Oliver Glasner now set to include six Crystal Palace academy stars in squad for USA tour

Oliver Glasner is now set to name six Crystal Palace youngsters in his squad for the pre-season tour of the United States.

The Eagles are set to depart south London for Annapolis, Maryland in the coming days to take on fellow Premier League side Wolves – before a clash against West Ham in Tampa, Florida follows.

So, which Crystal Palace prospects have impressed Oliver Glasner ? Let’s take a look…

Six Crystal Palace youngsters set to take part in USA tour

A story from the South London Press now states that the Austrian will take six talented young prospects on Crystal Palace’s pre-season tour, including Franco Umeh , a name who has been on the lips of many fans recently.

The Republic of Ireland international U19 international is expected to compete against Tyrick Mitchell for the left-wing back role this season.

It was even said that Glasner decided against signing Ryan Sessegnon on a free transfer as he believes Umeh is capable of challenging the England international at Selhurst Park – according to Alan Nixon .

The South London Press believe Caleb Kporha, Asher Agbinone, Justin Devenny, Roshaun Mathurin and Mofe Jemide are all set to join the 19-year-old in travelling to the United States with the senior players.

Refreshing approach from Oliver Glasner

For the first time in a while, it genuinely feels like some of our academy prospects have a chance of breaking into the first-team.

Roy Hodgson never showed much desire to blood the youngsters unless he absolutely had to – instead opting for the more experienced options – even sticking with the same senior crop in dead rubber, end of season affairs, much to the annoyance of supporters.

However, Glasner seems like he is giving every player – young or old – a chance to impress this summer and make a name for themselves, which is fantastic to see.

Hopefully, one of these six prospects can put their name up in lights whilst out in the United States, and follow the likes of Mitchell, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Wilfried Zaha in breaking through.

Crystal Palace have announced they will travel to the United States for their 2024-25 pre-season tour.

The Eagles will be returning to the country for the second summer in a row to take part in the inaugural Stateside Cup trophy.

They will be playing fixtures against fellow Premier League sides West Ham United and Wolves.

Oliver Glasner's team will take on the Old Gold on 31 July at the 34,000-capacity Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.

They will then travel to Florida where they will face London rivals West Ham on 3 August at the 69,000-seater Raymond James Stadium.

Chairman Steve Parish said on the announcement: "After such a brilliant tour last year, we are delighted to be returning to the United States once again this summer.

"As a club, we are always hugely appreciative of the support that we receive over in the US, and we hope our growing fanbase will enjoy the chance to join us in Annapolis and Tampa for two exciting matches against Premier League opposition."

Crystal Palace squad for 2024/25: Oliver Glasner's full team for the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup

The Crystal Palace squad for 2024/25 finished last season extremely strongly - can they carry that on into this campaign?

One to watch

Most likely to..., least likely to..., view from the stands.

The Crystal Palace squad for 2024/25 enters with plenty of optimism, hope and reasons for belief.

The Eagles have never qualified for Europe before, but that doesn’t feel like an unrealistic ambition this season. Crystal Palace averaged 1.85 points per game under Oliver Glasner last term. Maintain that record over 38 matches and Palace fans can start packing their suitcases.

Needless to say, achieving that sort of months-long consistency won’t be easy.

Palace don’t have the same strength in depth as some of the teams they’re looking to hunt down, while Glasner will be sweating on the status of key players until Big Ben strikes 11 on transfer deadline day. Still, there’s no reason why Palace can’t set a new all-time best Premier League finish of ninth or above.

Indeed, of football matches lasted for 75 minutes rather than 90, Palace would have finished fourth last time out. The concession of 23 goals in the final quarter-of-an-hour of games ultimately cost Palace 20 points and denied everyone else the prospect of seeing a bemused Kylian Mbappe squeeze himself down Selhurst Park’s tight tunnel in the Champions League group stage (or whatever they’re calling it these days).

Fitness levels should improve further after a full pre-season under Glasner, who must also ensure his players remain switched on until the final whistle. If all that sounds like too much effort, Palace could just join Florentino Perez’s crusade to shorten game times.

