SA Rugby (Saru) has confirmed a World Cup trophy tour with the history-making Springbok rugby team in four provinces, with more satellite tours set for next year.

The Springboks arrive home on Tuesday morning from their successful campaign in France. The four-day tour will commence on Thursday and be wrapped up on Saturday.

South Africa team beat the All Blacks 12-11 in the final at Stade de France in Paris on Saturday night.

Saru said the tour will take place in Gauteng, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

“The tour will start in Pretoria, Johannesburg and Soweto — concluding at FNB Stadium — on Thursday, and take in Cape Town (Friday) and Durban (Saturday) before concluding in the Eastern Cape (East London) on Sunday,” Saru said in a statement.

“The locations have been selected for population size in the first three instances and because of the Eastern Cape’s rugby significance in the fourth.”

“Satellite tours to Bloemfontein, Nelson Mandela Bay and other centres will be scheduled for 2024. Such tours after the 2019 victory had to be abandoned because of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

The federation said route maps and times for each tour will be announced later.

The team will attend the gala World Rugby Awards ceremony in Paris on Sunday night before leaving France for South Africa on Monday morning.

Ireland's Rugby World Cup 2027 chances hit after major changes

T he path to Rugby World Cup glory has become even more challenging for nations with smaller player pools, such as Ireland. This follows the announcement by World Rugby of an expansion in the number of teams to 24, a shift to six groups of four teams and a 16-team knockout format for RWC 2027 in Australia.

This is a departure from the previous system of four groups of six teams with eight teams progressing to the quarter-finals. Consequently, the pool stages will be shortened by two weeks, while the knockout stages will be extended by one week.

The RWC 2027 will span six weeks, compared to last year's RWC 2023 which lasted seven weeks. This change presents both opportunities and risks; the pool stages will pose little threat to the major rugby playing nations, but the introduction of an extra game will increase the stakes in the knockouts.

The ripple effect of this is that none of the Six Nations sides (Ireland, France, England, Wales, Scotland, Italy) or the Rugby Championship members (New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Argentina) are likely to be eliminated at the pool stages with this format. This could result in the first three weekends being largely procedural - not unlike the recent Rugby Sevens competition at the Olympics where 12 teams competed in the pool stages and eight advanced to the knockouts.

The pressure is on come the RWC 2027's Last 16, with teams facing the daunting task of securing four consecutive wins over successive weekends extra-time included if needed to claim the World Cup trophy, reports the Irish Mirror .

It's a historical moment for Ireland as they've never before played four international games back-to-back across weekends in the history of the Four/Five/Six Nations or during a summer tour.

While it's uncommon for Ireland to have four matches lined up over consecutive weekends in November, this year sees an additional fixture slotted into the schedule.

The Irish team is set to face New Zealand on Nov 8, Argentina on Nov 15, Fiji on Nov 23, and in a special match to mark the 150th anniversary of Irish Rugby, they'll go up against Australia on Nov 30.

Ireland's track record at the Rugby World Cup has been less than stellar, having never made it past the quarter-finals, with the painful defeat to Argentina in 1999 in Lens serving as a stark reminder of their struggles that match effectively being a Last 16 clash.

A former Ireland international commented on the nation's historical difficulties at the World Cup: "Ireland have always struggled as World Cups progressed, were in trouble when they began to sustain in-play injuries and were unwilling to stand players down but have them try to play through," and added, "Or to put it another way, successive coaches were unwilling to utilise their wider squad.

"We have a history of having players along for the entire World Cup trip who don't play at all and, in another set of cases, get less than, say, 30 minutes and even then it is on some pudding of a match that Ireland are winning by a cricket score."

"The big rugby nations, the previous multiple World Cup winners such as South Africa and New Zealand, bring two players with starting capabilities for each position."

"They may have a 'first-choice XV' but the others are expected to start at least one game along the way."

"Those nations have almost always started a dozen or so 'others' in the easiest of the pool games allowing their potential semi-final and final line-ups clear rest."

