8 Best Puerto Rico all inclusive resorts for Couples

Wyndham grand rio mar beach resort and spa.

First up is the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Beach Resort and Spa. To start with the basics, this elegant resort offers an array of room sizes to fit all budgets. But that’s where the basics end! This resort offers a variety of “room views”, including ocean, rainforest, pool, or resort.

They also offer junior suites, family suites, and jumbo suites, for those with their own entourage. There are promotions and packages available, which include such items as: a free night stay with minimum nights met, a food and beverage credit to a local restaurant, discounts on purchases at stores or restaurants on property, a breakfast in bed options, their coveted “Stay In Love” or “Pure Bliss” spa packages, room rate discounts for AAA and AARP members, as well as Wyndham member rewards.

If you’re into golf, they’ve got two lush courses; one at the ocean, and another at the river. Looking for the ideal destination wedding ? Their ocean view, or garden view matrimony locales will astonish all in attendance, and their packages can help you keep your sanity, by assisting you with all the details.

They have an incredible pool with cabana rentals, a tennis court, and an exciting casino, for when you’re feeling lucky! For those feeling tense, try out their reposeful spa treatments, such as facials, body wraps, or their relaxation room.

Additionally, they have full salon treatments too, like manicures, and hair styling. If that isn’t enough, they also have numerous tours to choose from, like a rainforest tour, snorkeling with sea life, and horseback riding near the beach. And let us not forget the incredible food, from ten phenomenal restaurants on the property, or even in your own hotel room!

You also might like s’mores by the fire pit, yoga, rum tasting, or even, feeding a local iguana. Just watch your fingers on items one and four. If you’re desperate enough to get out of town, they also have meeting rooms available, so you can get a two-fer for your troubles!

Because the remodel of this hotel took place right before COVID-19 brought the world to a  halt, operations and reservations may be easier to get now, than in the future. You have the opportunity to get in before others get back to traveling again!

Best All Inclusive Resorts in Puerto Rico

Las Casitas Village

When you think of the colorful world of the Caribbean, you might just be thinking of Las Casitas Village! Emerald green golf course, spectacular azure sky with white clouds, a palette of colorful casitas, and magenta bougainvillea, just to name a few stand-outs.

Perched more than three hundred feet above the ocean, this exclusive, all ability access village, feels more like home, than a hotel. Each of the one, two, and three bedroom villas is equipped with a state of the art kitchen, for those who love to cook, and has the choice of ocean, or mountain view. But that’s just the beginning of this exploit!

You’ll find countless on-site amenities at this exquisite locale. For those on vacation or business, those amenities including: a swim-up bar, mini-bar, and pool-side drink service;  concierge, butler, laundry and dry cleaning services; rental car service desk, business center and internet access; meeting/conference rooms, and fitness center; currency exchange and safety deposit boxes; barber shop and beauty salon.

The longer you’re there, the more you’ll discover. Even without trekking out to sea for a water sport, or into the rainforest for zip-lining, you’ll become engrossed with the sheer beauty of the land. With an abundance of wildlife, from sea turtles to iguanas, as well as flora and fauna, found in a rainbow of vibrant colors, you’ll find your shoulders relaxing as you become more at one with the world. Some would say that there’s no better place to heal, than the tropical climate, like in Puerto Rico.

Las Casitas Village

Wyndham Garden at Palmas Del Mar

If you’re seeking a contemporary spot to relax, look no further than the Wyndham Garden at Palmas Del Mar. This bright an airy hotel has everything you need for a vacation of relaxation. When you’re hungry, check out Trova Narrative Cuisine, the restaurant rooted in a seasonal menu, with historical storytelling throughout your meal.

Or maybe you’re in the mood for a Japanese flare, through sushi and hand rolls, created from locally caught seafood, at Kintsugi. But perhaps you’re just interested in a few nibbles and a touch of imbibing. If so, catch the exotic flavors of tapas and cocktails, made with care, at Botica. For more relaxed dining, try the Costa Pool Bar, or some famous island coffee, at Cafe 1736. No matter what you choose, you’ll be satisfied with the tried and true flavors of your choice.

Once your hunger and thirst have been sated, you’ll be ready to explore a bit. Luckily, there are plenty of activities to keep you happy. The obvious choice the the beach. Who doesn’t love a little sand and surf? Grab the sunscreen, and hit the salty shores for some fun in the sun. Want a bit more structured activity? This resort has access to not one, but two, world-class golf courses.

Hit the back nine, and be back for dinner! Still need more exercise? Check out the local hiking trails at the  Pterocarpus forest. You can commune with nature, get away from the hustle and bustle of the modern world, and become friendly (although, not too friendly) with local wildlife. There’s also tennis, a family and adult only pool, and a fitness center.

If you’re interested in enjoying company with horses, there’s an equestrian center. For those who want to go a bit fancier, check out the Yacht Club and Marina, where you can rent a boat for the day. If you’d like to explore the island a bit, but getting around is a bit challenging, you can rent a golf cart! Let us not forget one of the most classic pass times- shopping! And so you don’t have to lug those packages all the way home, the resort has a shipping service. If you choose to rent a car, your options open up, including a short fifteen minute car ride to the Humacao Nature Reserve.

One of the best puerto rico all inclusive resorts.

Dorado Beach, a Ritz Carlton Reserve

The newly renovated Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, has truly outdone itself and is definitely one of the best all inclusive resorts in puerto rico.

The gilded location name gives meaning to the spectacular all around. The abundance of nature abounds, and brings you into a comfortable embrace, upon arrival. So impressive are every space you walk through, that you almost feel like you’ve walked onto a movie set. Rich colors, and fabrics excite the senses, as the glories of nature engage your eyes.

Let’s start by mentioning an amazing amenity, provided by the resort, at no cost: a forty-five minute photo-shoot! That’s right, Elemento, the resort’s studio, will professionally photograph your vacation, anywhere on the resort grounds. But this is just the start of the perks.

This location also provides complimentary bicycles, and has numerous bike paths around the property. It’s a great way to see everything, but leave energy for all of the other activities! And those other activities are plentiful. If you’re staying on property, there’s the spa, with indoor and outdoor treatments, from healing hands massages, to powerful custom botanical concoctions, to scrubs and baths. They have two fitness centers: the Reserve Fitness Center is built into the feeling of the locale, offering lots of light, and even yoga. The second offers a more traditional interpretation of a fitness center, providing classic fitness apparatus and boasts a tennis court, as well.

If you’re searching to connect with land, sea, or air, this resort has you covered. They offer everything from sailing and windsurfing, to cave exploration and zip-lining, to team building and helicopter experiences.

Hungry for something more? Try one of their exquisite on-site restaurants, such as the upscale COA, or the more down-to-earth Encanto Beach Club and Grill or Posi+ivo Sand Bar. Perhaps you’d like to grab something quick at the La Cocina Gourmet, plus something from the shelves for later. Or you could go all out and try the hands-on cooking class and meal, at the Culinary Center.

Lastly, when you choose to venture outside of the property, you’ll find no shortage of engaging activities, from local flavors of coffee and rum, and second-to-none architecture, to historical locations, sacred archaeology, and inviting natural wonders.

Parador Costa del Mar

If you’re looking for an “Earth Responsible” resort, then you need to check out Parador Costa del Mar. This location created their very own green team , before it was even in style. They’ve even been awarded the highly coveted, “Green Suites Green Hotel Certification”, and do their best to maintain an environmentally friendly atmosphere. While the list of ways they accomplish this is long, you can find comfort in knowing that they are on the cutting edge of green habits, for the property as a whole, and within individual hotel rooms.

