Thankfully, there is a neat hack to get it done. And that’s precisely what I’m going to talk about in this short piece.

Well, there is no built-in feature to do so. Hence, we will use a third-party Safari extension to activate dark theme for unsupported Safari websites. 

Don’t worry, the App Store has some really good extensions that are designed for this specific purpose. Having tried several extensions, I have found Nightfall up to the mark in most aspects. Even better, it’s also available for free.

That means you won’t have to shell out any bucks to get the most out of this app. On top of all, Nightfall supports not only iPhone and iPad but also Mac. 

Download Nightfall on Your iPhone and Enable It 

• To get going, download the Nightfall app on your device (direct link).
• After you have installed the app, open the Settings app -> scroll down and choose Safari .
• Under the General section, tap on Extensions .

• Find Nightfall and turn it on. 

Activate Dark Mode for Unsupported Websites 

Once you have successfully turned on the Nightfall on your device, you will need to activate it for the specific websites. 

• Launch Safari on your iPhone or iPad and then head over to the website where you wish to enable the dark mode. 
• Now, tap on the aA text button at the bottom of the screen -> select Nightfall . 
• Next, turn on the toggle for it and allow it to see and alter the webpage content and your browsing history.  

Important note:

• It’s worth bearing in mind that Nightfall can read and alter sensitive information on web pages, including your browsing history, credit cards, phone numbers, and passwords.
• Besides, it can also view the current tab’s webpage when you use the extension.
• While this extension is reliable, we would recommend you not use it on sensitive web pages. Keep it specifically for certain websites like Wikipedia for reading or browsing the web.
• Next up, customize Nightfall to your liking. For instance, you can choose to darken maps, dim images, adjust image brightness, invert PNG images, and even select a desired dark modes theme like dark gray, Molokai, and midnight.

In the end, make sure to hit Done at the top right to confirm the action. 

Voila! The change will come into play with immediate effect and the dark mode will be implemented across the website.

With Reader, you can choose the website's background color, with two light and two dark colors (gray and black) available. 

To enable Reader for all websites where it's available, follow these steps:

Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Tap Safari.

Scroll down to Settings For Websites.

Compatible websites will now be displayed in dark mode . Once you choose a preferred background color for Reader, all future websites opened in Reader will automatically open in that color unless you change it again. While Chrome extensions work great on the desktop, they aren't supported on mobile. As a result, extensions like Night Eye and Dark Reader that work on Chrome for Mac and Windows aren't available on Chrome for iPhone and Android. The only option is to enable dark mode on the iPhone, which will cause certain UI elements in Google Chrome, like the address bar, buttons, and settings, to appear in dark mode. How To : Safari Finally Has More Dark Mode Powers for Your iPhone

Not all websites are created equal, and that's why Safari doesn't apply Dark Mode to each webpage you visit during your iPhone's system-wide dark appearance. But in Safari's latest update , Apple gives its web browser more power to automatically apply Dark Mode to specific website content without having to use extensions like Noir .

While Safari's toolbars and unique UI elements conform to Dark Mode, Apple leaves it up to web designers to implement dark themes to match the system appearance on your device. Aside from .txt files, I've also been able to get some .1st, .dtd, .log, .nfo, .sgml, .srt, .tex, and .text files to switch to dark views, but I have not had the same success for .xml, .rtf, .html, and other file types yet.

If you don't want to install iOS 16.4 yet, you can use a Safari extension like Noir or Neo Noir to automatically switch most websites to a dark theme when your iPhone's system-wide Dark Mode is on.

How to Turn on Safari's Dark Mode via MacOS

At night, black text on white backgrounds is particularly tough on your eyes. It's very simple to switch on Dark Mode for your Mac. It doesn't just turn on Dark Mode for Safari, it does so for all your apps but that's perfect for protecting your eyes late at night or in dim lighting conditions.

Depending on the website you're viewing, the only thing that may go dark with MacOS's Dark Mode is the buttons and menus around the website. To ensure the site goes fully dark to protect your eyes, you need to use Safari's Reader View.

Safari Reader View only works on certain websites. Often, this is restricted to blog posts and other text-heavy websites. It's worth using when able to though. 

On the website you want to view, click the Reader button on the left side of the search field.

