Kos is located in the south-eastern Aegean Sea south of Kalymnos and north of Nisyros at the ancient Keramiko gulf (Kerme Körfezi) or Kos gulf and it abstains just 3 naval miles from Asia Minor coasts. It is the third largest island in the Dodecanese it has extent 290, 29 kilometres and the circumnavigation of island is calculated in the 60 naval miles. It was from the prehistoric times an important channel of the sea ways that started from the Black Sea and along the shoreline of Asia Minor and the islands of Aegean it reached the North Africa.

Kos: city map, main districts and tourist spots

All the main tourist spots on the map of Kos are concentrated within walking distance of the port: the ruins of the ancient agora, the Hippocratic sycamore, the medieval castle. But most of the nightlife (clubs, bars, discos) is concentrated in New Town - on a map of Kos, check the area north of the port.

In general, the port on a map of Kos with hotels can be used as a starting point - yachts and boats from other resorts arrive here, kilometers of beaches stretch from here, and the best restaurants and cafes are concentrated on the promenades.

The area in the heart of Kos is Old Town, with traditional narrow streets, stores and restaurants. The most popular with tourists are the neighborhoods near the harbor (if you don't know where to stay in Kos, check out the hotels in the area - there are options for every star rating). From this area, you can walk to all the historical sights and the nearest beaches, and you'll always be in the center of the action.

Another area of Kos where it is better to live as a tourist is the suburb of Lambi, 4 kilometers from the center. It is a developed tourist center with a mass of hotels, a good beach and stores. A little farther (10 kilometers from the center) is the area of Psalidi village - many prefer to settle here, near the beaches, and in the Old Town to go on excursions. There are no dangerous areas in Kos - no industrial and working neighborhoods, almost everywhere tourists live here.

Just like any destination it can be hard to decide what to do on your trip, especially if you have limited time. For an unforgettable holiday in Kos, here are the best places to add to your itinerary: 

#1 Antimachia Castle

Visiting the ruins of Antimachia Castle is an absolute must-do activity for anyone visiting Kos! Located on a small hill overlooking the village on Antimachia, it offers stunning sea views no matter what time of day. On a clear and sunny day, these views are breathtaking. But even if it’s a bit cloudy and the views are restricted, the castle still makes for a wonderful day out.

The castle dates back to the 14th century and is free of charge for visitors. It’s also easy to find, with plenty of signage in the area that will help guide you to it. You should spend at least 1 hour here to wander around the site and take some epic photos.

When exploring the ruins, it’s best to wear sturdy footwear as the ground is a bit uneven and loose in places – and if you’re visiting on a hot and sunny day, don’t forget to bring a hat and pack sunscreen!

As you only need a few hours here, most travellers combine seeing the Castle with visiting Antimachia Traditional Windmill and Plaka forest on the same day.

#2 Antimachia Traditional Windmill 

One of the island’s hidden gems is Antimachia Traditional Windmill – the oldest working windmill on the island! 

Located in the village of Antimachia, this wonderful old windmill is looked after by a local family. Visiting the windmill is a great way to learn about the history of this windmill, the local area and its importance for the island. You’ll be welcomed warmly by the family, who will offer you some samples of biscuits and tasty breadsticks made from the flour produced by the mill – with special mention for their delicious lemon biscuits! The tour of the windmill is unique because the family have so much knowledge, and you’ll even get to turn the roof.

Entry is free but they do ask for a small donation of €3.00 in exchange for a bag of biscuits or breadsticks.

Don’t forget to say hi to the really lovely donkey there too – he’s very friendly! The family also offers an amazing photography service where they take some wonderful photos of you outside the windmill.

If you are visiting in the summer months or when it’s busy, make sure you protect yourself from the sun. There is not a lot of shade around the Windmill apart from inside it or the gift shop. 

You only need to spend 2 hours here, so most people visit it on the way to Plaka Forest or heading towards some of the beaches on the south of the island. 

#3 Plaka Forest

If you’re looking for something to do for half a day when visiting Kos, the Plaka Forest is an absolute must-see! It’s located not far from Antimachia on the route towards Kefalos and it’s free to enter and park up.

Once inside, the beautiful pine forest provides a great escape from the harsh Mediterranean sun. You can explore the area, take in the fresh air and enjoy some peace away from the hustle and bustle of Kos town.

Plus there are plenty of picnic tables so you can stop for a bite to eat or even just use them as a spot to relax and read a book while taking in your beautiful surroundings.

But be warned – there are free-roaming peacocks that are perfectly confident to approach you and try to steal your food so it’s not the best place if you’re not a fan of birds. However, they can be quite fascinating to observe if you take the time to watch them for a while.

#4 Plane Tree Of Hippocrates

One experience not to be missed is the Plane Tree of Hippocrates in the old town – an iconic tree steeped in history and symbolism. 

Located in the old town, this tree has long been associated with Hippocrates of Kos – often referred to as the father of medicine – who was said to have taught his pupils beneath its branches.  Although you can’t sit under the tree due to a fence that has been installed around it to protect it, it’s still a really cool and unique experience. The best part – it’s free to visit! All you need is a few moments of your time. 

As you do not need much time to admire this famous tree, you can easily combine this stop with other attractions like Exploring Kos Town.

The Plane Tree of Hippocrates also doesn’t tend to get very crowded as it’s just in the street. But if you’re looking for a moment of quiet contemplation or would like to take some photos without being surrounded by other tourists, then it’s best to go early in the morning.

#5 Kos Old Town

Make sure to take some time out of your itinerary for a visit to the cosy old town. Located on the east coast of the island, this old port town is full of charm and history.

Whether you’re an avid history buff or just looking for a romantic evening stroll, there are plenty of things to do here. One of the highlights is Kos’s old town castle. This ancient fortress stands tall, with views overlooking the town and harbour.

There are also some lovely boutique shops to explore, as well as a wide selection of cafes, restaurants and bars. For amazing tasting Gyros, make sure you stop by Lefteris Grill House! Even though the bars and cocktail spots are great to visit during the day, stopping by at night is a completely different atmosphere. During the evenings you will find live music and an amazing atmosphere that you will not find anywhere else. 

Kos old town is also one of the most popular stops for island hopping tours. You may be worried about missing your next ferry but don’t be! You can already get a true taste of Kos just by visiting Kos Old Town for an hour or two.

It’s also a really popular place to stay because you can easily access other parts of the island, Greece or even Turkey from here. Many of the most popular sites like Casa Romana, the Tree of Hippocrates and Ancient Agora are very close to Kos old town so you can easily visit them all in one day.

It’s recommended to spend at least 4 or more hours here so you can sample what the city has to offer. The dress code here is very relaxed but if you are visiting any churches places you need to be respectful, you will be asked to cover up. 