While this resort may not be quite as glamorous as its local counterparts, it is likely the best hotel in terms of value. Their All Inclusive Package includes all meals, with tip and room tax, and the parking is free. The resort is small, relieving you of the stress generally associated with unmet needs, and ordering wait times.

On-site, you’ll find a sparkling clean pool, overlooking the teal colored Caribbean Sea. The all ability access area combines swimming, with a small children’s play area. Just outside your hotel room, is a covered, and simple spot to enjoy the ocean and palm tree view, or relax with a good book. You have your choice of room service, or joining the other guests in the informal hotel restaurant. When you need some down time, you can relax in one of the hammocks set up on property, check out the rainforest trails, or walk down to the beach.

Just a short distance from Parador Costa del Mar, is the full service restaurant, for when you want a heartier meal. And around local town of Yabucoa, otherwise known as “The City of Sugar” for it’s sugarcane plantations, you’ll find a rich local history, new and exciting flavors, and shops for every interest. With every new stop, you’ll find something fresh to enjoy, whether it’s music, or an interesting cocktail.

Parador Palmas de Lucia

One of the sister sites in the Tropical Inns hotel family, Parador Palmas de Lucia offers a delightfully colorful scenery, made with nature in mind. Tamed landscape, ocean views, and exciting, yet old world appeal, meet in the middle of this resort.  The bold mosaic mural above their sparking pool, offers a glimpse into the culture. It uses images of their country’s flag, typical PR views of sea and palm trees, and a nod to the important work of The Puerto Rican parrot recovery program, for their efforts to get parrots off of the endangered species list. Best of all, this locale is also a green hotel.

With roughly double the rooms of her sister property, Parador Palmas de Lucia has more to explore. Their extra large, Tetris shaped pool, comes with streaming water, and plenty of pool side room to take in the sun. You’ll also find both a volleyball court, and a basketball court to play with new friends. Or you can simply hang out on one of their many hammocks across the property.

With numerous options available withing a short distance, you can visit the coastline just outside of the property, or head the other direction to visit the luscious forest. For even more choices, go to downtown Yabucoa for a variety of shops, restaurants, and excursions.

You can choose to be served meals in-room, or sit inside or outside, at their on-site restaurant. It offers vegetarian choices, locally sourced seafood, customary flavors of the Caribbean, and daily specials.

Depending on the needs and budget of your vacation, you can’t go wrong with the all-inclusive package at this resort. There are enough things to do on-site, that you’d never need to leave the property, but if you wanted more adventure, there are plenty of affordable ventures just a bit down the road.

parador palmas

Parador Guanica

When you think of Parador Guanica 1929, the first words you’ll think of are: Old World Charm! This hotel is nearly 100 years old, is oozing with personality, and can boost that it hosted the American President Roosevelt! And who would be enthralled with the sheer historical representation of such a landmark, whose walls have stood through many changes across time. This property is part of the prestigious Touristic Alliance , in which all properties keep to current tourism trends for maximum benefits to both trade, and tourists alike.

Take a step back in time, and enjoy the friendly staff, there for your every need. Beginning with the water fountain at the entrance,  you can find simple joys in just wandering the age-old property, and enjoying the richness of nature. Or hang out on the veranda, and watch the sunset, as the birds settle in for the night.

During your stay, you’ll enjoy Caribbean Gastronomy to your heart’s delight. Their in-house restaurant offers a variety of choices for its all-inclusive guests. Both traditional Caribbean cuisine, and standard American fare are available. As well as simple meals, such as hamburgers, to more authentic Puerto Rican food, like Mofongo. Regardless of your choice, you’ll be certain to have a happy tummy at the end.

For those looking to stay close by, there’s a gym, swimming pool, pool bar, and playground for the kids (big and small). Just a few minutes away, you’ll find the Guanica Dry Forest (the only one of its kind in the Caribbean), the sunflower farm, the Lighthouse and Fort Capron ruins. A bit further still, are the Murals of Guanica, the pier and local fishing town, kiosks, night spots, and numerous beach-fronts, including (we kid you not) Gilligan’s Island.

This non-smoking resort is available for weddings, events, and corporate meetings, for a large number of guests. They also note that their hotel characteristic includes LGBTTIQ identity, indicating that all guests should feel welcome. With personalized service, a homey atmosphere, and all the relaxation or adventures you might want, this resort should be on your radar.

Parador-Guanica-1929

Tropical Inns Puerto Rico

Last, but not least, is a final Tropical Inns Puerto Rico resort to consider: Parador MaunaCaribe. Perhaps the most lush and swanky property of the chain mentioned on this list, the MaunaCaribe combines value, with a more upscale feel. Whether you’re traveling as a family, couple, friends, or for a group event, you’ll find everything you need to make the trip a success.

The most notable attraction of the property is the infinity pool, and bar. The appealing trick of the mind gives you the feeling that you’re swimming in the warm Caribbean waters, without even having to leave the resort! And for those adults who like to indulge in libations, they’re available with the flick of a hand, at the poolside bar. The pool is open to both adults and children.

A couple of other amenities on-site are the fitness center, which offers the basics for a quick cardio and weightlifting workout; a game room, which offers the latest video games available, and an XBox 360 with kinetic capability, for those serious about their video games! They also have a large, air-conditioned, meeting space, with a capacity up to 100 attendees, for any type of function.

As with all resorts in this chain, they offer free high speed internet, free parking, daily maid service, in-room microwave, refrigerator, and complimentary toiletries. Let’s not forget their 80 seat restaurant, overlooking the infinity pool, which serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner, Caribbean style. They have both traditional local dishes, as well as an array of seafood choices. There are also a few other restaurants less than a mile away. This is also the property in the chain which allows pets under a certain weight, to stay with you.

A memorable honeymoon in Puerto Rico is a dream come true, and planning your budget is a crucial part of the journey. Let’s break down the average cost for a one-week romantic getaway in this tropical paradise.

Airfare costs can vary depending on your departure location and the time of year you travel. On average, round-trip flights from the continental United States to Puerto Rico can range from $300 to $800 per person. Booking in advance and keeping an eye out for deals or promotions can help you find more budget-friendly options.

Puerto Rico offers a wide range of accommodations to suit different preferences and budgets. On average, a night’s stay in a mid-range hotel or a cozy boutique inn can cost around $150 to $250. For a one-week stay, you might expect to spend approximately $1,050 to $1,750. Luxurious resorts and upscale hotels may come at a higher price point, while budget options like guesthouses or hostels can help you save.

Daily Expenses

Your daily expenses in Puerto Rico will cover meals, transportation, activities, and any additional indulgences. On average, you can allocate about $100 to $150 per day per person. This includes meals at local restaurants (budgeting $20-40 per meal), transportation (public transportation or rental car), and activities like guided tours, beach excursions, and exploring historical sites.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Rico

The best time for a Puerto Rico honeymoon extends beyond just the weather. While the weather is certainly a crucial factor, there are other considerations that can enhance your experience. Let’s explore the optimal time and additional aspects to keep in mind for your romantic getaway.

The peak tourist season in Puerto Rico typically falls between December and April , offering pleasant temperatures and lower chances of rain. This is an excellent time for honeymooners seeking sunny days and warm beach weather.

2. Hurricane Season

Puerto Rico’s hurricane season officially runs from June to November. While the likelihood of a major storm affecting your plans is relatively low, it’s wise to monitor weather forecasts and consider travel insurance to have peace of mind.

3. Crowds and Prices

Peak tourist season (December to April) means larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodations and activities. If you prefer a quieter, more budget-friendly experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of May and November . You’ll enjoy pleasant weather and fewer tourists.

