Wso signs partnership with digimithril to bring ai into squash refereeing.

SHORT HILLS,  N.J. , Aug. 28, 2024 /CNW/ -- World Squash Officiating (WSO) - the organisation dedicated to the regulation and development of squash officiating worldwide - has signed a partnership with US-based startup DigiMithril to bring artificial intelligence (AI) into squash refereeing.

DigiMithril, founded by tech entrepreneur Pragun Seth , have created a state-of-the-art AI platform - IntelliReferee - to detect interference in squash and make objective decisions in real-time. The platform will initially be tested at major events during the 2024-25 PSA Squash Tour season, with plans to integrate the technology into refereeing in the future.

IntelliReferee measures a range of factors - including distance between players, access to front wall, frontal and lateral interference, ball speed and angle - to make objective decisions which are then relayed to the video referee to assist them. The partnership between WSO and DigiMithril follows on from a successful trial of IntelliReferee ran during the 2023-24 PSA World Tour Finals in June.

"The partnership between DigiMithril and WSO to test IntelliReferee marks the beginning of a new era for squash," said Head of WSO, Lee Drew .

"We're very excited by what we've seen throughout the course of the initial testing phase, and the scope of the product seems extremely promising. Together with DigiMithril, we look forward to redefining the future of refereeing with AI," he added

DigiMithril Founder & Chief Executive Pragun Seth said, "IntelliReferee is a pioneer in the intersection of sports and AI and will have a tremendous impact on the game we know and love. At DigiMithril, we're proud and honoured to have partnered with WSO to bring IntelliReferee to professional squash and we are thrilled for what's to come next."

PSA Chief Executive Alex Gough said, "The collaboration between WSO and DigiMithril is an important step for squash. We want to be at the forefront of adopting new technology, and utilising AI in squash refereeing will help modernise the way the game is officiated and result in more accurate outcomes."

PSA World Tour Squash Finals

PSA World Tour Squash Finals

18-22 June 2024, Bellevue, Washington, USA

Defending PSA World Tour Finals champion Nouran Gohar in action during the 2022-23 final.

Bellevue To Host PSA World Tour Finals 2023-24 In June

The prestigious PSA World Tour Finals will head back to the United States for the first time in a decade when Bellevue, Washington hosts the season-ending tournament between June 18-22, 2024 at the Boys and Girls Club Hidden Valley Field House.

The PSA World Tour Finals is the final event of the 2023-24 season and includes both a men’s and women’s tournament featuring eight players each, bringing together all Platinum title winners as well as the reigning PSA World Champions. Any remaining places are allocated to the highest ranked players on the PSA World Tour Finals Leaderboard, with points on offer at all PSA World Tour events during the season.

A round-robin, best-of-three games format is used in the group stage, with the top two from each group qualifying for the knockout semi-finals. The finals revert to the traditional best-of-five games format used in the majority of regular PSA World Tour events.

Bellevue will host the showpiece tournament for the first time, while it will become the first US city to stage the PSA World Tour Finals since Richmond, Virginia in 2014. Bellevue also hosted the men’s 2015 PSA World Championships, which was the first time the World Championships had taken place in the United States.

“We’re excited to bring the PSA World Tour Finals back to the United States for the first time in 10 years and I’m sure the event will provide a fitting spectacle to close out what has been an enthralling season on the PSA World Tour,” said PSA Chief Executive Alex Gough.

“Squash in the United States has enjoyed considerable growth over the past decade. The PSA World Championships have now been staged in the United States four times in the past decade, while the sport will make its long-awaited debut at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.

“The PSA World Tour Finals is the latest professional squash tournament to bring the sport’s greatest athletes to the United States and we can’t wait to see the battles for the titles unfold. I’d like to thank Shabana Khan and YSK Events for their support and we will work closely with their team over the coming weeks to put on an exciting season-ending tournament.”

YSK Events President Shabana Khan said: “YSK Events is thrilled to announce its collaboration with the Professional Squash Association (PSA). This partnership marks a significant milestone in the journey of YSK Events, and the team is immensely grateful for the unwavering support received from both family and the squash community over the years. YSK extends their heartfelt appreciation to Dave Cutler and Rob Harris, whose steadfast support dates back to even before the 2015 World Championships. Their dedication has been instrumental in shaping the success of YSK Events and propelling the sport of squash forward.

