8. Celebrate Diwali in Times Square

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, is the most important holiday in India.

Every fall in Times Square, the largest Diwali celebration outside of India will take place.

Times Square will be filled with the sounds, sights, and delicious foods of South Asia and India.

9. Have a Blast at the Village Halloween Parade  

For decades, the Village Halloween Parade has attracted thousands of New Yorkers.

They come to watch the floats and art troupes that flood 6th Avenue with the most creative Halloween costumes you will ever see.

The parade starts at 7 p.m. on October 31st. The route runs along 6th Avenue from Spring Street in SoHo to 16th Street in Chelsea. ( map ).

Attend an Old-Time Radio Show Taping | Not confirmed

In October, the award-winning, critically-acclaimed Radio Theatre, in Greenwich Village, celebrates its 22nd year of live performances.

In year's past ticket-holders were able to watch a live on-stage taping of of H.P. Lovecraft's spine-tingling The Whisperer in Darkness along with tapings of stories by Poe and Hitchcock.

Visit Governors Island

This recreational, car-free oasis just 7 minutes from Manhattan is open through October. 

Although you will have to pay $3 for the ferry, you don't need to pay for anything else once you are there. Endless activities await you and your family at this playground for people of all ages!

Atlantic Antic

Known by locals as the Antic, this is one of the biggest street fairs in NYC. This year the festival takes place on October 1st.

It's free to attend, and it is a very family-friendly activity as well.

Columbus Day Parade 

This is the world's largest celebration of Italian-American culture with a route running along 5th Avenue from 47th Street and 72nd Street ( map ).

There will be over 130 marching groups including bands, floats, and Italian heritage and cultural groups marching proudly along the route.

The parade takes place October 914h from 11:30-3:30.

Open House New York (OHNY)   

OHNY is an annual event that gives the public free access to over 250 of the city’s architecturally and culturally significant buildings that are not generally open to the public.

This event is scheduled for October 18th-20th.

Among them are the Woolworth Building , Alice Austen House ,  Grand Central Terminal , and many more locations which are included in our Lower Manhattan tours and our Greenwich Village tours . 

FAMILY-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES

Pumpkin Picking at Decker Farm 

On weekends in October, visit Decker Farm in Staten Island to get a true Halloween seasonal experience.

There will be hayrides, face painting, farm animals, arts and crafts, a corn maze, and even a pumpkin patch at a historic working farm.

ComicCon  welcomes children of all ages but ticket availability is somewhat limited depending on age. 

It's held on October 72th - 20th at the Jacob Javitz Convention Center. 

Kids 5 and under can attend for free. Kids 13 and older will need to purchase an adult ticket.

When I moved to Manhattan, I was so excited to spend October in New York City. After nine years in the desert of Phoenix, I was beyond ready to see the leaves change colors, experience the chill of an autumn breeze, and, of course, celebrate Halloween in the big city. 

In a melting pot of 8.83 million people, you know there are going to be plenty of options for things to do to kick off the fall season. From annual festivals to holiday events and the start of a new sports season, there are countless things to do to make your trip to New York in October a trip to remember. So whether you’re looking for spooky excursions or need a good idea for a fun fall date, I’ve got the best activities in town for your New York City October itinerary.

Is October A Good Time To Visit New York City?

In October, you’ve just missed the hot, humid, tepid weather and are just in time for crisp, cool, light-sweater-wearing weather.

By October, the crowded streets full of summer tourists have thinned out. If you’re planning on visiting any of the big attractions like the Empire State Building, you can expect much shorter lines and fewer people in the background of your photos. Of course, this is still New York City, so there will never be a time when there are no tourists around, but if you’re looking for a month where the weather is beautiful and the crowds are thinner, October is the winner. 

New York City October Weather

October marks the beginning of autumn weather in New York City. By now, the heat and humidity of the summer have burned away and the city is left with a mix of warm and cool days averaging around 64°F. The nights are cooler, hovering around 50°F— the perfect time to break out your comfy fall sweaters. 

There are fewer rainy days than in the summer, with average precipitation in October in New York City being about 3.85 inches, making October one of the driest months of the year. This is great because less rain means more time to go out and explore.

New York Prices in October

October isn’t the most expensive time to visit New York City (that’s June and July), but it isn’t the cheapest either (January and February). While the summer tourists have all gone home, there are still a lot of events happening in New York City in October. There’s the New York Marathon, the many festivals being held, and Halloween festivities, which could persuade companies to raise their prices. 

For the most part, October isn’t the most expensive or the cheapest time to visit New York City. Instead, it falls right in the middle. In my opinion, the beautiful fall weather offsets the extra cost of visiting New York City in October versus a cheaper (and much colder) month like February.

Is it better to visit New York in October or November?

In November, the fall weather is going to drop by about 10°F, becoming closer to 55°F during the day and 40°F at night. The fall leaves will be mostly changed by the end of October, and the trees will start to go bare by mid-November. Most of the fall festivals will be over by November, and holiday events will just be starting.

Overall, the time of year that is best for you to visit New York City really depends on you and why you’re visiting. However, in my opinion, come to New York City in October to witness the changing of the leaves and the crisp, autumn weather, or wait until December when the city is lit up for the holidays.

My top 10 favorite things to do in new york in october.

Anyone who knows me knows that fall is my favorite time of year, and October is my favorite month in the fall. I’m one of those people who insist that autumn (and spooky season) begin no later than September 1— whatever the Farmer’s Almanac says be damned! And I also got married in October, simply because it is the best month ever.

So, with my intense love of all things fall and October, you know I’m going to have my favorite things to do in New York City during October. And these are them:

Central Park in New York City in October

One of the best things to do in New York City in October is to see the leaves change colors. And one of the best places to do that is in New York’s most famous park— Central Park! 

Towards the end of October through the beginning of November, the ordinarily green leaves in Central Park will begin to turn into multiple shades of yellows, oranges, and reds. This makes the park one of the most epic places to see fall foliage in New York City.

When to go:  Mid-October to the beginning of November.

Cost:  Free!

Medieval Festival at Fort Tryon Park

Who doesn’t love a good renaissance festival? I know I do! This is why going to the Medieval Festival in Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan is one of my favorite things to do in New York City in October. 

Fort Tryon is a magical forest (figuratively anyway, although probably literally, too, I bet) tucked away in one of the most modern cities in the world. It’s the perfect place for a renaissance festival because the thick forest trees make you feel like you’re in the middle of an enchanted wood. Plus, there’s a castle hidden in the center of the park. As part of the MET, the castle at the Cloisters is where the museum keeps its medieval art.

When to go:  October 2.

Cost:  It’s free!

Location and how to get there:  Located in Hudson Heights and Inwood in Uptown Manhattan. To get there, take the A train to 190th.

Tour the Catacombs at St. Patrick’s Cathedral

Visit tunnels that are generally bared off from the public during a 90-minute candlelight tour of the catacombs under St. Patrick’s Cathedral . 

This creepy excursion is perfect for anyone visiting New York City in October who wants to add something a little spookier to their itinerary. 

The catacombs in New York are over 200 years old and are the final resting place for many prominent Catholics from the area. 

When to go:  Friday through Monday by reservation only .

Cost:  $37 per person

Location and how to get there:  266 Mulberry St, New York, NY 10012. 

Take the B, D, F, M, or 6 train to Broadway-Lafayette St/Bleecker St; or the R or W train to Prince St.

Visit the New York Botanical Garden

The New York Botanical Garden is a pleasure to visit any time of the year, but especially in October because that’s when they break out their fall festivities. During Fall-O-Ween, the Botanical Garden has different fall-based events every weekend and on any day of the week, the Botanical Garden is another great place to see the leaves of New York change color.

When to go:  Check out the Garden’s calendar for a list of special events. 

Cost:  $30 for adults to enter, though special events may cost extra.

Location and how to get there:  2900 Southern Blvd., Bronx, NY 10458. 

Take the B, D, or 4 train to Bedford Park Blvd. Station. From the station, you have a choice of either dating the Bx26 bus to the Garden’s Mosholu Entrance OR walking eight blocks downhill on Bedford Park Blvd to the same entrance.

Day trip to Sleepy Hollow

Made famous by Washington Irving’s gothic horror story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow , the town of Sleepy Hollow is actually a real place and it’s not that far away from New York City. Only about an hour’s drive north, Sleepy Hollow is the perfect destination for a day trip from New York City in October. 

Though there isn’t a real headless horseman, there are still plenty of thrilling adventures to be had when visiting Sleepy Hollow. From haunted hayrides to cemetery tours to street fairs, there is something for everyone in this little historic town. 

When to go:  Use this calendar to plan your day trip to Sleepy Hollow.

Cost:  Ultimately, it depends on what you do in town. This excursion could be as cheap as the cost of gas or as expensive as you choose to make it.

You’ll need a car for this day trip since Sleepy Hollow is about an hour up the I-87.

New York Comic Con

Get your nerd on at the New York Comic Con. 

New York Comic Con is the second largest comic convention in the United States (following San Diego), and it’s the largest on the east side of the country. Every year they have amazing panelists and vendors and its an awesome opportunity to dress up as your favorite comic book character!

When to go:  This year, the convention is held from October 6 – 9.

Cost:  $67.75 per person, per day.

Location and how to get there: 429 11th Ave, New York, NY 10018.

Take the 7 train to 34th St-Hudson Yards. Or take the A, C, E, or LIRR 34 St-Penn Station.

Apple picking

The best time to pick apples is right when summer fades into fall, which means that early October is the prime apple picking season.

You might be thinking, “You can’t pick apples in New York City.” And, well, you’d be right to think so. In the concrete jungle, there isn’t much room for apple orchards. BUT, less than an hour’s drive away there are plenty of farms ripe for the picking. And, who doesn’t love a beautiful scenic drive, anyway?

When to go:  Late September through early October.

Cost:  $15 – $60 depending on how much produce you want to pick.

Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival

If you’re a foodie then this is an event made for you. NYCWFF is an annual event featuring Food Network personalities like Ted Allen and Rachel Ray. It also includes highly-rated local chefs and restaurants. In the past, the food festival has hosted fun events like a trivia-oriented food fight with Guy Fieri and the competitive Blue Moon Burger Bash.

When to go:  October 13 – 16.

Cost:  Cost is determined by the event you attend.

Location and how to get there: This is a city-wide festival that takes place at different restaurants and locations, depending on the event.

Oktoberfest

So you’re coming to New York City this October instead of Munich, Germany. That’s okay! You can still experience Oktoberfest, right here in the states! 

Watermark Bar hosts an annual Oktoberfest that is more than a month-long, from September through the end of October. Complete with lederhosen, giant pretzels, and, of course, authentic German beer. 

When to go:  September 2nd — October 31st. 

Cost: General admission is free!

Location and how to get there: Watermark Bar, Pier 15, 78 South Street, New York, NY 10038.

Take the 2 or 3 train to Wall Street/ William Street and walk to Watermark Bar from the station. 

Queens County Farm Corn Maze

Like pumpkin spice lattes, corn mazes are a staple of the fall. Queens County Farm Museum is the longest continually farmed site in New York State, and their annual corn maze is the only corn maze in New York City!

When to go:  September 16 through October 29.

Cost:  $13.74 per adult ticket. 

Location and how to get there: 73-50 Little Neck Parkway, Floral Park, NY 11004.

It’s easiest to get to the farm by car and they have free parking. You can also take the train. Take the 1 to the E and get off at Kew Gardens-Union Tpke then transfer to the bus at Union Tpke/Queens Blvd then get off at Union Tpke/252 St and walk about a half mile to the farm.

Fun things to do in New York City in October

No matter what time of year you visit New York City, you’re bound to have a good time, but here are some extra fun ways to spend your vacation in New York City in October.

