It could be argued that the Super Bowl has surpassed the World Series as the ultimate sports event, but there are still plenty of sports fans who would gladly choose World Series tickets over Super Bowl tickets. And there is a good reason for that – a single football game just cannot match the drama and unpredictability of a potential seven-game baseball series.

For more than a century, the Series has matched the champion of the American League against the champion of the National League, and now there’s a new twist with the winner of the Baseball All-Star Game earning home field advantage for the Baseball Series.

Quite a bit has changed since the first modern World Series in 1903, when Boston beat Pittsburgh in a best-of-nine series that ended with a strikeout of the great Honus Wagner. Amazingly, there was no 1904 Series because NL champion New York refused to face the “inferior” AL champion Boston. And then there was the infamous 1919 “Black Sox” scandal, when several key players on the Chicago team allegedly threw the Baseball Series. There were actually a few tie games in the early World Series, and it is believed some of those early championships were even rigged to go up to nine games because players shared in the ticket receipts.

Thankfully there are no problems like that now; just the problem of finding tickets. That’s why many fans prefer to purchase complete, worry-free World Series travel packages with game tickets, hotel accommodations and airfare from Esoteric Sports.

You can bet that all the Boston Red Sox fans who had World Series tickets in 2004 will never forget the incredible experience of finally watching their team break the curse and bring home a championship, especially when they can remind New York fans about the remarkable Championship Series of that year. That Boston win certainly gave some hope to the tortured Chicago fans that their day might finally come. No matter what team you’ll be rooting for, don’t miss the opportunity to experience this classic event in person – book your Baseball Series travel package with Esoteric Sports today!

Brave New World Series

What it was like to be one of the only mlb spectators in 2020.

World Series Rays Dodgers Baseball

Tickets for each of these series were sold in “pods” of four, both in the primary market and on the secondary market. You could not break up the pod by, for instance, unloading two tickets. So the first order of business was organizing a pod of four people who have been behaving, and would behave, responsibly.

Major League Baseball and the stewards of Globe Life Field did a terrific job of spacing out fans, after limiting capacity to 25 percent of the roughly 40,000 that Globe Life Field can hold. Each pod of four was separated horizontally by at least four seats from any other pod, with at least a row of seats separating the pods vertically. It was in this environment that I became one of the first 10,000 people to watch a live Major League Baseball game in 2020, which doubled as the first game at which fans were allowed into Globe Life Field, when the Dodgers and Braves played Game 1 of the NLCS.

Those factors imposed on seating certainly went into the calculus of how to populate a pod of four. I needed people who were adaptable if we needed to change our environment — people who could bob and weave in case our pod was placed near misbehaving pods; people who could walk to the far side of the facility to find the right combination of food and drink; and people who were not in a position to take it out on me if the whole experience proved to be a disaster (e.g. taking a client would have been risky). Fortunately, my pod recruiting efforts were successful.

With the roof open on a gorgeous night in Texas and a pitching matchup of Max Fried versus Walker Buehler, the overriding feeling upon the first pitch was one of surreality, mixed with an adult dose of gratitude to be able to experience such a scene. It was a bit like seeing a World Series Game in 1910, and for baseball purists like me it provided an opportunity to enjoy the artistry of the game without all the gimmicks used to stir up the local fan base. The soundtrack of the game was very much the natural sounds of baseball, with occasional noise from the pods and a din of canned crowd noise that was not nearly as perceptible in-venue as it is on TV or radio.

The soundtrack of the game was very much the natural sounds of baseball, with occasional noise from the pods, and a din of canned crowd noise that was not nearly as perceptible in-venue as it is on TV or radio.

For this game, the Dodgers were the designated home team and Dodgers fans clearly outnumbered Braves fans. There were some oddities I think could be dispensed with when playing these sorts of games on a neutral field. For instance, longtime Texas Rangers stadium announcer Chuck Morgan — working from his state-of-the-art, transparent booth behind home plate — introduced the Dodgers by saying “Ladies and gentlemen, your Los Angeles Dodgers!” The stadium organist tried to get into the act as well by at one point playing “Touch Me” by The Doors, something that is not in the usual repertoire of a Texas Rangers organist.

