2000 km in 4 days with my new Tata Safari facelift: 10 Pros & 7 Cons

car

Had the Nexon EV Prime previously and currently own the Nexon EV Max, alongside the new Safari.

BHPian shashankw839 recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

I am also a fellow Safari Accomplished Plus owner. I have recently purchased the car. I have been a strong EV enthusiast but there are no options in 7-seater cars in EVs so decided to pick up the Safari. I have owned the Nexon EV Prime before but my experience was not good and also now have the Nexon EV Max which has certain niggles too and I am waiting for a proper resolution still. I have owned tons of cars from different brands so far but love to support our brands and want them to succeed. However, I must sadly say that the customer service approach from our local brands particularly Tata and Mahindra is not up to the mark for sure. I’ll list some pros and cons I found with my car after driving it for 2000 in 4 days recently.

Tata Safari facelift Pros:

  • The car is solidly built. The LR platform outshines on the highways. The car eats up the miles in comfort.
  • Seating comfort for 7 passengers is quite good. I have the 7 seater configuration and 6 adults and 1 kid could travel without feeling cramped for space. The last row is usable by adults too.
  • Cameras are crisp and clear in the daytime and are okay in the nighttime. The parking guidelines are accurate. The 360-degree camera and front and back sensors are a boon to handle the bulky size of the vehicle.
  • The JBL music system is simply awesome. It’s too good for the car at this price point. The infotainment screen is crisp and Android Auto and Apple carplay being wireless is a very good feature.
  • The car has ample charging sockets for all occupants. The utility part of the car is neatly done.
  • Seats are super comfortable for all occupants. Just the right amount of cushion and ergonomics for everyone. Seat ventilation is a bonus.
  • I am simply blown away by the suspension setup on the car. I have used luxury cars with 2x and 3x the price of the safari and they would also unsettle on some bad road conditions when driven with full load. However, the safari is rock solid on bad roads. The suspension setup is very impressive.
  • The electronic power steering is light to drive and does not cause any fatigue. The driving position is perfect for my liking and I could do almost 500+ kms a day on an avg for 4 days straight without getting tired.
  • The engine is very well refined and noise levels are well isolated from the cabin. A commendable job has been done to make the cabin experience smooth on the new version.
  • The engine is very efficient as well. At lower three-digit speeds constantly, I could extract 13-15 km/l mileage with a full load which is very good.

Tata Safari facelift Cons:

  • The legacy of cons remains and they need to be sorted by Tata ASAP for the product to succeed. The first and foremost is the fit and finish of the car. There are uneven panel gaps all over the cabin and on the exterior.
  • The paint finish is not up to the mark at all places on the car. The fitment of plastic parts in the interior is not correct in many parts of the car. This causes some rattles when travelling.
  • The biggest hit-and-miss is Adas functions. In 4 days of travel, I got ADAS sensor malfunction warnings around 6 times. Adaptive cruise control would become unavailable when the sensor used to go mad. Lane keep assist is not active and the lane departure warning is very late in responding. Collision assist also does not work well and is very late to warn even when sensitivity is set to the highest level. Overall ADAS calibration is not up to the mark. The only thing that I found working correctly was the rear cross-traffic alert.
  • The OE tyres provided with the cars are hard. The lower trims get Bridgestones while the top trim gets MRFs with an odd size. The size 245/55 R19 is very odd and if you end up damaging one of your tyres, it is very hard to find a tyre of this size easily. I have upgraded my tyres to Pirelli Pzeros and they have made a huge difference to the car and its handling.
  • There are hardly any accessories available for the car with TML. The floor mats they provided do not match and they say it might take some months for the mats to arrive. So the car gets dirty easily.
  • As I said the cons continue and so another big issue is the lack of knowledge of the model with TML technicians. I took the car 2 times to the dealership so far and both times did not have a great experience. First, it was for the number plate fitment and the person there started fitting the plate right in front of the Adas sensor and was not even aware that he was going to block the radar. Fortunately, another technician was available who could understand what I was saying and then repositioned the plate. The second time the fog light was making noise and was loose and the technician mentioned that the full bumper needed to be taken down while it was just a matter of removing one cover from the wheel arch.
  • The headlights on the car are not good at all for highway conditions. The throw is not bright enough and neither it is long enough. The spread is ok but the throw is hardly 150-200 feet even on a high beam. Tata needs to provide better headlights for sure for safety reasons. I had to drive very cautiously at night due to the bad headlights.

Overall, it is a great car and Tata has come a long way with its improvements, however, they need to solve the niggles and basic customer service issues asap to give the owners a better experience. The issues with ADAS need to be solved on priority because they are related to safety.

