What is the best time to visit Singapore, Malaysia & Thailand?

The best time to visit Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand is during the dry season, (from October to April) when the weather is not too hot & it doesn't rain too much. However, please note that this time is the high season for you may experience crowds during the trip. Travelling in the low season will give you a better price with less touristy experience.

Can we change the order of the destinations? Is it possible to start the tour in Thailand & finish it in Singapore?

Complete Guide: Singapore – Malaysia land travel from 1 April

Planning to cross the causeway? Here's all you need to know about the Singapore-Malaysia land border reopening, from 1 April 2022.

Singapore and Malaysia will reopen their land border from 1 April 2022, allowing fully vaccinated travellers to cross with no testing, quarantine or travel insurance requirement. This covers all modes of travel , including private cars, motorcycles and walking. 

Prior to the pandemic, more than 415,000 people crossed the Woodlands Causeway and Tuas Second Link daily, with short trips making up the bulk of movements. 

If you’re planning to join that number, here’s all you need to know about crossing the land border. For those planning to travel by air , refer to the article below instead.

Land travel to Malaysia

Fully vaccinated.

All travellers to Malaysia must be fully vaccinated , as defined by the following table:

For example, someone with 2 doses of Pfizer would be considered fully vaccinated if he/she is aged 18-59 years old, but partially vaccinated if he/she is 60 years or older.

Children aged 17 and below are considered to meet the vaccination requirement, regardless of actual vaccination status. 

MySejahtera app

Travellers to Malaysia must:

• download the MySejahtera app ( Android | iOS )
• create an account (when registering, enter the Malaysia  address you’ll be staying at)
• complete the digital pre-departure form via the “Traveller” icon on MySejahtera
• verify their COVID-19 vaccination certificate.  

Most of the steps are pretty self-explanatory, except perhaps the last one. Anyone who was vaccinated outside of Malaysia needs to upload and verify their digital vaccination certificate before departure.

This can be done via the MySafeTravel portal , and involves uploading the QR code of your vaccination certificate.

Singapore travellers are only required to upload a single QR code; the instructions say to choose the last EUDCC one on your cert (i.e. Dose 2 for double dosed travellers, Dose 3 for triple dosed travellers). In my case, my “offline QR verification (EU DCC-compatible)” code wasn’t accepted, so in the end I used the one labelled “online QR verification” and it went through just fine.

Take note that every comma, every hyphen must be included! If the name on your vaccination certificate is:

be sure to enter it exactly that way on MySafeTravel, or verification will fail. 

Once approved, it takes about two days for your MySejahtera app to be updated. 

Those who were vaccinated in other countries can refer to this guide for the steps required. 

Road Charge

Singapore-registered cars must pay a Road Charge of RM20 (~S$6.45) on entry, but this will be waived until 7 April 2022. From 8 April 2022 onwards, the Road Charge is payable.

This concession is meant to give Singaporeans the opportunity to top up their Touch ‘n Go cards, which may have become inactive during the two years the land border was closed. 

Vehicle Entry Permit

The much-discussed Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) is theoretically required for all non-Malaysian registered vehicles entering Malaysia, but enforcement has been delayed until further notice. The Malaysian government is urging motorists with Singapore-registered vehicles to register ASAP via this portal.

Registered vehicles will receive an RFID tag (cost: RM10 , excluding delivery and service charges), tied to an Touch ‘n Go e-wallet. This allows them to pay Road Charges seamlessly.

VEP registration is valid for five years starting from the day the VEP RFID tag is activated. 

How is this different from VTL travel?

It’s a much simpler process, now that all modes of transport are valid, the travel insurance requirement has been scrapped, and there’s no more pre-departure or on-arrival testing.

Land travel to Singapore

Travellers are considered fully vaccinated if they meet the following conditions at least 2 weeks before arrival in Singapore:

• Received the full regimen of WHO EUL Vaccines (see below) and met the minimum dose interval period; or
• Travellers who contracted COVID-19 before being vaccinated must have received at least one dose of any WHO EUL Vaccines (below) at least 28 days from their first diagnosis  of a COVID-19 infection. Travellers must produce acceptable proof of their first positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

Children aged 12 and under in the current calendar year (i.e. those born in 2010 and later, for arrivals in 2022) are treated as fully vaccinated regardless of their actual status. 

A booster dose is currently not required to be considered fully vaccinated.

Travellers vaccinated in Malaysia may upload their digital certificate for COVID-19 vaccination on the MySejahtera app during the SG Arrival Card submission (see below). 

TraceTogether

All travellers to Singapore must download and register for TraceTogether ( Android | iOS ). This is required for checking into venues and displaying your vaccination status, which is necessary to access shopping malls, restaurants and other vaccinated-only venues. 

