Lethem Rodeo

The origins of Rodeo dates back to the 1960s at Pirara during the dry season when all ranchers got together to round up their cattle. Rounding up is the process whereby all cattle are brought to the corral for headcount, branding and general inspection. The small competition among ranchers grew over time to become the biggest attraction in the region. It is now held at its permanent home, the RRR ground.

View of Kaieteur Falls, Guyana

Trek through wildlife-rich rainforest to Guyana’s most famous waterfalls.

You travel by foot and by canoe as you journey to Kaieteur Falls, the world’s highest single-drop waterfall in the world, 5 times the height of the Niagara Falls.

After a city tour, we leave civilisation and enter the Guyana’s beautiful rainforest.

By walking along small jungle trails and over tree trunk bridges, you get a real feeling of adventure and feel as close to lush and green nature as you can get.

The lucky ones amongst you might even return home having seen a Jaguar.

Full Itinerary

Day 1: arrive in guyana. georgetown, transfer to hotel.

Arrival in Georgetown.

Pick up and transfer to Cara Lodge, a 150-year-old heritage building converted into a beautiful small hotel.

Day 2: City tour, hotel (B)

Georgetown the chief port, capital and largest city of Guyana is situated on the right Bank of the Demerara River Estuary.

It was chosen as a site for a fort to guard the early Dutch settlements of the Demerara River. The city of Georgetown was designed largely by the Dutch and is laid out in a rectangular pattern with wide tree lined avenues and irrigation canals that criss-cross the city.

Most of the buildings in the city are wooden with unique architecture dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

Our guide will guide us around Bourda Market, the largest of the four markets in Georgetown.  This will be an exciting opportunity to see what is on sale, from food to haberdashery – our guide will make us familiar with the local fruits and vegetables unique in this part of the world.

We then continue on our tour of the city of Georgetown with an experienced guide who will give you all the history, traditions and facts.

On this mix of vehicle and walking tour we will see many of Georgetown’s historic buildings and will visit the Botanical Gardens, home to an extensive collection of tropical flora and the endangered West Indian Manatees. We will visit the National Museum and the Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology, which houses a wonderful collection of artefacts to bring the Guyanese history and lifestyle to life.

After our city tour, we will head over to a local restaurant for lunch.

Optional Add on (extra cost): Historical River Tour

We will slowly cruise along and across the Demerara River while your guide will give a brief history of the famous buildings along the waterfront. As the sun sets over the river, we will have a cold drink and some snacks (or cutters as the Guyanese call them).

Day 3: 4x4 and canoe to Amatuk Falls, camp (B,L,D)

It is an early start as you depart Georgetown at 6.30am for an 8 hour journey inland. Once we pass the town of Linden, we see nothing but beautiful verdant rainforest and rolling hills.

We will reach the busy gold-mining town of Mahdia, and on to Pamela Landing.

This is where we meet our boat for a final 2 ½ hours journey to Amatuk, a beautiful island of white sand. The stunning 50m high Amatuk Falls are close to the camp where we set up for the night.

The river is suitable for swimming and what better way to freshen up before dinner!

Overnight in hammocks at Camp Amatuk.

Day 4: Boat trip to Waratuk Falls, camp (B,L,D)

Today you set off by foot as adventure awaits, with some swimming across creeks and walking across jungle bridges (tree trunks)! A short boat-ride and you arrive at Waratuk where you will either trek for 4hrs if you like a bit more challenge, or transfer to another boat for an hour’s boat ride to Tukiet.

The impressive Ibini mountain range towers over us as we make our way to Tukiet, which lies at the foot of the Kaieteur Falls.

Here we will be treated to a stunning view of the gorge and – you guessed it – a possible dip in the river.

Overnight at Tukiet Guesthouse in hammocks.

Day 5: Hike to Tukiet and Kaieteur, guest house (B,L,D)

Today get ready for the big challenge! It’s a four hour climb to the top of what (at least in part) the locals call the ‘O my God’ mountain. Did you say you liked challenges?

There is some scrambling involved to reach the top, but the sense of achievement on taking in that view from the top, will make up for all hardship.

Here you have arrived at the mighty Kaieteur Falls, the highest single-drop waterfalls in the world.

Overnight at Kaieteur Guest House, in hammocks.

Day 6: Kaieteur Falls, guest house (B,L,D)

This morning we explore the Kaieteur Park and of course take advantage of the many excellent photo opportunities, too.

Those with a bit of patience might get a glimpse of the beautiful but poisonous ‘golden frog’ and we will see to spot the brightly coloured, orange ‘Cock-of-the-rock’.

Our guide will be helping us spot as much as possible and draw attention to the unique flora around.