2023 Tata Safari facelift review: Family car with bachelor's spirit

advantages of tata safari car

  • Decent styling updates on the outside
  • Much more premium cabin than before
  • No AWD or petrol engine option
  • Tata Safari gets subtle but significant updates to its exterior styling while the cabin has been armed with newer features.

Tata Safari

The Tata Safari is the flagship model for the Indian car maker that was first introduced in the country in 2021. At that time, the focus was as much on drawing inspiration from an iconic name as was on putting a brand-new model on a pedestal. This eventually resulted in the introduction of a three-row vehicle that promised SUV-like style but claimed MPV-like comfort. Fast forward just two years and the updated Tata Safari has a new wardrobe to show off in 2023.

Tata has been steadily increasing its focus on passenger vehicles that not just drive well and have top-notch safety credentials but look cutting-edge as well. Or at least extremely contemporary. Just look at the models like Altroz hatchback, the updated Nexon compact SUV and Nexon EV or even the latest Harrier SUV. Here are cars across different body types that showcase the current best that Tata Motors' designers have to offer. And it is a treat for sure. Towards this end, the new Tata Safari has been given a noticeable makeover as well even though it obviously retains its OG flavour.

And then there is the pivotal factor of in-car features - the more, the better, even if you end up not using a significant chunk of these in the long run. The Koreans started the trend and rivals like Tata Motors are only too keen to hit back. The Tata Safari, therefore, was always going to be pampered and peppered with features galore. So how do all of these factors come together to manifest in the flagship product from Tata Motors? Here is the first-drive review of the 2023 Tata Safari facelift:

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Exterior

The updated Safari looks a tad bit more sporty compared to the outgoing model, while still retaining its largely sophisticated exterior design language. The face, for instance, has been reworked and now sports a new grille, a reworked vertical housing for the fog lamps and headlights, and a stretched DRL bar that connects the sequential DRLs on either side. In a nutshell, the comprehensive updates of the front fascia have given the SUV a butch yet premium look, making it significantly distinctive from the previous model which it has replaced.

Tata Safari

There is not much change in the side profile of the new Tata Safari SUV, apart from the reworked alloy design on the 19-inch wheels. The design is likely to evoke different reactions from different viewpoints instead of inviting unilateral awe. But what works really well is how Tata Motors' designers have managed to snub the use of chrome elements and still come up with a visually striking profile. Overall, the side profile of the SUV looks slightly curvy and pretty clean. The subtly flared wheel arches give the SUV a bold and muscular look, while the new design alloy wheels enhance the premium sporty feel.

There are no chrome elements on the rear of the Safari either, where a stretched LED bar connects the two tail lights and runs all across the length of the trunk door which, by the way, offers powered powered-open option. Besides that, the tailgate looks pretty sculpted thanks to the glossy black panel running through the centre of the trunk that also houses the sleek LED bar. The integrated roof spoiler and chunky black bumper with a thick metal skid plate are other design elements that come enhancing the SUV's bold visual appearance.

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Interior

The new Tata Safari's cabin has become much more premium now and a slew of updates to the feature list as well as to the upholstery lend the vehicle a premium appeal that would have otherwise been restricted to models in segments above the one this car competes in. The top-end Accomplished variant - or persona, as Tata Motors refers to it, comes with a dual-tone colour scheme inside the cabin but the White theme on the seats would be quite hard to maintain in pristine condition.

Tata Safari

The layered dashboard now gets an artificial wood panel which is a nice touch while the central section is dominated by a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display unit that is intuitive, puts out clear feed from the 360-degree cameras and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The map feed can also be redirected to the all-digital driver display screen for better navigation which now sports customisable layouts.

The steering wheel has also been updated and is now a four-spoke set with mounted controls and has an illuminated Tata logo on it. This is certainly another nice touch from Tata Motors enhancing the premium quotient inside the cabin of the new Safari SUV. The updated steering wheel is quite easy to operate and control the advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) functionalities that this car offers, courtesy of the layout of the control buttons on the wheel. On that note, the new Tata Safari SUV offers 11 ADAS functions in a further bid to aid driving safety and convenience.

There are plenty of other convenience features that the new Safari packs as well, whether it is the dual-zone climate control function, air purification system, ventilated seats at the front and middle, voice-activated panoramic sunroof, Alexa to Home technology or remote access to the vehicle.

Space remains the same inside the cabin of the new Tata Safari, which means that the SUV continues to be a decently spacious vehicle for passengers in all three rows. Space in that third row, however, continues to come at the cost of a compromised boot storage space. But that's really expected, right?

