The Safari Specialists is a small, passionate and professional Africa Tour Operator offering expert advice and a personalised service. We love to share our passion and knowledge with our clients and to guide them through the process of creating the perfect itinerary for them. Our website is full of information on areas, properties and example itineraries but all of our trips are completely tailored to you so simply get in touch and talk to us about safaris!

“Creating a safari can often seem daunting when starting out but we are here to make the process simple. I started The Safari Specialists to pass on my love and knowledge for Africa and to help people create amazing memories on the continent that has captured so many hearts, including mine. The first step is getting in touch and from there we do all the work.” Tom Grimes, The Safari Specialists founder.

All of our itineraries are completely tailor made, let us design your perfect trip. Send us an email or call us on 01747 445060

There are simply thousands of possible combinations of countries, national parks and camps to consider when planning a safari holiday to Africa, whether it be a classic safari, walking safari or photographic safari. Not all are made equal and while each has its merits (mostly), it is important to choose the right combination to ensure you get the most from your Africa experience. At The Safari Specialists we want you to return from your trip with the same love for the continent that we have and to have enjoyed the most memorable holiday you have ever had!

We work with many safari camps across Africa but we do not have a direct affiliation to any specific company, we do not suggest itineraries based solely on their price or the relationship that we have with those involved. Planning a tailor made safari can be a tricky business and we work hard to make sure that every itinerary is carefully considered and crafted before we recommend it to you.

Safari holidays

Incredible safari holidays with kuoni.

No matter how many wildlife documentaries you’ve seen, nothing can prepare you for the real thing. Let us take you on an African safari holiday .

The term ‘safari’ comes from a Swahili word meaning ‘journey’. Take Jeep rides deep into the wilderness or fly into tiny national park airstrips where lions roam the runway. Soar over herds of zebra at sunrise in a hot-air balloon, sleep out in a luxury treehouse under a blanket of stars, or book your seat for the greatest wildlife show on Earth where over a million wildebeest migrate across the scorched plains.

We’ve spent more than 40 years finding the best African safari experiences and places to stay. We can put you in touch with incredible local guides and tell you about the safari camps where elephants walk right through the lobby. Our safari experts love sharing their tips and advice to make sure you have the best safari holiday possible – in fact, we were voted Best Medium Safari, Nature & Wildlife Holiday Company at the British Travel Awards 2019.

We know that some guests enjoy a more sociable experience with like-minded travellers, while others love the thrill of an independent adventure, so with us you can choose an escorted small group safari or an independent tailor-made safari where you’ll have your own private driver/guide.

Whether it’s your first trip to Africa or you just can’t stop going back, talk to us and we can help create the perfect tailor-made safari for you.

Wild Wings Safaris

About wild wings safaris, offices in the uk and south africa.

Wild Wings Safaris is a specialist safari operator with offices in the UK and South Africa. Since 2005 we've grown to become one of the top rated African safari operators. We arrange tailor-made safaris to all the top safari and travel destinations throughout Southern and East Africa, including the Kruger National Park, Sabi Sand Game Reserve, Victoria Falls, Okavango Delta, Serengeti, Masai Mara and more.

Ground Operator for Kruger National Park

In South Africa, we conduct affordable Kruger National Park safaris with our own custom safari vehicles and highly experienced guides. Our scheduled Kruger Park small group safaris depart regularly from Johannesburg, Nelspruit or Cape Town. We also create bespoke safaris to game reserves and safari lodges throughout Southern and East Africa. Every member of our team has traveled extensively, which allows us to offer expert advice and design custom itineraries to meet your exact budget and requirements.

Best price guarantee

Our best price guarantee ensures you will always pay the lowest possible rate. We are fully transparent about costs and what is included and excluded. There are no surprises, no hidden costs and no credit card surcharges. If you book with us, you will pay the same as, or often less than, if you book directly with each lodge or via an online booking platform. Plus you get the benefit of our expertise and always have someone to turn to. We offer 24/7 customer support, before, during and after your trip.