Travellers who were vaccinated outside Singapore will be granted  temporary vaccinated status lasting about 30 days if they successfully uploaded their digital vaccination certificates as part of their SG Arrival Card (see below) or manually presented their vaccination certificates and the manual immigration counters.

Do note that if you’ve taken 2x Sinovac/Sinopharm doses outside of Singapore, you will still be granted temporary vaccinated status for 30 days, notwithstanding the domestic requirement for vaccination recognition is 3x doses. 

SG Arrival Card

All travellers to Singapore (regardless of nationality) must complete an SG Arrival Card within three days before arrival in Singapore. 

The SG Arrival Card has been simplified, and now features only three sections: 

• Personal particulars
• Submission of vaccination proof (not required for those vaccinated in Singapore)
• Health declaration

Completing the SG Arrival Card is free of charge , if you do it via the official website. Beware of lookalikes out there which charge a fee! 

Drivers of foreign-registered vehicles require a valid Autopass card and LTA’s approval email to enter into Singapore, as well as valid road tax and a certificate of insurance for the vehicle. 

Applications can be made via the OneMotoring website. 

Autopass cards can be collected at LTA’s Johor Bahru Service Centre before entering Singapore, and serve as an electronic VEP to record entry, and pay all tolls. Each Autopass card  is tied to a single vehicle , and costs S$10 (with a pre-loaded value of S$4 and a non-refundable cost of S$6). 

VEPs have a validity period of 14 days , starting from the date of entry into Singapore. To extend the stay of the vehicle in Singapore, renewal is required. 

Entry Tolls

The following toll fees are charged for entering and exiting Singapore, and apply to both Singapore and overseas registered vehicles. 

If you’ve travelled to Singapore under the VTL-Land previously, here’s the key differences of the new arrangement.

Singapore and Malaysia will be reopening their land border from 1 April 2022, with no testing, quarantine or travel insurance required. Travellers may cross the causeway whichever way they wish- even walking!

This should make mattress runs much easier, if nothing else.

• For Genting Highlands, guests are permitted to carry only one luggage bag + one hand or Cabin Bag. In case if guest is carrying more than one bag and the size of bag is not as per the specified limit then guest will have to pay RM20 (Malaysian Ringgit) per bag per way directly at counter. Standard Check-in and check-out time of International hotels is usually 1500hrs and 1200hrs respectively.

SINGAPORE: From Apr 1, fully vaccinated travellers will be able to cross the land borders between Singapore and Malaysia in their own vehicles again and without the need for quarantine or COVID-19 tests. 

Authorities are expecting a surge in travellers, and have urged those with no urgent need to travel to hold off for the time being. 

Here are five things to know if you intend to make the trip. 

HOW CAN I CROSS THE LAND BORDERS?

From Apr 1, fully vaccinated travellers will be allowed to cross the land border into Singapore and Malaysia by private transport. 

For the first time in two years, they will be able to drive their cars or ride their motorcycles across the Causeway and Second Link. 

Travellers can also choose to use designated vaccinated travel bus services while Singapore and Malaysia work to restore cross-border public bus services. 

Malaysian Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said that there will be no quota for all modes of travel and that the land checkpoints will operate 24 hours daily .

DO I NEED TO TAKE ANY COVID-19 TESTS? 

No. All fully vaccinated travellers, and non-fully vaccinated children aged 12 and below, will no longer be subject to any COVID-19 test requirement. 

Travellers can use the Vaccination Check Portal on the SafeTravel website to submit their digital vaccination certificates in advance, said Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry.

WHAT TRAVEL DOCUMENTS DO I NEED? 

In addition to your passport, those entering Singapore in foreign-registered vehicles must have a valid Autopass card and Land Transport Authority's (LTA) approval email.

The Autopass Card serves as an electronic Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) for foreign cars and motorcycles and is used to record the vehicle’s entry into Singapore and to pay all entry and exit fees when the vehicle is driven out of Singapore.

VEPs have validity period of 14 days.

VEPs can only be applied for online, on the LTA's OneMotoring website . Travellers should plan their trips at least two weeks ahead to allow enough time for the VEP application and approval process.  

Those with existing valid VEPs can begin to cross the borders into Singapore from 11.59pm on Mar 31. 

Drivers or riders from Malaysia who do not present a valid Autopass card together with LTA's VEP approval email will not be allowed to enter Singapore.

Additionally, all travellers, including Singapore citizens, permanent residents and long-term pass holders, must complete their SG Arrival Card within three days before arriving at the checkpoints.

IS MY VTL BUS TICKET STILL VALID? 

Yes. Designated vaccinated travel bus services will continue to operate for now, as cross-border public bus services are not yet up and running. 

Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry said authorities in both countries are working to progressively restore such public bus services. 

