Cruise Control Not Working

It would be difficult to find a vehicle on the road today without cruise control. This invaluable feature makes driving long distances easier but can also cause trouble when it malfunctions. Understanding the reasons your cruise control stopped working ensures that you can get the problem fixed quickly for a more enjoyable ride.

While this fault can cause issues with the cruise control system itself, there could also be an effect on the acceleration of your vehicle. That’s why you want to have it looked at as soon as you notice a problem. Let’s take a quick look at the reasons your cruise control may have stopped working.

Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

The most common reason a cruise control stops working is due to a blown fuse or a defective brake pedal switch . It can also be caused by issues with the throttle control system or the ABS. In older cruise control systems, it can be caused by a broken vacuum line.

Here is a more detailed list of the possible reasons your cruise control is not working:

1. Blown Fuse

broken fuse

All electrical systems in the vehicle are controlled by fuses. Your cruise control system is attached to a fuse that can blow if there is a short circuit or fault. Without a good fuse, the cruise control system can’t work at all.

Thankfully, it’s not difficult to find and replace a blown fuse. Look in the owner’s manual to find the fuse that corresponds with the cruise control technology.

2. Defective Brake Pedal Switch

push brake pedal

The brake pedal switch is responsible for turning the brake lights on and off based on the pedal position. Cruise control systems are designed to disengage whenever your brake pedal gets pressed.

Because the cruise control is wired into the brake pedal switch, any fault can cause it to stop working. When the brake pedal switch malfunctions, the car believes the brakes are engaged, causing the system to turn off automatically. Not only that, but your car’s brake light might also be stuck on, leaving confused drivers in your wake.

3. Malfunctioning Speed Sensor

abs sensor close

Speed sensors are located on every wheel or differential. The purpose of these sensors is to monitor the speed of the wheels to determine if traction control is needed.

The speed sensors are also part of the cruise control system. When a sensor fails, the cruise control can stop working and the speedometer might act strange as well.

If there is an issue with a speed sensor, it will often show with an ABS warning light or a check engine light on the dashboard.

4. Electrical Issues

cruise control buttons

The cruise control system is electronic, with many components working together to make the system operate. If the cruise control fails to work, you want to check the wiring harness and associated connectors for a fault.

You also need to ensure that the voltage source is supplying enough power to the system. Even the smallest fault can cause defects with the cruise control. In many cases, there can be an issue with the cruise control lever or buttons causing the cruise control to not engage.

If your cruise control buttons are located on the steering wheel it could also be caused by a bad clock spring, which is located behind the steering wheel.

Check the system with an OBD2 scanner to look for any trouble codes related to the cruise control.

5. Damaged Vacuum Actuator, Hoses or Cable (Older cruise control)

If you drive an older vehicle with cruise control, you might have an issue with the vacuum actuator or the cable that connects to the throttle. If there has been damage done to the vacuum hoses or the actuator, the cruise control will stop working altogether.

Additionally, the cable linking the actuator to the throttle must be in good shape. If it has been broken, the cruise control will fail.

What is Cruise Control?

Cruise control is a feature that is used when you are traveling at a consistent speed. Cruise control was first introduced for automobiles in the 1950s. However, it took many years before it became a staple in the modern vehicle.

This electrical system allows you to set a predetermined speed and take your foot off of the gas pedal. If you are on a long drive, there is less fatigue because you don’t have to try to maintain your speed. Cruise control can also benefit fuel economy because the vehicle uses less fuel when traveling steadily.

In newer cars, you might be able to find adaptive cruise control , which is a smart technology. Adaptive cruise control allows you to travel at a predetermined speed, but it also helps to maintain a safe distance from the vehicles in front of you with the help of sensors. With conventional cruise control, you need to take over when the car in front of you slows down, but that’s not the case with adaptive cruise control.

There are also vehicles nowadays with not only cruise control, but fully self-driving vehicles . We will most likely see much more of this in the future.

Cruise Control Repair Cost

The cost to repair your cruise control system depends on what caused it to fail. If you need to replace a cruise control or brake switch, you might spend between $125 and $350, including parts and labor. However, the cost to change a fuse is only a few dollars and you can perform the replacement yourself in just a matter of seconds.

On the other hand, when something major fails, such as the actuator, you could be looking at a much higher repair bill. In some vehicles, the cost to replace a cruise control actuator can cost more than $700. These costs rise if you drive a luxury vehicle or one that is difficult to get parts for.

It might not seem immediately important for you to fix the broken cruise control, but this defective system can affect other performance aspects. You could start to notice issues with acceleration or have trouble with the speedometer. To play it safe, it’s always best to have the cruise control repaired as soon as you notice a problem.

