Friday 09th Aug 2024

One of the most popular recording artists and respected entertainers in history, Billy Joel will be performing a one-off show at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Friday 9 August 2024, joined by special guest Chris Isaak. This incredibly special show will be Billy Joel’s first in Cardiff and his only European performance in 2024.

About the Tour

New York’s quintessential son is one of the greatest musicians of our time. Joel’s songs have acted as personal and cultural touchstones for millions of people across five decades. Joel’s string of 33 Top 40 hits, all of which Joel has written himself, began with 1973’s autobiographical ‘Piano Man’. Written while Joel was playing in a Los Angeles lounge. In 2016, the Library of Congress selected ‘Piano Man’ for preservation in the National Recording Registry for its ‘cultural, historic and artistic significance’. The hits have continued for almost five decades, with three of Joel’s Top 40 songs - ‘It’s Still Rock and Roll To Me’, ‘Tell Her About It’ and ‘We Didn’t Start The Fire’ - peaking at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts and 23 Grammy nominations awarded to Joel since he signed his first recording contract in 1972. Joel is one of the most engaging and best-selling live performers of our time, with songs like ‘Uptown Girl’, ‘Just The Way You Are’, ‘The Longest Time’ and ‘Vienna’ - amongst countless others. He began Madison Square Garden’s first-ever music franchise in January 2014 that continues to this day, performing one show at The Garden each month. Joel's record-breaking residency will end in July 2024, a little more than 10 years after it first began, marking Joel’s 150th lifetime show which have all sold out at the venue. Joel’s MSG shows have redefined the concept of residency; the scope and ambition of Joel’s residency, where he has played once a month at Madison Square Garden, is unprecedented

CBS to re-air Billy Joel concert on Friday: What to know

This is the 2nd time it will re-air.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - CBS will re-air “Billy Joel: The 100th Live at Madison Square Garden — The Greatest Arena Run of All Time” on Friday on WBTV and its other affiliate stations.

Tune into WBTV at 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, to watch the concert. You can also watch live on our WBTV streaming and mobile apps.

The concert was originally broadcast on April 14. It was the legendary artist’s 100th concert and first-ever broadcast on network television. The concert was unfortunately cut short due to a programming timing error for those watching in the Eastern and Central Time Zones.

The program cut out during Joel’s performance of “Piano Man.”

The concert re-aired in its entirety the next day.

Joel also released a new song this year for the first time in 17 years, titled “It’s Time to Turn the Lights Back On.”

Since 2014, Joel’s record-breaking residency has achieved an unprecedented global milestone.  “The residency didn’t start with grand ambitions, we really just wanted to put some shows on sale and see how they would go,” said Steve Cohen, Joel’s 50-year lighting designer and creative director. “Then they all sold out. Madison Square Garden then decided to make him a franchise and play once a month. We thought that this might last a year, maybe two.  But none of us anticipated that it would go this long, let alone Billy. He kept saying that it would last until the public stopped buying tickets—the public just never stopped buying tickets.”

History of the Madison Square Garden Residency

A culmination of the group’s achievements over the last decade, the 100th concert special brought the magic of Joel’s residency to a broadcast network in April of this year—making use of state-of-the art technology and impeccable planning and design to capture the show live for over 23 million viewers. THR spoke with Steve Cohen, audio mixer Brian Riordan, director Paul Dugdale, and the show’s Executive Producer Barry Ehrmann about everything that went into bringing the 100th special to life.

Tell us about the 10-year residency at Madison Square Garden and how you wanted to celebrate Billy’s 100 consecutive sold out performances.

Steve Cohen: I think 10 years at Madison Square Garden is still something that none of us really understand or really believe. Billy’s played MSG—we’ve played Madison Square Garden—150 times since 1978. I’ve fortunately worked every show except one.

The idea of filming the 100th show special began when we were coming up against the last 12 shows, which ended in July earlier this year. The conversation came around to not only how we commemorate this residency, but more importantly, how we share it with the country and with the world. Because there’s a whole world out there that wasn’t aware of the magic that would happen every month when Billy would walk on stage and play in front of 18,000 fans in New York.

Can you tell me more about why you chose a prime-time broadcast on CBS over a streaming network?

Steve:  We’re old school. We come from the era of Sunday evening appointment television, the great network specials. And Billy thought that the best way to do this would be to give it to the people for free— on network television.