4. Local Festivals and Events

Puerto Rico hosts various cultural festivals and events throughout the year. Timing your visit to coincide with events like the San Sebastián Street Festival (January), the Ponce Carnival (February), or the Casals Festival (February-March) can add a vibrant and unique dimension to your honeymoon.

5. Whales and Wildlife

From January to March , the waters around Puerto Rico become a hub for whale watching as humpback whales migrate through the area. Consider this window if you’re interested in witnessing these majestic creatures.

6. Cultural Experiences

To fully appreciate Puerto Rico’s rich culture and history, plan your visit around holidays like Three Kings’ Day (January 6) and the San Juan Bautista Day Parade (June 24). These celebrations offer insight into the island’s traditions and customs.

7. Accessibility to Attractions

Certain attractions or activities may have specific seasonal availability. For example, if you’re keen on exploring the bioluminescent bays, like Mosquito Bay in Vieques, it’s advisable to check the moon phase, as the experience is best enjoyed during darker nights.

8. Local Events and Entertainment

Puerto Rico boasts a vibrant nightlife scene, with local music, dance, and entertainment. Checking out local events, concerts, and dance performances can add a touch of romance and excitement to your honeymoon evenings.

Choosing the best time for your Puerto Rico honeymoon involves a balance of weather, crowd preferences, budget considerations, and unique experiences.

Puerto Rico enjoys a tropical climate, making it a year-round destination with warm temperatures and pleasant conditions. The weather can vary slightly depending on the season:

High Season (December to April)

This is the most popular time for tourists to visit Puerto Rico due to the comfortable weather. The temperatures range from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (24-29°C), with lower humidity and minimal rainfall. It’s a great time for outdoor activities and beach relaxation.

Shoulder Seasons (May and November)

These months offer a transition between the high and low seasons. While there may be some scattered showers, the weather is still generally pleasant, with temperatures in the mid-80s Fahrenheit (around 29°C).

Hurricane Season (June to November)

Puerto Rico is at risk of hurricanes during this period. While the likelihood of a direct hit is relatively low, it’s wise to stay informed about weather forecasts if you plan to visit during these months. Rainfall and humidity levels increase, and temperatures remain in the mid-80s Fahrenheit (around 29°C).

Low Season (July to October)

This period sees higher humidity, occasional heavy rain showers, and the possibility of tropical storms. While it’s the least crowded time for tourists, some attractions and accommodations may have reduced availability.

It’s important to note that even during the rainy season, the rain showers are often brief and followed by sunshine. Puerto Rico’s diverse microclimates mean that weather conditions can vary between regions, so it’s a good idea to check the specific forecast for your Puerto Rico honeymoon.

Another island day! Take the early ferry from Vieques back to Ceiba, then catch the 10:30 AM ferry to Culebra ($2.25 one-way).

Upon arrival, rent snorkel gear from Culebra Divers ($10 per day) and take a water taxi to Culebrita ($50 round trip). Snorkel in the calm waters around this tiny, uninhabited island.

For lunch, head back to Culebra’s main town and try Zaco’s Tacos. Their fish tacos are amazing and cost about $12 for two.

Spend your afternoon at Flamenco Beach, often rated one of the best beaches in the world. Relax on the white sand, swim in the turquoise water, and check out the famous tank murals.

For your last night, enjoy a beachfront dinner at Susie’s Restaurant. Their lobster is a must-try. Dinner will cost about $40-50 per person.

Day 7: Last-Day Fun in San Juan

For your final day in this Puerto Rico itinerary, we’re back in San Juan. Start with breakfast at Café Cuatro Sombras in Old San Juan. Their coffee is locally grown and roasted. Breakfast will cost about $10-12.

Spend your morning doing some last-minute shopping in Old San Juan. Check out The Butterfly People for beautiful art made with real butterflies or Puerto Rican Art & Crafts for local handicrafts.

For lunch, join Spoon Food Tours for their Old San Juan Walk & Taste Tour ($89). It’s a great way to try a variety of local foods and learn about Puerto Rican cuisine.

In the afternoon, visit the Bacardí Rum Factory. The historical tour costs $15 and includes a welcome cocktail.

End your Puerto Rico adventure with a farewell dinner at 1919 Restaurant in the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel. It’s one of the best restaurants on the island, with a menu that showcases local ingredients. Expect to spend about $100-150 per person, but it’s worth it for a special last night.

This 7-day Puerto Rico itinerary gives you a comprehensive island experience, from city life to nature adventures and beach relaxation.

Puerto Rico Itinerary for Couples: Romantic Getaway

Looking for a romantic escape with your special someone? Puerto Rico’s got you covered! This 5-day itinerary is perfect for couples who want to mix relaxation, adventure, and romance.

Day 1: Romantic San Juan Welcome

Start your romantic getaway in style! After checking into your hotel (I recommend the historic Hotel El Convento in Old San Juan, rooms from $200/night), take a leisurely stroll through Old San Juan’s cobblestone streets. Hold hands as you explore colorful buildings and charming plazas.

For a special first evening, book a sunset dinner cruise with East Island Excursions ($95 per person). You’ll enjoy stunning views of the San Juan skyline while savoring a gourmet dinner and Caribbean cocktails. It’s a perfect way to kick off your romantic vacation!

Day 2: Relaxation and Beach Bliss

Begin your day with a couples spa treatment at the Waldorf Astoria Spa. Their “Romance Package” includes a couples massage and facial for $450 per couple. It’s pricey, but hey, you’re on vacation!

After feeling refreshed, head to Isla Verde Beach for some sun and sand. This beautiful stretch of coastline is perfect for a romantic beach walk or a swim in the crystal-clear water. Rent beach chairs and an umbrella for about $20 for the day.

In the evening, dress up for a candlelit dinner at Marmalade in Old San Juan. Their tasting menu ($95 per person) is a culinary journey that you’ll both remember. Make sure to book in advance!

Colorful San Juan street, perfect for a romantic walk.

Day 3: Nature’s Romance in El Yunque and Fajardo

Wake up early and drive to El Yunque National Forest. Take the Big Tree Trail to La Mina Falls (0.7 miles each way). The waterfall at the end is a perfect spot for a romantic photo op!

After your hike, head to Luquillo Beach. Known for its calm waters and golden sand, it’s ideal for a relaxing afternoon. Grab lunch at the Luquillo Kiosks – try Ay Bonito! for some delicious seafood (about $15-20 per person).

As night falls, drive to Fajardo for a magical experience – kayaking in the bioluminescent bay. Book a tour with Kayaking Puerto Rico ($50 per person). Paddling through glowing waters under the stars is undeniably romantic!

Day 4: Culebra Island Escape

Today, you’re off to Culebra! Take the ferry from Ceiba ($2.25 one-way, 1-hour trip) or splurge on a quick flight with Air Flamenco ($70 one-way, 30-minute flight).

Once on Culebra, rent a golf cart from Carlos Jeep Rental ($65 per day) and explore the island. Head to Flamenco Beach , consistently rated one of the world’s best beaches. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy on the white sand (grab supplies at the Superette Mayra grocery store in town).

Spend the day swimming, snorkeling, and soaking up the sun. As evening approaches, find a quiet spot on the beach for some of the best stargazing in Puerto Rico. The lack of light pollution makes for an incredibly romantic night sky.

Day 5: San Juan Farewell

On your last day, enjoy a leisurely breakfast at Chocobar Cortés in Old San Juan. Their chocolate-infused breakfast menu is a delicious treat (about $15 per person).

Spend the morning shopping for souvenirs in Old San Juan. Pick up some locally made jewelry at Butterfly People or artisanal rum at Don Q’s Casa Don Q.

In the afternoon, take a tour of the Bacardí Rum Factory ($75 per person for the Rum Tasting Tour). You’ll learn about rum production and get to sample some top-shelf rums.