Is there a fuse for the cruise control?

Yes. If the cruise control is installed from the factory, you should check your car’s owner’s manual for the fuse location. If it’s an aftermarket cruise control, you’ll need to follow the wires to find the fuse.

Does the brake switch affect the cruise control system?

Yes. The brake switch affects the cruise control system. The brake switch sends a signal to the cruise control system to let it know when the brakes are being applied for the engine to know when it should stop accelerating.

Will the cruise control work if the check engine light is on?

The cruise control function will be disabled when the check engine light is on in most car models, even if the cause of the check engine light is not the cruise control itself. This is mainly due to safety reasons.

Can a vacuum leak affect cruise control?

Older vehicles use vacuum to control the throttle for the cruise control, and in this case a vacuum leak can heavily affect the cruise control. However, modern cruise controls are fully electric and in most cases will not be affected by a vacuum leak if the check engine light is not illuminated.

Although many people may think that the cruise control system is unimportant and not worth spending money to repair, the problem can be caused by a faulty part that will affect the engine’s performance or durability. Therefore, it is best not to ignore the problem if your cruise control is not working without first diagnosing the car properly.

If your cruise control still isn’t working after trying all the tips in this article, it’s probably time to take it in for a professional opinion from a mechanic. It may be a more serious problem that requires replacement parts or repairs. In the meantime, drive safe and enjoy the open road!

How Do You Use Cruise Control A Honda Civic?

By Richard Craver Updated on May 2, 2024

Your Honda Civic is equipped with a cruise control system that allows you to maintain a set speed automatically so that you do not have to worry about it.

If you want, it can be set to maintain a constant distance from a vehicle in front of it, or to maintain a constant speed from the vehicle in front of it.

On highways or long stretches of road with no stop lights or intersections, you may want to use cruise control if you are driving on a highway.

The purpose of this article is to give you a basic understanding of how to use cruise control on a Honda car.

Table of Contents

Feature of Cruise Control

If you switch on the cruise control, you will be able to maintain a set speed above 25 mph (40 km/h) without having to keep your foot on the accelerator pedal.

Ideally, it should be used on straight, open highways for cruising. We recommend that you do not use it if you are driving in a city, on winding roads, on slippery roads, in heavy rain, or when the weather is bad.

Feature of Cruise Control

Crashing can occur when cruise control is used improperly. On open highways in good weather, you should use your cruise control only.

How Do You Cruise Control A Honda Civic?

On the steering wheel , press the Cruise Control Master Button. There is a light on the instrument panel that indicates CRUISE MAIN.

The desired cruising speed should be above 25 miles per hour (40 kilometers per hour).

The steering wheel has a DECEL/SET button. Press it and release it.

The CRUISE CONTROL light on the instrument panel illuminates to indicate that the system has been activated.

Using The Cruise Control

You may not be able to maintain the set speed while going up and down hills with the cruise control. Use the brakes to slow down if your speed increases going down a hill.

The cruise control will be canceled. By pressing the RES/ACCEL button, you can resume your set speed. On the instrument panel, you will see the CRUISE CONTROL light come back on.

Changing The Set Speed

The following methods can be used to increase the set cruising speed:

Hold down the RES/ACCEL button. You can release the button once you reach cruising speed.

Press the accelerator pedal. Press the DECEL/SET button once you’ve reached your desired cruising speed.

The RES/ACCEL button can be tapped to increase speed in small increments. By doing so, you will increase your vehicle’s speed by about 1 mph (1.6 km/h).

If you want to decrease your set cruising speed, you can do the following:

Hold down the DECEL/SET button. Once the desired speed is reached, release the button.

Changing The Set Speed

Repeatedly tapping the DECEL/SET button will slow down your car in very small amounts. If you do this repeatedly, your vehicle will slow by about one mile per hour (1.6 km/h).

You can lightly tap the clutch or brake pedal with your foot. In the instrument panel, you will see a CRUISE CONTROL light going out.

The DECEL/SET button should be pressed when the car slows to the desired speed.

The accelerator pedal can still be used to speed up even with cruise control on. When you have completed the pass, let go of the accelerator pedal.

As soon as the vehicle reaches the set cruising speed, it will return to it. The cruise control will be disabled if your foot is resting on the brake or clutch pedal.

Canceling The System

The system can be canceled in three ways. The steering wheel has a cancel button and a main button. If you want to cancel everything, you can simply press the brake.

Pressing the distance button for at least one second can also set the vehicle to traditional cruise control.

