Casio’s Affordable New Outdoor Watch Offers More Tech Than Ever

The new Pro Trek watches from Casio offer more G-Shock-level rugged, practical tech for serious outdoor use — and much more.

Casio-Pro-Trek-PRT-B50-gear-patrol-full-lead

By Zen Love

Casio’s Pro Trek sub-brand offers a lot of the same features and toughness as its brother-brand, G-Shock, but with more of a focus on pragmatic functionality — and a bit less of the brash attitude. Specifically, Pro Trek is intended for outdoor enthusiasts or professionals with a range of features that are genuinely useful, and the tech just keeps expanding. The newest Pro Trek line is the PRT-B50 series, and it introduces the latest technology, which includes an accelerometer and smartphone connectivity.

Casio counts the accelerometer among its sensors, bringing the number to four and resulting in the new Quad Sensor branding, which includes a compass, thermometer, and pressure sensor. The focus on the accelerometer isn’t about measuring speed, but rather about detecting accelerations in gravity, which is how your smartphone does things like count your steps — and that’s its intended purpose in the new Casio watches, which began introducing the technology this year in some G-Shock models .

Casio-Pro-Trek-PRT-B50-gear-patrol-2-feature

Casio is good about keeping the uses of its smartphone connectivity to the the functionality you might actually want to use on a watch (rather than trying to be a full-featured smartphone on your wrist) — but there are certainly features here with a steep learning curve, and more than most people will use.

The new Pro Trek PRT-B50 watches come in three different versions at launch with designs and colorways that look as if made to match camping gear. In lightweight resin (fancy plastic) cases, they will wear comfortably as most Casio watches do despite significant measurements both in diameter and thickness. Each PRT-B50 version has a price of $200.

Letter from the founder – Matthew Anderson

My love of watches started almost 30 years ago when I inherited my grandfather’s watch. A watch that is still in my collection and one of my most prized possessions although not the most valuable in terms of money.

Re: The smallest Pro Trek ever made reviiewed. Well just to keep everyone updated. I have been wearing the watch to work this week. I have not been in for over a month so it is a pleasant change. The watch wears very well with a suit and shirt. It wears very small. There has to be compromises due to its tiny size. The LCD has to be similarly tiny and you just have to take a second to focus on it to assimilate the information. It does have ten levels of adjustable contrast though so that helps. The watch is exactly on time with my atomic 'G's after 3 weeks. This is just luck of course but is very useful to me with a watch like this. I like my watches to be accurate and will alter them if they are just a few seconds out. With watches like this, with the analogue time not connected to the digital time, you have all the problems of hacking matching the second hand to the digital time and making sure the minute hand reflects the second hand, something again I am a bit OCD about. Trying to get the minute hand to be exact with the seconds can take a few attempts on analogues which means it can take minutes rather than seconds to get it just right to satisfy my OCD behaviour. Few problems therefore for me going forward with this watch and will require very little adjustment from me over the year. It will be interesting to see how much its timekeeping is affected when it is being worn a lot less than it has been. Mitch

trek watch brand

Hi Mitch, i have a similar prt-70 but not black coated and can totally agree with you regarding it's size and also the time keeping. Mine is running only 10sec + after 5 month without changing anything, just wow! I which Casio could bring out again a smaller ProTrek watch like this.

trek watch brand

Yeahh , can agree with you on this, the PRL Series are the Casio Ley's. Remember seeing ladies (in the older casio catalogues from 90's) wearing this kind of Baby ProTreks ;-)

How To Watch All Star Trek TV Shows In Timeline Order

Star trek 4 is “forever tainted” but simon pegg would love to do it, i’m glad voyager’s tom and b’elanna are no longer star trek's only successful romance.

  • Star Trek: Picard season 3's TNG reunion wowed fans with a reunited crew saving the Federation and defeating the Borg.
  • Some Star Trek legacy casts may still come back together, but other casts sadly can't reunite.
  • Hope remains for Star Trek: DS9 and J.J. Abrams' movie comebacks, but the loss of key actors makes full reunions impossible.