The cooperation of the lucky 10,000 fans was uplifting. For the most part, everyone behaved, though there were two pods of Braves fans about eight rows in front of my pod that would run back and forth, masks off, high-fiving each other. Whatever your views on Globe Life Field’s mask-wearing policy, is it not possible to be grateful that you are one of 10,000 people able to watch a live baseball game, let alone one of the quality of the Dodgers versus the Braves, and obey the house rules for several hours? This being 2020, there were a few verbal grenades hurled back and forth to/from those two pods, and the ushers intervened several times to tell them to put on their masks. But other than that, it was a comfortable environment.

travel sports world series

The common areas and passageways at Globe Life Field are vast, and so there was no crowding. Since this was Day One for everyone, there was great curiosity as to which concession stands would be open and what they would be serving. The facility is configured so that you can do a complete lap around the stadium — thus, all possible vendors were accessible and there was old-school sharing of information. “Hey where did you get that brisket sausage?” (Yes, brisket sausage was available). “Where did those cans of Stella Artois come from?” (Answer: “The little kiosk even with first base.”) The condiments for any food were pre-packaged and the variety of main course (if such a term can be applied to ballpark food) options was way more than I thought it would be, given the 25 percent limit on attendance. I was also surprised that more people chose to eat at the field, sight unseen, than not.

There are other discoveries that come from being in any sports facility for the first time. Corey Seager hit a hard shot to third and reached first base, as various pods looked to see where the official scorer’s verdict would be shown: hit or error? It appeared on the center field screen (a hit). And without being too graphic about this particular scene, the restrooms — never having been used — were immaculate. By contrast, the last postseason MLB game I had attended was at Wrigley Field, where fans have been urinating for over 100 years. At Globe Life Field, that there were two attendants in each restroom continuously cleaning the facilities helped reassure those in attendance that their safety concerns were being addressed.

Alive and Vibrant Again

My experience would be replicated two weeks later when I had several friends from Hawaii — ardent Dodger fans — announce that they would be traveling from Honolulu for World Series Games 3–5 and invited me to join them for what became the legendary Game 4 between the Dodgers and the Tampa Bay Rays. My comfort level in their pod was certainly boosted by the fact that they had been COVID-tested several times in the prior week, and would be again on the morning of the game in order to be able to show a negative test to get back into Hawaii. Such are the requirements of sports-related travel these days.

Globe Life Field again provided an ideal environment. This time, there was an effort to give a home field vibe to the Rays for Game 4, with Morgan bellowing: “Raise up for your Tampa Bay Rays!” Probably 80 percent of the crowd had a reaction similar to Humphrey Bogart’s line about Paris in the movie “Casablanca:” “They aren’t particularly my Tampa Bay Rays.” There was also a message on the large screen from the Clearwater (Florida) Police Department, as well as scenes from a watch party in Tampa. Both the Rays’ players and the crowd seemed unmoved by these gestures, and their utility can certainly be questioned.

There were no confrontations among pods at this game, although the ushers were again busy with two pods of Rays’ fans who tried to get away with the old mask-around-the-neck trick which, unless you had a recent tracheotomy, does not seem to serve the intended purpose.

There were no confrontations among pods at this game, although the ushers were once again busy with two pods of Rays’ fans who tried to get away with the old mask-around-the-neck trick which, unless you had a recent tracheotomy, does not seem to serve the intended purpose.

I commend Major League Baseball for the way it orchestrated the postseason competition. And to the architects and operators of Globe Life Field, bravo! Every competition held in these times gives the stewards of sport a little bit more information about how these things can be done safely and Globe Life Field is a facility fit for this unique phase of the human experience — once Justin Turner’s locker is fumigated, of course.

