How to exchange money at BRS:

You’ll have a few options for exchanging money at Bristol Airport, including:

  • Over-the-Counter Service: exchange money on the spot by visiting a currency exchange location and paying in cash or with a card for your foreign currency. This is a fast and convenient choice if the exchange office has the currency you need in stock - but can also be pretty expensive thanks to high fees and hiked up exchange rates.
  • Online Pre-Order: some providers, such as CXI, allow customers to order their foreign currency online for airport collection. This can mean you get a better exchange rate compared to an on the spot exchange, and means you’re guaranteed the exchange office will have the currency needed.
  • ATMs: a final option is to use an ATM to withdraw cash in the local currency in your destination, on arrival at the airport. ATMs are commonly available and can offer a fair exchange rate. However, you’ll need to make sure your own card issuer doesn’t impose high fees on foreign currency transactions and withdrawals, to make sure you get a good deal in the end.

Understanding Exchange Rates and Costs at BRS

When you exchange money, the amount of foreign currency you get in the end is determined by the exchange rate you’re offered, minus any fees you have to pay.

Exchange rates can be tricky as they move around all the time depending on changes in global markets. However, the rate to look out for is the mid-market exchange rate, which is the one you’ll see on Google and with a currency converter tool . Finding a provider which uses this rate - or as close as possible to it - will usually mean you get the best available deal.

Multi-currency cards vs airport exchanges

Unfortunately - and particularly at airport exchange offices - you’ll find very often that the exchange rate you’re quoted in the end is quite different to the mid-market rate for your currency. That’s because the exchange service has added an extra percentage fee to the rate used for conversion. This pushes up the overall cost to you, and also makes it very different to work out what you’re really paying for exchange.

Here’s a quick comparison between the Wise multi-currency card and one of the popular exchange services widely available at airports, ( Travellex ), you might consider to show you how fees and rates can make a difference to the amount of money you’d get in the end.

*Data taken from wise.com and Travelex , 9th of May 2024

Aside from fees added into the exchange rate you may also run into a couple of other costs, such as an exchange fee or delivery fee if you’re ordering online. These fees can be called commission or administration charges - but they’re usually pretty easy to spot when you arrange your currency exchange.

What’s the best way to exchange money at Bristol Airport?

If you need to exchange money quickly right before you travel, exchanging cash at the airport might be an appealing option. However, airport exchange rates aren’t usually the best option out there, which can mean that your exchange costs more at the airport compared to using other methods. Here are a few alternatives you might want to look into:

Multi-currency cards: A multi-currency card from a provider like Wise or Revolut allows you to hold foreign currencies in a digital account and then tap to pay with a physical or virtual card. You’ll also be able to make local currency ATM withdrawals when you need cash. Different card providers have their own limits for spending and withdrawals - for Wise US card holders you can withdraw up to 1,000 USD a day for example, while Revolut limits withdrawals to the equivalent of 3,000 GBP daily

Travel cards: Travel cards have been designed to allow customers to load popular foreign currencies to spend and withdraw later. They can function in a similar way to a multi-currency card, but usually have more limited features and support fewer currencies. Some providers let you collect a travel card instantly in person so you can start spending right away

ATMs: Getting cash from an ATM when you arrive at your destination can be a good option as long as your own card doesn’t have high fees for overseas use. It’s also helpful to know that some ATM networks have high fixed fees for withdrawals, which can mean you spend more than you need to in the end

Tips and tools to save your money

Let’s look at a few smart ideas to help you make your money go further when you travel.

Plan ahead : Planning your travel money ahead of time gives you more options, and can mean you end up with more in your wallet in the end. Don’t be pressured into exchanging at the airport at the last moment - planning in advance means you can get a multi-currency card or travel card to make life easier and cheaper.

Compare exchange rates : Every exchange service sets their own exchange rate. This means it’s crucial to compare the different rates available so you can find the best deal for your specific needs. You can get the mid-market exchange rate for your currency with a simple Google search, and look for a provider which offers this rate - or as close as possible to it.

Watch out for fees : A few different fees might apply when you exchange foreign currency, including commission, an exchange charge, and delivery costs if you opt to collect your money at a convenient location close to home or in the airport.

Use multi-currency accounts or travel cards : Providers like Wise and Revolut let you hold dozens of foreign currencies - often with low or no ongoing fees. You can add a balance in the currency you need and spend freely. If you don’t spend all the money you had loaded onto your account you can leave it for next time you travel, withdraw to your bank, or spend it at home.

Should you exchange foreign currency after your travels at Bristol Airport?