For your farewell dinner, book a table at Sage Steak Loft in the O:live Boutique Hotel. Enjoy top-quality steaks and seafood with a view of the Condado Lagoon. Live jazz music adds to the romantic atmosphere. Expect to spend about $100-150 per person, but it’s worth it for your last night!

This romantic Puerto Rico itinerary combines relaxation, adventure, and great food – perfect for couples looking to reconnect and create lasting memories.

Family-Friendly Puerto Rico Itinerary

Traveling with kids? No worries! Puerto Rico is a great destination for families. This 6-day itinerary is packed with activities that both kids and adults will love.

Day 1: San Juan Family Fun

After checking into your hotel (the Caribe Hilton is great for families, with multiple pools and a private beach), head to Old San Juan. Let the kids burn off some energy running around the grounds of Castillo San Felipe del Morro ($10 for adults, free for kids under 15).

For dinner, try Señor Paleta. They serve delicious paletas (popsicles) and have board games available – perfect for a fun family evening!

Day 2: Forts, Beaches, and Paddling Fun

Start your day with breakfast at Caficultura in Old San Juan. Kids will love their pancakes, while parents can enjoy some strong Puerto Rican coffee. Expect to spend about $10-15 per person.

Head to Castillo San Felipe del Morro early to beat the crowds. This massive fort is like a giant playground for kids. They can explore tunnels, climb old walls, and imagine life as a Spanish soldier. Don’t forget to fly a kite on the big lawn outside – it’s a local tradition! Entry is $10 for adults and free for kids under 15.

For lunch, grab some sandwiches from Cuatro Sombras ($8-10 each) and have a picnic in the shade of the fort walls.

In the afternoon, head to Condado Lagoon for some paddleboarding. Velauno offers rentals and lessons. A family lesson (up to 4 people) costs about $120 for 2 hours. The calm waters of the lagoon are perfect for beginners and kids.

End your day with a relaxing movie night at the hotel. Many hotels in San Juan offer this service, often with popcorn included!

Day 3: El Yunque Adventure

Today, you’re off to El Yunque National Forest! Pack plenty of water, snacks, and bug spray. Start with the Big Tree Trail to La Mina Falls. It’s an easy 0.7-mile hike each way, perfect for kids. Remember to bring swimsuits – you can take a dip in the waterfall pool!

For lunch, try El Yunque Treehouse near the south entrance of the forest. Their burgers are great, and they have a kid’s menu. Expect to spend about $15-20 per person.

In the afternoon, visit La Coca Falls. It’s right by the road and is a great spot for family photos.

As a special treat, book a night walk in the rainforest with Yokahú Kayak Trips ($55 for adults, $45 for kids). You’ll see glowing fungi and hear the famous coquí frogs. It’s an adventure your kids won’t forget!

View from inside Rio Camuy Cave Park, a highlight for a family Puerto Rico itinerary.

Day 4: Beach Day and Horseback Riding

Start your day at Luquillo Beach, one of the best family-friendly beaches in Puerto Rico. The calm waters are perfect for kids, and you can rent chairs and umbrellas for about $20 for the day. Spend the morning building sandcastles and splashing in the waves.

For lunch, hit up the Luquillo Kiosks. Let each family member choose their favorite – options range from pizza to traditional Puerto Rican food. You can easily feed the family for $10-15 per person.

In the afternoon, head to Carabalí Rainforest Park for a horseback riding adventure. They offer 1-hour rides for $45 per person (kids must be 3 or older). It’s a great way to see the beautiful scenery of Puerto Rico’s east coast.

End your day with a BBQ dinner back at the Luquillo Kiosks. Try El Jefe Burger’s BBQ ribs – they’re a hit with kids and adults alike!

Day 5: Ziplines and Caves

Today’s all about adventure! Start early and drive to Toro Verde Adventure Park, home to “The Monster” – one of the longest ziplines in the world.

Kids must be at least 7 years old and meet height/weight requirements. The Zipline Adventure package costs $135 for adults and $99 for kids.

After an adrenaline-filled morning, have lunch at the park’s restaurant. Their mofongo is delicious and costs about $12-15.

In the afternoon, visit Rio Camuy Cave Park. Take a trolley ride into the cave system and see huge stalactites and stalagmites. The tour costs $18 for adults and $13 for kids 4-12. Note that children under 4 are not allowed in the caves.

For dinner, try a local Chinese-Puerto Rican restaurant like Chun Hing in nearby Arecibo. This unique fusion cuisine is a hit with kids, and meals cost about $10-15 per person.

End the night with some stargazing. The area around Arecibo has less light pollution than San Juan, making it great for spotting constellations.

Day 6: Eco-Cruise and Children’s Museum

On your last day, take an eco-cruise of San Juan Bay with San Juan Water Tours ($65 for adults, $55 for kids). You’ll see historic sites from the water and might even spot some marine life.

After the cruise, grab lunch at Café Manolín in Old San Juan. Their kid-friendly menu includes chicken tenders and fries for about $8.

Spend your afternoon at Museo del Niño (Children’s Museum) in Carolina. With three floors of interactive exhibits, it’s a great place for kids to learn and play. Entry is $10 for adults and kids over 1.

For your farewell dinner, try Vaca Brava in Old San Juan. This Brazilian steakhouse is a fun experience for kids – they’ll love seeing the different meats carved at the table. It’s a bit pricey at $42.95 for adults and $21.95 for kids 6-12 (under 6 eat free), but it’s a great way to end your family vacation.

This family-friendly Puerto Rico itinerary mixes beach time, nature adventures, and cultural experiences. It’s designed to keep both kids and adults entertained throughout your trip!

Make Your Puerto Rico Trip Count!

Okay, so you’ve got your Puerto Rico itinerary all planned out. But don’t forget to leave some wiggle room for surprise fun.

Sometimes the coolest stuff happens when you’re not looking for it. Maybe you’ll find a secret beach or join a street party in Old San Juan. Just go with the flow and see what pops up!

The best part of Puerto Rico is it’s the people, hands down. Chat with the locals, try out your Spanish, and ask where they like to eat or hang out. That’s the real Puerto Rico experience – the friendly faces and fun times you’ll remember long after you’re back home.

20 Best Places to Visit in Puerto Rico — From Uninhabited Islands to Bioluminescent Bays

With incredible beaches and historic cities, Puerto Rico offers countless choices. Here's what not to miss.

Everyone from  reggaetoneros  hunting out Bad Bunny's favorite party places to starry-eyed honeymooners drawn by posh beach resorts can agree: Puerto Rico easily lives up to its name as the  Isla del Encanto — the Island of Enchantment. Part of the joy of a trip comes from scouting out Puerto Rico's hidden beaches, visiting white-sand islets, and hiking to the jungle waterfalls that other travelers missed.

With the help of locals and insiders from PADI, Condado Vanderbilt Hotel, and Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, we've assembled a list of the best places to visit in Puerto Rico, from popular surf spots to winding cave systems and local-approved spots to chow down on traditional dishes like  alcapurrias  and  mofongo .

  • Best tourist destination: Old San Juan
  • Underrated hidden gem: Vieques
  • Best for families: Luquillo
  • Best for couples: Palomino Island

Old San Juan

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

The historic heart of Puerto Rico's capital, Old San Juan, is vibrant beyond its colorful colonial architecture or its iconic "Umbrella Street," Calle de la Fortaleza. Stroll down cobblestone streets lined with centuries-old mansions before arriving at Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a Spanish fortress crowning the western tip of the historic neighborhood and offering spectacular ocean views. End a day of exploring with local bites at one of the neighborhood's countless rooftop restaurants or with a drink at  La Factoría , named the best bar in the Caribbean in 2024.