#6 Roman Odeon Of Kos

Built around the 2nd and 3rd centuries, this small yet interesting site is conveniently located at one end of the Roman archaeological zone (southwest of the Old Town). Its small size compared with many others makes it a more intimate and personal experience when exploring.

Once you’re inside you can read the several information boards located in the tunnel which provide detailed information about the history of the site, all available in both Greek and English. 

And that’s not all – you don’t need to spend too much time here either as it typically takes around an hour to explore. That way, you can combine it with other activities such as exploring Kos Old Town or visiting the Tree of Hippocrates and Ancient Agora.

Plus, best of all, it’s free to enter!

#7 Asklepieion Kos

This ancient medical centre is located just 4 km southeast of the main town, and if you’re coming from Marmari it’s a great stop before heading into town. 

With opening hours of 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM, it’s best to visit early in the morning or late afternoon during the summer months. The entrance fee is €8.00 for adults and kids under 13 get in for free!

Not only does Asklipieio Kos offer a unique insight into an ancient healing centre, but the views around the site are amazing. Be sure to bring your camera along so you can take pictures of all the scenery. There are also small shops around the site where you can buy gifts, water and even ice cream to cool off in the summer heat.

#8 Embrós Hot Springs

For an out-of-the-ordinary experience when visiting Kos, Embrós Hot Springs is the perfect place to visit. Known locally as Therma Beach, it offers a chance to take a dip in natural mineral hot springs – and it doesn’t cost anything!

The springs are located at the base of a steep hill, and there are two car parks. To make things easier, your best bet is to park in the top car park right on the road – it has a tiny café for snacks and refreshments. Here is also where the local bus services drop off visitors. There are a few local transport routes that come past here but the most popular is probably the Kos-Zia bus. 

Once you hit the beach, it’s time for some fun! 

The hot springs make the sea surprisingly warm and comfortable, so bring your swimming gear and enjoy a relaxing dip. Just be sure to bring some beach shoes with you as the sand is pebbly and the water can get a bit murky due to all the minerals in it. Plus, there are no toilets at the beach so plan ahead if you need them.

#9 Neratzia Castle

Neratzia Castle, also known as the Castle of the Knights, is a great way to spend an hour when visiting Kos town. It’s at the entrance of Kos Harbor, so it’s super easy to get to if you’re taking a ferry to or from the island. Best of all, visiting is free, so it’s a great way to add some history and culture to your trip.

If you’re interested in the history of the castle, be sure to do some research before you go as there isn’t much information available once you arrive. But even without any historical context, wandering around the remains of the castle is still a really cool experience. There are no barriers holding you back, so you can get close up to the castle walls and really take it all in – just be respectful of your surroundings.

The views from the castle are particularly wonderful. You can see the sea and parts of Kos town so It’s a great spot to take some photos or just take in the peace and quiet.

#10 Ancient Agora

This ancient market site is an interesting attraction to add to your itinerary when visiting Kos Town. It is also open all day and completely free to explore.

The ruins of temples, baths, and houses that you can explore date back as far as the 3rd century BC. The altar of Dionysus is definitely worth the few minutes walk and you’ll be amazed at how well-preserved it is.

This historical site is located right in the middle of Kos town which means you can conveniently have your lunch or dinner in one of the local restaurants while gazing at Ancient Agora.

Exploring Ancient Agora isn’t easy as some parts of it can be overgrown, so make sure to bring supportive shoes if you want to explore more. Also, don’t forget to bring water with you as it can get quite hot in the summer months!

#11 Casa Romana

One of the best things to do when visiting Kos is visit Casa Romana. This stunning mansion dates back to the 2nd century and is based on the ruins of an ancient Roman house – meaning you can get a glimpse into what it was like to live in that time period.

The mansion is beautifully restored, with a style similar to the buildings found in Pompeii, making it an interesting and captivating activity that you will not forget soon.

Upon entry, visitors are provided with clear explanations in English about the house, so even if you don’t have any prior knowledge of its history you can still enjoy the experience.

At just €6.00 for admission, Casa Romana is a great value for money and there are also discounts available for children, students and pensioners. The house is open 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM so you can take your time exploring the place without feeling rushed.

#12 Agios Stefanos Beach

This stunning stretch of white sand and crystal blue waters is considered one of the best beaches in Kos, with plenty of things to do and explore.

Once you soak up the sun and take a dip in the gorgeous water, why not explore some of the ancient ruins nearby? The ruins are within walking distance of the beach, so you can spend 10 minutes or so taking a look around.

If you’re feeling adventurous, bring your mask and snorkel (or rent one) to check out the amazing fish and sea life that lives near this beach. You can even swim out to a nearby island called Kastri, where you’ll see the stunning views from the other side of the beach.  The waters are also shark free across Greece so you can explore the waters trouble-free! 

At low tide, you can also enjoy walking out far into the shallow waters. This makes this beach even more enjoyable in that you don’t need to fully jump in to cool off!

Just be aware that there is no toilet on the beach. But there is a small cafe at Agios Stefanos Beach to grab a cold beer, some snacks, and of course, lots of water.

Located 16 km southeast of Kos town, its picturesque location on the mountainside makes it a popular spot for tourists to enjoy some breathtaking sunsets.

Crowds often gather at the start of the village in the hope of catching a glimpse of this stunning spectacle, but by booking a table in one of the restaurants, you can watch the sun go down without being amongst the hustle and bustle.

If you’re pressed for time, it’s also worth considering booking a tour that will take you directly to Zia to watch the sunset – they do all the hard work so you don’t have to worry about transport and can sit back, relax and enjoy a glass of wine or two.

Not only is Zia great for watching the sunset, but it’s also a wonderful spot for mountain walks and strolling around the cobbled streets – not to mention some great shopping opportunities too!

There are multiple places around Kos where you can buy souvenirs to remind you of your trip, but Zia is the best place to get them. Here you will find your usual products like olive oil, soap and Ouzo but then there are endless homemade and unique products here you won’t find anywhere else on the island. 

Due to Zia’s location, there is a lot of uphill walking. So do not wear shoes with a heel here and avoid visiting in the mid-day sun during the summer months, it makes exploring here uncomfortable.

The ruins of the Asklepieion date back thousands of years to the fourth century B.C.E. According to the Kos tourism website , it is considered to be the "most significant archeological monument" on the island. The site where Hippocrates founded his school and taught medicine is open to the public every day except Tuesdays, and entry ranges from 4 to 8 euros, depending on the season.

