The World’s Best Luxury Food Tours

Save this content and enjoy it whenever you want

Tom Jenkins.

According to online booking platform Booking.com , 61% of travellers say they “book a destination for its great food and drink”. With tourism recovering post-pandemic, there may never have been a better time to indulge in a luxury food tour.

Curated by experts in the field these high-end culinary tours offer the best of the best when it comes to gastro-tourism, taking you deep into the food cultures of destinations and communities around the world. If you’re in the market for a life-changing gastronomic travel experience, take a look at this list of the world’s best luxury food tours.

League of Travelers

A mountainous landscape.

This luxury culinary tour operator is the work of Roads & Kingdoms working alongside Anthony Bourdain ’s estate and chef José Andrés . Inspired by the late Bourdain’s curiosity and his belief that you can truly understand a culture through its food, these high-end food tours, hosted by local experts, aim to get to the culinary heart of places like Georgia, Italy, Japan, Spain and Thailand. An early tour heads to Asturias (pictured), the rugged Spanish homeland of Andrés, with 5% of all proceeds going to the chef’s World Central Kitchen organisation.

The Presidential

A man walking through a train carriage.

We’re big fans of this elegant train ride through Portugal’s Douro Valley. Starting and ending at Porto’s São Bento station, there really is no better way to spend a day than sauntering through the valley by rail, stopping off for Port tastings along the way, whilst also having your appetite serviced by the resident top chef on board – the likes of Henrique Sá Pessoa and José Avillez . Sadly, autumn 2022 will be the last outing for The Presidential , so called because the train, which was built in 1890, has hosted presidents, kings and queens, and even the Pope during its lifetime. So, get in there quick for the experience of a lifetime.

Paragon by Modern Adventure

A peaceful Japanese street scene.

This series of experiences from travel company Modern Adventure uses “travel as a force for good” by directly supporting non-profits and charities. Each small group tour is hosted by a ‘luminary’ from the industry, serious names like Jorge Vallejo from The World’s 50 Best Restaurants top 10 restaurant Quintonil in Mexico City, and Kyle Connaughton from three-Michelin-starred Single Thread in Healdsburg, California who will be kicking things off with a trip to Japan. Each luminary chooses a good cause, which in Japanophile Connaughton’s case means donations to The Culinary Institute of America in Napa to help students who want to study in Japan.

Cyclists on a coastal road.

A long bike ride is one way to burn off/work up an appetite for a massive meal and Le Blanq riffs on this for its luxury tours that combine cycling and fine eating. Its ‘joyrides’ take in stunning locations around the world and enlist the services of two-wheel champions like Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish MBE , and chefs like Niklas Ekstedt , Alain Passard , and Kobus van der Merwe ( Ashley Palmer-Watts is Culinary Director) to dangle the proverbial carrot of a fantastic meal as a reward for your efforts. You don’t have to be an overly avid cyclist to join in either, just in possession of excellent taste and the willingness to give it a go.

Casa Maria Luigia

Any visitor to Massimo Bottura and Lara Gilmore ’s Emilian hideaway may feel content to simply stay put on the grounds, soaking up the atmosphere and indulging in the greatest hits dishes of their nearby Osteria Francescana restaurant that are served up nightly. But it seems a shame to waste the opportunity and not partake in one of Casa Maria Luigia ’s organised tours. They include a guided stroll around Bologna’s UNESCO city centre followed by a pasta making course, and of course, visits to local vinegar- and cheese-makers. You can also enjoy a private concert at late Moderna native Pavarotti’s house or for the petrolheads, whip a Ferrari round a track or take a classic car for a spin in the Emilian countryside.

Travellers with fresh ice cream in Kas, Turkey

Uncover a world of authentic, mouth-watering food.

Food brings people together. It anchors you in the present moment. That’s why, years after a trip, you can still remember the taste of fresh, juicy olives in  Greece , or the fragrant smell of pho simmering on the stove in  Vietnam . By pairing the classic grassroots Intrepid Travel style with a focus on food, you’ll get up close and personal with the world's most exciting food cultures. It might be spoiling your tastebuds with flavor-filled curries in  Sri Lanka , mastering the art of making soba noodles in  Japan  or sharing a meal with Buddhist monks in  South Korea .