"This has not been something Ireland coaches have embraced in the past and we have, and results are the proof, paid the price."

Time is running out for players to qualify for the Solheim Cup, but who needs to impress over the next fortnight to feature for Team Europe in this year’s contest?

The biennial event takes place at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club from September 13-15, live on Sky Sports, where Team Europe will aim to retain the trophy that they've held since a dramatic victory at Gleneagles in 2019.

They followed it up with a historic success on away soil in Ohio in 2021, before Suzann Pettersen led them to retaining the trophy last September in Spain after the first 14-14 draw with the United States in the tournament's history.

Pettersen retains her role as captain for this year's contest, with just two events remaining for players to earn qualification points or try and force their way into Team Europe's squad.

The Qualifying period for the 2024 Solheim Cup began at the Aramco Team Series - New York event in 2022 and will end later this month, with the ISPS HANDA Women's Scottish Open from Thursday and next week's AIG Women's Open the last two tournaments left to try and secure a spot.

Beginner's guide to the Solheim Cup

When is golf next live on Sky Sports?

Charley Hull - who has featured in every Solheim Cup since 2013 - currently leads the European Solheim Cup Team points list, having posted seven top-three finishes during the qualification campaign, with Sweden's Linn Grant having a narrow advantage in second spot.

Carlota Ciganda is the only player in the top 15 of the European Team points standings not currently scheduled to feature at the ISPS Handa Women's Scottish Open, with plenty of the chasing pack still trying to break into an automatic qualification spot.

Golf

Olympic silver medallist Esther Henseleit is within five points of Grant, while Maja Stark - part of the 2023 team at Finca Cortesin - and Alexandra Forsterling , a four-time winner over the past year, are also close behind.

Former Solheim Cup winner Bronte Law currently tops the Ladies European Tour Order of Merit and is inside the top-10 in the standings, along with defending Women's Scottish Open champion Celine Boutier.

Live Ladies European Tour Golf

What about from the world rankings?

Boutier and Hull are both inside the world's top 11 and will be guaranteed a Team Europe return via the world rankings, with Stark (world No 23) and Ciganda (world No 33) also well placed to qualify via that method.

Leona Maguire (world No 31), Madelene Sagstrom (world No 35) and Georgia Hall (world No 40) currently occupy the other automatic qualification spots from the Rolex Rankings, with Henseleit their closest challenger and 42nd in the world rankings as things stand.

Highlights from the final day of the Aramco Team Series London from the Centurion Club.

Anna Nordqvist (world No 66) is the next European in the world rankings and would be a likely captain's pick should she fail to qualify automatically, having been part of every Solheim Cup team since 2009.

Albane Valenzuela (world No 69), Forsterling (world No 74) and Perrine Delacour (world No 78) are the next three highest-ranked European players in the world rankings, with Gemma Dryburgh and Emily Kristine Pedersen - both captain's picks fo r last year's team - also sit inside the top 100.

Golf

Sweden's Linnea Strom - the only current European winner on the LPGA Tour this season - and Morgane Metraux , who held a share lead after three rounds of the Olympics before fading on the final day, will be among those looking for a big finish to the qualification campaign.

Which players will likely feature for Team USA?

Team USA's qualification campaign also ends at the AIG Women's Open, with the top seven players in the US Solheim Cup points list, the top two player in the world rankings then joined by three captain's picks from Stacy Lewis.

Take a look back at World No 1 Nelly Korda's incredible campaign as she eyes up her first U.S. Women's Open title.

World No 1 Nelly Korda , two-time major winner Lilia Vu and Ally Ewing are already guaranteed their spots via the points list, with Lauren Coughlin and Allisen Corpuz the next two in the standings and all-but assured of qualifying for Team USA.

Megan Khang and Andrea Lee round off the seven spots as things stand, with Rose Zhang and Alison Lee the closest challengers and both featuring in Scotland this week.