When Bayern Munich try to poach the Crystal Palace manager, you know you must be doing something right. Oliver Glasner was a breath of fresh air last season and the ambitious Austrian will encourage his team to continue playing his proactive, dynamic brand of football.

Joint-player of the year in 2023/24, Joachim Andersen is ideally suited to his role at the heart of a three-man defence. An intelligent reader of the game, Andersen is also one of the league’s best long passers. His sweeping diagonals frequently set Palace on the attack.

Jean-Philippe Mateta

Not even Jean-Philippe Mateta could have seen last season’s transformation coming. The Frenchman scored 13 goals in as many games under Glasner, supplementing his handy hold-up play with a new-found ruthlessness inside the box.

Was it a purple patch, or can Palace’s latest cult hero establish himself as one of the best strikers outside the big six?

As optimistic as it’s been since promotion in 2013. Just a few months back fans were protesting “wasted potential on and off the pitch”, but now everyone is pulling in the same direction again. For that Palace have Oliver Glasner to thank. It just goes to show what a bit of ambition can do for a club.

Be given an EFL loyalty card. Palace have made the Championship their preferred shopping place under their shrewd sporting director Dougie Freedman. Ebere Eze, Marc Guehi, Michael Olise and Adam Wharton have all thrived at Selhurst Park after breaking through in the second tier. Enough for a discount next time, you’d hope.

See their stadium win an award for cutting-edge innovation. Palace are celebrating 100 years at Selhurst Park this season – cue jokes about how parts of the ground haven’t changed since.

A new Main Stand is in the works but Palace’s long-time home, situated in a stubbornly ungentrified part of the capital, retains its old-school vibe for now. No cheese rooms here.

Dan Cook ( @HLTCO )

Last season was a rollercoaster of famine followed by feast. The Hodgson era has grown stale again, but Glasner has us all believing once more.

The big talking point is whether or not we’ll keep hold of Olise and Eze heading into next season.

This season will be different because we have Oliver Glasner at the helm after a full pre-season. He made a huge difference in three months, hopefully that continues.

I won’t be happy unless I see us continue to play with three centre-backs. The tactical shift has been a revelation under the Austrian.

Our key player will be Adam Wharton. He’s been incredible since coming in from Blackburn. I’ve not seen anyone as composed in a Palace shirt at 20 in my life.

Our most underrated player is Daniel Munoz. He came in at the end of the January window and is already a cult hero to our fans. 100 per cent effort, 100 per cent of the time. Fans think our owner is solid and dependable, largely. Steve Parish has presided over the most successful 14 years in our history and things are pretty good right now.

The opposition player I'd love here is (realistically) Ademola Lookman. I’ve wanted him at Palace for years. A south London lad, I feel he’d be perfect for us.

The opposition player who grinds my gears is Lewis Dunk. Brighton captain, he hates us, we hate him. It’s reciprocal, it’s neat, everyone knows where they stand.

The active player I'd love to have back is, for pure nostalgia, still Wilfried Zaha. Am I a jilted lover? Yes, but I’ve made my peace with it.

The pantomime villain will be Neal Maupay. He thrives in the role, it’s what makes him tick. At this stage, I feel the character has actually overtaken football in his head.

The thing my club really gets right is community engagement. They still feel very much part of south London and do tremendous work for those who really need it.

The one change I'd make would be a freshening up of the facilities in the Arthur Wait Stand. I love my club dearly, but it’s much needed.

Our season ticket prices are perfectly reasonable in comparison to many in the Premier League.

I'm least looking forward to playing Brighton, as always – the club I look forward to playing most and also dread the most.

The fans' opinion of the gaffer is through-the-roof positivity. Glasner has completely transformed our fitness levels, playing style, belief and expectations in a matter of months.

We'll finish 8th.

Crystal Palace v West Ham United | All You Need To Know

Crystal Palace v West Ham United Premier League, Selhurst Park, Saturday 24 August 2024, 3pm BST

West Ham United return to Premier League action for a first away fixture of the 2024/25 campaign on Saturday against Crystal Palace.