The distance bars will disappear from the dashboard once this is done, and “cruise mode” will replace them. By pressing the distance button again for at least one second, the ACC can be re-activated.

How Do You Reset Adaptive Cruise Control?

Honda’s ACC system can be reset by pressing and holding the interval button (the four bars behind the interval button) for approximately one second, followed by Cruise Mode Selected appearing in the instrument panel.

Reset the Adaptive Cruise Control by pressing and holding the interval button once more.

How Do You Reset Adaptive Cruise Control

How Do You Drive A Cruise Control On A Honda Civic 2019?

It is convenient to have adaptive cruise control (ACC) when traveling, especially on long road trips. The following instructions will show you how to use cruise control on a Honda Civic from 2019:

On the steering wheel, press the Main button. The multi-information display on your dashboard will display the adaptive cruise control (ACC).

Use the Set/- button on the steering wheel to set the speed when you reach the desired speed. The Reset/+ and Set/- buttons are used to adjust the speed. The speed can be increased by five mph by holding down either button.

On the steering wheel, press the distance button to set the interval distance between you and the car in front of you.

There are four distance bars on the icon of a vehicle. A short interval is the shortest, followed by a middle interval, long interval, and an extra-long interval.

How Do You Drive A Cruise Control On A Honda Civic 2019

Three options are available for canceling the ACC function: pressing the Cancel button on the steering wheel, pressing the Main button on the steering wheel, or depressing the brake pedal.

While you can set your vehicle’s speed to match the speed of the car in front of you, you are still responsible for maintaining awareness and exercising driver control.

What Is The Difference Between Cruise Control And ACC?

When it comes to cruise control, what’s the difference between traditional cruise control and Honda’s Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)?

Taking cruise control to the next level and keeping roadways safer, this driver-assistive technology is part of Honda Sensing®.

It doesn’t matter whether you travel for work or enjoy family road trips, you will find driving easier and less tiring with ACC.

What Is The Difference Between Cruise Control And ACC

In addition to maintaining a constant speed, Honda’s Adaptive Cruise Control system also allows you to set the following intervals for vehicles in front of you.

How Does Honda’s ACC System Work?

To measure the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front, Honda’s ACC uses a radar unit mounted at the front of the vehicle and a camera mounted on the windshield.

In order to maintain your desired following interval between you and the vehicle ahead, the system will adjust the throttle position and even apply to brake.

How Does Honda’s ACC System Work

Final Words

It’s important to know that your cruise control might not stay consistent when you go uphill or downhill.

Therefore, you should remain attentive at all times, since the set speed won’t adjust to your situation. You can automatically turn off the cruise control by pressing the gas pedal or braking pedal.

yea ok, that would probably be a good idea for aftermarket. I really dont like the honda or acura steering wheels because they are too big, i love the race feel of a small steering wheel but to be honest i cant stand not having cruise control, my commute usually consists of a minimum of 60 miles each way so i get tired of sitting my damn leg in the same spot... any suggestions of aftermarket brands that i should consider?

2025 Honda Civic Review

1990 civic cruise control

  • Sharp handling makes for fun driving
  • Available hybrid powertrain for high mpg
  • Roomy seating and cargo area
  • Easy-to-use tech features
  • Intrusive road noise on the highway
  • Front seat lacks lumbar support
  • More expensive than its main rivals

What's new

  • Hybrid powertrain joins lineup
  • Updated grille and front-end styling
  • Google-based infotainment in top trim
  • Part of the 11th Civic generation introduced for 2022

The current-generation Honda Civic ranks as one of the automaker's best, with an expert combination of practicality, performance and value. Today's 2025 Honda Civic offers almost everything you could want in a compact sedan or hatchback. There's plenty of interior room and cargo space, a generous complement of in-car tech and driver assist features, and a range of power and performance options. There's also a big change for the 2025 Civic worth knowing about: a new hybrid version.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2025 Honda Civic Type R 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6M) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.17 per gallon for premium unleaded in North Dakota.

Edmunds spotlight: what to know about the new civic hybrid.

For 2025, the Civic gets a new hybrid powertrain. It matches the Si's horsepower (200 hp) but makes 20% more low-end torque. Sure, the Si comes with more performance hardware — sport suspension, larger brakes, manual transmission — but we imagine the hybrid will likely be able to match it in a straight line. On top of that the hybrid gets an estimated 49 mpg in combined driving. The only downside is that Honda has discontinued the previously available (and desirable) 180-hp turbocharged engine as part of the hybrid introduction. Other changes for 2025 include mild styling revisions and a new infotainment system that integrates some Google-based services, including a voice assistant that can adjust various car settings.