WHAT ABOUT AIR TRAVEL? 

Singapore also announced on Thursday it will reopen its borders to all fully vaccinated travellers from Apr 1 , removing all existing vaccinated travel lanes (VTL) and unilateral opening arrangements.

Under the framework, all fully vaccinated travellers, as well as children aged 12 and below, will be able to enter Singapore with just a pre-departure COVID-19 test from 11.59pm on Mar 31.

They will also no longer need to apply for entry approvals or take designated VTL transport to enter Singapore quarantine-free.   In addition, there will be no more quotas on the number of daily arrivals.

While they will continue to be subjected to a pre-departure test within two days before departure for Singapore, they will not be required to serve a stay-home notice or undergo an unsupervised antigen rapid test (ART) after arriving in Singapore.

Prior to Singapore's announcement, Malaysia had also announced that it would reopen its borders fully on Apr 1.

Foreigners entering Malaysia with valid travel documents will not need to undergo quarantine, so long as they are fully vaccinated. 

The requirement for foreigners to apply to enter Malaysia using the MyTravelPass application will also be lifted. 

Instead, they only need to download and activate the MySejahtera contact tracing app and fill up a pre-departure form in the app.

Travellers entering Malaysia from Singapore by air will need to take a COVID-19 ART two days before departure, instead of the more costly reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test as previously stipulated for travellers entering via the vaccinated travel lane (VTL) scheme.

Thousands have crossed the land borders between Singapore and Malaysia since the reopening on Friday (April 1). ST looks at the situation on both sides of the border.

Over 33,000 people cross Causeway, Second Link since midnight reopening

About 33,700 travellers have crossed the land borders between Singapore and Malaysia as at 5pm on Friday (April 1) since the borders fully reopened at midnight.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said on Friday afternoon that 27,600 people have departed Singapore via the Causeway and the Second Link.

Of these travellers, 9,400 of them departed on foot or buses, 9,700 in cars and the remaining 8,500 on motorcycles.

But because of the Covid-19 pandemic and its restrictions on travel, Singaporean Jeremy Chua has been unable to do so for two years.

With the full opening of land borders between Singapore and Malaysia on Friday (April 1), Mr Chua seized the opportunity for quarantine- and testing-free travel and drove over to JB.

Traffic slows down at Woodlands, Tuas checkpoints after midnight rush

Thousands have crossed the land borders between Singapore and Malaysia since these reopened close to midnight on Friday (April 1).

Travellers were also able to take a new shuttle bus service between the checkpoints in Woodlands and Johor Baru run by Malaysian bus operator Causeway Link.

The first bus left at 6am from Malaysia and 6.30am from Woodlands. The last bus from Johor Baru is at 10pm and the last bus from Woodlands will leave at 10.30pm.

Singaporeans, Malaysians rejoice as land borders finally fully reopen

Minutes before the land borders were set to reopen at 11.59pm on Thursday (March 31), the waiting crowd began to move. At midnight, they streamed by foot, car and motorbike across the checkpoints in Woodlands and Tuas, many heading towards home or meeting family members who were waiting on the other side to pick them up.

Cars tooted their horns as they drove into the complex, while people on foot clapped and cheered before the jubilant mood quickly settled into one of business as usual of clearing immigration checks.

The border had been closed since March 17, 2020. By 10.50pm, more than 200 people, mainly Malaysian, were waiting patiently at Woodlands. At Tuas, some 500 motorbike riders waited eagerly as time went by, some revving their machines in anticipation.

These were the preparations I had to make before embarking on my first trip to Johor Baru on Friday (April 1).

No motorbike jam from Malaysia to Singapore on first morning of border reopening

The pre-pandemic sight of Malaysian workers rushing to cross the Malaysia-Singapore land borders was absent on Friday morning (April 1), the first day when border travel between both countries resumed after more than two years of closure.

Motorbike lanes at the Malaysian side of the border remained largely empty from 5am to 7am. Thousands of workers usually queue up early in the morning to make the trip across the Causeway to work in Singapore.

Shuttle buses ferrying passengers between the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex in Johor and the Singapore checkpoint also ran with a small number of passengers.

Johor businesses, workers set for revival as Singapore-Malaysia border reopens

Businesses and workers in Johor are all geared up for an economic revival from the reopening of land crossings between Malaysia and Singapore on Friday (April 1), after two years of border closures dimmed prospects in the southern state.

Johor was one of Malaysia's worst-affected states when borders shut due to the Covid-19 pandemic, depriving it of consumer spending from Singaporean holidaymakers as well as local workers earning in the Republic.

With the return of day trippers and the daily commute across the Causeway - once one of the world's busiest border crossings - local traders hope for some semblance of pre-pandemic normalcy.