Day 7: Return to Georgetown, hotel (B,L)

After another night at the top of the Kaieteur, it is time to say our farewell.

We return on a small aircraft and hope to get ourou get a final, farewell view of the Kaieteur Falls from the air – saying Goodbye to the gorge we campedat only a few nights ago and the awe-inspiring expanse of rainforest and rivers.

Overnight at Cara Lodge.

Optional (at extra cost) evening tour.

Georgetown’s Seawall comes alive as families, courting couples and friends promenade along the oceanfront every Sunday evening.

There is a variety of unique pop-up cocktail bars, street food stalls and all to the backdrop of Caribbean tunes. It’s an atmosphere not to be missed and your guide, who knows all the best places, will make sure you taste the best street food as well as visiting other local bars around the city.

Accommodation

Being mainly rainforest, and because much of the trip takes place in the rainforest, you will sleep in beds surrounded by mosquito nets.

Sleeping within the rainforest and savannah is a fantastic experience, and comes as second nature after a day or two.

While no one comes to Guyana looking for a luxury travel experience, welcome creature comforts are on offer at the charming colonial boutique Cara Lodge in Georgetown as well as the storied Pegasus on the city’s northwest corner.

A variety of expert guides may accompany on this tour, all of whom have many years’ experience and plenty of enthusiasm to make sure your trip is a great one.

Below are a few of the guides.

Wally Prince:  Unrivalled expertise and experience leading tours and teams in Guyana.

Wally is one of the most sought-after guides for professional birders, documentary teams, and scientific expeditions visiting Guyana. He served for seven years as the guide coordinator, resident wildlife biologist, chief trainer, and operations manager at Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and Development. He has identified more than 700 of the 800+ bird species recorded in Guyana and is intimately familiar with their habitats, behaviours, vocalisations, and mating rituals. He grew up wandering through Guyana’s lush and biodiverse interior.

Gary Sway:  Amerindian, Expert Naturalist

Gary Sway is a Macushi Amerindian from the village of Surama. Having grown up in the rainforest he has a great understanding and affinity for his natural surroundings and the wildlife. He has been a guide at Surama Eco-lodge for nearly 15 years and is well loved by those who have explored and seen the rainforest through his eyes. Gary is also an experienced birding guide and has represented Guyana at the Bird Expo in Columbus Ohio, USA. His patience and keen eye means great rewards for those birding with him. In his spare time Gary is a leading player in the Surama Makushi culture group.

Nadir (Carlos) Allie:  Guide, Bird Expert

Nadir (Carlos) Allie was originally from the west coast of the ancient county of Berbice. His family were rice farmers, but Carlos did not want to follow this path, and moved to Georgetown to learn his father’s profession and became a tailor. From an early age Carlos always had a love and passion for birds. He never joined the other boys in trying to shoot them with a slingshot, preferring to rescue and care for the injured ones.

In Georgetown, through his love of birds he became friends with Andy Narine and together they formed the Guyana Amazon Tropical Birds Society (GATBS). Through GATBS, Carlos was able to get involved in many different projects including bird counts for some of the interior lodges, and also collecting information on the avifauna of Guyana for a new Guyana bird list. Over the years Carlos has become an experienced bird guide, leading tours to Guyana’s top birding locations especially along the coastlands where he was born and continues to live. Carlos loves to share his passion and love of birds with visitors and locals whenever he gets the opportunity. He is especially fond of leading tours of the Botanical Gardens in Georgetown.

Almost all dietary requirements can be catered for – please enquire in advance as we have to organise supplied.

Whilst on tour the food is of a very good standard with fresh beef, chicken and fish and plenty of vegetables and fruit.

On camping trips/in remote areas, use is made of dried and salted produce, supplemented by fishing.

The blend of different ethnic influences – Indian, African, Chinese, Creole, English, Portuguese, Amerindian, North American – gives a distinctive flavour to Guyanese cuisine.

Try dishes such as Pepper Pot, meat cooked in casareep (bitter casava) juice with peppers and herbs. Garlic pork, a specialty at Christmas.  Curry and Roti is popular everywhere. Seafood is plentiful and varied, as is the wide variety of tropical fruit and vegetables. Try casava and yams.

Rum is the most popular drink and Guyana blends some of the worlds best. There are many inexpensive rums that are an excellent rum with mixers. The better rums such as Banks Extra, Banks XM 10 Year and DDL’s 12 year old King of Diamonds are smooth rums and great straight or on the rocks. DDL’s 15 year old El Dorado was voted the best rum in the world in 1999, 2000 and 2001, and is as smooth as a good brandy. The local Banks Beer is a good beer.

