Booking Activities

Some of these suggested activities can be booked through Carnival or you can go out on your own. It’s entirely up to you. If you want extra peace of mind then go through Carnival .

Here’s the reasons why:

-  Carnival compares all the available activities and choose the best operators.

-  Price match guarantee

-  If the tour runs late, the ship won’t leave without you

-  Easily  search the Carnival website by price range, activity type, duration and minimum age.

Activities By Port

We covered a wide range of activities and attractions that will match anyone’s budget – ranging from just a few dollars to several hundred. The great thing about each port is there’s always something fun to do. Or if you don’t want to step off the ship you don’t have to. The buffet on Lido deck or Bacchus dining room is only an elevator ride away. Hmmmm… tough choices!

Price guide (USD):

$ - Less than $50

$$ - $50 to $100

$$$ - $100 to $200

$$$$ - $200+

Maui (Kahului)

1. Take a road trip ($) - Hire a car at Kahului airport (book on RentalCars.com ) - prices are as little as US$30 for the day (plus gas). Take the Hana Highway east (towards Hana) and enjoy one of the best scenic drives in Hawaii. Even if you only make it half way (like we did), it will still be worth the trip.

A few recommended stops: Ho'okipa Beach (surfing lookout), Twin Falls farm stand (delicious banana & pineapple smoothie), Halfway to Hana (home of the “original” banana bread), Haipuna'ena Falls (go for a swim), Huelo Lookout (beautiful views & a fruit stand).

2. Old Lahaina Luau ($$$) – Since you’ve already got the rental car, drive to the west side of the island for an unforgettable night of roasted pork (cooked in a traditional underground oven), spellbinding sunset views, fun hula lessons, traditional crafts, delicious buffet, and a world-class show. If you’ve never been to a luau before, you’ll be in for a treat!

Oahu (Honolulu)

3. Scuba diving ($$$) – We took to Hawaii’s warm water with Kaimana Divers . After earning our diving certificates in Mexico , this was our first open-sea dive “on our own”. The instructor and captain were friendly and very helpful, ensuring we remembered all the important safety procedures. Free drinks were provided on board. We enjoyed 2 dives in locations known as “Nautilus” and “Horseshoe Bend”. If you have kids over 10, help them get up close to amazing reefs and sea creatures. Or you can leave younger kids playing happily in Camp Ocean (kids club) on the cruise ship.

4. Shopping (free, unless you pull out your wallet) – take a taxi to Ala Moana Center , the world's largest open-air shopping centre with more than 340 shops and restaurants. Most days there is free live music and hula dancing performances. Check out their website for details and times.

Kauai (Nawiliwili)

5. Kalapaki Beach (free) – Catch the free shuttle bus from the cruise ship terminal to the nearby beach precinct. Stroll through a few small shops and restaurants and then relax on the sandy beach or splash amongst the waves.

6. Shuttle to Kmart (free) – Ok, so this is a bit strange for a shore activity in Hawaii, but I’ll be honest… we wanted to stock up on snacks! And the shuttle was free. Tip: while you’re not allowed to bring drinks on board the cruise ship, food snacks are perfectly fine.

If you manage to get off the ship at a reasonable time (unlike us) take the time to explore the beautiful Wailua Falls (either via rental car or a tour – a 16-minute drive). Kauai is definitely one island I have to visit again!

Big Island (Kona)

7. Atlantis Submarine Tour ($$$) – Dive! Dive! Dive! See a different side of Kona… 100 feet below the surface. This 45-minute journey ventured into the deep blue where we were greeted with hundreds of fish and haunted shipwrecks. Our kids loved the laminated picture guide to help identify fish whilst the humours guide delivered laughs all round. Tip: Get 1 child under 13 free with a paying adult.

8. Shaved ice (few dollars) – Nothing says “Hawaii” more than shaved ice. We grabbed a rainbow-coloured ice treat and smoothie at Ali’i Buzz Natural Café . Yum!

Big Island (Hilo)

9. Helicopter tour over volcano ($$$$) - If you’re going to splash out on any 1 shore excursion on this Hawaiian cruise, this is it. It’s not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s an experience that stands out as one of the best I’ve had in my life (and I’ve explored over 70 countries!). We caught a taxi to airport (about US$17) and checked in with the tour operator. The open-door helicopter soared 100 feet above Hawaii’s most active volcano, Kilauea. I could feel the heat radiating from the otherworldly landscape below. And the pinnacle of the tour was flying over the lava flow at Kamokuna. Read my full article for more details . Tip: Try to score a free “car rental” return shuttle from the airport to the cruise terminal harbour.

Mexico (Ensenada)

10. Walking around town (almost free) – We caught the shuttle to the city centre (cost only a few dollars each, return trip). We strolled the main street admiring the numerous pharmacies selling discount-priced Viagra and other medication, as well as local handcrafts and souvenirs. You can’t go to Baja California without eating fish tacos, so we grabbed drinks and tacos at Papas&Beer . Tip: if you’re not good with directions, drop a pin in Google Maps on your phone at the bus depot, so you can easily get back later.

11. Sea lions near ship (free) – If most of your vacation spending money is gone by this point in the cruise, don’t despair. Just join the honking sea lions near the cruise ship terminal. You can’t miss them since they’re so loud. Tip: Don’t get too close to the sea lions... your awesome selfie won’t be worth it if you end up in a Mexican hospital.

12. Queen Mary ($) – Just because the Hawaiian cruise has finished, doesn’t mean your fun is over. The majestic (and now stationary) Queen Mary cruise ship is just a few minutes’ walk from the Carnival terminal in Long Beach. Take a tour around the historic ship or check out one of the special events held throughout the head. While we were there, the winter-inspired “Chill” event was on.

The Bottom Line

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2025 and 2026

Donna Heiderstadt

Cruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is, in many ways, an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

best hawaii excursions for cruises

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian Islands over seven days, with overnights at Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the Big Island. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (think: a race track, virtual reality gaming and waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's OK because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant and, at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse , Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go : This itinerary is ideal for anyone seeking a convenient way to island hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — as it makes the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

best hawaii excursions for cruises

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or Hawaii Island, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai, plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a paina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to all-terrain-vehicle adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Maui's humpback whale season is typically from mid-January to March. If your cruise falls within that time frame, you might catch sight of them while cruising off the coast of Maui. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island via a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast, among other activities.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer, the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or water sports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying about who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go : The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

best hawaii excursions for cruises

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. The itinerary is offered in 2025 and 2026 on 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 2,106-passenger Nieuw Amsterdam.