As for that memorable Game 4, the competition itself was remarkable, and there was one moment that made my two forays to Arlington worthwhile. As the Rays were staging their stirring comeback in the bottom of the ninth, every pod — Rays fans and Dodgers fans alike — was on its feet. The increased decibel level was not the result of canned noise from a loudspeaker but rather the type of in-person excitement you can only hear and feel by being there. After more than seven months of not experiencing that feeling, I appreciated it all the more. At the end of the World Series, Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw said the 25 percent crowd was enough to give the players a feeling of playing in front of a real crowd again. And in that moment in the ninth, the place — and the sports world — seemed alive and vibrant.

Testimonials

Thanks again for the hard work this weekend. Despite the tough loss to the Bulldogs yesterday in the Championship, we really enjoyed our first Wolves tournament. The personal attention to the fields was noted by all. Can’t wait to see you guys again at Flat Rock in June.

I appreciate all the help you have given us this season. I enjoy your tourneys. Nice job!

I just wanted to drop a quick note to thank you for the quality of the umpires at our recent Wolves Tournament in Farmington Hills. My sons play 10U and 12U ball, and the boys had a great time. There was one crew in particular that stands out. They were truly the best tandem I have ever seen in youth baseball. These two umpires made all the right calls, but that really has little to do with why I’m sending this note. They made the game fun for the boys by interacting with them with a great deal of humor and enthusiasm, as well as offering suggestions during the games. They dealt with the parents and coaches the same way, and it made it a great experience for everyone. They clearly enjoyed what they were doing, and that sense of joy infused the games.

As we prepared for the playoff game, one of those umpires came over and chatted with the 10U boys. The boys asked if he would be calling their upcoming game, and he teased them a bit and said he wasn’t sure where he’d be working. They literally begged him to call their game, and I heard a one say that he was “the best umpire ever,” and others chimed in to agree.

I would bet that if all umpires took the same approach and made baseball fun while making the right calls, there would be far more kids playing baseball these days.

We came to the USA Travel Sports World Series you guys put on last year in Sylvania and loved it.

Thank you for a well run tournament in Flat Rock. My team and their families had a great weekend. Well organized and run.

Great tournament fellas! We will be back!

I just wanted to touch base with both of you about our Wolves Tournament experience. Our 13u team participated in 3 Wolves Tournament weekends this year. Besides the unusual foul weather during our Mid-May event, we enjoyed our experience during the 3 events. The competition was great, the umpires were fantastic each and every game. We were lucky enough to have umpire Troy for 5 of our games and he was fantastic!

The facilities were top notch (Founders and Flat Rock). I will certainly recommend your tournaments in the future.

I am coach of the 16U team. We made it to championship game. You guys run a great tournament, there is absolutely nothing I or anyone else could complain about. The umpires were great and fair, there were enough balls, the facilities were great and communication and access to the schedules was simple. Thank you.

Although our results weren’t what we hoped, I wanted to let you know that our experience at this weekend’ tournament was terrific. The fields were great, umpires solid and friendly and just run well overall.

We wanted a tournament with good competition and not ultra elite teams. You both indicated this was the case and you were absolutely right. We were in every game and had a chance to win them all.

When we determine our tournament schedule for next year, we will strongly consider Wolves Tournaments.

My team and their families all want to compliment you and your staff on a great tournament in Flat Rock this past weekend.

Just a quick message to say you guys do a nice job with your tournaments. I’m sure we will see you again in the future.

Thank you so much for clean bathrooms at Founders Park in Farmington Hills ! My two sons play travel baseball all summer long and I’m can appreciate the effort you guys make.

I have two grandsons that play baseball in your tournaments. I also have a son that played in tournaments years ago. These are the nicest fields I have ever been at.

I’m emailing you to complement on the excellent umpires you have at your tournament. My son is 9u and the umpires took the time to explain the calls they made which helped these players enjoy the game.

