tennessee Whiskey Distilleries & Whiskey Tours for 2024

Chris Stapleton sang about it for a reason. Tennessee whiskey is some of the smoothest and richest on the market, and on top of incredible barbeque and some of the greatest musical artists the United States has ever known – like Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin – it’s one of the state’s many pride and joys.

There are a million and one reasons to visit the great Volunteer State, but whatever your occasion is, you can’t go wrong with adding a stop or two along Tennessee’s phenomenal whiskey trail to your trip.

On top of famous whiskey labels like Jack Daniel’s that have won the world over, there are dozens of distilleries in the state with their own stories just waiting to be uncovered. If you’re looking at adding a little local culture to your trip, then keep reading for our list of the best whiskey distilleries in Tennessee.

Jack Daniel Distillery: The Oldest Whiskey Distillery in Tennessee

Winetraveler Rating:

133 Lynchburg Hwy, Lynchburg, TN 37352

(931) 759-6357

Let’s begin our journey with the obvious: if you’re adding a distillery visit and whiskey tasting to your trip to the Volunteer State, then it ought to include Jack Daniel’s. Established in historic Lynchburg way back in 1866, this iconic stop on the whiskey trail is the oldest registered distillery in the country.

Luckily for you fellow whiskey lovers out there, Jack Daniel Distillery offers tours seven days a week, and being equal parts history and whiskey, taking the drive down to Lynchburg will give you one of the best distillery tours in the state. If you’d prefer to avoid driving and would like a private, guided experience in a comfortable vehicle, arrange a tour direct to the distillery from Nashville .

Who would have thought the country’s most popular whiskey and its world-famous black and white label would have grown to fame and fortune in one of Tennessee’s last dry counties?

Nashville Barrel Company Distillery and Whiskey Bar

809 Heathcote Ave, Nashville, TN 37210

(615) 891-1046

There is a ton of fun to be had in Nashville, and yes, as wild as the honky tonks are, much of the fun can be found off Broadway and away from downtown’s neon lights. If you’re taking a trip to Music City and are looking for something to wash down that hot chicken, then this is the stop for you.

Even though this Nashville spot is quite young – only opening its doors in 2018 – cofounders James Davenport and Mike Hinds lead their operation with their unique cocktail of ingenuity, experience, and vision. Curious to taste some of their award-winning spirits? Nashville Barrel Co. offers flights, premium tastings, and more. If you’re looking for a more intimate tasting experience at one of the best distilleries in Tennessee, you can schedule a private tour at their Nashville location as well.

Recommended: Consider taking our recommended guided craft distillery tour along the Tennessee whiskey trail and leave the driving to someone else. You’ll meet at a central location in downtown Nashville, and all distillery entrance fees are included.

Ole Smoky Distillery

423 6th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37203

(615) 647-8272

Every time we get an itch to head back down to Music City, we always head to the Ole Smoky location on 6th and Peabody right after dropping off our bags. Not only do they make some of the best moonshine in Tennessee, but their Nashville location hosts a fun bar serving all the live country music and hot chicken that you would expect. From what we’ve heard, the Ole Smoky Pigeon Forge distillery is a pretty great time too.

Make no mistake though. Just because Ole Smoky specializes in flavored moonshine doesn’t mean they don’t distill some amazing whiskey as well. Their barrelhouse distillery in Gatlinburg makes some of the best whiskey and moonshine in Tennessee, complete with group tastings.

Old Forge Distillery

170 Old Mill Ave, Pigeon Forge, TN 37863

(865) 774-4126

We mentioned Pigeon Forge in the last section, and even though that town is mostly for tourists, they do have some great whiskey, including the Old Forge Distillery. Located in Old Mill Square, this Pigeon Forge distillery is a historic icon and has one of the oldest continually operated gristmills in the country.

Like Ole Smokey, the folks at Old Forge produce and serve a wide variety of different spirits. Bourbon is what made them famous, but if that’s not what you’re in the mood for, they offer several other award-winning drinks, such as vodka, cream liqueurs, their famous 1830 moonshine, and more.

Cascade Hollow Distilling Co.

1950 Cascade Hollow Rd, Tullahoma, TN 37388

(931) 408-2410

Cascade Hollow might not sound too familiar, but if you’re a bourbon lover like most of us are at Winetraveler, then their signature product, George Dickel, certainly ought to. When it comes to whiskey distilleries in Tennessee, Cascade Hollow is one of the most famous out there, so making a trip out to their Tullahoma location is absolutely worth your while.

George Dickel’s successors still make their bourbon in honor of their founder’s vision, and your guide can fill you in on all the steps they go through to make their Tennessee whiskey “mellow as moonlight.” Add some ice, pour some bitters, drink it neat, whatever you want; but George Dickel deserves to be enjoyed during your trip down the Whiskey Trail .