Tata Safari

Overall, the new Tata Safari SUV come as a very well-appointed vehicle with quite a lot of space for comfortable long trips but now, at least in the top-spec version, is significantly more premium than before.

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Safety

Tata Motors has been taking the front row across different segments in the Indian passenger vehicle market over the last few years when it comes to making safe cars. While the modern Tata cars come with a wide range of safety features, they also come with robust build quality as well. The Tata Safari facelift too comes following the same strategy.

The Tata Safari comes well-equipped with a host of safety features designed to provide peace of mind to the occupants. Some of the advanced safety technologies available onboard the Tata Safari facelift include multiple airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, electronic parking brake with auto hold, rain-sensing wipers, rollover mitigation, hill hold control, 360-degree view HD camera system, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, front collision prevention function, blind spot detection etc. Moreover, it also gets features like ABS with EBD, Isofix child seat anchors etc.

Here are some of the key safety features onboard the Tata Safari.

  • Seven airbags with six as standard
  • Electronic stability control as standard
  • Three-point seatbelts in all rows
  • Seatbelt reminder for all passengers
  • Isofix tethers
  • Seatbelts with retractor, pre-tensioner, load limiter and anchor pretensioner
  • Reinforced cabin structure promising to provide symmetric crash performance and side pole impact

Update: Keeping the trend of introducing safe cars in India, Tata Motors has delivered again with the new Safari and Harrier, as both these two SUVs have achieved five-star Global NCAP safety ratings for adult and child occupant categories. Besides that, the Tata Safari and the Tata Harrier SUVs scored a five-star safety rating at the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP or BNCAP) as well. While announcing the test results Bharat NCAP authorities have announced that the Tata Safari and Tata Harrier have scored five-star ratings with top-notch adult and child safety ratings in frontal, side and pole side impact tests.

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Performance

Here is where the updated Tata Safari SUV could have been improved so much more. But isn't. So much has already been mentioned - and experienced - about the 2.0-litre turbo diesel motor under the hood and the choice between an automatic gearbox and a six-speed manual stick. Yes, the turbocharged diesel motor could have been refined further. Yes, the grunt is still uncomfortably palpable when pushing the vehicle to its limits. But yes, the new Tata Safari - especially with the automatic transmission - is still quite a fun car to drive and has enough power to get a move on when required. The suspension continues to hold its own on rough roads and the steering still has a nice heft to aid matters.

Tata Safari

But why this otherwise very capable model does not also come with a petrol engine under its hood is beyond the comprehension of many. Tata Motors is almost snubbing the petrol-buying audience in the country, a group that is steadily increasing. There is also no 4x4 option for the updated version of the SUV because the platform on which the new Tata Safari is based on does not allow for it. But here is also a miss, especially as this model does go up against authentic off-road options in the market as well.

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Verdict

Tata Safari

The updated Tata Safari is a big step up in terms of its exterior design and cabin features and quality when compared to the previous model. Space has always been this car's strength but the additions to the feature list arm this SUV to the absolute teeth.

The diesel motor and the automatic transmission work extremely well in tandem but as mentioned previously, Tata Motors ought to strongly consider a petrol option for the model as well, especially considering the number of buyers favouring the petrol engines are increasing across India over the last few years

2023 Tata Safari facelift first drive review

2023 Tata Safari facelift gets a bigger grille

Tata Motors had quite a task at hand while developing the second-generation Safari four years ago. Not only did it have to justify the legendary name tag with rugged looks, exceptional ride comfort and also be super capable, but it would also have to take on two competent rivals, the MG Hector Plus and the Mahindra XUV500 . Now, the list of rivals has grown, with vehicles like the Mahindra XUV700 , Toyota Innova HyCross , Kia Carens , and Hyundai Alcazar bringing their A-game, and the Safari, which has remained relatively unchanged since its beginning, has begun to feel a little antiquated in this company.

With this comprehensive 2023 facelift though, Tata intends to bring the Safari back into the game with sharpened styling, more tech and also a much-needed mechanical update — electric steering wheel. Let's see how it performs.

2023 Tata Safari facelift styling

Both the Safari and the Harrier facelifts have received a refreshed exterior, but this time around it's a lot easier to differentiate between the two. From afar the front of both SUVs might look identical, but closer inspection reveals a slightly different story. Both get a bigger parametric grille, but the Safari gets body coloured inserts in it and a brushed silver lip lower down on the front bumper. On the Harrier, both the grille and the lip are all-black which make it look more youthful, whereas the Safari is going for a more grown-up, executive, vibe. However, I would like to draw attention to the fact that there is definitely room for improvement in the way the body-coloured inserts on the grille are finished. The paint on our test vehicle had already begun to chip.