Created with the culinarily curious in mind, these are real, local experiences with a foodie twist: one part culture, one part adventure and three parts delicious. From bite-sized trips to gastronomic odysseys, we’ll get you munching, crunching, sipping and slurping just like the locals. Hungry?

Ceviche is the unofficial national dish of Peru. It's made by marinating cubes of raw fish and seafood in lime juice, onions, salt and aji amarillo chilli peppers, and is served cold with sweet potato chunks, plantain chips and corn on the cob.

This saffron-flavored rice dish originated in Valencia hundreds of years ago when hungry servants would combine rice with leftovers from Moorish kings' lavish banquets. The dish varies across the regions, but the mixed version with chorizo, mussels and prawns is the most popular internationally.

Struggling to choose just one curry? Fear not. A thali comprises several eye-popping dishes served on a large plate. The dishes typically include grains, lentils, vegetables or meat curries, chutney, raita, pickles and pappadum – creating the perfect balance of sweet, salty, bitter, sour, astringent and spicy flavors.

When traveling through the Balkans, treat your tastebuds to delicious charcuterie boards loaded with traditionally preserved meats, cheeses, vegetables and bread. Some of the most popular Balkan meats to try include cevapi (homemade grilled sausage), njeguši (dry-cured ham) and pljeskavica (Balkan burger).

There’s a whole world of Thai noodle dishes to discover beyond the obvious (and delicious!) pad thai. Khao soi is a chicken and coconut noodle soup from northern Thailand. It’s packed with vibrant aromatics and is served with crispy fried noodles, shallots and fresh lime wedges on top.

Considered to be Israel’s national dish, these balls of deliciousness (made with ground chickpeas, herbs and spices) are a must-try plant-based dish. They’re usually served on a platter or in a warm pita pocket filled with pickled vegetables, crunchy cabbage salad and generous lashings of creamy tahini sauce.

We love the highlights, but for us, the real magic is found off the tourist trails. Our trips combine iconic sites with hidden gems that you’ll only discover with Intrepid. We’re talking mornings exploring the Taj Mahal, followed by a Mughlai cooking class with a passionate home cook.

Whether you’re perusing markets, hunting down the best street food bites or learning how to cook centuries-old family recipes at a homestay, there’s no better way to get the inside scoop on a destination – and its culinary traditions – than with an expert local leader by your side.

Big coaches and flag-toting tour guides don’t cut it for us. With a maximum group size of 12, our groups blend in with the locals and have plenty of opportunities to interact with chefs, street food vendors and group leaders. It also means you can really connect with your fellow foodies.

What food can I expect?

Expect to eat the local way. We didn’t call these trips ‘food adventures’ for nothing. Forget Michelin stars and 20-course degustations – our local leaders will help you get behind the scenes of local food culture, track down the freshest street food, discover the most authentic local restaurants and reveal the traditions and techniques that make these destinations so deliciously mouth-watering.

From lining up with locals for fresh tortillas in a Mexican market to hopping between Logrono’s thriving tapas bars, they’ll show you local food from the perspective of those who eat it every day.

How does a Food Adventure differ to a regular Intrepid trip?

All of our food trips have been designed with one thing in mind – experiencing the best local food on the planet. But we all know that there’s much more to food than just eating it – so whether it’s browsing markets for fresh produce, sizzling up a storm in a cooking class or meeting a local street-food legend, we’ve stuffed your plate to the brim.

And once you’ve devoured all the local food you can handle, we’ve made sure our Food Adventures are rolled up into a burrito with the lot so you won’t miss out on the iconic sights and authentic cultural experiences that are found on all our Intrepid trips.

Is there any freedom & flexibility in the itineraries?

Like all Intrepid itineraries, we’ve made sure our food trips provide free time between activities, allowing you to digest a destination either with your group or on your own.

You might spend the morning exploring a buzzing local market with your guide and cooking a delicious local dish with your group before heading off on your own to wander the marbled halls of a museum or cycling through ancient alleys.

We’ve also left plenty of mealtimes free of organized activities, which gives you the flexibility to ‘get your gourmet on’ at a fine dining restaurant or simply seek out your own ‘real food’ adventure.

Needless to say, your leader will be there every step of the way with suggestions and recommendations.

What transport is used?

Sometimes, the best way to eat like a local is to travel like one too. That could mean jumping on a boat to discover the flavors of the Mekong Delta, riding the Tokyo subway to a sake bar or rattling along in a rickshaw in pursuit of Agra’s finest chaats. We love to use local transport because it gives us a chance to experience everyday local life from a new perspective.