More automated lanes, vehicle counters at checkpoints ahead of border reopening: ICA

The number of automated lanes in the bus halls at Woodlands Checkpoint has been increased ahead of Singapore reopening its land border with Malaysia on Friday (April 1), said the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

To beef up capacity, ICA has also configured bus and car counters at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints to automate immigration clearance for lone drivers, it said in a statement on Thursday evening (March 31).

ICA and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) have also been maintaining, enhancing and testing their systems, it said, adding that contingency plans have been put in place to cope with unforeseen circumstances.

The Malaysian government on Wednesday (March 30) announced that all vehicles entering the country via the Johor-Singapore land borders will be exempted from toll payments for a week, starting from April 1.

In addition, travel insurance will no longer be required for fully vaccinated short-term visitors who enter Singapore or Malaysia via the land borders from April 1, according to the authorities in both countries.

The toll charge waiver is on top of the one-week road charge exemption announced earlier.

Covid restrictions have been relaxed, borders have been reopened, and international travelling has been made possible yet again.

For two years, the border between Malaysia and Singapore has been closed due to the rising cases of Covid-19, but as of 1st of April 2022, Malaysians can now travel to Singapore and Singaporeans too are now free to cross the bridge and visit Malaysia—be it to visit your close relatives and say hi to your friends, or even for leisure!

So, what exactly do you need to know before packing your bags and setting off on your trip from Singapore to Malaysia?

Flights might only take you less than an hour to reach Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) from Changi Airport, but of course, the price per passenger might not be to your liking. So, how do you get there without leaving a huge hole in your wallet?

Preparations for the Trip

Valid passport.

Of course, first things first—make sure your passport is not expired! Keep in mind that your passport must be valid for more than six months in order to enter Malaysia.

You might not notice that your passport is nearing the expiry date especially when you have not been travelling abroad for quite some time, so it’s best to check the date and renew it if needed!

Vaccination

Make sure you’re fully vaccinated before travelling to Malaysia. While fully vaccinated visitors are no longer required to self-quarantine upon reaching Malaysia.

Mysejahtera App

At this point of time, you are still required to install the Mysejahtera app on your mobile. Some places still need to are still required to check the risk status of visitors through the app.  You need to upload your vaccination certificate to your Mysejahtera App so that your vaccination status will show “Fully Vaccinated”.

The app is available on both Apple and Android app stores, so be sure to download it to your smartphones beforehand.

Touch n’ Go Card (TNG)

For those who choose to drive to Malaysia, it is a must for you to keep a Touch n’ Go card with you at all times.

You’ll have to go through several highway tolls and all of them only accept cashless payments, so be sure to have sufficient balance topped up in the TNG card.

Other than being used for tolls, the TNG card can also be used for the MRT, LRT, Monorails, KTM, bus rides as well as parking fees.

To ease your trip, you can go ahead and purchase the new EZ-Link x Touch n’ Go Motoring card , a dual-currency smart card which can be used in both Singapore and Malaysia.

You can easily get it from selected 7-11 outlets throughout Singapore as well as EZ-Link official Shopee store.

T op-ups can be made in various shops and petrol stations scattered throughout Malaysia too, but it is highly recommended that you download the Touch n’ Go e-wallet app in your smartphones.

Through this app, you can make payments at various stores that accept e-wallet payments and if you’ve purchased Enhanced Touch n’ Go card, you can even top-up your balance online!

Cheapest Way to Travel from Singapore to Malaysia

Now that you have all those essentials listed above settled, it’s time to decide which transportation method you prefer to travel to Malaysia.

Other than flying, there are three other options to choose from. While taking flights could indeed save a lot of your travelling time, these three options listed below can definitely save your bank accounts.

Travel by Bus - Suitable for those travelling with friends

The cheapest option to Malaysia is by none other than bus rides. However, this option is not recommended for those who are travelling with infants and elderly as it requires a lot of walking around and sometimes, long queues.

It is also not advisable to pack your things in a bulky and huge luggage, so backpacks are the best choices here.

First and foremost, you must reach Woodlands Train Checkpoint before you could even get on any of the Cross Border Shuttles. To do so, you can start your journey at Woodland MRT. 

Once you’ve arrived, try to look for sign boards that can lead you to the Woodlands Bus Interchange. Once you’ve gone down the staircase, you’ll straight away notice several buses waiting for you. But which one do you need to take?

You can either take Bus 856 (Berth 11) which only has six stops before you could reach the checkpoint or Bus 903 (Berth 4) and get off after ten stops.

You can also opt for Bus 903, 911T, 912, and 912 B , however, getting to the checkpoint via these buses is rather confusing. So, be sure to ask the bus driver first before you set your bags!

You can, of course, walk to the checkpoint although you might be drenched in sweat upon your arrival. If you’re not in the mood to wait for the buses, feel free to take the taxi or Grab.

