Best Cruise to Northern Lights NORWAY in 2024-2025 (Comparison Guide)

cruise to northern lights norway

Considering a cruise to northern lights Norway in 2024-2025? In this guide, we share tips to help you choose the best cruise for your needs, and compare the most popular short and long northern lights cruises in Norway taking bookings.

With so many cruise options to choose from for your Norway aurora vacation, you may find it difficult to decide which one to book or research further. Don’t stress. In this article, we’ll help you narrow down your search. First, we explain what you should look for when choosing the best cruise for your needs. We then discuss a few of the most popular northern lights cruises you can book now, with an overview of their itinerary, inclusions, price and destinations.

Read on to learn more and find your perfect northern lights cruise…

How to Choose a Cruise to Northern Lights Norway

If your main motivation for taking one of these cruises is to see the Northern Lights, it is important to mention that as long as you choose the right time of year to travel to Norway to see the aurora (most importantly, not in summer) then no cruise will be better than the other for seeing the lights.

All of the cruises listed here will travel to regions where the aurora is visible, so as long as you step out at night and look to the sky, you will have just as much chance of seeing the lights as passengers on any other comparable cruise in the region.

Rather, we suggest you base your Northern Lights Norwegian cruise choice on:

  • amenities the cruise offers (eg pool, gym, bars, kids activities)
  • types of passengers it caters towards (eg singles, families)
  • duration and price range (budget, luxury)
  • departure point (eg UK, Norway, Finland)
  • destinations and stopover points
  • other inclusions such as flights, tours, land travel etc.

While we have marked some cruises in this article as ‘best’ in certain categories, this is still just our opinion based on the most popular cruises available. However, the reality is that the ‘best’ cruise is whichever fulfils your criteria. All cruises will offer a good opportunity for you to see the northern lights, but remember, regardless of which cruise you book, it is still up to you to make the effort to get out at night and look for them.

Final Thoughts

This concludes our list of the ‘Best Cruise to Northern Lights NORWAY’ that are taking bookings for the upcoming season. This is not an exhaustive list, but does cover the most popular cruises available.

All cruises offer a good chance of seeing the northern lights, but of course, the longer the cruise the better chance you will have, simply because you are spending more time in the auroral zone. The main difference between the cruises comes down to the duration, onboard facilities and other inclusions such as land activities.

We suggest you base your decision on choosing a cruise on those other factors, particularly budget and duration. Aside from duration, most of these northern lights Norwegian cruises offer basically the same chance of seeing the lights; all you need to do is make sure you step out on deck in the evenings to look for them.

10 Best Northern Lights Cruises

What's more epic than seeing the aurora borealis in person? Viewing it from a cruise ship.

If seeing the northern lights is on your to-do list, you've likely already looked into the best places to catch a glimpse of them: northern destinations like Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and Scandinavia, among others. But have you ever considered seeing them by sea rather than by land?

It turns out many cruise lines offer specially-themed sailings to many of those same destinations. Cruising is also a particularly appealing option for northern lights seekers since the ships can access remote areas far from light pollution, allowing guests to view the aurora borealis in its full brilliance.

Here are 10 of the best cruises you can take that'll help you meet your goal of seeing the northern lights.

  • Embark on your northern lights cruise during the auroral season, generally between late September and late March, when the skies above the Arctic Circle experience longer periods of darkness.

Viking: In Search of the Northern Lights

RelaxFoto.de / Getty Images

On Viking's In Search of the Northern Lights cruise, a luxurious Viking ocean ship transports guests for 13 days from London to Amsterdam, then up the coast of Norway, and north of the Arctic Circle to Tromsø and Alta before heading south to Bergen. The Norwegian fjords are a sight to behold, and if they're paired with the northern lights, that's all the better. The sailings run from January to March when daylight is limited in the Arctic Circle, which makes for prime aurora-viewing opportunities. Rates start from $5,299 per person in 2025 and 2026. Some routes travel in reverse if you'd prefer to end in London. It's also worth noting that Viking is an adults-only cruise line.