There are a few similarities between the two, the most identifiable of them is the full-width LED light bar connecting the DRLs. The next one are vertically stacked LED headlights, with the Safari getting a chrome inlay in them with 'Safari' badging. There's also an air vent under the headlight pods on either side to aid aerodynamics and cooling of brakes. The new Safari gets the option of 19-inch alloy wheels on its top-end trims. We saw this wheel design on the Sierra concept first and now it's in production on the Safari. And I have to say it's a really good looking wheel.

In profile, the SUV now features 'Safari' badging in the front doors and chrome door handle and window trim treatment. The tail section is revised and now boasts a full-width LED light bar connecting the wraparound tail lights. And just like the front, there's also a brushed silver skid plate adorning its rear.

Overall the new Safari looks more grown-up compared to the Harrier and that differentiation was important between the two brands, which Tata Motors had executed very cleanly.

2023 Tata Safari facelift interior and features

The pre-facelift Safari Red Dark edition pioneered Tata's new 13.2-inch infotainment system and it was a big step up on the archaic, smaller infotainment touchscreen the Safari made its debut with. But it still had its problems — it was laggy and didn't respond to fast touches well. That has been taken care of on the 2023 Safari facelift. It's now highly responsive and very intuitive to use.

Taking centre stage on the dashboard of the new Safari, is a new capacitive touch panel which controls the air-con settings, fog lights, the new electric tail gate and 360-degree camera system. There's also a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster which displays a lot of information, even Google Maps. It's a little better than the one on the new Harrier, because it has bigger fonts and is therefore easier to read.

But the biggest change to the new Safari's interior is Tata's new four spoke digital steering wheel. It's bigger than the one we saw on the Nexon facelift and features an illuminated Tata logo in the centre. Flanking the centre digital pad are touch buttons to control your adaptive cruise and even audio volume. These buttons are nice to use but don't feel very high quality. They could do with a more tactile feel and better damping. If you opt for the automatic transmission, you also get paddle shifters behind this wheel, which also feel very cheap. Moreover, there's also a big problem with the way they function, more on that later.

There is a wireless charger, but the Safari also has a 45W Type-C USB port, which allows for fast charging of your devices via cable, as well as a Type-A port on the front. A panoramic sunroof with mood lighting, six-way electric driver's seat, four-way electric front passenger seat, front seat coolers, and configurable mood light are among the other features. But wait there's more, the Safari also gets front and rear parking sensors, 360-degree cameras, automated headlights, rain-sensing wipers and, of course, the new electric tailboard with gesture control.

You can opt for the ultra-comfy captain seats, which offer ventilation, on the second row of the Safari. Sure, they make it a six-seater, but if you want the ultimate chauffeur driven experience in this SUV, they're a no-brainer. Just like the Harrier, the rear headrests here get movable extension which aids comfort when you're taking a nap. The third row of the Safari gets a Type-C and a Type-A USB port, bespoke AC blower controls and vents. But just like before, it is better suited for kids and short adults due to the lack of knee room and under thigh support.

On the safety front this SUV gets seven airbags (even a knee airbag at the front, which is a first for this segment) as standard, ABS, ESP, a tyre pressure monitoring system and a whole host of ADAS features from the Red Dark edition like lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot warning, rear traffic cross alert and the new addition of adaptive cruise control with stop and go.

2023 Tata Safari facelift steering and dynamics

The only mechanical, and a much needed, change to the new Safari is the new Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS). This system has done wonders to the way this SUV drives by completely changing its dynamics. The previous hydraulic unit felt too heavy at city speeds and too light at highway speeds. And because of those factors, it required all your attention when driving at higher speeds. Even with the slightest of undulations or imperfections on the road, the steering used to wander all over the place. But not anymore. The EPAS system eliminates all the steering kickbacks. It is light and makes a significant difference to the way the Safari now feels to drive both, in the city and on the highways. Sure, it lacks the outright feel a hydraulic unit gives you, but it is much more direct and that helps you to place the vehicle exactly where you want it to be.

The Safari is bigger and heavier than the Harrier and the way it can tackle corners now, with the EPAS, is even more impressive than its younger sibling. You can have a really good time behind its wheel. As expected, there is body roll, but it is very nicely controlled. The larger 245-section tyres (with these 19-inch wheels) provide excellent grip and allow you to take a corner a lot faster than you'd expect in an SUV this huge.