Attend a concert at Madison Square Garden

In the fall, the heat of the summer is over and nightlife in New York City truly takes off. While it’s fun to see a concert at Madison Square Garden any time of the year, this is an exceptional activity to do in the fall.

Location and how to get there: 4 Pennsylvania Plaza, New York, NY 10001.

Take the A, C, or E train to 34th St – Penn Station; OR, take the B, D, F, or M to 34th St- Herold Sq.

Attend a concert at Radio City Music Hall

Built during the Great Depression and made popular by the high-kicking Rockettes, Radio City Music Hall’s art deco walls are a grand piece of New York City history and a fun place to visit in New York City in October. They do more than dance shows (though those are great!). You can see music, comedy, art, and theater on this historic stage.

When to go:  Visit Radio City Music Hall’s website to pick out a show that piques your interest!

Cost:  Varies by the show.

Location and how to get there: 1260 6th Ave, New York, NY 10020.

Take the 1 or the 2 to 50th St Station. Or, the E, B, D, F, or M to 47-50 Sts- Rockefeller Center. Walk from the train station.

Attend the New York Burlesque Festival

Sparkling costumes, talented dancers, and an art form that’s been around in the United States for almost 150 years, what’s not to love about burlesque? In October, the annual New York Burlesque Festival celebrates the art of the tease and it’s bound to be a great time.

When to go : September 29 – October 2

Cost:  Tickets start at $24.80 and go up depending on the venue and type of ticket. See the official website for more details.

Go to a farmer’s market

October is the time of harvest and so it’s the perfect time to get some delicious vegetables at a farmer’s market. There are more than 50 markets hosted around the city. 

Visiting the farmers market also makes a great date, because you can pick out all the ingredients for a romantic dinner, then go home and make it with your sweetheart. How cute is that?!

When to go:  There’s a farmer’s market open any day of the week. Use this map to find one near you on a day when you’re available.

Cost:  Varies depending on how much produce you purchase.

Fall foliage cruise on the Hudson

Escape the city life and hop on board a boat for a three-hour tour (I promise this won’t end up like Gilligan!) Feel the wind in your hair as your cruise along the Hudson River. You’ll be able to see the fall colors from a spectacular perspective as you watch the changing leaves from the water.

When to go:  Saturdays and Sundays in October.

Cost:  $106 per person.

Location and how to get there: Chelsea Piers, Pier 62, located across from West 22nd Street and Hudson River in Manhattan, New York.

Take the A, C, or E train to 23rd Street.

Halloween in New York City

In a city as big as New York, you know we’re gonna go big for the spooky season. Halloween is a hit in this town, and so you have plenty of options for thrilling activities to add to your NYC itinerary . 

Village Halloween Parade

Join the Halloween event of the nation at this chilling bash. The Village Halloween Parade started with modest beginnings in 1974 when it was an event for children to show off their costumes. Fast forward to the present day and the Village Halloween Party now draws thousands of people to 6th avenue for a mega monster mash. 

When to go:  October 31 at 7 pm.

Location and how to get there: Visit the Village Halloween Parade’s website where they have put together very detailed directions on how to arrive and watch the parade.

I dare you to enter Blood Manor

Are you brave enough to enter New York City’s premiere haunted attraction? A portal has opened in this ghoulish house and has let in all kinds of spooky spirits. Do you think you can get in and out of Blood Manor without dying from fright? 

When to go:  Open all weekends in October and the first weekend in November. 

Cost:  $40 per ticket.

Location and how to get there: 359 Broadway New York, NY 10013.

Take the 1 or 2 train to Franklin Street Station. Or take the N, Q, R, W, J, Z, 4, or 6 train to Canal Street Station. Walk to Blood Manor from the station.

Headless Horseman Haunted Attractions

This terrifying immersive experience has been named #1 in America and boasts of scaring more than 1 million guests. Brave the night as you walk through one or more of ten different haunted attractions located on this historic (and probably actually haunted) manor from 1793. Between corn mazes, haunted houses, and escape rooms, there is something for everyone on this 65-acre property.

When to go:  Open every weekend in October.

Cost:  $49.95 per ticket plus service charge and tax, if purchased online. $64.95 per ticket plus tax if purchased at the door.

Location and how to get there: 778 Broadway, Route 9W, Ulster Park, NY 12487.

This Halloween event must be accessed by car as there is no train or bus route directly to the property.

Roosevelt Island Small Pox Hospital Ruins

This is the closest you will ever get to Arkham Asylum in real life. Blackwell’s Island (now known as Roosevelt Island) in New York City provided a place to keep patients suffering from smallpox far away from the other city residents. In the 1950s, this historic, gothic revival-style building was abandoned and fell into ruin. It was then declared a historic landmark and, though never restored, you can visit the creepy ruins of the old Roosevelt Island Small Pox Memorial Hospital today.

Merchant’s House Museum

While the two “haunted” attractions listed above might have actors trained to scare your pants off, how do you feel about visiting a home with real ghosts? The Tredwell family lived in the Merchant’s House Museum long before it was ever a museum, and some say they never left. During the month of October, you can take a candlelight ghost tour of this real-life haunted mansion.

When to go:  Tours are available year-round, but the candlelight ghost tour is only available four nights of the year, from October 26 through 29.

Cost:  $45 per person.

Take the N or R train to 8th Street; the 6 train to Astor Place; or B, D, F, M to Broadway/Lafayette Station. Walk to the house from the station.

Greenwich Village Ghost Tour

Get to know the haunted history of New York City and possibly even see a ghost in one of New York’s most famous parks. This intimate ghost tour takes a literary twist as the tour guide gives you the spooky inside scoop on Edgar Allen Poe.

When to go: Fridays and Saturdays throughout October.

Haunted farm in Queens County Farm

One of the best family-friendly Halloween events in the city, wear your costume and go trick-or-treating with farm animals on the 47-acre farm at Queens County Farm Museum . 

When to go: Sunday, October 30 from 11 am to 4 pm.

Cost:  $20 per person. Free for kids 3 and under.

It’s easiest to get to the farm by car and they have free parking. You can also take the train. Take the 1 to the E and get off at Kew Gardens – Union Tpke then transfer to the bus at Union Tpke/Queens Blvd then get off at Union Tpke/252 St and walk about a half mile to the farm.

Jack O’Lantern Festival

Imagine walking through an 18th-century landscape while listening to an original soundtrack and watching 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins light up against the darkness of the night. Well, if that sounds like your thing, you don’t have to imagine it— just visit the Jack O’Lantern Festival in Hudson Valley! Plus, all proceeds go to the Historic Hudson Valley non-profit, so you’re doing a good deed by going!

When to go:  September 16 — November 20. 

Cost:  $44 per person.

Location and how to get there: 525 S Riverside, Croton-on-Hudson, NY 10520.

It’s easiest to get to the festival by car since the drive is an hour north of the city. But, you can also get there by train if you’re willing to make a few transfers.

Take the 1 to Marble Hill-335 St then transfer to the Marble Hill bus. You’ll get off at Croton-Harmon then walk about a mile to the festival.

Nighttime excursions in New York City in October

The weather in New York City in October at night is perfect. It’s just chilly enough for a jacket, but not too cold that it’s uncomfortable. And the New York lights at night are mmwha! *chefs kiss*. There’s a reason they call this the “city that never sleeps”. Add a few of these nighttime excursions to your itinerary list to make sure you soak up all that New York City has to offer. 

Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks open up

There are few more iconic images of New York City at Christmas time than the ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center. But did you know that it’s actually in October that most of New York City’s ice skating rinks open up? Skip the crowds and go ice skating in October. It’s the perfect nighttime excursion.

When to go: Any day of the week starting in mid to late October.

New York City At Night Tour Bus

Stroll through one of the coolest parks in New York City, The High Line (a park created on an old train track), before hopping aboard a bus to see New York’s most famous monuments like Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and the neighborhoods of SoHo and Chinatown illuminated in the night.

When to go:  Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Cost:  Tickets start at $59 per person.

Take the 1 or 2 train to 50th Street Station. Or, the N, R, or W train to 49th Street.

New York City Speakeasy Tour

In the 1920s the government banned the selling and drinking of alcohol and speakeasies became popular. Since then, they are still popular with many clubs following the “secret bar” theme. But those aren’t what you’ll be visiting with this tour. Instead, you’ll get to drink in some of the original speakeasies that were established a hundred years ago during the prohibition era.

When to go:  Monday and Wednesday nights.

Cost:  $36 per person.

Directly outside 50th St station next to the Gershwin Theater.

Walk the Brooklyn Bridge

Built in 1883, The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Did you know that the entire thing is walkable? In fact, it’s sort of a New York City right of passage to walk across the bridge. And if you walk the Brooklyn Bridge at night, you’ll see a spectacular, one-of-a-kind view of the New York City skyline.

When to go:  The Brooklyn Bridge is accessible 24 hours a day!

Location and how to get there: Brooklyn Bridge, New York, NY 10038.

On the Manhattan side, take the J or Z train to Chambers Street, or the 2 or 3 train to Fulton Street.

On the Brooklyn Side, take the A or C train to High Street.

If you don’t want to walk the bridge, you can rent a bike and bike across the bridge instead!

Empire State Building Lookout

The Empire State building is one of the best places to see the New York City skyline. But if you visit on an October night, not only are you avoiding major crowds, but you also get to see the city at night in all its sparkling glory, which is pretty dang cool.

When to go:  The Empire State Building is open until midnight and you’ll want at least an hour for your visit. So make sure you visit no later than 11 pm.

Location and how to get there: 20 W 34th St., New York, NY 10001.

Take the 1, 2, or 3 train to 34th St – Penn Station. Or take the 4 or 6 to 33rd Street Station. Then walk to the Empire State Building from the station.

Free Things to Do in New York City in October

Hey, I get it. Traveling is expensive. That’s why I wanted to include these October-exclusive New York City experiences that you can do totally for free!

Picnic at a park under the changing leaves

Possibly the best thing about fall is when the leaves start to change color. In New York City, that happens in October. So, if you’re in the Big Apple in the fall, make sure you take advantage of the weather and enjoy a picnic in one of the many parks where you can fully enjoy the changing of the seasons. Some of my favorite picnicking parks include Astoria Park, Fort Tryon Park, and Prospect Park.

When to go:  Mid-October when the leaves are at their peak in color-changing brightness.

Cost:  Free! Or, at least as much as you choose to spend on your picnic.

Join a Juggling Class at Bryant Park

Bryant Park offers a bunch of free activities throughout the year, but every October they offer free juggling classes. Learn a new skill and pick up juggling at Bryant Park!

When to go:  Use this calendar to pick a juggling class day that works for you.

Location and how to get there: Located between 5th and 6th Ave and 40th and 42nd Street in New York City, New York, 10018.

Join a Birding Tour at Bryant Park

Another fun, unique, and most importantly, free thing to do at Bryant Park in October is to join a birding tour. Did you know that many species of birds migrate to New York in the fall? Join this free activity to learn how to spot them!

Take the A, C, or E to 42nd Street Port Authority Bus Terminal. Or the S or 7 train to 42nd Street Times Square. Walk to the park from the station.

Kayaking at Pier 26

Though kayaking is typically considered more of a summer thing, you can still kayak at Pier 26 until October 10— and you can do it for free!

When to go:  Weekends until October 10.

Location and how to get there: Pier 26 is located on the southern end of Hudson River Park on the Westside Highway just north of N Moore St. 

Take the 1 train to Franklin Street, or the A, C, or E train to Canal Street.

October is a major time for events in New York City. It’s the perfect time of year because summer is over and amazing weather is overtaking the city. Here are some of the best events in New York City in October that you do not want to miss out on.

