With over 190 miles of beautiful sandy beaches, wonderful resorts, and world-class golf, it’s surprising the Riviera Nayarit is now firmly on the tourist the radar. Punta Mita and Nuevo Vallarta are probably the most well-known towns in this vast region, and home to the biggest resorts, but Riviera Nayarit also hosts charming little beach towns that are worth a visit. For those whose ideal vacation involves snoozing under a straw umbrella on a gorgeous sandy beach, the shoreline is beautiful and varied. The most popular beaches are on Banderas Bay, but it’s worth exploring the beautiful stretches of sand farther north. Sayulita and San Pancho are wonderful picks and offer good waves along with plenty of bohemian charm. If you’re after something more adrenaline-pumping, opt for zip lining, surfing, hiking; and even rock climbing. While the rainy season is, well, rainy, showers usually only take place in the evening for a couple of hours. Plus, the temperatures rarely dip below the 70s at night and the high hovers above the 80s during the day year-round, so outdoor activities can be enjoyed even in the off-season.

Merida , the largest city in the state of Yucatan (the western part of the Yucatan Peninsula), has developed a distinct culture that combines influences from its Mayan, Spanish, French, and British history. A trip to “The White City,” as it’s known, usually includes a tour of Mayan ruins, beautiful cathedrals, and distinctive examples of architecture that are rarely seen elsewhere. These days, it’s making a name for itself among culture seekers and foodies as well. Merida is land-locked, but if you’re after the beach, simply head north to Progreso, where you may spot flamingos in the lagoon if you’re lucky.

This is barefoot island life in the extreme, with a laid-back pace, just enough yoga and wellness spots, and great local cuisine that makes unplugging a true dream. Even better? The location is great for seeing whale sharks, pelicans, flamingos, and other wildlife.

Mazatlan is undergoing something of a rediscovery these days. You see, Hollywood stars once flocked to Mazatlan in the 1950s before the town fell on hard times the 1970s and ’80s as Acapulco became the place to be. However, Mazatlan is once again drawing in-the-know travelers. Old Mazatlan has hotels and restaurants located in restored 19th-century buildings, creating charming places to unwind for a long weekend. You’ll find plenty of dazzling sights there. Dia de los Muertos celebrations are also quite lovely in the town’s historic center. Alternatively, bars and nightclubs are the name of the game in Mazatlan’s Zona Dorada. The four-mile malecon (boardwalk) is the best place to stroll and take in the sunset. Oh, and eight miles of pretty beaches is what brought the stars to Mazatlan years ago and continues to lure new visitors today. Known as Bajio Mexicano, this region is home to fertile plains, tropical jungles and arid deserts. Here you’ll find many traces of Mexico’s colonial past: historical monuments, Franciscan Missions, mines; all feature on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

Central Mexico

But it’s the bus network which really stands out. Travelling by bus can save you a lot of money and is a relatively comfortable way to travel. Obviously, having a car will afford you a little more freedom, but car rental can be expensive and away from the 6000 km of motorways, the secondary roads can be somewhat difficult to navigate.

We have often considered settling down in Mexico when we retire. Each time we visit México, we love it! We haven’t visited everywhere in the country but love to add a new destination each time we go down. So we combined our extensive travels with Nathan of The TRVL Blog to showcase the best places to visit in Mexico.

Mexico is a country made up of 758,000 square miles and 31 states. Bordering the United States and the Latin America countries of Belize and Guatemala, Mexico is a land of pyramids, jungles, beautiful beaches, and sprawling resort towns.

From the bustling capital city, Mexico City, to the quiet towns of Baja California Sur , Mexico gives you all the variety you need. Mexico is diverse and on our list of must-visit places in Mexico, we’ve included a variety of destinations to suit all tastes. So sit back and start planning your trip to Mexico today.

1. Yucatán Peninsula

When exploring the Yucatan, there are so many destinations that it is best to settle on one place as your base so that you can go back again and again. Consisting of the Mexican States of the Yucatan, Quintana Roo, and Campeche chances are you are going to visit the Yucatan Peninsula.

Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula is by far one of the most popular places to visit in Mexico. Jutting out between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea this beautiful peninsula is the most popular tourist destination in Mexico. It houses some of Mexico’s top attractions and destinations. It houses the popular beach towns of Cancun, Cozumel , Playa Del Carmen and so much more. At 197,000 square km (76,300 square miles) there is a lot to see and do here.

Cancun is the most famous of all the cities in the Yucatan Peninsula. This resort town is party central and a popular tourist destination for students on Spring Break. It was the first place we visited in Mexico and probably the first stop for most people and with good reason.

There are plenty of resorts to suit all budgets and types of travel including all inclusive resorts that cater to couples-only and adults-only resorts for a quieter more romantic escape. The last time we visited Cancun we stayed on the Cancun Riviera at The Excellence in nearby Puerto Morales and loved the luxury all-inclusive escape.

From Cancun, there are countless day trips, water sports, adventures, and Mayan ruins to explore. So don’t let its reputation turn you off, it’s popular for a reason. Famous for the ancient ruins of Tulum Tulum is located in the south of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.. While these ruins aren’t our favorite in Mexico, they do have the most awe-inspiring setting of all the Mexican ruins .

Sitting atop high cliffs on the Caribbean Sea, the ancient Mayan city of Tulum had the best view in the house. What makes Tulum popular to tourists besides day trips to the ruins, is its stretch of white sandy beaches. Read more: The Best Tulum All Inclusive Resorts

Where to Stay in Tulum

• Generations Riviera Maya Resort  is one of the best all-inclusive resorts if you want to be situated right on the coastline.
• Kore Tulum Retreat  is a stunning adults-only resort amid Tulum’s Hotel Zone. When we say central, we mean it; you are just steps away from Tulum’s archaeological sites. 
• Bahia Principe Grand Tulum  is one of the best all-inclusive resorts in Tulum. Its all-inclusive resort package includes all meals – giving you a definite head start on saving money when staying in Tulum.

4. Rio Secreto Cenote

The resorts along its turquoise waters are quieter than the other resort areas making for a more off-the-beaten-path vacation than the busier city of Cancun. If you want to explore Cenotes, this is the place to do it, Tulum has a high concentration of these breathtaking underground sinkholes. One of our first proper scuba diving trips was to Cozumel and with good reason. This island off the east coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula in the Caribbean Sea, Cozumel a popular tourist destination for divers drawing visitors to explore its waters from around the world to view its marine life and coral reefs. This island has some of the best scuba diving on earth within its waters. Don’t worry if you are not a diver, you can go snorkeling as well.

Many people visit Cozumel on a day trip from Cancun or Playa del Carmen, but staying on this island truly has a Caribbean vibe. There are all-inclusive resorts on Cozumel, some small Mayan ruins, and plenty of beautiful beaches. Where to Stay in Cozumel

• Presidente InterContinental Cozumel Resort & Spa : Located on a half-mile of private beach, this luxury resort is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, particularly divers and snorkelers, with the island’s best coral reefs nearby.
• Hotel B Cozumel : Combining traditional Mexican design with contemporary style, this boutique hotel offers a unique, artsy vibe. With a location right on the Caribbean Sea, it features a private beach area, a seaside hot tub, and opportunities for snorkeling.

6. Riviera Maya

This stretch of resort area spans from just south of Cancun to Punta Allen which is south of Tulum. The Riviera Maya, (or Mayan Riviera as we like to call it) in southern Mexico houses the best resorts of Cancun , Playa del Carmen , and Cozumel. Chances are if you are looking for an all-inclusive resort, you will set your sights on the Riviera Maya.

This stretch makes for a great base as most tours pick you up right at your hotel and hotels have shuttles to major attractions. Plus, with its location on the Gulf of Mexico, the waters are warm and calm with coral reefs right off the shore making for the perfect beach vacation. 7. Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, “The Island of Women” is mostly visited on a day trip from the mainland but there are resorts on the island where you can stay in paradise.

With white sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, and an abundance of marine life, it’s perfect for water sports, scuba diving and snorkeling or swimming with sea turtles. it is a quieter place in Mexico for a vacation. (unless you stick around the beach where daytrippers come in to party).

The small island is easy to get around by motorscooter or bicycle making for the perfect laid-back vacation. Isla Mujeres is the jumping-off point for whale shark tours and this once-in-a-lifetime tour is something everyone should do when visiting Mexico. 8. Chichen Itza

We were lucky during our visit to the ancient city of Chichen Itzá so many years ago that we could still climb to the top of the Grand Pyramid El Castillo at this UNESCO World Heritage Site then. While you can no longer go up, it is still worth visiting as one of the new 7 Wonders of the World.

This ancient Mayan city is the mother of Mayan Ruins in Mexico with impeccable grounds that have been well preserved.

This is one of the most popular day trips in Mexico and can become very crowded, so if you really want to explore Chichen Itza, consider spending the night nearby so you can get there early to avoid the tour buses. 9. Playa Del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is another famous Mexican beach destination. Located an hour south of Cancun on the Riviera Maya, this is a lovely beach town with plenty of nightlife, shopping, and dining. All of the day trips and activities that you do from Cancun can be done from here and tour operators will pick you up from your hotel.

This resort town has grown a lot over the years and it is no longer the sleepy town we first visited in 1998, but there are still quiet portions. We recommend booking a vacation rental when visiting Playa del Carmen so you can enjoy the beach and the nightlife like a local. Search for places to stay in Playa del Carmen with TripAdvisor.

10. Los Cabos – Cabo San Lucas

Located on the west coast of Mexico on Baja California Sur, Los Cabos is one of the most popular places to visit in Mexico for those living on the West Coast of North America. Los Cabos is a municipality that actually consists of two towns, San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.

The resort strip of Cabo San Lucas lies between the two towns and is filled with all the activities one would expect on a Caribbean Vacation. Albeit, this body of water is on the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. Cabo San Lucas is a touristy town where you’ll find partying and nightlife whereas the beach town of San Jose del Cabo has a more authentic feel where you can get a taste of true Mexican culture.

11. Chiapas

Chiapas is the southernmost state in Mexico and we were completely blown away by the beautiful scenery, Mayan Ruins, and the beautiful colonial town of San Cristobal de Las Casas. Make your base in San Cristobal de Las Casas for an out-of-the-ordinary Mexican vacation. The historic center feels as if you have stepped back in time with cobblestone streets weaving through churches and Spanish architecture. The Indigenous People wear their traditional dress as they do their business in this charming town of southern Mexico.

Visit the Mayan ruins of  Palenque and climb its pyramid in solitude and hike through Canyon del Sumidero. The canyon is as old as the Grand Canyon and reaches 300 meters (1000 fett) into the air. Explore its caves and waterfalls and spider monkeys play overhead.