Nothing has changed in terms of the suspension because that was one area which didn't require tweaking at all. The Safari continues to be just as comfy and feel just as robust as before. The strong underpinnings and sorted suspension allows you to hammer down rough roads and keeps the SUV stable at triple digit speeds. Even with the bigger 19-inch wheels, it does a good job of ironing out the numerous potholes our country's roads are plagued with.

2023 Tata Safari continues to get diesel power

Both the Safari and Harrier will get the option of a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine in a couple of years, but for now the SUVs continue with diesel power. The tried and tested two-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 168bhp and 350Nm is retained on the facelifts. It's a powerhouse. Even on the heavier Safari, it never skips a beat. There's a good amount of low-end and mid-range grunt which ensures overtakes are a walk in the park, even when the SUV is fully loaded. For a diesel mill, it's fairly refined too. It is audible at higher revs, but doesn't pass on a lot of vibrations to the cabin or the steering wheel.

You have the option to choose between the six-speed manual or the six-speed torque converter automatic with this engine and what I sampled was the latter. This Hyundai sourced gearbox suits the character of the Safari a lot better than the manual. Tata Motors is also offering paddle shifters with this gearbox now but they are a big let down. They don't feel good to touch and seem to have a mind of their own. For starters, you can use them only in the 'Sport' mode. If you're driving in City mode and use either paddle, the Sport mode gets activated automatically, with an annoying voice prompt announcing that you've just switched and switches back to city mode after a while. But even when you're in the Sport mode, you don't get full control over the gearbox in manual mode. It doesn't let you shift under 1500rpm, or in some instances even under 2000rpm, and doesn't upshift at the redline. That beats the whole purpose of having them in the first place. This also means that efficiency will be ever so marginally affected if the car keeps defaulting to sport every time you use the paddle shifters. Another big niggle was the fact that the left and the right paddle had an inconsistent feel. One felt tactile while the other felt squishy.

2023 Tata Safari facelift engine

2023 Tata Safari facelift verdict and price

The new Safari retains all the strong points of the pre-facelift model and grows on it. It is just as comfy and feels just as robust as before. It is now better than ever. It looks more modern, is a technological tour de force on the inside and with the electric steering has become an even better handler. But just like the Harrier, there are a few areas where it needs improvement, particularly in terms of overall fit and finish.

Things like the paint finishing on the grille, the finish around the gear lever was poor and the electric tailgate stopped working due to heavy usage. I’m sure all this will get sorted out in the days to come, but it should have been sorted out right at the start.

The Safari has always been priced aggressively and this facelift won't be an anomaly. Sure, it will demand a little premium over the pre-facelift model, but even then it will continue to be a good value for money product. The Tata Harrier and Tata Safari facelift prices will be announced on October 17, 2023. So stay tuned to evoindia.com and @evoindia on Instagram for our thoughts and analysis on the pricing as soon as it is out.

Tata Safari Pros And Cons - The Ultimate SUV?

One of the most exciting launches of 2021 was that of the iconic, Tata Safari. The new Tata Safari might have dodged the 4X4 set-up and the body on frame chassis but now it makes more sense on the monocoque one. In this article, we bring you all the pros and cons of the 2021 Tata Safari and share if it is the ultimate SUV.

Improved Styling

Believe it or not, this new Safari is the badass one. Sure, the discontinued Strome had its own aura but the 2021 version surely has created its own macho appeal. The split headlight design set up at the front, 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, stepped up roof with functional roof rails and the skid plates at the front and rear give it a sporty appeal.

Also Read: Volkswagen Brings In An Affordable Version Of Polo TSI At Rs 7.41 Lakh

You also get the signature chrome knurling grille at the front but it is the Adventure Persona Variant that stands out. The tropical mist colour scheme and blacked-out treatment on alloy wheels, door handles, roof rails are some of the things which stands out in the new Safari.

The cabin is where the driver and the occupant spend most of their time. And the Ivory White colour scheme surely brings out a richness in the cabin. However, the design pattern is similar to that of Harrier with the same dashboard pattern, gloss black treatment on the door panels, the lower part of the dashboard and you also get the soft-touch plastics.

The second row is roomier and with the boss mode, it makes the chauffeur drives an easier one. You have the AC vents and the USB ports to charge your device and to jump into the third row, you just tumble the seats and you can go there easily. However, it is best suited for children for longer journeys. Adults can be seated but for short journeys only because of the raised knees.

