Tour the Anheuser-Busch Brewery in St. Louis

Whitney Curtis/Getty Images

You can't talk about beer in St. Louis without bringing up one of its largest companies, Anheuser-Busch. The world-famous brewery has been a part of the city's landscape since 1852. The best way to learn about Anheuser-Busch and its beer-making process is by taking a free tour of the A-B Brewery in Soulard, just south of Downtown St. Louis . For the tours, go to the entrance at 12th and Lynch streets.

Visiting Tips

  • This is a walking tour so make sure to wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes. Part of the tour goes outside, so dress for the weather as well.
  • Children are welcome on the tour, but the brewery is not easily stroller accessible. Children will likely have to walk or be carried during parts of the tour.
  • Fridays and weekends are the busiest times for tours. For smaller crowds, plan to visit on a weekday.
  • Registration is not required to take a tour unless you are bringing a large group of 15 or more.
  • The tour lasts for a little more than an hour. It ends with free beer samples and soda for those younger than 21.

What You'll See

There are three main things you'll see on a tour. First is the Budweiser Clydesdales and their stable. The Clydesdales have been the face of the brand since the 1930s. They make hundreds of appearances every year.

Then, it's a walk through the brewing and bottling areas to see where Budweiser, Bud Light, and other brands are made. This portion of the tour includes stops in the historic Brew House, the fermentation cellar, and the packaging plant. This is where you'll learn about the history of the company and how it grew into the brewing giant that it is today.

Finally, it's a trip to the tasting room for two free samples of A-B products. Soda and snacks are also available. After the tour, you can stop by the gift shop for souvenirs or hit the Biergarten for more food and drinks.

As you might expect, Anheuser-Busch does things in a big way even with its tours. Groups can be quite large, and tours move pretty quickly. There won't be time to stop and chat with the brewmaster about the quality of the hops. If you're looking for a smaller, more personalized brewery tour, try Schlafly Bottleworks, an independent craft beer maker in St. Louis.

If you don't mind spending a little money, you can sign up for Beer School before you take a tour. The half-hour class includes tastings, pouring demonstrations, souvenirs, and information about the brewing process. Another option is the Brewmaster Tour, which offers a more in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at brewery operations.

Parking and Transportation

The A-B Brewery is easy to get to by car, just off Interstate 55 south of Downtown St. Louis. There is no Metrolink stop nearby, so taking the train is not a good option. MetroBuses do run to Soulard, but with plenty of free parking, the best option for many is to drive.

Other Soulard Attractions

Soulard is a historic neighborhood that hosts a popular Mardi Gras celebration in February and an Oktoberfest party in October. The Soulard Farmers Market also draws crowds year-round, so there's plenty to see and do after your brewery tour if you're visiting at those times.

Popular Soulard Restaurants

If you're hungry before or after your tour, Soulard has some great restaurants that are worth a try. Barbecue lovers should stop in at Bogarts Smokehouse for its fantastic brisket, pulled pork, and ribs. McGurk's Irish Pub has been a popular destination for decades with its upscale pub grub, cold Guinness, and authentic Irish music. Another good bet is Molly's where you'll find drink specials, a wide variety of bistro fare, and live music.

Are the visits/tours no longer free?

No free tours. 3 tour options to choose from. You can visit the location and go to the Biergarten/gift shop though

Do you allow backpacks on the Beermaster tour? Also, what about a cello (musical instrument) that is carried like a backpack (dual strap, vertically)?

Unfortunately we do not allow backpacks, or any larger purses, on tours. We do have some lockers for valuables on site, but I doubt that something the size of a cello would fit in them.

I have been a Bud fan all my life so this was an exciting moment for me to make it to St. Louis and visit the brewery. The property is amazingly clean and full of history. Our tour guide Bob was helpful and fun. If your in the area it is a MUST to stop by.

Jay was a great tour guide! The tour was very informative and entertaining. Would definitely recommend it to others. Go Cards!

The tour was great! If you are wanting to learn about a huge part of Saint Louis history, then it's a must to take a tour at Budweiser. It was a phenomenal experience and a memory that my wife and I will cherish for years to come. It was a blast!