There are no stoplights on Vieques , the largest island off the coast of Puerto Rico. Visitors will find untouched beaches and dreamy boutique stays. The most popular attraction is the bioluminescent Mosquito Bay, which glows blue at night as you kayak through waters filled with phosphorescent plankton. Enjoy a day trip to the island, or spend a few nights in one of 11 unique accommodations at  Finca Victoria — including cabins, treehouses, and even a vintage Airstream trailer — amid the lush vegetation of the island's interior.

Puerto Rico's  Capital del Sol (Capital of the Sun) is fittingly home to some of the island's most beautiful beaches. Balneario La Monserrate is popular for its extensive public amenities, including showers and picnic shelters, but there are also quieter options such as palm-fringed Playa Costa Azul. Head to Luquillo after a day at neighboring El Yunque National Forest, or use the town as a base for exploring less-visited areas of the rain forest.

Palomino Island

raularosa/Getty Images

"Forget the Maldives, I'll stay in Palomino," muses Bad Bunny in his hit song, "El Apagón." There are no overwater bungalows here, but the white sands and clear seas at Palomino Island certainly warrant a comparison to a Maldivian atoll. The 100-acre, uninhabited island off the eastern coast of the Puerto Rican mainland is for the exclusive use of guests of the  El Conquistador Resort , located just a short ferry ride away.

The oceanfront Condado neighborhood is the place to be in San Juan, with upscale apartments, the city's best restaurants, and plenty of fantastic shopping. Visit La Placita de Santurce, a favorite destination with locals and visitors alike for  Puerto Rican bites  at local spots like La Alcapurria Quemá. The market square also hosts frequent cultural events and street parties.

Condado is also home to some of our readers' favorite resorts in Puerto Rico . Among them shines the Condado Collection of hotels and resorts, including  Condado Vanderbilt Hotel , Condado Ocean Club , and La Concha Resort , which are nestled along some of the most beautiful beachfront in San Juan.

Dorado Beach

Javier_Art_Photography/Getty Images

Those looking to enjoy a retreat from energetic San Juan without traveling far will love the palm-fringed, pristine beaches of swanky Dorado Beach. Stay at  Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve , perhaps Puerto Rico's most exclusive resort. Known for its championship golf courses and the sanctuary-esque Spa Botánico with treehouse treatment rooms, it offers the bespoke luxury experience you'd expect from a Ritz-Carlton Reserve property.

El Yunque National Forest

The only tropical rain forest within the U.S. National Forest System,  El Yunque National Fo rest  is one of the island's natural gems, crisscrossed by hiking trails and home to endless rivers and hidden waterfalls. While El Yunque makes for a popular day trip from San Juan, there's much more to explore than a single day allows, including  natural swimming holes  like Charco El Hippie and the Yokahú Tower, which offers panoramic canopy vistas from an elevation of more than 1,500 feet. Finish your visit with a stop for farm-to-table Puerto Rican cuisine at nearby  Bacoa Finca + Fogón .

La Parguera

Discover Puerto Rico

Travelers who can't make it to Vieques to experience its famous bioluminescent bay should head to  La Parguera , on Puerto Rico's southwestern coast. Bonus: La Parguera's bioluminescent bay is the only one in Puerto Rico where swimming in the glimmering waters is allowed. Drive in for the experience, or stay in one of the area's small guesthouses and spend the day visiting nearby keys for snorkeling and paddleboarding among the mangroves.

Located off the eastern shore of the main island of Puerto Rico, the laid-back island of Culebra is tiny but packs a serious travel punch — with  no passport needed . Home to less than 2,000 permanent residents, it earned a spot on our list of our  readers' favorite islands in the Caribbean in 2023 . Culebra's famed Flamenco Beach often appears atop lists of the world's most beautiful beaches. The abandoned, graffiti-covered U.S. Navy tank at one end of the shore is simultaneously an Instagram icon and a dark monument to the island's past use for naval gunning and bombing exercises.

From Culebra, jump on a water taxi to the even more remote islet of Culebrita, roughly 15 minutes away. Impressive beaches with impossibly clear water are the main draw to this speck of an island. Tortuga Beach, named for the numerous sea turtles that nest here year after year, is considered one of the  best beaches in Puerto Rico .

Cayo Icacos

eddtoro/Getty Images

Yet another of the white-sand keys located off Puerto Rico's eastern coast,  Cayo Icacos  is an increasingly popular day trip destination that beach lovers won't want to miss. Book a catamaran excursion from Fajardo to Cayo Icacos to enjoy the untouched beaches and shallow waters of this uninhabited island.

Río Camuy Caves

Escape the heat of the Caribbean sun at Río Camuy Cave Park  in northwestern Puerto Rico. These limestone caverns have been carved out over centuries by the immense underground river, Río Camuy. While geologists have identified at least 220 caves and 17 miles of natural tunnels, much of the area remains unexplored. Reservations are required, so book in advance with a registered tour company.

On Puerto Rico's western shore, the town of Rincón reigns supreme as a prime surfing destination in the Caribbean. Numerous beaches offer waves for surfers of all levels, though Domes Beach is where you'll find the massive swells that host an international surfing competition every year. October through February is the  best time to visit Puerto Rico  if you're scouting out waves, but Rincón has plenty to offer year-round, even for those who prefer to stay on the shore.

Desecheo Island

Puerto Rico is home to an impressive array of diving destinations, but few are as famous as the uninhabited Desecheo Island, located just off the island's western coast. With an intricate cave system offering memorable swim-throughs and a dive site so colorful it's known as “Candyland,” visitors will have plenty to see while enjoying what  PADI  considers some of the best underwater visibility in all of Puerto Rico.

littleny/Getty Images

Surfers and beach lovers gravitate toward Aguadilla, located on Puerto Rico's western coast. Here, the popular Crash Boat Beach offers an intoxicating mix of white sand, water sports, and a party atmosphere fed all day by beach bars and food trucks serving up tropical cocktails and local fare. While the beach offers great visibility for snorkeling, take care when getting in the water; toward the north of the beach is Gas Chambers, one of Puerto Rico's most famous surfing breaks.

Many travelers skip over Mayagüez, the largest city on Puerto Rico's western coast, and head directly for the area's smaller beach towns. However, Mayagüez can be a convenient base for exploring the best of the western side of the island; its charming historic center and booming culinary scene certainly don't hurt. Mayagüez is also known as the "City of Pure Waters" for its proximity to some of Puerto Rico's best diving destinations, including Desecheo and Mona islands.

Isabela is Puerto Rico's ultimate laid-back beach town, boasting shores that attract everyone from backpackers and surfers to the San Juan elite looking for a weekend escape. To trace the coastline and hit Isabela's most beautiful beaches, rent a bike and hit the Paseo Lineal de Isabela. This 4.5-mile oceanfront route is also perfect for morning jogs and contemplating the sunset. Or, head inland to Guajataca State Forest for miles of lush, forested trails, hidden caves, and camping.

Puerto Rico's second-largest city tends to be overlooked by travelers, but the "Pearl of the South" has the historical charm and cultural weight to warrant a trip. Explore the city's historic plazas and numerous museums, or drive less than 10 miles into the countryside to visit  Hacienda Buena Vista . The 19th-century coffee plantation was one of many in the area that brought Ponce wealth and fame, and now hosts tours and other events.

Casa Bacardí

It wouldn't be a trip to the Caribbean without sampling some of the best local rums. Puerto Rico is home to a few distilleries, though  Casa Bacardí , located just across the bay from Old San Juan, is the number one destination on the island for visitors curious to learn more about the Caribbean's most famous drink. An impressive visitors' center and panoramic views of the city make for a great tasting and tour experience, though the unmatched rum selection is the real star of the show.