About Our Offices and the Financial Protection We Offer You

Wild Wings Safaris operates as one brand, but our offices in the UK and South Africa are separate legal entities.

Our Office in the UK

If you book through our UK office, you will be contracting with Wild Wings Safaris UK Ltd , a company registered in the UK and subject to UK laws and regulations. For your financial protection, our UK office is a member of ABTA (member number Y6147) and has Financial Failure Insurance in place via AVS.

When you book with our UK office, you will receive your quote in British Pounds (GBP) and will need to pay into our UK bank account (credit cards accepted).

Our Head Office in South Africa

When you book through our South African office, you will be contracting with Wild Wings Safaris (Pty) Ltd , a company registered in South Africa and subject to SA laws and regulations.

For your financial protection, our SA office is a member of SATSA (member number 1540), the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association, which includes bonding insurance.

If you wish to book via our SA office, you will receive your quote in South African Rand (ZAR) and will need to pay into our SA bank account (credit cards accepted). Alternatively, you can pay by bank transfer in USD into our USD account (no credit cards accepted).

Comprehensive Public & Passenger Liability Insurance

Both our UK and South African offices are covered by extensive public liability and passenger liability insurance, underwritten by Lloyd's of London. If you are from the UK, we recommend that you book via our UK office to ensure that you benefit from our ABTA membership and Financial Failure Insurance, as well as the UK's consumer protection laws.

Please feel free to discuss these options with your consultant if you are not sure which office to book through, or if you have further questions about this.

What sets us apart?

Wild Wings Safaris is a small, owner-run company with a reputation for excellence and top-notch service delivery. We love what we do, and we love doing it well!

From your first enquiry until after your safari, we go out of our way to ensure that we exceed your expectations. Of course, a lot of companies say that, but very few can match our track record and review history.

We have won multiple awards on TripAdvisor and we invite you to check out our TripAdvisor reviews to see what our clients say about us.

We are also represented on SafariBookings.com , an independent online safari marketplace where we also have a growing list of great reviews, and have consistently been featured in their list of top-rated safari tour operators in South Africa.

Commitment Fee

Since 2005, Wild Wings Safaris has become one of the most highly-rated African safari operators. As a small company, we face one challenge which comes with being one of the best. Our stellar reputation translates into high demand for our expertise. At times, we are so inundated with new requests that we are forced to turn some people away. As a result, in order to assist more people and maintain the high standards of customer service we have become known for, we have found it necessary during busy periods to request a small commitment fee early on in the booking process. Your consultant will explain this in more detail, if applicable.

We'll Help You Design an Unforgettable Safari

We will custom design an itinerary that is perfect for you, after listening carefully to your interests and requirements. We understand what makes a safari special and work hard to make sure that your safari vacation is the trip of a lifetime.

Our aim is to ensure that all your questions are answered, that you are properly informed and prepared before departure, and that your safari runs safely, smoothly and seamlessly from start to finish. We pay careful attention to detail and take all the hassle out of planning and arranging your trip to Africa!

We are proud of our reputation for offering honest and expert advice, as well as excellent rates. We are not affiliated with any particular lodge or hotel group, so we can compare properties and give unbiased advice based on our own personal expertise and knowledge of the destinations.

Most Major Credit Cards Accepted

We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express card payments through our secure online payment facility, and, of course, we add no credit card surcharge.

Hand-picked, Local Consultants

Although we have offices in London and South Africa, all of our tour consultants are based in South Africa so they can travel often to stay in touch with local conditions.

We pride ourselves on our first-hand expertise. Collectively, we have been to almost all of the camps, lodges, hotels and game reserves we recommend. Our depth of local knowledge is matched by very few competitors and one of the key advantages of booking with us.

Our consultants are friendly, helpful and dedicated to helping you plan your trip of a lifetime. You will find that they are not pushy; they will listen to you and may also ask a lot of questions to make sure that the proposal they put together matches your exact requirements.

We pay our consultants well in order to retain the very best professionals in the industry - dedicated safari experts who are mature, responsive, friendly, patient, accurate, and honest. They pay attention to detail, love African travel and have vast destination knowledge.