Aurora Expeditions: Northern Lights Explorer

Courtesy of Aurora Expeditions

Considering the cruise line is named after the atmospheric phenomenon, it should come as no surprise that it offers a Northern Lights Explorer itinerary. The trip starts with one night in the northern Norwegian city of Kirkenes before you sail south along the coast to Tromsø, then head back north to the remote archipelago of Jan Mayen (a polar bear hotspot), over to the scenic fjords of East Greenland, and around the northern half of Iceland. Aurora Expeditions offers just one of these sailings per year in September. Rates start from $19,795 per person in 2024.

Hurtigruten: The Coastal Express

Hurtigruten is something of an outlier in this group because it doesn't offer specific northern lights itineraries. Instead, the routes of this Norwegian ferry company just happen to traverse the perfect latitudes to see the aurora borealis. Hurtigruten is so confident you'll see the northern lights during the auroral season (between September 20, 2024, and March 25, 2025) that if they don't show up on a sailing of 11 days or more, the company's Northern Lights Promise means you'll get a free six-day southbound or seven-day northbound cruise to try again. For the best odds of seeing the northern lights, we suggest the 12-day round-trip Coastal Express itinerary from Bergen to Kirkenes (and back to Bergen). Rates start from $2,024 per person in 2025.

Quark Expeditions: Under the Northern Lights

Courtesy of Quark Expeditions

Specializing in polar voyages, Quark Expeditions knows a thing or two about the northern lights, which is why the company offers an aurora sailing each fall. This 12-day itinerary cruises from Reykjavik, Iceland, to Greenland and back from late September into early October. Since the majority of the voyage takes place above the Arctic Circle, the odds of seeing the natural phenomenon are high, especially as solar activity tends to peak around the autumnal and vernal equinoxes in September and March, respectively. And if they don't show, well, you still get to explore Iceland's Westfjords and Greenland's eastern shores — and that's a worthwhile journey in itself. Rates start from $8,396 per person in 2024.

Oceanwide Expeditions: Northern Iceland and Greenland

Courtesy of Oceanwide Expeditions

If you don't have two or three weeks to take off work to go northern lights watching, consider Oceanwide Expeditions' eight-night aurora borealis sailings from northern Iceland to Greenland and back. The adventure begins in Akureyri before heading for Greenland's breathtaking Scoresby Sund, the largest fjord system in the world. If you do have a little more time, opt for the 13-night Spitsbergen - Northeast Greenland - Aurora Borealis itinerary, which embarks in Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago before sailing to Greenland and down to northern Iceland. Both take place in the late summer into early fall, as darkness returns to the skies in the Arctic. Rates for the eight-night itinerary start from $4,600 per person, while the 13-night version starts at $6,650 per person, for 2024 sailings.

Cunard: Norway and Northern Lights

Each fall, the ships in Cunard's legendary fleet head north for Norway, where guests are treated to scenic cruising along the coast. The 12-night Norway and Northern Lights sailings depart from Southampton, England, before traveling to Alesund, Tromsø, Narvik, and Stavanger, sailing through majestic fjords along the way. Since the ships sail this itinerary from September to March, the skies will be dark enough to see the northern lights, should they decide to appear. In 2024, the Queen Mary 2 and the upcoming Queen Anne will take the reins, while the Queen Victoria will also set sail in 2025 and 2026. Rates start from $2,103 per person in 2024.

P&O Cruises: Norway

Courtesy of P&O Cruises

British cruise line P&O operates 12-night sailings to Norway year-round. And during the auroral season, there's a strong chance you'll see the northern lights while onboard. Guests embark in Southampton, England, before sailing north to Norway, traveling as far as Tromsø and Alta, north of the Arctic Circle. We recommend splurging on a room with windows for the best northern lights viewing options. However, those in interior cabins can always run up on deck, which you should do to witness the full grandeur of the atmospheric phenomenon. Rates start from $1,680 per person in 2024.