Nationals prepare to celebrate five-year anniversary of World Series title

travel sports world series

Four years after the coronavirus pandemic denied the Washington Nationals and their fans a proper, season-long victory lap following the franchise’s first World Series title, the team is leaning into its celebration of its 2019 championship with the Houston Astros in town for a three-game series beginning Friday.

“The fans, they’re the ones that really got cheated,” Nationals Manager Dave Martinez said toward the end of Washington’s pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign, which began with a flag-raising ceremony at an empty Nationals Park before a loss to the New York Yankees and ended with the Nationals, who wore gold-trimmed uniforms all season, eliminated from playoff contention. “Hopefully moving forward … we do something special for them, whether we bring all the guys back, the guys that are here, whatever.”

More than a dozen players and coaches from Washington’s World Series-winning roster are scheduled to return for this weekend’s festivities, which include fireworks and giveaways. The guest list, which is subject to change, includes former Nationals Brian Dozier, Adam Eaton, Javy Guerra, Bob Henley, Howie Kendrick, Aníbal Sánchez, Kurt Suzuki and Ryan Zimmerman, as well as current players and coaches Henry Blanco, Patrick Corbin, Sean Doolittle, Dave Martinez, Octavio Martinez, Gerardo Parra, Tanner Rainey and Victor Robles.

(If the returning players have half as much fun together as they did re-watching Game 7 of the 2019 World Series on a public Zoom call in the early stages of the pandemic, it should be a good time.)

Outside of the active players from Washington’s 2019 squad who now play for other MLB teams, including Yan Gomes, Daniel Hudson, Anthony Rendon, Max Scherzer, Juan Soto, Michael A. Taylor and Trea Turner, the most conspicuous name not scheduled to return is 2019 World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg, who recently retired after a 13-year career cut short by injuries. Matt Adams couldn’t make the trip because he’s looking to extend his career in the Mexican league, where he homered in his first game last week. Fernando Rodney also will be missed.

Friday night’s series opener against the Astros — the sign-stealing squad Washington vanquished in the World Series — will be followed by a fireworks show featuring “2019 world champion music.” Expect to hear Pedro Capó’s reggaeton hit “Calma” and “Baby Shark,” both of which figured prominently in the Nationals’ World Series run, throughout the weekend.

The first 20,000 fans at Saturday’s 4:05 p.m. game will receive a 2019 World Series replica ring . The keepsake isn’t as inspired as the Class A Staten Island Yankees scheduling a mini trash can giveaway to coincide with a visit from the Astros’ affiliate in 2020, but the rings, which were on display at the Nationals’ ballpark tour for media members last month, do look nice. No word on whether Oscar the Grouch will make an appearance.

Oscar the Grouch is in attendance tonight at Nationals Park with the Astros in town. pic.twitter.com/aI3B93O48L — Blake Finney (@FinneyBlake) May 14, 2022

Saturday also will feature a pair of pregame question-and-answer sessions with players from the 2019 team. Nationals radio play-by-play man Charlie Slowes will moderate a panel for season plan holders featuring World Series champions on Washington’s current roster, while MASN TV voice Bob Carpenter will moderate a panel featuring visiting Nationals alumni, some of whom will join the TV and radio broadcasts Saturday and Sunday. (In a promotional video teasing his return to D.C., Dozier vowed to keep his shirt on. Don’t count on it .)

On Sunday, the first 8,000 fans 12 and under will receive a viewfinder toy featuring images from the 2019 World Series run. Players will sign autographs at the top of the Nationals’ dugout for fans who obtain a free voucher, which will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at Section 103. Gates open for all fans at 12:15.