Star Trek: Picard season 3's reunion of Star Trek: The Next Generation 's actors sadly can't happen with 3 Star Trek casts. After Star Trek: Picard seasons 1 and 2 focused on new characters teaming up with Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), as well as Star Trek: Voyager 's Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), Star Trek: Picard season 3's showrunner, Terry Matalas, wanted to bring back the entire main cast of TNG . The result was Star Trek: Picard' s most acclaimed season, as the united crew of the USS Enterprise-D saved the United Federation of Planets and defeated the Borg once and for all.

Star Trek: Picard season 3's reassembled Star Trek: The Next Generation cast also delivered nostalgia while updating where each USS Enterprise-D member was in their lives decades after TNG ended. Naturally, Picard 's widely popular TNG reunion sparked fan interest in seeing other Star Trek legacy casts come back together. Some have the potential to: Star Trek: Voyager' s cast is still active and many have joined Kate Mulgrew's Admiral Kathryn Janeway in Netflix's animated Star Trek: Prodigy . Another crew fans want to see make a comeback is Star Trek: Enterprise . While some Star Trek legacy actors have moved on from Star Trek or from acting, there is still potential for them to return. Unfortunately, 3 Star Trek casts can't ever fully reassemble because of actors who have sadly passed away.

The Star Trek TV franchise has existed for 57 years and consists of 12 shows (and counting). Here's how to watch them all in timeline order.

3 Star Trek: The Original Series Cast

William shatner, george takei, and walter koenig have outlived their cast mates.

Star Trek: The Original Series ' cast first came together in 1966 and set the gold standard for what has become a nearly 60-year legacy of Star Trek television series and movies. Together, the original Star Trek cast played the iconic crew of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 for 3 seasons of TOS and 6 Star Trek movies. The last time the original crew shared the screen together was in 1991's Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Today, a full Star Trek: TOS reunion is impossible because most of the cast has passed away.

Star Trek's original cast is now the stuff of legend.

William Shatner is still going strong at 93 years old , and George Takei and Walter Koenig are thankfully still with us. However, DeForest Kelley passed away in 1999, followed by James Doohan in 2005. Majel Barrett-Roddenberry joined her late husband, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry , in 2008. We lost Leonard Nimoy in 2015, and Nichelle Nichols also passed away in 2022. Star Trek' s original cast is now the stuff of legend.

Although William Shatner hasn't portrayed Captain James T. Kirk since 1994's Star Trek Generations, the character lives on in a younger version played by Paul Wesley in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . In fact, Star Trek: The Original Series ' characters found a new lease on life in J.J. Abrams' rebooted Star Trek movies. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is gradually reintroducing the TOS cast, with only Dr. Leonard McCoy, Hikaru Sulu, and Pavel Chekov yet to be seen in Paramount+'s prequel.

Star Trek: The Original Series

2 Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Cast

Rene auberjonois and aron eisenberg have passed away.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's cast assembled in 1993 as the first spinoff of Star Trek: The Next Generation . Main characters like Michael Dorn's Lt. Commander Worf joined DS9 while others, like Terry Farrell's Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax, left the series. Still, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is heralded for having the most expansive and exotic cast of any Star Trek series , with numerous ancillary characters so well-written and so popular, that they were able to carry their own episodes.

Nicole de Boer joined Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 7 as Lt. Ezri Dax to replace Terry Farrell's Jadzia Dax, who was killed off when she left the show.

While Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is at the top of fans' lists for a comeback, a full cast reunion is now, sadly, impossible. In 2019, both Aron Eisenberg, who played Nog, and Rene Auberjonois, who played Constable Odo, passed away. We also lost Louise Fletcher, who portrayed the diabolical Kai Winn, in 2022. In addition, Avery Brooks, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine' s Captain Benjamin Sisko , has retired from acting and distanced himself from Star Trek , although hope remains he could be coaxed back to play Captain Sisko again.