“With the Boys and Girls Club Hidden Valley Field House hosting the action and the top-class facilities at the nearby Pro Club being made available to all athletes, the event promises to be a spectacular showcase of squash in Bellevue. By bringing together top-tier athletes and passionate enthusiasts, YSK Events is poised to make history in the realm of squash.”

Only two spots in both the men’s and women’s PSA World Tour Finals draws have been decided, with Egyptian trio Ali Farag, Nour El Sherbini and Hania El Hammamy guaranteed their spots in Bellevue alongside New Zealand’s Paul Coll following their Platinum title wins earlier this season.

There are just five tournaments left before the PSA World Tour Finals commence, with the winners of the upcoming El Gouna International Squash Open, PSA World Championships and the British Open all qualifying automatically. Points are also on offer at both the Manchester Open and QSF 3 event, meaning the battle for qualification is set to go right down to the wire.

Live action from the PSA World Tour Finals will be streamed via  SQUASHTV , while the semi-finals and finals will be shown by the PSA’s  broadcast partners .

Nouran Gohar v Nour El Sherbini

psa world tour final 2023

The first final is a blockbuster clash between the women’s top two players, with World No.1 Nouran Gohar and World No.2 Nour El Sherbini locking horns.

The two Egyptians have met 23 times on the PSA World Tour, with El Sherbini victorious in 16 of those clashes. However defending ToC champion Gohar won their last encounter, which came on US soil, claiming the U.S. Open title 3-1.

Gohar’s passage to the final kicked off with a victory against the US’s Olivia Fiechter, before seeing off her Egyptian compatriots Mariam Metwally and Nour El Tayeb. The 25-year-old then dispatched Joelle King in straight sets in the semi-final.

El Sherbini has only dropped two games in her last four rounds, beating Nadine Shahin and Melissa Alves 3-0, before overcoming home favourite Amanda Sobhy in the quarter-finals and her fellow Egyptian Hania El Hammamy in the last four.

Marwan ElShorbagy v Diego Elias

psa world tour final 2023

The J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions concludes with the men’s final between the No.5 seed Marwan ElShorbagy and No.4 seed Diego Elias.

The Peruvian Puma has the upper-hand from their previous meetings, but ElShorbagy has won the last two – both semi-final triumphs at the Grasshopper Cup and the Oracle Netsuite Open.

ElShorbagy, who’s featuring in his first major final since the CIB Black Ball Squash Open in March 2021, has had an impressive route to the decider – not dropping a single game against Gregoire Marche, Nicolas Mueller, Victor Crouin and Miguel Rodriguez.

Meanwhile Elias, who’s aiming to land his second Platinum win this season, defeated Dimitri Steinmann in round two before beating Egyptian pair Mohamed ElSherbini and Tarek Momen. The 26-year-old then took out the No.1 seed Paul Coll in the semi-final 3-1.