I'm not much of a beer drinker, but I do love animals. So I was all about the Clydesdale VIP tour and getting the opportunity to see them up close and personal. They are every bit as majestic as I'd expect them to be. Bonus-we got a peak at one of the Dalmatians, Mike, who was lounging in his kennel. The tour is an hour long and takes you to the stables and the storage room for the horses' garb along with the outside area where you get to pet a horse. Each of their harness outfits is over $100K and custom made. Impressive! The tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. During the tour, we had the opportunity to have two different beers-one in a can and one on tap. I enjoyed the mango cart, which was a fruity beer that didn't taste too much like....beer. Guests of all ages were allowed on this tour, only those over 21 got to drink, of course. If you have children that like animals, this could be a fun outing for them.

I had to defer from composing my GOOGLE review for the AB Brewery Tour - Beermasters Tour in STL for approximately five days as I was so impressed! Visiting the Anheuser-Busch Brewery for a tour was an absolutely phenomenal experience! Our Beermaster Tour began at 12:30 pm, Saturday, July 29, 2024 at the STL Main Campus. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed into their world-class facility. The tour allowed us to explore not just a brewery, but a sprawling campus that showcases the heart and soul of one of the world's most iconic beer brands. Truly the "KING OF BEERS" as our wonderful and very passionate tour guide (MARK, I hate I missed his last name) explained. We started our journey by visiting the manufacturing facilities, where we witnessed firsthand the meticulous process of brewing their famous beers. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, providing fascinating insights into every step of the brewing process. Seeing the state-of-the-art equipment and learning about the commitment to quality was truly impressive. We also got to partake of wonderful liquid PROBIOTICS! A highlight of the tour was visiting the Clydesdales. These majestic horses are synonymous with Anheuser-Busch's heritage and seeing them up close was a breathtaking experience. Learning about their care and training was a testament to the brewery's dedication to tradition and excellence. Of course, no visit would be complete without tasting their beer straight from the finishing cellars. One fun fact that Mark mentioned that if we were to extract one 12 oz. bottle directly from one of many stainless-steel tanks, the rate of our consumption would be one bottle each hour, 24 hours per day for approximately 132 years! Then we would have consumed the entire contents of just one of the many tanks! The freshness and quality of the beer consumed were unmatched, and being able to sample a variety of brews tailored to our preferences made the experience even more memorable. What sets Anheuser-Busch apart is their ability to customize the tour to fit your interests and timeframe. Whether you're a beer enthusiast eager to delve into the brewing process or simply curious about the history and scale of this global powerhouse, there's something for everyone. Overall, the Anheuser-Busch Brewery tour exceeded all expectations. It's not just a tour; it's an immersive journey through the world of brewing excellence. What was especially wonderful was that MARK, being the true professional and very passionate individual, imparted genuine feelings of loyalty, pride, and honor for the product he represents, Anheuser-Busch Beer. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and enriching experience. Cheers to Anheuser-Busch for an unforgettable visit! Visited on Weekend Wait time 10-30 min Reservation recommended Yes

Went a bit early to have lunch before the tour. I expected a fast food style meal but what I received was a very good burger, great fries, and served by great folks who made you feel very welcome. Then, we get to the tour. Tom was friendly, knowledgeable and very deep in the AB history. Highly suggested for anyone in the area, or, visitors coming through STL

I've been in St. Louis three times, and somehow, this is only my second time touring the Budweiser brewery. I have to say . . . . one of my favorite beer/wine/spirits tours. Both times, I've done the $15 Day Fresh tour (which is a fantastic option). This time, I was hoping to do a different tour, but since this was a spur of the moment side trip after several days in bourbon country, I booked last minute and it was the only one still available. That being said, what a great tour. The history of the brewery and campus is amazing. The tour covers a little bit of everything. A history lesson, beer, amazing architecture, beer, clydesdales, bottling . . . . And don't forget about the beer.

Great experience! What? Did the beermeister tour - it was very well planned out and thorough! It starts with beer and ends with beer. Ofcourse as you go through the stages you also get to experience the various stages of the beer. Even if you aren't a beer person, it's a great tour to do if you have nothing to do. Environment Located in st.louis. It is a big space with tonne of parking available. Niceness of the staff Very nice staff! One of the team we signed up for didn't show up but they gave us the safety hat (souvenir hat) and a pint glass anyways Dollar Decent dollar for a full day event Yes? I would recommend yes

5 Ways to Tour the Anheuser-Busch Brewery (Yes, you can bring the kids)

How can you combine your love of St. Louis, beer and your kids? Why take them on a tour of the Anheuser-Busch Brewery, of course! Yes, a tour of our beloved King of Beers is totally family friendly! Seriously! What better way to teach kids about city history than to tour one of our oldest companies?

