5 things to do in Dannok, the amazing Thai town you’ve never heard of

  • By SG Magazine
  • Feb 19, 2018

Dannok, a border town between Malaysia and Thailand, is still largely unknown to most of the world. Overshadowed by more popular cities such as Bangkok and Hatyai, Dannok remained for many years as a quiet place one passed through from the Sadao Customs and Immigration. Recently, however, the town has shown slow but steady progress in making the place more tourist-friendly.

Dannok is a small town, perfect for a day trip from popular cities. If you’re driving, park at the duty-free complex in Bukit Kayu Hitam and walk to the checkpoint. You won’t have to take a tuk-tuk to get anywhere—everything is reachable on foot, but have sunblock and umbrellas at hand if you melt easily. Start your journey before noon and you’ll be satisfied by night time. Here’s a list of things to do while in this darling place for the day.

1. Raid the convenience stores

  A post shared by Thailand_Direct (@thailand_direct) on Jul 20, 2017 at 8:21am PDT

Shopping in Dannok is a pretty unorthodox but fun experience. There are no malls here, but don’t let that put you off. What Dannok does have is a proliferation of convenience stores, from 7-Elevens to their local cousins. There are so many you’ll literally find another every few meters.

Convenience store shopping sounds odd, but it’s the best way to get the Thai snacks you can’t live without. We’re talking Tao Ke Noi seaweed, Thai instant noodles (they sell these in bulk and individual packs too), chips, and Pocky. You’ll find that most snacks are much cheaper in Dannok than anywhere else because they’re manufactured locally. Great deals on groceries and other essentials are also to be had.

2. Go on a street food hunt

A post shared by Muhammad Fahmi B Najmi (@fahmie_chor) on Jul 23, 2017 at 5:00am PDT

Foodies will rejoice at the accessibility of the street food here. All you need to do is walk—both sides of the main road have no shortage of delicious fare. There are already stalls literally steps away from Customs, but do wander around as there are lots more options. Within 200 meters of the Oliver Hotel, you’ll find many stalls scattered around, selling every kind of food from som tam to pad ka pow. There’s also a morning market, a good choice if you want to do as the locals do.

Be sure to sample the famous mango rice; there’s also a durian and mixed version for those who can’t decide which fruit they like better. Fried or grilled chicken (kai yang) with glutinous rice is a popular choice, as is phat kaphrao (spicy minced chicken with basil over rice).

3. Relax in a massage parlor

, 5 things to do in Dannok, the amazing Thai town you’ve never heard of

Even if you’ve only got a day, that shouldn’t stop you from finding inner peace under the professional hands of a masseuse. You’re in Thailand, after all. Head to Mei Spa in He Jia Grand Hotel (42 Moo 7, Karnjanaruji 2 Road, Samnakkam, Songkhla, 90320 Sadao, Thailand) for a great oil massage with unlimited usage of spa facilities after your session. You’ll feel completely rejuvenated and ready to continue exploring without any soreness or pain, as the staff is all experienced.

Alternatively, if you’d prefer an establishment not in a hotel, there’s the Gaya Thai Spa   (16-18, Rattanakorn 2 Road, Samnak Kham, Amphoe Sadao 902320 Thailand), opposite the Oliver (you’ll find the Oliver a very handy landmark if you get lost). Simple but clean and unpretentious, this is the place to go for traditional foot massages that will bring back a spring to your step.

4. Experience the Asian Cultural Village

  A post shared by @keongmengkeong on Jul 14, 2017 at 6:45pm PDT

The newest attraction in town, the Village (888/333 Moo 7, Kanchanavanich Road, Samnakkham, Sadao 90320, Thailand) is suitable for the whole family, and will undeniably become the best part of your trip. This expansive park has over 10 separate highlights, guaranteeing a great time for everyone.

Kids will adore the aptly named Panda and Lovers’ Park, where about 50-odd panda statues dot a serene garden- all of them hand-painted. The Dinosaur Park is one of the main attractions and should not be missed for those who know their velociraptors from their Triceratops, as the exhibits are all larger than life, and the roars frighteningly real. There’s also the Wu Lin village, featuring two long rows of traditional Chinese wooden shophouses. Rows of red lanterns lend a festive look to the place, where you can check out each gorgeously decorated room, and maybe even try on some pretty traditional costumes for a small fee. If you get hungry, fear not, as there’s a seafood restaurant and food stalls in the park itself.

For shopping, there’s a duty-free store selling all kinds of Thai food products, all nicely packaged for your convenience. A forested area with a small huts for local vendors to sell their handmade crafts also makes for a unique experience . By night, most of the attractions light up brilliantly- a true sight to behold. Besides all these, there’s also a mini zoo, two temples, waterpark… we could go on, but you’ll have to come and see this amazing place for yourself.