Now that you’ve arrived at Woodlands Train Checkpoint after a good 10-15 minute bus ride, go ahead and make your way to the Woodland CIQ (Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex).

Once you’ve gotten through the Singapore immigration checkpoint, all you have to do is head down the escalator and take the Cross Border Shuttle Bus which will take you straight to Johor CIQ.

With less than $2, you can either choose to embark on the SBS Transit Bus (160, 170, 170X, and SMRT 950) or take the Causeway Link buses if you’re a Causeway Link ticket holder.

Upon reaching JB CIQ, proceed through the immigration process and before you know it, you’re free to roam around and take an exciting trip around Johor Bahru !

Travel by Train - Suitable for everyone including those with small children and elderly people.

If you feel taking bus too hassle or not in the mood for driving, and prefer to sit back and relax, then you can opt to travel to Malaysia via train rides—plus, the price for the train tickets never change, so don’t worry about any extra surcharges imposed especially during peak seasons.

To begin your trip, simply make your way to the Woodlands station. After going through the customs clearance, those who had purchased the train tickets online can straight away board the train while those who have yet to buy the tickets can do so at their official ticket counters for only $5.

Once you have the tickets in your hands, get on the train and enjoy the 5-minute journey from Singapore to Johor Bahru.

However, the train can only take you to JB Sentral, so you might have to figure out your own transportations should you wish to travel to the other parts of Malaysia. You can always rent a car or make use of the KTM train which connects many cities and towns in Malaysia.

Take the train from JB Sentral up until Gemas which is where you can find two KTM lines that lead you to different parts of Malaysia: The main KTM railway line goes all the way up to Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Penang while the Jungle Railway goes to the eastern parts of Malaysia such as Kelantan.

Travel by Car - Suitable for those travelling with infants and elderly

If you’re planning on driving to Malaysia, you first need to ensure that your vehicle insurance policy covers your time in Malaysia. Then, you’ll have to register for the mandatory Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) if you haven’t done so already.

For first timers, you can register your vehicle details online here .

Once you’ve received a confirmation email, you’ll be contacted via another email to confirm your address as the VEP RFID tag will be posted straight to your doorstep. Now that you’ve gotten the tag, you’re free to start your journey to Malaysia!

*The tag installed also comes with an e-wallet which you can use to pay at the tolls around Malaysia.

While parking spaces in shopping malls can be paid with TNG and debit cards, there are also others that require parking coupons.

You can purchase parking coupons from various stores located nearby the parking spaces (most of the time, they’ll put up a sign if they’re selling any) or if you prefer to avoid any unnecessary hassles, go ahead and download the parking apps in your phone.

However, the apps might differ according to the states that you’re in, so be sure to use the right one.

Johor Bahru

Also known as Malaysia’s southern jewel, Johor Bahru or JB is a popular tourist destination that could cater to almost everyone—be it those travelling with a group of friends or those visiting with family members and small children.

Get a ticket to Adventure Waterpark Desaru Coast, a unique waterpark famous for its backdrop of traditional kampung and at least 13 thrilling rides and slides to keep you entertained all day long.

What’s even better is that it is only a matter of time until the opening of a brand new jetty that directly connects Singapore and Desaru, so no more time consuming travelling time!

Whether you’re a history buff or simply someone who loves sightseeing, then Melaka should definitely get included in your “must-visit” list. Filled with dozens of historical buildings, you can get a chance to learn a thing or two about Malaysia’s history and Melaka’s origin.  

The best way to explore this colonial town is of course, by foot as many of its attractions are located pretty near to each other.

Start your tour by visiting a couple of museums, take a closer look at the A Famosa fort along with the 16th century Church of Saint Paul on top of the breezy hill overlooking the town, try out some pandan pancakes with sweet gula melaka at a few of the Instagrammable cafes, and witness the lively nightlife at Jonker Street

Unique temples, themed water parks, historic castles, heritage museums, cave explorations, and countless local cuisines —these are the things that could describe the wonders of Ipoh.

What’s best about the theme park is that it is well surrounded by hills and mother nature—which makes you feel as if you’re really in the middle of a long lost world deep in the jungle!

For those who prefer something more challenging, head to Gua Tempurung and explore the old cave. Be prepared to crawl through narrow openings, slide down the steep and slippery surfaces, and encounter some exotic insects calling the cave their home.

History lovers could pay Kelly’s Castle a visit while foodies could spend hours jumping from one eatery to another trying out mouth-watering egg tarts, dim sums, curry mee, tau fu fah, salted chicken, and many more.

Concubine Lane is definitely a must visit and if you can’t decide which of those famous food in Ipoh that you should not miss, here are some of our suggestions.