Competitors to consider

The 2025 Honda Civic sets a benchmark for the compact class, but it's worth checking out the alternatives. The Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla both offer good value, along with high-performance versions that rival the Si and Type R. The Mazda 3 punches above its weight with refined interior and crisp handling, while the Kia Forte is an all-around good pick that's easy on the wallet. Be sure to read our Expert Rating below for a deeper dive into the Civic's performance, comfort and more.

What’s it like to live with?

Our test team lived with a Civic Si for a year to learn more about how this sporty Civic works out in daily driving. While it was a test of a 2022 model, many of our observations are still applicable to the Civic as a whole. Read our Civic Si long-term test for more .

Edmunds Expert Rating

Performance, fuel economy, which civic does edmunds recommend.

The Sport trim will satisfy most shoppers. But we think it's worth the stretch to the new Sport Hybrid . Not only does it add a few more desirable features, such as a sunroof and heated seats, it comes with the punchy hybrid engine that makes 200 horsepower and gets close to 50 mpg. You might flinch at its price — and we wouldn't blame you — but we think it's ultimately the best value in the Civic lineup.

Honda Civic models

LX This base trim comes with:

2025 Honda Civic First Impressions

1990 civic cruise control

With hybrid powertrain demand on the rise, Honda is seizing the opportunity to give customers what they want with the new 2025 Civic hybrid. Two new hybrid-powered trim levels join the Civic lineup to bring Prius-rivaling fuel economy; the top-tier model offers a fresh take on technology with the Google built-in app suite.

We expect the new Civic to keep its affordable starting price of around $25,000 for the entry-level LX model. The Civic Sport slots in above that, followed by two new hybrid variants. Honda says the Civic Sport Hybrid will start “under $30,000,” with the top-trim Sport Touring Hybrid costing a bit more.

What’s under the Civic hybrid's hood?

For 2025, the base Civic LX and Civic Sport will keep their current engine. That’s a 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers are unchanged for the new model.

Further up the trim ladder, the EX and Touring levels are gone, and so is the upgrade 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that powered them. In their place are the new Civic Sport Hybrid and Civic Touring Hybrid. They use the same powertrain found in the Accord and CR-V hybrids — a 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with two electric motors — though it's slightly detuned here, for a total output of 200 hp and 232 lb-ft. We expect the new hybrid models to accelerate quicker than the outgoing Si, which is down 40 lb-ft. Aside from the additional thrust, the Civic hybrid will get an EPA estimate of 50 mpg in combined city/highway driving, according to Honda.

Another shake-up for the new model is Honda doing away with the manual transmission in the Civic Hatchback. The Civic is now CVT-only across the board, and if you’re a fan of three pedals, the Si and the Type R are now the only models to offer a manual transmission.

What's the Civic hybrid like to drive?

In the Civic, Honda's hybrid system is smooth and torquey off the line. Honda's Linear Shift Control system mimics traditional gear changes instead of letting the engine rage against its rev limiter when you demand full power. There's more than enough pep when you need it and excellent fuel economy when you tone things back down.

Though you might associate hybrids with dynamic boredom, that's not the case here. The Civic is eager to turn in and neatly pivots into tight bends. Hybridization has in no way dulled the sharpness that we've come to know and love in the Civic. The new car is also quieter than before, especially at highway speeds, making it a more relaxing cruiser.

How’s the Civic's interior?

Honda didn’t make any major changes to the updated Civic’s interior but we’re OK with that — this was already a great cabin for a vehicle at this price point. Our current rating gives the car high marks for its attractive design and easy-to-use controls. Small tweaks for 2025 include two USB-C ports in the front and a new gray interior color option on hybrid models.

The Civic is surprisingly roomy inside, given its compact size. Taller passengers fit in the front row without issues, and the back seats can take on average-size adults. This is also a great car for overall visibility. Thin front pillars and a low-slung dash make it easy to see forward — there are also virtually no significant blind spots.

How’s the Civic's tech?

The big news here is with the top-trim Civic Sport Touring Hybrid. Honda is finally adding the excellent Google built-in software to the Civic, but only on the one model. This brings Google Maps, the Google-powered voice assistant and the ability to add third-party apps such as Spotify. The Sport Touring also gets the upgraded 9-inch touchscreen and a 12-speaker Bose audio system.

Like we’ve said with the Accord, it would be nice to see the Google technology across more trim levels since it’s such a positive addition to the car’s tech experience. Honda still includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard on the Civic, along with a smaller 7-inch touchscreen. But if you prefer the best tech that Honda has to offer, then only the Sport Touring will get the job done.

