Norwegian Escape Itineraries

Norwegian escape review, review of norwegian escape.

The 2015-built Norwegian Escape cruise ship is the 1st of all four Breakaway Plus-class NCL vessels - together with the sisterships Norwegian Joy (2017), Norwegian Bliss (2018) and Norwegian Encore (2019). This class of liners are approx 7000 GT tons larger in comparison to the previously biggest vessel of the line, Norwegian Epic . The NCL Escape ship cost USD 920 million to build (October 2012 ship order rates).

The vessel (IMO number 9677076) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311000341) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is a subsidiary company of the shipping corporation Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NCLH). NCL was founded in 1966, headquartered in Miami (Florida USA) and publicly traded (NASDAQ) company listed on NYSE ( NYC ). NCLH's major shareholders are the corporations Apollo Global Management (American), Genting Group (Malaysian) and TPG Capital (American). In 2017, the brand NCL had a worldwide cruise market share 8,7% (passengers) and 8,4% (revenue). NCLH (shipowner) owns the brands NCL , Oceania and RSSC-Regent .

NCL Norwegian Escape cruise ship

The 4300-passenger ship Norwegian Escape received her name in a USA TODAY contest. Guy Harvey was the lucky man chosen in 2014 to paint Escape’s hull art. Norwegian Escape has the innovative features found on Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway , as well as a number of new interactive experiences. The new 4,200-passenger miracle by NCL features an expanded Haven – the line’s concept “ship within a ship”. This space (accessible only by keycard) boasts an outdoor terrace, private restaurant, courtyard area with retractable roof pool, whirlpools, spa treatment rooms, separate sauna, private sundeck. Other differences from the Breakaway-class NCL vessels are more Haven Suites (42 to 55), 26 additional Penthouses, 14 Spa access suites, more Studio cabins (59 to 82).

Decks and Cabins

Norwegian Escape staterooms (2174 total, in 42 grades) include 1717 outside, 407 Inside, 82 Studios (single cabins). Most staterooms are sized 160-170 ft2 (15-16 m2). Balcony cabins are 1168, Oceanviews 114, Inside 407. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 47. The largest accommodations are The Haven Deluxe Owners Suites (900 ft2 / 84 m2, with wraparound terrace sized 190 ft2 / 18 m2).

The 82 Studios (designed for solo travelers) are with virtual views and exclusive access to Studio Lounge. The ship also features many family cabins (connecting staterooms) across most categories.

The boat has 20 decks , of which 16 are passenger-accessible and 12 with cabins.

Norwegian Escape Wiki

NCL Escape ship design changes ("Breakaway" compared to "Breakaway Plus" class) include 1 more passenger deck, increased number of Heaven Suites (from 42 to 55), expanded Haven and Courtyard areas, 26 more Penthouse Suites, more Studio cabins (single occupancy rooms - from 59 to 82). Fun fact is that the "Norwegian Escape" name was selected through a Facebook contest with 10 potential names options. The contest was traditionally called "Norwegians Name Their Ships", and included NCL FB fans votes. The same way company's fans picked the names of Breakaway and Getaway . Escape ship's hull theme is by Guy Harvey (marine wildlife conservationist).

NCL Norwegian Escape cruise ship construction

On September 18, 2015, started vessel's 24-hour long conveyance along Ems River (from the shipyard in Papenburg Germany to Eemshaven Holland ). Liner's christening ceremony was on November 9, 2015, lead by godfather Pitbull (rapper Armando Christian Perez). The naming ceremony was attended by NCLH's CEO Frank Del Rio. The opening act featured acrobatic Parkour performers (helped by hidden trampolines built into the stage). Then Froggy ("Elvis Duran Morning Show”) introduced various performers and VIP guests, among which was Carlos Gimenez (Miami-Dade County's Mayor). Pierside at PortMiami, the rapper Pitbull performed a live concert with some of his best hits, including “Don’t Stop the Party”, “Fireball”, "Give Me Everything”. Followed DJ-led sing-alongs.

Ship's Inaugural Cruise (maiden voyage) started on October 29, 2015. The 11-day Transatlantic crossing was from the UK to Florida ( Southampton to Miami ). On March 1, 2016, NCL announced that Escape's scheduled departure time from homeport Miami will be changed - from 4 pm to 7 pm (3 hours later). This change allows NCL cruise passengers later flights (arrivals in Miami) and applies to all the ship's 7-days Eastern Caribbean itineraries out of Miami scheduled for the period May 7 through December 31, 2016.