The water from the tap is brownish in colour, which is from the tannin in the water, and not polluted. However, it is recommended that bottled water, which is readily available, is used for drinking. Remember to drink plenty of it to prevent dehydration as it does get humid in Guyana.

Activity Level

This has been classified as an easy to moderate trek.

You need to be have a reasonable level of walking fitness to hike to Kaieteur Falls. The climb up from the Gorge to the top of the Falls is a hot and hard one which will take 4-6 hours, depending on the weather and your fitness levels. Most days you will walk for a few hours, bird spotting and searching for wildlife.

The humidity can make a short walk feel a lot harder than it is, and take on board lots of water.

The trip is open to anyone who wants to experience the rainforest, but particularly for those with an interest in hiking and wildlife.

Practical Information

Introduction to guyana.

Guyana is the only English-speaking country on the South American continent and has a Caribbean feel.

It is a destination for the nature lover looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination with many attractions. Guyana offers pristine rainforest, abundant wildlife, jaguars and the mighty Kaieteur Falls.

Start your adventure in the melting pot that is the country’s capital – Georgetown. Here Hindu, Muslim and Christian cultures blend in harmony.

Head off to visit the breathtaking Kaieteur Falls – the  world’s highest single-drop waterfall.

Then the interior beckons. Jungle and Savannah await. With luck you might spot the Cock o’ the rock or a harpy eagle.

Bigger mammals such as the ant eater might surprise you or if incredibly lucky the mighty jaguar. Travel by road or river and stay in rustic but comfortable lodges – all with an authentic Guyanese welcome.

Guyana will be an unforgettable adventure.

Geography of Guyana

Guyana has five natural habitats to discover, the most famous of which is is its dense rain forest.

This ‘jungle’ is also known as the  Forested Highland Region and is in the south of the country, and is very sparsely populated.

The majority (around 90%) of Guyana’s population lives in a marshy plain on the Atlantic coast, known as the low coastal plain .

Most of the country’s mineral deposits (bauxite, gold, diamonds) are found a little further inshore in that is called the  white sand belt .

The south west of the country gives way to a desert savannah which then becomes an interior savannah .

From here, the grasslands and mountains of the interior highlands  start to rise towards the borders with Brazil and Venezuela.

This is the largest of Guyana’s geographical areas and consists a series of plateaus, flat-topped mountains, and savannahs.

The Pakaraima Mountains dominate the western part of the interior highlands and include Mount Roraima, Guyana’s highest peak at 2,772m (9,094 ft) on the Venezuelan border.

The largest expanse of grassland, the Rupununi Savannah, covers about 15,000 square kilometres in southern Guyana.

Guyana has three large rivers, the Essequibo at 1,010km(628 miles), the Courantyne River (which forms a natural border with Suriname) at 724kms (450 miles), and the Berbice – 595kms (370 miles).

Weather in Guyana

Guyana is a hot and humid country. February and March are prime times to visit, along with Aug-Jan. Read our guide to Guyana’s weather for more.

The mean shade temperature is 27°C, while maximum is 31°C and the minimum is 24°C. The heat is greatly tempered by cooling breezes from the sea.

There are two wet seasons in the north of the country, from May to June, and from December to January.

The south and the Rupununi region receive one wet season from May to July.

All wet seasons may extend into months either side.

Rainfall averages 2,300 mm a year in Georgetown.

Good kit is vital for every trip.

Book with Andean Trails and get 15% off Páramo’s  fantastic ethical and high performance outdoor gear.

Guyana is a hot and humid country.

ATOL holiday protection

Andean Trails has 25 years of experience of putting together the best South America holidays.

We pay a fee to the CAA for every licensable passenger we book since we hold an Air Travel Organiser’s Licence granted by the Civil Aviation Authority. In the unlikely event of our insolvency, the CAA will ensure that you are not stranded abroad and will arrange to refund any money you have paid to us for an advance booking.

We also offer ATOL (Civil Aviation Authority) protected holidays to give our customers peace of mind when booking and travelling.

When you buy an ATOL protected air holiday package from Andean Trails Ltd you will receive a Confirmation Invoice from us confirming your arrangements and your protection under our Air Travel Organiser’s Licence number 6275.

You can read more about ATOL, who is covered and what protections you have if not ATOL-covered, on our ATOL page.

What is ATOL?

The CAA’s ATOL scheme offers protection to your money and your holiday if you book with us. Not everybody is covered (see ‘Who is covered?’ for more), as you must purchase an ‘air package holiday’ with Andean Trails to be protected.

And  ‘air package holiday’ is defined as including a flight and some ground services (hotel, transfer, trek etc). This is also known as an ‘ATOL-protected holiday’.

Who is covered?