Honda is more democratic with the Civic’s safety kit, which includes a healthy number of standard features. Adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane keeping assistance come standard on the car, while blind-spot warning and parking sensors are optional extras.

A little more fine-tuning of its driver assistance systems means adaptive cruise control follows the car ahead of you more consistently and is able to find the center of the lane and hold you there. There's no ping-ponging between lane lines at all — even with torrential rain and truly abysmal visibility on my drive route outside of Montreal. The Civic's safety systems were always some of the best, but just like the rest of the car, they have only gotten better for 2025.

The Toyota Corolla has long been the obvious competitor to the Honda Civic, and it also offers regular gas and hybrid powertrain options. This is also true of the Hyundai Elantra, which packs the best fuel economy of the three. Buyers should also consider the Toyota Prius and Kia Niro for hybrid-powered hatchback alternatives.

Edmunds says

Adding a hybrid model to the Civic range was a no-brainer for Honda, considering how popular they are at the moment. Given how much we enjoy this powertrain in the Accord and CR-V hybrids, we have high expectations for the new Civic to shine bright.

The Honda Civic continues to demonstrate its prowess in the small-sedan segment. In fact, it currently ranks No. 1 in Edmunds' rankings . The 2025 Honda Civic will most likely arrive with some refinements but nothing drastic. There's plenty to like about the current-generation Civic. Available in sedan or hatchback form, it has all the appreciated interior highlights like a roomy cabin, the latest technology and driver assist features, and comfortable seats. In addition, the powertrains available are excellent, from the one in the base LX trim to the one gracing the wicked Type R. A significant addition to the popular nameplate is the return of a hybrid-powered Civic for 2025.

Edmunds spotlight: A hybrid Civic is confirmed for 2025

The Civic Hybrid was a fixture of the lineup from the early 2000s until Honda discontinued it nearly a decade ago. Now Honda has confirmed a hybrid-powered Civic will return for 2025 in sedan and hatchback forms, though details are slim. However, we expect it to have the same powertrain as the European Civic e:HEV with 180 hp. Fuel economy for combined city/highway driving should be about 50 mpg, which would be competitive with the rival Toyota Corolla Hybrid and Toyota Prius along with the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid. Check back with Edmunds for updates as we find out more.

If you're looking for something similar to the Honda Civic in other brands, then it's worth checking out Edmunds' other well-rated choices for a small sedan, including the Kia Forte, Hyundai Elantra and Mazda 3.

History of Veliky Novgorod

Foundation of novgorod and the novgorod republic.

The official founding year of Novgorod is 859, when it was first mentioned in the chronicle. In 862, the so-called “vocation of the Varangians” led by Rurik took place on Novgorod land, which was the beginning of the formation of the Old Russian state. In 882, after the death of Rurik, Prince Oleg became the ruler of Novgorod. He captured Kiev and moved the capital of the state to it. It was the beginning of the Kievan Rus state.

Novgorod was the second town of the Kievan Rus by cultural, economic, and political influence. In 1045-1050, the Cathedral of St. Sophia was built - the main Orthodox church of Novgorod and one of the oldest preserved stone churches in Russia.

The convenient location of Novgorod at the intersection of trade routes “from the Varangians to the Greeks” made it the largest center of intra-Russian and international trade. Constant contacts of the town with the island of Gotland, German towns and the Hansa led to the opening of the first foreign missions on the territory of Novgorod.

The first attempts of Novgorod to gain independence from the Kievan Rus were taken in the 11th century. Novgorod boyars, with the support of the local population, wanted to get rid of the burden of Kiev taxation and to create their own army. In 1136, due to the retreat of Prince Vsevolod Mstislavovitch from the battlefield at Zhdanaya mountain, he was exiled from Novgorod, and a republican government was established in the region.

From 1136 to 1478, Novgorod was the capital of the Russian medieval state known as the Novgorod Republic. In the 12th century, the Novgorod land included part of the Baltic, part of Karelia, the southern part of Finland, the southern coast of Lake Ladoga, the banks of the Northern Dvina River, and vast areas of the European north up to the Urals.

More Historical Facts…

During the Mongol invasion of Rus, Novgorod avoided destruction due to its remote location. It was the only old Russian town that avoided decline in the 11th-12th centuries. In 1259, with the support of Prince Alexander Nevsky, the Mongols conducted a census in Novgorod to collect tribute. In 1280, in Novgorod, a document was drawn up known as “Russian Truth” - the very first set of laws in Russia. Until the 15th century, Novgorod’s possessions expanded to the east and northeast.