Although our consultants are based in South Africa, any of them can be reached by phone, Skype and WhatsApp during office hours: 8 am - 5 pm CAT (Central African Time) or GMT +2. Calls to our UK office can be transferred to our South African office too during these times.

24-Hour Emergency Number and Emergency Response

When you book with us, you will receive a 24-hour, constantly manned number for you to get hold of us at any time of the day or night in case of an emergency or a very urgent matter to do with your booking.

In addition, depending on your travel destination, we include a subscription to the Secura Traveller App for the duration of your trip, which gives you a panic button on your phone and immediate access to a large network of trained medical emergency and armed response companies to get assistance to you in the shortest possible time, wherever you are.

Don't let this give you the wrong impression. Since 2005, having hosted many thousands of tourists, we have never had a safety or security incident, and not a single case of violent crime on any of our tours. But even if you slip and fall in the shower, help is always close at hand. You can enjoy complete peace of mind throughout your safari, knowing that we're only a phone call away to deal with any eventuality or situation.

Apart from your tour consultant, the quality of your safari experience is hugely reliant on the quality of the guide who leads your safari.

When you book with Wild Wings Safaris, in particular on our own Kruger Park safaris, you will have a mature, experienced, professional, passionate, English-speaking safari guide.

To see what a difference this makes, I invite you to read some of our online reviews and see what our guests have to say about the guides we use. The quality of our guides is one of the strongest selling points of our Kruger Park open vehicle safaris, yet it is something that is often overlooked.

Of course, we have little or no control over the specific guide you will get when visiting a private safari lodge but, since we have collectively visited almost all the lodges we sell, we have a good idea of the general guiding standard at each of the various safari lodges.

Our Vehicles

Wherever possible, all game drives are conducted in an open safari vehicle, specially designed to give you the best game viewing experience.

On our own Kruger Park safaris, we offer complimentary bottled water, blankets and a pair of courtesy binoculars on each game drive (but it is still best to bring your own binoculars). Transfers and tours are conducted in a luxury air-conditioned minibus.

All our vehicles are meticulously maintained and carry a comprehensive first aid kit as well as substantial passenger liability insurance.

Responsible Tourism

Low environment impact, high social impact.

Wild Wings Safaris is committed to being socially as well as environmentally responsible in our tourism practices. We strive to leave the minimum impact on the environment, while leaving behind a positive social impact. Social and environmental issues often go hand-in-hand.

We believe that environmental sustainability of tourism is tied to social responsibility and that educating local communities is one of the most important tasks in conservation.

Poverty is a threat to conservation efforts and many wild areas in Africa are under threat from local communities who are desperate for food and land. Education is the key to social upliftment and alleviation of poverty and is one of the most important strategies in long-term conservation efforts.

Education empowers people and opens the door to a better future. It is the only long-term solution to the problems of unemployment and poverty, which lie at the root of many other social ills in society.

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Nelson Mandela

This is why we have launched the Wild Wings Educational Trust , a non-profit trust fund that supports local education projects and gives African children a brighter future through better education. Our pledge is to match every contribution from our clients toward the Trust, up to 1% of their trip costs.

Donations to the trust are completely voluntary, and any amount is appreciated. Even 0.5% of your trip cost will make a huge difference.

To find out more about how we are improving education in our local communities and how you can support this effort, please visit the Trust's website, www.wildwingstrust.org .

How to contact us

To make an enquiry, please email us, phone us or complete the online enquiry form . All contact details are available on our contact page . Remember that you don't commit yourself to anything by making an enquiry.

Our advice, quotes and proposals are offered free of charge and there is no obligation to book with us even after you have received a proposal.

Of course, we hope that we will be able to impress you with our levels of service and destination knowledge, so that you'll decide to book with us in the end, even after shopping around and comparing other quotes.

If there is anything you're not sure of or would like more information about, please just ask. We're here to help.

This price range is intended as an estimate only. The exact rate will depend on type of room, date of travel, and number of people. Please contact us to secure the best available rate for this property.

