CWI and ECB announce expanded England Men's Tour of West Indies in 2022
ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) today announced the scheduled match dates for England’s next tour of the Caribbean in 2022. It represents an expanded schedule to the original International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Future Tours Programme (FTP).
The January 2022 Tour will now feature five T20 Internationals (T20Is) – increased from three matches – to be followed by England returning to the Caribbean for three Test matches in March – increased from the original two Test matches.
The Test series will be the first in which the two teams compete for the newly commissioned “Richards-Botham Trophy,” named in honour of West Indies’ batting icon Sir Vivian Richards and England’s great all-rounder Lord Botham. The new trophy pays tribute to the two legends whose rivalry and friendship embodies the close relationship and mutual respect between the two sides.
The T20I Series will be the biggest Series to date between the two teams in the shortest form of the game and will be part of the preparations building up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia in October 2022.
Ricky Skerritt, CWI President said: .
“This expansion of next year’s England tour to the Caribbean is welcomed news for West Indies Cricket and for the region’s tourism economy. It has come about because of the special relationship that has been developed between our respective boards and we are looking forward to working with ECB Chair Ian Watmore, and CEO Tom Harrison, to expand our partnership even further into new areas of cooperation and support. We have already begun discussions on how the ECB can help us in our development programs and I am pleased that ECB has been showing so much appetite and goodwill to assist.”
Johnny Grave CWI CEO said:
“We are delighted that the ECB have agreed to increase the number of matches in their tour to Caribbean next year. An England Tour to the West Indies is a special event, so by adding a third Test match and two T20Is to the original schedule it will enable more fans to watch the teams do battle and afford more of our countries the opportunity to host matches.”
Ian Watmore, Chair, England and Wales Cricket Board said:
"We hugely appreciated the support of Cricket West Indies, and all its men’s and women’s players, in helping us host a full season of international cricket in the summer of 2020. Following the conclusion of those tours to England we have been in discussions with CWI to understand how we can best support them moving forward and one way was to extend our existing England men’s tours to the Caribbean in 2022.”
Tom Harrison, Chief Executive Officer, England and Wales Cricket Board said:
"A tour to the Caribbean is one of the most iconic for both England players and fans alike. So, we are delighted to confirm that our England men’s team will play two additional IT20s and one more Test Match as part of their planned tours in January and March respectively. “The three Test Match series will form part of the next ICC World Test Championship, whilst the additional IT20s will provide our England men’s team with valuable preparation ahead of the ICC World T20, which takes place in Australia later that year."
The venues for the matches are expected to be announce in June 2021. For the latest ticket information click HERE , and sign up for the WI Insider Fanmail to get the very latest news and fixture information delivered directly to your email inbox as soon as it's released by clicking HERE .
West Indies and England restarted the international cricket schedule following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic when West Indies toured England in July 2020. The teams played a three-match ICC World Test Championship Series in a bio-secure bubble at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton and Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester.

England cricket fixtures: Manic 2022-23 schedule shows why Test and ODI teams are set up to fail
England are set to play an unprecedented 54 matches across all formats in just 11 months and the scale of this job is deterring the best coaching candidates and wearing out the players.
One look at England’s fixture list for the next 11 months tells you exactly why Rob Key, the new director of men’s cricket , has split the head coach role between Test and white-ball cricket.
Official confirmation of that decision came on Tuesday, when the separate jobs for red and white-ball coaches were advertised by the England & Wales Cricket Board.
With a closing date for applications of 6 May – and interviews to take place after that – England face a race against time to fill the roles before the start of the international summer on 2 June.
But the manic nature of England’s schedule between then and the end of March next year may well put off some of the best candidates.
More from Cricket
Ricky Ponting , Mahela Jayawardene and Ottis Gibson have already ruled themselves out of the running to become the new Test coach. Justin Langer, too, is also now out of the picture.
Simon Katich and Gary Kirsten have been sounded out by Key , but there must be a danger that they too may be put off by the volume of cricket England face in the coming months.
The international schedule has long been a bug bear of England’s players and coaches – with 40 matches across all formats in the year just gone. Indeed, nobody plays more cricket than England.
Yet the number of matches between June and the end of March 2023 is unprecedented even for them. Having already played five Test matches and five T20 internationals this year, the long-form and white-ball teams will play a combined 54 matches in 10 months, with that rising to 57 if England make the final of this autumn’s Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.