Fans still hold out hope that the remaining Star Trek: Deep Space Nine cast can come back.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's 2019 retrospective documentary, What We Left Behind , reassembled the show's writing team to conjecture what DS9 season 8 could be like. Their ideas brought back everyone, including Nog, Odo, and Captain Sisko. Unfortunately, such a reunion can't happen today . However, fans still hold out hope that the remaining Star Trek: Deep Space Nine cast can come back, be it in a live-action event or in animation.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

1 j.j. abrams’ star trek movie cast, rip anton yelchin.

J.J. Abrams achieved a miracle when he cast Star Trek (2009) . Conventional wisdom held that it would be impossible to find actors to embody and replace William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and the cast of Star Trek: The Original Series . With ingenious casting choices, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, and Star Trek (2009)'s cast brought new life, youth, and vitality to the iconic crew of the Starship Enterprise . Abrams' Star Trek cast matured into their roles in the sequels, 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness and 2016's Star Trek Beyond.

Simon Pegg wants to return for Star Trek 4, but a USS Enterprise reunion wouldn't be the same after the tragic loss of Anton Yelchin.

Nearly a decade after Star Trek Beyond left theaters, audiences and the actors still hope Star Trek 4 can bring one more voyage of the USS Enterprise. Tragically, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek cast will never be complete again. In 2016, Anton Yelchin lost his life in a terrible accident. Star Trek Beyond was dedicated to Yelchin's memory , as well as to Leonard Nimoy, who passed away the previous year. Sofia Boutella's Jaylah is a natural replacement for Ensign Chekov, who won't be recast, but Star Trek 4 , if it happens, will always be missing one of its key crew members.

Watch Review: Casio Pro Trek Pendleton Collaboration

trek watch brand

Measuring an eye-watering 51.5mm across and 51.6mm lug-to-lug, this watch is verifiably enormous, but as you can see, it doesn’t overwhelm the wrist nearly as much as you’d expect. Part of this is short, angled lugs, which do their very best to hug the wrist, part of it is the sloped city bezel, and part is the fact that when you take away the extra size from the pushers and case shapes, you’re left with a dial that doesn’t look that big because it’s so full (as opposed to some, thin bezeled dress watch that wears 4mm larger than it is). That’s not to say that it’s going to sit well on smaller wrists, but rather that it may not be as gargantuan as you’d expect.

trek watch brand

The part you can’t see, that I can only tell you about, that my son might have been able to express if he weren’t hampered by his current developmental stage, is that the watch is light as a feather, weighing just 62g. For reference, a steel Rolex Daytona weighs about 150g and the Oris Aqiuis Date Calibre 400 weighs about 165g. You can thank the bio-based resin construction (i.e., plastic from renewable resources) for the case’s weight; presumably the gray ion-plated steel bezel and the mineral crystal together weigh about as much as the rest of the case. While the form is identical to other models in this line, this special edition gets a two-tone brown case with a bronze-tone crown, though those elements aren’t what stands out. Like those other models, it sports 100m of water resistance.

trek watch brand

The Pendleton Collaboration model’s strap is made from recycled PET plastics and features a classic Pendelton pattern that evokes images of the American Southwest. Unfortunately, it’s nowhere near as soft as the textile company’s blankets. Getting a snug fit requires a bit of force, and the strap doesn’t conform very well in any case. This has been my experience with almost all recycled straps (such as the #tide straps used by many brands), which tend to be stiff and rough. I wore this watch on humid summer days, in the ocean, and in a creek, and the strap didn’t give much. The strap isn’t painful or abrasive, it’s just not as comfortable as a traditional textile (or leather or rubber) strap might be. Unfortunately, the lugs are 23mm, so strap swaps will be a challenge for most.