What is the accommodation like?

Whether you’re spending the night in an ancient fortress or in the home of a local family, most of our trips include a memorable overnight stay that is designed to make your trip extra memorable. When we do choose to use hotels, all of our accommodation options are in our Original style, which means a mix of 2-3 star establishments that are safe, clean and comfortable.

How do Food Adventures benefit local communities?

We help support local economies by purchasing snacks and meals from street-side vendors, dining in local restaurants, eating seasonal produce from the destination, and using local guides throughout our itineraries.

Many of our trips incorporate visits to community projects, and we choose locally-owned accommodation wherever possible. We are committed to a style of travel that is culturally, environmentally and socially responsible.

Why does every Food Adventure include a plant-based meal?

Plant-based foods generally have a much lower carbon footprint than animal-based foods, and incorporating more plant-based eating into our diet is a major opportunity to mitigate and adapt to climate change. As Intrepid continues to innovate in ways to reduce our impact on the environment, including a delicious meal that showcases local fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds is just one way that we are investing in the health of our planet.

What about vegan travelers?

We do our best on all our trips to accommodate dietary requirements (including vegan diets), and our Real Food Adventures include at least one plant-based meal. If you want a more tailored experience, that's where our  Tailor-Made team  can step in. We can use our 30 years of experience and regional specialists to help you create your perfect vegan food adventure.

Mexican Food, Culture, & Fun

Join our local guides to see a whole new side of mexico city.

In Mexico City, two food worlds exist side by side: the restaurants and the streets. It can be hard to know which sidewalk grills, market stalls, taquerías , and cantinas to visit if you’re not familiar with the city. Enter: the Eat Mexico team.

On our tours, we’ll whisk you away from the tourist traps and take you to places that our local resident guides know and love. We want you to connect with Mexico City in a profound way, by tasting the food that residents eat and enjoy. You’ll learn the food’s history, the ingredients, the how’s and the why’s. You’ll hear from the guides and meet our vendors, as we’re all proud to share our heritage.

Each of our Mexican food tours has been carefully designed by our on-the-ground team to highlight three things: the deliciousness of the cuisine, the richness of Mexican gastronomic history and culture, and the vendors who prepare the food. Whichever tour fits your interests, our local and bilingual guides will give you an experience you won’t forget.

NARVARTE AT NIGHT

Journey through la merced, gourmet san juan market & street food, see what our previous guests have to say, sklakes | july 2024, trip advisor.

This was one of the best food tours I’ve done. Nicco, the guide, gave a depth of insight into Mexican history, culture, and resilience through food. Santa Maria la Ribera is a hidden gem of a neighborhood in Mexico City, with an infectious local feel that will undoubtedly charm you. The small gourp nature of the tour (4 peopole max) will give you a rare, personalized experience unlike most tours you will encoutner while traveling.

Kirby E | July 2024

Nico is such a knowledgeable guide and shared lots of information about the food stops we made as well as history about the neighborhood! There was a good variety in the types of stops we made and all of the food was fantastic! Highly recommend.

David S | June 2024

Had a fantastic experience with the family food tour. We had three adults and three children between 6 and 9 years old, and everyone loved it. Perfect mix of options for the full group, and our tour guide Toti was amazing. Highly recommended!!

Pamela W | June 2024

This was such a great experience! I get really overwhelmed in situations like this but felt super at ease with our guide, Nico. We ate amazing food and learned about the culture throughout.

Marc B | May 2024

We did the mercado and navarte tours and had amazing experience. I had gone in both these tours during a visit in November 2023 and had such a great time I decided to do it again with family! Toti was our guide for each occasion and is always a great resource for culinary and cultural questions!

Janett R | April 2021

Having someone trained in the culinary arts guide you through the markets and street vendors is such a treat. San Juan market with Ariane was a perfect introduction to the best places to eat in Centro. The al pastor I had with her has been standard setting. I also know exactly where to go for ingredients and gourmet gifts for loved ones now.

PWB | February 2021

My 3rd time doing the Chilangos Taco Tour with Eat Mexico Culinary Tours & I love it every single time. The past two times I was fortunate enough to have the amazing Adrian as my guide. He’s so knowledgeable & passionate, plus he’s a super nice guy. This tour rocks. Great service, communications, value, experience – 5 stars each time.