Areas northeast of Novgorod were rich in fur-bearing animals and salt. These resources were of great importance for the economy of the Novgorod Republic, which was based on trade. The town was part of the trade route from Scandinavia to Byzantium. The Russian folk hero Sadko was a merchant from Novgorod.

The Novgorod Republic was characterized by some features of the social system and feudal relations: a significant social and landowning weight of the Novgorod boyars and their active participation in trade and other activities. The main economic factor was not land, but capital. This led to a special social structure of society and an unusual form of government for medieval Rus.

The veche - a gathering of a part of the male population of the town - had broad powers. It invited, judged and expelled Novgorod princes; elected the mayor and the military leader; resolved issues of war and peace; passed and repealed laws; set the size of taxes and duties; elected representatives of the authorities in the Novgorod lands and tried them.

From the 14th century, the Tver and Moscow principalities, and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania attempted to subdue the Novgorod Republic. In 1470, Novgorod people asked the Metropolitan of Kiev to appoint a bishop for them (Kiev belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania at that time). After it, Ivan III, the Grand Prince of Moscow, accused them of treason. In 1471, he announced a military campaign against Novgorod. Moscow troops defeated Novgorod militia during the battle on the Shelon River and took the town.

In 1478, after a series of wars against Moscow, Novgorod lost its independence and the Novgorod Republic ceased to exist. The veche was abolished, the veche bell was taken to Moscow; power in the town was granted to the governors appointed by the Grand Prince of Moscow. A lot of boyar families were expelled from Novgorod.

Novgorod in the 16th-19th centuries

The oprichnina pogrom perpetrated in the winter of 1569/1570 by the army personally headed by Ivan the Terrible inflicted enormous damage on Novgorod. The reason for the pogrom was a denunciation and suspicion of treason. The town was plundered, the property of churches, monasteries and merchants was confiscated, thousands of residents were killed. In 1571, the population of Novgorod was about 5,000 people.

From 1611 to 1617, during the Time of Troubles, Novgorod was occupied by the Swedes. After the occupation, half of the town was burnt down. The population decreased to only about 500 residents. Nikon (the most famous Russian Patriarch) was the metropolitan of Novgorod in 1648-1652.

In 1700, the Great Northern War began. After the defeat at Narva, Peter I hastily prepared the fortifications of Novgorod for a possible siege of the Swedes. Swedish troops did not reach Novgorod; nevertheless, the Novgorod regiment played an important role in the Battle of Poltava in 1709.

In 1703, in connection with the founding of St. Petersburg, the new capital of Russia, a lot of craftsmen from Novgorod were involved in its construction. At the same time, Novgorod finally lost its former importance as a trade center and turned into an ordinary provincial town. In 1727, a separate Novgorod Governorate was formed with its center in Novgorod.

In the first half of the 19th century, Novgorod became the center of military settlements. At the same time, there was almost no industrial production in the town. In 1841-1842, the writer Alexander Herzen was in exile in Novgorod.

One of the brightest pages in the history of Veliky Novgorod in the 19th century was the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the Russian state in 1862. In honor of this event, a monument to the Millennium of Russia was erected in the center of the Novgorod Kremlin. In 1875, 17,384 people lived in Novgorod, along with military units. 12 small enterprises employed only 63 workers.

Novgorod in the 20th century

Despite the increased interest in its history, Novgorod both at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century remained a typical provincial town of the Russian Empire, despite its status as a regional capital. In 1914, the population of Novgorod was about 28,200 people.

In 1927, as a result of the administrative-territorial reform carried out in the USSR, the Novgorod Governorate became part of Leningrad Oblast. The Leningrad leadership viewed the Novgorod land as a rural region. No industrialization was planned.

From August 15, 1941 to January 20, 1944, during the Second World War, Novgorod was occupied by German and Spanish troops (“The Blue Division”). The war caused huge and in many ways irreparable damage to the monuments of the city itself and its environs. All wooden buildings burned down. The most valuable collections of archeology, history and art were plundered from the Novgorod museum, which was not completely evacuated in time. Almost the entire city infrastructure and industrial enterprises were destroyed, world famous monuments of Novgorod architecture were turned into ruins.

On July 5, 1944, Novgorod Oblast was formed. The transformation of Novgorod into the administrative and economic center of a separate region had a beneficial effect on the acceleration of its restoration. On November 1, 1945, Novgorod was included in the list of 15 Soviet cities subject to priority restoration. In addition, a special decree was issued on the restoration of architectural monuments. One of the first to be restored was the Millennium of Russia monument.