The Astros and Nationals have followed very different paths since Kendrick doinked the go-ahead home run off the foul pole in Washington’s Game 7 triumph in Houston. While the Astros have been to the playoffs in each of the past four years and won the World Series in 2022, the Nationals, who embarked on a rebuild by trading away Scherzer, Turner and Soto at the deadline in 2021 and 2022, have averaged 98 losses over the past three seasons. The five-year anniversary of the 2019 World Series title is worth celebrating, but the names from that team who won’t be in the lineup this weekend provide a painful reminder of what might have been.

Once there, sign up for the Nations Cup – racing to represent your home country or territory – and/or the Manufacturers Cup, racing for your favorite manufacturer.

First up from April 17 are the Online Qualifiers for the Nations Cup: six rounds played out over three weeks. From Wednesday, 8 May the action switches to the Manufacturers Cup, similarly with three weeks and six rounds of Online Qualifiers.

At the end of the Online Qualifiers, the top players will be selected to attend the live events. In a change to the format for 2024, three live Gran Turismo World Series Rounds will lead into the end-of-season World Finals.

The calendar for the Gran Turismo World Series 2024 live events is as follows:

  • Round 1 – Montreal, Canada | Saturday, 6 July
  • Round 2 – Prague, Czechia | Saturday, August 10
  • Round 3 – Tokyo, Japan | Saturday, September 28
  • World Finals – Date and location to be announced

Fans unable to attend the live events won’t miss any of the action, with each round set to be broadcast live on https://www.gran-turismo.com/world/live/ and https://www.youtube.com/@GRANTURISMOTV .

In the Nations Cup, the top 12 players (five from the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region; two each from the Central & South America, North America and Asia regions; and one from the Oceania region) will be invited to compete in all four live events. With the 2024 Nations Cup reverting to an individual competition, the 12 competitors will battle at all three Gran Turismo World Series Rounds and the World Finals. Points accumulated at each round will determine the overall 2024 World Champion.

The Manufacturers Cup remains a team competition, but with a new twist for 2024. World Series partners Toyota Gazoo Racing, Mazda and Genesis are guaranteed a starting spot at each live event. The other top manufacturers from the Online Qualifiers ranking will create a total field of 12. In the Gran Turismo World Series Rounds 1-3, each manufacturer will be represented by their top driver from the corresponding region to where the event is hosted – Americas in Montreal, EMEA in Prague and Asia-Oceania in Tokyo. For the World Finals, the three drivers per team will be united to compete together. Again, points will be cumulative to decide the World Champions.

The Gran Turismo World Series began in 2018, and 2024 is the seventh season of the ultra-competitive SIM racing championships. In 2023, a thrilling World Finals played out before a lively audience in Barcelona.

It was an unexpected, and first-ever, win for Team Nissan in the Manufacturers Cup with Ryota Kokubun (JPN), Mehdi Hafidi (FRA) and Mateo Estevez (ARG) taking home the trophy. Team Mercedes-AMG and Team Genesis completed the podium.

In the Nations Cup, Team Spain was dominant in front of their enthusiastic and very vocal home crowd. The experienced Coque López and Jose Serrano were joined in the team by exciting, young newcomer Pol Urra to record an impressive win ahead of Team Japan and Team Brazil.

Producer of the Gran Turismo series. “We were keen to increase the number of live events for 2024 and so I am excited about the new format we have. Deciding the competitors for all events at an early stage will give fans a real opportunity to get to know our talented drivers and follow them through the season. We shall be at some great venues and so are looking forward to more events with the same fantastic atmosphere we had in Barcelona last year and, of course, more excellent racing.”

Michelin, Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR), Genesis, Mazda, Brembo and Fanatec continue their support as official partners of the Gran Turismo World Series in 2024.

The Gran Turismo World Series is open to all players with any PS Plus membership for the online rounds through the ‘Sport’ mode in Gran Turismo 7. The Online Qualifiers are organized into a League format with three brackets determined by Driver Ratings, so that players compete in races against opponents of a similar level. Qualification for the live events is subject to terms and conditions which players can read and accept in game.

* Internet connection and PS Plus membership required for entry