Anheuser Busch Brewery Tours

To find out how things have changed, I went right to the source and took a tour at Anheuser-Busch. I peppered my guide with questions about the various tours and here’s what I found out!

5 ways to tour Anheuser-Busch

The  Complimentary Tour has been shorten and no longer visits the bottling line, but you’ll still see the Clydesdale stable, the beechwood aging tanks and the Brew House. Adults get a beer sample at the Brew House and the end of the tour in the Biergarten. It’s about 45 minutes.

The Day Fresh Brewery Tour is basically the old free tour and still visits the bottling line along with everything in the Complimentary Tour. It now costs $10, but you’ll get a third beer in a bottle you can take home. The bottle is right off the line. (Minors are only $4 and under 2 are free.)  This tour is about 75 minutes long.

The  Historic Schoolhouse Museum Tour visits the three historic buildings on campus and is limited to a much smaller group so you can really chat with your guide. It costs $25 for adults, $10 for minors and under 2 are free. Adults will get three samples on the tour: at the Brew House, the Museum and at the Biergarten. You’ll also get to keep your sampling glass from the museum.

The Beermaster Tour is a behind the scene adventure and you’ll get to taste beers right from the tanks, just like the A-B Brewmasters. It’s $35 and you’ll get to keep a glass AND a hat. Minors are $15 and under 2 are free. This tour is about 2 hours long, visits everything on the Day Fresh Tour plus a whole lot more–the Primary Fermentation Cellar, Lager Cellar and the Finishing Cellar. You’ll also need to RSVP for this tour.

The Beer School  is a class offered just to adults over 21. It’s $15.  It runs about 45 minutes and introduces you to a variety of beer styles, ingredients, proper pouring techniques and food-pairing suggestions. You’ll also take home “gifts for the beer connoisseur.”

5 ways to tour Anheuser-Busch

The Historic Schoolhouse Museum Tour

Since I’ve done the old complementary tour many times in the past, I decided to check out the new museum. This tour really delves deep into the history of Anheuser-Busch and the Busch family. You’ll visit all three buildings owned by A-B that are on the Registry of National Historic Landmarks: the Clydesdale Stable, the Brew House and the Old Schoolhouse. They were built between 1868 and 1892 and were placed on the registry back in 1967.

If you’ve toured the brewery before, you’ve seen the stable and the brew house…but never the inside of the school. Lyon School, as it was called, was once a part of the St. Louis Public School District, and was sold to the brewery in 1907. It served as the brewery’s main administrative building, and each president of Anheuser-Busch had an office there until 1982 when the office building at One Busch Place was finished.

An original Budweiser Girl?

You can learn a lot on this tour. Even though I’ve seen the Clydesdale Stable before, I learn even more about it on this trip. And if you know me at all, you know the horses are my favorite part of the tour. For example, I learned that the horse names over the stalls are from the very first Budweiser Clydesdales hitch!

$25 might seem a little steep for a brewery tour, even if they are giving you an extra beer. However, if you like history it’s worth it. Our guides really new everything about Anheuser-Busch and the small tour size was really nice. It was like a personal tour of the brewery! We had time to really look at everything, ask tons of questions and take plenty of photos. Unlike the free tour I’ve taken in the past, our guides never turned on a film–every fact was known by heart.

Now I’ll admit, I went on this tour while the kids were at school–I took a friend with me that day. We had a blast! After our three samples we decided to play it safe and stick around the Biergarten for lunch.

Anheuser-Busch menu

If you time your visit right, you can also get a free photo with a Clydesdale! Every day between 3:30 and 4:30 pm they bring a horse to the Biergarten. Visitors can snap a photo with him using their own camera.

More information about the new Old Schoolhouse Museum and historical tour can be found here: Introducing the Old Schoolhouse Museum and Historical Experience .

As the headquarters and flagship brewing facility for Anheuser-Busch, this is a must-visit for beer drinkers. You can stop by the beer garden to enjoy a pint or two with a side of pub fare from the on-site eatery, or you can sign up for a tour to see more of the complex. Experiences range from the Day Fresh Tour, which takes visitors through the brewing process and includes a visit to the Clydesdale stables, to the Beermaster Tour, which invites participants to sample beer right from the finishing tank and include stops at the packaging facility and Old Lyon Schoolhouse Museum.

Most visitors praised the impressive facilities and the beautiful grounds. The Clydesdales were definitely a hit among recent visitors, while others were pleased with the knowledgeable tour guides. Summer travelers advised timing your visit early or late in the day to avoid the mid-day heat since part of the tours take place outside.

