CAMBRIDGE UNITED

Abbey Stadium (capacity 8,127)

The Abbey Stadium has been home to Cambridge United since 1932. The record attendance at the stadium is 14,000 which was actually a friendly in 1970 against Chelsea to celebrate the installation of new floodlights.

The club were challenging for promotion to the Premier League in the early 1990’s but have since declined through the leagues, meaning plans to expand the stadium were scrapped. However, a new South Stand was opened in 2002, which gives the stadium a much more modern look.

Away fans visiting the Abbey Stadium are located in the Marstons Smooth South Stand, with a typical allocation of around 1,600. However, for larger games, an area in the Habbin Terrace is made available.

Directions by Car

For directions to Cambridge United’s Abbey Stadium (CB5 8LN for Sat Navs) from wherever your journey starts, just type in your postcode or starting location here:

There is no parking available for away fans at the stadium, so fans tend to park in the streets behind the stadium. Otherwise there is some off road car parking to be had a little further away from the stadium.

We’ve compiled a list of car parks, below, near to the Abbey Stadium for hassle free parking while you’re at the match.

Cambridge now has two railway stations, Cambridge and Cambridge North, with the latter being slightly closer to the stadium. However, most fans will arrive at Cambridge Station which is just under a 2 mile walk, so many fans choose to take a taxi.

For those that wish to walk, head away from the station and turn right onto Tenison Road. Take another right onto Devonshire Road and follow this around to the left to the next junction. Turn right onto Mill Road and head over the bridge then take the third left on to Sedgwick Street. Follow this all the way up until you reach Coldham’s Common. Walk through this field and under the railway bridge and you will eventually reach the away turnstiles.

Find train times and book your tickets for the best available prices by clicking through to the trainline website below:

There are a number of away friendly pubs near the Abbey Stadium, all of which cater to different needs. Please note, however, that some bars require club colours to be covered and some do not allow children.

However, rather than take our word for it, we want to give you the view from other away fans who have visited the Abbey Stadium.

Over the coming months we will be building up fans reviews of the best places to drink on an away trip to Cambridge United, and you’ll be able to find them here.

In the meantime, we’ve included a map below with all the best away pubs highlighted for you.

Away Fans' Guide | Cambridge United

Sync Argyle fixtures to your phone

Argyle head to Abbey Stadium in Cambridge looking to return to winning ways at the top of Sky Bet League One. On Friday night, Port Vale ended Steven Schumacher's side's 15-game unbeaten run in the league, but neither Ipswich Town or Sheffield Wednesday could secure the wins to leapfrog the Greens at the top of the tree. Despite the combination of cost of travel, Christmas fast approaching, and disrupted public transport services, another huge travelling contingent is expected in Cambridgeshire. Thank you for your support. Making the trip? Read on for our fans' guide.

Away fans' guide to Abbey Stadium

From the South - M11 to Junction 14, then turn east along the A14 dual carriageway: From the North - A14 from Huntingdon, then turn east along the A14 dual carriage way: Exit the A14 at the fourth junction (situated east of Cambridge), up the slip road to the roundabout (signposted Stow-Cum-Quy). Turn right onto the A1303, and return westwards towards Cambridge. Go straight over the first roundabout, passing Marshall Airport to the left.

For this match Argyle supporters will be allocated the South Stand.

Turnstiles will be open at 1.30pm when the catering facilities will also be opened.

Information for supporters travelling to the ground can be found here:  https://www.cambridge-united.co.uk/fans/away-fan-information/travel/

Train Cambridge Station Cambridge rail station is located in the city centre and is a 25-30 minute walk from the ground. To get to the ground walk away from the station along Station Road and take the first right (Tenison Road). Take the first right again (Devonshire Road), follow this round to the left, up to the next junction. Turn right - again - onto Mill Road. Walk over the railway bridge, then take the third left, (Sedgewick Street). Follow this road, pass a set of traffic calming barriers, and shops (at this point you are in Cromwell Road) to a T-junction, (Coldham's Lane). Ahead of you should be a large field (Coldham's Common). Go into this field and follow a path under the railway bridge to the away turnstiles. There are regular services to and from Cambridge Railway Station, where taxis are available or the Citibus C3 service runs from the station every ten minutes during the day and at longer intervals in the evenings. Cambridge North There is now a new station in the city, Cambridge North, nearby in Chesterton. Not every train stops there however and it is approximately a 15-20 minute walk to the ground. Coming out of Cambridge North Station, turn to the left and walk through the Bike Parking area and onto the Cycle/Footpath running parallel with the train tracks. This leads to a Cul-de-Sac called Moss Bank. On exiting Moss Bank, turn right on Fen Road. Continue straight on Fen Road (and later Water Street) for about 1/2 a mile until you reach the Green Dragon Pub. At the pub, cross the river using the footbridge and then cross over Stourbridge Common to join Oyster Row and Garlic Row. At the end of Garlic Row you will join Newmarket Road - turn left, cross over the railway lines and you will see the stadium on your right.