The Xbox PSA World Tour Finals will take place at the Boys and Girls Club Hidden Valley Field House in Bellevue, featuring the top eight male and female squash players globally. Qualification for this prestigious event requires either winning the PSA World Championships, securing victory at one of the eight Platinum-level PSA World Tour events, or achieving a top-eight ranking on the PSA World Tour Finals Leaderboard, ensuring only the highest calibre of competitors. As title sponsor, Xbox will enjoy prominent branding at the Boys and Girls Club Hidden Valley Field House and on the all-glass show court. The tournament will be broadcast to millions of squash enthusiasts worldwide via PSA’s social media platforms, linear TV partners, and the OTT service, SQUASHTV. The Xbox PSA World Tour Finals adopts a distinctive format, dividing players into two groups of four in both the men’s and women’s categories. The group stage employs a round-robin, best-of-three games format, with the top two from each group advancing to the knockout semi-finals. The finals will revert to the traditional best-of-five games format, standard in most PSA World Tour events. Mostafa Asal, Karim Abdel Gawad, Nouran Gohar and Nele Gilis have securing spots at the forthcoming 2023-24 PSA World Tour Finals to be staged at the Boys and Girls Club Hidden Valley Field House in Washington, USA from the 18th to 22nd June. Mostafa Asal performances in recent PSA World Tour events have propelled him to the fourth position in the men’s standings for the 2023-24 PSA World Tour Finals. His impressive runs to the finals in the London Squash Classic and El Gouna International Squash Open and victory at the Black Ball Squash Open adding to his credentials. Mostafa Asal's consistent form marks him as a formidable contender, aiming for an unprecedented fourth consecutive World Tour Finals title. Former champion Karim Abdel Gawad returns to the PSA World Tour Finals for the first time since 2020, overcoming injury setbacks in recent years. His triumph in 2019 underscores his potential, and Karim Abdel Gawad is poised to make a resolute comeback in the upcoming tournament. Nouran Gohar, the women's World No.2, solidifies her berth in Bellevue after clinching consecutive titles at the Black Ball Squash Open and El Gouna International Squash Open. Belgium's Nele Gilis secures her spot at the 2023-24 PSA World Tour Finals for the second consecutive year, buoyed by consistent performances that have anchored her at the World No.4 position. With a potential top-four seeding, Nele Gilis eyes a deeper run in the tournament compared to her previous outing. The race for the top eight spots intensifies as the season progresses, with only a handful of PSA World Tour events remaining for both men and women. Tarek Momen occupies the eighth position in the men's standings but faces stiff competition from Marwan Elshorbagy, currently in ninth place. Similarly, Nour El Tayeb's position in the top eight is under threat from contenders such as Sivasangari Subramaniam and Salma Hany, whose strong performances could potentially alter the standings. The Professional Squash Association ( PSA ) have confirmed that the 2023-24 PSA World Tour Finals will return to the United States after a decade-long hiatus, with Bellevue, Washington, playing host to the prestigious event from the 18th to 22nd June at the Boys and Girls Club Hidden Valley Field House. Marking the culmination of the 2023-24 squash season, this prestigious tournament features both men's and women's competitions, each comprising eight players. The elite roster includes PSA World Tour Platinum title winners and reigning PSA World Squash Champions, with remaining berths allocated to top-ranked players on the PSA World Tour Finals Leaderboard, determined by points earned across the season's PSA World Tour events. The format encompasses a round-robin structure in the group stage, contested over best-of-three games, with the top two from each group progressing to the knockout semi-finals. The finals adopt the traditional best-of-five games format synonymous with regular PSA World Tour events. For Bellevue, this marks a maiden hosting of the showcase event, with the city becoming the first US locale to stage the PSA World Tour Finals since Richmond, Virginia in 2014. Notably, Bellevue previously hosted the 2015 PSA Men’s World Championships, marking the first occurrence of the prestigious event in the United States. Alex Gough, Chief Executive of the PSA, expressed anticipation for the event's return to US soil, citing the nation's burgeoning squash landscape. With squash set to debut at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Gough lauded the event's significance in bolstering the sport's profile stateside. Shabana Khan, President of YSK Events, lauded the collaboration with the PSA, heralding it as a milestone achievement. With the Boys and Girls Club Hidden Valley Field House as the venue and the adjacent Pro Club offering top-notch facilities, Shabana Khan envisaged a spectacular showcase of squash in Bellevue. As the countdown to the PSA World Tour Finals begins, only two slots in each draw have been filled, with Egyptian stalwarts Ali Farag, Nour El Sherbini and Hania El Hammamy securing their places alongside New Zealand's Paul Coll. The remaining places will be determined by the outcomes of the upcoming PSA World Tour tournaments, ensuring a thrilling race to qualification. With just five tournaments remaining on the PSA World Tour