To make the most of a culinary tour, careful planning and research are essential. Begin by selecting your desired culinary destinations and identifying reputable tour operators that specialize in culinary experiences. Look for providers that offer a diverse range of tours, have positive reviews, and prioritize authentic and immersive experiences.

Budgeting and logistics are also crucial factors to consider. Determine the overall cost of the tour, including accommodation, meals, activities, and transportation. Consider the duration of the tour, the group size, and the level of comfort you desire. Some culinary tours offer all-inclusive packages, while others may require additional expenses for certain activities or meals. Plan ahead to secure any necessary travel documents, such as visas or travel insurance, and make sure to coordinate transportation arrangements to and from the culinary tour destination.

You’ll gain a better understanding of flavor combinations, ingredient selection, and cooking methods, empowering you to recreate authentic dishes from your culinary tour at home.

Support sustainable and responsible practices

Choose tour operators and establishments that prioritize sustainable and responsible approaches to food. Look for those that support local farmers, use organic or ethically sourced ingredients, and promote environmentally friendly practices.

Extend your culinary journey at home

Once your culinary tour is over, don’t let the experience end. Bring back the flavors and techniques you learned and incorporate them into your own cooking at home. Experiment with new recipes, source authentic ingredients, and share the stories and flavors of your culinary adventure with family and friends.

In conclusion, embarking on a culinary tour is a delightful way to combine your love for food and travel. MORE THAN 5000 FIVE STARS REVIEWS

“Exceeded my expectations! Silvia gave us such insights into the changing Portuguese landscape of both architecture, cultural diversity, and gastronomy over the centuries. Her commitment to quality and family-owned businesses is a testament to her belief in the beauty of the culture. Food selections and wines were spot on. Highly recommend it for foodies and anyone who likes learning about food and culture. Silvia gave much more than I expected which elevated the experience. Don’t underestimate the value of the commentary to enhance the food and cultural experience”.

“I was late to this experience because my driver and I were rear ended in the Uber. Thais told me where to meet everyone because I had been awake for about 40 hours after traveling, and was very confuses about where to go. You would think after being rear ended while tragically sleep deprived, that I would’ve had a terrible experience on this excursion. Byt was not the case at all! Thais took us on a fantastic walk with five different amazing small meals with wine. I don’t drink, but this was not a problem. There was always an option for me. Thais also told stories of her travels and life experiences. She is so clever, funny, and bright. She made us all laugh and it seems like the other guests also enjoyed her as much as I did. I really enjoyed all the history she shared with us. About the churches, the Moors, the fish wives, and the different neighborhoods. My friend came to visit the next day and I took her on some of the same steps and was able to tell her some history thanks to Thais. Take this tour! PS - I really liked they confirmed everything the day before.”

“Samuel was a phenomenal host and guide. He showed us places we would never have found on our own and taught us so much about the history of Lisbon. He even lent us his umbrella when it started raining. Throughout the tour, we were immersed in local culture and far away from tourist traps. We had a great small group of six and really had fun together. The best thing we’ve done on our trip to Portugal. Highly recommended!"

“We absolutely recommend this tour, especially with our co-host Dárida. She is so warm and kindhearted. We appreciated how personable she was with everyone. This was hands down the best decision we made as far as a walking tour goes. We had an amazing group of people that we all connected with. The food, the drinks, and the history we received felt authentic and informative. They even offer a great list of follow up spots to hit after the amazing tour she guides you through. Mahalo nui loa & Meshew forever! Best tour ever!”

Loved this tour so much! Met some great people from all across the world and learned SO much...not just about food but the history of the city, regions and country! Would have given 6 stars if I could. : )

We had the BEST EVER food tour today in Lisbon with Oh My Cod Tours. 4 hours of walking different neighborhoods, eating fabulous Portuguese food at lovely family owned restaurants, drinking so many different kinds of wine, and learning about Portugal's history and culture. Small group, only 10 of us. So much food! And wine! Our Portuguese guide Marina was absolutely fabulous...funny, smart, knowledgeable, spoke excellent English, and was very caring about our comfort and safety. She always managed to have us walk and stand in the shade, too! Highest recommendation!