Want to stand in Hippocrates' shadow (again)? Head to the Plane Tree of Hippocrates located at the Castle of Neratzia. According to Discovering Kos , Hippocrates regularly taught classes in this spot under the shade of a massive tree. The tree that stands here today is allegedly 500 years old, making it one of the oldest in Europe.

Test the thermal springs at Agios Fokas Beach.

If the hot sun isn't enough for you, you can always go for a soak in the thermal springs at Agios Fokas Beach. The springs' temperatures typically hover between 107 to 122 degrees, according to Greeka , but don't worry too much about getting burned, as the spring water mixes with the seawater, creating a delightfully warm experience. 

Explore Kos Old Town.

Take a little time away from the historical sites and the beaches to visit Kos Old Town. It's a place where you'll find plenty to eat and drink at countless cafes and places to pick up a trinket or two to remember your travels. The best part? There are no cars allowed in the Old Town, making it a stellar place for a stroll.

Blue Lagoon Village

Searching for the best things to do in Kos?  Look no further. The island of Kos in Greece is worth visiting and is one of my favorite travel destinations in Europe as a place to relax, exhale, and reboot. I traveled to Kos many times and there are lots of things to do on this beautiful Greek island of the Dodecanese island group. The wide sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, rich history, archeological sites, delicious Greek food, outstanding hospitality, and the lively center of Kos Town make Kos Island one of the best Greek travel destinations for all types of travelers. In this Kos travel guide, I will share my hand-picked experiences that resulted in the 15 best things to do in Kos, Greece .

1. Enjoy Beach Life in Kos

With a stunning coastline of 112 kilometers (70 miles), there are plenty of beautiful beaches in Kos to have relaxing days on the beach, enjoying the sounds of the sea. Most of the best beaches in Kos are sandy and offer tourist facilities like bathrooms, sunbeds, umbrellas, bars, restaurants, and water sports activities, which are fun activities in Kos. Now, what are the best beaches in Kos? I will share a few of my favorite beaches:

Paradise Beach in Kefalos

One of the most popular beaches in Kos is  Paradise Beach , east of Kefalos, situated in the southwest of the Island, approximately 33 km from Kos Town. Paradise Beach is well known because of the pale sand and shallow clear seawater. On this side of the island, the sea is pretty calm and less windy. There are also several watersports activities like banana boating or jetski.

Lambi Beach near Kos Town

Lambi Beach Kos is a long sandy beach located just outside Kos Town, easily accessible by bike or a short walk. It’s not the most beautiful and quiet beach, but Lambi Beach is centrally located for those staying in Kos Town, Lambi, and even Psalidi Kos.

The beaches around Lambi Kos are well-organized with lots of sun loungers. However, in Kos' high season it can get pretty busy with lots of tourists. Expect a lively atmosphere with music from the beach bars and water sport activities. I haven't experienced Lambi Beach as overcrowded, but if you prefer a more quite beach, Lambi is probably not the place for you.

Must see Kos: TamTam Beach near Marmari

My personal favorite beach in Kos Greece is Tam Tam Beach, located 16 km from Kos Town near Mastihari, opposite Lido Water Park. TamTam Beach is a hidden gem in Kos ; a small, safe, and less crowded beach with small sand dunes. When you’re walking down through the dunes you can use sun beds, umbrellas, and windscreens for a fair price, which also includes a ticket for a free (soft) drink at the taverna of Tam Tam Beach. There’s also a small children’s playground and a nice shop with fair-trade products.   

Tam Tam Beach is part of the endless sandy beach of Marmari. At this amazing beach, you can enjoy the enchanted dune landscape, the soft white sand underneath your feet, the turquoise blue sea , and several water sports facilities.

I highly recommend visiting Tam Tam Beach. Don’t forget to go for lunch in their Taverna overlooking the dunes and turquoise blue sea; one of my best travel tips if you travel to Kos . The views are stunning, just like their food!

Agios Stefanos Beach

Agios Stefanos Beach is one of the best beaches in Kos to visit because of its diversity. The beach offers both white sand and pebbles including beautiful crystal clear turquoise water and perfect views of the picturesque islet of Kastri , crested by a tall rock. With a pedal boat, you’re able to peddle to Kastri island and admire the church of Agios Nicolaos. On Agios Stefanos Beach you can also find ruins of two basilicas.

Mastichari Beach on Kos Island

The town of Mastichari offers a white sandy beach with plenty of accommodations, restaurants, and shops. Mastichari Beach has a laid-back vibe. It also has a little port from where you can go to Kalymnos by boat.

Other top  beaches on Kos Island in Greece are Camel Beach, Mylos Beach, Psalidi Beach, Kefalos Beach, Kardamena Beach, Marmari Beach, and Tigaki Beach. Exploring the different paradise beaches is one of the most popular things to do in Kos.

2. Eat local!

Visiting local Kos restaurants and tasting delicious Greek food is one of the best things to do in Kos. Searching for Kos restaurant tips? Greece is a foodie’s dream come true. Kos Island offers many restaurants, varying from trendy, international (and touristic) restaurants with a sea view at the waterfront to authentic Greek Taverns in the smaller (back)streets, serving delicious, local Kos food. Two of my favorite local restaurants in Kos Town are Mummy’s Cooking (Ευδοκία-Eudokia) and Astakos Fish Taverne .

I love the genuine Greek cuisine, nothing can beat those delicious traditional dishes like olives and their olive oil, fresh seafood like fish and octopus,   feta cheese, gemista, dolmades, papoutsakia, taramasalata, and of course desserts like kataifi and baklava. Therefore, I recommend visiting a few local Kos restaurants, to support the locals in Kos and to enjoy these Greek delights.

3. Kos Boat Tour with Eva Boat

One of my kos tips that I rate in the top 3 things to do in Kos is a two-island boat excursion to nearby Greek islands. Depending on the Kos boat trip of your choice, you will most likely discover the shores of Kalymnos, Pserimos, and Plati. During the boat trip, there’s plenty of time to relax or snorkel in the crystal clear waters. A perfect way to enjoy the beautiful turquoise waters from the Aegean Sea . Most of the boats in the harbor offer a two or three-island boat tour. Prices, as well as the number of people allowed on a boat, vary per tour operator.

I’ve visited Kos multiple times and one of my best Kos travel tips is to book your boat tour with Eva Boat in the port of Kos . I absolutely love their hospitality. It’s the smallest and most cozy boat in the harbor of Kos Town, which means there will be fewer people on the boat. Apart from that, Eva Boat has the option of sailing on the waters around Kos (depending on the wind) and they serve a delicious rich BBQ and fresh fruits. Tour starts at 10.00 and ends at 17.30.