This only appears on websites that support Safari Reader View.

Click the letter button on the right side of the search field.

Click the black background to change the background color. 

You can also adjust font size and font choice here.

The background has now been changed to a dark one with white text. 

Click away from the article to revert back to the original look or press the Escape key on your keyboard.

How to Use a Dark Mode Extension in Safari

The above solutions work only on a limited number of websites. If you want to enable Dark Mode for every website, you need to use a Safari extension. Many of these cost money but they can be useful. We recommend using either Night Eye which is free but limited or paying a one-off fee for Dark Reader. The process is the same for both extensions.

Install either Night Eye or Dark Reade r from the Mac App Store .

Open Safari then click Safari > Preferences .

Click the Extensions tab.

Check the box next to your newly installed extension to enable Dark Mode.

Both of these extensions should convert the vast majority of websites to Dark Mode as and when you need it.

Dark Mode on iPhone and iPad

Starting in iOS 13, Apple made a systemwide Dark Mode option available, and the company has continued to build dark mode features into iOS since then. Most first-party apps and the majority of third-party apps support both Dark Mode and Light Mode, and there are options for automatically using Light Mode during the day and Dark Mode at night if preferred.

Enabling Dark Mode can be done through the Settings app on the iPhone (or iPad ) under the Display & Brightness section. You can select Light or Dark mode, or choose to enable them based on the time of day (Sunrise to Sunset) or a custom-picked schedule. If you long press on the Brightness indicator in Control Center, you can toggle on Dark Mode from there if you don't want to use the Settings app, and there's also a full Dark Mode/Light Mode toggle you can enable.

To make sure you have that Dark Mode Control Center option, go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls. From there, tap the green "+" next to "Dark Appearance" to add that button to Control Center.

iOS 18: How to use Dark Mode app icons on iPhone

For the first time, iOS 18 comes with the ability to change iPhone app colors natively. Whether you want to use a dark theme all the time or have apps switch automatically, here’s how to use Dark Mode app icons on iPhone with iOS 18.

Apple improved customization with iOS 13 in 2019 with a system-wide Dark Mode and iOS 14 in 2020 introduced the first widgets. Every year since, we’ve been  getting more flexibility .

Now the iOS 18 beta delivers the ability to natively change  iPhone  app colors including Dark Mode, tinting, and Automatic switching between Light and Dark Mode.

How to use Dark Mode app icons on iPhone in iOS 18

• Make sure you’re running the iOS 18 beta on your iPhone ( full guide )
• From the Home Screen,  press and hold in an empty area
• Tap Edit  in the top left corner
• Now pick  Customize
• Choose Dark or Tinted (or Automatic )
• Use Tinted to create a monochromatic Dark Mode app icon setup where you can choose the accent color
• If you choose Dark or Tinted, you can tap the sun icon in the bottom left corner to toggle between the system-wide Dark and Light Mode to see how your apps look

Some things to keep in mind with the beta:

• You can only Dark Mode for all apps, not individual ones
• Changing the color of all apps with the dark mode or tinting feature in iOS 18 does apply to both first and third-party apps in the current beta

Here’s how it looks to use Dark Mode app icons on iPhone in iOS 18:

If you choose automatic during the day, you won’t see the app icons change until nighttime. So choose Dark if you want to see them change immediately.

Turn off dark mode on Safari iPhone Software version 14.8.1

I have dark mode enabled on my iPhone but Safari has always been in light mode.

Recently a popup came up asking if I want Safari to be updated to dark mode. I was trying to swipe it away but accidentally enabled dark mode. Now I can't find the setting to change it back to light.

Is is possible to revert this change?

To adjust between Dark Mode and Light Mode on iPhone, you'd typically follow these steps: Use Dark Mode on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

In Safari, are you using Google to search, and seeing that page as dark? If so, reopen that page and scroll down to the very bottom until you can't scroll any further. You should see 'Dark theme: on'. If you tap on that writing, it should change to 'Dark theme: off'.

Safari on iOS is about to get a neat Dark Mode upgrade

The Dark Mode within Apple’s Safari web browser is about to get better within iOS 15 or when iOS 16 arrives on i Phone later this year, according to a new report.