It offer s a larger 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with modern connectivity features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also offers cruise control, automatic climate control, multi-function steering wheel, electronic parking brake, widest panoramic sunroof and everything you need as a basic necessity.

advantages of tata safari car

Feature-wise, the top-spec of the Safari is reserved with six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, Traction control, drive modes, hill-hold control, tyre pressure monitoring system, high-speed alert system, front seat belt reminder and among others.

Peppy Engine Performance

Even though it uses the 2.0L FCA sourced engine as the Harrier, it is quick. When you are driving the automatic version then select the Sports mode and you see the outright performance. Those 170 horses will come right in support of you and the power is felt good.

What's amazing is that the braking for this SUV is supremely reliable and the discs at the rear help it further. The ride quality is not that bad and the Safari takes on the bumpy roads easily. However, the same could not be said for passengers sitting in the third row.

Select Terrain Modes

Even though the new Safari is not 4x4 equipped, Tata has ensured to give select terrain modes which are limited to Normal, Rough and Wet. So the Rough is absolutely a beast when you are stuck in a little off-road patch. But do not go for the treacherous 4x4 patches as it'll fail you.

Heavy Steering Wheel - Drive it at city speeds and you will realize that you can't manoeuvre the Safari at city speeds.

Long travel of clutch - If you opt for the manual version of the Safari then your left foot will surely be a pain in bumper to bumper city traffic.

Lack of features for Rs 25 lakh on-road, Delhi price - No ventilated seats, wireless charging, 360-degree camera and one-touch boot close. These are surely some features which one expects.

Boot space is a joke - At 73 litres when all seats are up, the boot space of the Safari is actually a joke. Other rivals like MG Hector Plus offers 155 litres and the upcoming Alcazar offers 180 litres with all three rows up.

White Interior Will Get Dirty In No Time - While we love the ivory white colour scheme in the cabin, we cannot escape the fact that it will get dirty in no time if not take care of properly.

So do you agree with the pros and cons of the 2021 Tata Safari? Do tell us in the comment section as to what do you think about this SUV. Also, make sure you are a member of our exclusive 91Wheels Telegram group where we bring you all the latest updates related to the Indian Automotive Industry.

The all-new Tata Safari will launch in India on 22 February , becoming the carmakers new flagship SUV. Tata has already begun accepting booking for the SUV with the booking amount set at Rs 30,000.

  • The Safari is the widest and tallest model in the comparison
  • It comes with a 170hp, 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine
  • Tata offers both a 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox

There has been a lot of buzz around the Safari in the run up to its launch, and everyone is keen to see how it will compare to its rivals – the MG Hector Plus and Mahindra XUV500 . So, we have compiled all the technical specification of the Safari and its rivals, to see how they compare in terms of dimensions and powertrain.

2021 Tata vs rivals: dimensions

In terms of dimensions, all these three-row SUVs are quite close to one another, though each model has its strong suit. The MG Hector is the longest SUV in the comparison and has the longest wheelbase as well, with the Tata Safari coming in a close second.

The Safari is the widest model in this comparison, which when paired with its length, bodes well for its cabin space. At 1,890mm wide, the XUV500 loses out to the Safari by the slimmest of margins. In addition to its width, the Safari is also the tallest (at 1,786mm) of the SUVs we are comparing, with the XUV500 being within a hair’s margin of it (only 1mm shorter).

With all three rows of seats up, despite only offering 155-litre of space - the Hector Plus has the most boot space in the segment, as the XUV500 has 62-litres less and the Safari has the least amount of room being 82-litres smaller. Things change a bit with the third-row of seats folded, as here the XUV500 that has the smallest boot followed by the Safari, while the Hector Plus retains top spot with the largest boot.

2021 Tata vs rivals: diesel engine

Looking at the powertrain options, the units in Safari and Hector Plus are the most powerful as both models use a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing 170hp and 350Nm. Despite the Mahindra XUV500 having the largest engine in this group – a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, at 155hp it makes 15hp less than its rivals. Though the XUV500’s engine is the torquiest churning out 360Nm (which is 10Nm more than its rivals).

Coming to the gearbox options, all three SUVs come paired with 6-speed manual gearboxes as standard. The Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV500 both come with 6-speed torque converter automatic gearboxes, with the MG Hector Plus being the only model not to be offered with an auto box at this point.

It is also worth noting that all the SUVs we are comparing are currently only available with a front-wheel drive layout. The XUV500 used to be offered with an all-wheel drive layout earlier, though the carmaker dropped those versions with the transition to BS6. The Tata Safari on the other hand, due to its Land Rover derived platform, can accommodate an all-wheel drive system, which Tata may develop in the future.