Where to See Wild Dogs and Leopards in Botswana

Our Clients Say About Us

We had a two week holiday on Vancouver Island.. we went on a whale watching tour and saw Orcas, Humpbacks, Dahl porpoises, white striped Dolphins, seals and Sea lions. We then did a Grizzly bear r and saw lots of Grizzlies as well as loads of Black Bears. The highlight of the holiday was a three day kayaking trip which was fantastic. Kayaking with Orcas and Humpback whales was incredible Our holiday was completely organised by Wildlife Trails, and I can’t recommend them highly enough.. everything was planned to perfection and they made the entire holiday exactly what we asked for

We had a 13 day tour to India, mostly wildlife as this was what we wanted and a little element of city & culture. Day in Delhi staying at the Imperial, apart from noisy traffic getting to the el it was an iconic place to be, so much hitory and staff who had been there 30yrs and proud of what they did. then onto 5 days at Ranthambor - 2 incredible Tiger sightings with so many other species, onto Agra and the Taj Mahal and then the Saptura National Park. Great time was taken in the planning, we were given lots of options as to how to make the trip up including time of year and how to maximize wildlife sighting.

The main part of the trip was gorilla trekking in Uganda and Wildlife Trails had organised this very well and provided me with a comprehensive list of what to take which was great. The lodges were ely and seeing the other animals in Queen Elizabeth National Park, brilliant. Wildlife Trails organised the trip, including my flight very well. They also booked a hotel for me in Entebbe for the first and last night before flying home.

A 7 night stay at Katmai Wilderness Lodge which was amazing both for accommodation, food, very friendly and helpful staff and of course seeing bears in their natural habitat. A 4 night stay in eau which included a visit to Pack Creek where we had good sighting of bears and 2 Whale Watching tours where we saw Humpbacks and seals and Stellar Sealions. Wildlife Trails a small family concern run by Allan and Kirsty Blanchard. Very efficient and helpful. Listened to what we wanted and put together a good itinerary.

We went to Alaska, which Wildlife Trails sorted out for us. I chose Wildlife Trails because Allan was more knowledgeable than others I emailed, and more helpful. We went to Anchorage, Seward, er, Nikiski, Kodiak and Katmai. At Nikiski we stayed at Daniels Lake Lodge B&B in a log cabin by the lake. It was an amazing place and was the wildest and most remote of our journey. We saw a black bear and 3 coyote on the road. Had a great day out with Alaska West Air near there. We had bears right beside our boat at Big River Lakes near Wolverine Creek, saw bald eagles and plenty of salmon in the river. They gave us a scenic flight on the way back flying right over double glacier and its ice field - so close we almost landed on it. Really breath-taking. We booked up Juneau Mendenhall Glacier Ice Adventure Tour ourselves through Alaska Shore Excursions - local tour operator was Liquid Alaska Tours. This was excellent. We did canoeing, went in an ice cave under the glacier and used crampons to climb on top of it. A fantastic day out. Would recommend these. Also had a great day out at Brooks Falls watching the bears catching the salmon that were jumping up the waterfall. Well worth the trip. Wouldn't recommend Jayleen's Alaska whale watching trip. We didn't see anything but a lighthouse for most of the morning. Cost us a fortune for 6 hours when we saw more on the 2 hour cruise with Alaska Tales for a fraction of the cost. These are a new company. We didn't have many on the boat so didn't have to fight the crowds to see the whales and they took us straight to them so didn't waste any of our time. To see black bears close up we went to AnAn Bear observatory. A mother and cub came very close to where we were standing on a platform. At the other places we saw brown bears. A great trip all in all. As I stated above Wildlife Trails are very knowledgeable and helpful. They always replied quickly to any emails I sent asking them a lot of questions (some I should have been able to work out myself). When we had problems they were always contactable to help us sort them out. The ferry they booked for us went on strike but Wildlife Trails had sorted us out a flight in its place before we even knew there was a problem, so the holiday ran very smoothly. I would recommend Wildlife Trails to anyone and I have already booked another trip with them next year.