England cricket fixtures 2022-23 England have already played five Tests this year (two in Australia and three in the West Indies) as well as five Twenty20 internationals in the Caribbean. In the next 11 months they face at least another 54 games (57 if they make the T20 World Cup final) in just 11 months. June 2-27: Three Tests v New Zealand 17-22: Three ODIs in Netherlands July 1-5: Test v India 7-10: Three T20s v India 12-17: Three ODIs v India 19-24: Three ODIs v South Africa 27-31: Three T20s v South Africa August 17-21: First Test v South Africa 25-29: Second Test v South Africa September 8-12: Third Test v South Africa Seven T20s in Pakistan (dates tbc) October-November Three T20s in Australia T20 World Cup in Australia (five games minimum for England, seven if they make final). November-December Three ODIs in Australia Three Tests in Pakistan (dates tbc) February 2023 Two Tests in New Zealand (dates tbc) Three ODIs in South Africa (dates tbc) March 2023 Three ODIs and three T20s in Bangladesh
In comparison, India and Australia are expected to play 43 and 39 matches respectively in the same period.
Several Test and white-ball series clash, too, making the decision to have separate coaches a necessity, while there’s a responsibility on Key to protect the all-format players. That will surely see experimental or development squads used for several of the white-ball series, starting with the three ODIs in the Netherlands in June.
There may be a T20 World Cup in the autumn but England’s priority right now is Test cricket, so the likes of Ben Stokes , Jonny Bairstow and Mark Wood must only be made available to the white-ball set-up in the lead up to that World Cup that starts in Australia in October.
That is unlikely to make the job of white-ball coach, already expected to be a largely hands-off role given the authority of captain Eoin Morgan, attractive to many high-quality external candidates. It makes sense then to hand that job to Paul Collingwood, somebody already within the set-up and who was interim head coach for the Test and white-ball tours of the West Indies at the start of this year.
It is Test cricket that will occupy most of Key’s mind for the time being, with the appointment of a world-class coach the absolute priority if England are to arrest an alarming slump that has put them bottom of the World Test Championship table.
Attempting to revive England’s fortunes may well be a tempting challenge to many.
Yet even with separate head coaches, the relentless schedule may put off many high-quality candidates.
Despite having just 12 Tests in 10 months, whoever is appointed the red-ball coach will probably have to spend around six months away from home between the start of the summer and the end of February.
That’s some commitment and one that many coaches simply do not need to make given there are so many plum jobs available in franchise cricket that pay equivalent wages – or in some cases better – than what England will be offering.
No wonder Chris Silverwood, England’s last head coach, was sacked. Being asked to be responsible for teams across all formats as well as selection meant Silverwood was set up to fail.
Put simply, England need to play less cricket. Doing that may hit the ECB financially but it will surely improve results as well as players’ mental and physical wellbeing.

Schedule, venues confirmed for England WTC25 tour of New Zealand
New Zealand Cricket have announced dates and locations for the England Test series, beginning in late November.
Hagley Oval in Christchurch, the Basin Reserve in Wellington, and Seddon Park in Hamilton will host New Zealand's three Tests, all part of the ongoing 2023-2025 World Test Championship.
New Zealand Cricket chief executive Scott Weenink says the early announcement of England's Test tour comes after a surge in popularity in the long format, where seven of the eight days of the two Tests against Australia earlier this year were sold out.
“In the past, there’s often been a lot of talk in New Zealand about the popularity of Test cricket - without that translating into ticket sales or viewership numbers,” he said.
“The difference over the past summer, and in terms of the upcoming Tests against England, is that the interest is being converted to bums on seats and is driving record viewership numbers.
“We’re looking forward to that continuing over the upcoming summer, and to welcoming the England team and their fans to the Tests, and of course all the Kiwi-based supporters as well.”
Winners of the first World Test Championship cycle in 2021, New Zealand sit in third on the 2023-2025 table, having collected 50% of possible points in their campaign thus far. The Black Caps claimed maximum points in their home series against South Africa and collected a win in their away two-match series with Bangladesh, before falling to a 2-0 series defeat to current defending World Test Champions Australia.
World Test Championship standings
Both Australia and Sri Lanka women’s teams, alongside the Sri Lanka and Pakistan men’s teams, will also be touring in the 2024/2025 summer.
The remainder of New Zealand's home international schedule will be announced later in the year.