Leiper’s Fork Distillery

3381 Southall Rd, Franklin, TN 37064

(615) 465-6456

Among all of the whiskey distilleries in Tennessee, this gem in Franklin is one of our personal favorites. Maybe it’s because we’re history lovers, but there is something so inspiring about their dedication to the age-old distilling methods that Tennessee’s original Irish and Scottish settlers used. A trip to Franklin itself is worth it, but once you’re there, stop by the distillery for a glass or tasting to see what makes Leiper’s Fork so authentic and beautiful.

They also host monthly live music events called still house sessions. If you haven’t gotten enough whiskey or live music during your trip to Tennessee, then there aren’t many better ways to experience both at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tennessee Whiskey Distilleries

What is considered to be the best tennessee whiskey.

Tennessee whiskey is best known for its two biggest brands: Jack Daniel’s and George Dickel. Among these, Jack Daniel’s, particularly Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7, is arguably the most iconic and widely recognized Tennessee whiskey globally. However, if we’re talking about the “best” Tennessee whiskey in terms of quality and prestige, the conversation often turns towards more premium offerings. For example, Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select is often highly rated for its complexity and richness. George Dickel also has high-end variants, like their Barrel Select, which is lauded for its smooth and sophisticated flavor profile. Outside these well-known distilleries, newer establishments like Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery are gaining recognition. Their Belle Meade Bourbon, though not technically a Tennessee whiskey due to not following the Lincoln County Process, has received several awards and accolades for its quality. As with any spirit, the “best” Tennessee whiskey often comes down to individual taste preferences, so it’s always a good idea to explore a variety of offerings and find what suits your palate the best.

What is the oldest whiskey distillery in Tennessee?

The title of the oldest registered distillery in Tennessee (and the United States, for that matter) goes to the Jack Daniel’s Distillery, located in Lynchburg. Founded by Jasper Newton “Jack” Daniel in 1866, the distillery is recognized for its charcoal-mellowed Tennessee Whiskey, a process known as the Lincoln County Process. However, it’s worth noting that distilling in Tennessee dates back to well before Jack Daniel’s establishment. For instance, settlers were producing whiskey in the region as early as the late 18th century. But as for legally registered and continuously operating distilleries, Jack Daniel’s holds the title.

How many distilleries are on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail?

The Tennessee Whiskey Trail, a project by the Tennessee Distillers Guild, consists of about 30 distilleries across the state of Tennessee. These distilleries vary in size and style, from large, globally recognized brands like Jack Daniel’s and George Dickel to craft distilleries. The trail was designed to connect these distilleries and provides visitors with a deep dive into the history, tradition, and novelty of Tennessee whiskey.

The Ultimate Guide To Distilleries In NH

local whisky tour

If you’ve spent some time in New Hampshire, you’re probably familiar with the Appalachian Trail, the campgrounds and the beautiful ocean that lines this U.S. State. But that’s not all there is to see there.

After writing about all of the above, I asked around for things in New Hampshire to write about, and someone mentioned a guide to all the distilleries in the state. Visiting them and chronicling my experiences was one of the most pleasurable activities of my summer this year, and it resulted in this ultimate guide to New Hampshire Distilleries!

Distilleries To Visit In New Hampshire

If you’re a fan of spirits, this activity will likely be your favourite in New Hampshire. The distilleries here are rustic and welcoming and will highlight your visit to the Granite State. If you’re a New Hampshire resident, it’s high time that you see some of this state’s most idyllic distilleries and sample all the craft spirits that they have to offer.

From farm distilleries tours to craft ones, below is a list of distilleries that I compiled while on my spirit-tasting tour all over the state.

local whisky tour

Smoky Quartz Distillery

Located on 894 Lafayette Road (Route 1), Seabrook, Smoky Quartz Distillery is named after the official New Hampshire gemstone— the Smoky Quartz. This artisanal distillery is owned and operated by veteran Kevin Karland, who came up with the idea for Smoky Quartz Distillery while listening to rocket mortar attacks in Baghdad, Iraq. The philosophy behind Smoky Quartz spirits is to use as much locally sourced grain as possible, with their rum developing from US-sourced Grade A molasses only.

local whisky tour

The interior of Smoky Quartz Distillery will bring to mind a rustic wine operation because of its reclaimed wood interior and old-world decor.

Make sure to try a glass of their bourbon when you visit them—there’s nothing quite like bourbon sourced locally from the grains of New Hampshire!

Flag Hill Distillery & Winery

While doing my research for my distillery tour guide, I learnt that Flag Hill is the oldest distillery in New Hampshire. Its tasting room is located in the original 17th-century barn that used to house cattle back in the day.

Located on 297 North River Road (Rt. 155), Lee, Flag Hill Distillery is an award-winning distillery and event venue. Most famous for its weddings, this distillery has a lush accompanying vineyard that supplies most of the grapes for its wines . Its in-house farm also provides grains for the distillery’s use and vegetables for its other events.

local whisky tour

I visited Flag Hill on an impromptu trip and took in the sights, and had a fantastic time in the tasting room with some choice vodka, but if you’re a large group of eight people or more, make sure to book your tour ahead of time!

local whisky tour

Live Free Distillery

Live Free Distillery , located on 1000 E. Industrial Dr Manchester is one of the more modern distillery operations in New Hampshire. I stumbled upon this family-run operation on the weekend and was rewarded with a free tour, accompanied by a tasting of their delicious maple syrup whisky.