Izamal is a charming small town located in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, known as the “Yellow City” because of the color of its buildings, particularly the impressive Convento de San Antonio de Padua, a massive 16th-century Franciscan monastery built on top of a Mayan pyramid.,

The Yellow City is built on and around several ancient Mayan pyramids. The most significant of these is Kinich Kak Moo pyramid, one of the largest in Mexico, which visitors can climb for a panoramic view of the City of Hills.

Speaking of canyons, Copper Canyon in Northern Mexico is larger than the Grand Canyon in Arizona! Consisting of six canyons it is a popular place in Mexico to explore by train. Hop aboard the Copper Canyon Railway (The Chihuahua-Pacifico Railway) and take the scenic route from Chihuahua to Los Mochis. Instead of just taking the train, make sure to stay overnight in a hotel overlooking one of the deepest canyons on earth. Located just 2 hours from Mexico City in central Mexico, Puebla is another captivating destination in Mexico that is beloved for its culinary scene and stunning colonial architecture. 16. Puerto Vallarta

I first heard of Puerto Vallarta on the Love Boat when Captain Stubing took his passengers on a Mexican cruise during one of its special episodes. It only took about 30 years to finally make it there, but we thoroughly enjoyed one of the earliest resort areas in Mexico. Located on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, Puerto Vallarta is a beach town that has been a top draw for tourists for decades.

With all-inclusive resorts similar to the likes of Cancun, visitors can indulge in food and nightlife, beautiful beaches, and watersports. The colonial town of Puerto Vallarta sits among the jungle mountains reaching up from the sea and it is one of the premier places on earth to see humpback whales as they migrate through from December to March. Go horseback riding on the beach or scuba diving off its shores. Puerto Vallarta is a place for relaxation or adventure.

18. Tecaté – Rancho La Puerta

Tijuana may be the more famous town on Mexico’s northern border, but nearby Tecate is where we took a quiet retreat at Rancho le Puerto. This wellness retreat is a sanctuary in the mountains and has consistently been named one of the best spa destinations in the world by Condé Naste Traveler. Located just outside the small town of Tecate, we crossed the border from San Diego to explore this lesser-visited place in Mexico. Tecate is the gateway to Mexico’s wine route and to the state of Baja California.

19. Mexico City

What can I say about the Mexican capital city of Mexico City?  It’s impossible to pinpoint one sole aspect of Mexico City, as to why it deserves its name on this list. Is it the food, architecture, museums, art galleries, bars, or shopping? The city center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is filled with significant historical buildings, like the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace.

21. Oaxaca City

If you’re a foodie, you’ll be right at home in Oaxaca City. Nestled at the base of the Sierra Madre Mountains, Oaxaca City Around every corner in this bustling city, you will find local Oaxacan delights to stuff your face with. If you’ve never tasted Oaxacan cheese, now is your chance. Mole is also the thing to try here. Mole comes in many different flavors, so prepare for a serving of hot chicken smothered in a flavorsome thick sauce.

As with many Mexican cities, the colonial architecture will keep you occupied for hours upon hours. When you’ve finished eating your way through and exploring Oaxaca City, take a day trip to Hierve el Agua. Roughly translating to ‘the water boils’ Hierve el Agua is the site of natural springs, where solidified minerals cascade down the cliff’s edge to look like waterfalls. Pretty impressive if you ask me.

22. Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido, located on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca and is a popular destination in Mexico known for its beautiful beaches. It is particularly known for its surfing at Zicatela Beach, known as the “Mexican Pipeline.” It’s one of the best surf spots in the world, attracting professionals and serious amateurs. There are also beaches with calmer waters suitable for beginners. and surfing.

In addition to Zicatela, there are several other gorgeous beaches to explore, such as Playa Carrizalillo, Playa Manzanillo, and Playa Principal. These beaches are great for relaxing, swimming, and snorkeling.

The area around Puerto Escondido is rich in biodiversity. Laguna de Manialtepec, a few kilometers north of the town, is famous for its bioluminescent plankton. There are also opportunities for wildlife spotting, including birds, turtles, and whales. Puerto Escondido is known for its sea turtle conservation efforts. Visitors can participate in release programs, where baby sea turtles are released into the ocean.

Oaxacan cuisine is one of the most renowned in Mexico, and Puerto Escondido is no exception. You can find delicious seafood dishes, traditional Oaxacan mole, tlayudas (Oaxacan pizza), and mezcal, a traditional Mexican spirit. And this city has excellent nightlife with beachfront bars, clubs and live music venues.

23. Ensenada

If you adore food, especially seafood, you will love Ensenada. Every corner in Ensenada is home to no-frills food stands serving up simple-yet-delicious deep-fried prawn or fish tacos.

A soft flour taco, topped with deep-fried prawns, shredded crunchy lettuce, zesty lime juice, a squirt of sour cream, and fiery chili sauce. What more could you ask for? It doesn’t stop there, Ensenada is home to an award-winning ceviche stand. La Guerrerense is the award-winning stand in question. The awards are well deserved. There’s not a day that’s passed where I haven’t thought about that mixed ceviche taco I devoured from La Guerrerense.

24. San Augustinillo

On the Pacific coast of Mexico lies the small fishing village of San Augustinillo. The neighboring towns Mazunte and Zipolite often get the acclaim for this area of the Oaxacan coast, but I’d recommend making a beeline straight to San Augustinillo and forgetting about the more popular and built-up neighboring towns.

There are minimal hotels, cabanas, and restaurants lining the beach in San Augustinillo, so there are no crowds of tourists here. The chances are you’ll have a large area of the beach to yourself. If your thing is relaxing on the beach or catching some waves with the surf or bodyboard, the charming village of San Augustinillo is the place for you.

25. Tequila

Could any trip to Mexico be complete without visiting the home of tequila, Tequila? OK, this could get a bit confusing. Tequila the drink is named after a town in central Mexico named Tequila. This traditional Mexican town is where the drink tequila is produced. Too much tequila? Get used to it, the one and only theme of your day in Tequila will be drinking lots of tequila.

There are distilleries spread across this town, so head for one and learn how the humble agave plant transforms into one of the world’s most popular drinks and of course, sample their own style of tequila. One place that you cannot miss while you’re in the town of Tequila is La Capilla, named in the top 100 bars in the world.

26. Bacalar

Often referred to as the “Maldives of Mexico” because of its stunningly clear, blue lagoon Bacalar is an incredible place to visit in Mexico. lso known as the Lake of Seven Colors, Laguna Bacalar is the second largest natural freshwater lake in Mexico and is known for its stunning blue and turquoise colors. This lagoon is perfect for swimming, kayaking, sailing, and paddleboarding.

Compared to more popular destinations like Cancun or Playa del Carmen, Bacalar is a quieter and less crowded place, which makes it an excellent location for a peaceful and relaxing getaway. Plus, it has a reputation for being eco-friendly with a focus on sustainable tourism. This approach has helped preserve the natural beauty of the area.

I’ve seen some stunning lakes in my time, but the bright blue waters of Bacalar Laguna knock every one of them out of the park. Bacalar is one laid-back place, so it’s nice to kick back and relax for a couple of days.

Don’t spend all your time chilling out and relaxing by the tranquil Laguna though, there are 16 square miles of lake to explore. Rent a kayak and explore the lake yourself. The water is nice and calm, ensuring the perfect conditions for kayaking. Also, take a speed boat tour and spend the morning exploring the cenotes around the lake.

27. Guanajuato

The first word that springs to mind when I think of Guanajuato is colorful.  If there’s one thing they do well in Guanajuato, it’s sprucing up their buildings with bright colors.  Located in central Mexico, Guanajuato is full of culture, history, and unique attractions. Guanajuato’s city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its beautifully preserved Spanish colonial architecture and cobblestone streets.

One of the unique features of Guanajuato is its subterranean network of tunnels, originally created for flood control, which now helps manage the city’s traffic. Walking through these tunnels is an adventure in itself and make sure to visit Alley of the Kiss (Callejón del Beso) a narrow alleyway famous for a tragic love story akin to Romeo and Juliet.

Guanajuato is conveniently located in the heart of Mexico, within easy reach of other notable destinations like San Miguel de Allende and Querétaro, and Mexico City.

28. Querétaro

Querétaro is a vibrant city located in the central part of Mexico. It is renowned for its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture and excellent wine. Querétaro is considered one of the best places to visit in Mexico because of its historic center which is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its beautifully preserved colonial architecture. The city’s baroque buildings and narrow cobblestone streets are among the most impressive in Mexico.

One of Querétaro’s most iconic landmarks is its massive aqueduct, built in the 18th century. It consists of 74 tall stone arches that stretch across a distance of 1.3 kilometers, offering a remarkable sight.

Querétaro is considered one of the safest cities in Mexico, which makes it an attractive destination for travelers. Plus, Querétaro’s central location makes it a convenient base for exploring other parts of central Mexico. It’s within easy reach of Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende, and Guanajuato.

29. Valladolid

There are a few places on the Yucatan Peninsula that I couldn’t possibly leave off this list. The town of Valladolid is beautiful.  There’s a central plaza overlooked by a stunning cathedral with plenty of bars and restaurants housed in pastel-colored buildings, serving up local specialties.

Having said that, the main reason Valladolid makes this list is down to the cenotes which you’ll discover around the outskirts.  Rent a bike and cycle to Cenote X’Keken and Samula. Take a dip in the refreshing waters of the limestone cave cenotes and marvel at the endless stalactites hanging down above you.

30. Isla Holbox

If you haven’t heard of Isla Holbox yet, where have you been? The popularity of this Mexican island has rocketed in the last few years and it’s easy to see why. People are flocking from all corners of the globe to Isla Holbox. At the moment, the island isn’t as developed as the likes of Isla Mujeres. However, who knows in the future?

The main draw of Isla Holbox is the opportunity to get up close and personal with whale sharks from June-September. As well as swimming with whale sharks visit the ecological reserve Yum Balam, kayak in the mangroves, go flamingo spotting, grab yourself a beer at a beach bar, or spend the day floating around in the crystal-clear waters.

Being the capital city of the Yucatan Peninsula and the cultural hub of Mexico, Merida is often hailed as one of the best places to visit in Mexico because of its cultural heritage. But it also has a warm and welcoming atmosphere, delicious local cuisine, and close proximity to significant archaeological sites.