When searching within the public WebKit code on GitHub , 9to5Mac found evidence of a new setting that would enable users to set their light or dark mode preferences for individual websites.

While Dark Mode has been around for more than two years on Safari, sites optimised for the the retina protection mode will display content in line with the overall system settings.

Now, according to that WebKit code, Apple is about to give users more power with an option that enables “overriding the system colour-scheme with a per-website preference.” So, even if your phone is in light mode, you can choose to view and save a preference for a certain site to be displayed in Dark Mode, according to the code.

The feature is labelled as “to be announced” within the WebKit code, so it’s not clear whether it’ll arrive before iOS 16. Apple is preparing to launch iOS 15.4 in the next few weeks, which is thought to be the last major update before Apple announces iOS 16 this summer.

Elsewhere, Safari is also doing to allow users to allow or block the “modal” pop ups on a site-by-site basis, according to the report, enabling users to prohibit those particularly active sites from affecting their experience too much.

In the meantime iPhone and iPad users can look forward to a significant iOS 15.4 upgrade, which includes Face ID with Mask, a brand new Siri voice in the US, new anti-stalking features for AirTags, and the Universal Control feature which enables an iPad to be used as an extra display for a Mac with the ability to drag and drop content. We expect iOS 15.4 to arrive sometime this month, following the rumoured launch event on March 8.

The updated Safari app is Apple’s best-kept secret in iOS 18

Safari, for all its quirks, still commands the lion’s share of web browsers on Apple products. But compared to what its rivals offer on Android, it also comes out as the laziest in terms of innovation.

With iOS 18 , Apple is turning the AI knob to the max , and the ripple effects of that approach are reflected in the latest builds of iOS and iPadOS, as well. Much attention has also been paid to making the web browser more convenient.

But a couple of features really stand out, and they dramatically improve one of Safari’s fundamental utilities: providing information on a screen in a less frustrating fashion.

Finally, a worthy reader

When Apple announced Reader mode in Safari across all its platforms, I dismissed it as just another small update. But the execution has really stood out for me, especially the tasteful background colors and how clean everything looks right from the start.

As soon as you land on a compatible website, the URL bar flashes a “Reader Mode available” message. In case you miss it, the icon to the left end of the pill-shaped bar also changes its shape to that of a notebook held vertically.

Tapping on it opens a small window with two prominent buttons: Show Reader and Listen to Page. Both are pretty self-descriptive. Once you enable the Reader mode for a webpage, it just doesn’t pick a random background color. Instead, it plays to the tunes of your phone’s default light/dark mode settings. So, if you’ve got light mode enabled, the Reader mode picks up the theme with a black background.

In case you’re wondering, there are four colors to choose from: white, black, gray, and beige. The dark version looks the best, but for reading, the beige color scheme, with its vintage newspaper-esque feel, takes the cake. It’s funny that Reader mode doesn’t work on Apple’s website. Irony, eh? Jokes apart, you can adjust size and font without losing yourself in a maze of hidden settings.

Apple has created a clean scrolling list of fonts in the same pop-up window as the core reading controls, alongside page magnification adjustments. Another understated perk is that you can set the Reader mode to trigger automatically for any website of your choice.

For example, if you’re currently reading this article on Digital Trends, tap the three-dot ellipsis icon in the Reader mode window, and as it expands, enable the toggle that says “Use Reader Automatically.”

Of course, it’s AI season, so a smattering of Apple Intelligence is making its way to the Reader mode in Safari. It only makes sense, especially when it serves a purpose and is not merely there for some gimmick, unlike what we recently saw with Google’s Pixel Studio app .

You may also notice a pink icon right below the headline of a webpage, proclaiming the word “Summarize” in bold. Well, it does exactly what it says. Tap on it, and you will see a colorful wave passing over the text for a few seconds. Voila, you have a summary presented right at the top.

But what’s not-so-voila about this summary is that it’s not always accurate. Occasionally, it can simply miss the most important elements of the story, but otherwise, it does a fairly good job of diluting a long story into a concise version. It’s not surprising, as the Summarizer feature in the Mail app also makes similar mistakes. As the adage goes, it’s just another day for AI.