About an hour's drive west of San Juan, the coastal town of  Manatí  feels a world away from the big city. Come here for stunning, less-crowded beaches like the half-moon-shaped crystalline bay at Mar Chiquita or Los Tubos Beach, known for its perfect surfing pipes.

8 Best Romantic Things to Do in Puerto Rico

The Caribbean island of Puerto Rico is a great destination for couples hoping to enjoy a romantic escape any time of year. Featuring a rich Latin culture, historic elegance, and laid-back charm, this unincorporated U.S. territory is an ideal destination for honeymoons, weekend getaways, and romantic retreats. Whether you're riding horseback on the beach at sunset or learning to salsa dance with your partner, there are plenty of things to do on your trip to Puerto Rico that will make for an intimate and unforgettable vacation.

Take a Nighttime Trip to a Biobay

Alfredo Maiquez / Lonely Planet Images / Getty Images

Seeing the glowing green waters of a natural bioluminescent bay at night is one of the most interesting and romantic activities you can do in Puerto Rico, which is home to three of the world's five biobays. Formed by microscopic single-cell organisms called dinoflagellates, these glowing bays attract visitors from around the world to witness the ethereal lights each night and make for a truly romantic trip with your loved one.

  • Mosquito Bay : Located on Vieques Island, this is the most popular and impressive biobay in Puerto Rico. Known for having the highest concentration of dinoflagellates, this sheltered biobay is only accessible by booking a trip with the Vieques-based company Abe's Snorkeling and Bio Bay Tours or other similar tour companies.
  • Laguna Grande: If you can't make it to Vieques, rent a car from San Juan and drive yourself to Fajardo , where you can book a kayak eco-tour with Yokahú Kayak Trips or Kayaking Puerto Rico that will take you from Las Croabas to this smaller, sheltered biobay.
  • La Parguera: On the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico near Lajas, La Parguera is much smaller than Puerto Rico's other biobays due to over-boating in the bay. However, the glass-bottom boat tour offered by Alelí Tours is the cheapest biobay excursion on the island.

Go Horseback Riding on a Beach at Sunset

Tropical Trail Rides

While horseback riding on the beach may seem a bit cliche and generic, there's no denying the romantic appeal of taking a sunset ride with your loved one on the shores of one of the island's beaches.

Tropical Trail Rides in Aguadilla offers daily 4 p.m. sunset tours that take you from Puerto Rico's beaches to its verdant forests just in time to see the brilliant colors of dusk take over the sky above the island. The tour typically two to three hours and includes a stop where you can either hike or take a dip in the ocean.

Alternatively, head out to Rincón on the western tip of Puerto Rico—about 90 miles from San Juan—to book a private horseback ride with Pintos 'R' Us. Rincón remains one of the most secluded and least visited portions of the island, and the private sunset tour offered by Pintos allows you and your loved one to enjoy an uninterrupted horseback ride along the beach for two hours.

See a Show, Concert, or Performance

If you're not familiar with the quality and breadth of the theater and music venues in Puerto Rico, you'll be pleasantly surprised at what's available no matter where you go on the island. However, as the city's cultural center, San Juan is the best city to visit if you're looking to catch a performance during your trip.

The magnificent Centro de Bellas Artes Luis A. Ferré on Ponce de León Avenue in San Juan's Santurce barrio (neighborhood) is the city's modern, spacious, and elegant performing arts center. With three main concert and theater halls, this is the place to go for a night of ballet, opera, a play, or a classical music concert. The center is also a fine destination for art lovers, and one of its most beautiful works is "The Muses" by Annex Burgos—a series of six-foot bronze sculptures that evoke the different artistic expressions.

Take a Romantic Tour of Old San Juan at Sunset

Some say the most romantic thing to do in Puerto Rico is simply to stroll along the streets of Old San Juan and imbibe its special charm. This is especially true on Sundays when the Puerto Rico Tourism Company hosts a free event called Atardecer Romántico , or "Romantic Sunset," along Paseo de La Princesa. This is a lovely tree-lined promenade at the foot of the city, with the city walls stretching up on one side and the majestic Raíces Fountain and the San Juan Bay at the end. As you walk, browse the stalls lining the road selling food, drinks, and arts and crafts; stop at a free musical show; join the many couples dancing in the street to the sound of a live band; and steal a kiss by the fountain.

Take a Day Trip to Culebra

cdwheatley / Getty Images

If you're looking for a truly intimate escape with your special someone on your trip to Puerto Rico, book a flight with Air Flemcno or Vieques Air Link or take a ferry from Fajardo to the island of Culebra —located 17 nautical miles east of mainland Puerto Rico.

Known for its pristine, private beaches and a natural barrier of coral reefs, Culebra is the ideal destination for couples who want to get away from all the noise of the city. Stay overnight at Culebra Beach Villas and then snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of Flamenco Beach to see the natural wonder of the coral reef there. Afterward, you can also hike to Carlos Rosario Beach to spend the day laying in the sand.

Hike to a Waterfall

Michele Falzone / Getty Images

Puerto Rico is home to the only rainforest managed by the U.S. Forest Service, El Yunque National Forest, where you'll find lush foliage, miles of hiking trails, and several semi-private waterfalls. If you're hoping to see one of the biggest falls on the island, take La Mina Trail to La Mina Falls , a 35-foot waterfall with a crystal-clear swimming hole underneath it. Alternatively, couples can work up a sweat on the Mount Britton Trail, which leads guests through the jungle, past a few small falls, and to an elevation of 2,493 feet to find an old watchtower that offers great views of the island.

Spend the Day at the Beach

Walter Bibikow / Getty Images

While you may be able to spend the day with your loved one at the beach at home, there's nothing quite like the beaches of Puerto Rico for a romantic afternoon with your special someone. Whether you're looking for a secluded spot to escape or if you'd rather enjoy the comforts of resort amenities nearby, Puerto Rico has plenty of beaches you and your lover can enjoy.

  • Candado Beach: Located right across Laguna del Condado in San Juan, this pristine stretch of sand is great for couples who want to experience all the joys of a day at the beach without leaving behind the creature comforts of the city.
  • Flamenco Beach: Located on Culebra , this remote beach is great for couples looking to get away from tourist crowds.
  • Sun Bay Beach: Found on Isla de Vieques, this long beach features numerous food and beverage kiosks and long stretches of white sand not too far from several great resorts.
  • Luquillo Beach: At the border of El Yunque Rainforest in Luquillo , this beach also offers access to coral reef snorkeling and numerous beach kiosks with relatively small crowds during the week.
  • Ocean Park Beach: Also located near San Juan, this beach is more popular with locals than tourists, making it a great place to take in Puerto Rican culture while you relax on the white sand.

Puerto Rico’s Most Romantic Hotels

Couples love-journ to Puerto Rico for many reasons. For some, it is the cerulean blue ocean, swaying palm trees, and endless beaches. For others, it is the rainforest. El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. Forest Service. Still others come to the ‘Island of Enchantment for the history and neoclassical architecture, gastronomy and salsa dancing.  There is also, for Americans, the simple ease of traveling — no passport required, no cell-phone plan change needed. Whatever the reason, Puerto Rico, with its vibrant flair (molded by Spanish, African, and US influences), has romantic hotels for every couple type. A few of our faves:

For Ultimate Seclusion

Dorado beach, a ritz-carlton reserve, dorado.

puerto rico trip for couples

In designing this low-key, one-with-nature, oceanfront resort , founding father —Laurance S. Rockefeller — had one unwavering rule: “no buildings taller than a palm tree.” The concept, adored by 1960s glitterati — Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Crawford, and Ava Gardner (who once stayed a month) — has continued under the Ritz Carlton marquee. Today, the exclusive property remains a coveted Caribbean hotspot favored by the global jet set. Seclusion is its major draw.