Delicious Barbecue in a secret bay of Kalymnos

Eva Boat offers an amazing Greek BBQ in a secret bay of Kalymnos Island with a small private (pebble stone) beach and crystal clear turquoise waters with no other boats or tourists. I love this stop because it’s away from the crowds. While the captain is preparing the barbecue, you will have the possibility to snorkel or relax on a secret beach in Kalymnos .

Once the captain is finished preparing the food, you will have lunch on the boat. Expect a great variety of meat, seafood, fresh vegetables, lettuce, and delicious fruits including wine. They ask for a small fee for beer and soft drinks. There’s enough for everybody.

Did you know that Kalymnos is famous, all over the world, for its natural sea-sponge harvest? Sponge diving is a common occupation on Kalymnos. It’s the main source of income. I love these sponges. It’s also a great souvenir to take back home. Kalymnos is also very popular among scuba divers.

The island offers unique diving experiences like underwater caves, reefs, but also cape slopes, and shipwrecks. For a real scuba diving experience, it’s best to stay in Kalymnos for a few nights. Optionally you can take some lessons at one of the two diving centers in Kalymnos. Kalymnos is also a great place for climbers. The island offers a rugged mountain landscape that attracts climbers from all over the world.

Relax on the white sandy remote beach of Pserimos

The small fisher village of Pserimos is only a short boat ride from Kos Island and Kalymnos Island. This remote island has a small number of inhabitants and heavily relies on tourism. It offers crystal clear waters, unharmed landscapes, and a peaceful laid back atmosphere. There are a few ruins on the island, shipwrecks, and taverns, all located around the harbor.

There’s not much to do on Pserimos Island, but I love the laid-back atmosphere. There are a few restaurants and taverns on the beach where you can have a cold beer or a milkshake. On the Island, you have time to relax for a bit. After boarding the boat you will be treated with fresh fruits, like melon, oranges, grapes.

Plati and its iconic Greek chapel

Plati is a tiny island with no inhabitants, located between Kalymnos and Kos Island. The island has an iconic Greek chapel and is supposed to have the cleanest water in the Dodecanese. Because of Kos’ strong winds, it sometimes isn’t possible to get into the bay of Pserimos. If the winds are too strong, they usually switch to Plati.

Spot wild dolphins in Kos

Can you spot dolphins on Kos Island? If you’re lucky,  you will spot dolphins jumping out of the water or swimming right next to the boat; a great experience. On your way back to Kos Island, the boat usually approaches nearby fish farms on the water that attract wild dolphins because of the smell of fish. Therefore, there’s a fair chance of seeing dolphins on your Kos boat trip .

To do Kos: full-day boat cruise from Kos Harbor

All of the boat trips in Kos are full-day cruises that depart from the main port in Kos Town. The time of departure is usually around 10.00-11.00 o’clock in the morning and you will return around 17.00-18.00 o’clock.

4. Sunset in Zia is a must see in Kos

Mount Zia is known as the best place to watch the sunset in Kos .   For that same reason, it’s also one of the major tourist attractions and most visited places in Kos, Greece. Zia is to Kos what Oia is to Santorini : the famous spot where people gather for a spectacular sundowner . The mountain village of Zia has several traditional tavernas with great views over Kos Island and its coastline. Try to look for the islands of Pserimos and Kalymnos or the Turkish coast.

You can also find narrow roads with small souvenir shops selling local products and crafts. It’s nice to have a short walk through the village and climb up to the church from where you will have great views as well. The panorama sunset view in Zia is simply magnificent and therefore a must see in Kos .

Although Zia is a bit crowded one of the most famous Kos instagram spots , there’s a relaxing atmosphere with great views and therefore one of the best things to do if you travel to Kos Greece ! My best Zia travel tip is to arrive in time to secure a parking spot and even more importantly, a good spot in one of the restaurants in Zia to watch the sunset. You can also ask the hotel reception or your host to make a reservation in advance.

How to get to Zia?

The best way to get to Zia is by car, taxi or to book an arranged sunset trip to Zia . Local travel agents often arrange the transport to Zia, including dinner with a view and your return trip. During the day, the cheapest way to get to Zia is by bus, but these local busses won’t drive in the evening. The easiest option is to hire a car and drive by yourself. This is also my personal favorite way to visit Zia.

5. Sightseeing Kos: Hire a car to explore Kos attractions

One of the best things to do in Kos is to hire a car to drive around Kos Island. For the best sunset viewing in Kos, plan to end one of your days exploring Kos attractions in Zia.

Is it possible to drive around Kos in a day?  Yes, you can cover most of the Island in a day, but I would suggest renting a car for a minimum of two-three days, so you have more time to really explore the different places of Kos Island.

6. Therma hot springs in Agios Fokas

About 12 kilometers from Kos Town, you can find the naturally heated sea-pool springs of Embros Therme in Agios Fokas . These healing hot springs in Kos have a temperature of 30 to 60 degrees Celsius (140 F). Take a healthy bath in this hot spring and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The scenery is characterized by a wild beauty of deep gulches, rocks, and black pebbles. This natural spa of Embros is even considered to have healing features because the water is rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, and sodium.

The disadvantage of this Kos attraction is that it can be quite touristic and crowded during the day. Apart from that, you have to love the smell of gas emissions, because of the volcanic activity. Nevertheless, it’s one of the most healthy and sustainable activities to do in Kos .

How to get to the Embros Therme in Kos?

The Therma is located in Agios Fokas. The best way to get to Therma Beach is by car. It’s not possible to drive all the way to the hot springs, so you need to park your car in the parking area along the road and walk down for about 10 minutes. Next to this car park, there’s also a bus stop. You can take the local bus 5 from the port in town up to Agios Fokas for 2 euros if you buy your ticket onboard the bus.

To reach the Thermae, you’ll face a bit of a steep walk that leads you to the small Therma Beach. At this beach, you will find a small café. There’s another café located at the top, near the parking place. During the day they offer donkey rides up and down the Therma but this is something I don’t recommend at all! Just be sportive and have a walk, instead of riding on these animals.

What is the best time to visit Therma Hot Springs in Kos?

If you travel to Kos in the early spring months or at the end of the seasons (October) the Therma is already less crowded. Off-season there’s a high chance of having the Therma to yourself, or you will share a healing bath with a few locals. Overall, the best time to visit Embros Therma is in the early morning or in the evening. Visiting Embros Therme in Kos is free of charge , and accessible the whole day (and night).

7. Hammam & Spa Tigaki Kos

Like a Turkish bath, a hammam is a steam bath that revitalizes the body and mind. This spa tradition has its origins in ancient Greek and Roman times. A traditional hammam experience often involves a wet steam bath (sauna) and your body will be rinsed, exfoliated (scrubbed to remove dead skin), and massaged with foam. This process will detox your body, clear your skin, soften your muscles, and strengthen your immune system. It’s a very peaceful and relaxing experience! It’s also possible to book an extra massage, a facial treatment, or just take your time sunbathing.