If you’re looking for a lowkey outing, a weekend visit to the Live Free Distillery may be just the thing for you.

Djinn Spirits Distillery

Don’t be spooked by the name: Djinn Spirits Distillery plays on the homophonic pronunciations of ‘djinn’ and ‘gin’ for its name. It is located at 2 Townsend West, # 9, Nashua, and is the brainchild of a retired New Hampshire couple that also owns two amiable dogs. If you’re lucky, the amicable Border Collies will drop by while you’re on your tour!

If you’ve learnt all that you needed to on the short distillery tour, head to their cosy tasting room and try samples of some of their craft spirits, free of charge. The Krupnik’s tasting is one you’re not going to want to miss!

local whisky tour

If you would like some more in-depth information about the operation, Djinn Spirits distillery also offers classes on whiskey, which cover everything from its history to its production method. In addition, before heading out, I made use of Djinn Spirit’s virtual tour to get a feel of the atmosphere there. Seeing pictures of the family dogs sitting alongside the barrels had me sold!

local whisky tour

Tamworth Distilling

Are you looking for a blend of rustic with modern? Tamworth Distilling may be just the thing you need. Located at 15 Cleveland Hill Road, Tamworth , this repurposed pastoral inn near the White Mountains is an environmentally conscious distillery operation that only utilizes grains from a 150-mile radius.

While on the distillery tour, I heard that their storage area once housed a boxing ring and a dentist’s office in it. The copper still manufactured by Vendome is the highlight of the tour, with its brandy helmet, gin basket and whiskey column providing a variety of flavours. However, you won’t find any tequila or rum here because of the owners’ promise only to produce quality drinks that one can source locally.

local whisky tour

In addition, you can pay a visit to the Tamworth Lyceum, which hosts tastings of Tamworth’s newest recipes, as well as samples of the products that Tamworth Distilling produce with the leftovers from their distillery. These products include granola bars, bread and gin salt.

local whisky tour

Copper Cannon Distillery

This cosy, family-run distillery located at 2 Lyman Way, West Chesterfield, has been on my list for a long time. I passed by Copper Cannon Distillery a few times and heard great things about their rums, so when the time came for me to write my guide about the best New Hampshire distilleries, I figured it was time to visit it.

Housed in a repurposed red post and beam barn, two engineer-turned-distiller cousins own this distillery. While their maple rum was a standout for me, their other rums were also very traditional in taste and brought New England nostalgia to mind.

The owners’ amicable behaviour and the picturesque environment made my distillery tour an enjoyable one. The best part is that you can sample all the distillery products before you decide to buy one of their bottles.

Steadfast Spirits Distilling Company

Owner CJ Lundren always had a passion for making whiskey in the traditional fashion.  He founded Steadfast Spirits Distilling Company in 2016 and opened his tasty room with his wife Lori at their Concord NH location.  Steadfast Distillery offers a variety of corn-based hand-crafted spirits made from the finest ingredients.  Steadfast features Troubles Moonshine as its flagship beverage.  It comes in traditional, vanilla, honey, and maple.

local whisky tour

They also offer a line of Trouble’s Cocktails including Apple Pie, Lemonade, Citrus Squeeze (has a nice Margarita flavor!), Strawberry and Smach (like a Daquari).  They also make a variety of American Bourbons, Whiskey and Rye.

The team at Steadfast is passionate about their craft and are amazing at creating a fun and friendly environment.

You can find Steadfast Distillery at 134 Hall St Ste. H, Concord, NH 03301 and it is absolutely a NH distillery you should visit!

New England Sweetwater Farm and Distillery

New England Sweetwater Farm and Distillery

New England Sweetwater Farm and Distillery is located on Old Chesterfield Road on the way to Mt. Pisgah State Park. It encompasses almost fifty acres of land on which the owners grow fruits and grains for the winery and distillery.

Many restaurants source their liquor from this distillery, so there’s a chance you may have had a bottle of their spirits before visiting. Their tour is an informative one, with the owners walking you through the process of the distilling and production of the artisan spirits you see on display there.

Its gorgeous opal-painted tasting room, combined with its sprawling gardens, provide you with ample opportunities to pose for some memorable pictures for your social media. If you ever visit, make sure to try their honey and maple whiskeys. I bought a bottle of each of these whiskeys to take home with me.

It’s fair to say that I had a lot of fun trying innovative whiskey and rum flavours and touring New Hampshire’s charming distilleries in the process of writing this guide.

Cold Garden Spirits

Former New York City special effects designer moved back to New Hampshire and decided it was time to build a distillery in the barn of his childhood home. Owner Greg Meeh opened Cold Garden Spirits with the vision that it would produce exquisite spirits from locally-sourced fruits and grains.