2021 Tata vs rivals: future competitors

The three-row SUV segment is going to get more competitive as the year goes on, as the both the next-gen Mahindra XUV500  and Hyundai’s new  seven-seat Creta based SUV are slated to be launched in India later in 2021.

Pros and cons of all Tata Motors vehicles revealed: From the Nano and Tiago to the Safari and Hexa

Tata is on resurgence mode, with a whole new line-up by 2023, we look at the vehicles currently on sale and tell you what we love about them and what we don’t like.

Pros and cons of all Tata Motors vehicles revealed: From the Nano and Tiago to the Safari and Hexa

Tata is a company on revival, coming out of a long term slump in Passenger vehicles that started with the Tata Indica in 1999. Today 20 years later, growing pains firmly in the rear view mirror, Tata Motors is being reborn a brand refreshed and rejuvenated and ready to take on the global automotive scene. Spurred on by new management in the form of Guenter Butschek, and a new design direction Tata motors in the form of Impact design is headed to be one of the most exciting companies out of the Indian Subcontinent. Earlier this year at the Geneva Motor show Tata announced that they would revamp their entire line up by 2023. But before they do that we take a look at what Tata has on sale right now and measure each product in lieu of their pros and cons. Tata Nano:

Tata Nano GenX

The Tata Nano, could perfectly described as flash in the pan. A marketing strategy gone terribly wrong, the Tata Nano created waves when it was launched with the “World’s Cheapest Car ” Tag. Unfortunately, Tata’s marketing strategy that targeted motorcyclists instead of people in the market for a small cheap get-about, has been called as the Nano’s greatest downfall. Initial reliability issues combined with media reports of fires and general instability saw the Nano quickly fall from grace.

Ultra-Compact Dimensions make the Tata Nano a breeze to drive and park in any city 600 cc Petrol Motors is very efficient, and returns of Fuel is great

Cons: At 600cc Three pot motor is devoid of grace, it sounds almost rubbly Initial safety and reliability issues have created a stigma of unsafety, that is no longer true The cheapest car in the world tag backfired on Tata Motors.

Why Tata Motors’ electric vehicle ambition is full of risks as it still tries to wash off Nano’s failure Tata Tiago:

Refinement Issues Lack-Lusture Interiors

The Tata Tigor is essentially the modern day answer to Tata’s Indigo –their first ever sedan– however, thanks to it’s unique ‘fast-back” design the Tata notchback looks as good as it can get in the sub-compact SUV segment. We liked the way it looks so much that we had even declared it as the best looking of the compac hatch generation. Pros

Attractive New Age Design Spacious Interiors Cons

Bland Performance Dated Interior design

Tata Utility Vehicles

If not for your run of the mill passenger vehicles, cars like the Sumo, the Safari and other Tata Utes have built quite a reputation for themselves. The two new Utility vehicle take forward Tata’s never say never attitude with some new generation styling make them one hell of an addition to the market.

advantages of tata safari car

The newest Tata has been the strongest volume driver for Tata since its launch last year. In the short time since it’s production began already 25,000 Nexons have left Tata’s Ranjangaon manufacturing facility emphasizing the tremendous feedback that the Nexon has received. Pros: Fresh and Unique Design Powerful 110 hp motor Packed with segment par feature

Tata Safari

advantages of tata safari car

The Safari may well be in the sunset of it’s term of the shelf but in it’s time it was one of the better looking Utility vehicles in the country. It was the original bad-boy from the 90s that morphed into the grand old man of Indian off-road. Engines, Chassis the Safari has seen it all. Pros: Timeless design Iconic Brand value

Cons: Major refinement Issues in context to mode NVH can be so bad, that gear lever vibrates

advantages of tata safari car

The first ute from Tata was the Hexa, and it became evident that the Hexa is a serious effort by Tata in the right direction. It’s rich list of features, spacious cabin and a good mix of powertrain options made it a strong contender in its price segment and we liked the vehicle on most parameters when we tested it for the first time.

Pros: Value for Money

Plush Interiors for the Price Tag

Dated and Small Infotainment system No dead-pedal in the Automatic

Introduction

SUVs are the rage, be it the smaller sub-four-metre or (arguably) micro-SUV kind or the full-sized, three-row kind, some even with their off-road credentials. The updated Harrier and Safari have returned to this bandwagon and brought along more than just a few new tricks up their sleeves. We recently had the opportunity to spend some time with the 2024 Safari, and here’s what we learned about it in its stint at the CarWale garage.

How practical is it?