This was a wonderful introduction to Portuguese food, history, and culture—I can’t recommend it highly enough! We traveled through four different neighborhoods, from most modern to oldest, tasting food and wines from each. Rodrigo was a great host, and has provided us with several excellent tips even after the tour was over— such as where to go for the best fado. So happy we went on this tour!

I am so glad I took this tour of Lisbon as I learned so much history and interesting facts that I will never find out unless with a local who is passionate about the culture and history of the city. The food experience was great and the other people on the tour were kindred spirits. We liked this tour so much we might do it again next time we are in Portugal just so we can hang out with Silvia! We were lucky we had her on our tour as she was training someone new. Now we are on the lookout for any other Silvia tours - Azores, Alejentjo?!? Wish there was a Silvia in every city.

This tour is an excellent option to walk across historic landmarks and cultural districts (barrios) inside Lisbon Old City, all in 4 hours of culinary tastings and good wine. Adriana, our guide tour, was very attentive and informative about architecture, history and culinary facts as we went along. Each restaurant that we stopped at was a new culinary ethnic experience. I definitely recommend this tour.

This tour with Livia was so great! It felt very personalized, and at each food stop we were greeted with food prepared ahead of time and ready immediately when we arrived. We tasted some of the Portuguese classics but also some cuisines I did not expect. All was delicious. The value for the price seemed amazing! There was plenty of time for conversation and lots of learning about the city in between stops, which I loved. It was great to be shown the ropes by a local who loves food and to hear her story. I also enjoyed the wine tasting element - it was not just about the food. I would high recommend this tour!

Livia's food experience in Lisbon was an absolute culinary delight that surpassed all my expectations. From the moment we started the tour I was greeted with warm hospitality and some history of the city. Livia's passion for food was evident in every aspect of the experience. The carefully curated locations/spots showcased the best of Lisbon's gastronomy and history. Each dish was a masterpiece ( especially the last stop - cheese and jam) , bursting with fresh and vibrant ingredients that showcased Livia's impeccable culinary knowledge. It was just remarkable, from the beautifully presented appetizers to the amazing Portuguese wine. The flavors were a harmonious symphony, dancing on my taste buds and leaving me craving for more. Livia's knowledge of local ingredients and the historical influence of the dishes truly set this food experience apart. Beyond the exceptional food, Livia's warm and engaging personality added an extra layer of enjoyment to the evening. Her passion for sharing her culinary expertise and her genuine interest in her guests created an intimate and convivial atmosphere. I felt like I was dining with an old friend, and the conversations flowed effortlessly. In conclusion, Livia's food experience in Lisbon was an unforgettable journey of flavors and hospitality. If you find yourself in Lisbon and have the opportunity to dine with Livia, seize it without hesitation. It is an experience that will leave you with treasured memories and a newfound appreciation for the culinary wonders of Portugal

We highly recommend the 17 Tastings Lisbon Food Tour by Silvia from Oh! My Cod. This tour allowed our family to see Lisbon and taste local Portuguese cuisine from the perspective of a local while supporting local family-owned businesses. Additionally, we received an itinerary from the day and other edible recommendations for the area. This tour is perfect for the start of any visit to Lisbon, Portugal. It was a truly memorable experience for our family.

This food and wine tour led by Livia and her coworker Miguel was incredible! We went to 4 different local restaurants in Lisbon all walking distance and we had local tastings: cheese, wine, bread, sausages, jam, fish .sardines, octopus vegan rice and beans, veggie dish, desserts and more wine! I do not eat cheese and fish and still had a great experience. Livia is very knowledgeable, friendly and just a wonderful guide! Highly recommend if you have A few hours in Lisbon !

Feast on food and knowledge as Silvia's team brings you through the small roads of old Lisbon. A great first stop for your trip to the capital of Portugal, to ask and add more things to do. A regretable last stop for our group, because now we want to go back!

Book this tour! We did quite a few tours on our month long Europe trip and this by far was the best one. Livia was phenomenal, the stories were fun and informative, and the food was delicious. The places we visited were off the tourist path, full of history, and such a treat to get to experience.

Very lovely food tour that excels in two areas in particular: showcasing Portuguese history through the choice of stops and cuisines, and pacing things to leave you full but not sick. Not to mention I thought it was a very good value for the amount of food you get.