Greg’s NH distillery features a custom-built Austrian still.  In the summer of 2016 Greg started making his first batches of corn whiskey and fruit eau de vie. Greg makes some delicious brandy and it is worth a visit just to try this!

This distillery is very close to the Canterbury Shaker Village , a wonderful historic landmark in New Hampshire.

local whisky tour

Doire Distilling

In 2018 Doire Distilling in Derry NH was founded by owners Andy Day and Alan Wentworth This is the same team that opened Cask & Vine in Derry NH.

The Best Distilleries in Scotland

If you love a wee dram of the good stuff, then you’re in the right place because Scotland is the undisputed home of whisky. For centuries (records date back to at least the 15th century), the Scots have been distilling, refining, and drinking barrel after barrel of whisky.

From the Scottish Highlands to the remote islands, whisky distillation is an art form that’s been shaped by the sea, the weather, the peat, and even the bog of Scotland. Without a doubt, whisky is the national drink of Scotland, and there are hundreds of distilleries to visit across the country.

But with so many beautiful whiskies to try, you might not know where to begin. That’s why I decided to compile our list of the best distilleries in Scotland. Visit these excellent distilleries, and there’s no doubt you’ll have an amazing time tasting the best whisky in Scotland!

The Top 15 Distilleries in Scotland

1. the scotch whisky experience.

Best Distilleries in Scotland: The Scotch Whisky Experience

Okay, so Edinburgh ’s Scotch Whisky Experience isn’t technically a distillery – no whisky is distilled on the site – but it is the best place in Scotland for an introduction to all things whisky!

The Scotch Whisky Experience takes pride in its place on Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile, and if it’s your first time in Scotland, there’s no better place to learn about the ancient art of distillation before sampling the best scotch from around the country.

Unique Distilleries in Scotland: The Scotch Whisky Experience

This unique experience is home to a replica whisky distillery, where you’ll learn about the centuries-old processes that go into making the finest blends and malts. You’ll learn about the different ingredients, the different whisky-producing regions in Scotland, and the different flavors, tastes, and aromas that different types of whisky are known for. Oh, and there’s a fun theme-park style “barrel ride” through the experience!

You can also see the unique Diageo Claive Vidiz Whisky Collection, which is safely stored away in the vaults of The Scotch Whisky Experience. This is the largest collection of scotch whisky in the world, with the last count putting the number of bottles at 3,384. Once you’ve perused the extensive collection, you’ll be invited for a tasting session in the Amber Restaurant & Whisky Bar.

2. Glenfiddich Distillery

Fun Distilleries in Scotland: Glenfiddich Distillery

One of the most famous whisky brands in Scotland is Glenfiddich, and you can visit their family-owned distillery in the beautiful surrounds of remote Moray, in northeast Scotland.

Glenfiddich Distillery is unusual in a number of ways. First of all, no other distillery has won quite as many awards as this distillery for their single malts – proving the quality of their whiskies. Second, no other distillery has remained family-owned for so long, with a continuous history dating back to 1886, when the Glenfiddich Distillery was founded by William Grant.

Must Visit Distilleries in Scotland: Glenfiddich Distillery

The distillery sources its water from the Fiddich River and employs generations worth of whisky-making experience to produce an excellent single malt. This is the classic Speyside Single Malt, and if you’re partial to a dram of this iconic tipple, then this is the best place to enjoy it!

You can tour the distillery to learn more about the family’s history of whisky production and how they’ve evolved and developed their brand over the years, surviving hardships and economic forces that put many more family-owned distilleries out of business.

The tour ends with a tasting, where you’ll be able to sample the delectable Glennfiddich 12-year, 15-year, and 18-year aged bottles before finishing with the Glenfiddich Gran Reserva, which is aged for 21 years in old rum casks from the Caribbean.

3. Glenlivet Distillery

Best Distilleries in Scotland: Glenlivet Distillery

Another classic Speyside distillery is the Glenlivet Distillery , where Scotch whisky has been produced going back as far as 1822. Intriguingly, the distillery itself was founded in 1824, but George Smith, the founder, had been distilling his whisky illicitly in the Livet Valley for at least two years prior to this.

Legend has it King George IV tried the illicit whisky, loved it. When the government rules changed to allow more liberal distillation, Glenlivet Distillery instantly shot to fame once they could legally produce their excellent whisky.

Scotland Distilleries to try: Glenlivet Distillery

You’ll be able to delve into this fascinating history with a tour of the Glenlivet Distillery, which is located in Ballindalloch, close to the River Spey in Moray. You’ll love the remote, rural location in the midst of a beautiful Scottish glen, and you’ll love tasting the single malts, the oldest of which have been aged for decades.

4. Highland Park Whisky Distillery

Fun Distilleries in Scotland: Highland Park Whisky Distillery

One of the best Scottish distilleries is found in one of the country’s most remote and difficult-to-reach destinations. The Highland Park Whisky Distillery is the most northerly distillery in Scotland, and you’ll need to make your way all the way to Kirkwall, on the island of Orkney, to enjoy a dram of this whisky at its source.