The city is known for its colonial architecture, colorful streets, and historic landmarks, it is a city of beautiful. With art galleries and fine cuisine It’s also a gateway to some of the most important Mayan archaeological sites, such as Uxmal and Chichen Itza. It is close to the beautiful Yucatan Peninsula, with its cenotes (natural sinkholes), wildlife, and beautiful beaches. It’s a short drive from the city to Progreso, a port city known for its beach and seafront promenade.

Plus, Merida has a reputation for being one of the safest cities in Mexico, which makes it a comfortable and welcoming place for tourists. The locals are known for their friendliness and hospitality.

32. Guadalajara

Guadalajara is the second largest city in Mexico after Mexico City and the capital of the state of Jalisco. The city hosts the International Mariachi Festival annually, with performances, parades, and competitions.

Just outside Guadalajara is the town of Tequila, where the world-famous spirit is produced. You can take a tour of the tequila distilleries, see the blue agave fields, and learn about the process of making tequila. The city also has a thriving arts scene, with numerous galleries, street art, and local crafts.

The city also has and impressive architectural heritage, from the grand Guadalajara Cathedral and the Hospicio Cabañas (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) to the modernist buildings in the Colonia Americana neighborhood. Guadalajara is home to several beautiful parks, including the Guadalajara Zoo, one of the most important zoos in Latin America, and the Barranca de Huentitán, a stunning canyon on the outskirts of the city.

33. Acapulco

Acapulco is located on Mexico’s Pacific coast and is a renowned beach resort city that has long been a favorite destination for both domestic and international tourists. It is most famous for its golden sandy beaches. The city’s bay is lined with high-rise hotels and restaurants, and the beaches, such as Playa Condesa and Playa Icacos, are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports.

The city is known for its party atmosphere, with plenty of places to dance and enjoy music into the early hours of the morning. One of Acapulco’s most iconic attractions, the La Quebrada Cliff Divers are a group of professional divers who perform daring jumps from cliffs as high as 35 meters into the ocean below, a must-see spectacle for any visitor.

Located in the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve, El Cuyo offers excellent opportunities for wildlife spotting. The area is known for its flamingo colonies and is home to a wide variety of other bird species. Depending on the time of year, visitors may also witness the nesting of sea turtles or catch sight of dolphins in the sea.

As a small fishing village, El Cuyo provides a taste of authentic Mexican life that’s harder to find in more touristy destinations. Visitors can enjoy fresh seafood, interact with the friendly locals, and immerse themselves in the laid-back lifestyle.

35. Monterrey

Monterrey, located in northeastern Mexico, is the country’s third-largest city and one of its most important economic centers. 36. San Luis Potosí

San Luis Potosí, both a city and a state in central Mexico, played a crucial role in Mexico’s independence and revolution. As a result, it boasts numerous historical monuments, buildings, and museums that chronicle the country’s past.

Do you want to spend your days stretched on a beach in the Yucatán Peninsula or in idle relaxation sitting beside a pueblo plaza? Then again, why not both?

• Come for: a heady mix of traditional and experimental cuisine, ancient ruins, and a vibrant arts scene

4. Isla Holbox

This island off the coast of the Yucatan peni nsula feels as much Caribbean as it does Mexican, with a blend of car-free streets and the lilt of steel drums. Though admittedly less Robinson Crusoe–esque than it used to be thanks to an infusion of boutique resorts like Nomade Holbox and NÁAY Boutique Hotel Punta Coco, this remains a place for freshly caught and grilled seafood and beaches that seem to stretch on forever.

How to get to Isla Holbox

Fly into Cancun International Airport and take a two-hour taxi, or hop on an ADO bus up for a four-hour ride to Chiquila. From there, take the 15-minute ferry to Isla Holbox.

Puerto Vallarta is a vibrant mixture of visitors and locals, where bars, restaurants, and shops are unlikely to use U.S. dollars outside of tourist centers. The main airport in the state of Guanajuato is in Leon, about an hour’s drive from the city. It has a few direct flights from the USA, but travelers can get to the airport with direct flights from Tijuana, Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, and Monterrey.

Puebla has fostered a scene that is just as proud of its heritage and tradition (it’s said to have a church for every day of the year) as it is of its experimental restaurants, with eateries like Moyuelo and Áttico 303 fusing traditional Mexican ingredients with international techniques and recipes. The city’s kitchens and street carts offer temptations like mole (a dried chile sauce) in every shade, overstuffed bread roll sandwiches known as cemitas , and tacos arabes stuffed into fluffy lavash-style bread.

How to get to Puebla

Puebla has its own international airport with direct flights from Houston (IAH), but consider flying into Mexico City, which has ample connections. From the Benito Juarez airport, you can hop aboard an express bus and ride two hours to Puebla.

• Come for: Cabo beaches and fantastic dining without the overwhelming hum of tourists

Los Cabos consists of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, which are connected by a long stretch of resort-lined roads known as the Tourist Corridor. As Cabo San Lucas is the more visited of the two, San José del Cabo is where travelers go to escape the crowds. Those visiting San José del Cabo can experience a thriving farm-to-table scene thanks to organic farms Flora Farms, Tamarindos, and Acre Baja that double as outdoor restaurants.

San Jose del Cabo’s international airport is the gateway to Los Cabos. It has direct flights from most major U.S. hubs.

Mexico’s West Coast – 10 Pacific Destinations That Are Worth Visiting

I’m always looking for unique, adventurous and exotic travel destinations that are convenient for me to travel to from my home in Western Canada. Crossing the entire continent (and losing four or five hours due to the time change) isn’t always feasible when I’m looking for a short, sunny-weather getaway.  That’s why I’m so partial to Mexico’s west coast, a region I’ve visited again and again.

My introduction to Mexico’s west coast came in 2008, when I spent a semester studying abroad in Guadalajara, Mexico.  I only had classes four days a week, so I would spend every long weekend exploring the region, both inland and along the coast.  I fell in love with the landscapes, the people, the food and the weather, and once I returned to Canada I immediately set up an alert so I’d be notified when flights to the area went on sale.

Below, I’m highlighting ten of the best destinations on Mexico’s west coast.  Each has something unique to offer, and each caters to a different style of traveler.  I hope that you’ll see why I’ve fallen in love with this region, and I also hope that you’ll get a little bit of inspiration for your next trip!

1. Sayulita

Sayulita is one of the destinations on Mexico’s west coast that I have visited the most.  When I lived in Guadalajara I would often spend my long weekends in this pueblo magico.

Over the years, Sayulita has grown from a quaint fishing village into a bustling tourist destination with countless restaurants, bars, shops and vacation rentals.  The beach here is great for beginner surfers (it’s actually where I learned to surf!) and there are easy walks through the jungle to more remote stretches of sand.

2. San Pancho

On a recent trip to Mexico’s west coast I also spent some time in San Pancho, a small fishing village that reminds me of Sayulita fifteen years ago.  Just a little bit further down the coast, San Pancho has a main road with locally-owned restaurants, shops and hotels, which leads to the town’s pretty beach.

This is a great place for skilled surfers to catch a break, while luxury travelers will want to take in a polo match at the upscale La Patrona Polo & Equestrian Club, which is also home to a trendy new beach club.

3. Puerto Vallarta

Most travelers visiting Sayulita or San Pancho will arrive via Puerto Vallarta, and this major city is also worth a day or two (or more!).  The heart of the city is the historic Zona Romantica, where the best locally-owned hotels and guesthouses (not resorts) are surrounded by traditional Mexican restaurants and independent boutiques.

Other highlights of a visit to Puerto Vallarta include a stroll along the waterfront malecon , a visit to the colonial Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe church, and an evening out at the famous Rhythms of the Night open-air cabaret show, featuring musicians, acrobats, dancers and more (sort of like Cirque du Soleil).

4. Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas has recently become one of North America’s premiere resort destinations, thanks to properties like the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal (recently voted the #1 best resort in Mexico).

Cabo San Lucas is a great destination for adventure travelers, and for families with children. There are lots of organized excursions departing from the marina area, ranging from snorkeling with whale sharks in La Paz to cruising past the iconic Los Arcos rock formations at sunset.

While the marina promenade is beautiful, it’s also very touristic.  You can experience a more authentic side of Cabo San Lucas simply by walking ten minutes from the marina. Here, you’ll find  authentic  taquerias, bars and shops serving the local community and domestic travelers.

5. San Jose del Cabo

Cabo San Lucas’ little brother, San Jose del Cabo, is only thirty kilometers up the coast from Cabo San Lucas. However, the vibe in this town is completely different, with artisan boutiques and natural estuaries in place of the all-inclusive resorts and busy beach bars.

This is a destination for chilled, laid-back travelers who want do a little surfing, a little strolling and a little shopping.  A major highlight is the Thursday night art walk, where the inner city streets close to vehicle traffic and the galleries along the roads stay open late, welcoming pedestrian visitors.  Another highlight is Flora Farms, an organic farm, restaurant, spa and community hub where you can take a Mexican cooking class (I am partial to Friday’s salsa class) and then do some sunset yoga surrounded by fruit trees.

6. Mazatlan

Located in the state of Sinaloa, on Mexico’s west coast, Mazatlan has some of the country’s most affordable resorts and all-inclusive vacation packages .  It’s a popular party destination for domestic tourists, so if you want to drink tequila and dance to Latin music with locals, this could be your ideal destination.

When you’re not partying, Old Mazatlan has a charming historic center that is worth a visit.  After, you can hop on a local ferry to Isla de la Piedra (“Stone Island”), a peninsula with beaches and waterfront restaurants. And of course, spend a few minutes watching the cliff divers at El Clavadista (shown above), a 50-foot tower on the beach in the city center.

In early 2023 Mazatlan experienced a short period of drug cartel violence unlike anything it had seen recently, following the arrest of a major cartel leader. The incident appears to have been a one-off as of publication time (Summer 2023), but keep an eye on local safety precautions before and during your visit.

7. Acapulco

In the 1950s and 1960s, Acapulco was the hottest destination on Mexico’s Pacific Coast.  Stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra flocked to Acapulco to visit the seaside restaurants, tip their toes in the ocean water and stay in luxurious hotels.

Unfortunately, in the 2010s, Acapulco experienced an unprecedented wave of drug cartel violence. Reports on the current situation today vary: many Mexicans recommend that foreign tourists avoid Acapulco, while many foreign tourists report that they enjoyed their recent visits.  Consult your country’s government travel advisory site for current updates.

When it does become safe to visit Acapulco again, make sure to go see the La Quebrada Cliff Divers, who dive from heights of up to 135 feet into the waters below. Also visit Diego Rivera’s former studio, as well as the striking Exekatlkalli mosaic he designed for the wall of a local home.