Wow! What an amazing tour! Not only did Livia and Beatrice take us to places with amazing food and wine but they had stories to tell along the way! We appreciated hearing the incredible history of Lisbon's neighborhoods and trying all sorts of new food! Plus Livia and Beatrice were so welcoming, fun and easy to get along with! We have already recommended this tour to a few friends! I highly recommend if you are in Lisbon!

What an enriching experience Sylvia gave us today. It surpassed my expectations in every way in that her knowledge of Portuguese cuisine, art and history was immense. The tour had been thoughtfully planned and the interlinking narrative threads wove a story of Lisbon and its culture into a symmetry and beauty much like the gorgeous tiles we saw along our journey. I particularly enjoyed Sylvia’s provocative little questions which drove the narrative and made us think about the reasons why bacalau may be such a beloved fish. Oh, and by the way, the food was quite delicious too.

Absolutely incredible experience that exceeded my expectations! I spent a lot of time parsing through the various food tour options in Lisbon and could not be happier that I chose an Oh! My Cod tour. Genuinely could not recommend enough! Rodrigo was a phenomenal guide, who is extremely knowledgeable about Lisbon, both all things food and otherwise! After speaking with others traveling in Lisbon who went on other food tours, this tour seems to significantly surpass other options. While many of the other tours available seem somewhat touristy, the Oh! My Cod tour was incredibly thoughtful and authentic. All of the stops are small, locally owned places that felt special and in no way touristy. I especially appreciated visiting a Mozambican restaurant and hearing about how African cuisine has shaped Portugese cuisine, by virtue of Portugal's history of colonization (I don't think any of the other food tours embed this important sociocultural history in their tours, and it is much needed!). You get to try A LOT of different things and everything is included in the tour price, making it a fantastic value --- I was genuinely surprised how much we got to eat and drink during the course of the tour. Everything was so delicious. After the tour, Rodrigo shared a truly amazing email including information on all of the tour stops and things we ate and a recipe for one of the dishes we tried, as well as other food and non-food recommendations for Lisbon. I was able to eat at one of the restaurants he recommended, Antiga Camponesa, and had a phenomenal meal. Book this tour, I wish I could go back and do it all again!!!

This food tour was awesome! A great way to try all the must-have Portugal dishes, and a nice way to walk around to different neighborhoods. The hosts were lovely and shared a lot of interesting information about the places we visited. I did the tour with my friend who is a vegetarian (I am not), and they accommodated every dish so that we could both enjoy! This tour made me want to sign up for a food tour in every city I visit.

This was an extraordinary tour because we are taken into the heart of historic Lisbon to taste the true flavors of different cultures. We went only to small family owned restaurants, each celebrating Lisbon’s unique history. Our hosts Marina and Sylvia shared not only food but also the cultures in an historic context. Plus wonderful wines, cheeses and Port. Highly recommend.

Fantastic tour!!! So glad I did it, wish I did it on my 1st or 2nd day of staying in Lisbon, I would have had a better idea of which parts of the city I want to explore more and what type of food to order later in restaurants! Miquel our guide was exceptional! Loved his hospitality, how he included and made everyone feel very comfortable throughout the tour! Very well thought out tour! You eat, drink, then walk to next restaurant for your next course, while get to learn about Lisbon, Portugal, and it’s traditions, history and the people. The walk between each restaurant was beautiful and I couldn’t stop taking photos! Food and wine at each location was delicious and the restaurants we dropped at were places I probably would not have stopped by and would have missed it if I was just walking alone. Absolutely perfect tour and I can’t recommend it highly enough!!

Cannot recommend the 17 tastings food tour more highly! The emphasis was on out of the way places, and not on the typical tourist traps. Our guide was exceptional and followed up with an extensive email of more places to go, recipes, and even secret hideaways.

How to Plan a Food Trip

Close your eyes. Think about your favourite city or place to visit. Now, imagine a food you love passionately. I’m sure you smiled! That’s it, eating and travelling are things that really move us. Well, that is what Food Travel means. Is there a better thing than to combine these two passions in a culinary trip?

What is Food Travel

Food Travel means moving around with the aim of exploring a destination gastronomic offer . Exploring the pleasures of the table has always been associated with moments of leisure, but on a gastronomic trip, the culinary experience is no longer just a complement but the main motivation in choosing a destination and in the way of exploring it .

In general, it means travelling to do food tourism , which we define as follows:

Food tourism is composed of activities that provide experiences of consumption and appreciation of food and beverages, presented in such a way that value the history, the culture and the environment of a particular region. by Food’n Road

Why Food Travel?