For the entire month of October, New York City’s architectural community hosts more than 100 tours, educational lectures, and films focusing on the design of one of the most famous cities in the world. For this month only, you can get behind-the-scenes peeks at the buildings that frame New York City’s famous skyline.

Off-Broadway Week

When to go:  Off-Broadway Week is happening in the first week of October.

The New Yorker Festival is a place where all the greatest New York minds get together. Enjoy a mix of live conversations, performances, and screenings from experts in politics, the arts, journalism, and entertainment.

Open House New York

New York architecture is known for two things— skyscrapers and charming brownstones. During Open House New York in October, you can gain access to both. These places are normally closed off to the public.

New York Film Festival

See New York City’s film community’s most epic films at New York Film Festival before they make it big. In the past, famous filmmakers like Jean-Luc Godard, Pedro Almodóvar, and Martin Scorsese have premiered their films at this festival, held in New York City every October.

NewFest LGBTQ+ Film Festival

Like the New York Film Festival, the NewFest LGBTQ+ Film Festival is a prestigious film festival hosting the best films from New York, only here they are ensuring that LGBTQ+ stories are seen, heard, and celebrated.

When to go:  October 13 — 25.

Cost: Tickets start at $18 per person. Festival passes start at $250 per person.

Show up hungry and buy from local vendors at the NYC Autumn Bazaar. More than 180 merchants will be participating in this year’s NYC Autumn Bazaar, showcasing fashion booths, home decor, vintage, and delicious food.

A new season, a new time for sports. I’m not much of a sports enthusiast myself, but even I can’t deny that there are some pretty sweet sporting events happening in New York City starting in October.

Brooklyn Nets

This newbie team is only ten years old, but they’re on the rise to the top and they’re a local favorite.

The New York Knicks aren’t just a sports team based in New York. They’re a part of New York History. Join rabid Knicks fans at Madison Square Garden for an enthusiastic game of basketball. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a celebrity sitting courtside!

Ice Hockey

If you’ve ever been to a hockey game, you know how intense it can be. Come cheer on the Blueshirts (what fans affectionately call the New York Rangers) when they play at Madison Square Garden.

Rivals to the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders are also local to New York City. Try to buy tickets for a night when the two teams play against each to see the stands filled with local fans in an absolute uproar.

Founded in 1959 at the Titans of New York, the team, now renamed the New York Jets, has become a staple in American football. They have arguably one of the most intense fan bases in the entire league, so you know their home games are going to be enthusiastic.

New York Giants 

One of the most popular teams in the NFL, the New York Giants share a home stadium with the New York Jets. Though the Jets aren’t as big of rivals to the Giants as, say, The Eagles, the Jets-Giants rivalry is not one to be taken lightly. Though they rarely play against each other during the regular season, if you happen to catch a game where both teams are playing, it is sure to be a great time.

What to do in New York City in October if it Rains

October is one of the dryer months in New York City. But if you’re visiting a town on the upper East Coast which means there’s still a good chance of precipitation on at least one of the days on your trip. So, in case that happens, here are a few ways you can stay dry and still enjoy your time in New York City in October.

See a Broadway show

If you happen to be visiting New York during Broadway or Off-Broadway Week, then you can get two-for-one tickets. But, no matter what time you come to New York, or how many times you’ve been to New York, seeing a Broadway show is always a great plan, especially if it’s raining outside.

Go to a bar with live music

If it’s raining outside, then bring the party inside! Don’t let the rain stop you from hitting the nightlife. Instead, find a place where you can hang out for the evening, and bonus if they’ve got live music. 

Saint Tuesdays in lower Manhattan, Haswell Greens in Midtown, and the Anyway Cafe in the East Village all have great vibes and play music every night.

Enjoy the view from a rooftop bar

If you’re looking for a little more elegance, go to a rooftop bar and enjoy the view of the city when it rains. From the roof of a building, you’ll be able to see the shimmering skyline glittering in the rain.

The Panorama Room on the 18th floor of Roosevelt Island’s Graduate Hotel offers stunning views of the city through double-story windows that will block out the rain so you don’t get wet!

Visit a museum

Like seeing a Broadway show, a museum visit should be on every New York tourist’s itinerary, no matter how many times you’ve been to the city. Plus, a museum visit is a great experience to have when it rains because most of them are indoors!

If you’ve already been to the MET, the Cloisters, and the Natural History Museum, try out some of the lesser known and more unique museums like Mmuseumm , the New York Transit Museum , and the Museum of Sex .

Munch away at a food hall

If it’s raining too hard and you don’t want to explore the outdoors, but you still want to have a great New York experience, try exploring a food hall. You’ll come hungry and leave with a full belly and fond memories. 

Try the Canal Steet Market near Chinatown, Citizens NY near Hudson Yards, or Essex Market on the Lower East Side.

If you’re visiting New York City for the first time, I highly recommend staying in Midtown Manhattan as that is where most of the experiences are. This will also put you near lots of subway stations so you can easily get to other boroughs and experiences for your New York in October adventure.

Getting around New York City in October

The best way to get around New York City in October is by subway, as the city’s intricate underground train system can take you just about anywhere in the city. 

It’s super easy to use the subway if you have a credit or debit card with tapping ability as you just need to tap your card on the turnstyle and it will let you through. Each train ride is $2.75 and includes transfers as long as you don’t exit the station.

You can also take an Uber or a taxi. Or, stay in one of these hotels with free bicycle rentals:

The Jane Hotel in Greenwich Village.

The Maritime Hotel in Chelsea.

Arlo Midtown in Hell’s Kitchen.

If you are planning to do a day trip out of the city and need to rent a car, you can get a great deal through Expedia .

What to Pack for Your Trip to New York City in October 2024

The weather in New York City in October is beautiful and hovers around 65°F. So, you’ll want to pack some light sweaters or a jacket, but there’s no need for winter coats or bulky sweaters.

In general, I think it’s best to pack outfits that can be layered so you can add on when you get cold and shed layers when you get hot. Typically, I like to bring a flannel like this one so I can tug it on when it’s chilly, but otherwise keep it tied around my waist and out of my way.

Essential Packing Items for New York City in October

In addition to packing a few super cute outfits for photogenic pictures against the red and yellow leaves, I highly recommend these additional items for your trip to New York City in October. These items are, in my opinion, essential for any trip, but especially for a trip to a big city, like New York.

Rolling suitcase

If you’ve ever traveled to a big city before then you know how much easier it is if you have a suitcase with multidirectional spinning wheels. It’s easier to navigate on busy streets, especially if you have to take a train or walk to your accommodations. An anti-theft bag or purse

This is an essential item, especially if you plan to go somewhere crowded like Timesquare. Thieves often try to slash bags by the straps and then make off with the entire bag. There are 3 soccer matches on the programme in October: a match for the New York Red Bulls on 19 October at the Red Bull Arena and two matches for New York City FC on 2 and 5 October at Yankee Stadium.

NBA pre-season games

October marks the return to the courts of the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets, the two New York teams with a smooth run in the NBA championship. 1. Experience the Total Solar Eclipse (Multiple Regions)

A total solar eclipse is truly a once in a lifetime experience and New York State will be at the center of it all for this rare cosmic event on April 8, 2024. Commencing shortly after 2 p.m., this celestial spectacle will unfold within a 124-mile-wide path stretching from Chautauqua-Allegheny to Greater Niagara , Finger Lakes , Thousand Islands-Seaway and the Adirondacks . With incredible viewing spots from historic Olympic sites to beautiful state parks, and thrilling festivals and events including Roc the Eclipse and a celebration in Niagara Falls that’s so big even NASA will be there, there’s no better place to witness totality than New York.

2. Celebrate 100 Years of NYS Parks (Multiple Regions)

There’s never been a better time to get outside and appreciate New York’s natural beauty than 2024 — which will mark 100 years since the establishment of the beloved state parks system. From the serene shores of Long Island to the mighty Niagara Falls, New York's parks and historic sites offer exciting adventures from ziplining at Jones Beach to hot air ballooning over Letchworth’s waterfalls to drinking from Saratoga’s mineral springs to exploring dramatic landscapes of the Chimney Bluffs . 3. Celebrate Pride in New York (NYC)

The birthplace of the modern LGBTQ rights movement and home to one of the largest LGBTQ populations in the country, there’s no better place to celebrate Pride than in New York State. What started as a friendly competition to settle the score on who had the best Spiedie recipe (small pieces of marinated meat that can be skewered and then grilled) has transformed into a beloved Binghamton tradition that draws over 100,000 attendees each year. 6. Experience the Beauty of “The Queen of American Lakes” (Adirondacks)

Lake George is known as the birthplace of the American vacation. In the mid-1800s when a Boston preacher penned a book about his adventures in the Adirondacks wilderness, city dwellers flocked to the woods to experience the joys of hiking, camping, and fishing. A vacation paradise ever since, Lake George attracts visitors to its glistening waters and 109 miles of coastline year-round, but especially in summer. The possibilities for fun are endless. Buffalo’s grooviest Thanksgiving weekend tradition, being held November 30, features the largest dance floor in New York State with 500,000 watts of sound and lights. Tickets typically go on sale in early August, so be sure to buy yours as soon as possible as this event sells out every year (all 7,000 tickets were scooped up in 15 minutes in 2023!). The event raises money for Camp Good Days and Special Times, an organization that offers services and residential programs to families and individuals affected by cancer.

9. Attend a Day at the Races (Capital-Saratoga)

Saratoga's motto is "health, history, and horses,” and it's no wonder why. Famous for its mineral baths, artisan stores, and historic sites, Saratoga also has horse racing sewn into the town's DNA. Since 1863, The Saratoga Race Course (pictured) has been welcoming thousands of locals and tourists from all across the globe to its historic grandstand, especially in the summer months. Witness history in 2024 as the world famous Belmont Stakes comes to Saratoga for the first time ever, with the third leg of the Triple Crown being held on June 8. If you're in town in August, be sure to see the prestigious Travers Stakes (also called the Midsummer Derby), the most popular racing event of the year. Everything to Know About the 2024 US Open

A guide to what's happening at Arthur Ashe stadium starting on Monday.

On Monday, one of the world’s marquee sporting events is back. The 2024 US Open Tennis Championships returns to Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York as the year’s fourth and final Grand Slam.  About 700,000 fans are expected to descend upon Queens for the event.  As usual, not only can you expect riveting tennis action from the tour’s elite players, but Flushing Meadows also turns into the city’s top destination for all things entertainment, food, and drink.  Whether a local or a visitor, here’s a look at what you can expect for 2024.

The Schedule

The US Open’s ticketed main draw runs from Aug. 26 to Sept. 8 (including Labor Day weekend), but the action gets going a week prior with Fan Week .  From Aug. 19-25, Fan Week attendees can get complimentary access to the tennis center grounds to watch qualifying matches, practice sessions, and more. For instance, on Aug. 21, expect a tennis exhibition featuring a lineup of all-star players and US Open legends.   With a full array of entertainment, food, and drink available, it’s a preview of what’s to come for week two. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) typically releases the schedule of play a few days before the start of the tournament. 

Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping

Tennis might be the main attraction, but it’s certainly not the only appeal of the US Open. For 14 days, expect New York’s electric energy and top-notch eats on display in Flushing Meadows.   The Honey Deuce, a crowd-favorite signature cocktail made from Grey Goose vodka, lemonade, raspberry liquor, and melon balls, is back once again. Also making a return is fare from some recognizable names: Chef Ed Brown, Chef Masaharu Morimoto, Chef Kwame Onwuachi, Chef David Burke, and Chef Alex Guarnaschelli.   Coqodaq — the buzzy eatery from restauranteur Simon Kim — will make its US Open debut. Fans can also enjoy signature dishes from the Korean-inspired Better Fried Chicken restaurant, including a unique chicken nugget and caviar pairing, located on the club level of Arthur Ashe Stadium. Expect eats from popular eateries in and around New York represented at the Open: Benjamin’s Steakhouse, Dos Toros Taqueria, Red Hook Lobster Pound, Fuku, Eataly, Crown Shy, Korilla BBQ and Poke Yachty, Hill Country BBQ, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, and many more.  On Aug. 22, the Open’s signature culinary event, Flavors of the Open , guests will dine on a sampling of premium items while enjoying live music and top-tier tennis action.  As in past years, both American Express and Chase cardholders (and even non-cardholders) receive select on-site perks.  The US Open American Express Fan Experience, a 20,000-square-foot interactive space for all guests will return. Also back for cardholders is an Amex Card Member Lounge and exclusive Centurion Lounge (for Amex Platinum cardholders only). Reservations are required for the Centurion Lounge and will drop on Resy daily at 10:00 a.m. EST.  For Chase cardholders, there will be an indoor lounge ( reservations required except for Fan Week); a first-come, first-served outdoor Chase Terrace including tennis views, shade, complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic beverages; and complimentary mobile chargers throughout the tournament grounds.  Expect US Open merchandise designed by Ralph Lauren, Fila and Wilson gear, and much more for sale. Finally, from Aug. 26 to Sept. 8, anyone who books a reservation at the following NYC hotspots through Dorsia will get a free Ace Paloma at the Open, a cocktail made with Maestro Dobe tequila, grapefruit soda, and fresh lime:

Getting There

While within New York City’s borders, Flushing Meadows is about 11 miles from the heart of Manhattan and located in far eastern Queens. Driving is typically not recommended as traffic, especially near the entrance of the tennis center, can be heavy (especially since the New York Mets baseball team frequently has games at nearby CitiField during the tennis tournament).  The best way to get to the tennis action is by taking public transportation. Attendees can either take the 7 subway line to the Mets-Willets Point station or hop on the Long Island Railroad, providing more direct service from Penn Station, Grand Central, Woodside, and all stations on the Port Washington line.  If you must take a car, an Uber and Lyft pickup, and drop off zone is located at the far end of the grounds, by the South Gate.  For a more luxurious experience, consider a dayboat or a helicopter. For instance, Aman New York has an overnight package for out-of-towners (or staycationers) complete with courtside seats and a boat to the venue in partnership with Barton & Gray Mariners Club. Meanwhile, Equinox Hotel is working with Blade to offer high-rolling travelers helicopter access to the Open.

Trekking 85 Miles With Grandpa, Scuba Diving With Grandma

With older adults staying fit longer, many are joining their grandchildren on travel adventures like wilderness hikes, bike tours and even bungee jumping.

Rick Rhoads, 80, was “training like crazy” last spring, walking six miles a day — “all hills” — to get ready for his summer vacation. Mr. Rhoads, of Orcas Island, Wash., and Lucy Erent, his 15-year-old granddaughter, who lives in Prague, were planning to trek 85 miles in eight days along Scotland’s West Highland Way .

The route, which passes through farmland and forest and runs along Loch Lomond into the Scottish Highlands , traverses a range of terrains, including steep inclines and rocky trails. A trip organizer was set to manage lodging and transport the luggage each day.

Mr. Rhoads wasn’t daunted by the distance, or by the age difference. He said he was looking forward to continuing discussions the pair has had on video calls, on topics as varied as stage drama, cosplay, pandemics and family dynamics. “I’ll get her to do the talking when we’re going up hills,” he joked.

When they finally did the trek, in early July, there were a few wrinkles: The hiking was tougher than expected, and one of Mr. Rhoads’s boots began to fall apart near the end — nothing some duct tape couldn’t fix. Overall, Mr. Rhoads said, the adventure was challenging, but he was eager to do another, perhaps a route “that passed by cafes.”

Sixty may or may not be the new 40, but it’s clear that many older adults are enjoying longer “ healthspans ” — the time they are active, fit and healthy. This shift is adding a new dimension to traditional grandparent-grandchild vacations: adventure. Think bike trips instead of cruise ships, wilderness treks instead of bus tours.

According to the World Health Organization , healthy life expectancy, defined as “the average number of years a person can expect to live in full health” without disabling illnesses or injuries, rose globally to 63.7 in 2019 from 58.3 in 2000. In the United States, 40 percent of people 65 and older interviewed last year in an Outdoor Foundation study said they engaged in outdoor activities like hiking or biking. Older adults are also now more likely to be able to afford vacations: Americans 55 and over control nearly 70 percent of U.S. household wealth, compared with about 50 percent in 1989 .

Travel companies are taking notice. Craft Travel , a luxury trip planner that handles about 150 itineraries per year, has seen a big increase in grandparent-grandchild travel over the past five years, said Julia Carter, its founder, adding that “the trend has definitely been toward more adventurous, or bucket-list-type, experiences” — African safaris, hikes in Patagonia and trips to Antarctica.

Tour companies and activity providers, which generally don’t impose age caps on their offerings (though some do have minimum age requirements), are making accommodations for the new demographic. Some examples:

The Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort in Savusavu, Fiji, which offers snorkel and scuba outings, has had grandchildren with grandparents as old as 84 learn to scuba dive together. For guests older than 70, along with the standard safety training, the resort provides a doctor to certify the diver’s health.

Road Scholar , a travel company that was founded to serve older adults and now has an online catalog dedicated to grandparent-grandchild travel, details the physical expectations of its trips so participants can decide if they can handle them. The description of its white-water rafting trip on the Lower Salmon River in Idaho, for example, tells travelers they’ll be “carrying bags in camp across uneven terrain. Temperatures often in the 90+ degree range.”

Backroads , which offers multigenerational biking, hiking, snorkeling and kayaking trips, sends training advice in advance of departure. Like many other bicycle trip organizers, Backroads makes e-bikes available, with a typical minimum age set in the midteens. Some grandparents use the e-bikes to keep up with their grandchildren, but depending on everyone’s fitness level, it may be the younger generation using them, said Liz Einbinder, a Backroads spokeswoman.

Some older adults are embarking on more extreme adventures. Nick Steers, the executive director of Great Canadian Bungee , which hosts more than 10,000 guests per year in Chelsea, Quebec, for bungee jumping, zip lining and rafting, said nearly 5 percent of its participants were 60 or older, including some grandparents there with their families. Ron Jones, the founder of Bungee America , outside Los Angeles, said that in July, a 15-year-old had jumped with his grandparents.

Active grandparents have some tips for others considering an adventure vacation with their grandchildren.

“Preparation for any trip is key,” said Joe Bassett, 60, who runs the guided wilderness adventure company Valiant Outfitters . He takes his grandchildren, the oldest of whom is 7, on hikes and overnight stays. For a camp-out he said, grandparents might walk the trail in advance to make sure they know its contours. “An ideal route would be a loop that is never more than a couple miles from the parking lot,” he said. Mr. Bassett advises no-cook meals. “Keep it simple with familiar foods,” he said.

Harriet Vogel, 84, of Palm City, Fla., also has some advice: Choose activities you both enjoy and then “have hopes rather than expectations, and just let the trip happen,” she said. When she was 79, Ms. Vogel celebrated her grandson Matthew’s college graduation by snorkeling, paddle boarding and biking with him in the Caribbean nation of St. Kitts and Nevis, all mutual interests. Last year it was her granddaughter Jessie’s turn, and the two went on a walking and hiking trip in Switzerland, organized by Backroads. Ms. Vogel is currently planning a fall trip with another grandchild. The time together “increases our closeness,” she said.

While many grandparents may be ready to go on adventures with their grandchildren, not all of them are eager to deal with technology to do so.

When Fin Expeditions, in Cocoa Beach, Fla., noticed an increase in multigenerational groups going out on its kayaking tours, management made sure to offer reservations over the phone for those who don’t like dealing with websites.

But that kind of help wasn’t necessary for Fran Doran, 79, of Butte, Mont., who took her granddaughter scuba diving in Thailand this summer as a graduation gift. “I organized it and made all the reservations online,” Ms. Doran said. The pair also rode in a bamboo boat and waded with elephants in a river. “It’s fun to research,” she said.

4 Day Itinerary NYC  Day 1 : Theatre District & Midtown

New York City’s Theatre District is the neighborhood where most Broadway theatres are found in Midtown West. West 54th Street bounds this area to the north, West 40th Street to the south, Eighth Ave to the west, and Sixth Avenue to the east.

Here you’ll find many theaters, hotels, restaurants, and other entertainment venues, as well as Times Square. There’s really no better part of the city to begin your 4- day trip , so let’s take a look a look at what to do in NYC’s Theatre District and Midtown on your first day:

Times Square

As we mentioned, this is the New York City neighborhood where Times Square is located. And even if you’ve never been to NYC, you should already know this is a bustling place. The best part is that there are plenty of things to see and do regardless of whether you go to Times Square during the day or night.  

If you’re looking for activities to do in Times Square, check out Madame Tussauds and National Geographic’s Ocean Odyssey. Or you can simply people-watch or meet someone dressed up as your favorite character – just don’t forget that if you take photos of these characters or interact with them, they’ll expect to be paid.  

When it comes time to eat in Times Square, try the best tacos in America at Los Tacos No. 1. , a slice of authentic NY pizza at Patzeria’s, or choose from hundreds of options at the 24-hour Times Square Diner. If you want something more upscale, head on over to Aureole , Carmine’s, or the Hunt & Fish Club .  

BIG BUS: Get a quick overview of Manhattan

NYC is home to many hop-on, hop-off bus tours offered by Big Bus. So, once it’s time to leave Times Square and move on, get on one of these buses and ride to the next location. Thanks to onboard commentary, this is a great way to see and get to know the area. Not to mention, it’s a nice reprieve if you’re not used to walking so many miles per day.  

Bryant Park

For the next stop on day 1, we have Bryant Park. It’s a charming little gem found right behind the New York Public Library. Bryant Park makes you think you’ve left NYC and entered Paris, and it makes a wonderful place to read a book, enjoy a picnic, or just rest your feet for a few minutes.  

Grand Central Terminal

Grand Central Terminal is just as beautiful and busy as you would expect. Sure, you’ve probably seen it featured in countless shows and movies over the years, but seeing it is believing, as the television does not capture the stunning beauty of the building’s turquoise ceiling or the sheer number of people who travel through here daily.  

Anytime you’re near Grand Central, be sure to stop at Sarge’s Delicatessen & Diner for an authentic, inexpensive breakfast or brunch. If you’re in a hurry, grab a quick bite at Bagel Express; their food is simple, tasty, and affordable.  

One Vanderbilt The Summit

Summit One Vanderbilt is NYC’s newest attraction that recently opened in October 2021. The building altered the look of the city’s skyline, which provides guests with a whole new experience.  

Summit One features a deck, mirrored rooms, and the world’s tallest rack-and-pinion elevator system that features cars that are 90 square feet each, which makes them the world’s largest glass floor elevators!

There are several different packages to choose from, and the one you choose decides how much of the experience you get to enjoy. For example, the Summit Experience allows you access to all 4 floors, and you can step into glass skyboxes that sit 1,000 feet over Midtown below.  

Alternatively, you can choose the Summit Ascent package, which includes access to the entire experience and the glass elevators at their highest point. This is a must-see attraction for anyone looking for the best views of NYC and should definitely be a part of your first day.  

This is perhaps the most famous and expensive street in all of New York City – 5th Avenue or as it’s commonly called “Millionaire’s Row.” This road stretches the entire length of Manhattan both north and south.  

Regardless of whether you buy anything or not, 5th Avenue should be on your itinerary. There’s something about marveling at the most expensive retail space in the world, and it almost makes you feel as if you’re on Ginza in Tokyo or Champs-Elysees in Paris.  