NCL Escape has the world's biggest marine scrubber system, consisting of all 5 units produced and installed by Yara Marine Technologies. These units clean the engines' sulfur oxide emissions by 99%. At max cruising speed, the ship's engines consume ~11 tons of diesel fuel per hour. In March 2015, Yara Marine installed its latest technology scrubber system on the Brittany Ferries ship Normandie.

The ship was built with new "scrubbers" (exhaust gas cleaning systems). The new technology reduces the equivalent of approx 1500 tons of the poisonous gas Sulfur Oxide. These in-line scrubbers (5 units) are lightweight and able to operate in a dry mode, as well as in open and closed loops.

In 2018 (starting April), NCL Escape was homeported in NYC New York , with departures from Midtown Manhattan. Currently the largest NYC-homeported cruise ship, Escape was repositioned to NYC from Miami for 7-day roundtrips to Bermuda (through September 2018) and also 7-day and longer itineraries to Florida-Bahamas and other Caribbean destinations.

Kids cruise free: 7 cruise lines offering family deals in 2024

Gwen Pratesi

Cruise vacations give families a chance to reconnect and create shared memories. But cruise fares for three or four people can add up, especially when you consider extras like flights, hotels and excursions. One solution? Share a cabin and save with a "kids cruise free" deal.

Many cruise lines — including family favorites like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line — offer free kids fares and other cruise deals for kids sporadically throughout the year. A few always let kids sail free. You might have the best luck finding family-friendly discounts during wave season , which falls between January and March, when cruise lines have some of the best pricing of the year.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

To make your family trip more affordable, here's a list of family-friendly cruise lines where kids cruise free (or on the cheap) when you time your booking to coincide with a short-term promotion. These incentives change frequently, and the deals can sell out fast, so you might need to be flexible on where you sail and when you go. Always read the fine print before booking to catch any hidden costs or restrictions.

MSC Cruises

ncl escape cruises 2024

MSC Cruises frequently offers its "Kids Sail Free" promotion throughout the year in combination with other limited-time sales. Kids 17 and younger sail free as a third or fourth guest in most cabins. (Yacht Club rooms are excluded.)

Some deals might also include discounted fares, along with cabin upgrades, flexible booking options or freebies (like beverage packages or Wi-Fi), so mom and dad might get a perk or two as well. The "Kids Sail Free" offer is combinable with MSC Cruises' discount program for healthcare workers and active-duty or retired military.

Kids will love MSC Cruises for its kids club partnership with Lego and waterslides enhanced by virtual reality. Its pizza is among some of the best in the industry.

Check throughout the year for kids-cruise-free deals on MSC Cruises' website .

Norwegian Cruise Line

ncl escape cruises 2024

Norwegian Cruise Line offers free kids fares via its "Free at Sea" promotion . The offer gives cruisers complimentary booking perks, including free specialty dining, free beverage packages, shore excursion credit, free Wi-Fi and discounted rates for extra guests in a cabin (including kids).

With the latter offer, you can access free or $99-per-person fares for third and fourth guests, regardless of age. This special pricing applies to select sailings and only when the additional passengers share a cabin with the first and second guests.

NCL often offers discounted cruise fares for the first two guests in combination with the "Free at Sea" promotion. Additional perks to help a family's travel budget might include free airfare for the second guest or reduced deposits, depending on the particular promotion running when you book.

Choose Norwegian's newest cruise ships for wow-factor family activities such as go-kart racing, laser tag and waterslides. The line's casual ambience will appeal to kids who don't like being forced to dress up for dinner.

Holland America Line

Holland America Line offers promotional pricing, including its "Kids Cruise Free" program , throughout the year. The restrictions might change, but the bottom-line savings remain the same.

At press time, the line is running a deal where third and fourth guests under age 18 can sail for free on select Caribbean, Mexico and Panama Canal sailings. (Taxes and fees are additional.) The deal is limited to two children per booking.

Parents and caregivers will want to look for additional promotions that might include free balcony upgrades, onboard credit and reduced deposits. Some throw in a complimentary "Have It All" premium package , which includes specialty dining, a beverage package, complimentary shore excursions (the number depends on the length of the cruise) and Wi-Fi. Otherwise, families can upgrade to the more inclusive package for a discounted price.

Holland America is ideal for multigenerational families traveling together who like to go exploring in port and listen to live music on board.