On the Android side, the situation is a bit complicated. Chrome on mobile lacks a native Reader mode. You have to download a dedicated app by Google from the Play Store, head back to Chrome, and then tap on the floating shortcut to enable Reader mode on any webpage of your choice. Apple has a better implementation here, and it shows.

Snap, and it shall be done

In 2019, Google added the Infinity Gauntlet to its search results . A click on this apocalyptic hand wiped half the search results — gone, reduced to atoms — with the same kind of animation as the Avengers vanishing into nothingness when the Mad Titan snapped his fingers.

Apple has added something similar to Safari with iOS 18. But instead of restoring balance to the universe in a murderous fashion, this one wipes off visual distractions from a webpage. Think of pesky ads, scrolling widgets, pop-up videos, and other unnecessary items.

It can wipe anything. The headline, images, embeds, pop-ups, unnecessary social icons … whatever you’d like. Heck, go ahead, wipe off the entire text, and stare into the nothingness of a bright OLED screen. All you need to do is tap the Reader mode icon in the URL bar and select “Hide distracting items.”

Next, scroll through the webpage, find any distracting element, and select it. It will gloriously vanish like sand flying in a desert storm. It’s beautiful to witness, even though it’s tedious, compared to the convenience of having a pristine view in Reader mode.

But I think it’s more of a fail-safe measure for web pages where Reader mode can’t be enabled, such as Apple’s own web page that describes the new iOS 18 feature. On a serious note, I don’t know how happy advertisers are about this feature, but it certainly impacts the click-driven rule for studying (read: rewarding) the impact of ads.

A few other niceties

There are some other new features that haven’t received much attention, but they are here nonetheless. Highlights are a neat addition to flash important information from a web page in a more noticeable fashion. Apple has also made the native browsing tools context-aware. You will see Reader mode controls and the voice reader facility only on web pages where they make sense. For example, they won’t appear on your bank’s website.

Say you land on a website with content in a non-native language. Instead of rummaging through the menu for the translate button, in iOS 18, you will see it in the quick pop-up with a single tap on the left edge of the URL bar. Apple has also pulled tools that used to be hidden behind a few layers and now prominently shows them as a scrolling list in the main Safari toolbar. These include core tab controls, page actions, and link behavior.

Furthermore, you can adjust their position to your liking based on how frequently you use them. Finally, the Apple browser now supports extensions and content blockers in web apps. Many other technical changes have also been made in the background, which you can read about on Apple’s website .

Overall, Safari in iOS 18 (and iPadOS 18) is not a revolution by any stretch of the imagination. But for the new features that are here, they’ve been executed nicely. And I’ll take that instead of an ambitious but buggy mess.

But more than anything, it’s a practically helpful set of features. This isn’t a flashy set of AI tricks that need a lot of pricey computational power. It all lives in an app that you visit regularly for meaningful tasks. And I love it.

“Apple does things practically.” Or, “Apple is late because it’s perfecting the tech.” “Would you prefer being the first or the best?” These are just some of the recurring arguments you will find in any heated Reddit thread or social media post hunting for some rage bait clout.

Yet, there’s some truth to it, as well. And a whole lot of hidden tech that sometimes takes a decade to come out. Apple Intelligence is the best example of one such leap, and it’s being seen as Apple’s answer to the generative AI rush.

Rumors about Apple iPhone models for 2025 are already starting to circulate, even though we’re still waiting for the iPhone 16 series to be officially announced this fall. While we’re still pretty far out for the anticipated release of the iPhone 17 models next year, that hasn’t stopped speculation that Apple may be set for a major change to its iPhone 17 lineup with the release of a much slimmer iPhone called the iPhone Air.

The source of this speculation — and that’s all it is so far — is Front Page Tech’s Jon Prosser, who posted a 12-minute YouTube video delving into Apple potentaially changing the lineup of the iPhone 17 models and introducing a new device with a new name.

I've been using iOS 18 on my iPhone 15 Pro Max since the first developer version was released in June at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The upcoming software update for iPhone, set to be released this fall, has plenty of exciting features. I have a clear favorite feature, and I'm starting to appreciate many more.

iOS 18 remains an unfinished product from the perspective of anyone outside of Apple, as we have yet to see its most anticipated new features debut. At least for now, here's what I like. Dark app icons for the win