The best shopping areas are found closest to Central Park, where you’ll find stores such as Cartier and Armani. You’ll also find the famous NYC Apple store, where they offer laptops and free internet access.  

Another great thing about exploring 5th Avenue is that you’ll find the Empire State Building, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and many museums.  

Empire State Building

Speaking of the Empire State Building, this is the next stop on your first-ever trip to NYC. Completed in 1931 as the world’s tallest building, this 102-story skyscraper symbolizes the resilience and hope of NYC and its people. Today, the building is used primarily for office space, but it is also home to two observation decks and many unique exhibits.  

You have a few options for how you can enjoy this iconic building. First, you can travel to the main observation deck at the 86th Floor Observatory. This is the city’s most famed open-air observatory, where you’ll enjoy 360-degree views of the city.  

For those who want to see even better breathtaking views, check out the 102nd Floor Observatory, where you’ll find floor-to-ceiling views that can extend up to 80 miles on clear days. Regardless of whether you go inside, it’s still a legendary building to see in person.

4 Day Itinerary NYC  Day 2 : Hudson Yards, Chelsea, Meatpacking District

On day 2 of this 4 Day Itinerary NYC, you’ll explore the Meatpacking District, Chelsea, and Hudson Yards, which are all located in Midtown Manhattan . At one time, this was Manhattan’s hub of industry, but in recent times it has become one of the most cultivated cultural neighborhoods in NYC.  

Chelsea is on downtown Manhattan’s west side and is an expensive area with many things to do, such as historical sights, off-Broadway theatre, dining, and more. This area also encompasses the ultra-chic Meatpacking District , where you’ll find posh nightlife, fine dining, and luxury shopping.  

Chelsea is adored by art fans and is well-known for its concentration of galleries. Tourists love these neighborhoods because it’s very walkable and still an up-and-coming section of New York City. Now, let’s take a look at what your second day in NYC has in store for you!

Circle Line - Best of NYC Cruise

The best way to start your second day in New York City is by hopping aboard the Best of NYC Cruise offered by Circle Line. This is the only sightseeing cruise that goes completely around Manhattan, which means you get to see all of NYC’s most iconic landmarks from the comfort of a boat in under three hours!

Landmarks you can expect to see along this cruise are the Statue of Liberty, High Line, Ellis Island, Chrysler Building, Empire State Building, Gracie Mansion, Yankee Stadium, and much more. And the best part is that award-winning tour guides narrate each Best of NYC Cruises, so you’ll learn every significant detail during the trip.  

Explore Hudson Yards

Hudson Yards is one of the most exciting places to visit in New York City, especially if you only have 4 days on the itinerary. It’s home to two of the most photographable places in NYC, so you’ll want to buy tickets for both the Vessel and Edge .  

The Vessel is a honeycomb-shaped building that features 154 floors and sits in the center of Hudson Yards. Climb to the top and take in the views of the Hudson River, or take advantage of all the photo opportunities on the ground. You should know that if you plan to climb this structure, you have to buy tickets, and it’s definitely worth buying them online. Also, they only allow groups of two up at a time (one additional information: right now the Vessel is closed).

Bonus Tip: If you visit NYC around the holidays, Hudson Yards puts on a fantastic light display that you shouldn’t miss!

The Edge Observation Deck

As you’re walking north in Hudson Yards, you’ll notice an eye-catching building that’s made of glass and has a triangular-shaped platform coming from the top. If you take our advice and buy tickets to this attraction, you’ll be standing on that triangle very soon.  

As you walk inside of Hudson Yards’ central shopping mall, it may remind you of Singapore or Dubai with the upmarket feel and pristine finish. Keep moving to the fourth floor, as this is where you’ll find the entrance for Edge. Outside of the attraction, many neat exhibits teach visitors about renewable energy and how waste and air filtration work inside the building.  

The elevator ride that carries you from the fourth floor to the 100th is really exhilarating and a favorite of many people, as it’s like no other experience. Upon reaching the top of Edge, you are met with breathtaking views that are even better during sunset.  

After you finish here, be sure to walk up to 34th Street, past Penn Station, and see the famous NYC Macy’s store! At this point of day two, you may be ready for a meal. If so, check out places such as the Backyard Cafe at Hudson Yards, Wild Ink, Whitmans, The Tavern, or one of many eateries at the Chelsea Market.  

After you’ve had a bite to eat, head on over to the High Line, this is a fan favorite and offers some of the most beautiful views of the local area. Essentially, the High Line is an abandoned railroad track that’s been turned into an urban walkway and park. There are few other places in the world where you can experience such a mixed and improbable use of space – who builds a garden in the sky?

The High Line is an excellent place to take a stroll and see nature. The entire hike is about a mile and a half, but you don’t have to walk the entire way; just be sure to spend time enjoying the art and views.  

Meatpacking District

NYC’s Meatpacking District is a trendy commercial area located on the far west side between the West Village and Chelsea . In this section of NYC, you’ll find luxury designer clothing stores, a portion of the High Line, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and more!  

The cobblestone streets are lined with hip clubs and restaurants that have recently taken over the enormous spaces that once used to be home to none other than meat packaging facilities. So, take advantage of places such as Plunge Rooftop Bar and Lounge , Brass Monkey NYC , and the Famous Sky Bridge .  

Pier 54 - Little Island

Little Island is one of NYC’s newest attractions and is very special, as it’s a park built in the Hudson River atop 132 gorgeous tulip-shaped concrete stilts. It’s located at Pier 54 in Hudson River Park and is easily accessible via the High Line.  

This is a great stop for your second day in New York City because it’s designed with walking paths, gentle trees, and over 35 different species of trees, so it’s a true oasis in the middle of a concrete jungle. The highlight of Little Island Park is the amphitheater built next to the water, and there are also art exhibits and event spaces.  

Visit a Broadway Shows

As your second day comes to an end, grab some dinner at Dos Caminos , Catch NYC, RH Rooftop Restaurant, or Serafina Meatpacking and then make your way to take in a Broadway show. Even if this isn’t usually your scene, you are in New York City and the home of Broadway, so don’t miss out.  

It is worth mentioning that Broadway Shows can be expensive, but the experience is unforgettable. So, plan for this and try to book tickets in advance as they may be cheaper. Some popular shows right now include Hamilton , Wicked , Lion King , and more.

4 Day Itinerary NYC  Day 3 : Financial District, DUMBO in Brooklyn

Welcome to your third day in NYC! Today you’ll experience New York City’s Financial District and DUMBO/Brooklyn. The city’s bustling financial heart is home to many glittering skyscrapers and Wall Street. During the workweek and evenings, the sidewalks are busy with young professionals working and filling the bars and restaurants of Stone Street and South Street Seaport.  

Once you get into DUMBO/Brooklyn, you’ll be surrounded by warehouses that have been converted into high-end restaurants, independent boutiques, and trendy cafes. On the north end, you’ll find Jane’s Carousel and on the waterfront is a former tobacco factory converted into a gallery and performance scene.  

Days 1 and 2 were busy, but day 3 has even more in store for you; be sure to drink lots of coffee in the morning and get started early! It’s probably best to grab a quick bite to eat, such as a bagel or donuts. So, let’s look at day 3 of our 4 Day Itinerary NYC:  

Battery Park

Many people know this park at the southernmost tip of Manhattan as a landing and/or departure point of the Staten Island Ferry (a free crossing enables a sensational view to the skyline). Battery Park is one of the oldest public parks in New York and is of historical importance for New York: the first Dutch settlers are said to have arrived here when they founded New Amsterdam.

Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island (Ferry & Stop)

No trip to NYC is complete without stopping at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and this is especially true if it’s your first time visiting the city. However, as you would imagine, this is a top-rated destination, so it can take a good chunk of your day if you don’t plan properly. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you take the first ferry over to the island in the morning. Not only will this shorten the time it takes to visit Lady Liberty, but you’ll be on Liberty Island with just one group of people. Also, keep in mind that buying a ticket to the attraction is the only way you’re allowed to set foot on Liberty Island.  

After you’ve seen everything there is to see on Liberty Island, hop back on the ferry. It stops on Ellis Island before making its way back to Manhattan. To get the most from this experience, be sure to get off the ferry and check out the National Museum of Immigration on Ellis Island. Yet, only do this if you are a quick explorer or very interested because there is a lot of ground to cover today!

One World Observatory

NYC has a million things to experience, but there’s only one way to see all of them at once. Your journey begins as you hop aboard a SkyPod in One World Trade Center, which travels 102 floors in just 47 seconds until you are transported to the top of the Western Hemisphere’s tallest building.  

After arriving 102 stories high, you find yourself face-to-face with one of the world’s most iconic skylines. Even if you’ve seen the city millions of times, you’ve never seen it quite like this! The Observatory consists of three massive levels where you’ll discover lots of surprises along the way.  

If you are hungry, be sure to stop by the cafe for a delicious bite to eat. Then step onto the Sky Portal and wander high above the crowds below. Finally, go on an interactive tour of NYC with the assistance of a Skyline Concierge who can answer questions and inform you about the city’s long and storied history. Before you leave, don’t forget to stop by One Mix Bar for a glass of Prosecco and one last look at the Earth’s bend before setting off to your next attraction.  

9/11 Memorial and Museum

Though most of our 4 Day Itinerary NYC focuses on the fun and lively side of the city, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum remind us that some of the city’s most crucial parts of history are very dark.  

The Twin Towers used to stand in NYC’s Financial District on Manhattan’s southern tip, but today you’ll find the 9/11 Memorial in their place. The memorial is evocative and free to see, but if you feel up to it (as this is a very powerful and emotional experience), you should consider visiting the museum as well. Yet, regardless of whether you go into the museum or not, the 9/11 Memorial should be part of your 4 day NYC trip.  

Wall Street

Wall Street covers eight city blocks in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan. It runs between the East River in the east to Broadway in the west over to South Street and is the second most famous street besides Broadway.  

Exploring this area can be tricky, but it is a lot of fun. Begin by finding the New York Stock Exchange at the corner of Broadway and Wall Street. Though you can no longer go inside, seeing the building is something special itself. Also, be sure to take advantage of the photo op with the famed charging bull statue!  

Other activities to partake in this area include Battery Park, Trinity Church, Federal Hall, and Stone Street. If you’re hungry when on Wall Street, try out places such as Neapolitan Express, SkyCafe, or one of the many food trucks you’ll find in the area.  

South Street Seaport

As you move south along Wall Street, keep an eye out for South Street Seaport. This section of the neighborhood is located right on the edge of the Financial District and is a lively part of town that’s spent the last several years rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy.  

When you visit the seaport, you can enjoy live music, learn the local history, or grab some food at the Fulton farmer’s market. This area is only a short, 15-minute walk from the stock exchange and makes for the best excuse to rest your feet near the water.  

Brooklyn Bridge

After you’ve seen everything in the Financial District, it’s time to head over the famed Brooklyn Bridge. Of course, you can take a taxi or rideshare across the bridge to make the trip shorter, but if you feel up to it, you can also walk across. The bridge is just over one mile long, and you can even take a guided tour!

DUMBO & Brooklyn Heights

After crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, you’ll find that Brooklyn is home to some of NYC’s most exciting neighborhoods and sites. One that’s gained a lot of attention and adoration is DUMBO, which could also be partly due to its catchy name.  

This waterfront neighborhood has a fascinating and rich history and many activities for visitors to enjoy. Not only is DUMBO a premier art district, but there are also lots of great places to eat, such as Grimaldi’s Pizza , The River Cafe, Jacques Torres chocolate factory, Butler Bakery , and more. Circle Line - Harbor Lights Night Cruise

Finish out your third day in New York City with the Harbor Lights Cruise. Hop aboard one of Circle Line’s state-of-the-art boats and take in the views of NYC twinkling at night. This unforgettable experience lasts about two hours, and you’ll see landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge, and more.  