It’s not usually a great idea to exchange money at airports as the exchange rates available can be less favourable than those you’d get in a city exchange where competition drives the cost down.

Limitations and restrictions on exchanging cash and taking it abroad

Although there are no limitations on how much money you can take abroad or bring into the United Kingdom, if you plan to take over £10,000 in any form of currency, including traveler's checks, money orders, and negotiable instruments, it will most likely have to be disclosed to the UK Customs . This is because of global laws to counter funding of terrorism, and to make sure that any money being moved around the world is from a legitimate source.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that if you’re planning to exchange larger amounts of money at the airport it’s a good idea to call the exchange service in advance to make sure they have enough money at hand. Not all exchange desks stock all currencies, and the cash they keep in stock can be somewhat limited - a quick phone call can be all you need for peace of mind and to save hassle when you arrive at the airport.

Security tips for carrying cash at airports

As with anywhere, you’ll need to be very careful if you’re carrying cash with you as you pass through Bristol Airport. Travelers are often targets for petty thieves because they’re distracted and in an unfamiliar place - keeping your wits about you is essential to make sure you’re not a victim. Here are a few pointers:

Use airport lockers: Some airports offer lockers where travellers can securely store cash and other valuables. Using these may mean you need to pay a small fee, but can offer reassurance if you’re in the airport for an extended layover.

Travel insurance: Ensure your travel insurance policy includes coverage for theft of cash to recover some losses in case of an incident. Remember, if you’re the victim of crime, you’ll need to make a police report as soon as possible to make an insurance claim

Split the amount: Spread your cash among several secure places on your person and in your carry-on luggage to minimize potential losses. Do not include cash or valuables in hold luggage.

Use a money belt: A money belt worn under clothing is a safer alternative to a wallet, which can be easily targeted by pickpockets.

So, while you do have options for currency exchange at BRS, the exchange rates and fees on offer at the airport aren’t always the best available. A little advance planning can mean your money goes further in the end. Consider opening a multi-currency account or ordering a travel card which can help you get a better exchange rate, and offers flexible spending and withdrawal with low overall costs.

Nearly 30 passengers missed a Ryanair flight from Bristol Airport to Barcelona after they claimed the gate number did not appear on the information boards until the final call. By the time the passengers got to gate 13, they said they were told that it was too late to board.

They then had to wait as their bags were taken off the flight and have had to find new flights or cancel their plans. An investigation has now been launched at the airport to find out what happened. A spokesperson for the airport said that while the "message did appear later than normal due to an error" there was still 25 minutes to get to the flight.

Laura Stewart, from Caerphilly , was due to fly on the 7.30am flight from Bristol to Barcelona on Thursday morning for a long weekend break, said they were refused permission to board when she got to the gate. For the latest Welsh news delivered to your inbox sign up to our newsletter

The 46-year-old said: "Ryanair refused 26 people to board their flight. Despite us all explaining that the gate number was not shown on the boards until very late with a final boarding message. The gate was gate 13 which takes a while to get to. They closed the door at 07:10 despite people still queuing the other side to access the boarding area."

Another passenger, Fiona Emery, was travelling with her husband and two daughters. They arrived at the airport two hours before the flight and were watching the announcement board. She said: "The Barcelona flight and the boarding time wasn't displayed on the announcement board until the final call for the flight. It popped up two minutes before the gate closed.

"Once we arrived at gate 13, we were turned away as 'there were too many people to process onto the flight' and were told to wait by the door. Approximately 30 people were stood outside this gate and we were all told to leave and book another flight as 'we should've planned our time better and watched the notice board'. We were all sent to gate 2 and passed around by many different staff members who were trying to figure out what had gone wrong."

Bristol Airport

She added: "Further investigation had revealed the the information for our flight only stayed up for 30 seconds before disappearing off of the board, which staff admitted to it being the airport's fault. They also informed us that gate 13 had been closed 15 minutes earlier due to the amount of queuing caused by everyone arriving around the same time, but still managed to delay the plane so they could get all the luggage of people who missed the flight off of the aircraft. The plane was still on the runway when we were getting escorted out!"

She was angry about the "lack of customer service" and said they were treated as if missing the flight was their fault. Fiona said: "My family and I have missed our flight and now I'm paying travel expenses to get to another airport in east midlands as well as a hotel for the night, and am unsure if we will get any compensation to cover these costs. Luckily, after many hours of waiting and talking with Ryanair staff, we were able to get our flight transferred to East Midlands on Friday morning. However, we have lost out on our transfers from the airport to our hotel and our new flight has separated my family into random seats which is upsetting after previously paying an extra charge on our original flight to sit together."