Royal Caribbean

ncl escape cruises 2024

Royal Caribbean 's "Kids Sail Free" promotion is offered periodically throughout the year. Not every deal is the same, but the line typically offers free cruise fares to children 12 years old or younger who sail as additional guests with two full-fare-paying passengers. This is in addition to occasional offers for onboard credit and a discount on a second guest.

Be sure to read the fine print, as the free cruises for kids come with many restrictions, such as blackout dates over major holidays and school vacation periods and minimum sailing lengths.

Royal Caribbean also occasionally offers a deal where "Kids Sail for Less," which usually includes 25% off the fare for additional passengers in a cabin. This promotion has no age limitation, so it's open to any extra guests sharing accommodations with two full-fare-paying passengers.

Royal Caribbean is a favorite with families who love its big-ship attractions, including ice skating and high-diving shows, onboard splash parks and waterslides, rock climbing walls, miniature golf, laser tag, escape rooms and zip lines. Its enormous kids clubs cater to all ages, from babies to teens, and its private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , is a top destination for families with its multiple beaches and pumped-up water park.

Look for family discounts on Royal Caribbean's deals page .

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises doesn't usually let kids cruise free, but the luxury line does offer reduced fares for kids ages 17 and younger on select sailings during the summer and holiday season. These fares start at $999 per child (or young adult) sailing as the third or fourth guest in a suite and vary in price, depending on the voyage.

At press time, Regent is advertising a "Kids Sail Free" promotion on select itineraries. The offer is a per-person, cruise-only fare that is available to kids ages 17 years or younger at the time of sailing. They must sail as a third guest in a suite accompanied by an adult who is 21 years of age or older.

Regent always includes unlimited complimentary shore excursions, so kids can explore and stay active while cruising in Alaska, Europe, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal or other destinations included in the promotion.

CroisiEurope

ncl escape cruises 2024

River cruise line CroisiEurope's Family Club cruises let kids up to age 16 sail free or at reduced rates of up to 30% off on select sailings.

Because the line's ships have few rooms that can accommodate more than two passengers, the line has waived the single supplement for families on these sailings. That means two parents and one child can book two cabins for the price of one. (Each parent pays for one berth in each cabin, and the child travels free.)

In 2024, you can find kids-cruise-free deals on CroisiEurope river cruises in Portugal, Spain and Italy, as well as the Rhine River. For Family Club sailings to Croatia, children under 16 years of age receive a 30% discount.

This Family Club cruise deal is limited to two children per paying adult. Supplemental fees might be added for upgraded rooms. On these sailings, optional excursions are geared toward kids, and a menu for younger palates is available in onboard dining venues.

On all other sailings, the river cruise line offers a 20% discount for kids younger than 10 years of age. Children under 2 always sail free.

Star Clippers

If you're planning a multigenerational family getaway, consider booking a voyage on one of Star Clipper's tall ships. Currently, kids between 3 and 17 can sail free with one or two adults in the same cabin on select three- to nine-night 2024 and 2025 sailings in the Caribbean, Central America and the Mediterranean. (For this promotion, you must book by April 30, 2024.)

If two children are traveling with two adults (in specific room categories), the line accommodates the family in two individual cabins. What's more, grandparents ages 65 and older can join in the fun and receive a 10% discount on cruise fares.

Kids can imagine themselves as sailors or pirates with onboard activities such as knot tying and climbing the ship's mast. Older kids especially will enjoy water sports right from the ship.

Cepsa starts supplying biofuels to Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings at Barcelona port

The energy company has the capacity to supply these sustainable fuels to the cruise industry on a regular basis in the spanish ports in which it operates.

Spanish energy firm Cepsa has made its first direct supply of second-generation biofuels to the cruise industry at the Port of Barcelona. In addition, the company, which is the leading supplier of energy for maritime transport in Spain, has confirmed new supplies for the coming months, with biofuels available on a regular basis in the ports of Barcelona and Algeciras.

The fuel supplied in Barcelona contains a 24% sustainable component, which will avoid the emission of approximately 3000 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to planting 200,000 trees. This biofuel has been produced from used cooking oils, which promotes the circular economy.

Operated by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), the 325-metre-long Norwegian Escape, received its first supply at the end of July and is scheduled to be supplied with biofuel throughout the current European Union cruise season. Cepsa also supplied biofuel to two other vessels operated by NCLH, the 223-metre Seven Seas Voyager and the 239-metre Oceania Riviera, in early August.