Nicknamed the Pearl of the Orient and Malaysia’s food paradise , Penang should get included in your itinerary especially if you have an undying love for delicious food and cuisines.

From nasi kandar to pasembur, rojak, cendol, and roti canai served with a generous amount of gravy, a sunny side up, and a juicy chicken thigh—you can have them all.

It is not difficult to find restaurants and stalls selling all those delicacies above, but there are also some that you should not miss: Penang Road Teochew Cendol, the town’s most famous cendol stall that has been operating since the ‘30s as well as Hameed Pata Mee Sotong in Esplanade Park Food Court.

One of the most peculiar museums that you find in Penang includes the Ghost Museum which showcases eerie and horrifying depictions of ghosts and spirits originating from both Malaysia and Indonesia.

As for those who crave for amazing sunset views, don’t forget to stop by Batu Ferringhi!

Cameron and Genting Highlands

None can ever say no to spending some quality time on top of a breezy hill, sipping a hot cup of strawberry tea and munching on some tasty pastry while overlooking an entire tea plantation.

Cameron Highlands can offer you just that! Founded in the 19th century, Cameron Highlands is now filled with a great number of points of interest that could keep you entertained.

Other than sitting around in cafes, you can visit one of its many strawberry farms, get a taste of the unique nasi lemak strawberry, take a closer look at a colourful rose farm, tour around the villages of orang asli , and climb up Mount Brinchang if you’re feeling adventurous.

Of course, if you’ve visited Cameron Highlands, you must also spend some time in Genting Highlands.

In contrast to Cameron highlands which is a spot surrounded by beautiful mother nature, Genting Highlands focuses more on theme parks and thrilling fun! The main highlight is of course, the recently opened Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park.

Tioman and Perhentian Islands

In the mood for a spectacular view of the beach combined with the crystal clear sea water? If so, then pack your bags and make your way to either Tioman or Perhentian Islands.

Tioman Islands is located in Pahang while Perhentian can be found in Terengganu, however, both can offer you a pleasant vacation experience.

You can spend the entire day lying on the soft sand beaches and go snorkelling to see all the unique and colourful marine life in their natural habitat.

For those staying in Johor, you can take a ferry from Mersing to reach Tioman Island. As for the Perhentian Islands, since it is located on the eastern coast of Malaysia, you’ll first have to go through several hours of journey to Kuala Besut jetty and take the speedboat to the islands.

You’ll know that you’re nearing the pristine islands when the deep dark ocean water turns clear to the point where you can easily spot the corals and small marine animals swimming around—if you’re lucky, you might even take a glimpse of stingrays dashing through underwater!

Last but not least, what’s a trip to Malaysia without setting foot on its capital city, Kuala Lumpur?

If splurging your paychecks at high-end stores, sipping coffees at Instagrammable cafes , eating at some of the best fine dining restaurants, and visiting the Petronas Twin Towers are your definition of a perfect trip, then the busy city of Kuala Lumpur is the right destination for you.  

Do keep in mind, however, that the city is also known for its traffic jams especially during peak hours, but don’t worry too much as KL has a wide option of public transport—you can take the MRT, LRT, and Monorail lines to reach all sorts of main attractions such as the Central Market which is popular for Malaysian arts and crafts. 

Pavilion, the top shopping complex filled with an array of branded stores, the KL Tower which can offer you a great view of the entire city, and many more.

Getting to Malaysia from Singapore is indeed hassle-free. All you need to do is plan your itinerary beforehand and choose which one of the transportation options that you prefer.

Public Health Advisory

Travellers should refer to the ICA website for the latest information on travelling to/from or transiting through Singapore. Travellers seeking to enter Singapore should comply with prevailing Public Health (including COVID-19) as well as General Entry Requirements listed on the Singapore immigration website ( http://www.ica.gov.sg/enter-transit-depart/entering-singapore ) to ensure a smooth journey.

For information on health-related entry requirements for Malaysia, travellers may refer to Malaysia’s MySafeTravel website ( https://mysafetravel.gov.my ) for more details. Travellers can stay updated on the COVID-19 situation in Malaysia by checking the Malaysian Ministry of Health’s website ( http://covid-19.moh.gov.my ).

Entry and Exit

Visa Requirements

Singaporeans do not require a visa to enter Malaysia for up to 30 days. However, for onward travel from Malaysia to a third country, Singaporeans may be required to hold a valid visa. It is thus advisable to obtain a visa for onward travel, if necessary, before the start of your journey. Applying for a visa en-route to your destination in Malaysia or at the country you intend to visit may be difficult.

Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC)

The Immigration Department of Malaysia requires foreign nationals to complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) prior to their arrival in Malaysia. However, Singapore Passport holders are exempt from this requirement at all entry points. Singaporeans who intend to enrol their fingerprints for access to automated immigration clearance via the e-gates on subsequent entry should submit the MDAC three days prior to their arrival in Malaysia.