The Island of Kos has only one traditional Hamam: Artemis Hamam and Spa . It was established in 2012 and is located in Tigaki, around 10 km from Kos Town. They offer a shuttle service and it’s easily accessible by car or bus. So, if you really want to relax, this is one of the Kos things to do.

8 Archaeological ruins of Kos Island

Kos is a Greek island with a rich history and plenty of ancient Greek archaeological sites and monuments to visit. Asklepion  is the most popular archaeological site. It’s known as the center of Hippocrates’ Medical School, an ancient Greek physician, regarded as the father of medicine. It’s close to Platani in the South of Kos Town and one of the best things to do in Kos Old Town if you want to explore the Island’s long history.

Other popular archaeological sites in Kos are the ruins of Palio Pyli (Old Pyli), the ancient Agora , which is the largest archaeological site in Kos Town, Hippocrates Tree , the  Castle of the Knights of Saint John, the Roman Odeon (theater), and the Venetian Castle of Antimachia.

You will find many historical highlights, spread over the entire island. Exploring all these archaeological sites is a must-do when you visit Kos because it is part of ancient Greek history.

9. Kos nightlife on Bar Street

One of the things Kos is famous for is its bustling nightlife! Because of the lively Kos nightlife , the island of Kos is one of the most visited islands of the entire Dodecanese group. Personally, I don’t think Kos is a party island, but if you’re a party animal, the nightlife in Kos can certainly be one of the reasons to visit Kos with Bar Street as one of the main hotspots in Kos.

Kardamena’s Nightlife

Kardamena  is one of the best places to stay if you travel to Kos for its nightlife. The small fisherman village of Kardamena is located on the Eastern coast and offers several popular bars like the Neon Bar, Crossroads Bar, Jam Bar, and Bar 1960.

Bar Street Kos Town

The nightlife in Kos Town is based around two famous streets located in the heart of the town. They are called Diakon and Nafklirou. This lively area is full of bars and clubs where you can party all night long. During the day these streets are very calm, but at night it gets very busy. This area is also referred to as Bar Street in Kos Town . If partying and dancing is the reason for your visit, one of the best things to do is going out in Kos Bar Street. Tigaki is another popular place to find Kos clubs. Agios Stefanos, Psalidi, and Lambi also offer a few amusing bars.

10. Kos Island Waterparks

If you’re on a family holiday in Kos with kids, you might want to consider one of the two waterparks in Kos : Lido Waterpark in Mastichari and Aquatica Waterpark in Kardamena. Both waterparks offer unique aquatic entertainment with various attractions like pools, a river for tubing, and slides. Both parks are easily accessible by bus or car. Pack your sunscreen and swimsuit and enjoy a fun day out full of water activities; one of the most fun things to do in Kos with family and kids or as friends who love waterslides!

11. Ferry Kos to Bodrum (Turkey)

If you want to collect another passport stamp while on holiday in Kos, one of the best things to do is to book a 50-minute ferry ride to Bodrum in Turkey from the harbor of Kos Town . Discover Bodrum and the castle of the ancient city of Halicarnassus, which is the birthplace of the father of history: Herodotus. Stroll through the Turkish Bazaars, enjoy the local kitchen, and drink a Turkish coffee or tea.

12. Flamingos in the Alyki wetlands Kos

If you travel to Kos Greece between October and March, one of the best things to do is spot flamingos in the protected area of the Aliki (Salt Lake) near Tigaki. I always love to watch these pink-feathered birds; they are great models for my wildlife photography . Apart from watching flamingos, it’s also the  most popular spot for bird watching in Kos , so don’t forget your binoculars. You can also spot Pelicans. The Aliki wetlands used to be a salt flat where they produced cooking salt. Nowadays it's a beautiful piece of nature and one of the top tourist attractions in Kos .

13. Sightseeing Kos: Explore Kos by Bike

Did you know that this Greek Island of the Dodecanese is a great place to get around by bike? Kos is also called a cycling island! Many locals use their bicycles to get to work and the Greek island offers many bike rental stores for tourists to go sightseeing in Kos. One of the best travel tips is to hire a bike to explore the stunning Greek island of Kos ; a sporty and healthy activity.

Kos Island in Greece offers a beautiful 13km-long bicycle road along the coast of Kos from Psalidi to Faros Beach . I also love the Kos Island cycling route from Kos Town through Tigaki to the beaches of Marmari. I once cycled this route on one of the hottest summer days, but it’s an amazing coastal route. If you’re getting too hot; just have a quick dip in the sea. The more advanced bikers will love the steep hills and biking through the mountains in Kos. Exploring Kos by bike is definitely one of the best things to do!

14. Windsurfing in Kos or learn to kitesurf

Due to the winds in the summer months, Kos is a windsurfer’s paradise and a popular sport on several beaches of this beautiful Greek Island of the Dodecanese. The most popular spots for windsurfers in Kos are Lambi, Psalidi, Mastihari, Kefalos, and Agios Stefanos. In these places, you can find windsurfing centers where you can hire equipment. Kitesurfing is another popular activity in Kos ; there are a few spots where you can learn how to kitesurf; one of the best things to do if you like a bit of (water) adventure.

Kos Town is the most popular place to stay

Kos Town ,   including the very near Lambi and Psalidi, are by far the most popular place to stay in Kos , especially for first-time visitors. With a nice promenade, bustling nightlife on Bar Street, lovely Greek restaurants, archeological ruins, and a cozy port with small fishing boats, you can't go wrong if you choose to stay in Kos Town. You can find a good selection of accommodation in Kos city, from beach hotels to Airbnb's and apartments.

Kos Town is also easily accessible and it’s the base for public transport to other beautiful places to visit in Kos, or to go on boat trips to other Greek islands near Kos Island.

The best beach destination on Kos Island

For the best beach experiences on Kos Island , you might want to choose a beach hotel in Kefalos, Tigaki, or Marmari. These places offer huge beaches, with some of the best all-inclusive resorts on Kos, Greece.

People wit children often choose Tigaki, Marmari, and Mastichari for their family holiday in Kos . These areas offer a lot of activities like horse riding, beach sports, and a karting track. Older couples may find Kos Town a bit too busy and choose to stay in Kefalos instead. However, the hills in this area can be a bit challenging for some.

No matter which of these best places to visit in Kos you choose, you will have a wonderful time!