Cruisers who book these sailings must love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego to Honolulu and back requires 10 days. In between, passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the Big Island. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Both ships also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports will be required.

Travelers with more time can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. In 2025, Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary that combines visits to four Hawaiian Islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati, plus 20 sea days. Nieuw Amsterdam will sail that same itinerary in 2026.

Related: Holland America unveils another epic cruise — this time with a twist

Even longer itineraries are available aboard Zaandam. Choose between 51- and 56-night Tales of the South Pacific sailings that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia, along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock) — and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go : Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and enjoy a more traditional cruise experience will appreciate this itinerary. They should also love sea days as much as (or even more than) port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 16-night Hawaiian Islands

best hawaii excursions for cruises

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Vancouver, British Columbia, in fall and winter.

The sailings take place aboard 3,080-passenger Ruby Princess (from San Francisco), 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess (from Los Angeles), and 1,970-passenger Coral Princess (from Vancouver).

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours when visiting Hawaii Island (Hilo), Kauai and Maui; they stay for 16 hours during Oahu port calls. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required, plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues , including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up some sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go : These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruise

best hawaii excursions for cruises

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line only offers two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii Island), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy these ships' chic, grown-up ambience and amenities. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine. Passengers aboard Celebrity Edge can enjoy the international Eden Restaurant and Fine Cut Steakhouse, among its many dining options.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go : The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially those in their 40s and 50s who are part of Generation X and within Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

best hawaii excursions for cruises

If a good time is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach, California) aboard 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other round trips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend four days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii Island. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, such as Guy's Burger Joint , Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express .

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, the Alchemy Bar and the WaterWorks aqua park. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go : Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities will likely enjoy this itinerary.

Royal Caribbean's 8-night Hawaii Cruise

best hawaii excursions for cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too, on Royal Caribbean 's 4,905-passenger Quantum of the Seas.

The sailing is a one-way cruise from Oahu to Vancouver just before the Alaska cruise season (late April). The itinerary includes a stop in Kona and a scenic cruise along the Napali Coast before the ship crosses the Pacific. Since this itinerary ends in Vancouver, passports are required.

Quantum of the Seas features a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

The ship also offers 20 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland restaurant, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House. Bar options include Schooner Bar for piano tunes by request, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment ranges from live cover bands in the Music Hall to multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go : This itinerary is for cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Also, fares for this sailing start from $826 per person (based on double occupancy) for an inside cabin, making it an affordable cruise option, though you'll want to tack on a few nights in a hotel to see more of Hawaii.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

best hawaii excursions for cruises

Looking for a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting? Upscale cruise line Viking will offer round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. You can book additional excursions at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii Island (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and, like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast, include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also sail a 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia voyage round-trip from Los Angeles in early 2025, visiting four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go : Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 on board, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture should consider this itinerary. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.

The best Hawaiian island excursions on NCL Pride of America and other Hawaii cruises

best hawaii excursions for cruises

Cruises are a great way to see many Hawaiian islands in a short period of time. With so many options and such little time in each port, it’s a daunting process to choose what you will see and do.

When each Hawaiian island offers so much to see and do for a week-long land vacation , how do you best spend your limited hours at each port? The options can be overwhelming! We’ve gone on many land vacations in Hawaii and we’ve taken the NCL Pride of America cruise of Hawaii , so we know Hawaii very, very well. As such, we’d like to share some thoughts and suggestions on the top tours to do in each port.

With our suggestions, we’ve aimed our focus on the places considered to be must-see . Along with outstanding scenery, we’ve also included some recommendations for learning about the culture.

As the Pride of America cruise of Hawaii is quite popular, we’ll roughly follow their itinerary as we look at each port. Note that this cruise is the only one that continuously cruises within the Hawaiian islands. Every Saturday afternoon, it sets sail from Honolulu. Within a week, the Pride of America goes to Maui, Hawaii (Big) Island, Kauai, and then returns to Honolulu for disembarkation on Saturday morning. See the following image for that itinerary.

best hawaii excursions for cruises

If you are not taking the Pride of America’s cruise of Hawaii and are visiting from another ship, please verify that our suggested tours and activities align with the time constraints of your cruise ship’s itinerary.

One more point regarding time and tours, don’t try to be overly ambitious with the tours you choose that are outside of what the cruise ship offers. If your tour runs late, you might risk missing the ship, and getting back to the ship will be at your own expense. A good way to eliminate this risk is to build in a time buffer and/or book your excursions through the cruise company.

Best tours and excursions to take from Kahului, Maui

Maui day one suggestions.

The road to Hana is one of Maui’s top attractions. This rainforest drive offers lush, tropical scenery, a black beach, waterfalls and beautiful coastal views. (One caution – if you are prone to carsickness, prepare with your preventative measures or skip this tour.)  Though we’ve taken the road to Hana many times before, when we cruised Hawaii on the Pride of America , we chose a guided tour.

best hawaii excursions for cruises

Most excursions offered through the cruise ships only go to Hana and turn around, but there’s much to see beyond Hana. We opted for a tour with Valley Isle Excursions , which took us well beyond Hana in a long loop back to Kahului.

The reason we chose the road to Hana for day one of our two-day stop at Maui is that this tour takes all day. If, for some reason, your tour gets delayed, you won’t miss the boat if you have an overnight stay in port. Note that if your cruise only has one day for Maui, you might have to opt for the tours that go to Hana and back due to time constraints.

If you prefer to DIY, it is possible to rent a car and drive the road to Hana. You’ll want to do a lot of research first to make sure you use your time wisely. See our advice for the road to Hana . Note that we have a mini-guide to the road to Hana that allows you to see some awesome sights but doesn’t go to Hana and doesn’t take the entire day.