Highland Park Whisky Distillery dates back to 1798, and the master distillers draw on this long history, as well as the wild, untamable nature of Orkney, to produce a truly distinct array of whiskies. You might be intrigued to discover that the original distillery established here was an illicit one, but then again, given Orkney’s remote location (it’s closer to Norway than to London!), the islanders here have always done things their own way.

Cool Distilleries in Scotland: Highland Park Whisky Distillery

The whiskies here are single malt, and they are produced using barley that’s slowly smoked over peat that’s 4,000 years old (we did say this was a historic distillery). This unusual, ancient peat gives Highland Park’s whisky a characteristic taste and aroma, which few single malts from the mainland can ever match.

5. Laphroaig Distillery

What Distilleries to try in Scotland: Laphroaig Distillery

Islay is highly regarded for its single malt whisky, and if you’re looking for Islay distilleries, there are as many as nine different distilleries producing high-quality products across the island! Islay whisky has a characteristically peaty, smoky flavor, and no other Islay whisky enshrines this more than Laphroaig.

The Laphroaig Distillery is one of the best whisky distilleries in Scotland (not just on Islay!), and we know you’re going to love exploring their visitors center and learning about the history and production process.

Scotland Distilleries to try: Laphroaig Distillery

The distillery was founded in 1815 by members of Clan Donald, and they made use of the abundance of peat on Islay to smoke the barley before distillation. This is where that unique peaty aroma comes from, and the tradition continues today, with much of the peat and barley being locally sourced from Islay and smoked on-site.

The most popular Laphroaig is aged for at least 10 years, but there are many much older bottles available too. Make your way to Islay, and you can take a tour of the distillery, learning the process from the master distillers before trying the impressive range of peaty whiskies in an expert-led tasting session. If you only have time for one Islay distillery tour, this is the one!

6. Auchentoshan Distillery

Must Visit Distilleries in Scotland: Auchentoshan Distillery

You’ll find the Auchentoshan Distillery in the Glaswegian suburbs, next to the banks of the River Clyde in the Kilpatricks Hills to the west of the city. It’s a beautiful yet convenient location for a distillery, and it’s perfect for anyone who only has fleeting time to explore Scotland!

But convenience isn’t the only reason to visit because the Auchentoshan Distillery has whisky to rival any highland single malt or peaty barrel of island brew. Auchentoshan is very different from its rivals, too, given that this whisky is known for its sweeter aromas and flavors rather than the peaty, boggy, smoky whiskies found elsewhere.

The Auchentoshan Distillery is historic, too, being founded back in 1823. They’ve always had a unique approach to whisky distillation, and the unusual overtones are in part the result of a triple distillation process that few other whisky producers employ. Take a tour, enjoy a few tastings, and see what the Auchentoshan fuss is all about during your trip to Glasgow!

7. The Clydeside Distillery

Unique Distilleries in Scotland: Clydeside Distillery

It’s the Highland and island distilleries that take all the glory and fame when it comes to scotch, but did you know that some of the best whisky in Scotland is produced in Glasgow ?

This unique Scottish distillery overlooks the old Queens Docks in Clydeside, Glasgow, where whisky from Scotland was once exported around the globe. The distillery is located within the former Pump House Building, which supplied the necessary power to operate the docks during the Victorian era.

Best Distilleries in Scotland: Clydeside Distillery

The Clydeside Distillery , though, is relatively new to the whisky game. They only opened in 2017, but rest assured, the owners and distillers draw upon generations of whisky distillation experience. The owners previously owned Auchentoshan Distillery, Bowmore, and Glen Garioch Distilleries and they were inspired to create a dedicated single malt distillery (The Clydeside Distillery) that could return Glasgow to its former whisky-distilling glory.

The owners’ family were former whisky brokers, and they worked here at Clydeside in days past, forging a whisky trading empire. Now, their descendants are forging a new single malt empire in Scotland’s most innovative and exciting city. You can learn more about the unique story and regeneration project on a tour of The Clydeside Distillery, which obviously includes plenty of tastings.

8. Ben Nevis Distillery

What Distilleries to try in Scotland: Ben Nevis Distillery

Travel to Fort William, the gateway to the Scottish Highlands, and you can hike to the summit of the tallest mountain in Britain. Looming over the town is Ben Nevis, which rises to a height of 1,345 meters.

On your way down the mountain, you can stop off at the Ben Nevis Distillery , which sits in the shadow of this iconic natural attraction. Alternatively, if you’re not in the mood for a long hike to the summit, why not spend the day tasting the excellent whisky instead of climbing a mountain?

This is one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries, with a distinguished history dating back to 1825 when it was founded by “Long John” McDonald, a descendent of rulers of the old Highland clans. The whisky was prepared using fresh water from the mountains, a tradition that continues to this day.