Barry Ehrmann: I think what Steve mentioned about network television is true. All those great shows that we grew up with like the Elvis Presley specials, or Sinatra, or Don Kirshner’s rock concert—that’s how people ingested music on television.

There’s also a special meaning to getting on network television, because it’s very difficult. Being accepted to a network and having over 23 million viewers—it’s just extraordinary. We really are in rarefied air. And I think it separates us from the bunch.

Steve: There are also a whole bunch of people in America that have maybe one streaming service, but a big majority of television viewing still comes from the big three networks. Networks are kind of the last bastion of free television, and I think that had a big part of our decision. There was a way to get this to the most people for the least amount of money. Billy’s very much like that. He keeps the ticket prices reasonable; he doesn’t sell the front two rows of his shows and gives those seats to people who bought cheap seats in the top of the rafters. He always has a mind to all of that and keeps his ear to that sensitivity.

How did you approach production, lighting, and design for the venue in order to differentiate it from a standard concert?

Steve: Well, it was a standard concert. We basically came in and captured the same production that has been playing for 90-some odd shows in Madison Square Garden. We modified it lighting-wise for a camera and were very mindful of making sure that there was something good to look at everywhere a camera was pointing. But fundamentally, what you saw on camera, what you saw in your home, was pretty much the same visual experience as if you were in Madison Square Garden.

We strove to do that; it was intentional. A lot of times concerts are specifically designed for television. When you walk into a room and see them, they’re usually uninteresting because they have a tendency to be underlit and limited in dynamics because the camera doesn’t see like the eye sees. But we took pains to try and capture the show as close to what the live experience was.

Barry: Unlike many specials where they have extraordinary set design or screens in the background behind the performer, Billy plays in 360 with his audience all around him. So as part of our set design, we came up with an idea to add two rows of risers behind the stage, which gave an inclusiveness to the audience, and made the shoot feel very homey with having people on the stage in the background of all the shots.

The show was lit beautifully for camera. Steve made it very romantic, but also designed the lighting to give Madison Square Garden an incredible grandeur and intimacy. When you watch the show, there are moments where you feel like you’re in a small club, which is amazing for a huge arena.

New York State of Mind

What were other audio, filming, and production considerations you had to keep in mind since the show could only happen once as a live capture?

Brian Riordan : Brian Ruggles, Billy’s front of house mixer and main sound engineer, was very careful in considering how the audience was going to be mic’d up to create the depth and immersion of  putting the viewer in the garden. And then the way we brought it into the studio, remixed it, and balanced it all and created this sort of immersion—the goal was really to recreate and recapture what was there. That balance was a combination of both clarity and punch out of the band and vocals, but also having that big, live sound and not having it be too washed out.

Paul Dugdale: Extensive preparation was vital. Learning the show back to front, and also researching multiple reference performances gave us the best chance of predicting what Billy might do on the night. The show is in the round so it makes it particularly perilous from a director point of view if your artist turns their back to the camera, so getting an understanding of movement and being able to react quickly to Billy’s spontaneous moves and turns was so important. The team and I worked very delicately on a camera plot that would not only give us the physical coverage we needed but also something that felt dynamic, exciting and that really helped amplify the emotion of the music and the sentiment of the lyrics.

Barry: Billy’s not a big fan of being captured on film. So how he sounds and how the band sounds and how the audience sounds is really important to him. And the amazing result of filming the show is that when you watch this thing, there are 18,000 people singing 85% of the lyrics at the top of their lungs. When the audience really sings in unison, these guys made it feel like you were sitting in the middle of the room and everybody was singing right around you. All those subtle things weren’t coincidental. They were planned out because we knew what we had to do to convey the magic on screen.

What are special characteristics of MSG that you tried to bring to life on screen?

Steve: There is physical chemistry at Madison Square Garden since it is built on top of Penn Station. It’s literally suspended six stories in the air and built on springs. So when you have 18,000 people jumping up and down in unison, the entire floor jumps up and down. That energy gets transferred into the building and Billy tunes into it. It’s much more experiential than going to a baseball stadium and sitting in the bleachers.

Brian: Energy is a great word, Steve. There’s an energetic quality that comes from Billy’s fans since Billy’s a storyteller and there’s an energetic emotion that comes through his words and the pictures that he’s painting when he’s performing. It’s the soundtrack of most people’s lives, especially those who grew up in the Northeast and in New York. Decades and decades of memories that are flooding through, and all of those emotions charge the air in the venue.