Just make sure your camera is ready because you’ll be mere yards away from some of the best photos of your life. And don’t worry; you won’t miss a thing because there will be an award-winning tour guide narrating the City’s story. So, sit back, relax, and take some amazing photos while creating memories that will last forever.  

4 Day Itinerary NYC  Day 4 : Upper West Side, Midtown, SoHo, Little Italy

Finally, for day 4 of our 4 Day Itinerary NYC, you’ll spend the last day of your trip touring the Upper West Side , Midtown, SoHo, and Little Italy. And just when you thought your vacation wouldn’t get any better, we’re rounding the trip off with some laid-back activities that will help you wind down from the past several exciting days.  

Let’s see what these areas of NYC have in store for you on day number four:  

Central Park

You probably thought we forgot about Central Park, but you know the saying – saving the best for last! Central Park is a masterpiece that Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux created. Though the park has gone through extensive restorations over time, the initial purpose of acting as an open-air oasis amid a large, metropolitan city has always stayed the same.  

This national landmark is a must-visit attraction regardless of what season you visit or why you’re visiting. This park has something for folks of all ages, from horse and carriage rides and bike rentals to the Central Park Zoo and activities such as ice skating and Strawberry Fields.  

American Museum of Natural History

After finishing up at Central Park, you may want to stop at one of the many local restaurants such as the Loeb Boathouse, Tavern On The Green, or Maoz Vegetarian and make your way to the American Museum of Natural History.  

This museum is the world’s largest natural history museum, as it spans 4 city blocks and encompasses 25 interconnected buildings. Even if you’re not a fan of museums, this one is a must! It’s home to over 34 million specimens of animals, plants, fossils, human remains, rocks, minerals, meteorites, and human cultural artifacts. Though keep in mind that only a fraction of the museum’s artifacts are on show at any given time.  

Visit the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) ...

The next stop on our list is the MoMA, or Museum of Modern Art. This art museum is located in Midtown Manhattan on 53rd between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. MoMA plays a significant role in the development and collection of modern art. It’s often referred to as the world’s largest and most influential museum for modern art. And there’s no wonder considering that the MoMA features five floors of art. So, take as much time as you’d like to explore the exhibits and collections before moving on.  

... or the Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met), or both!

We hope you’re not tired of seeing beautiful art because your next stop is the Met. New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art is the United States’ largest art museum that controls a permanent collection of over two million works divided into 17 different departments.  

Seeing over two million pieces of art could take days by itself. So, it’s highly recommended that you plan for this part of your trip and already know what you want to see. At the very least, be sure to find Van Gogh, Hatshepsut Seated, the Temple of Dendur, and the Greek and Roman Statue Court.  

Discover the neighborhoods of SoHo, The Village and Little Italy

SoHo is an upscale residential and high-end shopping area where you’ll enjoy some of NYC’s best people-watching. Stroll up and down the area’s cobblestoned streets , admiring the rows of shops and houses. If you’re in the mood for a sweet treat, be sure to stop by the Dominique Ansel Bakery and order one of the legendary Cronuts.  

If you’re in the mood to keep walking, you can continue on to West Village or Greenwich Village . If not, find a posh SoHo restaurant and enjoy some food. Some of the best places to eat in Soho include Antique Garage, Blue Ribbon Brasserie, and Dig.  

On day 4 of our 4 Day Itinerary NYC, your final stop is Little Italy. The best part is that if you’re not in the mood for trendy SoHo food, Little Italy is the quintessential dining spot ! You’ll find local favorites such as Lombardi’s Pizza, Onieal’s, and Angelo’s of Mulberry Street .  

Yet, Little Italy is so much more than just an excellent place to eat. This area is also home to many historic landmarks, street art, gorgeous architecture, mafia locations, TV and movie locations, and the perfect place to find upscale consignment shops!

Are 4 days in New York City enough?

I think 4 days for New York is great, because you have more time than if you only visit the Big Apple for a weekend. Of course 5 days, 1 week or even 10 days are even better! In the 4 days NYC as in our itinerary you experience the most important neighborhoods and attractions of the city – and that quite relaxed!

Is $1000 enough for 4 days in New York?

Yes! Because if you know how, you can save a lot of money in NYC! First of all, check out the different sightseeing passes for New York . You can easily save 50% on admission to the best attractions in NYC.

What should I pack for 4 days in New York?

This is the most important tip that I have: Wear Comfortable Shoes ! This probably goes without saying, but NYC is best explored on foot, and you will spend a great deal of time walking from one place to another. When you consider that the average New Yorker walks about 10 miles per day just during their daily lives, you’ll see that comfortable shoes are a must!

What else do you need? This depends a bit on your travel time: 2 shorts or long pants, 2-3 t-shirts and a sweater are sufficient for the warm months. In the colder months you should definitely have several warm sweaters and a jacket!

How much is a 4-day trip to NYC?

If you’re in New York for 4 days, the hotel and food will use up most of your travel budget. A 3 star hotel in Midtown Manhattan starts at $100 per night , a 4 star hotel is $150 and prices for a night in a 5 star hotel start at $300 , so expect overnight costs of $300, $450 and $900 respectively for 3 nights.

For breakfast in the diner you can calculate with $15 per person and in the restaurants with $40 per person . Of course, it can quickly be more expensive.

Sightseeing costs: I can’t stress this enough: be sure to check out the various New York City sightseeing passes. It’s a simple and easy way to save 50% off the regular admission price. For the New York Pass for 4 days you can visit as many attractions as you want. It costs you just $200!

How do you plan a 4 day trip?

What is important to me when planning a trip with 4 days in NYC, I have already implemented in the above itinerary. The attractions you see per day should be close to each other, so you don’t waste a lot of time by communing.

Furthermore, you should plan enough time where you just do nothing else but let New York City work its magic on you. This is best done in one of the many cafes or during a walk along the High Line or 5th Avenue.

Book review: A road trip from New York to Alaska opens a reluctant traveler to beauty and healing

“Out of the Dark”

By Marian Elliott; Cirque Press, 2024; 303 pages; $15.

A woman suffers the loss of her 19-year-old son and falls into a near-paralyzing depression. Her husband leaves their home in Long Island, New York, and moves to Florida, forbidding her to accompany him. He insists that she wants to visit relatives teaching in Toksook Bay, Alaska, and buys a camper for the trip. Accompanied by her son’s elderly shepherd-collie mix, she sets out on a road trip, unsure of where or how far she might go and really wanting only to join her husband in Florida.

This is the disquieting start to a story labeled memoir, told by Wasilla resident Marian Elliott. Memoirs generally employ an “I” to tell a true story, but “Out of the Dark” features a main character named Jeanne, an apparent stand-in for the author. (To avoid confusion, the book might have been called an autobiographical novel, based on the writer’s life but with the freedom to change identities and employ details and conversations to meet the story’s demands. There are other distinctions between memoirs and fiction, but the author must have had her reasons for choosing a third-person perspective.)

In any case, Elliott has told a compelling story with several angles. The first third of the book centers on the tragedy of losing a child to a senseless accident, the family’s inability to talk of the young man or his death, and the failing marriage. (As Jeanne learns when she finally attends a grief support group, a majority of marriages falter after such a tragedy.) Jeanne suffers emotional and mental anguish, worsened by her husband blaming her, without reason, for the death and otherwise undermining her sense of reality. He proves to be a champion of gaslighting and manipulation: “Do you have any idea how lucky you are? I know people who would give anything to go to Alaska. I wish I were going.”

Much of the remaining book is essentially a road trip, as Jeanne and the dog Gulliver, to whom she is devoted, travel together. Beginning in September, they first tour through a region she actually wants to visit — Canada’s Maritime Provinces. She seeks out ocean views and other restorative places. A single woman with an old dog draws attention, and she readily makes friends with other campers, residents, and a philosophical hitchhiker who asks, “Did you ever wonder if you met yourself on the road in a strange place, you’d recognize who you were?” The year was 1980, and her own trust and kindness seemed to invite that of others. She runs into the same travelers repeatedly, accepts invitations to visit others in their homes, and maintains correspondences for months and perhaps years afterward. When she mentions Alaska, some she meets are excited by the idea but most raise their eyebrows, especially about heading north so late in the season. Toksook Bay? She doesn’t seem to know, herself, that the Yup’ik village is not just “Alaska” but on an island far to the west, facing the Bering Sea.

Halfway through the book, three weeks after leaving her home, she’s firmly against continuing to Alaska. “She needed to make Gary (her husband) understand the Alaska trip was not going to happen.” But after a stop at her daughter’s college near Buffalo, N.Y., her husband on a phone call demands that she continue to Alaska and she agrees to drive as far as the Canadian Rockies.

Time on the road and in the narrative speeds up considerably after that. Jeanne learns that her husband has another woman in Florida — something readers might have deduced much earlier. “The only choice she could see was to go forward. Why not keep driving until she figured things out? Who knew what the road had to offer?” She drives up the Alaska Highway, where she runs out of gas and is rescued by kind men. She drives through whiteout snowstorms. In Whitehorse the dog has a medical emergency, other kind people help her, and she rushes on to Fairbanks to reach a veterinarian.

To tell much more of the story would give too much away, but suffice it to say that the old dog’s condition keeps Jeanne in Alaska until spring. She does actually get to Toksook Bay, surprised by the small plane, the numerous stops in and around Bethel, and her relatives’ request to bring a box of fruits and vegetables.

Throughout her travels, even as she continues to grieve for her son, Jeanne finds much to love about the world, in people and in nature. When a raven flies over her head in the quiet of British Columbia, the woman from New York is stunned to hear, for the first time in her life, the sound of a bird’s wings. Later, she’s entranced by the song and sight of a dipper (water ouzel), “flying just above the surface of the water following the curve of the creek. He settled on a boulder downstream and with the burbling waters rushing around him, he sang out again an ebullient medley in whistles and trills.”

In the end, “Out of the Dark” is a story of trust, self-knowledge, and healing. The journey with Jeanne/Elliott satisfies not only as a road trip marked by the kindnesses of strangers; readers will delight in the company of a woman traveler who grows into the self she’s in fact happy to recognize.

Brisk, cool mornings give way to sun-warmed afternoons, and the dropping temperatures create a kaleidoscope of colors as the leaves change before winter sets in. The displays of color are different across the U.S., but they're all brilliant when leaf-peeping season is at its peak.

Peak leaf season varies by region and by year, depending on the weather, so it's best to check with local sources before you go. Many top destinations to view fall's splendor have leaf and foliage maps and trackers so you can follow the local predictions and current conditions – and arrive just in time for the best of the season. Some of these destinations will be familiar, while others are lesser-known locales where you can capture and embrace fall's beauty.

So, pack your jacket and jeans, then grab your camera to capture one of nature's best spectacle.

Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia National Park covers nearly 50,000 acres along the rocky coast of Maine. Located about 160 miles northeast of Portland, the park boasts the diverse natural beauty of the Atlantic shoreline, including majestic mountains. Peak leaf season in Acadia traditionally falls in the middle of October. This is when you'll see the vibrant displays of oranges, reds and yellows, especially along the Acadia All-American Road, one of the best scenic drives to view the fall colors.

While visiting Acadia , plan to stay at the nearby coastal town of Bar Harbor , considered to be the gateway to the park. Bar Harbor Inn & Spa , situated along picturesque Frenchman Bay, is an outstanding choice for an overnight stay: The historic property offers impressive views of the water as well as Maine's Porcupine Islands. The 34-mile McKenzie River Scenic Byway extends from the vineyards of the Willamette Valley to the forests of the Cascade Mountains in Oregon , treating travelers and road-trippers to views of some of the Pacific Northwest's most beautiful landscapes. Plan your visit for peak season when the golds and reds are most vibrant, usually in mid-to-late October.