Alternatives for Day One on Maui

If the road to Hana doesn’t appeal to you, consider other tour options provided by the ship or rent a car and sightsee on your own. Look for an organized or DIY tour that might include the following options:

  • Historic Lahaina is a neat town to walk around, check out the shops, see their large banyan tree, and have lunch.
  • If it’s humpback whale season in Hawaii , which runs roughly from December-ish to April-ish, consider going on a whale-watching tour. Maui is one of the best islands for humpback whale watching.
  • The Iao Valley is a fascinating place to see, so if you can, squeeze that in on either day one or two. It only takes about an average of 30 minutes to see this valley, so it can be combined with other sightseeing.
  • Maui and Hawaii (Big) Island are our favorite islands for snorkeling. The crescent-shaped crater of Molokini is a top spot for snorkeling in Hawaii. Look for a tour that includes “turtle town” which may give you an opportunity to see honu (Hawaiian sea turtles.)
  • We really like the  luau options on Maui , so if your ship has an overnight stay on Maui, the evening of day one would be a very good evening to enjoy a luau.

Maui Day Two Suggestions

Seeing sunrise from 10,000 feet above sea level on a dormant volcano is quite a unique experience. Haleakala sunrise is one of the top activities for Maui. If your ship stays overnight on Maui, day two would be your only option for seeing sunrise from Haleakala.

If you toured the road to Hana on day one, check out the other suggestions we listed above under “Alternatives for Day One on Maui”

Best tours and excursions to take from Hawaii (Big) Island – Hilo Side

One of the most fascinating attractions in all of Hawaii is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park . It’s a park that is worthy of exploring for more than just a day, but as you’ll likely only have a day here, you’ll get to see some of the park’s highlights. Don’t miss it, especially if you have the opportunity to see volcanic activity.

best hawaii excursions for cruises

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is about a 50-minute drive from Hilo. So, you’ll need a tour or rent a car. The ship will offer tours, but if you want to consider an independent operation, we had a great tour with Keikana Tours’ Hoppa On Hoppa Off .

Best tours and excursions to take from Hawaii (Big) Island – Kona Side

From the Kona side, our number one pick would be seeing Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park . It’s often referred to as the Place of Refuge. This park offers an opportunity to learn about ancient Hawaiian culture with a stunning oceanside backdrop. At the moment, we’re not seeing a tour to this park being offered by NCL, so you’d have to rent a car or get a private tour guide to get here. It’s about a 40-minute drive from where the tenders drop off passengers. If you opt to see this place of refuge, you will also be able to make time to tour a coffee farm for which Kona is famous. We’ve enjoyed visits to Greenwell Farms . If you still have time available, visit Kaloko Honokohau National Historical Park

Pu'uhonua O Hanaunau

Alternative ideas for Hawaii (Big) Island, Kona :

  • If you did not snorkel on Maui or would like to do so again, Kealakekua Bay is a great place to snorkel. You’ll need a tour to get there.
  • The Kohala waterfalls tour is an excellent waterfall tour. Plus, the drive to and from north Kohala offers you the chance to see more of the island.  I’m not certain, but I believe the Kohala waterfall tour offered by the cruise companies is this same one .
  • Walk around Kona to check out the historic sites, shops and restaurants.

Best tours and excursions from Nawiliwili/Lihue, Kauai

Kauai day one suggestions.

Choosing what to do on Kauai seems to be a bigger challenge than the other islands. There’s so much to see and do! Here are our thoughts for day one:

– Our number one suggestion would be to rent a car. This would give you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Years ago, we wrote this article — I only have one day on Kauai. What should I see? It’s still good advice as you’d get to see the Kalalau Valley Lookout , Waimea Canyon , Spouting Horn and two of Kauai’s most iconic waterfalls — Opaeka’a and Wailua Falls . Those are all must-see places in Kauai, in our opinion. If you are on the NCL Pride of America cruise, you should have plenty of time to see all of this on the first day of your stop at Kauai, which includes an overnight stay.

Kalalau Valley

If you don’t want to rent a car, look for a guided tour that includes some of the sites just mentioned.

Alternative ideas for Kauai day one :

– Kauai is a spectacular island for a helicopter tour. See this link to review Kauai helicopter tour companies and read reviews .

– A Kauai movie sites tour takes you to some beautiful spots where movies have been filmed in Kauai.

– For some fun, we love the Mountain Tubing Adventure . See our review . (If you do this on day two, get the first morning tour in order to allow enough time to get back to the ship before departure.)

– Another one of our favorite tours is the Kauai Secret/Sacred Falls Kayak and Waterfall Hike .

Other notes about Day One on Kauai

If you are on the Pride of America , this is the port where the ship has arranged the option to go on a luau. They advertise it a lot. We have not been on to this luau, so we cannot speak from experience, but the feedback we heard from a handful of other passengers is that they were slightly disappointed. Our favorite luaus are on Maui and Oahu. See Maui luau options and Oahu luau options .

Kauai Day Two Suggestions

If you are on the Pride of America , this is a short day as you are only in port until 2pm. So taking tours could be tricky on this day. Here are some thoughts:

– Kalapaki Beach is a nice beach and just a short (approximately 0.5 miles) walk or shuttle ride from the cruise terminal.

– Consider a helicopter tour, as we mentioned above. Kauai is our favorite island for a helicopter tour. Most tours only take an hour and the airport is only about five minutes away from the cruise terminal.

– As we mentioned above, for some fun, we love the Mountain Tubing Adventure . See our review . You would need to get their first tour at 9am to make this feasible for day two of your stop in Kauai. Double-check the timing as that can be subject to change.

best hawaii excursions for cruises

If you are on the Pride of America, the ship will make its way around Kauai to cruise by Kauai’s stunning Na Pali Coast. You will have some time, probably a couple of hours, from when you leave the dock to when you can see the Na Pali Coast. Check with guest relations for their estimated timing for that day. You will definitely want to take in those views.

Best tours and excursions from Honolulu, Oahu

We hope you’ve allowed at least an extra day or two to explore Oahu either on the front end or the back end of the cruise. Here is our Oahu vacation itinerary that you can adjust to your available days.

best hawaii excursions for cruises

The cruise companies have excursions to see Pearl Harbor and some Honolulu sites with an airport drop-off. That is worth doing if you can fit it in and if you didn’t allow extra days on Oahu.