To be covered by ATOL, you must book a flight and some ground services with us and be from the UK. If you are from the UK and only book ground services and no flights, you are not covered by ATOL (see below for more on how non-ATOL clients are covered).

If you are outside the UK and buy flights with us, you will be ATOL protected IF any of the flights booked with Andean Trails touches/stops in the UK at any point during your holiday package booked with us.

If you buy your flights elsewhere, please check with that agent if you are ATOL protected. Be careful with online flight purchases and make sure you know what protection you have, if any, before paying for flights.

Not all holiday or travel services offered and sold by us will be protected by the ATOL scheme. Please ask us to confirm what protection may apply to your booking.

For land only holidays not involving any air travel, in accordance with “The Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992”, all UK passengers booking with Andean Trails Ltd. are fully protected for the initial deposit and subsequently the balance of all money paid to us, arising from cancellation or curtailment of travel arrangements due to the insolvency of Andean Trails.

I’m not ATOL covered, what protection do I have?

If you are not ATOL covered, any payments you make to us go to a Trust account.

We can only access this money once your tour has been completed, meaning that if anything happens to Andean Trails Limited while you are on holiday, then your money is secure and you can either complete the trip or be able to make it home.

If you pay for your holiday with a credit card, some offer payment protection – please check with your cardholder.

You also should have cancellation protection written into your insurance (which we recommend you have at the time of booking) in case you need to cancel.

Atta rainforest lodge, Guyana

Get up into the trees like monkeys at Atta Lodge, for some up close and personal wildlife viewing.

The major attraction here is a 154m/505ft long canopy walkway, with four platforms some up to 30m into the canopy.

An array of birds and animals you struggle to see from the forest floor soon zoom into view.

Among these are endangered and protected species such as the jaguar, the bullet wood tree, greenheart and the waramadan (endemic in Guyana only to the Iwokrama Forest).

The lodge provides comfortable accommodation with 8 private rooms, three home-cooked meals per day, and ample opportunities to explore the surrounding rainforest by foot, canoe, or 4X4.

Caiman House, Guyana

You’ll need to keep quiet in your kayak as you help researchers from Caiman House search and tag black caiman at night time.

By staying here, you’ll get an inside look at the work of those trying to protect this endangered species.

You can help to collect the data of any captured caiman – some reaching up to 12 feet in length! – before they are released back into the wild.

Caiman House is once-in-a-lifetime and thrilling part to any tour of Guyana, especially for wildlife enthusiasts who can also look out for snakes, frogs, bird spiders and more

Georgetown, Guyana

The Atlantic gateway to Guyana, Georgetown is a fascinating mix of people, history fusions.

The ex-British colony contains influences from Amerindians, Asia, Brazil and more, making it a lively and welcoming destination.

The Natural History Museum is well worth a visit, as well as the world’s largest wooden cathedral and the thrumming market.

English is widely spoken and friendly local people are normally up for a chat about the unique atmosphere of Georgetown.

Iwokrama Field Station , Guyana

Deep into Guyana’s enormous rainforest lies Iwokrama, a one million acre wilderness full of wildlife.

Birds, trees frogs and the elusive puma live in the forests, whose verdant canopy you can enjoy from the Turtle Mountain vantage point.

The area is protected and known as Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation, with the full involvement of the local people.

You can see their history in the Amerindian petroglyphs close to some rivers, a fascinating insight into how animals and humans have coexisted for centuries in this pristine rainforest.

Kaieteur Falls, Guyana

Flying over the jungle canopy, the views confirm that there are no other falls in the world with the magnitude of the sheer drop existing at Kaieteur.

Being so remote, you can walk right up to the flowing water, which gushes 822 feet into a deep and forested gorge.

Look for Golden frogs, unique to a tiny area, living in bromeliads growing in the warm, humid air.

Most likely your group will be the only souls in this remote location, adding to its incredible appeal.

Karanambu Ranch, Guyana

Famous for rescuing orphaned giant river otters, Karanambu also represents the spirit of travel of old.

An outpost, miles from civilisation, there’s a warm welcome and great wildlife.

See the giant Victoria Regis water lily bloom at dusk, or cruise the river looking for giant otters and caiman.

If you wake early enough, you may be able to find a giant anteater snaffling around for a treat.

Sadly, Diane McTurk is no longer with us, but the ranch continues to write its own chapters in the history of conservation.

Roraima Mountains, Guyana

Rumoured to have inspired parts of Conan Doyle’s Lost World book, ‘Tepuys’, or table top mountains, after visiting, it’s easy to see why.

From the sabanna that links Guyana’s western front with Venuzuela, the Tepuys rise dramatically.

They provide unique eco-zones for many species and the lunar-like surface is home to species found nowhere else on earth.