To visit the Anheuser-Busch Brewery, head about 2 miles south of downtown St. Louis. The beer garden is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tour tickets range from $15 to $40 per person. Tour availability varies, but the basic Day Fresh Tour is available daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parking is available on-site; MetroBus No. 73 stops at Lynch and 11th Street, not far from the brewery. For more information, visit the brewery's website .

#1 Gateway Arch National Park

This national park and its famous arch are dedicated to the country's westward expansion. The stainless steel Gateway Arch – an engineering marvel – was designed and submitted by Eero Saarinen during a national competition in the mid-1940s. It rises 630 feet into the air and spans 630 feet from leg to leg. Visitors can learn more about the arch's construction, Colonial St. Louis, the Lewis and Clark Expedition and more at the Museum at the Gateway Arch, which is located beneath the arch and houses six galleries.

For those who want to head to the top of the Gateway Arch (63 stories high), a tram ticket is required. From the indoor observation deck at the top of the arch, you can see as far as 30 miles on a clear day. Keep in mind: The tram is not accessible for wheelchairs or strollers, and there are no restrooms at the top of the Gateway Arch. If you're riding the tram to the top, you'll have to go through an airport-style security line, so budget an additional 30 minutes to successfully get through security before boarding your tram. In addition to the tram, there's also an hourlong riverboat cruise along the Mississippi River from March to November. Cruises are narrated by the boat's captain or a National Park Service ranger and spotlight the importance of the Mississippi River and the riverfront's role in the St. Louis economy.

What are the Budweiser Clydesdales? Learn more about the iconic horses

Portrait of Kaitlyn McCormick

The Budweiser Clydesdales marched (trotted?) down the streets of Margate on Aug. 15, but do you know why they're so famous?

Well, the story dates back to 1933, according to the Anheuser-Busch website.

How did the Budweiser Clydesdales originate?

To commemorate the end of the Prohibition era, when alcohol had been made illegal, August A. Busch Jr. and Adolphus Busch III surprised their father, August A. Busch Sr., with a six-horse Clydesdale hitch.

Thus began the beginning of a horse-drawn beer wagon as well as the order for a second six-horse hitch to be sent to New York to mark Prohibition's end. The spectacle drew crowds of thousands, the brand says, as people gathered to watch the horses make their way to the Empire State Building, where New York Gov. Alfred E. Smith received a case of Budweiser for his role in fighting Prohibition.

Next, the hitch would tour New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, drawing crowds to see the horse-drawn beer wagon and a now-important symbolism of the reborn beer industry and the end of Prohibition.

Soon, the group of six became eight, and in 1950 a Dalmatian was introduced as the Clydesdales' mascot to commemorate the Anheuser-Busch Newark Brewery.

What was Prohibition?

The Prohibition era took place in the United States from 1919 to 1933, after the ratification of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution banned the manufacture, transportation and sale of intoxicating liquors.

This era brought life to terms like "bootlegging" and "speakeasies," which reference the illegal transportation of liquors and undercover or secret places to engage in drinking.

The amendment itself was a result of the country's temperance movement and Anti-Saloon League, which blamed alcohol as a cause of social distresses such as domestic violence and poverty, and campaigned for its outlaw at local, state and federal levels, as noted in the Encyclopedia Britannica. But many would flout the law, and Prohibition itself was blamed for the rise in organized crime seeking to meet the demand for illegal alcohol. It was repealed by the 21st Amendment in 1933.

How are the Budweiser Clydesdales cared for?

According to Anheuser-Busch, the Clydesdales, now a group of ten, make hundreds of appearances each year, and a lot goes into maintaining their iconic look.

Expert groomers travel with the hitch for 10 months a year, making sure they look their best. Other handlers take care of the team's diets. Each horse consumes up to 25 quarts of whole grains, minerals and vitamins, 60 pounds of hay and 30 gallons of water on a warm day.

During travel, drivers keep an eye on the horses with special cameras connected to their trailers, which are equipped with air-cushioned suspension and thick rubber flooring. Each night the horses rest in local stables.

Where to see the Budweiser Clydesdales

Aside from event visitations, the Clydesdales can be seen seasonally at the Anheuser-Busch Breweries in St. Louis, Missouri, where they reside, or at Warm Springs Ranch, the breeding establishment in Boonville, Missouri.

You may also recognize the hitch from Super Bowl commercials going as far back as 1975.