The Vibe:

Lush gardens, stunning ocean views, and guest rooms light in palette, with deep soaking tubs and terraces overlooking the sea, that feel more like a private villa. Many come with private plunge pools.

Private Tete-a-Tete:

puerto rico trip for couples

Reserve a private spa night for two. Meander hand in hand through meticulously lush acres (once part of a pineapple plantation) to the entrance of Spa Botánico where you’re greeted by an 80-plus-year-old ficus tree. Designed by legendary spa developer, Tracy Lee, the spa features indigenous treatment rituals and locally sourced ingredients (coffee, sweet lime, coconut). A standout for couples comes in the 3-hour Noche Romantica Botanica, which begins with a champagne toast and 90-minute couples massage  followed by a private soak in the purification gardens, a steam for two, and relax time under the stars. A specially prepared meal by the chef may be added.

For Nature Lovers

The st. regis bahia beach resort, rio grande.

puerto rico trip for couples

Set on a former coconut plantation, the dreamy St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort is set on two miles of secluded beach between the  El Yunque National Forest and Espíritu Santo River State Preserve. It is the only hotel in the Caribbean to be awarded Audubon International’s Gold Signature sanctuary certification for its commitment to environmentally thoughtful development. With just 139 rooms — each with a private terrace overlooking the sea — the hotel is also a favorite among honeymooners as well as longtime couples looking to disconnect (from everyday life) and reconnect (with one another).

Upscale with butler service, we love the low-rise buildings, colonial-style furnishings, and emphasis on sea and sky, trees, and birds. The resort is home to its own private bird sanctuary and over 240 unique species of flora and fauna, exotic feather friends, and leatherback turtles.

puerto rico trip for couples

While there is plenty to do at the resort — paddle boarding, biking, spa treatments with cruelty-free, organic products, golf on a Robert Trent Jr.-designed course — must-do dates include hiking the rainforest trails and swimming in the waterfalls at El Yunque National Rainforest; and quietly paddling through mangroves on a magical, guided bioluminescent ‘glow-in-the-dark’ night kayak tour to Laguna Grande.

For History and Architecture Buffs

Hotel el convento, old san juan.

puerto rico trip for couples

A convent-turned-luxury hotel, El Convento Hotel, in Old San Juan, checks every box for history and architecture lovers. The landmark yellow building was originally built in 1651 as America’s first nunnery, and served as a Carmelite convent until the early 1900s when it became a garbage truck garage. The building was resurrected into a hotel in 1962 by department store magnate Robert Woolworth — attracting the likes of Ernest Hemingway and Gloria Vanderbilt among others. Much of the hotel’s former history can still be seen in the handmade Andalusian tiles, arched doorways, black-and-white floors, mahogany beamed ceilings, and 350-year-old Nispero tree rising high above the romantic courtyard.

Old-world romance with modern touches. Each of the 58 rooms features elegant Spanish antiques, including one-of-a-kind wood-carved beds; while the rooftop offers a vibey pool and Jacuzzi with views of the city.

puerto rico trip for couples

Stop by the hotel terrace (overlooking the bay and draped in bougainvillea) for complimentary cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before a dinner of contemporary Puerto Rican cuisine at Santísimo Restaurant. Later, meander the cobblestone streets, past the crayola-colored buildings, to La Factoria — a popular spot among locals and visitors — to salsa the night away.

For Trendsetters

O:live boutique hotel, san juan.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by O:live Boutique Hotel (@theoliveexperience)

Set in the trendy Condado neighborhood of San Juan, this 15-room, adults-only boutique hotel is all about intimacy and extras: decadent outdoor spaces, fresh-baked cookies daily, L’Occitane toiletries, and all-glass bathrooms. The well-traveled owner has filled the hotel with a collection of French, Italian, Moroccan, and Spanish pieces, including wrought-iron chandeliers, Spanish tiles and distressed wood walls. Couples will definitely want to book one of the suites which comes with an outdoor bathtub and private verandah complete with a fountain, sofa, and dining table for two.

Rustic-chic, upscale and relaxed. A rooftop bar and lounge (with saltwater plunge pool that lights up at night) keeps the ambience sexy and fun, while offering stunning views of the city and lagoon.

Bathe in the sexy outdoor tub, before heading out for a two-hour floating Champagne picnic. On a bobbing deck, share a bottle of bubbly and a picnic basket of gourmet charcuterie, while watching the sunset over the lagoon. Top off the night on the starlit verandah with a (pre-arranged) ‘surprise dessert’ of  75 red roses served alongside a dozen chocolate-covered strawberries.

For Surfers and Beach Lovers

Villa montaña beach resort, isabela.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Villa Montana Beach Resort (@villamontanabeachresort)

In a region already famous for its natural beauty, the romantic Villa Montaña , in Puerto Rico’s northwestern tip, comes with three miles of secluded beach, 35 acres of lush greenery, and a laid-back romantic ambience. Set on a former sugar plantation, the hotel features traditional rooms along with one-, two-, and three-bedroom villas — all with private patios and terracotta tiles. Chill on bean bag chairs strewn in the sand, or hide away in a hammock by the firepit. Surfing is ideal here, and the famous Jobos Surfing beach is just minutes away. Be sure to check out the food truck park on the way.

Casual elegance with a laid-back, low-key vibe, stunning beach, and Spanish colonial accents.  We love that the resort is pet-friendly, and a favorite spot for small destination weddings.

Spend days horseback riding on the beach, biking the garden paths, lounging by the pools in cushy daybeds, or snorkeling right off the beach. The staff is super happy to arrange private dinners for two, picnics on the sand, and even a bonfire complete with s’mores. Do dress up (one night at least) for fine-dining by Chef Rafael Grau at Eclipse — regarded one of the best restaurants on the island.

Where should you stay in Puerto Rico during your vacation?

For any vacation type in puerto rico:.

puerto rico trip for couples

Horned Dorset Primavera

Rincon, puerto rico.

The 39-room Horned Dorset Primavera feels romantic and exclusive, with a remote location in Rincon and white buildings dotting the lush eight-acre grounds. The suites are adorned with Spanish-Colonial-style decor -- dark wood canopy beds draped with sheer white fabric, lots of marble, big freestanding soaking tubs, and exotic Moroccan touches, like intricate glass-and-bronze light fixtures. Luxurious extras include kitchenettes with stainless steel appliances, decks, and private plunge pools.

puerto rico trip for couples

W Vieques Island

Isla de vieques, puerto rico.

Situated on the small island of Vieques, this hotel has the modern, funky feel of the W brand with a tropical twist -- it's right on it's own private beach, the lobby and rooms feature bright colors and concrete floors, and the infinity pool overlooking the ocean has a pool bar serving up poolside drinks and meals. A couples-friendly hotel, the W has a nice spa and rooms with sexy open bathrooms. "Free" perks such as an airport lounge and in-room Wi-Fi seem great -- until you get your bill laden with hefty daily resort fees.

puerto rico trip for couples

El San Juan Hotel

Isla verde, carolina, puerto rico.

The vibe at the 382-room El San Juan Hotel & Casino is that of a fun, self-contained, relaxed party. The property features a lively lobby, a sprawling free-form pool with swim-up bar, and a location right on the clean, white-sand Isla Verde Beach. Rooms are stylish and beach-y, with white bedding and furniture, light wood, bright, tropical accents, and modern touches such as clear lamps and chairs. The bathrooms are modern, too, but aren't exactly spotless or spacious. Just make sure you're happy staying put: There's not much to do nearby, and Old San Juan is at least a $20 cab ride away.

puerto rico trip for couples

El Conquistador Resort, A Waldorf Astoria Resort

Fajardo, puerto rico.