What to bring with you on your Hawaii tours and excursions

best hawaii excursions for cruises

Here’s a list of general items you’ll need or want for your excursions.

  • Your identification and key card
  • Tour vouchers
  • Fully charged smart phone and/or camera
  • A light jacket, preferably waterproof, in case of a rain shower. Additionally, some of the places like Waimea Canyon, Haleakala summit and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are in elevated, cooler climates.
  • Water to stay hydrated
  • A hat or visor
  • Comfortable walking shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty as you might be walking on some dusty or muddy trails.
  • Some tours may necessitate beach towels.

Can’t Miss Kauai Shore Excursions

Want to make the most out of your time on Kauai? Here are our short list of can’t miss Kauai shore excursions to add to your bucket list. If you are on Norwegian’s Pride of America then you will be able to stay late on the first day. Perfect for a luau or a sunset sail on the Napali Coast.

  • Napali Coast Tour: Explore one of the island’s most remote and most beautiful landscapes! Our favorite is the snorkel and sail tour , but you can also book a helicopter , airplane , or hiking tour.
  • Mountain Tubing : Enjoy a thrilling tubing adventure around the scenic Lihue Plantation.
  • Waimea Canyon: Visit this lush oasis of valleys on a hiking tour of Waimea Canyon.

Kauai Shore Excursion Tips

If you’re arriving in Kauai on the Norwegian’s Pride of America, you’ll have practically two full days to explore this beautiful island. This gives you plenty of time to take part in multiple excursions and do a late-night excursion like a luau or sunset sail.

Thankfully, ships dock at Nawiliwili Harbor, which is centrally located next to many of Kauai’s top attractions. Click here for directions to Nawiliwili Harbor .

Because you have extra time, Kauai is a great place to do things you can’t do at other ports of call. For example, you can take a full-day tour, stay on land to watch the sunset, or go on a long hiking adventure. You can also go to a luau (the three we recommend are a 10 to 30-minute drive), as they tend to be more traditional and intimate compared to the other islands.

Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the Hawaii cruise ports so you know what to expect at each stop. Some ports are central to a downtown area where you could spend all day ( Kailua Pier ) and others are far from anything you’ll want to do ( Kahului Harbor ).

Kauai shore excursions luau

For travelers who’d rather see the island on their own, we highly recommend booking a rental car for your stay. This will be much cheaper than relying on taxis or Ubers to take you to the different sights. We have a few recommendations for discount rental car companies if you choose to go down this route.

Having a rental car gives you a lot of flexibility – which can be a blessing or a curse! If you need help narrowing down your options of what to do, then check out our Cruising Hawaii Guide for a detailed self-guided itinerary.

There’s a lot to see on the island, but these are a few spots that you won’t want to miss. Click the location name for Google Map directions.

  • Lihue : 5 minutes from the harbor
  • Waimea Canyon : 1 hour from the harbor
  • Poipu on Kauai’s South Shore: 20 minutes from the harbor

Where to Book Kauai Shore Excursions

Booking kauai shore excursions with the ship.

If you decide to book an excursion, then you have the possibility to do so with the cruise ship. Here are a few benefits of booking a tour with the cruise line:

  • Guaranteed Return: Tours organized by the ship are scheduled to bring you back before departure. While this isn’t a big deal on the first day, it is a nice guarantee if you’re planning to explore the second day.
  • Transportation: These excursions usually include transportation to and from the dock, so there’s no need to worry about arranging your own taxi or ride share.
  • Cost: Kauai excursions aren’t cheap, especially if you book through the cruise line. But since they include transportation and a guaranteed return, we think this extra cost is justifiable!
  • Refunds: The weather and ocean conditions around Kauai can change in an instant. If the ship is not allowed to dock, then they’ll refund the cost of the excursion.
  • Booking Flexibility: Not sure if you want to do an organized tour? Don’t worry! You can book this online before the ship sets sail or once you’re aboard. Just know they can fill up fast through the ship.

Booking Kauai Shore Excursions with the Tour Operator

There are some huge benefits to booking your tour directly with the local tour operator on Kauai. However, one of the biggest disadvantages is not having a guaranteed return back to the ship. If you are running late, it is crucial to call the cruise to let them know you’re on your way!

But don’t let the fear of missing the ship deter you! Here are some reasons why we recommend booking with the tour operator:

  • Supporting Local Businesses: Unlike booking a tour with the ship (where the cruise line takes a commission), arranging a tour on land means the company keeps all the profits. This is great for supporting the local community in Kauai!
  • Cost Savings: Tours are generally more affordable when not booked through the middleman. If you are on a budget, then booking with the tour operator is going to be the more affordable option.
  • Availability: Cruise ship tours are limited and can sell out. If your favorite excursion is booked, you can find more tour options on land.
  • Small Groups: These tours usually have much smaller groups than the ones organized by the tour. In our experience, there are usually no more than 12 people on the excursion.
  • Cancellation Policy: One thing to keep in mind is the company’s cancellation policy. Depending on the operator, most tours will allow you to cancel anywhere from 72 to 24 hours in advance.

If you’re traveling with mobility or accessibility needs, rest easy knowing Hawaii has you in mind. We have a complete guide to Hawaii Handicap Accessible Trip Planning so you know what to expect (a whole lot of aloha).

The Best Kauai Shore Excursions

When it comes to the different types of Kauai shore excursions, the options are seemingly endless. To help point you in the right direction, we will be sharing trusted and reputable tour operators, most of whom we’ve been out with ourselves.

Remember, if you’re on Norwegian’s Pride of America, you’ll have two days on Kauai. That means you can take advantage of sunset or late tours on your first day and early morning or all-day tours on your second day.

Click the links below to learn more about the tour and to book directly with the local, Kauai tour operator.

Napali + Ni’ihau Snorkel Tour

Explore two of Kauai’s most sought-after destinations in one day! Your tour starts with a cruise up the striking Napali Coast before making your way to Ni’ihau, the Forbidden Island, a private invite-only island where you’ll stop to go snorkeling just offshore Ni’ihau at a volcanic crater.

You won’t be allowed on the island, but it’s a really cool experience to get close to a place that hasn’t been touched by modern conveniences like power, plumbing, phones, or paved roads.