5. Have a fabulous Thai meal at the Water View Restaurant

You can’t miss having a satisfying meal while in Dannok, and if going as a large group or a family, Thai-Chinese restaurants will be your best bet. For lunch or dinner with a view, the Water View Restaurant more than provides. It’s in a remote area near the border, so charter a tuk-tuk to get there.

They serve delicious seafood and authentic local favorites. Have a few items in mind before ordering, ask your waitress for accurate pricing and prepare to be wowed. Orders come by boat (yes, really) as the restaurant is stretched along the banks of a lake. With your own private hut to feast in, you’ll appreciate the peaceful atmosphere in the afternoon, and the twinkling lights at night.

Even with all that said, the greatest part about Water View still has to be its food. Prepared by Thai chefs, each dish is expertly spiced and cooked to perfection, from the fried fish to the cashew chicken. This also means no watered-down tom yam kung- you’ll face the whole heat of the chilies here. Bring a crowd, place your orders, and have some Singha while just enjoying the natural surroundings.

have a great trip Marionette..

Informative article and interesting, what always amazes me is how quick Thai people react at an opportunity as it was here after the last bombs in Hat Yai many nightlife stuff was immediately shifted to Danok. One more thing keep in mind the border is closed from 11 pm to 5 am so no way to get south deep in the night. Also to clear one thing > dont make the Thai uniformed shine in a a dark light, I pass through this border for more than 20 years and NEVER anyone asked me for a "gift". I don't believe what your sister told you or maybe it was a misunderstanding since non of the Thai border people speaks English and does your sister speak Thai? Instead you can have a look here: http://www.nightlife.thailandmagic.com/p/danok-nightlife-girls-ladyboys.html This is why 90% of the Malaysian guys have a good time here.

Tantalizing Top 10 Thai Street Foods

Tantalizing Top 10 Thai Street Foods

Thai Street Foods are the best when you want something to fill your tummy but not a sit-down meal in a restaurant.

You can grab a snack from a Thai 7 Eleven just as easily as you can perch yourself on the simple plastic tables and chairs for diners.

Thai food culture, especially Thai Street Foods, is lively, communal, and rewarding for those willing to try new dishes.

Look out for these favorite healthy dishes when you’re browsing Thailand’s night markets and street stalls.

A walk at night looking for the top Thai Street Foods spells temptation from the incredible smells of grilling meats, chicken, and shellfish over hot coals from street foods stalls.

The juicy grilled Thai Grilled Pork (Moo Ping หมูปิ้ง) and Thai Grilled Chicken (Gai Yang ไก่ย่าง) make my mouth water even as I write this.

It’s a fabulous eating trip that makes me hungry all over again when I recall the sweet, creamy desserts.

What’s The Tastiest Insect Cart Bug Snack In Thailand?

The Top 10 Thai Street Foods list is one of my absolute favorites, and I must eat it whenever I visit Thailand.

Feel free to share if you have another list of must-eats hawker fares.

Let’s Start With The Best Thai Street Foods

#1 Thai Grilled Chicken (Gai Yang ไก่ย่าง)

Thai-style grilled chicken is one of the tastiest Thai street foods you’ll never get enough of eating.

The marinade has cilantro, white pepper, garlic, and fish sauce, and the grilled chicken bursts with flavor!

I practically drool most of the time as I watch the vendor baste both sides of the chicken in the marinade.

The best way to eat this is straight off the coals of a street vendor’s BBQ.

Gai Yang ไก่ย่าง (Thai Grilled Chicken)

#2 Thai Grilled Pork (Moo Ping หมูปิ้ง)

Moo Ping, or grilled pork on a skewer, is the answer to why pork tastes so darn good.

It is the simplest way to prepare the best cut of pork marinated with coriander root, pepper, and garlic.

Thais use Milk as a pork tenderizer.

The pork slices are threaded onto the skewers and grilled over the flame on a charcoal BBQ for that smoky, charred smell.

Pro Tip: Eat that with Sticky Rice.

Moo Ping (Thai Grilled Pork Skewers)

#3 Thai Deep Fried Crispy Chicken Skin (หนังไก่ทอดกรอบ)

Thai Deep-Fried Crispy Chicken Skin is a complimentary snack popular in Thailand as hot chips are in McD.

The best-fried chicken skin is remarkably light, airy, and not oily.

It is salty with savory notes of umami-boosting soy sauce in the batter.

My Thai friends said it is mixed with cilantro powder and garlic powder.

Thai Deep Fried Chicken Skin (nhang kai thod)

#4 Thai Boat Noddles (Doy Kuay Teow Reua ต้อยก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรือ)

Thai Boat Noodles has a robust, flavorful soup made of rich beef broth intensified by a fresh cow’s blood splash!