What we want to highlight is that, in practice, when we combine travel with gastronomy, there is a whole set of experiences and learnings about the history, traditions, environment and local culture that go beyond taste. Realizing this is life-changing!

visit to the golden temple kitchen in Amritsar to make Indian food is also food travel

Food and Travel, an experience we never forget

On a trip, we want to have different experiences from our daily lives. These experiences become remarkable when you feel connected with them. That’s exactly how food plays its role.

The bond with food is a universal language, after all, no matter where you came from, food is certainly part of your history. That is why every travel memory always comes with a flavour .

meal in restaurant with traditional food in Cambodia is considered Food Travel as a culinary trip

The experience is for everyone

It is a mistake to think that this type of trip is only for those who like to (and can) eat in renowned restaurants, or visit expensive wineries. The food tourism industry is creative and aware of the interests of travellers.

Best of all, it is a democratic and flexible way of travelling. Nowadays, you can easily explore a gastronomic culture in different ways: in the countryside or in the city, individually or in groups, with luxury, with adventure. There is a broad range of options for all budgets and tastes.

We should not fail to mention that technology has also helped a lot of people who are looking for food experiences during a trip. Today, you can easily find online restaurant reviews, menu translation, independent guides, local dining platforms, and more.

For example, how about including a cooking class on your next trip? In addition to having fun while learning traditional dishes, you can cook these dishes when you return home, and remember the trip while sharing the experience with friends and family.

Want more ideas? Check out the list below with some examples of what to do on a culinary trip .

Activities in Food Tourism:

  • Take a street food tour;
  • Tasting of local dishes and beverages;
  • Follow regional product routes (e.g. travel on wine or coffee routes);
  • Eat at traditional restaurants;
  • Share meals with local people;
  • Participate in culinary events and festivals;
  • Visit local markets;
  • Learn about the production of food by visiting farms and artisan producers;
  • Participate in cooking classes;
  • Visit exhibitions that explain the history of local cuisine;
  • Culinary expeditions with chefs and specialists.

If you want to understand each of these activities in detail, we have written another article that explains the main activities of food tourism .

participate in a cooking class during a culinary trip is considered part of Food Travel

How to Food Travel

You can choose between an immersive food trip, where the entire itinerary is centred on the culinary experiences of the destination, or just include some food tourism activities to complement your itinerary .

But, regardless of your travel style, there is a secret to unlock the full potential of food tourism: Curiosity!

Try to understand not only what people eat, but why they eat in one way or another, what are the local ingredients, what is the story behind the food they prepare. Ask, interact, taste and smile.

How to Plan a Culinary Trip

You can plan a culinary trip independently or through agencies. And whatever your choice is, Food’n Road will help you .

To begin with, get inspired by our Food and Travel blog and explore food destinations with guides and content from each country.

After choosing the destination of your next trip, we suggest two paths :

If you want to plan your itinerary independently, visit our marketplace to find and book experiences , we handpick the best food tourism activities and tours from around the world .

Now, if you want a true gastronomic journey adapted to your taste, we suggest our Food Travel Design service to make a completely customized itinerary for you .

It makes a difference to go beyond the plate

On a culinary trip, you end up learning a lot about the local culture and the best, directly with the residents, exchanging information, trying new flavours and having fun.

During our travels, something that always strikes us is to notice the similarities between the cuisine of distant countries and how the same ingredients are used in such different ways.

For example, have you ever wondered how important the chilli pepper is for Asian cuisine even though it is a native ingredient from the Americas? With each trip, a new discovery!

driving to taste the sugar palm fruit during a culinary trip amid food travels

Food Travel is much more than travelling to eat

We can learn a lot on a trip like this, meet people with different realities from the ones we live in, see other lifestyles, and encourage the preservation of heritage and traditions .

By sharing the table with local people, listening to their stories and talking about typical dishes, you will feel part of the place and will appreciate aspects that were previously unknown.

On your next trip, try to learn about the destination by exploring the local cuisine and I am sure you will never forget this experience.

Count on Food’n Road to plan your next culinary journey and have a nice trip!

Food Tour in Tours (Morning)

Wonderful experience.