A spokesperson from Bristol Airport said: "We apologise to passengers whose travel plans were disrupted today. The final boarding message did appear later than normal due to an error. When the boarding information was correctly displayed, customers still had 25 minutes to make their way to the gate. The majority of customers arrived at the gate on time and boarded the flight.

“We’re investigating with our partners Ryanair and Swissport to understand how this happened and are firmly committed to working with them to provide the best possible service to all of our customers.”

Ryanair said screen displays were the responsibility of the airport and not the airline but a spokesperson said: "Due to an error with the flight display screens at Bristol Airport, a small number of passengers missed this flight from Bristol to Barcelona (22 Aug). Should these passengers have presented at the boarding gate before it closed, they would have boarded this flight from Bristol to Barcelona alongside the other 160 passengers who did present at the gate on time. This flight from Bristol (22 Aug) departed for Barcelona at 7:58 local time.”

Bristol Airport has been praised by Bath’s MP as jet-setters head off on their summer holidays. Wera Hobhouse, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for energy and climate change and MP for Bath, visited Bristol Airport to see how they cope with the up to 40,000 travellers who pass through the airport every day in peak summertime.

Airport CEO Dave Lees and his operations team gave Wera a guided tour of the airport, mingling with passengers as they went through the new screening facility, which simplifies security checks, speeding up the process.

Passing through a bustling duty free area, and grabbing a Mediterranean Vegetable Medley for lunch at The Cabin, one of Bristol’s eight airside restaurants, Wera then enjoyed the highlight of her tour - stepping out of the departure lounge and on to the tarmac.

This section of her visit started with a drive around the apron of the airfield to hear how the teams humanely manage the birdlife in the area to discourage habitation. With bird strikes remaining one of the greatest risks to aviation safety, this is a crucial activity.

Wera then got to drive behind a plane, chasing it down the runway - from a safe distance - as it took off. “It was amazing - I felt like I was in an action movie," said Wera afterwards. A trip up the airport’s control tower, newly refurbished at a cost of £4m - completed Wera’s visit.

Bristol Airport is the primary gateway for the South West of England and South Wales, serving more destinations and passengers than all other airports in these regions combined, 117 currently). It aims to continue to increase the breadth of destinations in the future including some destinations beyond Europe into the Middle East and the US.

As the Lib Dems spokesperson for climate change, energy and transport, Wera was interested to hear about Bristol Airport’s sustainability strategy and decarbonisation goals. An ambitious new sustainability strategy was unveiled in December 2023, with four key goals; to achieve net zero operations by 2030, to support zero emissions flight development, to enhance the local environment, and to support the community, and Wera learned more about these during her visit from CEO Dave Lees, head of sustainability Hannah Pollard and head of planning and growth Andrew Goodchild.

They told her about the airport’s commitment to investment in improving access to public transport, encouraging the use of electric vehicles, and enhancing cycling and walking routes to the airport.

Currently only 16% of travellers use public transport to get to the airport. It is hoped that a new transport interchange, currently under development and expected to open in 2025, will lead to easier, and therefore increased, public transport access to the terminal and result in far greater numbers using more sustainable ways of getting to the airport.

The airport also has onsite recycling targets, aiming for 65% this year, and owns Lulsgate Wood, 11 acres of adjacent woodland. It has a range of management and enhancement measures in place to support biodiversity, including the protection of horseshoe bats.

In the Lib Dem press release from Wera her office states: “The airport inspects air quality continuously using real-time monitors. The results are reported every year in the Annual Monitoring report. And the Airport’s 2024-2029 Noise Action Plan sets out how it will manage the noise arising from airport operations, including measures such as phasing out mobile diesel generators through fixed electric ground power units and mitigation measures during construction works, such as controls on hours of work.

“Significantly, the airport is working on the development of the airport’s hydrogen infrastructure with the aim of enabling commercial flights by 2035. As a founding member of the Hydrogen South West consortium and the only airport a part of the Hydrogen In Aviation (HIA) alliance, Bristol Airport is at the forefront of advancing hydrogen flight development. The HIA, featuring companies like Airbus and easyJet, released recommendations in March to accelerate hydrogen flight development.”

David Lees, CEO of Bristol Airport, said: “We are proud to lead the way in sustainable aviation and are committed to achieving our net zero operations target by 2030. Our initiatives, from improving public transport links to pioneering hydrogen technology, are designed to reduce our environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future for aviation. It was a pleasure to showcase our efforts to Wera and discuss how we can continue to innovate in this critical area.”