2023 Update: In October, 2023, Acapulco was hit by a Category 5 hurricane – the worst to ever make landfall in Mexico. It will be a while before the tourist infrastructure recovers and I would recommend holding off on traveling to the city for now. Instead, consider donating to a registered non-profit organization like World Central Kitchen that will be aiding in the recovery efforts.

8. Ixtapa & Zihuatanejo

Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are as close together as Sayulita and San Pancho, yet these two beach towns on Mexico’s central Pacific Coast feel like they are worlds apart.

Ixtapa is definitely the more touristic of the two coastal towns. As you can see from the top photo, its beachfront is lined with high-rise hotels and vacation rentals.  Here, you’ll find activities like golf, fishing, boat tours and even scuba diving.  Ixtapa also has the more vibrant nightlife scene, with local bars playing live music until approximately midnight.

On the other hand, Zihuatanejo still retains a lot of the rugged charm from its early days as a quiet fishing village. The beaches here are ideal for swimming and snorkeling, and the nearby Aztlán Ecological Reserve is home to a diverse assortment of wildlife (keep your eyes peeled for crocodiles, armadillos and iguanas!).  Zihuantanejo has more independent boutique hotels than resorts, and many of the local restaurants, cafes and bars have “local” prices, rather than “tourist” prices.

9. Puerto Escondido

I visited Puerto Escondido when I was staying in nearby Zipolite (not a destination that I’d recommend, which is why it didn’t make the list).  Puerto Escondido is a surfing hotspot, making it ideal for adventurous travelers, backpackers, solo travelers and anyone looking to escape the ordinary.

There is a good selection of beaches in Puerto Escondido, ranging from sheltered coves that are good for swimming to open expanses of sand that attract not only huge waves, but also international surfing competitions (the biggest is usually held in November).  Puerto Escondido also has the best selection of hostels on Mexico’s west coast, with options ranging from the upscale Selina (don’t miss their mescal tasting) to the homey Casona Puerto Dreams .

As I mentioned, I visited Puerto Escondido while I was staying in Zipolite, a hippie hangout about 90 minutes down the coast.  This is  the place to visit for clothing-optional beach days in Mexico (not why I was there, I swear!).  From Puerto Escondido you also have easy access to Mazunte, a tiny town that is famous for its “natural whirlpools” and sunset views.  You could easily combine both in a day trip from Puerto Escondido if you’re looking for something even more off-the-beaten-path.

10. Huatulco

Huatulco is an up-and-coming tourist destination on Mexico’s west coast.  You’ll want to rent a car if you stay here, as many of the area’s best attractions around outside the historic town center of La Crucecita.

Huatulco is one of the few places on Mexico’s Pacific Coast where you can still find Zapotec and Mazatec ruins.   At the Copalita Eco-Archaeological Park you’ll find the ruins of an ancient civilization that abandoned the area more than 1000 years ago, leaving behind the stone remains of a temple, pyramid and ball court, as well as a waterfront “lighthouse”.

There aren’t just ruins in the park, however. Copalita Eco-Archaeological Park and the nearby Parque Nacional Huatulco have earned the region sustainability certification, and are now protected environments for many varieties of local flora and fauna.  In the winter, you may be able to see migrating whales passing by the shore, and year-round you can spot pelicans, deer and snakes (careful!).

Should you visit Mexico’s West Coast?

As you can see, Mexico’s west coast offers a diverse range of destinations ranging from upscale resorts to laidback fishing villages, and everything in between.  While you won’t find the turquoise waters and white-sand beaches that you’d find on the Yucatan Peninsula, you can still find unspoiled landscapes, authentic cultural experiences and yes, the occasional indulgence.

Personally, I never get tired of visiting this region and I’m always browsing for affordable flights to Pacific Mexico. If you’re flying from the west side of Canada or the USA, the short flight duration and the minimal time change means you can spend more time in your destination and less time en route.

The most important thing when you’re considering traveling to this area is that you need to know the type of trip you want to have, and understand which coastal cities and towns align with your expectations.  Don’t go to Cabo San Lucas if you’re looking for a budget beach holiday, and don’t go to Puerto Escondido if you’re looking for big-city vibes. All it takes is a little research and you should be able to find the perfect destination for your next Mexican getaway!

As you might have guessed, the best resort towns in Mexico are located in many of the best beach towns, such as Cancun, Los Cabos, and Tulum.

However, others are located off the beaten path in the not-so-famous places in Mexico.

This article contains a mix of both, so you’ll find the place you’re looking for. While the best resort in Mexico is subjective, by the end of this article, you will find your best place to go in Mexico — so let’s get to it.

At Playa Maroma, named one of the 10 Best Beaches in the World by the Travel Channel and Discovery Channel, you’re surrounded by natural beauty, peace and quiet.

This near-private beach is located in Punta Maroma, a Mexican beach town between Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

While this isn’t among the most popular Mexico resort towns, travelers in the know can’t get enough of Punta Maroma, Mexico.

It has great coral reefs for snorkeling just off-shore, especially those on the southern end of the beach, near the Chablé Maroma Resort .

San Jose, as it’s known by the locals, is easy to get to because the Los Cabo International Airport (code: SJD) is right in town.

Though it’s overshadowed by nearby Cabo San Lucas, the amazing  San Jose del Cabo resorts and the town itself have a completely different vibe.

Before continuing, let’s take a moment to clear up the Is it Cabo or Los Cabos? question.

I’ll admit it can be quite confusing because there’s Cab San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo and Los Cabos, so here’s the rundown:

Los Cabos is a geographic area in Baja California Sur state, of which the two top tourist towns are Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

When you see “Los Cabos,” it usually refers to the Los Cabos Corridor , which is the area between Cabo and San Jose.

While Cabo San Lucas is the most popular place in Los Cabos, many of the best resorts in Cabo are located closer to San Jose del Cabo and the Los Cabos Corridor.

4. Riviera Maya, Mexico

The Riviera Maya is a long stretch of Caribbean coastline on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, located in-between Playa del Carmen and Tulum .

5. Tulum, Mexico

It is known for its bohemian vibes, gorgeous coastline with crystal clear waters, posh beach clubs , stunning Tulum resorts and the Tulum Mayan Ruins archeological site.

Besides the Tulum Ruins, you’ll enjoy swimming in the  Tulum cenotes (freshwater sinkholes in the jungle). You can also go  snorkeling in Tulum and explore the surrounding area on some Tulum day trips .

6. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

25 Places to Visit in Moscow

Do you know what the most populous city in Europe is? Most people wouldn’t guess that it is actually Moscow. There are approximately 13 million people in the Moscow metro area, which amounts to approximately 1/10th of all Russians.

This former capitol of the Soviet Union is still the political and financial center of Russia. Just because it is a current business and government city, in no way means that it is boring and not worth a visit. Assuming the political tensions get solved, Moscow is a fascinating city you need to visit.

While lots of people can’t explain the nuances of Russian architecture, most can spot and appreciate it immediately. One of the best ways to see the historic sites is by taking a boat tour down the Moskva River that meanders through the city.

Overall, navigating the city isn’t difficult as there is phenomenal and cheap public transportation (roughly 30 rubles/35 cents per ride). You can also use a cheap Uber on the three ring roads that circle the city at various distances from the center.

The House with Animals

This former church is famous for the terracotta reliefs of animals that adorn the front of the building. It is a favorite of locals, and famous around the world. It was built in approximately 1900.

Resurrection Gate or Iberian Gate and Chapel

The Resurrection Gate is now one of the most common ways to enter Red Square. This gate is also the only standing part of the wall that was the entrance to to Kitai-Gorod, or Moscow’s historic central business district.

St. Basils Cathedral

Probably the most famous of the Red Square attractions is St. Basil’s Cathedral. I don’t know if the legend is true or not, but supposedly Tsar Ivan IV poked the eyes of the architect out after completing it so nothing as pretty could be made again. What an awful boss!

The State Historical Museum

If you are like me then you can’t help but find all the twists and turns of Russian history fascinating. The State Historical Museum at Red Square is a fantastic place to learn and study the Russian Relics.

This is one of the most unique things to do in Moscow. If you know that many American video games paint the Russians as the bad guys, then it’s probably not surprising to learn that you can find an entirely different variety of video games in Russia. This church attempts to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ as well as Russian military leader. Yes, it’s an awkward amalgamation. It caused quite a controversy when there were plans to create murals of Vladimir Putin and Joseph Stalin to go along with the ones of Jesus Christ (those plans were scrapped).

Bunker 42 (Cold War Museum)

Tunnel at Bunker-42, anti-nuclear underground facility built in 1956 as command post of strategic nuclear forces of Soviet Union.

Americans weren’t the only ones afraid during the Cold War! You can now discover the most secret and secure Bunker of the USSR, Bunker 42. Also known as the Cold War Museum . This former military communication center is now a museum. I recommend this tour that will take you on a private two hour visit of Bunker 42.

Tank Excursion and Bazooka Shooting in Moscow

For real – you can book this tour and actually ride in a tank and shoot off military grade weapons. While that’s not my cup of tea, I know tons of guys would absolutely love to shoot a bazooka!

Dormition Cathedral

This is another Russian Orthodox cathedral that is located inside the Moscow Kremlin. It is another famous landmark of Moscow. The inside is decorated with ancient frescoes.

The Cathedral of the icon of the Mother of God “Sign”

This cathedral is located in Zaryadye Park (adjacent to Red Square). It is also on the Moskva River. The Cathedral of the icon of the Mother of God “Sign” previously was a monastery.

Komsomolskaya Metro station 

So many of the metro stations are breathtaking works of art. The idea was to create something beautiful that all the regular people could enjoy, or if you are more cynical you could say it was to attempt to show off how well they were doing.

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Stree t

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Street look super cool and futuristic, except like many communist projects didn’t actually work that well. They were supposed to be something new and different from the standard “Soviet Blocks.”

There are a number of problems with this design. Supposedly the acoustics are awful making the apartments perpetually noisy. The inner circle becomes a wind chamber even when it’s not that windy. My favorite weakness is that the trapezoid shape of apartments is hard to decorate and even harder to do maintenance on.

Izmailovo District and Izmailovo Kremlin

This area has to be one of the coolest places to visit in Moscow. It features a park in the middle of Moscow that is over 3x the size of New York City’s Central Park. The Kremlin in Izmailovo is a complex located in the Eastern Administrative District of Moscow that is known as the center of culture and entertainment. The wooden buildings are in Russian architecture of the XVI-XVII centuries (not original).