That’s the big challenge in this situation. Not bottling it or reducing it into something that fits into something small, but capturing it just as it is.

Did you film multiple performances or do any retakes?

Paul: We often expect concert films to be captured over multiple shows, just as one would if shooting comedy or other performance based projects, but part of what made this broadcast so special was that you can only play your 100th consecutive show once! We really reveled in that, and how this film becomes a snapshot in time—a landmark moment in an already extraordinary decorated career.  For me the fact that this is a unique moment is what makes it really special. Only having one chance adds pressure and responsibility to make sure we get it right the first time, and our whole crew really rose to the occasion.

Barry: No, everything was shot live. We only had one chance to shoot the 100th. We were in a totally uncontrolled environment. Other shows are very managed properties. For this, we came in, the 100th show was scheduled, 18,000 people came into the venue, and we had one chance to get it right. That’s what separates us from many of the shows on television. A rock concert is fraught with a lot of risk. All the cameras have to work. Everybody has to be on their game. The band has to sound good. Billy has to sound good.

There’s tremendous risk. We can’t come back and shoot it the next day. We’re not going to stop the show if cameras go down or the band makes a mistake. This is a once in a lifetime thing,

Steve: We’re in the pre-recorded category for the Emmy Award, right? But that’s a distinction in name only because we basically shot the entire two-and-a-half hour show but we were only allotted 89 minutes of air time due to commercial breaks. Since we went with a network versus streaming, we had to run ads. So really, the pre-recorded asterisk is only because we went in there to remove certain things and compile the show for time. But it’s as live as it gets.

Were there any filming techniques that helped differentiate the show from a standard variety or comedy type special?

Steve: We used cinema cameras, cinema lenses, and shot it as if it was film. Since we needed to not be intrusive to the live experience, we had to come up with clever ways of getting as many multiple angles as possible. And that dictated an incredibly high-tech camera package filled with robotics, Spidercams, and Railcams in order for us to be able to get in there and get all the coverage that we needed without being intrusive.

There also couldn’t be anything between Billy and the audience, which was very important, since we needed to make sure he had a clear line of sight to the audience and didn’t have cameras directly in his face so he couldn’t see members of the audience. At one point backstage, I walked back to the temporary control room and it literally looked like NASA. It was an incredible technical feat.

Barry: The 22 cameras technically surpassed what you would do for a typical comedy special or a variety special. Comedy shows are wonderful, but you’re basically taking eight, nine cameras and filming one person going back and forth like a metronome. What we do in concert films is just different. We don’t have the ability to do retakes, we can’t mix and match routines. We’re trying to capture multiple people on the stage, the audience, and band members and have one chance to get it right, and it separates us. We prepped 8 robotic tracking systems and a Spidercam system to make sure everything worked properly long before we made it to MSG. It was very complicated.

Paul: We were at the very sharpest end of where technology could take us. The entire project was shot on digital cine cameras, but also in large format, meaning the look and feel of the piece was as cinematic as possible. This enables us to more artfully guide the viewer’s eye to what we want them to see since the depth of field is so shallow. There were also creative challenges for capturing an artist like Billy, who predominantly sat at the piano, to introduce movement and development to the shots, turning his immobility whilst playing the piano into an advantage for us—in many ways it’s a dance.

Scenes from an Italian Restaurant

How do you see the show being remembered in history?

Paul: I feel very lucky having the opportunity of being a small part of something so historic. Shooting somewhere as iconic as Madison Square Garden, for an artist so indelibly linked with New York City was such an honor, and I was so proud that our document of it is being celebrated in this way.

Barry : The greatest concert film of all time!

Brian: That’s a tough one. I would probably say it’ll be remembered as not only great visual and  sonic concert film, but something that also energetically and emotionally really captured what Billy is all about and what he’s been doing hundreds of nights—consecutively in that same special venue with the same special crowd that has grown up listening to his music.

There’s an element of zeitgeist that only a few artists are able to tap into. And I think that this will be remembered as an hour and a half of an emotionally, sonically, and visually moving experience.

Steve: Good one. I like that. What I’d like it to be remembered for is that we captured a moment in history that will never be repeated ever again. I don’t think you’ll ever have a 75-year-old man sing songs that mean so much to so many people in a venue that he sold out for 150 nights. I don’t think anybody’s ever going to do that again. At least certainly not in my lifetime. So I think we captured something historic.