On the practicality front, the Safari packs a Punch (no pun intended). It is spacious and has space for numerous nitty gritties, water bottles, and then some more. Climb into the driving seat and you have the electrically adjustable seat that eases the process of finding the right position. Additionally, the memory functions aid the convenience factor, and you won’t have to sit and search for the right position whenever shuffling with another driver. The front passenger seat even gets a Boss mode that allows it to be adjusted from the second row with the help of the buttons on the right side.

An underrated element in the second row is the mobile holder, positioned above the bottle holders on both sides, which keeps the phone lying flat, thus removing any anxiety of it falling, moving, or scratching. The occupants are also pampered with soft foam cushions sitting ahead of the standard headrests, reminiscent of a certain luxury sedan more than three times its price tag.

Then there are sun blinds in the second row that came to our much-needed rescue in the 40-degree heat on the day we were shooting. Legroom in the second row too is plenty, although the same can’t be said about the third row. The third row is best suited for short runs or intra-city trips.

A few things that work against the Safari include the smaller rear windshield that limits rear visibility and the AC vents for the third row positioned in front of the small windows, which make it marginally more claustrophobic. The white seat upholstery, while looking luxurious, tends to get soiled pretty fast and cleaning it isn’t an easy job either.

What’s on the feature list?

The Safari boasts a long feature list, like the panoramic sunroof that adds to the roomy feeling, complementing the white upholstery which also aids the feel of a spacious cabin. One of the party pieces is the new 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which has a smooth UI and feels tactile to use. The front seats are also ventilated, but even at full chatter, they barely managed to give any respite from the terrible Mumbai heat. The fan noise in both units is fairly audible too, unless you have loud music or passengers talking.

The front row and second row both get USB and Type-C ports, something that is a sigh of relief for a select few like me who don’t have a Type-C to Type-C cable at our disposal. That said, you’ll never fall short of these ports as there is a set in the front armrest as well as in the second row. And if you manage to fill up all these slots, then there’s a wireless charger in the centre console of the dashboard.

The latter also houses the new touch-based unit for AC controls, which, although feels good to use, attracts a lot of scratches and dirt due to the Piano Black finish. Tata has made generous use of soft-touch elements, and the hard plastics on certain parts of the door certainly dampen the otherwise good feel.

The fit and finish, especially concerning quality, left us wanting for more. Certain panels were misaligned, one of which happened to be the point where the door and dashboard meet, visible in the photo above. One fact we noticed, weirdly enough, is that the second row doesn’t get its set of blower controls while the third row does.

What’s the fuel efficiency like?

The Safari has a claimed mileage of 14.08kmpl, thus translating into a range of approximately 704km, courtesy of the 50-litre diesel tank. We tested the fuel efficiency of the car, and it returned 10.97kmpl in the city and 13.94kmpl on the highway, hence resulting in an average of 12.40kmpl and a real-world range of 620km.

How does it perform on a daily commute?

Moving from a mid-size SUV (or, arguably a hatchback on stilts, as some would agree) as my daily driver to the Safari gave me a far more commanding seating position and a better view of the bonnet in all its glory, while the 360-degree camera made parking a breeze.

The steering of the Safari is fairly light to begin with, and builds up a little weight as you go faster, not as much to make it feel involving, and neither too light to make it feel dead. The ride quality is one of the best attributes of the SUV, as it glides over potholes, unpaved roads, and a lot more, all despite running on a set of 19-inch wheels.

Coming to the NVH, it can be a bit harsh on sudden acceleration but is overall on the quieter side at city speeds. The oodles of torque available from the lower range of rpm help the cause and ensure you have a smooth ride for the most part.

What’s the deal with the warranty?

The Tata Safari is offered with a standard warranty of three years or 1 lakh kilometres, whichever is earlier. Further, customers can choose from extended warranty packages of 3+1 years and 1.3 lakh kilometres or 3+2 years or 1.25 lakh kilometres.

Can you live with one?

The Safari then, comes up as an able SUV that can complete most of the jobs assigned to it. The diesel engine is frugal too, and will be the ideal companion on a road trip where it will effortlessly much miles and keep all the occupants happy with its ride quality, comfort, and an array of features. Yes, it does have its share of flaws as well, but then if we can make do with the flaws of other humans, I’m sure a few small issues with Safari won’t matter in the bigger picture as well.

Did I mention that the top-spec Safari (Accomplished Plus AT dual-tone), selling at Rs. 26.89 lakh commands a premium of just Rs.1 lakh over the top-spec Harrier (Fearless Plus AT dual-tone), as the latter has an asking price of Rs. 25.89 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom). Need I say more?
