In such a case, the university will refund any registration fees paid towards the said qualification.

An appropriate NQF 7 qualification from an accredited provider of higher education. A minimum of 60% for the major(s), or for a selected number of NQF 7 modules in the qualification. Unsuccessful applicants may appeal to the College of Graduate Studies on the application portal at https://www.unisa.ac.za/sites/corporate/default/Apply-for-admission/Apply-for-admission-to-study:-application-tool and will be required to provide a motivation for special admission. The motivation must incorporate the following: * academic motivation offering evidence of your ability to study a postgraduate qualification, * work experience relevant to the qualification and courses completed since graduating with a Bachelor's degree or Advanced Diploma. These appeals will only be considered if the enrolment target of the qualification has not been met and/or additional enrolment spaces are available.

  • The application fee is a once-off fee. * You only need to pay the application fee once when you receive your formal Unisa student number. 
  • This application fee is non-refundable even if you decide not to study through Unisa or do not qualify for admission to Unisa.

This includes first-time Unisa applicants, Unisa students changing to a new qualification and/or changing the specialisation of their current qualification, and applicants completing an undergraduate qualification who wish to continue with postgraduate studies. * Student numbers issued for short learning programmes and the Graduate School of Business Leadership are not formal Unisa student numbers.
  • You may apply for a maximum of two qualifications , ranked in order of preference (although you may only register for one should both of your applications be successful). No changes may be made after the closing date for applications.
  • You must accept or decline Unisa's offer within the prescribed period of time .
  • You may only accept one offer. If you accept an offer, the other application for admission/offer will automatically fall away.
  • If you accept Unisa's offer for the 2025 academic year, you may only register for the qualification and specialisation for which you received an offer. You may also only register for the 2025 academic year. Should you decide not to register for the 2025 academic year for any reason, you will need to apply for admission during the next application period.

The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.

Applicants are required to meet one of the following criteria with a competitive result:

Higher education study

  • Successfully completed equivalent to a minimum of half a year of full-time study of a higher education program at a recognised higher education provider

Vocational Education and Training (VET)

  • Complete an award from a registered training organisation at Certificate IV or above

Work and life experience (for domestic students only)

  • Passed a UniSA Online literacy and numeracy test and have relevant work experience, or
  • Completed a 12-month UniSA Foundation Studies program or equivalent, or
  • Qualified for Special Entry

Recent secondary education

  • Completed a secondary education qualification equivalent to SACE, such as an interstate year 12 or international qualification

Generally, any desktop or laptop computer purchased in the past three years should be capable of meeting your online learning needs. While mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones will be able to access most of your online course content, there are likely to be elements of most courses where we recommend you use a desktop or laptop computer. Your computer should be able to:

  • run a modern browser (Microsoft Edge, Firefox 24, Safari 5, or Chrome 32 or later versions)
  • run programs to create documents, spreadsheets and presentations
  • use a web camera and headset (or ear pods with microphone)

Online Course Facilitator

I am the Program Director of Tourism, Event and Hospitality Management degrees at UniSA. I also am a Senior Lecturer in Event and Tourism Management and a Research Ethics Advisor. I am currently serving on the Editorial Board for several journals, including Event Management, the International Journal of Event and Festival Management and Frontiers in Sports and Active Living. My PhD specialises in the fields of Tourism and Event Management. I am passionate about event management, visitor experiences and event impacts and have conducted research projects on local and international festivals and sports events. My research has informed both government and industry to better understand the wider impact to the community, and has guided policy making. With my industry informed experience, I believe graduates will be well equipped with the skills necessary for future success.

UniSA Online degrees start four times a year in January, April, June and September. There are key application dates for each term. All of our courses are asynchronous, meaning you choose when to study, whenever it suits you. However, if your degree has online exams, you will need to sit these at a designated date and time. Some courses may also require you to speak to your academics via phone or online communication channels at a mutually agreed time as part of your assessment.

Our academics are available seven days a week, including weeknights. Throughout your degree, you’ll be supported by our highly experienced academic team of Online Course Facilitators and Online Tutors. Full-time students study two courses each term. It makes earning a degree completely achievable, especially if you’re working. Your degree is delivered over four terms each year. Each term runs for ten weeks with two-week breaks in between each term.

You’ll also have the option to go part-time, or switch between the two. If you need to take a break in your study, that’s an option too. We recommend speaking to your Student Adviser who can help you update your study plan and check when your courses are offered.

When you study online, everything from your course material to weekly activities and assessments are fully online. Studying on campus requires students to physically come on to campus at specific times to attend lectures, tutorials and practicals. On-campus students have face-to-face contact with academics and fellow students and also communicate via email and online discussion boards.

Distance Education involves physical course material packages being sent to students, usually print based but occasionally audio or video. Communication is usually via telephone, mail and email. In today’s digital era, distance education has been superseded by online education.

UNISA Higher Certificate in Tourism Management Course Modules and Curriculum

Who can register.

Successful applicants and re-registering students must register to study through Unisa in 2024. Applicants can only begin the registration process if they have received an official approval of their application from Unisa. Re-registering students can begin the registration process after receiving their registration details from Unisa. Should you wish to change to an alternative qualification, please  apply  for the alternative qualification during the next application period.

How to choose your modules

Each Unisa qualification is structured in such a way that you need to pass a certain number of modules within a certain amount of time in order to graduate. You must pass a  minimum number of credits / modules annually  so that you are able to re-register and continue with your qualification:

  • At least 36 NQF credits (3 modules of 12 credits each) in your first year of study;
  • At least 48 NQF credits (4 modules of 12 credits each) in your second or further years of study.

You may not register for more than the allowed  maximum number of credits / modules  per semester:

  • At least 60 NQF credits (5 modules of 12 credits each) in a semester;
  • At least 120 NQF credits (10 modules of 12 credits each) per year for year modules.

The maximum number of credits do not include supplementary and/or aegrotat examinations from a previous semester. Modules taken for non-degree/non-diploma purposes also count towards the maximum number of credits allowed. You must take  your available time  into consideration when choosing your modules, as this will impact your academic performance. You need approximately:

  • 6 to 8 hours per week for semester modules;
  • 4 to 6 hours per week for year modules.