Waterfalls, rapids and rainforest criss-cross the various faces and sections of the Tepuys, making Mount Roraima one of the most acclaimed sights in South America.

Chiloé Island Tours and Things To Do

A photo of palafito houses in Castro, Chiloe

Chiloé Island Tours, Activities and things to Do There is so much to do and see on Chiloé Island that the main issue may be how to fit all those tours and activities into your travel itinerary.  The island of Chiloé, in Chile’s Lake District, was once a strategic point of interest for seafarers and pirates alike. Fortunately, for the intrepid traveller, it now seems often overlooked by tourists visiting Chile.   Yet it really shouldn’t be, as here you will find a culturally rich land, with landscapes ranging from temperate rainforests to agricultural land of rolling hills to pristine sand …

A visit to Guyana is not complete without taking advantage of one of the many Kaieteur Falls tours. I’m always amazed when I’m introduced to a new and exciting piece of information about the Caribbean. I remember growing up and hearing about these falls and seeing them in countless books about Guyana and the Caribbean. But what I just learnt is that they are four times higher than Niagara Falls. In fact, the Kaieteur Falls has the distinction of being the highest single drop waterfall in the world.

The Kaieteur Falls, which is only one of over 300 waterfalls in Guyana, stands at seven hundred and forty-one (741) feet and flows into the Potaro River. This land of many waterways is an eco-lover’s dream and is easily one of the Caribbean’s nature sanctuaries. The country is located in South America and is home to a portion of the famed Amazon jungle . In fact, the Kaieteur Falls is one of the highlights of the jungle.

Because these falls are so iconic, they have become a world recognised tourist attraction. Kaiteur Falls tours are very popular and include tours by air and tours by foot. Here are some of the best Kaieteur Falls Tours.

YOUR SAFETY Our number one priority is your safety and welfare.

Suriname Paramaribo is a small friendly city. Normal travel precautions for any city are advised. The downtown area is very quiet at night and not worth visiting. Restaurants and bars tend to be out of the city centre, with many focused around the Uitgangs Centrum area near the hotels we use. Uitgangs Centrum is buzzy and quite safe in the evenings.

Once out of the city and into the rainforest it will be isolated with just small villages and you will be perfectly safe. Surinamese people are very friendly and enjoy meeting visitors.

French Guiana French Guiana is actually a department of France and so in safety terms much the same as being in France. Expect to see gendarmes and even French military (guarding the spaceport and on manoeuvres) and European standard roads. Cayenne is a tiny, sleepy city and normal travel precautions for any city are advised.

Guyana We always get the question is Guyana safe? Like any big city, Georgetown has areas that are to be avoided by visitors. But we only use hotels that have good standards and are safe. Most of the time in Georgetown you will be accompanied by our experienced guides and drivers who live in the city. During your free time if you want to visit a bar or restaurant in the evening we recommend a taxi, which is inexpensive. Your hotel will be happy to call one for you.

Once out of Georgetown and into what we call the interior, it is a different scenario. You will be in areas with small villages where everyone greets you with a smile and you will be perfectly safe. Some lodges don’t even have locks on the doors as there is no need. There will always be an experienced guide close by to accompany you on your excursions and bring the rainforest and savannah to life and share their knowledge and experience.

Generally, you will find the Guyanese people extremely friendly and only too willing to help you enjoy their country.

VACCINATIONS Malaria  – Many of the areas you visit in Guyana’s interior will have no malaria. However, it is recommended to take malaria Prophylactics as a precaution on some trips. Please consult your physician before your departure. All beds in the interior have mosquito nets, and on camping trips, hammocks with specially fitted mosquito nets are provided. It is advisable to use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and long trousers at night. The mosquitoes are often more prevalent at dusk and dawn.

Yellow Fever  – A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required for travellers coming from or transiting from a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission. Vaccination must be undertaken at least 10 days before travel to, or through Suriname. Suriname recognizes the Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is valid for life starting 10 days after vaccination. Children over 1 year of age are required to have a vaccination certificate. Travellers should carry their vaccination card (Yellow Fever) with them at all times.

CLOTHING In the interior wear casual, comfortable clothing. A shirt with a collar helps protect you from the sun, and a hat and sunglasses are vital. During the day shorts and shirt are fine. In the evening you would want long trousers and a shirt with long sleeves. There is no need to dress up in the interior. You can leave any travel or city clothes in your city hotel or with our office when you are travelling around the interior.

Footwear  – Comfortable walking shoes or boots and sandals.

How to Visit Kaieteur Falls in Guyana

Travelling to Guyana? Then you must visit Kaieteur Falls! This is simply one of South America’s most amazing natural wonders or even the world.