Africa safari tours

Intrepid travellers in safe viewing jeeps watch wildebeest cross the road in Ngorongoro Crater

Take a walk on the wild side on an African safari.

The word “safari” means “journey” in Swahili. And a safari in  Africa  is all about the journey. While seeing a leopard munch on a freshly caught gazelle or spying a curious lion cub venture away from its mother’s protective embrace will be highlights of your trip, you’ll discover the journey is as much a part of your trip as the destination.

The road-trip games you play with your new travel mates, the feeling of the wind (and maybe a little dust) in your hair when you’re travelling down long, winding roads, and the young Maasai boy who waved at you as you passed him along the road will stay with you long after you return.

Let's create an exclusive trip for your group.

Go on safari through Kruger National Park, one of the largest game reserves in  Southern Africa . This massive park is one of the premier safari spots in all of Africa and for good reason; it’s home to over 500 bird species, 100 species of reptile and 150 mammal species, including the Big Five and the endangered African wild dog.

Venture deep into the steamy jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in search of the rare mountain gorilla. With a local guide to lead you, you’ll trek into the forest to spend one unforgettable hour watching and hanging out with a family of gorillas. A close encounter with these gentle giants is an extraordinary African experience that will always stay with you.

The only thing more magical than witnessing the great wildebeest migration across the Serengeti? Seeing it from the sky in a hot air balloon. As the herds of wildebeest and thousands of other animals travel from Serengeti National Park to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara National Reserve, you can watch their journey and enjoy incredible views from a unique perspective.

The Okavango Delta has a unique system of waterways that are home to an immense array of wildlife. The best way to explore it is in a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe. Visit in May to September, when animals are confined to small islands created by the annual flood, making it easy to spot great herds of elephant and antelope, hippos, crocodiles, lions, cheetahs and more.

Kenya Wildlife Safari

On our safari trips you’ll stay in billion-star accommodation. That’s our way of saying you’re sleeping under the night sky, camping in the great outdoors. On our Basix and sections of Original trips, you’ll stay in two-person canvas tents that our crew will help you set up. And on our Comfort trips, you’ll be staying in permanent tented camps and lodges (think glamping instead of camping).

Campsite facilities can sometimes be basic, but wherever possible, we make sure there are Western-style toilets and warm water available. But you’ll find it’s worth sacrificing a warm shower or two when you’re waking up to sunrise over the Masai Mara.

On our safari trips, your main mode of transport is an overland truck, a purpose-built vehicle made for driving through Africa’s winding, and sometimes bumpy, country roads. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The trucks are also equipped with power outlets to charge your camera, phone and other devices on the go.

For more info on our overland trucks, see our  Africa overland page .

When is the best time to go on safari?

Generally speaking, January, February and June to October are the best times to go on safari in Africa. This is the dry season, so animals tend to come out into more open spaces in search of water, making them easier to spot. However, you’ll be able to spot animals all year round and you’ll enjoy fewer crowds if you travel outside peak season.

Where is the best place to go on safari?

The best place to go on safari depends on what kind of animals you’d like to see and what other activities you’d like to do in destination. We offer safaris to some of the best safari destinations in eastern and southern Africa, like Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and more.

Am I guaranteed to see animals on safari?

While we can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, you’d have to be profoundly unlucky to see no animals at all. On our trips, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of different species and your expert driver and local leader will help you spot animals.

What are the “Big 5”?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for safari?

Loose, light clothing in neutral colors is the best attire for a safari (dark colors will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our  ultimate Africa packing guide .

What type of food will be served on safari?

On our Basix trips you’ll have a cook travelling with you while you are on safari who will whip up a variety of local flavours and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there will be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. No matter what you’re craving, you definitely will not be going hungry on safari.

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have a private bathroom with flushing toilets and showers with warm water.

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water).

Can you accommodate accessibility requirements on your safari tours?

We are committed to making travel accessible to everyone, so we will work with you to assess whether you will be able to complete an existing itinerary, or whether we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs before you book. Please see our  accessible travel page  for more information.