Both West Ham and Palace were on the wrong end of 2-1 defeats in their respective opening-day clashes, with the Irons being defeated at home to Aston Villa, while the south Londoners were beaten away to Brentford.

Those results put the Hammers and the Eagles in the middle pack in the Premier League, and both will be eager to record their first win of the season at the second attempt.

Having met just three weeks ago in Tampa, Florida, in the Stateside Cup, West Ham and Crystal Palace will lock horns again, with early points up for grabs at Selhurst Park.

West Ham fans are advised that the Club’s allocation of 2,687 tickets have sold out.

The first 90 per cent of tickets sold out to Bondholders and Season Ticket Holders with 22+ Loyalty Points. The remaining ten per cent (268 tickets) were then sold by a ballot process, open to Season Ticket Holders who had yet to purchase for this fixture. The ballot closed at 12noon on Tuesday 30 July.

Tickets for this fixture will be issued as digital tickets. This replicates the same process when using your Season Card via your mobile device to access London Stadium for home matches.

Take public transport!

South London is a nightmare to drive around and parking in the vicinity of Selhurst Park is also extremely limited, so let the train take the strain.

The nearest stations are Selhurst, Thornton Heath or Norwood Junction, all of which are served by London Victoria services and are within ten-15 minutes’ walk of the ground. Both Thornton Heath and Norwood Junction are also served by trains from London Bridge.

London Overground services, which interchange with London Underground Jubilee line services at Canada Water and Elizabeth, District and Hammersmith and City line services at Whitechapel, also serve Norwood Junction.

How To Follow…

Saturday’s 3pm kick-off will NOT be broadcast live in the UK, but will be shown across the world by the Premier League’s international broadcast partners.

If you live outside the UK, click  HERE  for details of Premier League listings in your territory.

You can follow the action via our live blog on whufc.com and our app, and across our social media channels. We will also have highlights and exclusive reaction for you after the final whistle on our website and social media.

Live audio commentary will be available in the UK on BBC Radio London, and worldwide on our official website and app.

Joachim Andersen will unlikely be involved for Palace as he reportedly closes in on a move to Premier League rivals Fulham. Matheus Franca is believed to be the only fitness concern at this stage for Oliver Glasner’s side.

Julen Lopetegui's only potential absentee is likely to be Edson Álvarez, who suffered a hamstring injury at the Copa América which kept the midfielder out of pre-season and the season opener against Aston Villa, so the 26-year-old will be assessed ahead of the Hammers’ first away game of the 2024/25 campaign.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luis Guilherme are two potential debutants, while Jean-Clair Todibo, Crysencio Summerville and Niclas Füllkrug could be handed first starts in Claret and Blue, having come off the bench against Villa.

Opposition...

Crystal Palace were the Premier League’s most eye-catching and in-form side at the end of last season, scoring six wins while going unbeaten in their final seven games.

After Roy Hodgson departed the Palace dugout for the second time in February 2024, former VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt manager Oliver Glasner was tasked with turning things around in south London.

At that point, Palace were embroiled in a relegation battle after just three wins in 19 matches across all competitions, but the Austrian impressed with his management style and galvanised the Eagles’ survival bid, finishing tenth in the Premier League, one place behind West Ham.

After the way the previous campaign finished, there is understandably real hope and excitement about the new season, and despite a relatively quiet transfer window so far, it has barely dampened the mood at Selhurst Park.

The departure of French youth international Michael Olise to Bayern Munich would’ve hit hard, but an unbeaten pre-season showed some signs of promise, including a 3-1 win over West Ham. Olise is the only notable departure to date, however, and Palace are still in a strong position and have talent in abundance across all areas of the pitch, with the likes of Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi and Adam Wharton just a few of the names who are likely to have an instrumental part to play throughout the 2024/25 campaign.

Crystal Palace have brought in three players so far this summer – midfielder Daichi Kamada from Lazio, winger Ismaïla Sarr from French club Olympique de Marseille and Moroccan defender Chadi Riad from FC Barcelona, as the Eagles look towards a bright future under Glasner.

Previous Meetings…

West Ham and Crystal Palace have met 68 times in all competitions to date.