Tretyakov Gallery

For those that appreciate fine art this is where you have to go. The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow Russia is the best collection of Russian fine art in the world. The museum previously hosted worldwide chess tournaments (I can’t help be think of the Queen’s Gambit).

Kolomenskoe Estate

This reconstruction of a former royal estate is just a few miles southeast of the Moscow city center. Supposedly really detailed historical plans survived, so the reconstruction and current museum is incredibly authentic. It was completed in 2010.

Old buildings of Arbat

Arbat is an old street, and was previously the “nicest place to live in Moscow. Even though it fell into disrepair, it’s location, it’s historical buildings, and the fact that it is a pedestrian street are quickly making it a top place to live again.

The Melnikov House

Located on Arbat street, the Famous house of architect Melnikov designed this house (and Lenin’s sarcophagus). Melnikov designed it at a time when private ownership was outlawed, but got around this restriction by saying it was an experimental design to maximize space. Even though others weren’t built, he was able to keep it.

The New Maiden Convent

The New Maiden Convent, built was built to resemble a mini-Kremlin. It stands out to me because this “convent” was the place where women who were no longer welcome in the royal court were banished to.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space at the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics in the Cosmopark

The Americans may have made it to the moon first, but the Russian cosmonauts were first in a number of other achievements. This gigantic obelisk pays homage to their accomplishments.

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve

This royal estate was founded by Catherine the Great. She was Russia’s longest serving female leader. It is now a gorgeous museum!

Stalinist Skyscraper tour

This group of seven skyscrapers are called the Seven Sisters. They were all made in the Stalinist style, and one was previously the tallest building in Europe. If you want to tour them all while learning about their history book here .

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

It’s ironic that a country that was so anti-religion for so long has so many great churches. The Cathedral for Christ the Savior was made to thank Jesus for saving Russia. Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

This church on Red Square is reconstruction of what was previously there but ordered to be destroy by Joseph Stalin. It is a travesty thinking of all the beautiful things that Stalin destroyed to attempt to implement his vision.

Zaryade Park

Zaryadye Park is one of the main tourist attractions in Moscow. It is located directly next to the Kremlin, and offers truly amazing views. It is also famous for its “floating bridge” and the fact that there are so many unique features underneath it.

Church of Sign of Blessed Virgin in Dubrovitsy Znamenskaya

The Church of the Theotokos of the Sign (Dubrovitsy), or The Church of the Holy Sign of the Mother of God is located in a village amed Dubrovitsy about 20 miles south of Moscow. It is another Russian Orthodox church, but what makes this one unique is that we aren’t 100% sure who made it, or why is has a style that is completely different than other churches of the time.

The Church of Nicholas The Wonderworker

I love the unique style of the Russian Orthodox churches in Moscow. The golden onion domes stand out across the globe. This church dates back to 1657, though it has been partially destroyed a few times since then.

Moscow University

Moscow University is one of the Seven Sisters that are the “Stalin Skyscrapers.” Previously it was the tallest building in Europe. Though it has lost that title, it is still the tallest “educational building” in the world.

9 Things to See in Moscow's Red Square

In most cases, you'll be entering Red Square from the north, passing landmarks such as the Bolshoi Theatre and Duma parliament building as you make your way southward. Although you don't necessarily have to pass through the Voskresensky (or Resurrection in English) Gates in order to gain access to the square these days, they definitely provide a sense of arrival, to say nothing of the way their left arch frame's St. Basil's Cathedral if you look from just the right angle.

An interesting fact is that while a gate of some kind has stood here since the mid-16th century, the one you currently see wasn't built until 1994, having been destroyed in 1931 so that tanks could enter and exit Red Square during military parades.

St. Basil's Cathedral

Few sights are as iconic not only of Moscow and Red Square but indeed of Russia than St. Basil's Cathedral, whose colorful, onion-shaped domes are a symbol of the country around the world. Officially known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, this church has stood since 1561, which is quite miraculous when you consider all the turbulent history that has transpired since then.

Among other things, religion was severely prohibited during the Soviet period , which led some to believe that this emblem of the Russian Orthodox church might not withstand the tenure of the USSR. 

An interesting fact is that St. Basil's is the so-called "Kilometer Zero" of Russia; all of Moscow's main roads (which can take you anywhere in Russia) begin at the exits to Red Square. In this way, St. Basil's iconic status also has an extremely tangible element.

The Kremlin

When you think of The Kremlin, it's unlikely that positive images enter your mind. The fact that simply saying the word "Kremlin" is too vague a descriptor (most Russian cities have their own Kremlin complexes; you should say "Moscow Kremlin") notwithstanding, this misunderstood place is incredibly beautiful, even if you don't like the policy that comes out of it.

Senate Square

In spite of its name, which refers to the role the building that rises above the square played during Imperial Russia, Senate Square is actually home to Russia's presidential administration, currently helmed by Vladimir Putin. In order to see where Russia's legislature operates from, walk just outside Red Square to the Duma parliament building.

Dormition Cathedral

Dating back to the year 1479, the gold-domed Dormition Cathedral pays homage to an Orthodox religious feast that commemorates the death of the Virgin Mary . As is the case with St. Basil's, it is curious that such a conspicuously religious structure was able to survive through the Soviet period.

Armoury Chamber

Though it takes its name from the fact that it housed Russia's royal arsenal when it was built in the 16th century, the most notable resident of the Kremlin's Armoury Chamber today is the Russian Diamond Fund.

The interior of the Moscow Kremlin is more beautiful and inviting than you'd expect, but the walls and towers that rise around it better live up to the intimidation with which the complex is associated. 

Borovitskaya Tower

Named to commemorate the dense forest that once stood atop the mount where it's built, this tower is extremely picturesque. Built in the late 15th century, it's visible from most places in the square, and also as you walk along the Moskva River.

Nikolskaya Tower

Also built in the year 1491, this tower currently suffered destruction at the hands of Napoleon's army in the 19th century. What you see now is the result of an 1816 re-design and renovation, though artillery fire during the Russian Revolution also caused superficial damage to the tower, named to honor St. Nikolas of Mozhaysk , so it's difficult to know which elements of it are original.

Spasskaya Tower

Known in English as the "Savior's Tower," this iconic, star-topped tower is perhaps the best-known of all the Kremlin's towers. Built in 1491 like the other two towers on this list, it's certainly the most photographed. As a result of its proximity to St. Basil's, it often makes its way into tourists' pictures.

Mausoleum of Lenin

Just as it's strange to learn how many religious monuments survived through the Soviet period, it's a bit odd to think that Lenin's preserved body still sits in a mausoleum just beneath the walls of the Kremlin on Red Square, given the lack of consensus about the ultimate impact of his Revolution, even in Russia.

It's not guaranteed that you'll be able to see the body (which, believe it or not, seems to be improving with age ) when you go, and if you do you will likely have to wait in line, but even strolling past the outside of the Lenin Mausoleum, flanked by stone-faced guards that almost look like statues, illuminates the gravity of his body still being here.

GUM Shopping Center

You might cringe, at least initially, when you realize that one of the most iconic stops on a tour of Red Square is a department store—until you see said department store, that is. Built in 1893 and known during Soviet times as the State Department Store, GUM  ( Glávnyj Universáľnyj Magazín​ or Main Universal Store in English) hearkens back to the grandeur of the late 19th century, both seen from the outside (especially, when lit up at night) and the interior, which might have you feeling like you're further west in Europe.

A trip inside GUM is a particularly good idea during winter, when frigid temperatures outside will have you savoring the heat, the quality of souvenirs, confections and other goods sold inside notwithstanding. Also, make sure not to confuse GUM with CDM, which sits near the Bolshoi Theatre, even though both are stunning and iconic in their own right.

State Historical Museum

The Russian State Historical Museum is located near Voskresensky Gates, though you should wait until after you've seen the first few attractions of Red Square and the Kremlin to head back there and go inside. To be sure, as you pass by its facade (whose late-19th century grandeur somewhat obscures that fact that it's currently a museum accessible to the public) you might not even think to try and gain entry.

Once inside the museum, you can plan to spend at least a couple of hours, given that artifacts here date back to the very beginning of the Russian state in the ninth century. As is the case with GUM, this will be a particularly alluring prospect if you visit in winter, when Moscow is arguably at its most beautiful, but certainly at its least tolerable. 

Minin-Pozharsky Monument

It's somewhat easy to disregard this monument, which pays homage to the two Russian princes who ended the so-called "Time of Troubles" in the mid-16th century, during which Polish-Lithuanian forces occupied Russia, among other awful things including a famine. That's because the statue currently sits just at the base of St. Basil's Cathedral, which makes it very difficult to photograph or even see without being overwhelmed by that much more famous edifice.

Though the statue originally sat at the very center of Red Square, it came to be an obstacle to the movement of tanks during the Soviet period, much like the Voskresensky Gates. As a result, authorities moved it during that time, and it's stayed where you currently find it ever since.

Kazan Cathedral

Taken by itself, the smokey-pink Kazan Cathedral is an architectural marvel; originally built in the 17th century, the church you find here today, located just north of the GUM department store, dates back only to 1993.

Unfortunately, since it sits not only in the shadow of GUM, but also in the shadow St. Basil's and the Towers of the Kremlin, it's easy to miss entirely if you aren't looking. As a result, you might wait until you've seen just about everything else in Red Square before coming here to take photos, and to appreciate the understated beauty of this oft-overlooked cathedral.

Moskva River

As you head south from St. Basil's Cathedral to exit Red Square, make sure to walk onto Bolshoy Moskvoretskiy Bridge, which crosses the Moskva River. If you look due north, you can get an excellent shot of the church framed, on the left, by the towers of the Kremlin. Directing your gaze a bit to the west allows you to see the skyscrapers of Moscow City as they rise above the Kremlin's walls.

Walking westward along the riverbank is also a worthwhile excursion, for the views it provides of Red Square and the Kremlin, as well as the fact that doing so takes you to other iconic Moscow attractions, including Gorky Park and the Pushkin Museum. The views you enjoy from the river and the bridge are particularly stunning at night, though you should make sure you bring a tripod if you want to get a clear picture, given how strong winds over and near the river can be.

Brisk, cool mornings give way to sun-warmed afternoons, and the dropping temperatures create a kaleidoscope of colors as the leaves change before winter sets in. The displays of color are different across the U.S., but they're all brilliant when leaf-peeping season is at its peak.

Peak leaf season varies by region and by year, depending on the weather, so it's best to check with local sources before you go. Many top destinations to view fall's splendor have leaf and foliage maps and trackers so you can follow the local predictions and current conditions – and arrive just in time for the best of the season. Some of these destinations will be familiar, while others are lesser-known locales where you can capture and embrace fall's beauty.