I've been on many food tours throughout Europe, and this was among the best. Our guide, Sheena, was knowledgeable and engaging. We made numerous stops, sampling a good variety of foods - from savory to sweet, and also including fantastic local wine. There were stops that were long enough for us to sit and visit while enjoying the foods, giving the tour a relaxed vibe. At the conclusion of the tour, Sheena gave us specific recommendations for places to go, based on our interests. We returned to several of our stops throughout the week we were in Tours and were grateful to have discovered them through the tour. Highly recommended.

Excellent activity to discover the city

Myself, Wife and adult daughter did the food tour and were very pleased we did. Our guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We did the morning half day tour starting in an old bakery. The tour had lots of variety of food and plenty of details about the origins and history of the places we visited. The tour finished with a fine dining restaurant tasting which was superb. Overall we really enjoyed the tour and would highly recommend it. Plenty of food and lots of variety.

Fun, educational and great food/spirits.

We came to Tours from Paris and went on this tour with Orla. This was Amazing!!!! We can’t decide what we liked best; the places, the food or the history. However one thing was for sure- Orla was the BEST guide! I’d do the same tour in a heartbeat.

10/10 would recommend to a friend.

Food tours tend to be our first booking whenever we book a holiday so we had never done one in France. Definitely our favorite tour to date, our tour guide Sheena was very knowledgeable, we learned a lot about the food and history of the area, made some new friends and tried a lot of delicious food. 10/10 would recommend to a friend! A must do when in the area.

The handsome old city of Porto, set on the banks of the Douro River, has a lot to offer the discerning visitor There is much to see in this fascinating city; the large UNESCO heritage listed medieval center is still largely intact. The city, well renovated and adorned with some grandiose baroque monuments and outstanding art galleries like the Serralves museum, offers some striking modern architecture too – world-famous architect Rem Koolhaas’ striking concert hall Casa de Música for example.

For centuries, Porto has been the center of the port wine trade; historic port lodges abound in the Gaia district of the city. Some of these lodges have beautiful azulejo tiled tasting rooms, where one can enjoy various styles of port wines. The city’s wine bars and restaurants, where both the stunning Douro table wines as well as port wines are served, are also never far away. As in any good wine growing culture, excellent food is also prevalent, and Porto’s gastronomical resources have been getting well deserved acclaim.

Douro Valley

From Porto, follow the Douro river inland and you will discover a rural paradise with magnificent countryside: the   Douro Valley. This area in particular may be Europe’s most spectacular wine region, offering the visitor stunning scenery. The deep gorge that the Douro has carved through soft slatey soils allows for dramatic vistas. The steep hillsides are covered from top to bottom with terraced vineyards. They are so steep that to this day grapes can only be handpicked.

Whilst the valley is historically famous as the producer of port wines, for the last 15 years some of Europe’s best unfortified table wines have also been made here. The best wine estates make both port and table wines and, in quite a few instances, the estate owners take their table wines more seriously than their port wines.

The vineyards are mostly planted with the local varieties like  Touriga Nacional ,  Touriga Franca,   Tinta Roriz  and  Tinta Amarella.  Reflecting the dramatic variations in both the orientation and altitude of the land, the characters of the wines produced in neighbouring vineyards can be quite different. The style of the wines also varies enormously depending on the provenance of the grapes and the intentions of the winemaker – from Burgundian to schistose solidity.

There is a real air of excitement in the Douro Valley about this extraordinary terrain’s ability to express itself in such a diverse range of wine.  At the same time the leading wine makes in the region have been becoming more progressive, with many showing a keen focus on sustainability including cultivating vines organically. No wonder leading wine magazines like Wine Spectator have been given high marks to many Douro table wines regularly.

We are foodies and we were looking for some special service which could offer help with meeting and understanding real Russian cuisine. Eat is Moscow made it come true. Thanks!
I had a great time on the tour, I was extremely full by the end of the tour, the selections were very good I thought and Leo was a great guide. I was pleased to see some of the local parts of town.
Is was a very nice experience to eat with Alexander and his wife. The Russian food was good. And the explanation was very interesting. I enjoyed the evening fully and i wish Alexander and his wife all the best for the future!!!
Traditional Russian cuisine tour was great – food was delicious and the tour guide was able to throw in some history and neighbourhood references.
The benefit of a private guide is that he can tailor the experience to exactly what you want to see and take you to all local spots you won’t find on tripadvisor. Our guide was able to show us real Moscow!