trek watch brand

The Casio Pro Trek Pendleton dial remains quite legible despite everything that’s going on. The main dial is a deep gray with a glossy Pendleton design printed in the middle; the design can disappear in the wrong light but will usually show itself more often than not. Despite the busy dial and design, the watch does use Casio’s Tough Solar technology to keep charged. At 10 o’clock is a Pendleton-themed function indicator with a multi-colored hand, which is echoed in the seconds hand. The hour and minute hand, along with the printed hour numerals feature Casio’s Neobrite lume, and the watch has a small backup light activated by the small button between the 6 o’clock lugs. The lume is certainly adequate, though I’m sure if you were properly in the wilderness, you’d be happy to have the backup light. The digital display manages many of the non-time functions, including the date display, and also features a backlight. In fact, the light can be set to turn on automatically when the watch is moved to be read (from parallel to a greater than 40° angle) but won’t turn on if you’re looking at it in bright light. I guess this is a good time to tell you there’s a power-saving mode, too.

trek watch brand

The functionality of this watch is honestly overwhelming. Even the most daring outdoorsman probably wouldn’t need everything. Using Casio’s Triple Sensor, the watch’s most notable functions are a barometer, thermometer, and compass. Beyond those, it has an altimeter (based on the barometer readings), stopwatch, timer, alarm (five of them!), and world time functions. I am not going to go into every single detail about all of these functions—you’ve already been reading long enough. You should know a couple of things, though. All the functions (and their many subfunctions) are operated through the four pushers and crown. While many of the functions are fairly straightforward, some are more complicated to set and use, and some require calibration and recalibration. For instance, the altimeter wasn’t accurate when I took a reading outside my house, but the watch allows you to manually adjust it as needed (this would be useful at the start of a hike). The barometer and thermometer had similar issues (though I can’t understand the latter’s error). I imagine most people would use this not every day, but for specific outings, and as such, they’d likely want to calibrate the sensors each time.

Up until now Trek ’s gravel lineup has been, well, a little lonely, comprised of just the Checkpoint. That bike is a generalist, something that an experienced rider can put big miles on and that a novice can still find approachable and easy to ride. But a one-size-fits-all approach inevitably means some people get left out.

While gravel was once mainly an adventure minded pursuit, the discipline has matured rapidly, and speed is now atop the minds of many, especially as gravel continues to overtake road racing in availability and popularity. Gravel is now where the fast riders are getting their fix, and they want a bike to match. Trek has finally followed many other brands in releasing a second gravel model, one that is all about speed and racing. It’s called the Checkmate, and it lives up to the race-focused billing.

Trek Checkmate Review

Quick hits: Seven things to know about the new Trek Checkmate

  • The Checkmate is a new performance gravel bike optimized for racing.
  • A Checkmate SLR 9 is Trek’s lightest gravel bike yet, a massive 1-pound lighter than an equivalent Checkpoint SLR 9.
  • Includes mounts for bolt-on frame bags on the inside edge of the frame.
  • Trek claims the Checkmate is 5 minutes and 54 seconds faster than the Checkpoint SLR at Unbound Gravel 200 at 200 watts, or 38 seconds per hour faster.
  • Max tire clearance: 700c x 45 mm.
  • Handling is optimized for the type of gravel racing found at Unbound Gravel, with straight lines and fast dirt.

Trek Checkmate Review

Checkmate Details

It was only a matter of time before Trek released a new gravel bike, especially because it has a gravel team, Trek-Driftless, that needs to be able to compete in the increasingly competitive gravel circuit. Trek now falls in line with the numerous other brands pursuing the go-fast gravel crowd — BMC, Canyon, Cervelo, and 3T to name a few. As you’d expect, that means there’s a whole lot of optimization for speed in this new bike.