A Citibus C3 bus stops within a few yards of the ground (Ditton Walk stop) on Newmarket Road and runs from the railway station and through the city centre every ten minutes during the day, and at longer intervals in the evenings. Check the Stagecoach website for more details and a Citi 3 timetable.

See information concerning buses and the rail stations:

https://www.cambridge-united.co.uk/fans/away-fan-information/travel/

Please see bus times here:

https://www.stagecoachbus.com/routes/east/3/cherry-hinton-fison-road/xeao003.i

There is no on-site car parking available at the Abbey Stadium and street parking around the stadium is restricted. It is therefore recommended Argyle supporters use the match day park and ride service instead.

This is situated near the airport to the east of the city (CB5 8AA) and is a 10-to-15-minute walk to the ground along Newmarket Road.

Parking is free at the Park & Ride for supporters who are walking to the ground, and the cost of using the bus service is £2.50 for a return ticket.    If travelling via the Park & Ride bus service, the ticket is valid for one passenger only. However, if travelling with children, the normal £3 Park & Ride ticket is also available to purchase, allowing children under the age of 16 to travel free with one fee-paying adult. Ahead of the 3pm kick-off, football fans can catch any of the regular Park & Ride buses heading into the city centre, which will all be stopping at the ground. On the return leg, there will be a dedicated bus waiting in the layby outside the stadium at 4.45pm, to take fans back to the Park & Ride once the game is over.

Tickets for this game will remain on sale from the Home Park Ticket Office until 3pm on Thursday, 8 December for in person, telephone bookings on 01752 907700 and online at  ArgyleTickets.com.

After this, supporters will be able to buy on the day at Cambridge, with a price increase of £2 per ticket, from the ticket windows at Newmarket Road end of the ground.

If you have booked for collection, your tickets will be available at the Home Park Ticket Office until 3pm on Thursday. After that point, any remaining will be available from 1pm on the day, at Cambridge.

If you have booked and paid for postage and your tickets have not arrived, please call the Home Park Ticket Office on 01752 907700 or email [email protected] by noon on Friday 9 December so we can arrange duplicates for collection at Cambridge on the day.

There is a family zone outside the club shop on matchdays weather permitting. All families are welcome to enjoy the family area.

Turnstiles will be open from 1.30pm, at which point the food and drink kiosks will also open.

The Abbey Stadium is now a cash free stadium.

There will be Abbey Helpers situated around the ground to assist supporters before the match with any questions. Please ask if you require assistance.

Is there Blue Badge parking available for away fans?

There are some spaces available on matchdays at the ground. Please contact me  [email protected]  if one is required. We will then confirm availability.

Please see the link  https://www.slocamutd.org/accessible-parking.html  most of the information is for weekdays, however, it does include some information about Blue Badge spaces locally. These are mostly at the Park and Ride and are easiest to access.  Where to stay? Cambridge United have partnered with Novotel Cambridge North this season. Click here:  https://all.accor.com/hotel/B2Z3/index.en.shtml?dateIn=&nights=&compositions=1&stayplus=false&snu=false#origin=novotel

Do you have a Changing Places or baby changing facility?

There are Baby Changing Facilities at the ground. These are located outside the Signature Suite in the Main Stand. To use them away supporters would need to ask steward to take them there.

Please give details of pre-match venue for away fans (Will our supporters be able to use your club house or do they need to make other arrangements)?

To use the Abbey Lounge, see  https://cambridgeunitedsupportersclub.co.uk/   Anyone wanting to use it will need to contact the club directly in advance of the match. The members club is independent from Cambridge United. There is not a recommended list and there are no pubs within a 10-minute radius of the Stadium. Some will close on match days.      Where is the nearest cash machine to the Stadium?

There is a Tesco superstore about 10-minute walk from the ground on Newmarket Road

What food and drink are available in the concourse at the Stadium?

There is a range of food and drink available. At the South Stand there is a mobile which sells fried food and another kiosk which sells hot drinks, beer, pies etc. There is no concourse at the ground

Is there a Matchday helpline number for emergencies?

Contact Dave, Cambridge’s Supporter Liaison Officer, on 07703 274034 for any questions or queries.   Dave can also be contacted via  [email protected]

Supporters who require assistance when arriving at the Abbey Stadium should contact Cambridge Utd in advance of the match

Scoreboard Announcements

Cambridge United can arrange for a scoreboard announcement to be made, for details see:  https://www.slocamutd.org/scoreboard.html

ROYSTON TOWN – Wednesday July 12

Tickets: No details released as yet.

Public transport: If travelling by train from Cambridge, you will need to go to King’s Cross and then catch the service from St Pancras to Ebbsfleet.

But if you want to be back in Cambridge before midnight, you’d better be on the 9.48pm train out of there!

HEMEL HEMPSTEAD TOWN – Wednesday July 26

Parking: There is a small car park at Hemel Hempstead’s Vauxhall Road ground, but on-street parking is available.

Public transport: If travelling by train from Cambridge, you will need to go to Finsbury Park and catch the underground to Euston, where you can get a direct service to Hemel Hempstead station.

But the station is almost two-and-a-half miles from the stadium, so unless you fancy a long walk, it’s best to get a taxi.