El Conquistador's reputation tends to precede it. The 984-room cliff-side resort provides some of the most epic views in the Caribbean, and its modern, beach-chic rooms are bright and clean, with plush white bedding, balconies, and sleek, spacious bathrooms. The hotel's beach is pristine and located on a private island (accessibly by a free ferry). But nightly rates are steep, and the remote location makes it hard for guests to venture off-site for cheaper dining and entertainment options. Guests that don't want to spend all of their time on property should consider renting a car.

puerto rico trip for couples

Villa Herencia

Old san juan, puerto rico.

This charming boutique hotel on a quiet side street in Old San Juan might make you feel like you've stepped back in time. Each of the eight rooms is furnished differently, but all share comfortable beds, high ceilings, antique furniture, ornate light fixtures, and direct access to a sunny courtyard. In the common areas, the old-world decor blends with quirky, eclectic modern accents, like zebra-print chairs and bright oil paintings. But while the location in Old San Juan helps make this a romantic spot, the hotel lacks a pool and a full-service staff, and it's a 10-minute drive to the beach.

puerto rico trip for couples

CasaBlanca Hotel

The draw of SOFO CasaBlanca Hotel is its location -- right in the middle of historic Old San Juan, near countless restaurants, nightclubs, and shops. But once you get past the funky, chic decor of the lobby, the hallways are worn and musty, and the rooms -- despite the cute, eclectic decor -- are on the small side, with thin walls, tiny bathrooms (that have temperamental water pressure and temperature), and little light. Perks like free breakfast and Internet add value, but it's worth comparing rates with The Gallery Inn and Villa Herencia.

Begin the evening with a rooftop cocktail and enjoy the stunning views and lit-up San Juan skyline. The AC Rooftop Bar is just one such place —serving up signature drinks and delicious dishes, along with spectacular views of the Caribbean; the AC Rooftop Bar is the ideal place for catching a truly romantic PR sunset. The Avenue is also full of exciting spots to dance the night away—salsa bars and lounges that are as exciting and fun as the city itself. Couples can swing their hips and enjoy live music at places such as The Red Coral Lounge , offering up cocktails and unforgettable swinging salsa and meringue vibes all night long. Romantic Experiences Outside The City

There’s more to Puerto Rico than its capital city—though couples could spend an entire vacation here soaking up the historic vibes, epic nightlife, and exciting cultural attractions that make the city so unique. The best way to truly embrace the romance of this Caribbean island is to branch out and explore some of Puerto Rico’s smaller, more secluded towns and cities—themselves a treasure trove of scintillating sights and exceptional opportunities for real romance.

Rincón: A Romantic Seaside Retreat

The sleepy seaside town of Rincón is a secluded spot perfect for lovers looking to escape the busy hubbub of the San Juan. Situated on the island’s western tip, it’s a great place to spend a night (or two!) soaking up the sun and reveling in the intimately idyllic atmosphere.

Distance From San Juan: 92.1 miles (2 hours, 27 minutes)

How To Get There: Drive, fly, or take a shuttle

Rincón is famous for its amazing sunsets —but that’s just one reason to plan a getaway to this laidback, low-key corner of Puerto Rico. While Rincón is known as an excellent spot for water sports like surfing, paddleboarding, snorkeling, and swimming, it’s also a wonderful place just to kick back and soak up the sun on one of the beaches located along the beach town’s eight miles of coastline. There are also a number of romantic activities perfect for couples looking for intimate, beachy vibes in a scenic island setting far away from bustling crowds.

Sandy Beach is just one such place—a local favorite within walking distance of many of the town’s bars and restaurants . Though a popular hangout spot, couples can find a bit of privacy on one of the secluded spots along the Sandy Beach trail or in one of the area’s cozy vacation rentals. Domes Beach is another local fave —and a bit quieter than Sandy Beach, especially in the summer. Domes is perfect for whale watching and surfing in the winter and is also home to the historic Punta Higüera Lighthouse . With a park of its own, the lighthouse is another superb place to soak up Rincón’s romantic vibes—the perfect spot for a magical sunset picnic. Cap off a magical day in Rincón with a private horseback ride —one of Puerto Rico’s most romantic couple’s activities; the trip is an intimate, two-hour ride along the secluded beach at sunset. What could be better?

Culebra: Isolated And Intimate

Located about 20 miles east of mainland Puerto Rico, Culebra is a tiny island that is a picturesque paradise . Dominated by private beaches and a natural coral reef barrier, Culebra is the perfect retreat for those looking for a relaxing haven of privacy and romance.

Distance From San Juan: 20 nautical miles

How To Get There: Ferry from Fajardo or flight from San Juan

Known for its clear, turquoise waters and abundance of scenic natural areas, Culebra is the perfect spot to go exploring—snorkeling is an especially popular activity on the tropical island due to its highly swimmable waters near the coral reef. However, those looking to relax will find plenty of places to simply relax on the beach while soaking up the amazing sights and warm, tranquil vibes of this quiet PR gem.

puerto rico trip for couples

Flamenco Beach is Culebra’s most visited beach—and with good reason . Consistently recognized as one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire world, Flamenco is a peaceful haven dominated by pristine sand and calm waters that beckon both swimmers and snorkelers alike. Surrounded by the island’s green, rolling hills, visitors will find this splendid beach both lively and relaxing.

For those wishing to go off the beaten track while in Culebra, a visit to Isla Culebrita certainly fits the bill. Part of the island’s famed Culebra National Wildlife Refuge , this small, uninhabited gem is only accessible via water taxi—and the short trip is definitely worth it. With six small beaches of its own, Isla Culebrita is another excellent place to spend some downtime away from the crowds. While you’re there, check out the old lighthouse, the only manmade structure on the island. And don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for plenty of wildlife; after all, the refuge is known for its bird-watching and unique opportunities for spotting local species. Where To Stay In Culebra

Waterfall Wonders At El Yunque National Forest

Nature-loving couples will love the awe-inspiring surroundings of El Yunque National Forest —lush, forested scenery surrounded by miles of hiking trails and romantic waterfalls. While El Yunque is a popular tourist attraction and one of the most famed natural wonders on the entire island, couples also have plenty of opportunities to share quiet, relaxing moments embracing the tropical rainforest’s distinctive beauty.

Distance From San Juan: 29 miles (42 minutes)

How To Get There: Rent a car, or book a tour with your hotel

Hiking is one of the most popular activities in El Yunque—full of breathtaking views and plenty of spots to take a dip; everyone from casual strollers to expert hikers will find something unique to do here . The area is dominated by distinctive flora and fauna as well as natural wonders galore in the form of cascading rivers and epic waterfalls—including La Mina Falls, a 35-foot cascade that plummets into a fabulous, refreshing pool where hikers can take a swim or merely relax and take in the area’s scenic beauty.

Puerto Rico, El Yunque National Forest.

Those looking for more of a challenge will also want to try the Mount Britton Trail —though labeled ‘challenging’ by the park service, much of the 0.8-mile trail is paved—but can also be steep and slippery in places. However, the trek is well worth the effort for stunning panoramic views in the over 2,000-feet tower high above the surrounding area; the perfect partner photo op

The magical island of Puerto Rico is the perfect romantic retreat for couples—from honeymoon-worthy getaways to intimate escapes that are an idyllic way to reconnect and relax. From the bustling streets of historic San Juan that run the gamut from top cultural attractions to beautiful beaches ; to faraway escapes that contain multitudes , this Caribbean island is truly the place to be for partners looking to spend some quality time soaking up the sun and scintillating sights that dominate this spectacular island.