calendar, including the El Gouna International Squash Open, PSA World Squash Championships and the British Squash Open, automatic qualification awaits the victors. The Manchester Squash Open and QSF 3 events offer crucial points, intensifying the battle for coveted berths in the season-ending spectacle. Karim Abdel Gawad and Nour El Tayeb have made significant strides in the respective PSA Men’s & Women’s World Tour Finals Leaderboards following their impressive victories at the recent 2023 Ace Malaysia Squash Cup. While Karim Abdel Gawad may not have advanced in the rankings, his remarkable performance at the Ace Malaysia Squash Cup 2023 has substantially narrowed the gap to Tarek Momen, who holds the fourth position, and Paul Coll, who currently occupies the third position. Karim Abdel Gawad secured his second consecutive title at the 2023 Ace Malaysia Squash Cup, putting on a stunning display as he clinched the PSA World Tour Bronze-level event. His dominance was particularly evident in the final where he defeated World No.3 Mostafa Asal in straight games. Nour El Tayeb, who claimed her second title of the season by defeating Rachel Arnold in straight games in the final of the 2023 Ace Malaysia Squash Cup, has significantly closed in on American No.1 Amanda Sobhy, who currently holds the third spot in the women's leaderboard. Looking ahead, the PSA World Tour Finals are scheduled for June 2024, featuring both men's and women's tournaments, with eight players in each. Following his win at the Grasshopper Cup 2023. Karim Abdel Gawad has continued his meteoric rise up the PSA World Rankings and PSA World Tour Finals Leaderboard. His recent triumph at the PSA World Tour Gold-level event has propelled him from a modest 13th position to a formidable fifth place in the latest Leaderboard released by the Professional Squash Association. This impressive feat was not without its challenges, as Karim Abdel Gawad secured notable victories against the formidable duo of Mohamed El Shorbagy, brother Marwan ElShorbagy and the World No.9 Joel Makin. Joel Makin has also claimed a well-deserved one-spot advancement, now residing comfortably in sixth place on PSA World Tour Finals Leaderboard. Furthermore, Baptiste Masotti, who conquered the returning star Mostafa Asal at the Grasshopper Cup 2023 has made an impressive entry into the top 15 for the first time in the 2023-24 squash season. The existing top four positions in the men's rankings remain unaltered, with Ali Farag, Diego Elias, Paul Coll, and Tarek Momen holding steady. On the women's front, Nour El Sherbini continues to assert her dominance as the World No.1. Her victory in the 2023-24 season, securing her third title at the Grasshopper Cup 2023 has only fortified her position at the summit. Hania El Hammamy, the fellow finalist, maintains her second-place standing. A notable shift can be observed as England's No.1, Georgina Kennedy and Nele Gilis both surpass Nouran Gohar in the standings. Meanwhile, Egypt's Rowan Elaraby, following her commendable performance in Zurich that saw her reach the quarter-finals, has risen an impressive six places in the PSA World Tour Finals Leaderboard. Looking ahead, the PSA World Tour Finals, scheduled for June 2024, promises to be a captivating showcase of squash prowess. There has been no movement this week to the men's leaderboard due to the absence of any PSA World Tour events. Ali Farag continues to lead the pack, followed by Diego Elias from Peru and Egypt's Tarek Momen. The fourth spot sees a three-way tie between Welshman Joel Makin, Egypt's Mazen Hesham and England's Mohamed ElShorbagy, while Paul Coll and Scotland's Greg Lobban round out the top eight spots. Hania El Hammamy has secured her place at the highly-anticipated 2023-24 PSA World Tour Finals, following her win at the QTerminals Qatar Squash Classic. The dynamic Egyptian squash star now joins World No.1’s Ali Farag and Nour El Sherbini, both of whom emerged victorious at the Paris Squash 2023 Platinum event. In the grand tapestry of squash, the Paris triumphs of Norab El Sherbini and Ali Farag serve as a prelude to what promises to be a scintillating 2023-24 PSA squash season, where each victory and every point scored becomes a vital step towards the ultimate showdown at the PSA World Tour Finals to be staged in June 2024. As the squash world eagerly anticipates the forthcoming battles and rivalries, these remarkable squash players have etched their names into the annals of squash history as the inaugural qualifiers for the illustrious event. In August 2018, the PSA initiated a transformative shift in the structure of their international circuit of squash events. The erstwhile World Series tournaments were supplanted by the fresh and dynamic PSA World Tour, a paradigm delineated into four distinct tournament-tiers. At the peak, the PSA Platinum tier boasts substantial prize pools ranging from $170,500 to $300,000. Prize money for the PSA Gold tier events is between $90,000 to $110,500 with player compensation for PSA Silver tier events between $70,000 and $85,000. PSA Bronze tier events, while no less competitive, offers prize money ranging from $45,000 to $55,000. The 2023–24 PSA World Tour unfurls as a tapestry of squash excellence, where players traverse the tiers of Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze in pursuit of glory. The dynamic structure ensures that the sport's leading squash players are pushed to their limits, culminating in the prestigious PSA World Tour Finals.