This tour can only be done if you’re docked on Kauai overnight, as it starts bright and early at 6:00 am. Unfortunately, no transportation is included, so you’ll need to make sure you give yourself at least 30 minutes to make your way there.

Kauai shore excursions Ni'ihau

Napali Coast Sunset and Dinner Cruise

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion (or just celebrating the fact that you’re in Hawaii!), this Napalia Coast sunset cruise is guaranteed to be a memorable experience. On this 3.5-hour journey, you’ll get to soak in the spectacular views while enjoying appetizers, dinner, and drinks.

The boat leaves from Port Allen (30 minutes from the cruise terminal) at 2:30pm, and you’ll be required to arrange your own transportation.

Helicopter Tour of the Napali Coast

Roughly 80% of Kauai is inaccessible by foot or car, leaving stretches of wilderness completely untouched by tourism. You’ll be able to see parts of the island that few tourists ever do on this 1-hour helicopter ride of the Napali Coast !

When you book this private helicopter tour, you can choose whether you want to have the doors on or off (if you’re feeling extra adventurous)! All flights leave from the Lihue Airport, which is just a short 5-minute drive away from the cruise ship harbor.

Flight over Napali Coast and Waimea Canyon

Another option to see the Napali Coast and Waimea Canyon from the air is by plane. This scenic flight lasts 1-hour and takes you over the iconic cliffs, beaches, and jungles that Kauai is famous for. It’s also more affordable compared to the helicopter tour, as it’s a group flight with up to 6 passengers.

There are multiple tour times to choose from, and all of them leave from the nearby Lihue Airport.

Napali Coast Snorkel and Sail

For a fun family day out, the Napali Coast Snorkel and Sail tour is an awesome way to spend your day on Kauai. Departing from Port Allen, your catamaran will travel up to the Napali Coast where you’ll get to snorkel in the ocean for 50 minutes. After lunch and drinks (which are included), you’ll continue your sailing journey until the early afternoon.

Transportation is not included with this tour so make sure to arrange for a ride ahead of time. Because of the 7:30 am start time, this trip can only be done on the second day if your cruise is docked overnight.

We share the 5 Best Napali Coast boat tours here .

The other tour travels to the north and east sides of Kauai to see Opaeka’a Falls, Kilauea Lighthouse, and more.

Both tours last 7 hours and can be booked for up to 7 guests. Pick-up and drop-off can be at the terminal, which makes this the perfect excursion for cruise ship passengers.

Waimea Canyon

This half-day Kauai shore excursion tour picks you up right at the cruise terminal and whisks you away to Waimea Canyon State Park. It’s very similar to the Waimea Canyon excursion offered by NCL’s Pride of America ship but at a much more budget-friendly price!

Tours leave from Kapa’a, which is 15 minutes away from the harbor.

FAQ on Kauai Shore Excursions

Where do cruise ships dock for kauai shore excursions.

Cruise ships arrive at Kauai’s Nawiliwili Harbor, located in the town of Lihue (southeastern coast near the airport).

kauai shore excursions nawiliwili harbor cruise dock

Can I get picked up by taxi, Uber, or Lyft from the dock for my Kauai shore excursions?

Since most of these tours do not include transportation, you will need to take a taxi, Uber, or Lyft to the excursion meeting point. You also have the option to rent a car from the Lihue Airport or from a rental car satellite office near the harbor.

We have more detailed information about rental car companies and other transportation options in our Cruising Hawaii Guide .

Do tour operators offer pickup at the dock?

Depending on your excursion, pick up and drop off at the cruise terminal may or may not be offered. If you don’t see this option listed on the website, you can always call the company to confirm.

What should I know about booking tours in Hawaii?

Before you book your excursion on Kauai (or anywhere else in Hawaii, for that matter), keep these tips in mind:

  • It’s customary to tip your tour guides anywhere from $10 to $20 per person. However, this can be more or less depending on the level of service you received.
  • Kauai is the rainiest island in Hawaii, and it’s possible that tours may be canceled due to bad or dangerous weather. Since variable weather is the norm on Kauai, many tours run rain or shine as long as it’s safe. Feel free to call the company or check with your cruise line to confirm if you’re worried about the weather.
  • If you’re prone to seasickness, make sure to stock up on anti-nausea medication. This can be helpful on the cruise and on the smaller tour boats if you’re going out on the water!
  • Many tours have age restrictions (usually guests need to be over 5 years old). Double-check this before booking your Kauai shore excursion if you have little ones with you.

Melanesian Encounter

Lifou, new caledonia.

Duration 2 hrs

Visit the Melanesian village of Hnathalo, where ancient customs are still practiced religiously and traditional island values are held in high esteem. Hnathalo is also the name of the tribe living there. Following a welcoming coconut drink, you will walk among the village’s thatched huts, hand-carved totems and open expanses shaded by swaying palms and towering Royal Poinciana trees. It will be like traveling back in time, as little has changed over the years because traditional Melanesian ways are still fervently practiced in Hnathalo. That is especially true in the preparation of dishes such as bougna, a concoction that you will sample after seeing how it’s cooked over red-hot stones in a cleverly designed ground oven. You will also be invited to enter the circular Chief’s Hut, one of the largest of its kind in New Caledonia, and view a church that French Catholic missionaries constructed in 1883. It is decorated with period furnishings that enhance the authenticity.

HIGHLIGHTS • Learn about the traditional Melanesian way of life in the rural village Hnathalo. • Sample the Melanesian dish bougna, which is cooked in banana leaves in an earthen oven. • See the interior of the revered Chief’s Hut and a missionary-built, 19th-century church.

HELPFUL HINTS • Dress in weather-appropriate clothing. • Wear flat comfortable walking shoes.

Cliffs of Jokin

Gain an understanding of life on Lifou by visiting a prosperous vanilla plantation and the village of Jokin, which overlooks one of the island’s most gorgeous seascapes. Although Lifou’s terrain is rugged, especially along the coast, it is ideal for growing vanilla beans, as you will see firsthand on the plantation. The majority of the vanilla grown on the island is exported to flavor everything from ice cream to perfume, but a small quantity is always reserved for use by the islanders. After a tour of the wonderfully aromatic plantation, you will have the chance to sample a cup of vanilla-enhanced coffee. In the northernmost village of Jokin, you will enjoy free time to wander around and mingle with the residents, who will eagerly share the details of daily life in their small, rather remote village. Jokin perches high atop a fossilized coral cliff overlooking one of the island’s most magnificent bays, and the views are breathtaking.