Where I stay in Kos

Now, where to stay in Kos? When I travel to Kos, I love to stay around Kos Town (including Lambi and Psalidi Kos). The main reason why I like to stay near Kos Town is because these places are very centrally located. I’m not a fan of eating in a hotel, therefore I rather stay close (or within biking distance) to several local Kos restaurants .

I’ve visited Kos Greece many times, and I stayed for example in the family-owned and cozy Denise Apartments in Psalidi (book through Corendon or Olympic), in Astron Suites & Apartments at the port in Kos Town, and in a nice AirBnB where we got treated with freshly baked cake and a Greek BBQ. I’ve also stayed with friends whom I met on my first Kos Island visit.

Is Kos Island Greece safe?

I always felt safe in Kos and I find it a safe Greek Island to visit for singles, friends, and families with children. So don't worry about safety in Kos . It's perfectly safe to wander the streets at night, which is not an unusual thing to do in Kos. Public transport on Kos Greece is also safe to use and the cheapest way to explore the island.

Which part of the island to choose?

• NORTH : Long flat coastline with sandy beach and resort areas amongst farmland and wetlands.
• SOUTH : Long sandy beaches nestled behind big mountains, wilder feeling than the north.
• EAST : Kos Town is in the centre of the short east coast with pebble/coarse sand beaches either side.
• WEST : West of Kefalos is a rugged and beautiful peninsula with the quietest beaches.

Kos – A Quick Overview

The island’s capital is called Kos Town (or Kos City, as you might see on buses) and this is the main hub for public transport. The airport is at the other end of the island, south of Mastichari. There is a mountainous ridge on the south east coast of the island, but the rest of the island is flat (except the dramatic scenery of the south west tip) – making it popular with cyclists. Kos is surprisingly green and lush too, thanks to the mineral-rich volcanic soil and abundance of water sources.

The main beach resorts – Tigaki, Marmari, and Mastichari – sit along the  excellent sandy beaches of the north coast. There’s another cluster of resorts on the south coast between Kefalos and Kardamena. The north coast can get blasted with fierce northerly winds (the meltemi ) every few days during the summer, which makes it an excellent spot for windsurfers and kitesurfers, but can be pretty unpleasant for the sunbathers. Wind shelters on the beaches are a common sight, but best to travel over to the more sheltered beaches on the south. This works in reverse at the start and end of the season when strong winds from the south are possible.

Kos threw in its towel with package tourism early on. As such, it has a well-established tourist infrastructure and you’ll find no shortage of resorts, amenities and entertainment. However, it fell out of favour with the major tour operators and subsequently is not as lively as it once was, and the lack of investment is apparent in some areas. But it also has one of the best selections of resort hotels (including all-inclusives) in Greece thanks to its endless beaches and flat landscape which is well suited to this type of development. If you’re looking for a beach break on the quieter side then it can represent excellent value. TUI has a large presence on the island. The selection of villas on the island is surprisingly small, especially at the top end – if you want an infinity pool you’ll have to book in to one of the luxury hotels.

Getting Around

Airport: Kos Airport (KGS) is located towards the west of the island, south of Mastichari. There are frequent buses to Kos Town and in high season to the main resorts.

Ferry: The main ferry port is Kos Town however ferries to Pserimos and Kalymnos also run from Mastichari, and in peak summer a route from Kardamena to Nisyros.

Bus: Island routes are run by KTEL Kos and fan out from Kos Town to the airport and the main resorts. Timetables are regularly updated and flyered at the bus stops. Payment is made on the bus. The main bus station is behind the pedestrianised Old Town area in town.

There are also local town bus routes that travel south east coast towards Therma and also up to Asklepion – these leave from the bus station next to the Gelsomino Albergo hotel and you buy tickets at the booth.  

Kos Town is a large and busy town with generous dose of history and good amenities. Although it’s not generally considered one of the most beautiful towns in Greece , Kos has a pleasant harbour area with Neratzia Castle and the striking Italian monuments to one side, a Old Town area nestled in its backstreets, and a surprising number of archaeological sites. Towering palm trees and numerous beaches add to its appeal, as does the excellent cycle path which runs through the town and connects to beaches at either end. It’s a great base if you don’t need to be on the beach all day.

The main tourist drag is to the north of the harbour where you’ll find sports bars and cocktails, shisha, fish tavernas, fish spas, gyms, and a lively strip of course sand beach crammed with sunloungers and daybeds. It feels a bit past its heyday but represents good value and a lively atmosphere.

South of the harbour the atmosphere is completely different – a pleasant tree-lined promenade runs as far as the yacht marina. The streets are leafy and residential, and most of the island’s many hospitals are tucked away in the backstreets.

For a splash of luxury check in to the smart boutique Albergo Gelsomino along the waterfront. This historic Italian building dates back to 1927 and has been restored and decorated in sleek monochrome. The lounge opens out onto a small sandy beach. Next door is the modern Kos Akti Art Hotel which has lower rates but no beach.

If charming family guesthouses are more your style, then check in to Afendoulis Hotel in the southern district for warm hospitality and generous homemade breakfasts in a shady flower-filled garden.

Rather be away from the hustle and bustle? At the back of the town is the established 4-star Diamond Boutique Hotel which is set in lush landscaped gardens and has a pool.

Lambi is the beach area to the north of Kos Town, it’s essentially a continuation of the town beach and is generally quieter and more pebbly. The main road (and cycle path) runs parallel to the beach. In the summer months it’s a popular spot for beach bars and clubs. The northern end is dominated by the large and lively beachfront 4-star Atlantis Hotel .

The crowds drop away where the coast curves around to the north and towards Tigaki. Here you’ll find a handful of upmarket resort hotels – most of them adults-only – each with access to a bit of beach. The beach here is narrow but more private than the east side of Lambi. The sand is slightly gritty rather than pebbly and most hotels have day beds available.

It’s a good area for active couples with the cycle path into town in one direction, and a long coastal promenade in the other towards Tigaki – perfect for an evening runs and bike rides. The hotels here have plenty of space.

The nearest to town are the 5-star Aqua Blu Boutique Hotel and  Lango Design Hotel & Spa , both hard to beat for facilities and design. Further down the promenade you will find the family-friendly TUI Atlantica Thalassa and TUI Blue Lagoon Resort , and the adults-only White Pearls Luxury Suites and Diamond Deluxe .

Bear in mind that all of the hotels here are behind the coastal road road rather than directly on the beach but the distance is minimal. 

Take the cycle path south of Kos Town past the yacht marina and you’ll reach the Psalidi area, home to a long stretch of pebble beach that’s popular with watersports fans. It’s generally a quiet area that’s home to several large resort hotels and is also well equipped with watersports shops, dive centres and various types of rentals – particularly in the northern corner near the wetlands.