This is the world’s widest single-drop waterfall in the heart of the Amazon jungle.

Hi, we’re Rach & Marty!

We’ve visited every country in the world and want to help you get the most out of your travels!

Whether you need an expertly planned itinerary , some experienced hints and tips , or just craving a delicious food adventure , we’ve got you covered!

We may earn affiliate commissions from websites we link to, at no cost to you. Click here for details.

But tourism in Guyana is still in the entry stage, so a bit of organising or know-how is required to visit Kaieteur Falls.

Here is some practical information on how to get there.

Table of Contents

How to visit Kaieteur Falls – 2 Options

You have two options to reach the incredible Kaieteur Falls. By plane as part of a day trip from Georgetown or an overland journey that takes about five days.

How to visit Kaieteur Falls Guyana #visiteverycountry

1. Visit Kaieteur Falls as part of a day trip (by plane)

Currently, three airlines fly to Kaieteur Falls as part of a day. All have offices at the domestic Ogle airport, and if you are flying in here, we recommend asking around as soon as you land.

Please note most international flights arrive at a different airport – Cheddi Jagan International Airport GEO, but Liat flies into Ogle Airport from Barbados or Trinidad. Book the cheapest flights on Skyscanner.

Airlines flying to Kaieteur Falls

Trans Guyana Airways

Contact: +592 222 2525, [email protected]

With a nice office and professional staff, this seems to be the leading airline for day trips. You can inquire directly at the office at Ogle Airport. The cost of the day trip is USD 190 per person.

They work with Evergreen Adventures, which is one of the main tour operators in Guyana if you are looking for a bigger package rather than just to visit Kaieteur Falls, they can assist you.

The day trip picks up passengers at 11.30 downtown for 1 pm departure. Lunch and water are usually included.

Air Services Limited

+592 222-1234, [email protected]

This is the company we used for our trip. There is an office at Ogle airport and their website has a schedule. Flights are due to depart every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. But please note a minimum number is required so when we enquired at the office we were told there are no departures until Sunday. We then ended up flying on Saturday as the flight was charted through a tour company.

The cost is USD 190 per person, although you will see an advertisement for $150. We believe these are simple old adverts from a few years ago.

*UPDATE 2024* We’ve been advised that the price has increased to USD 270 per person.

Roraima Airways

+592 225-9648, [email protected]

We have visited the office at the airport, but these guys seem to be the least organized. They had a flight on Sunday, and it might just be an airline that tour companies use to chart their flight for groups.

As the packages are pretty much the same and if your time in Guyana is limited, we would still take it as the falls are worth it.

The cost is the same at $190.

*UPDATE 2024* We’ve been advised that the price has increased to USD 280 per person.

Example of Kaieteur Falls itinerary

When you arrive at Kaieteur National Park, a local guide will escort you for the next 2 hours. He will provide more information on the waterfalls, the park and the wildlife. There are 3 different viewpoints, each about a 10-15 minute walk.

The main office has a small souvenir shop and bathrooms, and you can purchase drinks if you need them.

Tour Operators in Guyana that can book a trip to Kaieteur Falls

You can also book your trip to visit Kaieteur Falls with an operator, but please note all flights are still subject to change as if they don’t have enough clients, they won’t fly, and you can get bumped to the next day.

Of course, if you are booking as part of a group, this should solve the issue of minimum numbers.

The prices are usually much higher, around USD 210 or 220 per person, but you can also pay with a card. See below for all details and their website, which lists their current packages in Guyana.

View of the Falls - How to visit Kaieteur Falls

2. Visit Kaieteur Falls overland from Georgetown

If you are seeking a real adventure, then this is it. The overland journey involves a boat ride upstream, a few days of hiking and overnight in the jungle. The journey starts with a 9-hour bus ride to the town of Mahdia.

On the second day you will take a boat upstream, and from then on, it’s a few days of hiking to reach the National Park and to visit Kaieteur Falls.

The return to Georgetown would most likely be by plane. Enquire with tour operators for more details, and please note that an overland trip to visit Kaieteur Falls is really only suitable for experienced adventurers and hikers.

Tip:  Be prepared to spend a few days in Georgetown as flights might get pushed due to minimum numbers or weather. But trust me, it will be worth it. See some good accommodation options below.

Try to sit on the plane’s right side as you will see the waterfalls when approaching and leaving. You get the last glimpse, and the afternoon sun might help to capture it better.

We hadn’t realized before traveling how much of the trip would be on a completely private basis (other than the charter flight) – the road transfers, boat transfers, all activities, the whole Mapari experience - so the value became more evident as the trip unfolded. It was a fantastic memorable trip with some really magical moments so thank you again for all your efforts in organizing it all for us.