The Ben Nevis Distillery produces a single malt whisky that typically is aged for 10 years. You can learn more at the distillery’s visitors center, where of course, you can also try their best whisky.

9. Jura Distillery

Scotland Distilleries to try: Jura Distillery

The Inner Hebrides is home to many distilleries, but one of the most famous is the Jura Distillery . You’ll find the distillery on the island of Jura, which for most of the year, has a permanent population of less than 200, although numbers swell in the summer when the tourists arrive from the mainland.

This isolation has always given Jura whisky a certain allure, and it’s an allure that’s matched by the whisky’s unique island-inspired flavors. Jura whiskies can be peaty, non-peaty, smoky, and even spicy, and there are a number of different varieties that you’ll need to try when you visit the distillery.

Actually reaching the Jura Distillery is all part of the experience, with the island being notoriously difficult to travel to, even when the waves are calm and the summer ferries are running. In the summer, you’ll first need to travel to Tayvallich, from where you can catch the community ferry. If that ferry isn’t running, you’ll need to travel to the island of Islay, then onto Jura.

It’s well worth it to experience one of Scotland’s best and oldest whiskies, with the Jura Distillery having a long history dating back to 1810.

10. Talisker Distillery

Cool Distilleries in Scotland: Talisker Distillery

The Isle of Skye is one of Scotland’s most popular destinations. It’s an almost mythical island where you can hike to spectacular, natural chimney stacks and swim in Fairy Pools. But as beautiful as the island is, the real reason you’re here is for the Isle of Skye whisky at Talisker.

The fabled Talisker Distillery is the Isle of Skye’s oldest distillery, with a history that can be traced back to the 1830s. The distinctive Talisker whisky with its peaty flavors is produced using much the same process as the founders, Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill, used almost 200 years ago. The stills are replicas of the originals, and although the distillery was destroyed by a fire in 1960, it was restored as faithfully as possible.

Fun Distilleries in Scotland: Talisker Distillery

The Talisker Distillery produces a number of different malts, with the classic 10-year-aged being the most popular (and it’s won awards). If you visit the distillery, you’ll be able to tour through the old production areas and see the impressive vaults, where much older barrels (some aged 35 years) are kept in the cool.

11. Cardhu Distillery

Best Distilleries in Scotland: Cardhu Distillery

If you love a dram of whisky with a side of history, then you have to visit the Cardhu Distillery in Moray. This is one of Scotland’s most fascinating whisky stories, and unlike many other distilleries, this narrative is dominated by women.

The Cardhu Distillery was founded by whisky smuggling duo Helen and John Cumming in 1824. As the story goes, Helen would produce whisky, run the distillery, and sell the bottles from their farmhouse – all while avoiding the police. Their daughter, Elizabeth, took over the family business (by now, it was a legitimate whisky producer) and greatly expanded their production levels.

Cool Distilleries in Scotland: Cardhu Distillery

In 1893, they were bought out by Johnnie Walker, who continues to own the distillery today. Cardhu Whisky remains a distinct product, although you may recognize the aromas if you’re a Johnnie Walker fan because Cardhu is one of the whiskies used in classic Johnnie Walker blends!

You can learn about this fascinating past on a distillery tour before sampling a few wee drams of the Cardhu Distillery’s excellent Speyside single malt whiskies, which are aged from 12 to 18 years.

12. Glenmorangie Distillery

Must Visit Distilleries in Scotland: Glenmorangie Distillery

Up north in Ross-shire, they know how to make an excellent whisky, and nowhere else is quite so famous as the Glenmorangie Distillery .

This is highland distillation at its finest. The Glenmorangie Distillery believes that their whisky has been produced using a similar recipe since as early as the 1730s, when the first recorded distillery was established on the Morangie Farm. They still use the same Tarlogie Spring, located up in the hills, as a source of freshwater for the distillation process today.

Fun Distilleries in Scotland: Glenmorangie Distillery

Glenmorangie is classified as a single malt whisky, and uniquely, the copper stills where the whisky is produced are the tallest such stills to be found anywhere in Scotland. The distillery recently constructed a 20-meter-high, glass-covered still named the “Lighthouse,” as it aims to be at the forefront of distillation for many years to come.

The Glenmorangie Distillery is an impressive sight indeed, where modern architecture blends with 18th-century stone walls. You can see it all in person when you take a tour of the distillery, finished off with, of course, a tasting that includes a few wee drams of their signature 18- and 25-year whiskies.

13. Old Pulteney Distillery

The small, coastal town of Wick lies just 15 miles to the south of John O’Groats, the most northerly point in mainland Britain. That makes the Old Pulteney Distillery one of the most northerly (and windswept) in Scotland, and we know you’re going to love venturing here in search of their famous “maritime malt.”

Old Pulteney Whisky has been shaped by the sea salt and sea spray from the rough North Seas that whips through Wick, and for much of its long history, this was one of the most inaccessible places on the mainland. You don’t need to arrive here by boat as you did when the distillery was first founded in 1826, but you will feel the keen sense of isolation that lingers throughout the town as you head for a tasting.