HIGHLIGHTS • Visit a vanilla plantation to see how this aromatic flavoring is derived from orchids. • Sample a cup of vanilla-enhanced coffee and discover other uses of versatile vanilla. • Mingle with the villagers in remote Jokin and admire the ocean views from its coral cliffs.

Scenic Juneau & Hatchery

Juneau, alaska.

Duration 2 1/4 hrs

Your journey begins with a narrated tour of downtown Juneau and the city's highlights as you make your way to Mendenhall Valley. The first stop is at the Brotherhood Bridge. Here is where you will be able to take in the amazing views of the Mendenhall Valley. The bridge was and is of great historic and symbolic importance, representing a bridging of the gap between Native and Non-Native people and overcoming racial tensions. The bridge features 10 bronze medallions with the ANB crest and imagery, sculpted by Roy Peratrovich Jr. In honor of the ANB’s 50th anniversary. The crew on the medallions depicts the two great Tlingit moieties, Eagle and Raven. The ANB is the solid rock on which these moieties rest. Afterward your drive takes you to Juneau's Macaulay Salmon Hatchery and Visitor Center. There you will learn the value of ocean ranching to Juneau's commercial and sport fishing industries and the hatchery's role in keeping the area salmon population at sustainable levels.

Tropical Forest Walk & Secret Grotto

Meander through a tropical forest and explore a grotto, where you will discover how the local Melanesians have gained great benefits from the natural environment. They have lived off the land for centuries, in particular, by hunting and using native flora for medicinal purposes. New Caledonia boasts more than 2,400 species of indigenous plants, so the islanders have always had a vast array of flora at their disposal. Some plants are used to treat ailments while others contain toxins that are sometimes added to rivers to temporarily paralyze fish so they can easily be caught. This is the sort of engaging information that the guide will impart during the forest walk. Later, you will explore a grotto by torchlight, which will eerily illuminate the interior, so you can see the odd shapes of the stalagmites and stalactites. You will also learn how the Melanesians use traditional methods to gather coconut crabs, trap birds and hunt wild pigs.

HIGHLIGHTS • Take a leisurely walk through a forest with a naturalist guide that will describe the flora. • Hear how the Melanesians use plants for medicinal purposes and hunt in the forest. • Explore a grotto by torchlight, which will make the interior look all the more dramatic.

Luecilla Beach & Scenic Drive

Duration 3 hrs

Explore the natural side of Lifou on an inspiring driving tour along its sparsely inhabited northern shore, followed by a relaxing stop at a pristine beach that rims a lagoon. Along the way, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of coral cliffs, turquoise seas and lush foliage, punctuated with splashes of brightly colored flowers. This is a true tropical paradise with little or no development, much like it has been for centuries. Still, you will drive through the island’s administrative center of We on beautiful Châteaubriand Bay at the end of a sugar-white beach on the east coast. Nearby, you will find Luecila Beach, an unspoiled stretch of sand that ranks as one of Lifou’s most picturesque and enjoyable as there are no resorts or shops to detract from the natural beauty. You will be free to do as you please there, whether it be swimming, beachcombing or simply relaxing in the shade of a coconut palm.

HIGHLIGHTS • Marvel at Lifou’s natural beauty on a panoramic drive along its undeveloped coast. • Pass through the island’s administrative center of We on lovely Châteaubriand Bay. • Spend free time relaxing on Luecila Beach, a serene stretch of sand near We.

Duration 4 1/2 hrs

Spectacular volcanoes, craters and steam vents are waiting to be explored at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park that has recently reopened after a period of tumultuous volcanic activity. The landscape of Volcanoes Park has dramatically changed as the floor of the Kilauea crater sunk over 1,500 feet and the overall caldera quadrupled in size and widened by over a square mile. Today, the explosive eruptions, earthquakes and ash clouds have been replaced by remarkable changes in the summit area. The highlights of this exciting tour include visits at each of the following destinations in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park while riding to each stop in comfort on a deluxe motor coach. Walk through the Kilauea Visitors Center to receive information on the Park’s current conditions, view educational exhibits and interact with park rangers. Enjoy unforgettable views of Kilauea from Volcano House, just a short walk across the street. Kilauea’s massive size and scale is realized from this vantage point. Then you’ll be engulfed in rising steam as ground water seeps down to the hot volcanic rocks at the Steam Vents. The area between the edge of Kilauea’s caldera and the outer cliffs are treeless because the extreme heat destroys their roots; only shallow-rooted grasses and other hearty plants survive here. On you return to the pier, visit the Big Island Candies Store. Established in 1977, each of its delectable candies and cookies are hand-crafted in this factory store. View the production process and see what goes into making these world famous Hawaiian treats. All products are made from only freshly roasted Big Island macadamia nuts and pure Kona and Ka‘u coffee from farms on the Big Island. Since its founding, Big Island Candies has continuously introduced new and imaginative products that "wow" both the eyes and taste buds of its growing legion of fans. The Volcanoes National Park Tour is not to be missed and includes round-trip transportation from the pier by deluxe motorcoach.

Pearl Harbor & Honolulu City (Airport Drop Off)

Honolulu, oahu.

Duration 6 hrs

Explore Honolulu’s highlights – from Pearl Harbor and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific to Hawaii’s first Christian church, and Iolani Palace and Washington Place, both former residences of the Hawaiian monarchy.

Pearl Harbor is one of Hawaii’s best-known landmarks and the scene of the devastating aerial attack by Japan that drove the U.S. into WWII. The Pearl Harbor Visitor's center exhibit galleries bring visitors closer to the sights and sounds of the events leading up to the attack on Oahu and its aftermath. These galleries display personal memorabilia, dramatic photographs, artifacts of the battle, and other exhibits.

In central Honolulu stand face to face with the larger-than-life statue of King Kamehameha I, the leader who united the Hawaiian Islands into one royal kingdom. Just across the street you’ll see the Iolani Palace, residence of Hawaii's last two monarchs. European in design, it boasted Hawaii’s first electric lights, flush toilets and internal phone system. Also nearby is Kawaiahao Church, Hawaii's first Christian house of worship, built of coral slabs from the offshore reefs.