Wera Hobhouse, Liberal Democrat MP for Bath, praised their commitment to sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint: “As we face the urgent challenge of climate change, it is crucial that the aviation industry takes a leading and responsible role in encouraging greener travel. I am pleased to learn of the initiatives being pursued here at Bristol Airport to prioritise decarbonisation to reach net zero by 2030 and enhance the surrounding environment. I urge all airports across the country to adopt similar sustainable strategies and solutions. In the meantime I wish everyone travelling this summer safe, happy and restorative holidays, wherever their destination.”

Bristol Airport on Welsh Government plans to give £200m-plus to Cardiff Airport

The Welsh Government said the planned subsidy backing for the airport will support its growth over the next decade

Bristol Airport has responded to plans from the Welsh Government to provide more than £200m of grant funding to Cardiff Airport to support its growth over the next decade.

The Cardiff Bay administration, which acquired the Rhoose-based airport from Spanish firm Abertis in a £52m deal back in 2013, said the financial backing would support efforts to attract new airlines and routes with the aim of passenger numbers exceeding two million annually over the next ten years.

It would also support its strategy of diversification as the airport seeks to drive non terminal related revenues in areas like aviation training, sustainable aviation fuel, cargo and maintenance repair and overall - areas where Bristol is not a significant player. Any investment would be on a case by case basis with a focus on grant support leveraging private sector investment.

The growing gulf on passenger numbers between the two airports is exemplified by 2023 figures which show Bristol handled 9.8 million passengers - its busiest year on record - compared to just over 841,000 at Cardiff. Welsh passengers accounted for around 20% of Bristol's total with 1.96 million.

However, any grant funding could potentially see a legal challenge from a rival airport, such as Bristol, under the UK’s new post EU subsidy regime.

The Welsh Government is submitting details of its proposed investment package for the airport to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). In a written statement Cabinet Secretary with responsibility for transport, Ken Stakes, said: “This referral will take place over the summer recess period and will take three to four months to conclude. Once cabinet secretaries have had an opportunity to consider the CMA’s report and then taken a final decision on what form any investment package should take, they will report back to the Senedd.”

The evaluation by the CMA, through its subsidy advice unit (SAU), will be a non binding advisory report - judging the assessment made by Welsh Government of its subsidy backing being compliant with the Subsidy Control Act 2022. However, while neither a pass or fail evaluation – or an assessment of the likelihood of legal challenge - it will identify any shortcomings in the assessment or evidence base. It may also highlight positive aspects.

At the SAU’s discretion the report may also include advice about how the assessment might be improved, and/or advice about how the proposed subsidy may be modified to ensure compliance. The SAU is not a regulator of the subsidy control regime, so it is the responsibility of public authorities to ensure that they are complying with the legislation. If there is any subsequent legal challenge it would be considered by Competitions Appeals Tribunal.

Asked whether it could potentially lodge a legal challenge to Welsh Government subsidy support for Cardiff Airport, a spokesman for the airport said: “Bristol Airport is proud to welcome customers from South Wales every year, providing opportunities to reach over 115 destinations using our extensive range of airlines, including low cost and holiday operators. The airport has and continues to invest in improving the customer experience, including work under way on a major £400m investment to improve facilities for customers over the next five years at no cost to the tax payer.

“As the fourth largest regional airport in the UK, and the largest in the west of the UK, the airport employs more than 4,000 people, including providing many jobs for people in South Wales, while also helping to significantly support the Welsh economy without the need of any state financial contribution.

“We are aware of the Welsh Government’s further substantial £206m state subsidy proposal for Cardiff Airport, and we expect to be formally notified by the Competition and Markets Authority, given Bristol Airport’s close proximity, positive economic impact and existing service provision for many customers from South Wales.”

Cardiff Airport is aiming to get to its pre-pandemic annualised passenger number of 1.6 million by 2026.

Since acquiring the airport, including the acquisition price tag, the Welsh Government has provided investment into the airport of more than £170m.

On the future ownership structure of the airport, Mr Skates said: “Looking towards the longer term, the Welsh Government is open to exploring different ownership models for the airport, potentially including arrangements with the private sector or other public sector partners. We are open-minded about how the airport is owned in the future, as long as we can be confident that it is maximising its potential as a means to achieve sustainable economic growth and reduce inequality in the South Wales region.

“In the medium term, however, we hope to see this significant investment ensuring that the airport will deliver on the opportunities only it can, both for our people and our economy.”

Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister Natasha Asghar said: "The Welsh Government must look again at how to diversify the income streams of the airport if we are to see any real positive change in the years to come.

" If they cannot succeed in growing the airport’s revenue then they must look to the private sector as an answer, or the ever growing money pit will continue to swallow more Welsh taxpayers’ cash and has become incredibly hard to justify."