Havila: Round Voyage

Courtesy of Havila Voyages

Like the Hurtigruten cruise mentioned above, Havila's Round Voyage follows the Coastal Express route between Bergen and Kirkenes, stopping in 34 ports during its 12-day adventure up and down the Norwegian coast. The company also has a Northern Lights Promise for guests visiting between October 1 and March 31, although in this case, the replacement six- or seven-day cruise must happen within a month of your return on the original one. 2024's rates on these newer, more environmentally-friendly ships start at just $1,500 per person for an interior room or $2,280 for an exterior room.

Saga: Norway and the Northern Lights

WanRu Chen / Getty Images

British company Saga offers 16-night cruises aboard the Spirit of Discovery from its U.K. base in Portsmouth. The route includes an overnight stay in Tromsø, as well as stops in Alesund, Trøndheim, Honningsvåg, Alta, Bergen, and a side-quest to Flåm, a beautiful inland area known for its epic views of the Norwegian fjords. Wildlife experts from the ORCA European conservation team will be available to help you spot whales, dolphins, and other animals as you sail through their natural environment. Each cabin comes with a private balcony so you'll have incredible views throughout your trip. Prices for 2025's all-inclusive sailings start at $8,087 per person.

Ponant: Nordic Discoveries and Traditions

Courtesy of Ponant

Ponant’s 11-day Norway cruises actually include round-trip flights between Paris and Tromsø, where the journey begins, so you could theoretically make this a two-in-one vacation with a short stint in Paris on either end. From Tromsø, ships make their way south to Narvik and Reine before heading north to Hammerfest, west to Bjornoya, east to Honningsvag, and back to Tromsø via Alta. Rates for sailings in 2025 begin at $11,880 per person.

Tom Cruise, Mayor Bass help Paris hand over Olympics to Los Angeles for 2028

AP logo

SAINT-DENIS, France -- Paris closed out two and a half extraordinary weeks of Olympic sports and emotion with a boisterous, star-studded show in France's national stadium on Sunday, handing over hosting duties for the Summer Games to the next city in line: Los Angeles in 2028.

In a display of Hollywood showmanship, Tom Cruise descended from the top of the French stadium to the "Mission Impossible" theme song, shaking hands with athletes, before taking the Olympic flag from star gymnast Simone Biles, putting it on the back of a motorcycle and driving out of the stadium.

In a prerecorded ride past the Eiffel Tower, Cruise drove his bike onto a plane and then skydived out of it over the Hollywood Hills. Three rings were added to the O's of the famed Hollywood sign to create five interlaced Olympic rings.

It was just one of the highlights of the closing ceremony that put a final flourish to Paris' first Games in a century, with an artistic show that celebrated Olympic themes, golden fireworks and thousands of athletes partying into the night.

In their enthusiasm, crowds of athletes rushed the stage during a highlight video from the Games, and stadium announcements in French and English urged them to double back. Some of them stayed, surrounding Grammy-winning French pop-rock band Phoenix as they played, before security and volunteers cleared the stage.

For Los Angeles, topping Paris could be mission impossible. The French capital made spectacular use of its cityscape for its first Games in 100 years. The Eiffel Tower and other iconic monuments became Olympic stars in their own right, serving as backdrops and in some cases venues for competitions.

But LA was bringing star power of its own: singer Billie Eilish, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, rapper and Paris Olympics mainstay Snoop Dogg - plus longtime collaborator Dr. Dre - performed at Venice Beach and Long Beach as part of the handover from the City of Light to the City of Angels.

Each of the music artists is a California native, including H.E.R., who sang the U.S. national anthem live at the Stade de France, which hosted Olympic track and field and rugby sevens. The audience was expected to top 70,000 people.

At the start of the show, the stadium crowd roared as French swimmer Léon Marchand, dressed in a suit and tie instead of the swim trunks he wore to win four golds, was shown on the giant screens collecting the Olympic flame from the Tuileries Gardens in Paris.