At the heart of the downtown historic district you will notice the elegant Washington Place, now a museum, and once home to Liliuokalani, Hawaii’s last queen. Drive through the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, in the extinct volcanic crater known as the Punchbowl. It is the final resting place of some 53,000 veterans who lost their lives in 20th century wars, including those who died during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Enjoy panoramic city views on your drive to the airport.

These 8 Cruises Make It Easy to Explore Hawaii on Your Next Vacation

Here are our picks for some of the best Hawaii cruises.

best hawaii excursions for cruises

The islands of Hawaii are popular with families, couples, retirees, groups of friends, and really anyone who enjoys warm weather, tropical scenery, and the Aloha spirit of the 50th state. Each island offers a different climate, attractions, environment, and style, and even on the same island, there are major variations depending on location. On Oahu, for example, there's bustling Honolulu on the south shore and the more secluded surfing paradise of the North Shore . On the Big Island, the Hilo and Puna regions on the east coast are wet and heavily forested, whereas the Kona region, on the west coast, tends to be much drier.

Visitors to Hawaii, especially first-timers, will want to experience as much of the islands as possible, and a cruise is one way to accomplish that. You can embark from any of several ports on the West Coast (or within Hawaii itself), and the convenience of not worrying about hotel changes or local transportation is a plus. Below are some of the best cruises to see Hawaii . Dates, prices, amenities, and itineraries vary, so picking a cruise requires some planning and research. That's always part of the fun, and we hope this list will inspire you to get started.

What to Pack for Hawaii: The Ultimate Guide

By Diana Hubbell

Last updated: August 12th, 2024

What to pack for Hawaii - swimwear

  • Find a Cruise

“What to pack for Hawaii?” is thankfully a relatively easy question. This sun-drenched paradise has a tropical climate that stays relatively mild all year long. Consequently, there’s no need to cram heavy layers into your suitcase. Instead, you’ll want versatile, comfortable clothing that’s equally suited for strolling by the beach or walking through the streets of Honolulu.

Your Hawaii packing list depends quite a bit on how you envision your dream island vacation. Hawaii offers all sorts of opportunities for active travelers and outdoor sports enthusiasts. From mountain biking to paragliding to surfing, there are plenty of ways to get your heart rate up.

At the same time, plenty of travelers would rather just chill out on the sand. There’s certainly nothing wrong with either approach. Hawaii is very much a choose-your-own-adventure sort of destination. Just remember to pack accordingly.

Orange swimsuit with slippers and beach hat

Naturally, the first thing in anyone’s suitcase for a Hawaiian adventure should be a bikini or set of board shorts. Life in this volcanic archipelago revolves around the ocean, which is why any traveler should be prepared to plunge into the water at a moment’s notice. Most travelers bring a couple of options from which to choose.

The type of swimwear you bring hinges on the type of beach-goer you are. If your tropical island fantasy involves sipping pina coladas in a lounge chair, by all means, opt for a bikini. If you’re envisioning playing beach volleyball or hopping on jet skis, you may want something sturdier.

Hawaii is also one of the best places to learn how to surf . While surfing schools typically supply wetsuits, there’s no harm in bringing your own if you have one. Note that because the sun can get quite strong here, it’s sometimes an idea to bring an old T-shirt or a rash vest for snorkeling during the middle of the afternoon. While it’s less glamorous, it’ll keep those UV rays from scorching your back.

Sunglasses with beach hat

A good set of polarized sunglasses are a must for every visitor to this sunny archipelago. Polarized lenses offer better UV protection and help reduce glare. They’ll help you see better, whether you’re deep-sea fishing or sunbathing, they’ll help you see clearly—and look better in the process.

Woman applying sunscreen

Hawaii is closer to the equator than any other state in the U.S. That means that the sun here is particularly powerful. Because both water and sand reflect solar rays, its impact is further compounded on beach days. Even if you don’t notice the sun’s heat while swimming, you may feel its effects when you’re back on dry land.

Waterproof sunscreen that is SPF30 or higher is an absolute essential. Be sure to look for sunscreen that is reef-safe to avoid inadvertently harming wildlife. Most reef-safe sunscreens tend to be labeled accordingly. Mineral sunscreens are generally safe choices. Note that many travelers opt to bring separate face sunscreens, which are less likely to cause breakouts.

Colorful Resort Wear

What to pack for Hawaii - colorful resort wear

Hawaiian shirts

You’re in the tropics, which means you can leave the little black dresses back home. While there’s almost never a real dress code in Hawaii, the de facto look is beach chic. That doesn’t mean you have to opt entirely for Hawaiian shirts. But adding a pop of bright color here and there will help you get into the aloha spirit.

Virtually all locals wear Aloha shirts and while in some countries it’s seen as culturally inappropriate for tourists to dress like a local, in Hawaii it’s absolutely fine.

For women, linen dresses, pants, and shirts with tasteful prints all go gracefully from day to evening here, while helping you stay cool. Silks is another breathable, lightweight fabric that adds a touch of sophistication to outfits.

What to pack for Hawaii - hats

Much like a good SPF, hats are key to protecting your face from harmful UV rays. There’s no wrong shape of hat to bring to Hawaii. The one real limiting factor may be deciding what fits best with your luggage and lifestyle.

If you’re planning for lots of mountain biking and other strenuous outdoor activities, a trucker hat may be a good idea. For beach bums, a bucket hat or crushable sun hat may be a better option.

Water Bottle

Reusable water bottle

Water bottle

Especially in a tropical climate like Hawaii, it’s essential to stay hydrated. If you’re planning to be out in the sun all day, you’re going to want to remember to drink water throughout.

A portable water bottle is both economic and more environmentally conscious. You can opt for any type, although many travelers prefer water stored in glass to plastic.

Outlet Adapter with USB Ports

Outlet adapters

Outlet adapters

When it comes to keeping all of your electronic devices charged, you can never be too prepared. Bringing an outlet adapter that allows you to charge multiple devices simultaneously is a great way to keep everyone in the family happy. And it should almost go without saying, but be sure all phone and laptop chargers make it into your luggage.