Old Pulteney whiskies are characterized by their salty, almost briny aromas, and the taste of this malt really is unique. The classic 12 years aged whisky is a beautiful whisky, but you can step it up with a dram of the 15 years, 18 years, and much rarer 25-year-aged barrels.

14. Wolfburn Distillery

Scotland Distilleries to try: Wolfburn Distillery

If you’d love to visit the most northerly distillery on the mainland (not counting the Orkney Islands further to the north!), then you need to take a trip to the Wolfburn Distillery in Thurso.

The Wolfburn Distillery first opened in 1821 and soon became known for its smooth blends distilled at the end of Britain. But the distillery was forced to close in the 1860s, and for over a century and a half, Wolfburn Whisky was all but forgotten.

Must Visit Distilleries in Scotland: Wolfburn Distillery

But in 2013, the distillery was resurrected, and the name and brand were brought back to life in Thurso. The distillers at Old Pulteney weren’t too happy, though, as they could no longer claim to be the most northerly distillery on the mainland!

Wolfburn Whisky has more to its name than its location, though. True to their, at one point, lost heritage, the distillery takes a slow, methodical approach to distillation. Everything here is done by hand, including the bottling, and you’ll appreciate every sip when you see how much work and expertise goes into the process during your distillery tour.

15. The Isle of Harris Distillery

Best Distilleries in Scotland: Isle of Harris Distillery

The Isle of Harris Distillery is the most unusual addition to our list of the best distilleries to visit in Scotland because their most famous product isn’t whisky, but gin. Yes, gin is distilled in Scotland, too (not just whisky!), and if you make your way to Tarbert on the remote Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, you can see how it’s done!

The Isle of Harris Distillery only opened in 2015, but its products draw on centuries of community, culture, and history on the island. The distillery was founded not just as a way to produce a delectable bottle of gin but to save the local islander community, which was slowly declining as the younger generations left due to a lack of work in the isolated region.

Unique Distilleries in Scotland: Isle of Harris Distillery

The distillery now provides many locals with an opportunity to stay and also provides visitors with a fascinating tour through the gin distillation process.

Isle of Harris gin is prepared using local seaweed, as well as other (more traditional) gin botanicals, including junipers and coriander. Every bottle is labeled by hand and quality checked by the master gin makers, so you can rest assured that this unique gin is of the finest quality.

If you are more of a whisky drinker, though, then don’t worry because the Isle of Harris Distillery also has you covered. While gin is their most famous product, they do also distill a single malt whisky named The Hearach .

There you have it! The 15 best Scottish distilleries to visit in Scotland. What’s your favorite distillery in Scotland?

Edinburgh has a long and rich history, but the city has recently come back into the fore as a top class whisky tourism destination. Join us on a full day or half day tour of Scotland’s capital where you’ll sample the best whisky around.

local whisky tour

Edinburgh is a modern and contemporary city, however it has fascinating history and many spirit drinks are a big part in Edinburgh’s growth to one of the most iconic cities in Europe. There are records of whisky being produced in Edinburgh as far back as 1505 with the Guild of Barbers and Surgeons being provided the only licence for distilling whisky in Edinburgh by James IV of Scotland.

Fast forward to 1777 and there were eight licensed stills in Edinburgh, however, as illegal distilling was common practice at the time, there were estimated to be around four hundred illicit stills.

Currently, there are three single malt distilleries in Edinburgh and we have selected Glenkinchie and Holyrood distillery as two stops on your Edinburgh whisky tour. Our selections for your tutored tastings include, but are not limited to the Scotch malt whisky society and Usquabe bar and larder.

Lunch and whisky tasting

12:00pm – 2:00pm.

Our usual stop for lunch and a tutored tasting is the Scottish Malt Whisky Society. The society was formed in 1983 by a group of unconventional ‘water of life’ experts.  Quite different from a distillery tasting, the society exists to present their selected single cask whisky in its purest form, put flavour above all else, while coming up with some very unusual names for each of their bottles. Their motto: “We’re united and constant in our passion – to share the world’s best whiskies, to bring them to life, and to make you proud to belong to the world’s most colourful whisky club.” Due to the connections we have at the society , we can arrange for you or your group to be signed in for a great tasting experience.

Our final stop for your Edinburgh whisky tour is the newly built Holyrood distillery. Holyrood is all about flavour and having a memorable and sensory experience. Itinerary same as outlined above that we stick to. However, due to factors out-with our control, it’s very rare that we may have to use other distilleries and places for lunch nearby to Edinburgh. This will be communicated in advance and doesn’t affect the quality of experience.