Second generation biofuels

Cepsa has the capacity to supply these sustainable fuels to the cruise industry on a regular basis in the rest of the Spanish ports in which it operates. Samir Fernandez, director of Marine Fuel Solutions at Cepsa, said: "We are delighted that second generation biofuels are now being harnessed by the cruise sector in its journey towards decarbonisation. Marine fuels can be used on ships without the need to modify their engines, and have a high potential to reduce CO2 emissions compared to conventional fossil fuels, achieving a reduction of up to 90% over their lifecycle, making them an ideal immediate solution."

This development comes at a time when the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) is focusing its attention on ensuring that the industry has sufficient access to low-carbon fuels to achieve net zero carbon cruising by 2050. Now that the sector has rebounded significantly after Covid-19, it is essential to facilitate rapid and meaningful decarbonisation.

The International Energy Agency notes that, historically, petroleum-based fuels have met more than 99% of the total energy demand of international shipping. To reach net zero, the sector will need to increase the use of alternative fuels, including biofuels, hydrogen and green ammonia, and renewable electricity.

International objectives

The use of biofuels allows shipping companies to meet the objectives set out by the European Union and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). In particular, the European Commission's "Fit for 55" package includes "FuelEU Maritime", a legislative initiative that aims to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions intensity of shipping by 2% by 2025, 6% by 2030 and 80% by 2050, compared to 2020 levels, through the use of sustainable fuels.

At the same time, the IMO has updated its strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, setting ambitious targets that will progressively increase from 20% in 2030 to achieve net zero emissions in 2050, compared to 2008 levels.

Cepsa has a diverse portfolio of solutions to facilitate the decarbonisation of maritime transport. Apart from biofuels, it includes products such as liquefied natural gas (LNG). In addition, Cepsa plans to supply synthetic marine fuels in the future, such as green ammonia or methanol, which will be produced in the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley, one of the largest green hydrogen projects in Europe.

Barcelona is the cultural heartland of Spain, yet its first language is Catalan, the native tongue of the proudly independent Catalonia region. Stroll down the shady, tree-lined Ramblas between street musicians and elegant bistros. Then perhaps visit the venerable Gothic cathedral, Picasso Museum or enjoy the architectural genius of Antonio Gaudi's Church of the Holy Family.

Cannes has an international reputation for glamour - pictures and movie clips of its croisette, its film stars and its grand hotels instantly conjure up an image of style and sophistication. Cannes is much changed from its beginnings as a resort when an English traveller, Lord Brougham, was quarantined there in 1834. Nowadays, the city hosts conventions and festivals all year round - and there's plenty to attract the guests and delegates.

From Livorno, your path leads through the rolling green hills of Tuscany to Florence, the flower of the Renaissance. The creative explosion happened right here, with masterworks by Michelangelo, Brunelleschi and Botticelli now landmarks of daily life. Ufizzi, Academmia, il Duomo: the art treasures of a golden age are commonplace to blessed Florentines. Livorno also serves as the gateway to Pisa, home of the famous leaning tower.

Civitavecchia is just moments from Rome, Italy's Eternal City. One of the most geographically perfect ports in the world, Civitavecchia boasts a number of compelling area attractions. Stroll through the streets of the medieval town of Tarquinia. View the resplendent Madonnina at the Resort of Pantano.

One of the most spectacular bays in the world lies in the shadow of Mt. Vesuvius. Visit the San Carlo Opera House and the cathedral of San Janarious, or tour the ancient ruins in the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

The setting for Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, Messina has much to offer in the way of history. Its dramatic, boulder-filled harbor has challenged navigators since the days of Ulysses. Try to visit the city's Bell Tower at the stroke of noon--the hour when one of the world's largest and most fanciful mechanical clocks springs into action. Messina's museum is also noteworthy for its Renaissance masterworks.

Located in the middle of the Mediterranean, Malta's coastline features many harbors, bays, sandy beaches and rocky coves. After a leisurely stroll through the Barracca Gardens you'll be awarded with a spectacular view of the harbor of Valetta.

As Sardinia's capital, Cagliari is both a thriving modern city and a fine example of the varied history of this Italian island. Explore the Roman amphitheater, Spanish townhouses, and Pisan watchtowers. Antiquities from the native Nuraghi culture and from the Phoenician era onward are well-displayed in the National Archaeological Museum.

The major island in the chain known as the Balearics, Mallorca is Spain's sunny outpost in the Mediterranean. The town of Palma boasts a shady plaza near the Gothic Cathedral. Visit the Roman ruins and the Drach Caves nearby, or journey to the enchanting village of Valledemosa. Leave time to shop for lovely majolica faux pearls and hand-made lace.