What is internet and phone access like on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however Internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t miss it when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

This world and the animals that call it home are precious, and we believe it’s our responsibility to help preserve them. We do not include or condone any activities that exploit animals on our safari trips, including hunting, feeding or interacting with animals in any way. We believe that wild animals should be observed in the wild, from a respectful distance.

Some tips for being a wildlife-friendly traveller include never buying animal products, not participating in activities that include contact with the animals, and not including location tags on social media posts (some poachers have gone high-tech and use social media to track rare animals’ locations).

Why Choose a Safari Destination from the UK?

The UK’s position on the world map opens doors to several premier safari destinations, many of which are conveniently accessible via direct flights. Coupled with the Southern Hemisphere’s opposing seasons, the British winter months present an ideal opportunity to escape the cold in pursuit of warmer climes and vibrant wildlife sightings.

Which Country has the Best Safaris?

Determining which country has the best safaris is subjective and depends on what one seeks from their safari experience. However, Kenya often stands out for its unparalleled wildlife viewing opportunities, including the Great Migration in the Masai Mara. Its diverse ecosystems , ranging from savannahs to mountain highlands, coupled with the rich cultural heritage of the Maasai and Samburu peoples, make it a top contender.

Kenya’s well-established safari industry, commitment to conservation, and the variety of experiences it offers, from balloon safaris to guided bush walks, ensure that it holds a special place in the hearts of wildlife enthusiasts around the world.

Planning Your Safari from the UK

When planning your safari, consider the best time to visit, taking into account the seasonal variations and wildlife patterns of your chosen destination. Visa requirements and health considerations, such as vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis, are also crucial. Many UK-based tour operators specialize in African safaris , offering tailored experiences that cater to a wide range of interests and budgets.

African Safaris from the United Kingdom

African safaris from United Kingdom open the door to a world where the wild reigns supreme, seamlessly blending the convenience of travel with the allure of the unknown. With a blend of dramatic landscapes, rich Maasai culture, and the iconic Big Five, a Kenyan safari encapsulates the essence of Africa’s heart, making it a top choice for UK adventurers seeking the thrill of the wild.

Top 5 Safari Destinations Accessible from the United Kingdom

A safari adventure from the United Kingdom offers a gateway to the world’s most exhilarating wildlife encounters. With direct flights connecting the UK to iconic landscapes teeming with the Big Five and beyond, these top safari destinations promise unforgettable journeys into the heart of nature’s majesty.

1. Kenya: The Heart of the African Safari

Kenya stands as a beacon of safari experiences, offering everything from the dramatic spectacle of the Great Migration in the Masai Mara to the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya Safaris. Here, the Big Five roam freely, and the skies are a theatre of avian majesty. Cultural exchanges with the Maasai people add depth to an already enriching journey. With direct flights from London to Nairobi, Kenya’s treasures are but a night’s sky away.

2. South Africa: A World in One Country

South Africa’s diverse landscapes provide the backdrop for some of the most varied safari experiences in the world. The Kruger National Park, with its extensive network of game reserves, offers encounters with the Big Five, while the Eastern Cape’s malaria-free zones make it a perfect choice for family safaris. Direct flights to Johannesburg and Cape Town facilitate easy access to these wild wonders.

3. Tanzania: The Wild Beauty

Tanzania safari is a land of contrasts and natural splendor, home to the Serengeti’s endless plains and the Ngorongoro Crater’s wildlife-rich caldera. Witnessing the Great Migration here is a spectacle unrivaled, with millions of wildebeest and zebras traversing the landscape. Flights from the UK to Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro serve as your gateway to this unforgettable adventure.

4. Botswana: Exclusive and Untouched Wilderness

Botswana is the epitome of exclusive safari experiences, offering intimate encounters with nature in the pristine landscapes of the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park. The country is renowned for its commitment to conservation and high-quality, luxury safari lodges. Connections from the UK to Maun or Kasane are your entry point to this unspoiled wilderness.