Maggie’s Farm Rum, Strip District On Black Friday in 2013, Allegheny Distilling sold its inaugural bottle of Maggie’s Farm White Rum, Pennsylvania’s first commercially available craft rum since Prohibition. It’s been quite a colorful journey ever since. There’s a variety of rum to choose from (white, dark, spiced, pineapple, Queen’s Share, single-barrel) and tasty liqueurs to complement them. The public can tour the distillery and enjoy a cocktail Wednesday through Sunday in their cool space in the Strip. The sweet smell of raw cane sugar is almost as intoxicating as the booze it creates.

Whisky distilleries in Aberdeenshire  are bottling the essence of our land into iconic blends loved the world over.

In the heart of the Cairngorms National Park try Royal Lochnagar which was favoured by Queen Victoria so much it was bestowed a Royal Warrant. Then there’s Glenglassaugh Distillery located on the Banffshire coast where its fans say you can taste the sea and further inland find GlenDronach Distillery , outside Huntly where the finest sherried malts have been created for over 200 years.

You can even take a whisky inspired trip to discover “ The Secret Malts of Aberdeenshire ”, produced by a cluster of ancient distilleries dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Whilst getting up close to the traditional skills of the distilling process, explore the rural settings of picturesque Aberdeenshire villages , wooded hills, rolling fields and tranquil beach bays where these distilleries are nestled amongst.

And if you can’t decide on who wants to be driver, no one has to miss out on tasting at each distillery you visit with our local tour guides and tours creating bespoke tours to ensure you see (and taste) the best of the region.

Whether you like your whisky neat, on the rocks or mixed up into a cocktail form our local bars and restaurants will keep you right with recommendations of how best to taste our local whisky blends. Step beneath the cobbles of Belmont Street to the underground tavern of The Tippling House where you can book tasting sessions to find your perfect local blend.

Movie fans will even be pleased to know that Whisky Galore (2017) was filmed in Aberdeenshire taking advantage of the stunning seaside towns of Portsoy and Pennan .

Safe to say, there’s plenty to cheers to while on a whisky tour of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

Customer testimonials.

Thank you McLean Scotland for creating and delivering the Tour of a Lifetime!!

I HIGHLY and STRONGLY recommend this company for your Scotch tour!!

This comment might seem strange, but to be honest, we didn’t really believe the quote we got for Liz and Paul. It was around 5-6k. We actually replied, 5k per person, right? We were surprised to find that was the total. The going rate for a week(ish) tour with big box (non-bespoke) companies in 2021 were 3-4k per person. If the price seems too low, it might raise red flags. It did with us, which is why we asked Liz and Paul to video chat to make sure it was real! I’m not suggesting that you jack up prices, but maybe address your pricing philosophy face up?

“We believe the wonders of Scotland should be experienced by all, which is why we carefully design tours to meet every budget. Please don’t compare us to the big tour companies. We have the flexibility to offer very competitively priced customized tours at reasonable prices that will create lasting memories."

Hi Paul. Back in Sweden and delighted to find my wonderful lab still recognises me (as does my wife). I think we had a brilliant tour, in fact the best ever, and as always it's a pleasure being on the roads with you. Apart from being a great companion, you share so much about Scottish history and culture which you know I'm always keen to learn more about.

I liked in particular the scenery going from Ballachulish to Tyndrum in Glencoe – a road I'd never travelled before. The best views I've ever had in Scotland. I think we have a solid plan for next year so let´s keep in touch about that.

First time we used MCLEANSCOTLAND.  They were honest about what we would be able to see. It truly was a vacation of a lifetime. It was everything we dreamed about! And we saw as much of Scotland that we could possibly fit in 10 days. Forward five years – we decided to do a whisky tour with them.

They did all the driving, so many distilleries, so many laughs, drank so much whisky and had the time of our lives. Our whole trip was truly magical!  There are not enough stars to give them rating they deserve.

MCLEANSCOTLAND are an absolute joy to communicate with. Professional, knowledgeable, courteous, friendly, and awesome with communication. The way they communicate is vastly different from the other 7 companies that I contacted for the tour. The tour schedule was WOW!! So detailed, well planned, organised and thought out.

You guys truly listened and tried your hardest to schedule events tailored to our wants and it definitely showed! Once again, totally different from the 7 other companies I contacted. The price was great! You scheduled an incredible tour to the budget that I gave.

Your long experience was evident and we very much enjoyed stories about Scotland such as details about the clans and other information he provided along the way. One hotel you chose was fantastic for us. Quirky and fun, the host seemed very energetic. The dining room and bar were surprisingly busy for mid-week and the food was excellent. It was nice to take a bit of a rest in such a peaceful place and we stood in a field looking at stars for a good hour. Breakfast was excellent. We loved every bit of Islay.  Our walk on the beach was wonderful. We were happy to catch the standing stones on the mainland, definitely worth the stop at least for us. After switching drivers we were able to make a detour to the Glen Coe area and stopped at a pull-in to take some pictures...a highlight of the trip for us...it was quite impressive.  Overall, we had an absolutely incredible time and made a ton of new memories. I would write more about it how wonderful it was, but I have to be off to work now!!! Thanks again, and we really are excited about our next trip...which would have to include the Isle of Skye.