At the town end, the beach is narrow with small pebbles and course sand. There are a few budget beach cafes and tavernas around here. Where the beach swerves at an angle it is referred to as Psalidi Ramira thanks to the the large all-inclusive resort located here – the 5-star Mitsis Ramira Beach Hotel . The beach here is wide with medium-sized pebbles.

The beach continues down the length of the east coast with several spacious and well-equipped 5-star resorts at intervals – the Natura Park Village Hotel & Spa , and through TUI the Grecotel Kos Imperial Thalasso and  Oceanis Beach Resort & Spa . These all have direct beach access.

Agios Fokas

Agios Fokas is located where Psalidi turns an abrupt corner and becomes the south coast. There’s not really a village here, but it’s the location of a popular beach bar plus two large and polished all-inclusive hotels – the Michaelangelo Resort & Spa and Dimitra Hotel & Suites . Both are white-washed and manicured, with pleasant landscaping and steps leading down to the dark grey pebble beach which has a distinctly volcanic feel and fabulous views across to Turkey on the horizon.

The town bus runs regularly along the coast to Agios Fokas and occasionally continues on to Therma, popular volcanic springs 2km to the west.

Tigaki is the first major resort along the north coast. The beach is wide and boasts powder-soft sand with a pale and powdery colour. There’s plenty of room for everyone and there are unorganised sections at either end of the beach. In the middle, you’ll find all sorts of facilities – watersports, lifeguards, day beds, loungers with cafe service, lockers, and even charging stations. If you’re the kind of person who links to plonk yourself down on the beach and not move for a week then Tigaki is perfect.

The main strip extends back from the beach, rather than running alongside it. It’s not a party town but there are plenty of cafes, bar and restaurants – both Greek and international – as well as the usual assortment of souvenir shops, inflatables, rental shops, and tour agencies offering excursions. It’s a feel-good place with friendly vibes. The downside is the occasional fierce winds.

It’s possible to cycle between Tigaki and Kos Town although it’s a too far to regularly pop into town. Bicycle rental is cheap and readily available, and it’s easy to find your own bit of beach if you have a bike. The area around Tigaki and Marmari is sleepy with pastoral scenes (many cows), roadside vegetable-sellers, and wetlands fauna. If cycling is not for you then don’t worry, regular buses and the tourist train also connect Tigaki with Kos Town. 

There is a wide selection of good value locally-run hotels. Our top pick is the 4-star More Meni Residences & Suites with its chic neutral styling and central location. Tying for second are the fresh and modern 3-stars Utopia Blu and Oneiro .

If you prefer a larger resort, the Astir Odysseus Resort & Spa is a short distance from Tigaki but has direct access to a quiet beach and plenty of facilities for children.

4km along the coast from Tigaki, Marmari boasts a similar beach (if anything, the sand is slightly better here) but a smaller and quieter resort. The beach is backed by dunes and tamarisk trees, with a few tavernas along the main road and then one strip of hotels, cafes, and shops. This is the place for couples and families looking for beach bliss. There are many quality resort hotels right on the beach here.

Between Tigaki and Marmari is an area of salt flats with a lake and an abundance of wildlife including flamingos and butterflies. 

For adults, the Instagram-friendly OKU Kos ( formerly a Casa Cook hotel ) is a highlight. The decor is stylish boho and the vibe is surpremely chilled. You’ll find yoga and SUP on the activities menu alongside the spa treatment. Next door is the similarly upmarket adults-only D’Andrea Lagoon . It’s a long walk to the main part of Marmari though so best suited to those happy to stay put for a week. In fact, if you’re looking for peace and quiet then the stretches either side of Marmari are a good bet.

For adults-only closer to the strip look at Sandy Beach Hotel and Sunprime Pearl Beach .

Closer to the main strip but still near the beach are the family-friendly TUI Atlantica Marmari Beach , Grecotel Casa Paradiso , and  Holiday Village Atlantica Kos . For beachfront access try the Caravia Beach Hotel . 

Marmari even has a posh glamping option – the Sails on Kos Ecolux Tented Village which has safari tents and bell tents.

Completing the trio of major resorts on the north coast is the likeable Mastichari . This is one of the best places in the Med for windsurfing and kitesurfing and has a bit of a boho vibe (as well as more independent accommodation vs packaged) compared to the other resorts. 

The main beach is west-facing, wide and sandy, backed by dunes and large tamarisk trees providing pleasant shade. As well as windsurfing and kitesurfing, SUP and kayaks are available as well as playground, basketball court, and beach volleyball. When the wind isn’t blowing the beach a true delight. The sea is shallow for a long way out so ideal for small children.

There is another small beach in front of the north-facing Mastichari Bay Hotel and on the other side there are a few large resort hotels at the south end of the beach and continuing along the road. Ferries run from Mastichari to Kalymnos and Pserimos . 

Mastichari feels the most up-to-date of the Koan beach towns. The beach cafes have a relaxed and modern vibe – think hammocks and rattan – and there is a good variety of eateries. There are a few late bars for evening sessions. The downside is the wind (as ever) and also the prevalence of sea grass late in the season.

To be close to the beach stay in one of the many traditional studios or apartments like the popular Irene Studios .

There are few large resort hotels in Mastichari itself. But drive east for 10-minutes to Tam Tam Beach and you’ll find a cluster – including the TUI MAGIC LIFE Marmari Palace (right next to the Lido Water Park), the Gaia Royal , Smy Princess of Kos , and the Neptune Resort and Spa . A similar distance to the south of Mastichari is the Eurovillage Achilleas Hotel .

Although it’s not as busy as it once was, Kardamena (also spelt Kardamaina ) is still the liveliest beach resort outside Kos Town. Buses into Kos are less frequent than from Tigaki or Mastichari so you’re more likely to spend your evenings here. The town has a tangle of narrow streets filled with shops, bars, and the occasional nightclub. At the waterfront is a palm-lined harbour and you can find a variety of boat trips on offer.

On either side of the resort is a long strip of shoreline, with an increasing number of all-inclusive resorts perched right behind. There are frequent local shuttle buses into town to connect those further out. The resort itself is flat but the area behind is hilly – it’s possible to hike up to Antimachia Castle along a new paved path. 

The main town beach is just next to the harbour. The beach is the widest and sandiest beach and is lined with loungers and cafes. On either side of town the coast gets a little narrow and scrappy with some pebbles. Sand-wise, it’s not on a par with the north coast however it is more sheltered from the wind.

To the north you’ll find the Mitsis Blue Domes Resort & Spa which is the town’s premier hotel offering. Private bungalows with hot tubs and suites with pools are amongst the available options. It’s part of a complex which includes several 4 and 5-star hotels. The Mitsis Summer Palace Beach Hotel has quite spectacular design including infinity pools. The sand on the beach verges towards coarse and pebbly. 