5. Namibia: Dramatic Landscapes and Conservation Successes

Namibia’s unique offerings extend beyond wildlife to include some of the planet’s most striking landscapes, from the towering dunes of the Namib Desert to the salt pans of Etosha National Park. Here, conservation efforts have led to significant successes in wildlife preservation. Direct flights from the UK to Windhoek make this diverse country readily accessible.

How Many Days is Best for Safari?

The ideal duration for a safari largely depends on the depth of experience you seek, but generally, a span of 7 to 10 days is recommended. This timeframe allows for immersive wildlife viewing across different reserves, sufficient rest periods, and the opportunity to savor the diverse landscapes and cultural experiences.

Shorter safaris of 4 to 5 days can still offer a glimpse into the wild’s wonders, while longer expeditions of two weeks or more provide a comprehensive exploration of varied ecosystems and animal behaviors, enhancing the overall adventure.

Sustainability and Conservation

Choosing eco-friendly lodges and responsible safari operators not only enhances your experience but also contributes to the conservation of wildlife and the well-being of local communities. The safari industry plays a pivotal role in preserving Africa’s natural heritage, and by making informed choices, you can be part of these vital efforts.

Accommodation Options

From the luxury of a lodge to the rustic charm of a tented camp, accommodation options on safari are designed to suit every taste and budget. Booking the right place can elevate your safari from memorable to truly magical, providing comfort and proximity to the heart of the wilderness.

Each safari destination offers its own unique allure, from Kenya’s cultural richness to Namibia’s stark beauty. As you embark on your journey from the UK to these distant lands, remember that the true essence of a safari lies in the connection it fosters with the natural world. In the spirit of responsible travel, let’s ensure these wild places remain for generations to come.

Tailor Made Safaris

Popular safaris, east & central africa, southern africa, set departures, top destinations, indian ocean islands, “kenya offers so much more than karen blixen’s ‘out of africa’”.

safari tour operators in uk

“The Masai Mara is the most photogenic safari location in Africa and the country offers a huge variety, both in landscapes and inhabitants!”

Discover the diversity of kenya safaris: a world of wildlife and wonder.

Kenya safaris has it all; from the tropical coral seas and white beaches of the Indian Ocean to the colder climate of the western highlands, from the dry savannahs of the south to the semi-desert around Lake Turkana in the north. This variety allows for many different safari options and exceptional experiences for all travellers.

The Masai Mara National Reserve: The Heart of the Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem

The most famous location is the Masai Mara National Reserve, part of the huge Serengeti-Mara ecosystem and home to the highest concentration of large wildlife on the planet! The annual migration of over 2 million wildebeest and many zebra is ongoing throughout the year. The herds move in a generally clockwise route across the plains of the Serengeti and the Mara following the rains. The famous Mara River crossings usually take place in both Kenya and Tanzania from July to October each year, in a spectacle often referred to as the greatest show on earth!

High Altitude Safaris: Cooler Climate and Low Malaria Risk

From a traveller’s perspective, an important fact is that many safari destinations in Kenya are at a high altitude, around 2000m above sea level. This results in two significant benefits, compared to other safari destinations:

1) it doesn’t get as hot as it can in other regions, in fact, it could be chilly a night, which is great!

2) there is a really low risk of malaria in these high-altitude areas, making for a good destination for families with small children.

Kenya’s Wildlife Conservation Success: A Ban on Trophy Hunting

Another very interesting aspect to Kenya is that a trophy hunting ban has now been in place for more than 40 years. This has resulted in wildlife being trusting of vehicles, making them more approachable in certain areas. As good genes in terms tusk and horn size have been retained rather than selected for hunting, there are some magnificent specimens of certain animals!

SAFARI FRANK does not support overly close interaction with some animals such as cheetah’s climbing on vehicles. However, respectfully sharing space with relaxed large animals is a fantastic experience, not possible in many other places.