Prior to the meeting in the heat and humidity of Tampa, Florida, at the beginning of the month, the previous 22 meetings have come in the Premier League, ever since the Irons’ return to the top-flight via the Play-Offs in the 2011/12 season.

The Hammers boast a good run of form when visiting south London, having lost only four out of their last ten fixtures at Selhurst Park.

However, West Ham were humbled 5-2 there on the most-recent visit back in April this year.

The Hammers' record win over Crystal Palace came back in March 1923, when they were 5-1 victors on the road.

Match Officials…

Referee:  Rob Jones Assistant Referees:  Ian Hussin and Neil Davies Fourth Official:  Andy Davies VAR:  Paul Tierney Assistant VAR:  Wade Smith

Rob Jones has been confirmed as the referee for West Ham United’s first London derby of the fresh 2024/25 Premier League season.

A referee in the English Football League since 2016, the 37-year-old Merseysider took charge of his first top-flight clash in December 2019, and was promoted to Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) Select Group One ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Jones has been the man in the middle at three finals during his career so far, the last of which was Wycombe Wanderers’ victory over Oxford United in the EFL League One Play-Off final in July 2020, little under a year after he refereed Oxford’s shock win over West Ham in the third round of the EFL Cup.

In total, Jones has held the whistle at six games involving the Hammers, most recently last term’s dramatic 4-3 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United at St James’ Park, in March 2024.

He has already overseen three matches in 2024/25, following up clashes in UEFA Champions League and Europa League qualifying by refereeing Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Fulham on Friday 16 August in the first match of the new Premier League campaign.

Oliver Glasner 's Crystal Palace are set to play Ligue 1 side Nantes in a pre-season friendly at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

The home side finished 10th in the Premier League last term with 49 points from 38 games, while the visitors ended their 2023-24 season in 14th place with 33 points from 34 matches.

Match preview

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner waves to fans after the match on May 19, 2024

This is Crystal Palace's final friendly game before they play Brentford in their opening match of the 2024-25 Premier League season on August 18.

The hosts' 2023-24 campaign seemed precarious at one point, with the club fifth last in 16th place when previous boss Roy Hodgson stepped down from his position.

In fact, the Eagles had lost 10 of their last 16 Premier League games under Hodgson, and Glasner's appointment in February only heralded one win in his first seven Premier League fixtures.

However, the Austrian would go on to win six of his side's last seven top flight games, including a 1-0 away victory against Liverpool on April 14, a 4-0 home triumph against Manchester United on May 6 and a 5-0 success on the final day of the season against Aston Villa on May 19.

Glasner's high pressing and direct style of play helped to get the best out of forwards like Jean-Philippe Mateta , who scored 13 Premier League goals in the manager's first 14 games.

Palace have won their last three pre-season matches, including back to back 3-1 triumphs against Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 1 and against West Ham United on August 4.

Antoine Kombouare, coach of FC Nantes during his side's match against Montpellier on April 26, 2024 [on August 9, 2024]

Opponents Nantes finished 14th last term with a points per game record of 0.97, a figure which only slightly bettered 2022-23's return of 0.95 points per game.

The visitors scored 30 goals and conceded 55 times in 2023-24, and this made them the division's second-worst offensive and joint fourth-worst defensive side.

Manager Antoine Kombouare replaced Jocelyn Gourvennec in March, but Gourvennec himself replaced Pierre Aristouy in November.

Kombouare has an overall competitive record of two wins, two draws and four defeats, though his team have won three of their four pre-season friendlies.

Nantes failed to win any of their last three Ligue 1 away fixtures, though prior to those games they succeeded in four of the previous five.

France's Jean-Philippe Mateta in action against Spain at the Olympics on August 9, 2024

Unfortunately for Glasner, Mateta will be unavailable for selection due to his participation in the Olympics for France, though he could be available before their first Premier League game against Brentford.

Ismaila Sarr could make his first appearance for the club since signing from Marseille, and he could even be thrown straight into the starting lineup.