So, pack your jacket and jeans, then grab your camera to capture one of nature's best spectacle.

Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia National Park covers nearly 50,000 acres along the rocky coast of Maine. Located about 160 miles northeast of Portland, the park boasts the diverse natural beauty of the Atlantic shoreline, including majestic mountains. Peak leaf season in Acadia traditionally falls in the middle of October. This is when you'll see the vibrant displays of oranges, reds and yellows, especially along the Acadia All-American Road, one of the best scenic drives to view the fall colors.

While visiting Acadia , plan to stay at the nearby coastal town of Bar Harbor , considered to be the gateway to the park. Bar Harbor Inn & Spa , situated along picturesque Frenchman Bay, is an outstanding choice for an overnight stay: The historic property offers impressive views of the water as well as Maine's Porcupine Islands. The 34-mile McKenzie River Scenic Byway extends from the vineyards of the Willamette Valley to the forests of the Cascade Mountains in Oregon , treating travelers and road-trippers to views of some of the Pacific Northwest's most beautiful landscapes. Plan your visit for peak season when the golds and reds are most vibrant, usually in mid-to-late October.

The McKenzie River boasts some of the best fly-fishing in Oregon, so anglers will want to cast off for native redside rainbow and cutthroat trout along the way. Other highlights include stops at local farm stands and at Goodpasture Bridge in Vida, which is the state's second-longest covered bridge. The Berkshires, Massachusetts

Located in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania and bordered by New Jersey and the Delaware River to the east, Bucks County has a rich Revolutionary War history and is known for its thriving cultural and arts community. The yellows, oranges and reds are usually the most vivid from mid-October and later, with peak colors appearing at the end of the month. For active adventures in the colorful scenery, go hiking, biking or horseback riding. You can also hop on board a train ride into the forest on the French Lick Scenic Railway. When you want to kick back and relax, spend an afternoon sipping wine with a view on a Fall Foliage Wine Cruise on Patoka Lake.

There are three hotels to choose from at the historic French Lick Resort, including the newest property, the 71-room Valley Tower Hotel. A must-see no matter which property you choose is the stunning atrium at the West Baden Springs Hotel . Spanning 200 feet wide and constructed more than a century ago, this engineering feat was once known as the "Eighth Wonder of the World." While at the resort, you can enjoy all of the amenities, including three golf courses, two spas and a Vegas-style casino.

The Mississippi River Valley, Minnesota

Colorful wooded bluffs, steep hillsides and quaint river towns are all highlights of the Mississippi River Valley region in southern Minnesota – best enjoyed on a leisurely drive. The nearly 90-mile route from the town of Red Wing to La Crescent on U.S. Route 61 also features scenic overlooks, including two must-see locations at Great River Bluffs and Frontenac state parks. This drive along the Mississippi River – part of the 3,000-mile Great River Road, which begins in Minnesota and runs south through 10 states to conclude in Louisiana – celebrates peak fall colors from late September to mid-October.

As you take in the brilliant hues of russet, red and gold along the ride, be sure to stop for an afternoon snack at a roadside apple stand. Bird lovers may be eager to see the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Minnesota. While in this town, grab dinner and a beer before spending the night at Turning Waters Bed, Breakfast and Brewery. Further down the road, don't miss the town of Winona, home to the small but impressive collection of works that explore the human relationship with water at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum.

Breckenridge, Colorado

Situated at 9,600 feet above sea level in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Breckenridge is one of the first places in Colorado to witness fall's brilliant changing of the leaves. While the aspen trees' golds, reds and oranges usually peak by late September, the season can linger into early October. For optimal leaf viewing, plan to drive the 22-mile Boreas Pass: This route begins in Como and heads north to Breckenridge.

While visiting, enjoy brisk fall days hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding or fly-fishing surrounded by the beauty of the Rockies. If you're in town in mid-September, don your best alpine gear and attend the festivities at Breckenridge Oktoberfest. For an extended stay with a view, reserve accommodations at The Lodge at Breckenridge . Hudson, New York

Nestled in the Hudson River Valley in Columbia County, around 120 miles north of New York City , Hudson is a small town that offers a distinct food, arts and farming culture. Willamette Valley, Oregon

Fall is harvest season in the Willamette Valley and one of the best times to visit the renowned wine region. The days are sunny and cool during peak foliage, which typically falls around mid-October. Leaf peepers can expect to see brilliant hues of yellow, orange and red against the deep green shade of the evergreen Douglas fir – the state tree of Oregon. Willamette Valley is home to more than 700 wineries, with many producing internationally acclaimed vintages, so you may want to hire a private guide to craft your itinerary around the best wines and the best views.

McMinnville is situated in the heart of wine country and is a perfect base for exploring the region. Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

Set in the White Mountains of New Hampshire , Bretton Woods is one of the top destinations in the state to view fall foliage. Leaf-peeping season begins in mid-September and continues through late October – this is when the most vibrant yellows, oranges, reds and even purples will paint the surrounding mountains. Due to the many tree species, it can be hard to predict peak foliage in this area, but you'll likely have the most luck around the second week of October.

To enjoy the spectacle for several days, make reservations at the Omni Mount Washington Resort . This historic property sits at the base of the highest peak in the Northeast, giving guests a front-row seat to the show. Visitors can stop at dozens of unique sites featuring artisan jewelry, pottery, woodwork, glass pieces, sculpting, painting and more throughout the Northwoods.

Stop for a few days in Boulder Junction to see more of the area and take in some of the outdoor activities, such as hiking, biking, fishing, golfing, kayaking and more. Located in Vilas County, the charming town is home to hundreds of biking and hiking trails and nearly as many lakes. You'll also find cute local shops to peruse and casual restaurants downtown and on Main Street. Take your pick of rustic cabin-style accommodations and private rentals or reserve a room at one of the motor lodges in town: Boulder Bear or Boulder Junction.

Highlands, North Carolina

This picturesque mountain town sits at more than 4,100 feet in elevation on the Highlands Plateau in the Nantahala National Forest. Highlands is also located in a temperate rainforest, so the vegetation is lush and there are many waterfalls, rivers and lakes to explore in and around the area. Leaf-peeping season typically begins in mid-October, when you'll see leaves starting to turn bright yellow and orange, as well as deeper hues of red, rust and even purple.

There are many active outdoor activities to enjoy in this region, such as hiking, fly-fishing and golfing, but the community also has a vibrant cultural arts scene. During your visit, check out the exhibits at The Bascom (a visual arts center), as well as events at the Highlands Performing Arts Center and the new Mountain Theater Company. While in town, reserve accommodations at Old Edwards Inn and Spa . Whidbey Island, Washington

The 55-mile Whidbey Isle Scenic Way is one of the driving routes along Puget Sound in what's known as "Washington's ultimate road trip": the Cascade Loop. Peak color along the loop typically occurs between late September to mid-October with brilliant shades of gold, orange, and red – and you'll have plenty of opportunities for leaf peeping with all the farms, parks, mountains and wineries along the way. The scenic drive on Whidbey Island begins as you cross over historic Deception Pass Bridge and head south toward the largest town on the island, Oak Harbor. This coastal city is home to Deception Pass State Park and many Garry white oak trees that are native to the Pacific Coast.

In Coupeville, the second-oldest town in the state, more than 100 buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Stop for photos at Fort Casey State Park and the Admiralty Head Lighthouse before feasting on local Penn Cove mussels at one of the waterfront restaurants. Other highlights on the drive include Greenbank Farm, where you can sample local wines and cheeses surrounded by the Olympic Mountains and the Cascade Range, as well as the town of Langley, known as the "Village by the Sea." This charming artsy community sits atop a bluff overlooking the Saratoga Passage and the Cascade Mountains.

Letchworth State Park, New York

Letchworth State Park, fondly known as the "Grand Canyon of the East," is home to some of the most striking fall foliage views in the U.S. The park's 14,300-plus acres of lush forest usually hit their peak in early-to-mid-October, when leaf peepers will be treated to yellow, orange and red foliage framing the magnificent Genesee Gorge and Genesee River. Explore this unique setting on miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, including the park's new Autism Nature Trail, a milelong hiking loop with marked sensory stations. You can also take to the skies in a hot air balloon with Balloons Over Letchworth, the only company that launches from inside the gorge.

While you're visiting Letchworth State Park, be sure to check out the surrounding Wyoming and Livingston counties for fun fall activities. You can soak in the views in Wyoming County with a Fall Foliage Train Ride on the Arcade & Attica Railroad, or head to Livingston for a free ranger-led walking tour of the Mount Morris Dam. When you're ready to relax, explore local craft beer, wine, cider and spirits along the LivCo Libation Loop. Tunnel of Trees, Upper Peninsula of Michigan

Known as the Tunnel of Trees, this 20-mile scenic route follows the historic Michigan 119 highway between Harbor Springs and Cross Village. The area's canopies of golds, oranges, yellows and crimsons are on display typically from late September to mid-October. A few highlights for travelers include visiting the picturesque waterfront resort town of Harbor Springs and sampling authentic Polish cuisine at the iconic Legs Inn restaurant in Cross Village.

For overnight lodging, plan to stay at The Highlands, a Boyne Resort in Harbor Springs. This property offers many outdoor activities, including zip lining, horseback riding, biking and swimming. While here, reserve a seat on the Heather Express chairlift: This excursion to the top of the mountain affords incredible views of Little Traverse Bay, Harbor Springs and the area's beautiful fall foliage.

North Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada

North Lake Tahoe, which unfurls across both California and Nevada, is surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America, so there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure, from kayaking and paddleboarding to boating and relaxing on the area's many beaches. When it comes to viewing fall's splendor, hundreds of biking and hiking trails with 10-plus different species of native trees show off the red, orange and yellow foliage.

The best time to see the colorful leaves is from about mid-September to late October, especially at the top leaf-peeping locales: Tahoe Meadows, Ellis Peak, Mount Rose Summit and Sugar Pine Point State Park. For a memorable getaway, book accommodations at the Everline Resort & Spa at the base of Olympic Valley. The Ozarks, Arkansas

The transformation typically begins around the second week of October, and peak colors appear by late October. One of the top spots to view the foliage is in the Buffalo National River area around the small town of Ponca. This beautiful wilderness destination in the mountains offers the opportunity to disconnect and get away from it all.

While here, take time to hike or float down the river – all the while keeping an eye out for wild elk. Fall is when the bulls are battling to become king of the herd, so they're especially active during this time of year. Plan to reserve one of the cabins in the mountains above Ponca. Vantage points from these properties yield incredible stargazing opportunities, as well as memorable sunrise and sunset views.

Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byway, Maryland

The roughly 40-mile scenic drive from Emmitsburg to Point of Rocks runs along U.S. Route 15 in Maryland . Known as "hallowed ground" and considered sacred by some, this long stretch of road highlights significant Civil War sites and pristine natural areas, including Catoctin Mountain Park, home to the presidential residence Camp David. The best time to make the journey to view the foliage on the Maryland route is between late September and early November, with peak season around mid-October.

One not-to-be-missed detour is a stop to see the 78-foot waterfall and gorge in Cunningham Falls State Park. If you're after a challenging hike with great views, travelers say Sugarloaf Mountain in Dickerson can't be missed. Afterward, spend time exploring the shops, art galleries, distilleries, breweries and restaurants in the historic city of Frederick. You can book an overnight stay at one of the charming local B&Bs, such as 10 Clarke. If you're up for more fall festivities, visit nearby Gaver Farm in Mount Airy, whose Fall Fun Fest has a corn maze and more than 65 attractions, including a zip line, a chicken show, jumping pillows and giant slides.

Adirondacks, New York

The Adirondacks offer leaf peepers 10 distinct regional destinations covering more than 6 million acres in the northeast corner of New York state. Adventurers can head to the Lake Placid region in late September and early October to hike the Adirondack High Peaks, which offer the best mountain vistas during peak fall foliage. While you're in the region, be sure to visit the Olympic Jumping Complex. Visitors can take an elevator to the top of the ski jumps for a bird's-eye view of the Adirondacks before heading back down on a zip line.

In the first two weeks of October, you'll find peak leaf peeping around Lake George, a popular vacation spot with 109 miles of shoreline and 300-plus islands. Hike nearby Prospect Mountain for a breathtaking view overlooking the lake's beautiful blue waters and the vibrant yellows, oranges and reds of the surrounding forest. For an authentic Adirondack stay without sacrificing resort luxuries, book a vacation rental at The Lodges at Cresthaven. Anchorage to Kenai, Alaska

From Tern Lake to Skilak Lake on Sterling Highway, you won't want to miss the sight of the Kenai River's teal glacial waters set against the orange and yellow leaves.

For a side trip en route, visitors can plan to stay in one of the recently refreshed Signature Rooms at the beautiful Alyeska Resort, about 40 miles southeast of Anchorage. Indulge in a day at the Alyeska Nordic Spa and, if you visit by mid-September, take a ride on the aerial tramway to the top of Mount Alyeska for panoramic views from above. The Poconos, Pennsylvania

One of the best ways to view the Pocono Mountains' vibrant fall hues of reds, yellows, oranges and purples is with a scenic drive along U.S. Route 6 in Pennsylvania. This road meanders through charming towns like Milford, Hawley and Honesdale, where you can take in autumn festivities that include the Hawley Harvest Hoedown and Honesdale's Harvest and Heritage Days. Another optimal viewing spot for the foliage is the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area with its 70,000 acres of forests and wetlands, the two tallest waterfalls in the state, and more than 150 miles of hiking trails.

The peak season for vibrant leaves in the Poconos depends on the region (north or south) and the progression of temperatures in the fall, but you can typically expect the best viewing from mid-September through the peak season in early-to-mid-October. For up-to-the-minute information, check the fall foliage forecast on the Poconos Mountain website . After a busy day of exploring, The French Manor Inn and Spa is the perfect place to kick back, relax and admire even more of autumn's beauty. Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

Top leaf-peeping areas include the White Pass Scenic Byway to Chinook Pass via Bethel Ridge – if you have a high-clearance vehicle. Visitors may consider making a side trip to Cash Prairie before venturing on to Timberwolf Mountain. Peak season to capture the brilliant crimsons, ambers and golds can vary, but it typically occurs between mid-October through early November.

While in the park, enjoy other favorite fall activities such as foraging for local mushrooms – chanterelles, hen-of-the-woods and matsutake, for example. You can also book an early-morning Elk Bugling Tour at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park to see the Roosevelt elk sparring during their "rut," or breeding season. For rustic accommodations to enjoy the great outdoors while visiting the park, reserve a cabin or campsite at Mounthaven Resort.

North Conway, New Hampshire

For prime autumn foliage in one of the best small towns for an adventure, head up to North Conway in New Hampshire . Located roughly 85 miles north of Portsmouth, this small town is encompassed by the White Mountain National Forest and home to Mount Washington, the tallest peak in the Northeast. With dozens of foot hike options through the surrounding 700,000 acres of protected forest, there's no shortage of leaf-peeping opportunities. Peak colors typically paint the landscape with vibrant hues of red, orange and yellow from the end of September into the first two weeks of October.

A ride along the Kancamagus Highway – affectionately called "The Kanc" by locals – is a must-do. The 34-mile scenic drive will immerse you in a fall wonderland as it winds through the New Hampshire countryside, but make sure to fill your tank before you set off, as there are no gas stations or stores along the highway.

While you're in the area, don't forget to indulge in North Conway's other unique activities. Enjoy the perks of tax-free shopping at Settlers Green Outlet Village or grab a chairlift ride at Cranmore Mountain Resort. If you decide to hop aboard the historic Conway Scenic Railroad, experience 360-degree views of the fall foliage in a deluxe dome car on the 1950s-era transcontinental streamlined train. When you're ready to settle in for the night, the Cranmore Inn, a boutique inn located in the center of town, blends modern amenities with historical charm.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park encompasses more than 522,400 acres across the states of North Carolina and Tennessee. The Smokies are known for their incredible display of autumn hues with about 100 species of native trees. At 4,000 feet in elevation and above, leaf peepers can expect to see intense shades of red, orange and brown during peak season, which is typically around early-to-mid-October. Lower-elevation towns like Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg will experience peak color around mid-October to early November.

The highest summit in Great Smoky Mountains National Park , Clingmans Dome, sits at 6,643 feet and offers one of the best views of the foliage, with panoramic vistas from a 54-foot observation tower. The 11-mile one-way loop at Cades Cove (accessible from the nearby town of Townsend, Tennessee) is another top spot for seeing the colorful display in the park. This scenic valley features hiking trails, historic homesites, a visitor center, a campground, a riding stable and a picnic area.

Clingmans Dome and Cades Cove can be very busy with tourists in the fall, so another option is to take a drive on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, which is a round-trip scenic route from downtown Gatlinburg. You can also head out on one of the many hiking trails in the park to see Mother Nature's spectacle. If you're planning to stay a few days to explore the park and the nearby towns, make reservations at the Historic Rocky Waters Inn, A Small Luxury Hotel in Gatlinburg. Maps show Tropical Depression Debby's path and forecast

Debby  made landfall for a second time early Thursday as a tropical storm near Bulls Bay, South Carolina, the National Hurricane Center said. It weakened to a tropical depression later in the day and is forecast to move up the East Coast, spreading heavy rain and possible flooding through the mid-Atlantic and Northeast by the weekend.

Debby first made landfall as a  Category 1 hurricane  early Monday on Florida's Big Bend coast. As of 11 p.m. EDT Thursday, it had maximum sustained winds of 30 mph, the Miami-based hurricane center said. Debby's center was about 80 miles northeast of Charlotte, North Carolina, and some 90 miles northwest of Raleigh, North Carolina. It was moving north-northeast at 26 mph. 

The storm's generally sluggish pace means Debby has been lingering for a long time in places it passes over, making flooding risks high across the regions in its path.

As the storm heads toward the Northeast, meteorologists said, Debby would most likely converge with a frontal zone farther up the East Coast — essentially meaning it will cross over an atmospheric threshold and into a different air mass — and become an extratropical cyclone as it dumps rain on places as far north as upstate New York and Vermont.

Tropical cyclone  is an umbrella term that encompasses tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes, which differ based on their strength. An  extratropical cyclone  can be as weak as a tropical depression or as strong as a tropical storm, but unlike tropical cyclones, they are cold at the core and therefore can't quickly grow into a hurricane.

Storm surge forecast 

The map below, updated Thursday morning, showed the highest potential peak storm surge heights, including tides. Forecasters noted that the timing of peak surge and high tide in a given area, and whether they coincide or not, will ultimately determine how destructive the inundation will be.

Heavy rainfall totals dominate the forecast

The hurricane center said Thursday that Debby "is expected to produce an additional 3 to 6 inches of rainfall with locally higher amounts across portions of southeastern North Carolina, leading to maximum storm total amounts as high as 15 inches," the hurricane center said. "Additional rainfall of 1 to 3 inches over portions of eastern South Carolina will bring maximum storm total amounts as high as 20 to 25 inches. Considerable flooding is expected across portions of eastern South Carolina and southeast North Carolina through Friday."

"From central North Carolina northward across portions of Virginia, 3 to 7 inches with local amounts to 10 inches, are expected through Friday," forecasters said. "This rainfall will likely result in areas of considerable flash and urban flooding, with river flooding possible."

"From portions of Maryland north through Upstate New York and Vermont, 2 to 4 inches, with local amounts to 6 inches, are expected through Friday night," the hurricane center said. "This will likely result in areas of considerable flash and urban flooding as well as river flooding."

17. Tsaritsyno Palace

Once the summer residence of Catherine the Great, the stunning Tsaritsyno Palace is now a museum-reserve. The architecture is magnificent and there is a lovely park surrounding it for visitors to explore.

Located in the south of Moscow, the palace was commissioned in 1775 and recent renovations mean its lavish interior looks better than ever before with its elegant halls and beautiful staircases.

The exhibits on display look at the life of the empress as well as the history of Tsaritsyno itself. The huge palace grounds are also home to some other delightful buildings with the elegant opera house and wonderful brickwork of the Small Palace being particularly impressive to gaze upon.

Starting out in 1935 as the ‘All-Union Agricultural Exhibition’, VDNKh has slowly morphed over the years into the fascinating open-air museum of today. Remarkably, over 400 buildings can now be found within its confines.

The huge park complex has numerous pavilions representing former Soviet republics on show, such as those of Armenia and Turkmenistan and the distinctive architecture of each of the buildings is always interesting to gaze upon. In addition to this there is the fascinating Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics which is dedicated to space exploration and the fun Moskvarium aquarium even offers you the chance to swim with dolphins.

With lots of eateries scattered about and numerous entertainment options such as horse-riding and zip-lining, there is something for everyone to enjoy; the Friendship of Nations fountain truly is wonderful.

15. Kremlin Armoury

One of the oldest museums in the city, the Kremlin Armoury has a wealth of treasures; highlights include the ornate Grand Siberian Railway egg, the historic Cap of Monomakh and the stunning Imperial Crown of Russia which often has a crowd of tourists around it, jostling to take a photo.