If you’re after a package, TUI will take you to the Akti Palace and Akti Beach Club . 

Best option in the town is the  highly-rated Kyma Rooms & Suites with clean and modern waterfront rooms.

The beach and resort hotels also continue south of Kardamena for a few miles until the cape at Helona where the landscape gets wilder.

Kefalos is both a wider bay which incorporates a number of small beaches and resorts, as well as a village which is further up the hillside.

At the far end of Kefalos you’ll find Kamari Beach , a small beach next to a fishing harbour and a road that’s lined with cafes. There’s not an abundance of accommodation here but there are a few apartments such as Dionysia Studios .

As the beach widens it becomes Kampos . The road does not run directly alongside but rather behind. There are a few large hotels, restaurants and cafes right on the beach, which is a mix of small colourful pebbles and course sand. This part of Kos is popular with returners and expats looking for a quiet time on the beach, with plenty of space to stretch out. For simple whitewashed rooms have a look at Katherina’s Studios. There are larger hotels towards the north end of Kampos – such as Zeus Hotel – although they do feel a bit dated compared to other resorts on the island. It’s a modest area and you can bag some bargains.

The chic adults-only White Rock of Kos is up on the hills behind Kefalos. 

At the northern end of the bay is postcard-perfect Agios Stefanos , where you’ll find the remains of an ancient basilica right next to two sandy beaches. Strong swimmers can make a trip to the small island of Kastri with its picturesque lone church.

The Ikos Aria resort occupies the whole area behind Agios Stefanos beach and is one of the most appealing luxury resorts on the island – it’s a truly beautiful setting.

This area is also perfect for those happy to rent their own vehicle and explore beaches further afield. To the east of Kefalos Bay is the expansive Golden Beach (or Chryssi Akti ), a long stretch of beach with very soft ash-like sand and backed by scenic cliffs. You’ll often see sections of beach given their own name, usually after a nearby taverna or bar with parking (such as Paradise Beach, Magic Beach, Markos Beach). The former has a popular beach bar playing chilled out beats. It gets quieter and wilder the further east you go.

 The only hotel here is the secluded TUI Blue Lagoon Village .

On the wild and steep headland west of Kefalos there are are a number of quiet beaches worth seeking out such as Cavo Paradiso and Limnionas. Quad and buggy rental is common down this end of Kos.

Kos Town : Kos Town is the capital and the main port of the island. It is built on the north eastern side of Kos, around a vast area full of greenery and lush vegetation. The first inhabitants arrived in Ks during the prehistoric years and remains of that time lie around the port while constitute a major attraction of the island nowadays.

Kos Town combines various architectural styles from the ancient, medieval and modern years. Venetian buildings and well-preserved houses stand amidst shady plantation and lush green areas whereas the wide alleys create a relaxing and charming atmosphere in the town. A walk in the historic streets of the town reveals some of the most beautiful creations of ancient civilizations and the way of life during those years.

Some of the most important sightseeings of Kos Town is the imposing Castle of the Knights of Saint John which stands on the eastern side of the harbour and is connected to the rest of the town by a bridge that crosses the famous Palm Tree Avenue. Its strong fortified walls were used to protect the inhabitants of Kos from the constant piratic invasions. It is worth mentioning that despite the modern infrastructure of Kos Town, the significant sightseeings of Kos are a clear reflection of the long history of the island.

Along the main pedestrian plenty of cafes, taverns, restaurants and shops can be found as well as a plethora of clubs and nightclubs, which transform the town into a hot spot during the night.

Housed in a 1927 Italian building that stands out as one of Kos’ most iconic landmarks, the Albergo Gelsomino is a luxury 5-star hotel with elegantly-decorated suites and stunning sea views. It also boasts a multi-awarded restaurant that can satisfy even the most demanding palates.

Worthless place. That the grass hasn't been cut, I guess. But all the signs with information are gone. That makes it an uninteresting pile of stones that you can only make something out of with a lot of imagination (or a lot of knowledge). Poorly maintained place, must be lack of European money

• David crook 29 Oct 2023 Stumbled upon the castle when visiting Kos Town I love a castle and a bit of history. Stumbled upon the castle when visiting Kos Town and had no admission fee to pay (possibly end of season). Sadly the museum wasn’t open but never the less the castle itself was lovely to had a look around. No safety barriers but aslong as you’re mindful of this, it doesn’t cause any problems (we had two children 5 and 8 with us!) Definitely worth a look around to pass 30 mins
• Phil Harris 28 Oct 2023 Fascinating I visited the site as a tourist in October, 2023. Fascinating to hear the shock therapy they used to basically scare the wits out of patients to have a different outlook on life. Locking them in a dark chamber for the night and then pitching hundreds of snakes in through an access in the roof. I think I'd be grateful to see the light of day in the morning as well if I'd been in there with many others. Then on another level a priest would visit patients calling them by name while they hallucinated on poppy seeds that were burned in another closed chamber. Convinced the following morning they had been visited by a god. A very pleasant site with plenty of parking and a cafe and toilets on site.
• matthew.buick 19 Sep 2012 Kos Castle This is a lovely old castle, with a very reasonable entrance fee, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be very careful when crossing the walkway bridge to get into the castle. It is very rickety, and the fences MUST NOT be leaned upon. Also, there are no safety fences anywhere in the castle itself, so please be very very careful near the castle walls, or any other edges.
• Roger_Hill 21 Nov 2007 Kos Town is a good all round resort Always take my main holiday in Greece. I chose Kos Town as I had visited on a day trip from Kardamena many years ago and it seemed a good resort. Additionally, research on the internet indicated that it would be the type of resort I like, lively with a choice of nightlife and beaches. Kos Town is a good all round resort. There are various historical sites to see. There are several beaches to choose from, which although not the greatest, are sandy and provide all you could need (Tigaki beach , also Angelika beach on main Kos Town). The nightlife is good with a mixture of lively music cars/clubs in Bar Street but also a good choice of quieter, more relaxing bars for those that prefer that (Four Roses, Kos Town - very friendly service). There is also a good local bus service linking Kos Town to the neighbouring Lambi and Psalidi and also buses further afield. I only went to Tigaki approximately 15 minutes) where there is a wonderful sandy beach and lovely child friendly shallow waters. Good choice of restaurants serving Greek and international food. Stadium (near the Marina) was very high standard and Sunrise (near the tourist office) was also very good. Service in all restaurants was good. Food in the beach bars was also of a high standard Grabanna/Tarzan are examples). Don't go all-inclusive as you miss out on discovering the area. With all inclusives you deprive the local businesses of much needed trade.
