U2: Elevation - Live In Boston

And so the world's biggest band, and the one who've managed to last longer than near enough anyone else without going completely shit - though the most recent album seems to have been treading water somewhat - release their first long form DVD. To make up for the fact that tickets were astronomically overpriced, and venues obscenely small for their audience (or, how shall one put it, about 10% of the people who bought the album and wanted to see them managed to get tickets), there's more than enough U2 here.

Firstly a very well put-together, slick but accurate live video that matches the alleged intimacy of the tour and moves away from the spectacle of the TV to the power of the musicians within the group. Secondly a half hour documentary that seems intent on interviewing anybody who has anything to do with U2 without actually revealing anything about the group at all, which is one of the most curious things about them, the fact that after 23 years they've managed to maintain both the same lineup and not gone shit. Even if Bono's heart-on-sleeve sincerity is a bit erm, grating. God, he really really does mean it doesn't he?

Thirdly you get a multi-angle version of the same gig, a Bootleg Fancam shot on cheap VHS is the venue completely with wonky angles and crap sound, and a Directorcam - who wants to watch the control room for the video cameras alongside the director barking instructions into the mikes for "more closeups! rocking!" - which is completely superflous.

On top of those you get three extra live tracks, including a sort-of-demo of Stuck In A Moment, and a smattering of trailers for other live videos and DVD-links that I can't be bothered to mess around with. Overall, packed to the gills with value, but not entirely necessary to anyone unless you love U2. And if you love U2, this'll make you a very happy bunny.

Background Information

U2 played the Fleet Center in Boston MA on June 5 and 6, 2001, and again on June 8 and 9, 2001. The first two nights of the four night Boston stay were filmed. There was also some filming done on each of the latter two nights. On one of these nights, June 6, the show was broadcast live to the NBA finals and shown on television. This footage was also shown on numerous European television channels in October 2001, and also on DirectTV in the USA starting in November 2001. A 90-minute version even played on VH1 in November 2001.

Late in November, the performance was released to the home video market in VHS and DVD formats. The VHS contained just the basic concert, whereas the DVD included additional bonus features. The DVD featured audio in PCM Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. One of the added features on the DVD was the ability to watch multiple views of some of the songs, although not all songs are available on this feature. The video is filmed in normal 4:3 ratio.

There are two easter eggs contained on the release. The first is on disc one. Click the “Making of the Filming of”. At the end look for the Dreamchaser logo in the credits. At the top of the logo, you will see a little Bono head. Click on it quickly. Enter the following on the next screen into the flashing cubes: 1 enter 9 enter 7 enter 6 enter while the cubes are flashing. This accesses the special BonoCam feature for the first 4 minutes of “Elevation”. The second easter egg is on the second disc, and again gives you access to BonoCam footage, this time of “Until the End of the World”. To access go to the help menu by clicking the question mark in the bottom left. When in the help menu you enter 1 enter 9 enter 9 enter 1 enter and the video should start.

A number of edits were done on the material from June 6, including cuts to “Kite,” “Desire,” “Where the Streets Have No Name,” “Bullet the Blue Sky,” and “Walk On.” Further “Stay” was taken from the June 5 show as it was not performed on June 6. “Gone” is a mix of two nights, June 5 and 6. And the BonoCam footage that can be found in the easter eggs was taken from the June 9th Boston show.