Once the royal armory, there are loads of fascinating objects on display. Perusing the many sabers, jewelry, armor and more is as interesting as it is educational and entertaining and the swords are so finely crafted that you’ll almost wish you could pick up one and wield if yourself.

Established in 1851, the museum is situated in the Moscow Kremlin.

14. GUM Department Store

Standing for ‘Main Universal Store’ in Russian, GUM is stunning. Its wonderful skylights and beautiful facades mean it doesn’t look out of place alongside its illustrious neighbors on Red Square.

With over 200 shops, boutiques and upmarket eateries inside, it is a shopaholic’s heaven and concerned partners will be glad to find more affordable options alongside luxury brands such as Dior and Prada.

The main department store in the city, GUM was opened in 1893. The stunning architecture makes it well worth a visit even if shopping isn’t your thing.

13. Moscow Metro

It’s not often that public transport looks like a work of art. So many stops on the Moscow Metro will astound visitors with their beauty and elegance.

Decked in marble and with frescoes covering the walls, the stations are amazing to gaze upon and are part of one of the longest metro systems in the world, with the first stations opened in 1935.

11. Novodevichy Convent

Drenched in history, the Novodevichy Convent is located in a striking building that was once a fortress. This captivating place is well worth visiting when in Moscow.

Founded in 1524, the convent houses four cathedrals; Smolensk Cathedral is the undoubted highlight due to its delightful 16th-century frescoes.

Wandering around the grounds is like stepping back in time. The Novodevichy Cemetery is where many famous leaders of the Soviet Union are buried, such as Yeltsin and Khrushchev.

10. Pushkin Museum

Despite its name, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts actually has no connection at all to the famous poet other than that it was named in his honor after his death. A delight to visit, its extensive collection focuses on European art with masterpieces by Botticelli, Rembrandt, and van Gogh all featuring.

Sculptures, graphic art, paintings and more can be found in its beautiful galleries; various sections look at themes and epochs such as the Renaissance, the Dutch Golden Age, and Byzantine art.

Among the many highlights are the clownish characters which can be found in Cezanne’s Fastnacht (Mardi Gras) and the twirling ballerinas who look so elegant in Degas’ Blue Dancers. Picasso’s Young acrobat on a Ball is also well worth checking out for its interesting use of shapes and colors.

9. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This gorgeous Russian Orthodox cathedral is located on the banks of the Moskva River, just a stone’s throw away from the Kremlin.

The church as it stands today was consecrated in 2000, as the original church that stood here was destroyed on the command of Josef Stalin in 1931 due to the anti-religious campaign.

With its delightful golden dome, spires and dazzling white facades, the Christ the Savior Cathedral is stunning. The interior is just as captivating to wander around, with its beautifully tiled floors and impressive altar.

8. Lenin Mausoleum

Opened to the public in 1924, Lenin’s Mausoleum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Moscow. The red granite structure is located at the heart of the city in Red Square.

Lenin’s embalmed body lies in a glass sarcophagus; it is a somewhat eerie experience walking past the former leader of the Soviet Union but is well worth doing as you understandably can’t do it anywhere else in the world.

After visiting the mausoleum, head to the Kremlin wall right next to it for more graves of important communist figures such as Stalin and Brezhnev.

7. Tretyakov Gallery

Home to the most extensive and impressive collection of Russian fine art in the world, the State Tretyakov Gallery is definitely worth visiting when in Moscow for the wealth of amazing art pieces that it has on display.

Having started out as the private art collection of the Tretyakov brothers, there are now over 130,000 exhibits. Highlights include the iconic Theotokos of Vladimir which you will almost certainly recognise despite probably not knowing the name and Rublev’s Trinity which is considered to be one of highest achievements in Russian art.

An absolute must for art lovers, the State Tretyakov Gallery will delight visitors with all that is has to offer.

6. Kolomenskoye

Once a royal estate, Kolomenskoye is now a museum-reserve and lies a few kilometers outside of the city center. A captivating place to visit, there is a plethora of history on show and the site overlooks the Moskva River.

Consisting of four historical sites, there are extensive gardens for visitors to explore, as well as loads of interesting old buildings, the former village of Kolomenskoye itself and the impressive Palace of the Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich – once considered the Eighth Wonder of the World by contemporaries.

Among the many stunning sights, it is the brilliantly white Ascension Church that is the undoubted highlight – dating back to 1532.

5. Gorky Park

Lying alongside the Moskva River, the huge Gorky Park is a lovely place to visit. Its extensive gardens are home to numerous cultural institutions and visitors should definitely check out the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and while the eclectic exhibits may not always feature such incredible sights as a balloon-covered rider on a zebra; they certainly always succeed in pushing back the boundaries of art.

Pop-up exhibitions and festivals can be found from time to time in the park itself and there is an open-air theatre and numerous eateries alongside a plethora of leisure activities.

Whether it’s cycling, table tennis or yoga that you are after or beach volleyball and rowing, Gorky Park certainly has it. In winter, there is a huge ice rink for visitors to enjoy.

4. Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the main theater in the country. The amazing opera and ballet performances it has put on over the centuries go a long way in explaining Russia’s rich history of performing arts.

While the Bolshoi Ballet Company was established in 1776, the theater itself was opened in 1825. The glittering, six-tier auditorium is lavishly and decadently decorated; it is a fitting setting for the world-class performances that take place on its stage.

Spending a night watching a performance of such classics as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre is sure to be a memorable experience and the beauty all around you only adds to the sense of occasion.

3. Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.

Perseid meteor shower 2024 peaks this weekend. Here's how to see summer's best 'shooting stars'

Find a spot with a wide-open sky view and no late-night lights nearby, lie back and get comfortable.

Every August, just when many people go vacationing in the country where skies are dark, the best-known meteor shower makes its appearance: The Perseids.

This year, the Perseid meteor shower should reach its peak during the overnight hours of late Sunday night into early Monday morning (Aug. 11-12), when there is almost no moon, making the late-night sky nice and dark for shooting star spectators and counters. The first quarter moon sets around 11:20 p.m. local daylight time, leaving the sky nicely dark thereafter. Some Perseids do appear during the evening, but the shower is always better from about 11 p.m. or midnight until the dawn's early light. 

Or, to put it another way, expect greater numbers of meteors to be evident during the pre-dawn hours because this is when your side of Earth turns to face the oncoming meteors more directly.

The first livestream will begin at 9 p.m. EDT on Aug. 11 (0100 GMT on Aug. 12,) and the second will begin at 9 p.m. EDT on Aug. 12 (0100 GMT on Aug. 13.), weather permitting.

Where to look

During those after-midnight hours the shower's radiant point (the point from which it appears to originate), located between the Perseus constellation and the 'W' of Cassiopeia , will be getting progressively higher in the northeast — so meteors should flash across all parts of the sky at a rate of about one every minute or two (as seen by a single observer). 

That, anyway, is the prediction if your sky is good and dark. But even if you live under moderate light pollution, as unfortunately, most of us do, you can catch at least the brightest of the Perseids. They have often been described in astronomy journals as including "many bright and fragmenting meteors" that leave persistent trains in their wake.

Earth should go through the thickest part of this "old faithful" of meteor showers for many hours centered around 1400 UTC on Aug. 12, which is 10 a.m. on that date Eastern Daylight Time, which is during the daytime across all of North America. So, for meteor watchers here, the night before and perhaps even after could be equally good. Fortunately, the Perseids stay active — about one-quarter their peak strength — for several days before and a day or two after their peak, and an occasional one may be seen almost anytime during the month of August. 

A Perseid is one whose path, if traced backward across the sky, intersects a spot between the constellations Perseus and Cassiopeia. Other "sporadic" meteors traveling in random directions occur once every 5 or 10 minutes. Two much weaker showers are also active at this time of the year , the Delta Aquarids and Kappa Cygnids.

Lay back, relax, and wait

You'll need no experience to watch the Perseids. Just find a spot with a wide-open sky view and no late-night lights nearby. Bundle up warmly (it can sometimes get chilly even on summer nights), lie back on a ground pad or in a sleeping bag or even better, on a reclining lawn chair, and watch the stars. Also cover exposed parts of your body with mosquito repellent so you won't get bit.

Be patient, and give your eyes sufficient time to dark adapt. The direction to watch is not necessarily toward Perseus but wherever your sky is darkest, probably straight up. 

The Perseids are the ionization trails made by little bits of debris from comet 109/P Swift-Tuttle , streaking into Earth's upper atmosphere at 37 miles (60 km) per second. The Perseids were especially dramatic in the early-to-mid 1990s surrounding the year of Swift-Tuttle's most recent return (in December 1992). Since then, however, they've reverted to normal. The comet isn't due back until August in the year 2126.

Startling occurrences

But surprises can always happen.

On the morning of Aug. 14, 2021, the Perseids displayed an unexpected outburst of meteors between 06:00 and 09:00 UT (2 to 5 a.m. EDT). The cause of this outburst is currently unknown but is probably the result of an unknown filament of comet debris produced by Swift-Tuttle as it raced through the inner solar system many centuries ago. 

In an announcement on Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Circular #5016 , the maximum zenithal hourly rate was estimated to be somewhere between 130 and 210, plus or minus 20. Amazing numbers considering that rates are normally 50% lower each preceding night after maximum but these rates are two to three times more than was seen during the expected maximum on the night of Aug. 12-13, 2021.

Four years from now "might" bring a truly amazing Perseid display, as some meteor experts are predicting that Earth will interact with a thick knot or clump of meteoric material shed by comet Swift-Tuttle during the 15th century, that possibly could produce a short-lived display of many hundreds of meteors per hour. 

Defying predictions

Sometimes, even in years that are deemed favorable for Perseid viewing, sky watchers report seeing only a half or a third as many meteors that were predicted — and yet others report up to twice as many! It has been suggested that the stream of Perseid particles, strung out along its orbit around the sun, has a complex filamentary structure with gaps and rich spots. 

Complicating the situation is the fact that some people's eyes seem better suited for meteor work than others.

Regardless of your local viewing circumstances, each year the appearance of the Perseids give many people a reason to head outside and gaze upward at the night sky. Even if you see only a few "shooting stars," all it takes is catching sight of one outstandingly bright meteor to make the viewing experience worthwhile. 

A final incentive is to note that next year the moon will be at a waning gibbous phase only a few days past full and will flood the sky with bright light, squelching all but the brightest Perseid streaks. So, take advantage of the favorable conditions provided to us this year.