The major nod to speed comes from the tube shapes, which are adapted from the newest generation Trek Madone released earlier this summer . The thing that might throw you off, however, is that the tube shapes don’t at all look aero — not in the way we’ve been trained to expect at least. The head tube area is narrowed like other aero bikes, but the square downtube is decidedly not aero-looking. Luckily the wind doesn’t care what you or I think about aerodynamic shapes, and Trek’s testing shows faster times with these tube shapes. As we’ll get to later, Trek has definitely done something right here in the speed department.

Trek Checkmate Review

Trek’s response to the fact that the Checkmate has less than standard looking aero tube shapes is that the frame is designed as part of a system alongside the Bontrager Aeolus 37V wheels and optimized around a 38 to 40 mm wide tire. The square downtube promotes the smooth transition of air from the front of the bike to the rear, channeling air around the entire bike in the most seamless way rather than considering each tube shape in isolation.

As those familiar with Trek might have been able to guess, the Checkmate gets an updated version of Trek’s IsoSpeed rear decoupler shock absorption system, which works to isolate the seatpost from the rest of the frame. The result is a bike that feels much smoother when riding seated than without it. It’s worked well on other Trek models for over a decade at this point, and it continues to work well for gravel in the Checkmate.

Trek Checkmate Review

Also pulled over from the new 8th generation Trek Madone is the one-piece carbon handlebar-stem. Like that squared-off downtube, the handlebar has a blunt shape, and it has a 3 cm flare from the hoods to the drops. There’s also a very slight outsweep. All in, it’s a very aggressive bar for gravel, one that suits the go-fast sensibilities of the new bike.

As a package, Trek claims the new bike is 5 minutes and 54 seconds faster than the outgoing Checkpoint SLR when ridden at 200 watts over Unbound 200. That translates to about 38 seconds per hour faster if you’re not trying to mix it up with the pros.

Trek Checkmate Review

But beyond aerodynamics, the other big story of this bike is weight, or lack thereof. Trek says the new Checkmate SLR 9 weighs 1 pound less than an equivalent Checkpoint SLR 9, thanks in part to the use of Trek’s top-level 800-Series OCLV Carbon. My size medium test bike weighed in at 7.53kg (16.60lbs) without pedals or bottle cages, making it easily one of the lightest gravel bikes I’ve ever tested.

Checkmate geometry

Trek offers the Checkmate in six sizes, XS to XL, a change from the purely numeric sizing of the previous Checkpoint.

Long and low might dominate the gravel space, but Trek is actually turning things back on the Checkpoint’s geometry. Compared to the previous Checkpoint SLR, the new Checkmate is slightly shorter in the reach department, but with similar stack heights size over size. In short, if you’re coming from the previous-generation Checkpoint, you’ll likely need to use a slightly longer stem than before to match your reach measurements.

Trek Checkmate Review

Handling geometry has been optimized for straight-line speed as well. The big news here is that the bike is shorter front to back, all in the name of making it more nimble feeling. So how is it optimized for straight-line speed? Mostly with a low, low, low 80 mm bottom bracket drop across all sizes.

On that note, Trek has opted to use just one fork rake offset across all sizes. The result is trail figures that range from a slack-feeling 70 mm on small sizes and a relatively quick 62 mm on the largest sizes.

Checkmate builds, specs, and pricing

The Trek Checkmate isn’t designed to be a generalist gravel bike, and its build range reflects that. There’s just one top-end SLR-grade carbon frame and two builds in total, one with SRAM Force and the other with SRAM Red, all with Trek’s new carbon bar/stem cockpit. Trek also offers a frameset option.

The Checkmate SLR 7 AXS with Force costs $8,299.99 USD / £8,500.00 / €8,999.00 / $10,999.99 AUD, while the SLR 9 AXS with Red costs $11,999.99 USD / £10,000.00 / €10,999.00 / $17,999.99 AUD. The Frameset is $3,999.99 USD.

