  • Chevron down Why You'll Love This

You’re taken to a private game reserve, 20 minutes from the town centre, where you’re welcomed with refreshment and a detailed safety talk.

Your next challenge on your African elephant ride is to mount these enormous creatures, which are taught to walk alongside you, and with the help of a wooden platform that is almost level with the elephant, you climb on top and sit in a custom built saddle. You then meet your “Induna” who is the elephant’s handler and driver. Each Induna has spent years forming a close bond with their elephant, learning their character traits and behaviour patterns. Your Induna also serves as your guide to the African bush.

You get to learn about these amazing creatures through touching, hearing, smelling, and seeing them up-close, which is an indescribable experience. Although an elephant is huge you’ll be surprised to learn that they’re extremely silent allowing you to experience the wildlife in a much more natural way.

Finally, you’re shown a short video of your safari experience which you have the opportunity to purchase afterwards. Then a wonderful cooked bush breakfast or snacks are served, depending on the time of day, after which you’re returned to town.

Elephants in the water at an Elephant Encounter activity in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

After the informative presentations, take a walk alongside these magnificent animals - an opportunity to interact with the elephant on a personal level. Observe their individual behaviour up close while marvelling at their massive sizes, see how they interact with each other, and note the special relationship which the elephants have with their keepers.

At the end of the interaction, you will be offered refreshments and eats at The Wallow, while you cool down enjoying a view of the Masuwe River and beyond.

Elephant Encounter - Our Opinion

The elephant back safari activity used to be very popular, however due to changing attitudes around the world, regarding human/animal interactions, the custodians of these elephant decided to withdraw the rides in favour of an "encounter". Elephants live to around 60 years old and even more in captivity, so the custodians, who rescued these animals in the first place, had to find a way to cover the enormous costs of sustaining these animals, now that the revenue from the rides had gone.

The elephant encounter became the way, and although it might not contain the excitement of sitting on the back of these enormous animals, it does still offer you the opportunity to get up close to these animals, look right into their eyes and get a waft of their pungent odour. You feel bonded to them. You get to learn about them and find out the real story behind this whole conservation initiative. If you at all interested or care about elephants, then we strongly recommend this activity.

Elephant back safari is a unique safari where guests get to ride tamed wild elephants and view the game close from the back of an elephant. Rides start at Zambezi  camp near Thorntree lodge approximately 10km from Livingstone the proceed to Mosi-Oa-Tunya National park offering guests game views of the Zambezi River and the wildlife.

Takes place within the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park on the banks of the Zambezi River located approximately 10 km from Livingstone.

Zambezi Elephant Trails has established Zambia’s first “Elephant Camp” offering a once in a lifetime insight into these gentle giants.

Six african elephants, Madinda, Marula, Mashumbi, Lewa, Danny and Bop offer guests a chance to meet, touch and learn about elephants and to understand their willingness to act under instruction.

The training techniques used by Zambezi Elephant Trails are based on the “perform and reward “ method as opposed to the controversial “discipline and submission” technique commonly associated with Asian elephants.

Tour Information

On mounting the Elephants, the Safari begins. The trails lead through riverine bush and shallow parts of the Zambezi River onto the islands. Halfway through the ride, guests will dismount and interact with the Elephants on the ground.

During interaction, the guide will give an informative talk on the African Elephant and its relationship with man.

Each Elephant is under the charge of a Handler – the Guide carries a first aid kit and handheld radio.

The Safari ends with a full English Breakfast or good choice of snacks (depending which safari is booked) after which guests may view a video of their personal Elephant experience. Videos are available for purchase and will be delivered to guests’ hotels that evening or the following morning (depending on which Safari is booked).

A Walk Among Giants: Elephant Encounter Victoria Falls

Walk with Giants Price

Walk with Giants Elephant Encounter – US$135.00 per person

Activity Description

One of the most incredible wildlife experiences available in Victoria Falls. Seeing elephants on a game drive is amazing. Meeting them as individuals, watching their interactions and witnessing their behavior in such an intimate way is truly indescribable.

These rescued elephants have been in the care of their keepers for most of their lives. Previously they helped earn their keep and spread awareness through elephant back safaris. However, with changing attitudes towards human animal interactions around the world, their human herd members opted to move away from the riding, and rather offer the Walk with Giants Elephant Encounter. A unique fundraising and awareness opportunity where you don’t just see elephants, but actually meet them.

Operated on a private game reserve this special elephant herd spend their days foraging naturally and living a pretty normal elephant life, under the supervision of their human herd members. Your activity starts under the cool thatching of an open air Boma overlooking the elephant’s favorite watering hole.  Meet the guys that have dedicated their lives to the care and wellbeing of some pretty incredible animals.

After a conservation talk and safety instructions head out into the bush on foot to meet these gentle giants and experience them in their natural environment. Under the constant supervision of their human herd members, witness firsthand the special bond shared between them.

Listen to their intimate stories of the animals that they work with and the conservation message these elephants help to spread. Acting as ambassadors not only to their species, but ecosystems as a whole.

Walk with Giants Activity Requirements

Age Limit : 5 years and older, Note* Parents/Guardians of children under 16 must be present and available to sign indemnity forms Minimum Height : No minimum height Maximum Height : No maximum height Fitness Level : No Fitness Requirement. Maximum Weight : No Maximum Weight. Experience Level : No Experience Requirement.

Seasonal Activity : The Walk with Giants is not a seasonal activity and is done throughout the year. What to wear : Clients are advised to wear comfortable clothing items. Secure footwear such as hiking or running shoes are a must.

What to bring: Clients are advised to bring sunscreen, mosquito repellent, sun hat, camera and binoculars.

How safe is the Walk with Giants Elephant Encounter?

Like any activity involving animals there is always an element of risk. However there has never been an accident in the time this activity has been running. A big reason for this is that the encounter is all about experiencing these animals in their natural environment, in a completely observation only way.

Besides this, you will always be under the care and guidance of expert staff who have spent many years with the Elephants. Their ability to read behavior and understand moods is uncanny and will always ensure that your safety is at the forefront of the experience.

What is the difference between a Walk with Giants Elephant Encounter and an Elephant Back Safari?

Obviously the major difference between the two activities is that one sees you walking alongside these incredible animals, unobtrusively observing them in their natural habitat. The other sees you on the back of these great animals observing the world from an elephants eye view.

Given the global movement and attitude change towards animal interactions, each of these activities offers very different experiences. The Walk with Giants Elephant Encounter has embraced the growing movement to have more of an observation approach to animal interactions whilst the rides continue to bring people and animals into close proximity.

Whilst both have their merits, the choice of which experience to have will be entirely based on the individual’s preference. We are big supporters of having experiences with animals that are as natural as possible.

Two years after its formation, the band relocated to London, England upon signing with Relentless Records after catching the UK label's attention with a set at the 2007 South By Southwest festival. The band's self-titled debut album was released later that year, launching several radio singles and amassing a large following of fans on both sides of the pond. The band's 2011 punk rock-influenced follow-up, Thank You, Happy Birthday, cut a stark contrast to the classic rock, funk, and blues-infused music of their first album, but it was on their third album, Melophobia (2013), that the band found their distinctive signature sound. Cage the Elephant's fourth studio album, Tell Me I'm Pretty (2015), won the award for Best Rock Album at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. They have since released a live album, Unpeeled (2017), and their fifth studio album, Social Cues, is due for release in 2019.