The McKenzie River boasts some of the best fly-fishing in Oregon, so anglers will want to cast off for native redside rainbow and cutthroat trout along the way. Other highlights include stops at local farm stands and at Goodpasture Bridge in Vida, which is the state's second-longest covered bridge. For an extended romantic getaway that includes days spent fly-fishing, whitewater rafting and hiking to waterfalls, make reservations at the Eagle Rock Lodge, a bed-and-breakfast for couples in Vida.

The Berkshires, Massachusetts

Situated about 130 miles west of Boston and surrounded by mountains, the Berkshires are one of the most scenic places to view fall foliage in New England . The leaves begin changing at the end of September, but peak season starts around mid-October. You can expect to see colors ranging from golden yellows to vivid oranges to deep reds. If you're up for a hike, take the Stony Ledge trail from the Williamstown side of Mount Greylock, the highest peak in Massachusetts at nearly 3,500 feet. This route offers one of the best viewing points of the foliage from midway up the mountain.

Back on the ground, the Berkshires feature world-class arts and entertainment offerings along with a deep-rooted food culture with many locally focused dining options. Charlottesville, Virginia

Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia, Charlottesville offers spectacular scenery accentuated by fall's vivid hues. Mid-to-late October is when you'll usually see the most dazzling red, orange and yellow leaves, but the colors can linger into early November, depending on the weather. Some of the best viewing spots with scenic overlooks are along the neighboring Blue Ridge Parkway and the connecting Skyline Drive in nearby Shenandoah National Park .

When you're not leaf peeping, plan to visit Thomas Jefferson's Monticello: the former home, gardens and grounds of the third U.S. president. Travel along the Monticello Wine Trail to sample some of Virginia's award-winning vintages at wineries such as Michael Shaps Wineworks, Barboursville Vineyards and Jefferson Vineyards. In the evenings, travelers can unwind over a seasonally inspired dinner at Marigold by Jean-Georges before settling in at the beautiful luxury property Keswick Hall.

Bucks County, Pennsylvania

Bucks County's picturesque country roads and covered bridges create an idyllic setting for viewing fall's colorful palette. Located in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania and bordered by New Jersey and the Delaware River to the east, Bucks County has a rich Revolutionary War history and is known for its thriving cultural and arts community. Peak leaf season typically occurs in mid-October, bringing vibrant hues of yellows, oranges and reds to the area.

For a scenic escape to the Pennsylvania countryside, make reservations at The Inn at Barley Sheaf Farm, a luxury B&B in Holicong. The yellows, oranges and reds are usually the most vivid from mid-October and later, with peak colors appearing at the end of the month. For active adventures in the colorful scenery, go hiking, biking or horseback riding. You can also hop on board a train ride into the forest on the French Lick Scenic Railway. When you want to kick back and relax, spend an afternoon sipping wine with a view on a Fall Foliage Wine Cruise on Patoka Lake.

There are three hotels to choose from at the historic French Lick Resort, including the newest property, the 71-room Valley Tower Hotel. A must-see no matter which property you choose is the stunning atrium at the West Baden Springs Hotel . Spanning 200 feet wide and constructed more than a century ago, this engineering feat was once known as the "Eighth Wonder of the World." The Mississippi River Valley, Minnesota

Colorful wooded bluffs, steep hillsides and quaint river towns are all highlights of the Mississippi River Valley region in southern Minnesota – best enjoyed on a leisurely drive. The nearly 90-mile route from the town of Red Wing to La Crescent on U.S. Route 61 also features scenic overlooks, including two must-see locations at Great River Bluffs and Frontenac state parks. This drive along the Mississippi River – part of the 3,000-mile Great River Road, which begins in Minnesota and runs south through 10 states to conclude in Louisiana – celebrates peak fall colors from late September to mid-October.

As you take in the brilliant hues of russet, red and gold along the ride, be sure to stop for an afternoon snack at a roadside apple stand. Bird lovers may be eager to see the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Minnesota. While in this town, grab dinner and a beer before spending the night at Turning Waters Bed, Breakfast and Brewery. Breckenridge, Colorado

Situated at 9,600 feet above sea level in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Breckenridge is one of the first places in Colorado to witness fall's brilliant changing of the leaves. While the aspen trees' golds, reds and oranges usually peak by late September, the season can linger into early October. For optimal leaf viewing, plan to drive the 22-mile Boreas Pass: This route begins in Como and heads north to Breckenridge.

While visiting, enjoy brisk fall days hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding or fly-fishing surrounded by the beauty of the Rockies. If you're in town in mid-September, don your best alpine gear and attend the festivities at Breckenridge Oktoberfest. Hudson, New York

Willamette Valley, Oregon

Fall is harvest season in the Willamette Valley and one of the best times to visit the renowned wine region. The days are sunny and cool during peak foliage, which typically falls around mid-October. Leaf peepers can expect to see brilliant hues of yellow, orange and red against the deep green shade of the evergreen Douglas fir – the state tree of Oregon. Willamette Valley is home to more than 700 wineries, with many producing internationally acclaimed vintages, so you may want to hire a private guide to craft your itinerary around the best wines and the best views.

McMinnville is situated in the heart of wine country and is a perfect base for exploring the region. Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

Set in the White Mountains of New Hampshire , Bretton Woods is one of the top destinations in the state to view fall foliage. Leaf-peeping season begins in mid-September and continues through late October – this is when the most vibrant yellows, oranges, reds and even purples will paint the surrounding mountains. Due to the many tree species, it can be hard to predict peak foliage in this area, but you'll likely have the most luck around the second week of October.

To enjoy the spectacle for several days, make reservations at the Omni Mount Washington Resort . This historic property sits at the base of the highest peak in the Northeast, giving guests a front-row seat to the show. During your stay, dash through the treetops on a zip line canopy tour, enjoy a scenic horse-drawn carriage ride or take a thrilling trip on the Mount Washington Cog Railway. You may also opt to take in the sights on a gondola ride and have lunch atop the mountain. Back on the ground, book a signature spa treatment and relax with expansive views of the Presidential Range, Crawford Notch and Mount Washington from the therapy rooms.

Northwoods, Wisconsin

The northern part of the state offers some of the best foliage viewing in Wisconsin, typically between mid-September and early October, when you can see vibrant shades of orange, red, yellow and purple. Visitors can stop at dozens of unique sites featuring artisan jewelry, pottery, woodwork, glass pieces, sculpting, painting and more throughout the Northwoods.

Stop for a few days in Boulder Junction to see more of the area and take in some of the outdoor activities, such as hiking, biking, fishing, golfing, kayaking and more. Located in Vilas County, the charming town is home to hundreds of biking and hiking trails and nearly as many lakes. You'll also find cute local shops to peruse and casual restaurants downtown and on Main Street. Take your pick of rustic cabin-style accommodations and private rentals or reserve a room at one of the motor lodges in town: Boulder Bear or Boulder Junction.

Highlands, North Carolina

This picturesque mountain town sits at more than 4,100 feet in elevation on the Highlands Plateau in the Nantahala National Forest. Highlands is also located in a temperate rainforest, so the vegetation is lush and there are many waterfalls, rivers and lakes to explore in and around the area. Leaf-peeping season typically begins in mid-October, when you'll see leaves starting to turn bright yellow and orange, as well as deeper hues of red, rust and even purple.

There are many active outdoor activities to enjoy in this region, such as hiking, fly-fishing and golfing, but the community also has a vibrant cultural arts scene. During your visit, check out the exhibits at The Bascom (a visual arts center), as well as events at the Highlands Performing Arts Center and the new Mountain Theater Company. While in town, reserve accommodations at Old Edwards Inn and Spa . This beautiful Relais & Châteaux property, located in the heart of Highlands, puts visitors within walking distance of the many restaurants and boutiques located on Main Street.

Whidbey Island, Washington

The 55-mile Whidbey Isle Scenic Way is one of the driving routes along Puget Sound in what's known as "Washington's ultimate road trip": the Cascade Loop. Peak color along the loop typically occurs between late September to mid-October with brilliant shades of gold, orange, and red – and you'll have plenty of opportunities for leaf peeping with all the farms, parks, mountains and wineries along the way. The scenic drive on Whidbey Island begins as you cross over historic Deception Pass Bridge and head south toward the largest town on the island, Oak Harbor. This coastal city is home to Deception Pass State Park and many Garry white oak trees that are native to the Pacific Coast.

In Coupeville, the second-oldest town in the state, more than 100 buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Stop for photos at Fort Casey State Park and the Admiralty Head Lighthouse before feasting on local Penn Cove mussels at one of the waterfront restaurants. Other highlights on the drive include Greenbank Farm, where you can sample local wines and cheeses surrounded by the Olympic Mountains and the Cascade Range, as well as the town of Langley, known as the "Village by the Sea." This charming artsy community sits atop a bluff overlooking the Saratoga Passage and the Cascade Mountains.

Letchworth State Park, New York

Letchworth State Park, fondly known as the "Grand Canyon of the East," is home to some of the most striking fall foliage views in the U.S. The park's 14,300-plus acres of lush forest usually hit their peak in early-to-mid-October, when leaf peepers will be treated to yellow, orange and red foliage framing the magnificent Genesee Gorge and Genesee River. Explore this unique setting on miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, including the park's new Autism Nature Trail, a milelong hiking loop with marked sensory stations. You can also take to the skies in a hot air balloon with Balloons Over Letchworth, the only company that launches from inside the gorge.

While you're visiting Letchworth State Park, be sure to check out the surrounding Wyoming and Livingston counties for fun fall activities. You can soak in the views in Wyoming County with a Fall Foliage Train Ride on the Arcade & Attica Railroad, or head to Livingston for a free ranger-led walking tour of the Mount Morris Dam. When you're ready to relax, explore local craft beer, wine, cider and spirits along the LivCo Libation Loop. Stay the night in the heart of Letchworth State Park at the Glen Iris Inn, which offers convenient access to both counties and overlooks Middle Falls on the Genesee River.

Tunnel of Trees, Upper Peninsula of Michigan

Known as the Tunnel of Trees, this 20-mile scenic route follows the historic Michigan 119 highway between Harbor Springs and Cross Village. The area's canopies of golds, oranges, yellows and crimsons are on display typically from late September to mid-October. A few highlights for travelers include visiting the picturesque waterfront resort town of Harbor Springs and sampling authentic Polish cuisine at the iconic Legs Inn restaurant in Cross Village.

For overnight lodging, plan to stay at The Highlands, a Boyne Resort in Harbor Springs. This property offers many outdoor activities, including zip lining, horseback riding, biking and swimming. While here, reserve a seat on the Heather Express chairlift: This excursion to the top of the mountain affords incredible views of Little Traverse Bay, Harbor Springs and the area's beautiful fall foliage.

North Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada

North Lake Tahoe, which unfurls across both California and Nevada, is surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America, so there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure, from kayaking and paddleboarding to boating and relaxing on the area's many beaches. When it comes to viewing fall's splendor, hundreds of biking and hiking trails with 10-plus different species of native trees show off the red, orange and yellow foliage.

The best time to see the colorful leaves is from about mid-September to late October, especially at the top leaf-peeping locales: Tahoe Meadows, Ellis Peak, Mount Rose Summit and Sugar Pine Point State Park. For a memorable getaway, book accommodations at the Everline Resort & Spa at the base of Olympic Valley. Amenities at this luxury resort include a golf course with a view, a luxurious spa and various outdoor experiences, such as guided fly-fishing trips, hiking and backpacking.