In the post-war years, the presence of large undeveloped areas and wastelands after the dismantling of the rubble of destroyed buildings in the city center made it possible to begin extensive archaeological research. The results of these studies were numerous finds of objects of old Russian art and everyday life. One of the most important finds was the discovery of the first birch bark letter on July 26, 1951. Archaeological research continues to this day.

In the 1950s-1970s, the main restoration work of architectural monuments was carried out. Novgorod became known as the center of all-Union and international tourism. In 1964, not far from the old Yuryev Monastery on the shore of Lake Myachino, the creation of the Vitoslavlitsy Museum of Folk Wooden Architecture began. In 1967, the population of the city was about 107,000 people.

In 1992, 37 unique monuments of old Russian culture in Novgorod were included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. The population of the city reached its maximum and amounted to 235 thousand people.

On June 11, 1999, the President of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin signed the federal law “On renaming the city of Novgorod, the administrative center of Novgorod Oblast, into the city of Veliky Novgorod.” Also in the 1990s, a lot of streets in the city center received their historical names back.

Veliky Novgorod - Features

Veliky Novgorod is deservedly called “the father of Russian cities”. In this place the Russian statehood was born. The city stands on the banks of the Volkhov River, 6 km from Lake Ilmen, 575 km north-west of Moscow and 190 km south-east of St. Petersburg. Due to similar names, Veliky Novgorod is often confused with Nizhny Novgorod. And this applies not only to foreigners, but also to residents of Russia.

The Volkhov River divides the city into two parts: Sofia and Torgovaya (Trade) sides. The Sofia side got its name from the Sofia Cathedral, which is about one thousand years old. The main part of the city is located here, including the Novgorod Kremlin and the historic center, as well as new districts.

In the old days, there was a large market on the Trade side - Torg. Today, it is built up mainly with private houses. The Yaroslav’s Courtyard is also located here. It is a historical and architectural complex on the site where the residence of Yaroslav the Wise (Prince of Novgorod in 988-1015) used to be.

The climate of Veliky Novgorod is moderately continental, with cold snowy winters and moderately warm summers. The average temperature in January is minus 9.2 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 17.3 degrees Celsius.

Novgorod Oblast has a unique transport and geographical position. The main highway, rail, air, and water transport routes connecting St. Petersburg and Moscow pass through its territory. Public transport in the city is represented by buses, trolleybuses.

The region’s largest employer is the chemical fertilizer plant “Acron”, which produces ammonia, saltpeter, nitric acid, and other substances. This enterprise is one of the world’s largest fertilizer producers. The plant in Veliky Novgorod employs about 5 thousand people.

Tourism is gradually becoming more and more important in the city’s economy. Veliky Novgorod is rightly called the city-museum of Old Rus. No other city in Russia has so many remarkable architectural monuments and monumental paintings of the 11th-17th centuries. The architecture of Veliky Novgorod is unique because a lot of old churches have survived here. A significant part of them were erected in the period from the 11th to the 16th centuries. In some churches, old wall paintings have been preserved, which are of great cultural value.

The main discovery made on the territory of Veliky Novgorod is more than 1,000 preserved birch bark letters of various contents written in the 11th-15th centuries. These include business letters, love letters, recipe notes, Bible commentaries, commercial calculations, and even student scribbles.

Main Attractions of Veliky Novgorod

Novgorod Detinets (Kremlin) - the fortress of Veliky Novgorod located on the left bank of the Volkhov River, the oldest preserved kremlin in Russia and the most northern one. The first mention of it in chronicles dates back to 1044. It is an architectural monument of federal significance. Novgorod Detinets as part of the historic center of Veliky Novgorod is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The construction of the stone fortress was completed by the end of the 15th century. About 1.5 kilometers of fortress walls, nine towers, and old churches have survived to this day. A road going through the Novgorod Kremlin leads to the bridge connecting the Sofia and Torgovaya sides of the city. The 41-meter watchtower known as “Kokuy” offers a great view of the entire city and its surroundings.

Today, it is the cultural and tourist center of Veliky Novgorod. Here you can find the main expositions of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve (the exposition of the Old Russian arts and crafts and jewelry in the Chamber of Facets; “History of the Novgorod Region”, “Old Russian icon painting”, “Russian art of the 18th-20th centuries”), restoration workshops, a library, philharmonic society, college of arts, and a music school. The Novgorod Kremlin is surrounded by a spacious park. A walk from the railway station to the Novgorod Kremlin takes about 20 minutes.