The Conservancy Model: A Win-Win for Wildlife and Communities

Kenya also boasts another great conservation success story- the Conservancy model in which private companies and local community landowners collaborate in conservation. There are a number of different examples in operation, but in essence, the local communities agree to make the land available for conservation and eco-tourism in exchange for revenue, employment and even grazing benefits. These models do sometimes result in tourists seeing wildlife and cattle in close proximity. However, this is a small price to pay as the reality is that was it not for this arrangement, there would have been no wildlife in these areas at all and much more pressure on the National Parks. The method also allows for traditional pastoralist cultures to thrive. A great outcome for all!

A kenya video to inspire your safari:

Fast facts about kenya.

Why we like Kenya as a safari destination:

  • The long history of safari culture and the close-knit safari community.
  • The conservancies are great conservation models working with local communities to ensure that they receive real benefits.
  • It is home to reserves at high altitudes reducing the risk of malaria for children.
  • The varied landscapes-from the famous Masai Mara to the WILD Lake Turkana, Kenya has it all!
  • The Masai Mara Reserve, the most photogenic safari destination on earth!
  • The easy access from the United States and Europe with direct flights to Nairobi.

Explore Kenya: From the Masai Mara to Nairobi

We have divided Kenya into 6 safari regions, namely the Masai Mara and private conservancies, Laikipia, Amboseli & Tsavo, Northern Kenya, the Kenyan coast and Nairobi.

Safaris in Kenya take place almost exclusively by flying between these locations through scheduled flights leaving from Nairobi. A typical safari would visit three of the locations,  with one of them being the Mara, especially for first-timers!

Kenya has a long history as a safari destination and has been made famous by numerous writers, movies and TV shows over the years. It is well loved for its hospitality, many family-owned safari operators and excellent service!

When to Go on a Safari in Kenya

Kenya is on the equator and as such there can be some variations in weather. It also comprises of some safari locations with high elevations, up to 2000m above sea level, which results in mild to chilly temperatures at these locations year-round. In certain areas, notably Laikipia, it is not uncommon to have a lit fireplace in your room, year-round. Visitors to these areas are often surprised at how cold it can be and warm clothes are recommended for game drives.

Kenya, similar to Tanzania, has four main seasons. It is considered an all-year destination, but the season you visit will greatly impact your experience, so be sure to choose the correct season for the experience you would like.

The ‘long rainy season’ (March, April & May)

This is when Kenya receives the majority of its rainfall and it is fairly consistent each year. Rain typically falls in heavy downpours each afternoon. Safaris at this time of the year can be complicated as road conditions deteriorate and animals disperse from water sources. If you go on safari during this time you may get a bit wet and muddy, but it is all part of the fun!

On the plus side, many baby animals are born, the skies are at their prettiest and environment is bursting with new life. It’s also the quietest time of year to travel so you will have an exclusive experience and the lack of other travellers results in great deals to be had.

The ‘short rainy season’ (November & December)

These rains are not as intense as the main rainy season and can be unpredictable and vary considerably from year to year. A safari at this time of the year can be very enjoyable provided you don’t mind the chance of a little rain.

The ‘long dry season’ (June to October)

This is the peak season for tourism in Kenya and rainfall is unusual with days normally clear and sunny. Keep in mind that temperatures vary depending on location and altitude. In high altitude areas like the Masai Mara and Laikipia, it may be pretty cold, especially on early morning game drives! This is considered the best time for a safari as animals congregate around water sources, making their viewing more predictable.

Between August and September, the annual wildebeest migration starts to cross the Mara River, an event which is on many traveller’s bucket list!

The ‘short dry season’ (January & February)

This is the period between the short and long rainy seasons and rain cannot be totally ruled out. It is, however, a great time of the year to travel. Many areas are still green from the short rains, so photographs are clear, crisp and will have vibrant colours. Birding is also at its peak as migratory birds have now arrived.

Kenya Safari Insider Tip

Stay in the private conservancies around the Masai Mara National Reserve, away from the crowds and where your stay will contribute directly to the conservation of the area!

Most of the lodges in the conservancies offer day trips into the Reserve to experience the migration’s river crossings if that is on your bucket list. In the conservancies it is also possible to drive off-road, conduct night-drives and do walking safaris, adding other dimensions to the experience.