Boat noodles are the most flavorsome of all Thai noodle soups.

Traditionally, boat noodles are served from small boats gliding along Thailand’s floating markets.

The roadside stall that I like is a short distance from the Sadao border.

There’s a choice of beef or pork with meatballs, sliced meat, and pork liver.

I like the dark, robust blood soup, which has a strong flavor.

The noodles are topped with fresh herbs and soft-boiled eggs.

Doy Kuay Teow Reua (ต้อยก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรือ)

#5 Thai Wanton Noodles (Ba Mee บะหมี่แห้ง)

Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong have their version of Wanton Noodles .

The Thai dry version is in a light soy sauce with pork lard oil and topped with chili flakes.

The egg noodles are delicious, springy, and drier with minimal seasoning.

Thai Wonton Noodles have a distinct taste that I enjoy.

The portion is large, and the hawkers are not stingy with the ingredients, making it quite a filling bowl of noodles.

You’ll love the meatier bites of regular char siew and plenty of wantons with plump minced pork fillings.

If you’re in Dan Nok, this is the stall you need to try.

Thai Wonton Noodles (Ba Mee)

#6 Pad Thai Noodle (ผัดไทยกุ้งสด)

Pad Thai Noodles are one of the cheapest satisfying meals in Thailand.

The noodles are flavorful and delicious.

It’s a staple of the Thai diet and is eaten as street food by many local eateries.

The flavor of Pad Thai Noodles is unique from the Thai ‘fish sauce’ that gives it a special zing.

Pad Thai Noodles are a fast and easy meal to prepare and eat.

Shrimp, garlic, red chili pepper, and bean sprouts are the ingredients.

As you eat it with a lot of fresh herbs and vegetables, it is nutritious too.

For a luxurious version, sometimes meat is added to this simple dish.

It is cooked with chicken, fresh shrimp, crab, or as a vegetarian dish.

The wide range of textures in every mouthful of Pad Thai makes the experience enjoyable.

You get to bite on soft noodles and crunch on raw fresh bean sprouts and green chives.

Due to their affordability, range of textures, and flavor complexities, food bloggers highly praise these noodles.

A popular topping is a cut-up wedge of lime and chopped peanuts.

Pad Thai Noodle – Nut Allergy Alert

Pro Tip: If you have a nut allergy, it is best to avoid Pad Thai altogether.

#7 Deep-Fried Green Papaya Salad Recipe (Som Tum ส้มตำไทย)

Deep-Fried Som Tam (Thai Salad).

It tastes like a light and airy Thai tempura served with a wickedly delicious sweet, spicy, and sour dipping sauce poured on top.

This fried version keeps the papaya crisp and from getting soggy.

Deep-Fried Som Tam (Thai Salad)

#8 Sweet Drumstick Pineapples

Thailand mini pineapples are sweet and crunchy ; you can eat the stem, too.

Found in all street markets across Thailand, these are sold with a salt chili powder to dip in.

You will be mesmerized to see how the Thais cut out the eyes from the pineapple.

I swear I’ve never tasted sweeter and juicer pineapples than the baby whole Thai pineapples.

Mini pineapple looks exactly like their larger cousins.

Taste-wise, the flavor is more intense, and the flesh is a lot sweeter.

The best part is the inner core of the mini pineapple is not too hard or fibrous.

It is edible.

These pineapples will taste excellent in salsa or as a kerabu or tart filling.

#9 Thai Sweet Sticky Rice With Mango  (Khao Neeo Mamuang ข้าวเหนียวมะม่วง)

This simple Thai dessert is addictive.

It consists of steamed glutinous sticky rice served with fragrant, tender, sweet slices of mango.

Drenched and seasoned with salty-sweet coconut milk, the cream will make an addict out of you.

The secret is in the sauce.

Make that by mixing 1/2 cup coconut milk, one tablespoon sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and tapioca starch in a saucepan and bringing to a boil.

Place the sticky rice on a serving dish.

Prepare mango by cutting it open and slicing it into bite-size pieces.

Arrange the mangos on top of the rice.

Spoon over the coconut crème and top that with toasted sesame seeds.

Khao Neeo Mamuang (Thai Sweet Sticky Rice with Mango)

#10 Thai Street Foods Signature Coconut Ice Cream (ไอติมกะทิ)

Dangerously delicious, I cannot have enough coconut ice cream in Thailand.

This wonder has a cooked sticky glutinous rice base with white bread cubes topped with six small coconut ice-cream scoops.

The topping is candied pineapple, fresh coconut flesh, peanuts, drizzled with condensed milk, and raspberry jam.

It cost 30 THB in a regular ice cream container and 40 THB served in a coconut shell.