Portable Chargers

Portable charger

Portable charger

For better or worse, we all tend to rely heavily on our phones while traveling. Between scouring Google Maps for directions, reading reviews, and taking photos, battery life never goes far enough.

Portable chargers are affordable, widely available, and fit easily in a carry-on. Even if you don’t end up needing it, the chances are high that someone in your party will.

Pretty brown sandals

If ever there was a place to show off your pedicure, this is it. Open-toed shoes are a must for these sandy shores. In fact, if your luggage space allows, you may want to throw in multiple pairs.

You can never go wrong with a pair of flip-flops. For slightly dressier scenarios, a stylish pair of espadrilles or wedges are often a great choice. And if you’re the type who never wants to put socks on in a tropical climate, throw in a pair of athletic sandals for walking.

Sneakers or Hiking Boots

Man wearing hiking shoes

Remember that there’s a lot to do in Hawaii besides the beach. That’s why you’ll want to bring comfortable, close-toed shoes as well. A sturdy pair of sneakers should cover most of your needs, although travelers hoping to fit in a more serious trek may opt for hiking boots.

Breathable Hiking Clothing

What to pack for Hawaii - hiking clothing

Breathable hiking clothing

Hawaii’s weather is delightfully pleasant much of the time, but can err on the humid side. Moisture-wicking, breathable fabrics are a lifesaver if you plan on doing any strenuous outdoor activity.

Shorts and T-shirts should do the trick for most occasions, but some travelers prefer to pack athleisure wear.

Workout Gear

Sure, you’re on vacation, but there’s no reason you can’t sneak in a little workout session there. Particularly after seeing all the tanned, toned beach bodies running around, you may find yourself inspired to sneak in a jog, or at least a few sun salutations. Adding a set of comfortable workout clothes doesn’t take up much extra luggage space. You’re likely to be happy if you did.

Lightweight Rain Gear

People wearing rain ponchos

Rain poncho

Hawaii’s rainy season is November through March, but these islands can see downpours at any time of year. Thankfully, these tropical showers never tend to last long. It’s extremely rare for the weather to be socked in all day long here. Rather, expect a brief, sudden burst of rain, usually followed by a return to sunshine.

While the rain is seldom a real inconvenience, it’s good to be prepared for it. You could always haul around a portable umbrella, but locals tend to prefer a lightweight poncho. Many of these roll up small enough to fit in a pocket.

Beach Reading Material

Reading material or Kindle

Reading material

Few things in life feel more luxurious than kicking back on a white-sand beach with a good book. Many travelers love Kindles and other portable reading devices for convenience, although you’ll have to remember to charge them.

For others, the analogue simplicity of a paperback is hard to beat. What you choose to read is, of course, entirely up to you and your literary preferences. This is, however, a terrific time for something on the lighter side. Think: juicy romances, quick-paced crime novels, and other quasi-guilty pleasures.

Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo

Dry shampoo

When you’re trying to pack in as many sights and activities into each day as possible, it pays to be able to cut down on your grooming time. Dry shampoo is a helpful travel hack that offers the illusion of a fresh blowout within minutes. Unlike earlier dry shampoos, many current versions offered by brands really do clean hair by soaking up excess oils.

Simply spray on, wait a minute, then brush through your locks for fluffier, grease-free hair. The one thing to remember with dry shampoo is that you don’t want to overuse it. Never use it for more than two consecutive days and ideally no more than two times in a week. When used appropriately, however, it can help extend washes and give you extra time on the beach.

Motion Sickness Medication

Woman putting medication in her bag

From whale-watching to deep-sea fishing, lots of activities in Hawaii involve being on boats. That may sound stressful if you’re prone to seasickness. Adding a pack of Dramamine or another over-the-counter anti-nausea medication in your bag is always a good idea.

For travelers who prefer to avoid medication, ginger candies or pressure point arm bands can also be a big help. Even if you personally don’t suffer from motion sickness, someone else in your party may. It’s always helpful to be prepared, especially in this case.

Underwater Camera

What to pack for Hawaii - underwater camera

Underwater camera

Hawaii has an unbelievable array of colorful corals and marine life. Whether you’re PADI-certified and ready to scuba dive or prefer to snorkel, you’re going to see some incredible underwater scenes. While it’s easy to rent flippers, masks, and other gear, there’s one essential item you’ll need to bring yourself: an underwater camera.

There are a few ways to go about catching snapshots of sea turtles, reef triggerfish, and tangs. The first and usually the cheapest is to pick up a disposable underwater camera. These are available for as little as $30 or $40 and can be easily ordered online. The quality of the pictures may not be the best, but these affordable options will still get the job done.

If you’re willing to shell out a few hundred dollars, you can pick up an easily portable, waterproof point-and-shoot. These will give you noticeably better photos, but only really make sense if you plan on future snorkeling or diving vacations. Finally, you can purchase a waterproof case for most smartphones.

Hawaii Packing List FAQs

How do i pack for seven days in hawaii.

Pack a mix of lightweight clothing, plus sandals, swimsuits, sunscreen, and any essentials you might need for outdoor activities.

Be sure to leave a little room in your suitcase for souvenirs. There are tons of cute boutiques in Hawaii’s main cities. It’s a great place to stock up on stylish beachwear, handcrafted jewelry, and other souvenirs.

What should I not bring to Hawaii?

Don’t bother bringing heavy puffer jackets or other winter clothing. You won’t need it, regardless of the time of year. As with most destinations, a few layers are always helpful. Hawaii can get cool in the evenings, even if it’s never truly chilly. Think lightweight cardigans, rain jackets, or silk cover-ups.

Will I need jeans in Hawaii?

Jeans are likely to be too warm for Hawaii’s tropical climate. Light, flowy clothing in breathable fabrics is the name of the game here. That said, you may wish to throw in a pair of jean shorts.

What to pack for Hawaii - luau

What should I wear to a luau?

The vibe of a luau is both festive and decidedly laid-back. You’ll want to dress up a bit, but feel free to ditch the cocktail attire. Brightly colored and printed fabrics are the move here. A Hawaiian shirt is fine.

Opt for elegant, beachy garments accessorized with stylish shoes and accessories. Note that kalua pork and other Hawaiian dishes served aren’t necessarily the neatest to eat. Try to avoid wearing anything that isn’t easily washable.