Cheick Doucoure is a doubt after he suffered a slight issue against Crawley Town on July 27, but Glasner is hopeful that it will not keep the midfielder out for too long.

As for the visitors, they will likely start Mostafa Mohamed in the forward line after the striker scored last time out on August 7 against Lorient.

Elsewhere, Nantes could start Malang Gomes in midfield, while Kelvin Amian could continue in defence.

Crystal Palace possible starting lineup: Henderson; Andersen, Richards, Riad; Clyne, Hughes, Wharton, Mitchell; Sarr, Ayew, Kamada

Nantes possible starting lineup: Mabon; Acapandie, Amian, Pallois, Duverne; Meupiyou, Gomes; Leroux, Assoumani, Guirassy; Mohamed

SM words green background

We say: Crystal Palace 2-1 Nantes

Crystal Palace's excellent form at the end of 2023-24 has continued into their pre-season matches, and it would be unsurprising if they managed to create numerous opportunities against Nantes on Sunday.

However, the Ligue 1 club have performed well in their pre-season fixtures so far, and could cause Palace some difficulties. For data analysis of the most likely results, scorelines and more for this match please click here .

Eze on Brentford defeat and disallowed goal

Ebere Eze says Crystal Palace’s opening weekend defeat at Brentford was ‘tough to take’, as he explained his discussions with the referee over his disallowed goal.

Eze discusses tough opener

“It’s tough to take, but I think the main thing is [putting in] good performances, and over the course of the season you're going to win more games,” he told the BBC.

“It’s difficult to take, but we'll move on.”

Eze caught the goalkeeper out in the first-half from free-kick, finding the back of the net from 30 yards, but the referee disallowed the goal for a push in the box - a decision VAR could not overturn because the whistle had already been blown.

“I was told that he blew too early, he said he made a mistake,” he explained.

“It's something that maybe could have changed the game, but we have to deal with it. We had so many more chances as well, so it's not like that was our only chance.

“But it was a good performance, I think if we put in performances like that we will do well so it’s something to build on.”

Ivan Toney has already issued a come-and-get-me plea to Liverpool as fresh questions rise over his future.

The England international was a shock exclusion from Brentford’s matchday squad for their opening Premier League game against Crystal Palace on Sunday. Toney has been strongly linked with a move away from the Bees for some time now, although recent speculation has been quieter after Arsenal seemingly cooled its interest.

Thomas Frank’s decision to leave his star striker out though suggests a transfer could be in the offing though. Liverpool has been linked in the past with Toney , and the 28-year-old has made no secret of the fact he is a fan of the Reds .

Indeed, Toney has actually talked up a move to Anfield in the past. Speaking to the On The Judy podcast for Total Media back in 2021 , Toney confirmed where his allegiances lie.

“Yeah I support Liverpool, I’m a Liverpool fan,” he said. “If they come knocking, who knows?”

Toney was then asked if he would prefer to move to Liverpool without a guarantee that he would play, or to a side where he would definitely get game time, Toney replied: “I’m going to have to go Liverpool, I’ll make myself the main man.”

Manchester United has been linked with Toney, although having spent big on Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui already this summer, Erik ten Hag’s side would likely have to offload some of its players first . A move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli has also been touted, which would see him link up with former Liverpool hero Roberto Firmino .

Thomas Frank has hinted Ivan Toney could leave Brentford before the end of the transfer window

Asked by Sky Sports about his decision to leave Toney out, Brentford boss Frank said: "A lot of things going on with Ivan [Toney], especially with transfers, there's a lot of transfer interest. Because of all that, we've decided not to include him in the squad.

"I can't give too much away the day before. Of course Ivan is a top player, we all know that. He has been fantastic for us for four years but we showed last season we can cope without him."

Asked whether Toney had played his final game for the club, Frank responded: "Who knows. There is interest, it's not close."

Liverpool.com says: There’s no doubting Toney’s quality, but would he be a good fit for Liverpool? At 28, you feel his best years may already be behind him now, and the chance to move to Anfield may have passed him by.

It’s certainly not a move we can see the Reds going for this summer. It will be interesting to see where he ends up though, if he does indeed make a move.