I can’t thank you enough for all your help in planning this trip, Shebana. And, success! Kevin and I saw not just one but three anteaters (including one baby!)!! We had bonus moments with giant river otters, arapaima, caiman, capuchin monkeys and loads of birds! The best part was spending time with Melanie and learning more about Karanambu! So, thank you once again - we could not have planned this trip without you!

How to Plan a Day Trip to Kaieteur Falls in Guyana: A Step-by-Step Guide

tours to kaieteur falls guyana

Surrounded by complete wilderness, visiting Kaieteur Falls in Guyana is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Here is everything you need to know to plan a trip to kaieteur falls..

As the plane flew over Kaieteur Falls, I felt a sense of wonder that was difficult to put into words. The beauty of the falls came into view, and I was entranced by one of the most untouched natural wonders I had ever seen. The breathtaking sight of millions of litres of water plunging 250 meters into the jungle below left me in complete awe of the power of nature. This was my introduction to Kaieteur Falls, the highest single-drop waterfall in the world.

I visited Kaieteur Falls on a day trip from Georgetown, Guyana, and in this guide, I want to tell you everything about it, so you can plan it too.

Be connected at all times in Guyana at all times. I recommend an  e-SIM with Airalo. With Airalo, I bought a plan of 10 GB . Use the promo codes NEWTOAIRALO15 and AIRALOESIM10 to get 15 and 10% discount.

View of the falls from my seat

Organizing your day trip to Kaieteur Falls from Georgetown:

Before packing your bags for Kaieteur, decide if you want to travel using a tour operator . Researching prices and options is key to finding the best option for your budget and interests. While planning a day trip independently can save you some costs, you will require more time planning and scheduling the correct route.

NOTE: I went to Guyana with a full package from Wilderness Explorers . A 10-day package with them cost around 3500 EUR per person.

Here is a list of other packages I found on Viator:

It’s expensive! I know. But don’t worry, you can also visit Kaieteur Falls independently. There is only a few things I have to tell you right away. 1. It’s not cheap, 2. You need to organize your logistics well in order to avoid surprises.

Tours can be also scheduled directly with the airlines and Trans Guyana Airways is the leading airline, charging 240 EUR per person and working with tour operator Evergreen Adventures . Air Services Limited (the one that collaborated with my tour operator) is another option, setting the same price but with departures only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with a minimum number of passengers required. Roraima Airways is the least known of all three offerings, with the same package for approximately 210 EUR , but without the option of online booking.

Here are the contact details for all three airlines and some information about booking with them:

Trans Guyana Airways:

  • Phone: +592 222 2525
  • Trans Guyana will redirect you to Evergreen Adventures, where you can book your tour through their agency.

Air Services Limited:

Roraima Airways:

  • [email protected]
  • Phone: +592 225-9648
  • Tours can’t be booked online, and you may have to drop by their office in Georgetown’s Ogle Airport and schedule your trip from there.

While in Georgetown, I was able to find the best prices available for any hotel at Booking.com and Agoda . These are the two largest platforms to compare hotel prices.

I stayed at Julian’s guesthouse in Georgetown. I found this guest house on Booking.com and I liked it because of its central and safe location, as well its very inexpensive price.

Safety checks at Georgetown's Ogle Airport

With all airline tours, you will get the same package:

  • Water (some tours will include a packed lunch, so ask in advance)
  • Kaieteur National Park Registration fee

Additionally, all-day tours have only two hours to stay at Kaieteur Falls. This is enough time to explore the waterfalls independently and take enough photos, but it will still feel like you are rushing from spot to spot.

INSIDE TIP: If you are only three or four passengers on the flight (depending on the tour operator), you can always ask the pilot to do a lower (or a second) flyover of the falls from a different angle. Also, take a front seat on the left side when travelling from Georgetown to Kaieteur and the right side when travelling from Kaieteur. You will get the best view of the falls from the air.

If you want to use a tour operator, expect to get basically the same tour and pay a higher price. The advantage of using a tour operator is the opportunity to have last-minute changes, have a company pick you up from the hotel, and be informed of any change in your tour itinerary. Tour companies are also ideal if you want to visit multiple destinations in Guyana and need someone to handle the logistics.

These are some of the most reputable tour operators in Guyana:

View of the Kaieteur Falls from the air

Wilderness Explorers

  • [email protected]
  • Phone: +592 219 0570
  • Kaieteur Falls tour: 175-250 EUR per person.

This is the most-known company in Guyana. They organized the National Geographic expeditions in this country and the trips from journalists and photographers that collaborate with the tourism authority. This is the company I used for my 10-day trip.