Malaysia Automated Clearance System (MACS)

Singaporeans who have applied for use of the Malaysia Automated Clearance System (MACS) are reminded that the facility is only available at land checkpoints at Johor (Bangunan Sultan Iskandar and Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar). MACS is meant to facilitate faster immigration clearance for exit from/entry into Johor and cannot be used as a transit facility for onward flights out of Malaysia.

General Immigration Matters

• Singapore passports must be valid for more than 6 months at the time of entry.
• When you enter or depart Malaysia, check that your passport is stamped before leaving the immigration booth.
• Do not pass the immigration booths that are unattended. You should not enter or leave Malaysia without having your travel documents processed by a Malaysian immigration officer and ensuring that your passport is stamped correctly.
• If you are entering Malaysia for internship or employment purpose, please ensure that the proper approval is obtained from the Malaysian immigration authorities prior to your arrival. Please approach the Malaysian High Commission in Singapore ( https://www.kln.gov.my/web/sgp_singapore/home ), Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) ( https://www.imi.gov.my ), and JIM’s Expatriate Services Division ( https://esd.imi.gov.my/portal ) for information or clarification on the relevant passes and entry requirements.
• Please ensure your passport is in good condition. Passports with signs of damage (i.e. tear, water damage) may not be accepted for entry into Malaysia.

Loss of Passport

• If your Singapore passport is lost or stolen when you are in Malaysia, make a police report immediately at the nearest local police station.
• Report the loss  online via ICA e-Services immediately, if you have a valid Singpass account.
• After reporting the loss, ICA e-Services will prompt you to apply and pay for a temporary travel document, known as a Document of Identity (DOI).
• Once the online application is approved and ready for collection, the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur or Consulate-General in Johor Bahru, depending on your selection, will contact you for collection.
• If you do  not  have a valid Singpass account, you should bring the police report and two passport-sized photographs to the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur or Consulate-General in Johor Bahru to apply, pay, and obtain the DOI.
• The DOI, which is chargeable, is only valid for one-way travel back to Singapore.
• As there are some administrative procedures involved in issuing a DOI, our offices may not be able to issue the document immediately and you may have to extend your stay in Malaysia.
• For exiting Malaysia with a DOI, you may be required to apply for a special pass from the Malaysian Immigration Headquarters nearest to your point of departure.
• You can apply for a new passport after you have returned to Singapore.

Customs Requirements

• For a comprehensive list of dutiable and duty-free goods, as well as customs requirements, please refer to  https://www.customs.gov.my/en/tp/Pages/tp_ppel.aspx   for more information.
• All visitors to Malaysia are required to declare dutiable goods at the customs. There are currency exchange control restrictions on bringing large amounts of Malaysian ringgit or foreign currencies into or out of the country. Please refer to  https://www.customs.gov.my/en/tp/Pages/tp_cec.aspx  for more information. 

Consular Assistance

Singaporeans who require consular assistance may contact the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur or the Consulate-General in Johor Bahru using the contact details provided on the sidebar. Singaporeans in Malaysia are strongly encouraged to e-register with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at  https://eregister.mfa.gov.sg/  so that they can be contacted, should the need arise.

Safety and Security

Take general precautions to ensure your personal security in Malaysia such as:

• Carry your personal belongings on the side away from the street.
• Do not carry too much cash or display expensive jewellery or accessories (such as watches or bags) on your person.
• Do not leave your belongings unattended when in crowded public places.
• Ensure that you have your travel documents (i.e. passport) on your person at all times.
• Do not leave important documents (like passport) or valuables in plain sight in your car. All loose electronic items, bags or belongings should be stowed away, out of sight.
• Avoid isolated, unfamiliar places and places with a high known incidence of crime especially at night and if alone. Opt for well-lit and well-travelled areas which will be safer and reduce the risk of being a victim of crime.
• There have been occasional reports of alleged scams, robbery and rape incidents involving public transport providers as well as Grab and Uber in Malaysia. Hence, it is important to exercise the usual precautions and common sense when taking public/shared transportation.
• Exercise caution and prudence at all times and avoid large gatherings and demonstrations. Monitor media reports closely or check with the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur or Consulate-General in Johor Bahru on the situation.

Travel Funds & Valuables:

• In Malaysia, major credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard are accepted by local established retailers. Avoid carrying too much cash.
• If money and valuables are stolen or lost, make a police report at the nearest police station.
• In an emergency, you can arrange for funds to be remitted to you by your family or friends through a bank. Emergency funds can also be remitted to you via the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur or Consulate-General in Johor Bahru; if your family or friends deposit funds with the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Consular Directorate.