The Ozarks, Arkansas

Situated in the northern part of Arkansas , the Ozark Mountains are the perfect destination to explore the outdoors and marvel at autumn's palette of bright golds, reds and oranges. The transformation typically begins around the second week of October, and peak colors appear by late October. One of the top spots to view the foliage is in the Buffalo National River area around the small town of Ponca. This beautiful wilderness destination in the mountains offers the opportunity to disconnect and get away from it all.

While here, take time to hike or float down the river – all the while keeping an eye out for wild elk. Fall is when the bulls are battling to become king of the herd, so they're especially active during this time of year. Plan to reserve one of the cabins in the mountains above Ponca. Vantage points from these properties yield incredible stargazing opportunities, as well as memorable sunrise and sunset views.

Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byway, Maryland

The roughly 40-mile scenic drive from Emmitsburg to Point of Rocks runs along U.S. Route 15 in Maryland . Known as "hallowed ground" and considered sacred by some, this long stretch of road highlights significant Civil War sites and pristine natural areas, including Catoctin Mountain Park, home to the presidential residence Camp David. The best time to make the journey to view the foliage on the Maryland route is between late September and early November, with peak season around mid-October.

One not-to-be-missed detour is a stop to see the 78-foot waterfall and gorge in Cunningham Falls State Park. If you're after a challenging hike with great views, travelers say Sugarloaf Mountain in Dickerson can't be missed. Afterward, spend time exploring the shops, art galleries, distilleries, breweries and restaurants in the historic city of Frederick. You can book an overnight stay at one of the charming local B&Bs, such as 10 Clarke. If you're up for more fall festivities, visit nearby Gaver Farm in Mount Airy, whose Fall Fun Fest has a corn maze and more than 65 attractions, including a zip line, a chicken show, jumping pillows and giant slides.

Adirondacks, New York

The Adirondacks offer leaf peepers 10 distinct regional destinations covering more than 6 million acres in the northeast corner of New York state. Adventurers can head to the Lake Placid region in late September and early October to hike the Adirondack High Peaks, which offer the best mountain vistas during peak fall foliage. While you're in the region, be sure to visit the Olympic Jumping Complex. Visitors can take an elevator to the top of the ski jumps for a bird's-eye view of the Adirondacks before heading back down on a zip line.

In the first two weeks of October, you'll find peak leaf peeping around Lake George, a popular vacation spot with 109 miles of shoreline and 300-plus islands. Hike nearby Prospect Mountain for a breathtaking view overlooking the lake's beautiful blue waters and the vibrant yellows, oranges and reds of the surrounding forest. For an authentic Adirondack stay without sacrificing resort luxuries, book a vacation rental at The Lodges at Cresthaven. Located on the shores of Lake George, this resort property offers a host of amenities along with Adirondack decor and panoramic views of the lake.

Anchorage to Kenai, Alaska

The epic landscapes of Alaska are awash with vibrant reds, purples, yellows and oranges – and even snow-capped mountaintops – from late August through September as fall arrives in The Great Land. The autumn colors across the state's vast wilderness, forests and tundra change quickly as winter approaches, beginning in mid-to-late August in the Arctic regions and lasting as late as October in southern areas like Tongass National Forest.

This roughly 160-mile drive on the Seward and Sterling highways from Anchorage to Kenai travels along two National Scenic Byways. You'll find many vantage points along the way to take in the jaw-dropping views and capture photos. The first 50 miles of Seward Highway follow the Chugach Mountains and the shoreline of Turnagain Arm, where you may catch a glimpse of Dall sheep, beluga whales and eagles. From Tern Lake to Skilak Lake on Sterling Highway, you won't want to miss the sight of the Kenai River's teal glacial waters set against the orange and yellow leaves.

For a side trip en route, visitors can plan to stay in one of the recently refreshed Signature Rooms at the beautiful Alyeska Resort, about 40 miles southeast of Anchorage. Indulge in a day at the Alyeska Nordic Spa and, if you visit by mid-September, take a ride on the aerial tramway to the top of Mount Alyeska for panoramic views from above. Be sure to save up enough energy to chase the aurora borealis in the wee morning hours, as the northern lights dance across the night sky from mid-August to mid-April in Alaska .

The Poconos, Pennsylvania

One of the best ways to view the Pocono Mountains' vibrant fall hues of reds, yellows, oranges and purples is with a scenic drive along U.S. Route 6 in Pennsylvania. This road meanders through charming towns like Milford, Hawley and Honesdale, where you can take in autumn festivities that include the Hawley Harvest Hoedown and Honesdale's Harvest and Heritage Days. Another optimal viewing spot for the foliage is the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area with its 70,000 acres of forests and wetlands, the two tallest waterfalls in the state, and more than 150 miles of hiking trails.

The peak season for vibrant leaves in the Poconos depends on the region (north or south) and the progression of temperatures in the fall, but you can typically expect the best viewing from mid-September through the peak season in early-to-mid-October. You can also book an early-morning Elk Bugling Tour at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park to see the Roosevelt elk sparring during their "rut," or breeding season. North Conway, New Hampshire

With dozens of foot hike options through the surrounding 700,000 acres of protected forest, there's no shortage of leaf-peeping opportunities. Peak colors typically paint the landscape with vibrant hues of red, orange and yellow from the end of September into the first two weeks of October.

A ride along the Kancamagus Highway – affectionately called "The Kanc" by locals – is a must-do. The 34-mile scenic drive will immerse you in a fall wonderland as it winds through the New Hampshire countryside, but make sure to fill your tank before you set off, as there are no gas stations or stores along the highway.

The highest summit in Great Smoky Mountains National Park , Clingmans Dome, sits at 6,643 feet and offers one of the best views of the foliage, with panoramic vistas from a 54-foot observation tower. The 11-mile one-way loop at Cades Cove (accessible from the nearby town of Townsend, Tennessee) is another top spot for seeing the colorful display in the park. This scenic valley features hiking trails, historic homesites, a visitor center, a campground, a riding stable and a picnic area.

Clingmans Dome and Cades Cove can be very busy with tourists in the fall, so another option is to take a drive on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, which is a round-trip scenic route from downtown Gatlinburg. FY 2025 per diem highlights

We establish the per diem rates for the continental United States (CONUS), which includes the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia. Federal agencies use the per diem rates to reimburse their employees for subsistence expenses incurred while on official travel.

Federal per diem rates consist of a maximum lodging allowance component and a meals and incidental expenses (M&IE) component. The standard rate of $178 ($110 lodging, $68 M&IE) applies to most of CONUS. For fiscal year (FY) 2025, there are 296 non-standard areas (NSAs) that have per diem rates higher than the standard rate.

Since FY 2005, we have based the maximum lodging allowances on average daily rate (ADR) data. ADR is a widely accepted lodging industry measure derived from a property’s room rental revenue divided by the number of rooms rented. This calculation provides us with the average rate in an area. For more information about how lodging per diem rates are determined, visit Factors influencing lodging rates .

We remind agencies that the Federal Travel Regulation (FTR) allows for actual expense reimbursement when per diem rates are insufficient to meet necessary expenses. Please see FTR § § 301-11.300 through 11.306 for more information.

FY 2025 results

The standard CONUS lodging rate increased from $107 to $110. The M&IE rate tiers were revised for FY 2025; they were last revised in FY 2022. The standard M&IE rate increased from $59 to $68, and the M&IE rate tiers for non-standard areas increased from $59-$79 to $68-$92.

When a military installation or Government - related facility(whether or not specifically named) is located partially within more than one city or county boundary, the applicable per diem rate for the entire installation or facility is the higher of the rates which apply to the cities and / or counties, even though part(s) of such activities may be located outside the defined per diem locality.

Breaking news, tim walz taught at china’s state-run macau polytechnic university until at least 2007.

Tim Walz lectured on international relations at a state-run university in China and made dozens of trips to the Communist country — many of them now under scrutiny a week after he was chosen as the Democratic vice presidential candidate.

US Congressman Jim Banks of Indiana is demanding the Pentagon investigate whether the Minnesota governor complied with foreign travel reporting requirements “for his security clearance during his many trips,” some of which took place while he was a senior ranking member of his state’s Army National Guard.

In a letter to the Pentagon  Tuesday, Republican Banks called the situation “an obvious security risk.”

Walz was a visiting fellow at the CCP-sanctioned Macau Polytechnic University until at least 2007, according to public filings and press reports. The school was established in 1981 and subscribes to the vision of China’s Belt and Road Initiative — a massive infrastructure program that is the cornerstone of Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s aggressive pursuit of influence overseas.

“We do this in alignment with China’s Belt and Road Initiative,” reads a statement from Marcus Im Sio Kei, the rector of the Macau Polytechnic University, on  the school’s website . “We are committed to cultivate talented individuals to serve the country and Macau.”

Macau, a former Portuguese colony, was taken over by China in December 1999.

In addition to teaching in Macau, Walz has taken more than 30 trips to China, beginning in the spring of 1989 during the massacre of pro-democracy activists in Tiananmen Square, which was universally condemned by the West.

During that first trip, Walz spent a year teaching under the auspices of World Teach, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based nonprofit that sends volunteers to teach in developing countries. The group, which was started by former Harvard University students, has partnered with Changsha Yuanjing Education Consulting Limited, a company affiliated with China’s Ministry of Public Security, according to public records.

“As a young man I was just going to teach high school in Foshan in Guangdong province and was in Hong Kong in May 1989,” he told a Congressional panel on China in 2014. Walz taught American culture and English as a second language to 1,000 high school and middle-school students each week, he said.

“As the events were unfolding, several of us went in,” he said. “I still remember the train station in Hong Kong. There was a large number of people — especially Europeans, I think — very angry that we would still go after what had happened.”

For China expert Derek Scissors, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, DC, traveling to China during the Tiananmen crackdown “was a mistake.”

“Any individual traveling dozens of times to an adversary nation in a personal capacity while having access to classified information poses an obvious security risk,” Banks wrote in the Aug. 12 letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. “An individual with a clearance should have had the good judgement not to engage in such travel in the first place, and any superiors or security officers for that individual are obliged to prevent such risky behavior.”

US service members are ordered to report on such trips, but “especially” so when dealing with an adversarial country, and are “required to complete debriefing questionnaires” and report any suspicious behavior they encountered, said Banks

It’s not clear if Walz reported his trips to China to his superiors in the National Guard. Requests for comment were not returned Wednesday.

“The obvious question is did Walz have a [security] clearance and at what level?” said Scissors.

While he noted that attitudes around China changed in the mid 1990s during a period of engagement with the Communist country, Scissors said that traveling there as an active duty US service member could be problematic.

After his first trip to the country, Walz gushed about receiving numerous gifts from his hosts. “No matter how long I live, I will never be treated that well again,” Walz, 60, recounted in 1990 after teaching American history, culture and English in Foshan in southern China.

Walz, a former high-school teacher, organized annual trips for US students to China.

In 1995, he and his wife registered a for-profit company in Nebraska to take high-school students on trips to the Communist country. Gwen Walz, a former teacher and school administrator, is listed as the president of Educational Travel Adventures, while Walz is listed as the secretary and treasurer of the company that was incorporated using their home address in Mankato, Minn., according to public documents.

They married a year earlier on June 4, 1994, the fifth anniversary of the end of the deadly Tiananmen protests. “He wanted a date he’ll always remember,” Gwen told the Scottsbluff Star-Herald in 1994. The two spent their honeymoon there, according to the paper.

“The toughest part was learning to tell them apart and memorizing their names, [Walz] said,” the Star-Herald reported at the time, adding, “in China students thought all Americans looked alike.”

Later, Walz advocated for human rights in the country, co-sponsoring the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2017 that called for the release of Nobel Peace Prize winner and activist Liu Xiaobo, before the activist’s death in July of that year.