Saint Sophia Cathedral (1045-1050) - the main Orthodox church in Veliky Novgorod located on the territory of the Novgorod Kremlin, one of the oldest churches in Russia. Churches of this type were built in Rus only in the 11th century. Sophia Cathedral was built in the Byzantine style, has a pyramidal structure and 6 domes. This is one of the symbols of Veliky Novgorod.

The belfry of St. Sophia Cathedral rises above the Novgorod Kremlin in the form of a wall with five spans in the upper part. This type of structure was invented during the reign of the Novgorod Archbishop Euthymius II and then repeated in Russia only twice.

Monument to the Millennium of Russia (1862) - a magnificent monument more than 15 meters high erected opposite the St. Sophia Cathedral in honor of the millennium anniversary of the legendary vocation of the Varangians to Rus. The monument consists of 128 figures. At the very top you can see an angel - the personification of Orthodoxy and a woman depicting Rus, below - princes, church hierarchs and enlighteners, who took part in important historical events that happened over the thousand-year history of Russia.

Yaroslav’s Courtyard and Torg - an architectural complex located opposite the Novgorod Kremlin, on the other bank of the Volkhov River. Both banks are connected by a pedestrian bridge. Several monuments of the 12th-16th centuries have survived on its territory, including the Nikolsky Cathedral (1113) and the Church of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa (the 13th century). The place was named after Prince Yaroslav the Wise. In old times, fairs were held here. The most recent construction is the arcade of the Gostiny Dvor, which consists of several dozen white-stone arches.

St. George’s (Yuriev) Monastery . Founded in 1030, it is one of the oldest monasteries in Russia, a cultural heritage site of federal significance. The monastery is located on the southern outskirts of Veliky Novgorod on the bank of the Volkhov River. On the territory of the monastery there are St. George, Spassky, and Holy Cross Cathedrals, a four-tiered bell tower 52 m high, and several old churches. Crowned with three silvery domes, St. George’s Cathedral is a wonderful example of Old Russian architecture. The Vitoslavlitsy Museum is located nearby. Yur’yevskoye Highway, 10.

Museum of Folk Wooden Architecture “Vitoslavlitsy” . This open-air exhibition was opened in 1964. 22 wooden architectural monuments of the 16th-20th centuries - churches, residential buildings, and outbuildings - were brought here from different districts of the Novgorod region.

Inside the peasant huts, you can see recreated old interiors: “Winter Life”, “Wedding”, “Wool Felting Craft”, and others. Folk festivals are also held on the territory of the museum. On the second floor of the souvenir shop there is the Museum of Irons with a unique collection of irons of the 18th-20th centuries. Yur’yevskoye Highway, 14.

Center for Musical Antiquities named after V.I. Povetkin . The unique collection of this museum acquaints visitors with the old musical instruments of Rus. Here you can also hear old Russian music. Most of the exhibits date back to the 10th-15th centuries. For the guests of the center, folk songs of the Russian North-West and North are performed. Choir concerts are held on holidays. Il’ina Street, 9b.

Art Museum . The permanent exhibition of this museum is dedicated to Russian art of the 17th-20th centuries. It was opened in the historic building of the Noble Assembly in 2001. The rich collection of the museum includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, miniatures, etc.

Among the most valuable exhibits are paintings created by such masters as K. Bryullov, I. Repin, A. Aivazovsky and sculptures, including M. Antokolsky and M. Vrubel. The museum’s collection of Russian art objects is considered one of the best outside Moscow and St. Petersburg. Sofiyskaya Square, 2.

Museum of Artistic Culture of the Novgorod Land . This museum was opened in one of the buildings of the Desyatinnyy monastery in 2002. The exposition is composed of works by Novgorod artists of the late 20th - early 21st centuries. In addition to paintings, visitors can look at porcelain and glass products made by local craftsmen. Desyatinnyy Lane, 6.

The questions of our visitors

There are several ways of going from the airport of St. Petersburg to Veliky Novgorod.

The fastest one and of course the most expensive is to go by taxi from the airport straight to the destination city. The price is about 4,500-5,000 Rubles (about 70-80 USD).

Another way is to go by train. From the airport you should go to Vitebsky railway station, departure: 7:53, arrival: 13:06 local time. Also you can go to Moskovsky railway station. There are two trains: the first one departs at 8:12 and the second one - at 17:18). Not sure about the price of the tickets but much cheaper than going by taxi.

The third variant is to go by bus. You should go to the bus station at Obvodnoy Canal Embankment. The first bus departs at 7:30; the latest - at 21:30.