Malaysia imposes severe penalties including death for possession or trafficking of even small amount of illegal drugs. Do not convey or transport any parcel, especially across the border when asked by a stranger. Should such parcels contain illegal drugs, you risk being found guilty of the possession, smuggling or trafficking of drugs. You should also never leave your belongings unattended or under the “care” of any stranger.

Additional information

Driving of Foreign-registered Vehicle in Malaysia:

• Consider applying for the International Driving Permit (IDP) for driving in Malaysia. The IDP is recognised worldwide and is also a useful form of identification.
• Singaporeans in Malaysia who hold a long-term stay visa for employment or residency must obtain a Malaysia driving licence if they want to drive in Malaysia. Those who possess a valid foreign driving licence may contact the Road Transport Department of Malaysia (JPJ) to seek full information on the procedures in driving licence conversion.
• Foreigners driving vehicles in Malaysia can check and make payment for their fines issued by the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) through the MyBayar website or mobile application. For more information, please visit the MyBayar website or RMP Traffic Department’s Facebook page.
• The High Commission in Kuala Lumpur and the Consulate-General in Johor Bahru are able to certify true copies of the Singapore driving license. For other requirements, Singaporeans may check with JPJ directly. Hospitalisation and Death:

• In the case of an accident or medical emergency, call 999. Any injured or sick persons are usually brought to the nearest state hospital.  A medical transfer to Singapore by ambulance is possible. However, the superintending doctor in the Malaysian hospital as well as the receiving hospital in Singapore will need to consent to the transfer. The cost of medical transfer is to be borne by the individual/medical insurance. The High Commission in Kuala Lumpur or the Consulate-General in Johor Bahru can provide a list of service providers for such medical transfers.
• In the event of the death of a Singaporean, specific approval from the local authorities (like hospital and/or police) is required before the remains can be claimed for repatriation or cremation. An undertaker can be appointed to assist in this and to obtain all other necessary related documentation.

General Travel Advice

Singaporeans planning overseas travel are reminded to take the necessary precautions, including being prepared to deal with accidents, natural disasters or terrorist attacks. Singaporeans are also reminded to be familiar with your destination’s local laws, customs, and COVID-19 regulations.

Demonstrations do occur in major cities across the world. Such demonstrations can sometimes escalate into violence. It is important for Singaporeans to keep abreast of local news, avoid any protests or demonstrations and heed the advice of the local authorities.

When participating in outdoor leisure activities overseas, Singaporeans should be mindful that certain sporting activities, especially in open seas, may carry risks. Besides ensuring that one has the physical competencies and appropriate condition to undertake the activity, every effort should be made to ascertain if the trip organiser or guide is reliable and competent, and that appropriate safety and contingency plans are in place. When in doubt, Singaporeans should consult the relevant professional bodies or sporting associations for specific advice.

Advisory: Email Scams

There have been reports of individuals receiving scam emails/messages purportedly sent from friends in distress overseas. These emails/messages typically originate from an email address/social media known to the receiver bearing claims of the sender getting into trouble overseas and urgently requesting financial assistance. The sender would also claim to have approached a Singapore Embassy/Consulate and the local Police for help to no avail.

MFA takes the safety of all Singaporeans very seriously.  Singaporeans in distress approaching our Overseas Missions for assistance will be rendered with all necessary consular assistance.  If you receive such emails/messages from purported friends seeking funds transfers, we strongly advise you to call them first to verify the authenticity of the emails/messages before responding to their request.  It is also not advisable to give out any personal information such as NRIC/passport numbers, address, telephone number, etc.  Any form of reply, even one of non-interest, could result in more unsolicited emails.  Members of the public who suspect that they have fallen prey to such scams should report the matter to the Police immediately.  Should Singaporeans abroad require consular assistance, they can contact the nearest Singapore Overseas  Mission  or call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 24-hr Duty Office at +65 6379 8800/+65 6379 8855.

Malaysian rapper Namewee is taking off again after his concert tour was previously grounded.

The artiste – whose real name is Wee Meng Chee – revealed on social media on Sept 10 the next four stops for his Namewee Big Bird Tour.

The 41-year-old will perform in Melbourne, Australia, on Oct 21; Kaohsiung, Taiwan, on Nov 2; Singapore on Nov 9; and Genting, Malaysia, on Nov 16.

The Singapore leg of his tour will be held at the Esplanade Theatre, and ticket sales will begin at noon on Sept 12.

The rapper last performed here at music event Sundown Festival in August 2023.

Taiwanese news portal ETtoday reported on Aug 23 that the tour – which kicked off in Taipei in April 2023 – incurred huge losses when it was halted after the show. It was originally scheduled to stop in 15 other cities, such as Singapore, Osaka, Paris, Toronto and Sydney.