Roraima Tours

Evergreen Adventures

  • [email protected]
  • Phone: +592 227 7698
  • Kaieteur Falls tour 200-400 EUR per person.

Adventure Guianas

  • [email protected]
  • Phone: +592 225 5911
  • Kaieteur Falls tour 150-250 EUR per person.

Guyana Sustainable Tourism Initiative

  • [email protected]
  • Phone: +592 668 9298
  • Kaieteur Falls tour 200-350 EUR per person.

Remember that prices may vary depending on the type of tour and group size. Contacting the tour operator directly for the most accurate and up-to-date information is always a good idea.

I compare prices for tours at Viator. This is one of the best platforms in Europe for tours. Another option is Get Your Guide . You can find almost the same tours at the same prices.

What’s the best time to visit Kaieteur Falls in Guyana?

The best time to visit Kaieteur Falls in Guyana is during the dry seasons. They occur from February to April and from September to November. During these periods, the weather is generally more favorable, with less rainfall and clearer skies, making the conditions ideal for both viewing and photographing the falls.

Advantages of Visiting During the Dry Season:

  • Better Access and Visibility: The reduced rainfall means that trails and access routes to the falls are more manageable. Additionally, clearer skies offer better visibility, allowing you to fully appreciate the majesty of the falls and the surrounding rainforest.
  • Photographic Opportunities: With less rain, there’s a higher chance of capturing stunning photos without the interference of mist or heavy clouds, which can obscure the falls.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The dry season is also an excellent time for wildlife viewing in the surrounding Kaieteur National Park, as animals are more likely to be seen near the water sources.

Considerations:

  • Water Flow: While the dry season offers better access and visibility, the water flow over the falls may be less intense compared to the wet season. However, Kaieteur Falls is still one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world, so even during the dry season, the sight is spectacular.

I visited the waterfall in October and the experience was as expectacular as you can imagine

Visiting During the Wet Season:

  • Experience the Full Force: If you visit during the wet season (May to August and December to January), you’ll witness the falls in their full glory with a much more powerful water flow. However, be prepared for potentially challenging weather conditions, including heavy rain, which can limit visibility and make access more difficult.

What to expect on tour?

Once you arrive at Kaieteur Falls National Park , a ranger will greet you and give you more or less 10 minutes you get ready for the short hike and take a look at their tourism office.

At this office, you can find more information about the falls and the local Amerindian communities and browse through a small souvenir shop with items made by members of the nearby village of Karamang.

NOTE: Beside the basic hiking outfit, it is recommended that you bring mosquito repellent and sunscreen.

Amount of monthly visitors in Kaieteur Falls

Once your group is ready to go, you will take a 15-20 minute hike from the airstrip to the falls, during which you will learn about the region’s flora and fauna, as well as the local communities who still inhabit the area. There are three viewpoints in Kaieteur, each offering a unique photo opportunity. Since most tours are small, you will have plenty of space and time to explore independently and enjoy the natural wonder before you.

You might have seen photos of travellers from several spots closer to the falls on the internet. Unfortunately, they are no longer accessible due to safety concerns.

INSIDER TIP: Want to spend the night at Kaieteur Falls? There is a guesthouse near the falls that offers basic accommodation. However, be aware that the facilities are rudimentary and you will need to arrange your own transportation to and from the falls. In addition, you will need to bring your own food and supplies. Tour operators may be able to assist you in arranging an overnight stay, but I do not have any information on this.

Can you fly a drone in Kaieteur Falls?

It is not possible to fly drones in Kaieteur Falls National Park without prior authorization from the relevant authorities (the drone won’t even take off). However, after seeing some videos of travellers doing it, I wanted to find out how complicated it is to get this permit. Since Kaieteur Falls is a national park, I was required to apply for special authorization from the government . This can be done through the Guyana Tourism Authority (or they will explain to you in detail how to do it).

Unfortunately, here comes the tricky part. Once in Kaieteur Falls, you must provide a code on the DJI app to start your drone. I didn’t think about this issue, and since I had no phone signal in Kaieteur, I could not get the code or fly my drone.

In case you apply for a drone permit and receive it, remember to activate the code for Kaieteur Falls National Park on your DJI app before arriving in this area.

Planning to visit Kaieteur Falls overland?

Yes! It is possible to get to Kaieteur Falls via land, but it will take five days . First, you’ll need to take a public bus to the town of Mahdia , and from there, plan a three-day hike to the base of Kaieteur Falls. This trip may be challenging to organize, but if you’re interested in a unique adventure that not many travellers have experienced, this could be a great option.

Some tour operators offer overland hike packages with prices starting at 800 – 900 EUR, including a return flight to Georgetown. Search for “Kaieteur Overland Hike” to learn more.