Trek Checkmate Review

While there are just the two builds and four colorways, Trek also offers its ProjectOne customization program, allowing for component adjustments as well as custom paint. I was able to arrive at the exact fit I wanted by choosing 170mm crank arms as well as the cockpit option that worked for me, 39mm wide at the hoods, widening out to 42mm in the drops, with an 80mm stem. If you’re going to spend this much on a bike, you may as well have it built up with the exact spec you want rather than just taking whatever version happens to be in stock.

There are also custom paint options for the Checkmate including the new ICON Raw Lithos paint program available specifically on the Checkmate.

Specification as tested

Trek Checkmate Review

Trek Checkmate SLR 9 AXS in size medium; SRAM RED eTap AXS 1x Groupset (42T chainring, 10-46T cassette); Bontrager Aeolus 37V wheels; Bontrager Girona RSL 38 mm tires; Bontrage Aeolus RSL saddle; Trek integrated cockpit.

Gravel bikes have come a long way in a short time, and the Checkmate may demonstrate that better than any bike. It’s ridiculously light and fast, and, honestly, I’m tempted to leave the review at that. But, there’s more to say.

I was able to recreate my road bike position on this bike, and when I got on, it just felt right to my roadie sensibilities. Pretty soon I was eating up miles at a fast clip. For fast, non-technical gravel routes, the Checkmate is the perfect tool.

Trek Checkmate Review

As I hit the more technical gravel portions of my usual test route, the Checkmate’s optimization for fast, straight roads was most evident, resulting in some overrunning turns and fishtailing rather than smooth cornering. I was still having fun though, mind you. It feels wonderful on road descents, plus its aero prowess comes to the forefront on descents as it picks up speed rapidly.

Trek does a wonderful job with the small details on this bike, one of my favorite being the fastening system for the seatpost. While the bolt to tighten a seatpost can often be finicky, or made in a way that the bolt and clamp system can fall into the frame itself, this one stays securely in place, and is accessed through a little door held securely shut by a magnet. The seatpost also makes saddle adjustments quite easy, which is far from the norm with seatposts unfortunately.

Trek Checkmate Review

One small gripe I found with this bike is similar to one I have with the Domane in that my thighs are prone to rubbing against the top tube because the top tube–seat tube junction where the IsoSpeed decoupler is located is a little chunky. That said, it’s not a huge annoyance, and I’m glad to have IsoSpeed on this bike.

I like the number of mounting positions for bottle cages and bags inside the main triangle. Some will lament the lack of internal downtube storage, a feature increasingly found on gravel bikes, but it’s really not something I’ve missed that much, and the omission of downtube storage makes sense because this bike’s mission is pretty squarely on going fast and trimming out any features that add unneeded weight and complexity. Trek has created an elegant frame bag option for the bike as well to access mid-ride necessities like food.

Trek Checkmate Review

As I said before, it’s an incredibly light bike, helping it feel more like a performance road bike. The integrated aero cockpit borrowed from the Madone aero road bike adds to the performance road feel. I’m not completely sold on the super-narrow handlebar concept being pushed for fast gravel bikes nowadays, meant to put riders in the most aero position possible. However, through Trek’s ProjectOne bike customization program I was able to opt for the 39mm bar width rather than 37mm. I like the fit of these bars quite a bit. They’re comfortable enough in the tops, though I didn’t find myself spending much time there since I was so preoccupied with riding fast. And I love the shape of the drops with a slight flare, just enough for extra control on descents, but not more than you need for a bike that is meant for faster, less technical terrain.

I could easily see this bike being my one-bike option. If you’re not big on adventure riding and instead prioritize fast rides, this bike allows you to add more speed to the off-road portions of your rides, while still feeling plenty fast on-road. A second wheelset could easily transform it into a reasonably capable road bike.

Trek Checkmate Review

Trek’s entry to the fast-gravel segment is a win in my book. It doesn’t quite put the aero gravel competition in checkmate, but they’ve definitely been put on notice.