There, the Olympic cauldron - powered by electricity instead of fossil fuels - had lit up the French capital for the duration of the Games, thrilling crowds by rising into the skies on a balloon every night.

As a delicate pink sunset gave way to night, athletes marched into the stadium waving the flags of their 205 countries and territories - a display of global unity in a world gripped by global tensions and conflicts, including those in Ukraine and Gaza. The stadium screens carried the words, "Together, united for peace."

With the 329 medal events finished, the expected 9,000 athletes - many wearing their shiny medals - and team staffers filled the arena, dancing and cheering to thumping beats.

Unlike in Tokyo in 2021, where the Games were pushed back a year by the COVID-19 pandemic and largely stripped of fans, athletes and the more than 70,000 spectators at the Paris arena celebrated with abandon, singing together as Queen's anthem "We Are the Champions" blared. Multiple French athletes crowd-surfed. U.S. team members jumped up and down in their Ralph Lauren jackets.

In a speech, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach - who sat with French President Emmanuel Macron during the show - said the Games "can create a cultural peace that inspires the world," noting that the athletes "respected each other even if your countries are divided by conflict."

The national stadium, France's largest, was one of the targets of Islamic State gunmen and suicide bombers who killed 130 people in and around Paris on Nov. 13, 2015. The joy and celebrations that swept Paris during the Games as Marchand and other French athletes racked up 64 medals - 16 of them gold - marked a major watershed in the city's recovery from that night of terror.

The closing ceremony saw the awarding of the last medals - each embedded with a chunk of the Eiffel Tower. Fittingly for the first Olympics that aimed for gender parity, they all went to women - the gold, silver and bronze medalists from the women's marathon earlier Sunday.

The women's marathon took the spot of the men's race that traditionally closed out previous Games. The switch was part of efforts in Paris to make the Olympic spotlight shine more brightly on the sporting feats of women. Paris was also where women first made their Olympic debut, at the Games of 1900.

The U.S. team again topped the medal table, with 126 in all and 40 of them gold. Three were courtesy of gymnast Simone Biles, who made a resounding return to the top of the Olympic podium after prioritizing her mental health instead of competition in Tokyo in 2021.

Unlike Paris' rain-drenched but exuberant opening ceremony that played out along the Seine River in the heart of the city, the closing ceremony's artistic portion took a more sober approach, with space-age and Olympic themes.

A golden-shrouded figure dropped spider-like from the skies into a darkened world of smoke and swirling stars. Olympic symbols were celebrated, including the flag of Greece, birthplace of the ancient Games, and the five interlaced Olympic rings, lit up in white in the arena where tens of thousands of lights glittered like fireflies.

Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of both shows, had faced blowback for portions of the opening ceremony, which were assailed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, French bishops and others who felt they poked fun at Christianity.

Jolly and other members of his creative team filed police complaints over death threats and online vitriol targeting them and some of opening show's performers.

Critics jumped to the conclusion that a segment featuring drag queens and a DJ who is also an LGBTQ+ icon had parodied "The Last Supper," Leonardo Da Vinci's painting showing Jesus Christ. Jolly and his team repeatedly insisted that was never their intention and got backing from Macron, who described himself as "outraged and sad" by the backlash against them.

Rybachy Peninsula – one of the most beautiful places in Russia

No comments · Posted by Sergei Rzhevsky in Nature , Regions , Travel

The Rybachy Peninsula is the northernmost part of continental European Russia located in Murmansk Oblast and washed by the Barents Sea. The coastal waters are rich in fish (herring, cod, capelin, etc.), hence its name meaning “Fishing Peninsula”.

Despite its northern location, it is the warmest place in the entire Russian north. Off the coast of the peninsula, the sea doesn’t freeze all year round thanks to the warm North Cape Current. The Rybachy Peninsula on Google Maps . Photos by: Sergey Korolev .
